Extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) sources including high-harmonic generation (HHG), free-electron lasers (FELs), soft-X-ray lasers and laser-driven plasmas are widely used for applications ranging from femtochemistry and attosecond science to coherent diffractive imaging and EUV (or XUV) lithography. The bandwidth of the XUV light emitted by these sources reflects the XUV generation process used. Whereas light from soft-X-ray lasers1 and seeded XUV FELs2 typically has a relatively narrow bandwidth, plasma sources and HHG sources often emit broadband XUV pulses3. Since these characteristic properties of a given source impose limitations on applications, techniques enabling modification of the bandwidth are highly desirable. Here we introduce a concept for efficient spectral compression by four-wave mixing (FWM), exploiting a phase-matching scheme based on closely-spaced resonances. We demonstrate the compression of broadband radiation in the 145–130 nm wavelength range into a narrow-bandwidth XUV pulse at 100.3 nm wavelength in the presence of a broadband near-infrared (NIR) pulse in a krypton gas jet. Our concept provides new possibilities for tailoring the spectral bandwidth of XUV beams. Through a dense krypton gas jet in the presence of a broadband near-infrared pulse, spectral compression of broadband XUV radiation between 145 and 130 nm wavelengths into a narrow-bandwidth XUV pulse at 100.3 nm wavelength by four-wave mixing is demonstrated.

Kerr-type nonlinearities form the basis for our physical understanding of nonlinear optical phenomena in condensed matter, such as self-focusing, solitary waves, and wave mixing. In strong fields, they are complemented by higher-order nonlinearities that enable high harmonic generation, which is currently understood as the interplay of light-driven intraband charge dynamics and interband recombination. Remarkably, the nonlinear response emerging from the associated sub-cycle injection dynamics of electrons into the conduction band has been almost completely overlooked in solids and only partially considered in the gas phase. Here we reveal this strong-field-induced nonlinearity in amorphous wide-bandgap dielectrics by means of time-resolved, low-order wave mixing experiments and show that close to the material damage threshold the so far unexplored injection current provides the leading contribution. The sensitivity of the harmonic emission to the sub-cycle ionization dynamics offers an original approach to characterize the evolution of laser-induced plasma formation in optical microprocessing., 14 pages, 4 figures

The generation of coherent light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region with attosecond pulse durations constitutes the foundation of the field of attosecond science [1]. Twenty years after the first demonstration of isolated attosecond pulses [2], they continue to be a unique tool enabling the observation and control of electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids [3, 4]. It has long been identified that an increase in the repetition rate of attosecond light sources is necessary for many applications in atomic and molecular physics [5, 6], surface science [7], and imaging [8]. Although high harmonic generation (HHG) at repetition rates exceeding 100 kHz, showing a continuum in the cut-off region of the XUV spectrum was already demonstrated in 2013 [9], the number of photons per pulse was insufficient to perform pulse characterisation via attosecond streaking [10], let alone to perform a pump-probe experiment. Here we report on the generation and full characterisation of XUV attosecond pulses via HHG driven by near-single-cycle pulses at a repetition rate of 100 kHz. The high number of 106 XUV photons per pulse on target enables attosecond electron streaking experiments through which the XUV pulses are determined to consist of a dominant single attosecond pulse. These results open the door for attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy studies at a repetition rate one or two orders of magnitude above current implementations.

A high power optical parametric amplifier operating at 100 kHz repetition rate has been integrated into an attosecond pump-probe beamline. Attosecond pulses with high photon flux are generated and characterized in pump-probe experiments.

The electric field of attosecond laser pulses can be retrieved from laser-dressed photoionisation measurements, where electron wavepackets that result from single-photon ionisation by the attosecond pulse in the presence of a dressing field are produced. In case of fluctuating dressing laser and/or attosecond pulses, e.g. due to pulse-to-pulse fluctuations of the carrier envelope phase of the infrared laser pulse, commonly applied retrieval algorithms result in the erroneous extraction of the pulse fields. We present a mixed state time-domain ptychography algorithm for the retrieval of pulse ensembles from attosecond streaking experiments.

