The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) was designed and constructed by a collaboration of six U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. The SNS accelerator system consists of a 1 GeV linear accelerator and an accumulator ring providing 1.4 MW of proton beam power in microsecond-long beam pulses to a liquid mercury target for neutron production. The accelerator complex consists of a front-end negative hydrogen-ion injector system, an 87 MeV drift tube linear accelerator, a 186 MeV side-coupled linear accelerator, a 1 GeV superconducting linear accelerator, a 248-m circumference accumulator ring and associated beam transport lines. The accelerator complex is supported by ~100 high-power RF power systems, a 2 K cryogenic plant, ~400 DC and pulsed power supply systems, ~400 beam diagnostic devices and a distributed control system handling ~100,000 I/O signals. The beam dynamics design of the SNS accelerator is presented, as is the engineering design of the major accelerator subsystems.

The neutron long counter NERO was built at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), Michigan State University, for measuring β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities. The detector was designed to work in conjunction with a β -delay implantation station, so that β decays and β -delayed neutrons emitted from implanted nuclei can be measured simultaneously. The high efficiency of about 40%, for the range of energies of interest, along with the small background, are crucial for measuring β -delayed neutron emission branchings for neutron-rich r-process nuclei produced as low intensity fragmentation beams in in-flight separator facilities.

Observed neutron-capture elemental abundances in metal-poor stars, along with ongoing analysis of the extremely metal-poor Eu-enriched sub-class provide new guidance for astrophysical models aimed at finding the r-process sites. The present paper emphasizes the importance of nuclear physics parameters entering in these models, particularly β -decay properties of neutron-rich nuclei. In this context, several r-process motivated β -decay experiments performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) are presented, including a summary of results and impact on model calculations.

Recent observations of r-process-enriched metal-poor star abundances reveal a non-uniform abundance pattern for elements $Z\leq47$. Based on non-correlation trends between elemental abundances as a function of Eu-richness in a large sample of metal-poor stars, it is shown that the mixing of a consistent and robust light element primary process (LEPP) and the r-process pattern found in r-II metal-poor stars explains such apparent non-uniformity. Furthermore, we derive the abundance pattern of the LEPP from observation and show that it is consistent with a missing component in the solar abundances when using a recent s-process model. As the astrophysical site of the LEPP is not known, we explore the possibility of a neutron capture process within a site-independent approach. It is suggested that scenarios with neutron densities $n_{n}\leq10^{13}$ $cm^{-3}$ or in the range $n_{n}\geq10^{24}$ $cm^{-3}$ best explain the observations., 28 pages, 7 Postscript figures. The level structure of 30 S was studied at the NSCL by using neutron removal reactions with a radioactive 31 S beam. The γ -decay from excited states in 30 S was measured in a Ge-detector array. The results discussed for this work will reduce the uncertainties in the determination of the astrophysical 29 P(p, γ ) 30 S reaction rate under rp -process conditions.

Background: Nuclear structure plays a significant role on the rapid neutron capture process ($r$ process) since shapes evolve with the emergence of shells and subshells. There was some indication in neighboring nuclei that we might find examples of a new $N=56$ subshell, which may give rise to a doubly magic ${}_{34}^{90}$Se${}_{56}$ nucleus.Purpose: $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay half-lives of nuclei around ${}^{90}$Se have been measured to determine if this nucleus has in fact a doubly magic character.Method: The fragmentation of a ${}^{136}$Xe beam at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University was used to create a cocktail of nuclei in the $A=90$ region.Results: We have measured the half-lives of 22 nuclei near the $r$-process path in the $A=90$ region. The half-lives of ${}^{88}\phantom{\rule{-0.16em}{0ex}}$As and ${}^{90}$Se have been measured for the first time. The values were compared with theoretical predictions in the search for nuclear-deformation signatures of a $N=56$ subshell, and its possible role in the emergence of a potential doubly magic ${}^{90}$Se. The impact of such hypothesis on the synthesis of heavy nuclei, particularly in the production of Sr, Y, and Zr elements was investigated with a weak $r$-process network.Conclusions: The new half-lives agree with results obtained from a standard global QRPA model used in $r$-process calculations, indicating that ${}^{90}$Se has a quadrupole shape incompatible with a closed $N=56$ subshell in this region. The impact of the measured ${}^{90}$Se half-life in comparison with a former theoretical predication associated with a spherical half-life on the weak $r$ process is shown to be strong.