A high power, high repetition rate optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) system is presented. The OPCPA delivers Carrier-Envelope Phase (CEP)-stable 7 fs pulses, with up to 0.19mJ of energy, with a total compressed average power of 19 W. The system is being currently integrated in an attosecond pumpprobe beamline capable of combining attosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) with synchronized few-cycle pulses in the near infrared (NIR). The main motivation for this development is to perform pump-probe experiments with attosecond time resolution, in which electrons and ions produced during photo-ionization are detected in coincidence utilizing a reaction microscope.

In laser–matter interaction experiments, it is of paramount importance to characterize the laser pulse on target (in situ) and at full power. This allows pulse optimization and meaningful comparison with theory, and it can shed fundamental new light on pulse distortions occurring in or on the target. Here we introduce and demonstrate a new technique based on dispersion-scan using the concurrent third harmonic emission from the target that permits the full (amplitude and phase), in situ, in-parallel characterization of ultrashort laser pulses in a gas or solid target over a very wide intensity range encompassing the 10 13 – 10 15 W c m − 2 regime of high harmonic generation and other important strong-field phenomena, with possible extension to relativistic intensities presently inaccessible to other diagnostics.

Many experiments in attosecond science will benefit from attosecond pulses at high repetition rates with sufficient photon flux for pump-probe experiments. We use 7fs, 800nm pulses from a non-collinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (NOPCPA) laser system to generate few-pulse attosecond pulse trains (APTs) in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) at a repetition rate of 100kHz. We report an experimental study of iodomethane attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (ATAS) in the region of iodine 4d core-to-valence/Rydberg excitation. Similar to previous atomic experiments, extreme ultraviolet near-infrared (XUV-NIR) delay-dependent absorbance changes reflect a light-induced phase due to an NIR-field driven AC Stark shift of the excited states, as well as pathway interferences arising from couplings between neighboring states. As a novel aspect of molecular ATAS, we observe pronounced differences between the ATAS signatures of valence and Rydberg states. While the core-to-valence transitions carry the majority of the XUV oscillator strength, the core-to-Rydberg transitions are dominantly affected by a moderately strong, nonionizing NIR field. Our experimental findings are corroborated by ab initio calculations and ATAS simulations.

We have studied high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in an indium ablation plume driven by intense few-cycle laser pulses centered at 775 nm as a function of the frequency chirp of the laser pulse. We found experimentally that resonant emission lines between 19.7 eV and 22.3 eV (close to the 13th and 15th harmonic of the laser) exhibit a strong, asymmetric chirp dependence, with pronounced intensity modulations. The chirp dependence is reproduced by our numerical time-dependent Schrodinger equation simulations of a resonant HHG by the model indium ion. As demonstrated with our separate simulations of HHG within the strong field approximation, the resonance can be understood in terms of the chirp-dependent HHG photon energy coinciding with the energy of an autoionizing state to ground state transition with high oscillator strength. This supports the validity of the general theory of resonant four-step HHG in the few-cycle limit.

In recent years OPCPA and NOPCPA laser systems have shown the potential to supersede Ti: Sapphire plus nonlinear post-compression based laser systems to drive next generation attosecond light sources via direct amplification of few-cycle pulses to high pulse energies at high repetition rates. With the advent of these laser systems comes a need for improved pulse characterization technology. Due to the non-collinear interaction in NOPA based laser systems the amplified few-cycle pulses can suffer from spatio-temporal couplings. Most spatio-temporal pulse characterization techniques are based on separating spatial and temporal measurements in a test-plus reference-pulse scheme. Here we review two self-referencing techniques that are able to perform spatio-temporal pulse characterization of few-cycle pulses.

The development of attosecond pulses across different photon energies is an essential precursor to performing pump–probe attosecond experiments in complex systems, where the potential of attosecond science1 can be further developed2,3. We report the generation and characterization of synchronized extreme ultraviolet (90 eV) and vacuum ultraviolet (20 eV) pulses, generated simultaneously via high-harmonic generation. The vacuum ultraviolet pulses are well suited for pump–probe experiments that exploit the high photo-ionization cross-sections of many molecules in this spectral region4 as well as the higher photon flux due to the higher conversion efficiency of the high harmonic generation process at these energies5. We temporally characterized all pulses using the attosecond streaking technique6 and the FROG-CRAB retrieval method7. We report 576 ± 16 as pulses at 20 eV and 257 ± 21 as pulses at 90 eV. Our demonstration of synchronized attosecond pulses at different photon energies, which are inherently jitter-free due to the common-path geometry implemented, offers unprecedented possibilities for pump–probe studies.

We review the self-referenced spatio-temporal characterization of few-cycle laser pulses. In particular we show results obtained from high average power NOPA based laser systems using the single-shot SEA-F-SPIDER technique and spatially multiplexed time-domain ptychography.

The progress in the development of a high acquisition rate attosecond XUV-IR pump-probe beamline is discussed. A high repetition rate parametric amplifier allows driving the harmonic generation process at a repetition rate of 100 kHz.

The intrapulse coherence is introduced as a measure for judging a fixed phase relation between different spectral components within a laser pulse. This new criterion plays an important role for passive CEP stabilization of OPA systems.

Noncollinear optical parametric amplifiers (NOPAs) have become the leading technique for the amplification of carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable, few-cycle pulses at high repetition rate and high average power. In this Letter, a NOPA operating at a repetition rate of 100 kHz delivering more than 24 W of average power before compression is reported. The amplified bandwidth supports sub-7 fs pulse durations and pulse compression close to the transform limit is realized. CEP stability after amplification is demonstrated. The system paves the way to attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy with electron-ion coincidence detection.

The concept of coherence is of fundamental importance for describing the physical characteristics of light and for evaluating the suitability for experimental application. In the case of pulsed laser sources, the pulse-to-pulse coherence is usually considered for a judgment of the compressibility of the pulse train. This type of coherence is often lost during propagation through a highly nonlinear medium, and pulses prove incompressible despite multioctave spectral coverage. Notwithstanding the apparent loss of interpulse coherence, however, supercontinua enable applications in precision frequency metrology that rely on coherence between different spectral components within a laser pulse. To judge the suitability of a light source for the latter application, we define an alternative criterion, which we term intrapulse coherence. This definition plays a limiting role in the carrier-envelope phase measurement and stabilization of ultrashort pulses. It is shown by numerical simulation and further corroborated by experimental data that filamentation-based supercontinuum generation may lead to a loss of intrapulse coherence despite near-perfect compressibility of the pulse train. This loss of coherence may severely limit active and passive carrier-envelope phase stabilization schemes and applications in optical high-field physics.

A novel pulse characterization method is presented, favorably combining interferometric frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) and time-domain ptychography. This new variant is named ptychographic-interferometric frequency-resolved optical gating (πFROG). The measurement device is simple, bearing similarity to standard second-harmonic FROG, yet with a collinear beam geometry and an added bandpass filter in one of the correlator arms. The collinear beam geometry allows tight focusing and circumvents possible geometrical distortion effects of noncollinear methods, making πFROG especially suitable for the characterization of unamplified few-cycle pulses. Moreover, the direction-of-time ambiguity afflicting most second-order FROG variants is eliminated. Possible group delay dispersion of pulses leads to a characteristic tilt in the πFROG traces, allowing the detection of uncompensated dispersion without a retrieval. Using nanojoule, three-cycle pulses at 800 nm, the πFROG method is tested, and the results are compared with spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction measurements. Measured pulse durations agree within a fraction of a femtosecond. As a further test, the πFROG measurements are repeated with added group delay dispersion, and found to accurately reproduce the dispersion computed with Sellmeier equations.