The location of electron capture heat sources in the crust of accreting neutron stars depends on the masses of extremely neutron-rich nuclei. We present first results from a new implementation of the time-of-flight technique to measure nuclear masses of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The masses of 16 neutron-rich nuclei in the scandium -- nickel range were determined simultaneously, improving the accuracy compared to previous data in 12 cases. The masses of $^{61}${V}, $^{63}${Cr}, $^{66}${Mn}, and $^{74}${Ni} were measured for the first time with mass excesses of $-30.510(890)$ MeV, $-35.280(650)$ MeV, $-36.900(790)$ MeV, and $-49.210(990)$ MeV, respectively. With the measurement of the $^{66}$Mn mass, the locations of the two dominant electron capture heat sources in the outer crust of accreting neutron stars that exhibit superbursts are now experimentally constrained. We find that the location of the $^{66}$Fe$\rightarrow^{66}$Mn electron capture transition occurs significantly closer to the surface than previously assumed because our new experimental Q-value is 2.1 MeV (2.6$\sigma$) smaller than predicted by the FRDM mass model., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Experience NSCL; International audience; We report in this study the nuclear properties of proton-rich isotopes located along the rp-process path. The experiments have recently been performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University. The level properties above the proton separation energy of the nuclei 30S, 36K and 37Ca were measured with precision of < 10 keV. This will allow a reduction in the determination of the astrophysical (p, ) reaction rate under rp-process conditions.

Measurements of $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay properties of $A\ensuremath{\lesssim}110$ r-process nuclei have been completed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay half-lives for $^{105}\mathrm{Y}$, $^{106,107}\mathrm{Zr}$, and $^{111}\mathrm{Mo}$, along with $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed neutron emission probabilities of $^{104}\mathrm{Y}$, $^{109,110}\mathrm{Mo}$ and upper limits for $^{105}\mathrm{Y}$, $^{103\ensuremath{-}107}\mathrm{Zr}$, and $^{108,111}\mathrm{Mo}$ have been measured for the first time. Studies on the basis of the quasi-random-phase approximation are used to analyze the ground-state deformation of these nuclei.

Atomic masses play a crucial role in many nuclear astrophysics calculations. The lack of experimental values for relevant exotic nuclides triggered a rapid development of new mass measurement devices around the world. The Time-of-Flight (TOF) mass measurements offer a complementary technique to the most precise one, Penning trap measurements, the latter being limited by the rate and half-lives of the ions of interest. The NSCL facility provides a well-suited infrastructure for TOF mass measurements of very exotic nuclei. Observations of metal‐poor stars in the last decade have revealed an abundance pattern that have recently been explained as the result of two nucleosynthesis processes, a strong r‐process that creates most of the Z⩾56 and some 38⩽Z⩽47 abundances and a light element primary process (LEPP) responsible for creating the remaining 38⩽Z⩽47 abundances and some small contribution to heavier elements. We review some of the current literature on the LEPP and show a derived abundance pattern as a function of mass number.

We are developing an updated library with reaction rates important for the study of the astrophysical rp‐ process. It includes both experimental and theoretical rates parametrized in terms of the standard REACLIB format. The experimental data contain various compilations updated with the most recent data. The theoretical data are taken from shell‐model calculations whenever available otherwise statistical Hauser‐Feshbach calculations were used. All theoretical rates were recalculated using the latest reaction Q‐values. All new rates include stellar enhancement factors. The data will be accessed through a convenient web interface. It is anticipated that this JINA project evolves into an evaluated public data archive for reaclib library data.

The present paper reports on several r-process motivated β-decay experiments undertaken at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. β-decay half-lives and β-delayed neutron-emission probabilities were measured for nuclei around the r-process A = 70–80 and A = 90 – 110 mass regions. The data are discussed on the basis of quasi-random phase approximation calculations. The emphasis is made on the impact of these data upon calculations of r-process abundances.

A search for Triton stellar occultation candidates for the period 1992-1994 has been completed with CCD strip-scanning observations. The search reached an R magnitude of about 17.4 and found 129 candidates within 1.5 arcsec of Triton's ephemeris during this period. Of these events, around 30 occultations are expected to be visible from the earth, indicating that a number of Triton occultation events should be visible from major observatories. Even the faintest of the present candidate events could produce useful occultation data if observed with a large enough telescope. The present astrometric accuracy is inadequate to identify which of these appulse events will produce occultations on the earth; further astrometry is needed to refine the predictions for positive occultation identification. To aid in selecting candidates for additional astrometric and photometric studies, finder charts and earth-based visibility charts for each event are included.