Near single-cycle lasers have opened new frontiers in nonlinear optics and are essential tools for attosecond science [1]. In the last few years development in pulse characterization has been aimed both at improvements in fidelity and ease of use and also the ability to characterize ever shorter pulses down to near-single-or sub-cycle pulse durations [2, 3]. It is usually assumed that the electric field of a laser pulse can be factorized into a spatial and a temporal part E(x, y, t) = E(x, y) E(t). Most currently known and established pulse characterization techniques average over one or more spatial dimension of the beam or measure a sub-sample of the beam selected by an aperture, which can lead to errorneous measurements even in case of benign sources like hollow fiber compressors due to the inherent radially varying spectrum in the collimated beam. For most experiments space-time couplings are detrimental but for some e.g. the attosecond gating scheme by ultrafast wavefront rotation, the introduction of deliberate space-time couplings where E(x, y, t) ≠ E(x, y) E(t) is desirable [4].

Non-linear photoionization of molecules in the 10–50 eV range is a prerequisite for pump-probe measurements with sub-femtosecond resolution, but hitherto has been limited to femtosecond resolution, low repetition rate and high photon flux laser systems. We demonstrate two-photon single ionization of helium atoms using 100 pJ, 1.34 fs pulses (main peak FWHM = 680 as) at 1 kHz repetition rate with a central photon energy of 19.6 eV. We obtained an exponent of 2.27 ± 0.21 for the intensity dependence of the signal and a two-photon ionization cross-section of 5.0 ± 0.5 × 10 −50 cm4 s. Our work opens the possibility of attosecond pump-probe measurements of ultrafast molecular processes.

We demonstrate angle-resolved coherent (ARC) wave mixing using 4 fs light pulses derived from a laser source that spans 550-1000 nm. We believe this to be the shortest pulse duration used to date in coherent multi-dimensional spectroscopy. The marriage of this ultra-broad band, few-cycle coherent source with the ARC technique will permit new investigations of the interplay between energy transfers and quantum superposition states spanning 8200 cmsup-1/sup. We applied this configuration to measurements on the photosynthetic low light (LL) complex from Rhodopseudomonas palustris in solution at ambient temperature. We observe bi-exponential population dynamics for energy transfer across 5500 cmsup-1/sup(0.65 eV), which we attribute to energy transfer from the Qsubx/subtransition of bacteriochlorophylls to the B850 pigment of the complex. We believe for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate that ARC maps can be recorded using a single laser pulse.

We show the application of time-domain ptychography for the self-referenced characterization of near single-cycle laser pulses. Using spatial multiplexing spatio-temporal pulse characterization is demonstrated.

Recently two emerging areas of research, attosecond and nanoscale physics, have started to come together. Attosecond physics deals with phenomena occurring when ultrashort laser pulses, with duration on the femto- and sub-femtosecond time scales, interact with atoms, molecules or solids. The laser-induced electron dynamics occurs natively on a timescale down to a few hundred or even tens of attoseconds, which is comparable with the optical field. On the other hand, the second branch involves the manipulation and engineering of mesoscopic systems, such as solids, metals and dielectrics, with nanometric precision. Although nano-engineering is a vast and well-established research field on its own, the merger with intense laser physics is relatively recent. In this article we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical overview of physics that takes place when short and intense laser pulses interact with nanosystems, such as metallic and dielectric nanostructures. In particular we elucidate how the spatially inhomogeneous laser induced fields at a nanometer scale modify the laser-driven electron dynamics. Consequently, this has important impact on pivotal processes such as ATI and HHG. The deep understanding of the coupled dynamics between these spatially inhomogeneous fields and matter configures a promising way to new avenues of research and applications. Thanks to the maturity that attosecond physics has reached, together with the tremendous advance in material engineering and manipulation techniques, the age of atto-nano physics has begun, but it is in the initial stage. We present thus some of the open questions, challenges and prospects for experimental confirmation of theoretical predictions, as well as experiments aimed at characterizing the induced fields and the unique electron dynamics initiated by them with high temporal and spatial resolution., Invited Review ROPP, 50 pages, 38 figures

We show that multiple-shear spectral shearing interferometry can overcome the relative phase ambiguity of disjoint spectral components that is present in single-shear approaches. By upconverting the unknown pulse with spatially chirped ancillae, we achieve a shear-to-space mapping that can be acquired on an imaging spectrometer. A subset of this continuous range of shears can be chosen for robust and accurate phase retrieval using a multiple-shear algorithm.

Advances in the generation of ultrashort laser pulses, and the emergence of new research areas such as attosecond science, nanoplasmonics, coherent control, and multidimensional spectroscopy, have led to the need for a new class of ultrafast metrology that can measure the electric field of complex optical waveforms spanning the ultraviolet to the infrared. Important examples of such waveforms are those produced by spectral control of ultrabroad bandwidth pulses, or by Fourier synthesis. These are typically tailored for specific purposes, such as to increase the photon energy and flux of high-harmonic radiation, or to control dynamical processes by steering electron dynamics on subcycle time scales. These applications demand a knowledge of the full temporal evolution of the field. Conventional pulse measurement techniques that provide estimates of the relative temporal or spectral phase are unsuited to measure such waveforms. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new, all-optical method for directly measuring the electric field of arbitrary ultrafast optical waveforms. Our method is based on high-harmonic generation (HHG) driven by a field that is the collinear superposition of the waveform to be measured with a stronger probe laser pulse. As the delay between the pulses is varied, we show that the field of the unknown waveform is mapped to energy shifts in the high-harmonic spectrum, allowing a direct, accurate, and rapid retrieval of the electric field with subcycle temporal resolution at the location of the HHG.

With the emergence of high-repetition-rate few-cycle laser pulse amplifiers, aimed at investigating ultrafast dynamics in atomic, molecular and solid state science, the need for ever faster carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection and control has arisen. Here we demonstrate a high speed, continuous, every-single-shot measurement and fast feedback scheme based on a stereo above-threshold ionization time-of-flight spectrometer capable of detecting the CEP and pulse duration at a repetition rate of up to 400 kHz. This scheme is applied to a 100 kHz optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) few-cycle laser system, demonstrating improved CEP stabilization and allowing for CEP tagging.

We report on the characterization of space-time couplings in high energy sub-2-cycle 770nm laser pulses using a self-referencing single-shot method. Using spatially-encoded arrangement filter-based spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SEA-F-SPIDER) we characterize few-cycle pulses with a wave-front rotation of 2.8x?10^11 rev/sec (1.38 mrad per half-cycle) and pulses with pulse front tilts ranging from to -0.33 fs/um to -3.03 fs/um., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate a novel, single-shot ultrafast diagnostic, based on the dispersion-scan (d-scan) technique. In this implementation, rather than scanning wedges to vary the dispersion as in standard d-scan, the pulse to be measured experiences a spatially varying amount of dispersion in a Littrow prism. The resulting beam is then imaged into a second-harmonic generation crystal and an imaging spectrometer is used to measure the two-dimensional trace, which is analyzed using the d-scan retrieval algorithm. We compare the single-shot implementation with the standard d-scan for the measurement of sub-3.5-fs pulses from a hollow core fiber pulse compressor. We show that the retrieval algorithm used to extract amplitude and phase of the pulse provides comparable results, proving the validity of the new single-shot implementation down to near single-cycle durations., 6 pages, 4 figures

We present results of a compact scanning transmission microscope (CSTXM) operated with laser-produced high-order?harmonic (HH) and laser plasma (LIP) radiation. When using relatively broadband radiation of a HH source (3 harmonics) a resolution of < 1 ?m is achieved with 13 nm light. Pictures containing 100 ? 100 pixels with about 1000 photons per pixel are generated in less than 1.5 hours with a 1 kHz laser source and a dwell time of 500 ms per pixel. Using a narrow-band emission line of a laser plasma source with the CSTXM 500 nm structures of a test object were imaged at the laser plasma source with a dwell time of 250 ms.

The response of solids to electromagnetic fields is of crucial importance in many areas of science and technology. Many fundamental questions remain to be answered about the dynamics of the photoexcited electrons that underpin this response, which can evolve on timescales of tens to hundreds of attoseconds. How, for example, is the photoexcited electron affected by the periodic potential as it travels in the solid, and how do the other electrons respond in these strongly correlated systems? Furthermore, control of electronic motion in solids with attosecond precision would pave the way for the development of ultrafast optoelectronics. Attosecond electron dynamics can be traced using streaking, a technique in which a strong near-infrared laser field accelerates an attosecond electron wavepacket photoemitted by an extreme ultraviolet light pulse, imprinting timing information onto it. We present attosecond streaking measurements on the wide-bandgap semiconductor tungsten trioxide, and on gold, a metal used in many nanoplasmonic devices. Information about electronic motion in the solid is encoded on the temporal properties of the photoemitted electron wavepackets, which are consistent with a spread of electron transport times to the surface following photoexcitation. Quasifree field-driven electron trajectories are a key element of strong-field dynamics. Upon recollision with the parent ion, the energy transferred from the field to the electron may be released as attosecond-duration extreme ultaviolet emission in the process of high-harmonic generation. The conventional sinusoidal driver fields set limitations on the maximum value of this energy transfer and the efficient return of the launched electron trajectories. It has been predicted that these limits can be significantly exceeded by an appropriately ramped-up cycle shape [L. E. Chipperfield et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 063003 (2009)]. Here, we present an experimental realization of similar cycle-shaped waveforms and demonstrate control of the high-harmonic generation process on the single-atom quantum level via attosecond steering of the electron trajectories. With our improved optical cycles, we boost the field ionization launching the electron trajectories, increase the subsequent field-to-electron energy transfer, and reduce the trajectory duration. We demonstrate, in realistic experimental conditions, 2 orders of magnitude enhancement of the generated extreme ultraviolet flux together with an increased spectral extension. This application, which is only one example of what can be achieved with cycle-shaped high-field light waves, has significant implications for attosecond spectroscopy and molecular self-probing.

Over the past decade intense laser fields with a single-cycle duration and even shorter, subcycle multicolour field transients have been generated and applied to drive attosecond phenomena in strong-field physics. Because of their extensive bandwidth, single-cycle fields cannot be emitted or amplified by laser sources directly and, as a rule, are produced by external pulse compression—a combination of nonlinear optical spectral broadening followed up by dispersion compensation. Here we demonstrate a simple robust driver for high-field applications based on this Kagome fibre approach that ensures pulse self-compression down to the ultimate single-cycle limit and provides phase-controlled pulses with up to a 100 μJ energy level, depending on the filling gas, pressure and the waveguide length., Single-cycle and sub-cycle field transients are typically generated by external pulse compression where a combination of nonlinear broadening followed up by dispersion compensation is used. Here, Balciunas et al. use self-compression in a Kagome fibre to generate phase-controlled single-cycle pulses.

Enhanced single harmonic generation is analyzed in indium laser ablation plasmas at excitation conditions of multicycle (30 fs) and few-cycle (3.5 fs) pulses. We demonstrate the strong influence of pulse duration, on the emission spectra from the indium plasma. For few-cycle pulses, the enhanced emissions do not coincide with the expected harmonic wavelengths, which is the case for multicycle pulses. We test the coherent properties of an enhanced emission around 20 eV using polarization and double-slit interference techniques. We also characterize the dynamics of the emissions from the indium plasma by tuning the laser pulse duration. A theoretical analysis is presented to describe the indium plasma emission upon excitation by few-cycle pulses. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Summary form only given. High-order harmonic generation (HHG) is a well-established route to the production of coherent XUV radiation and isolated attosecond pulses. In the pursuit to enhance low XUV harmonic flux from gas targets, and to study fundamental aspects of HHG, alternative media such as molecules, microdroplets, and solids have been employed. Especially, HHG in ablation plumes has attracted attention for high flux attosecond pulse generation [1]. This contribution focuses on HHG in plasma plumes generated from transition metals. These metals exhibit giant resonances in their photoionization cross sections (e.g. the Mn+ cross section is ~40 Mb at 50eV, compared with typical rare gas atom cross sections of 1 to 8 Mb at this photon energy [2]). Resonantly enhanced HHG has been confirmed by previous experiments with laser-produced transition metal plasmas [3] and also in a recent study with xenon gas [4].

Attosecond light pulses within the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) energy range are predicted by solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation (TDSE) for a model neon atom in short laser pulses of different field polarization states. We compare high-order harmonic generation in linearly polarized laser pulses to the method of polarization gating and find attosecond pulses that approach the Fourier limit of 700 as given by an indium filter, spectrally centered at 15 eV. At such low energies, harmonic generation has low sensitivity to ellipticity, which enables the generation of elliptically polarized attosecond pulses. We also show that emission at the atomic transition energies is strongly damped by including intensity averaging.

We report on the spatially resolved full amplitude and phase characterization of mid-infrared high intensity laser pulses generated in a three stage OPA. We use a spatially-encoded arrangement (SEA-)SPIDER with spectral filters for ancilla generation for spatially resolved characterization. Using five interchangeable filter sets we are able to characterize pulses from 1 to 2{\mu}m with one single device with minimal adjustments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We report on the observation of enhanced high harmonics from a carbon plasma using sub-5-fs laser pulses. The efficiency of harmonic generation in the range of 14\char21{}25 eV was up to five times higher in the case of a plasma medium (graphite ablation) compared with gas (argon) under similar experimental conditions. The harmonic enhancement can be attributed to the presence of carbon nanoparticles in the ablation plumes.

High-order harmonic generation in graphite-ablated plasmas was systematically studied using ultrashort (3.5 and 30 fs) laser pulses. We observed the efficient frequency conversion of 3.5 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses in the range of 15-26eV. Stabilization of the harmonic yield at a 1kHz pulse repetition rate was accomplished using a rotating graphite target. We also show the results of harmonic generation in carbon plasma using 1300nm, 40ps pulses, which allowed the extension of the harmonic cutoff while maintaining a comparable conversion efficiency to the case of 780nm driving radiation. The time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis of the plasma components and the scanning electron microscopy of plasma debris under optimal conditions for harmonic generation suggest the presence of small carbon clusters (C 10-C 30) in the plasma plume at the moment of femtosecond pulse propagation, which further aggregate on nearby substrates. We present the results of plasma spectroscopy obtained under unoptimized plasma conditions that elucidate the reduction in harmonic signal. We also present calculations of plasma concentration under different excitation conditions of the ablated graphite target.

Recently the use of isolated attosecond pulses has allow unprecedented temporal resolution of charge motion in gases and condensed matter [1,2]. A surface science apparatus has been constructed to allow the ultrafast charge dynamics on rough and structured surfaces to be investigated. The system is connected to the Attosecond source at Imperial College allowing isolated attosecond bursts of XUV radiation to be used as a probe Fig.2.

We report a new version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER), which enables consistency checking through the simultaneous acquisition of multiple shears and offers a simple and precise calibration method. By mixing the test pulse with two spatially chirped ancilla fields we generate a single-shot interferogram which contains multiple shears, the spectral amplitude of the test pulse, and the reference phase, which is accurate for broadband pulses. All calibration parameters - shear, upconversion-frequency and reference phase position - can be accurately obtained from a single calibration trace., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We show that using multiple shears in spectral shearing interferometry is a powerful technique for improving precision, thus enabling the measurement of more complex pulses and resolving phase ambiguities. We derive an efficient and robust optimal phase reconstruction algorithm for extracting the spectral phase from interferograms taken at an arbitrary number of different shears. We show that if the shear is easily adjustable then a multishear measurement always offers a superior precision, even when considering the loss of precision of the raw data necessitated by multiple acquisitions. We present numerical examples and demonstrate an experimental implementation of the measurement of a double pulse using two shears.

We report a version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER), in which spectral filters are used to produce the quasi-monochromatic fields required for upconversion. The advantages of this approach include improved calibration accuracy, robustness for strongly chirped input pulses, simplicity, and compactness. We verify the technique experimentally by measuring the spectral chirp of a grating compressor using a spatially encoded arrangement (SEA-)SPIDER.

An axis-symmetrical problem of light diffraction on a nanometer-sized particle placed in arbitrary distance close to a surface is solved based on Maxwell's equations. Complex dielectric functions for the particle and the surface are taken into account. By applying the Green function method, the initial Maxwell equations are reduced to an equivalent system of integral equations. The boundary element method permits one to transform these to a linear system of equations and to solve it by the Gaussian method. In this paper metallic spheres, prolate ellipsoids, and conical bodies of arbitrary size, placed in vacuum and near a metallic surface are considered. Enhancement factors of the electric field of these bodies consisting of Na, Ag, Au, and Cu are calculated surface averaged and at the poles. Large field enhancement factors (up to several hundred times) were indeed observed for these metals. It is shown that the presence of the metallic surface results in an additional field enhancement which is strongly dependent on the apex shape of the bodies.

We demonstrate the generation of high-energy sub-2-cycle laser pulses generated through hollow core fibre pulse compression. We demonstrate their full characterization with two independent methods. For all-optical characterization in amplitude and spectral phase, we employ spatially encoded arrangement spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction using spectrally filtered ancilla beams to characterize the sub-4-fs pulses with spatial resolution. For field-sensitive pulse characterization, we generate isolated attosecond pulses around 93 eV. The attosecond pulse as well as the infrared few-cycle pulse is characterized in amplitude and phase using the frequency resolved optical gating for complete reconstruction of the attosecond bursts technique. We find good agreement between the two methods.

The characterization of the temporal profile of plasmonic fields is important both from the fundamental point of view and for potential applications in ultrafast nanoplasmonics. It has been proposed by Stockman et al (2007 Nat. Photonics 1 539) that the plasmonic electric field can be directly measured by the attosecond streaking technique; however, streaking from nanoplasmonic fields differs from streaking in the gas phase because of the field localization on the nanoscale. To understand streaking in this new regime, we have performed numerical simulations of attosecond streaking from fields localized in nanoantennas. In this paper, we present simulated streaked spectra for realistic experimental conditions and discuss the plasmonic field reconstruction from these spectra. We show that under certain circumstances when spatial averaging is included, a robust electric field reconstruction is possible.

We report on a version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) that uses no nonlinear crystals, instead relying on the harmonic signal from a gold mirror. Surface harmonic generation holds the promise of being able to upconvert extremely broad bandwidths over a large tuning range, thus providing access to both extremely short pulses and wavelengths outside of traditional methods. In this proof of principle demonstration, SPIDER traces for chirped and transform-limited 55 fs pulses are presented.

We report on Kagome fiber based self-compression of 100 μJ IR pulses to single cycle duration and demonstrate HHG in an integrated scheme which allows a compact isolated attosecond XUV source implementation above 50 eV.

We describe a complete technological system at Imperial College London for Attosecond Science studies. The system comprises a few-cycle, carrier envelope phase stabilized laser source which delivers sub 4 fs pulses to a vibration-isolated attosecond vacuum beamline. The beamline is used for the generation of isolated attosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) at kilohertz repetition rates through laser-driven high harmonic generation in gas targets. The beamline incorporates: interferometers for producing pulse sequences for pump-probe studies; the facility to spectrally and spatially filter the harmonic radiation; an in-line spatially resolving XUV spectrometer; and a photoelectron spectroscopy chamber in which attosecond streaking is used to characterize the attosecond pulses. We discuss the technology and techniques behind the development of our complete system and summarize its performance. This versatile apparatus has enabled a number of new experimental investigations which we briefly describe.
