The structure of nuclei provides insight into astrophysical reaction rates that are difficult to measure directly. These studies are often performed with transfer reactions and β-decay measurements. These experiments benefit from particle-γ coincidence measurements which provide information beyond that of particle detection alone. The Hybrid Array of Gamma Ray Detectors (HAGRiD) of LaBr3(Ce) scintillators has been designed with this purpose in mind. The design of the array permits it to be coupled with particle detector systems, such as the Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array (ORRUBA) of silicon detectors and the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE). It is also designed to operate with the Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) advanced target system. HAGRiD’s design avoids compromising the charged-particle angular resolution due to compact geometries which are often used to increase the γ efficiency in other systems. First experiments with HAGRiD coupled to VANDLE as well as ORRUBA and JENSA are discussed.

GODDESS is a coupling of the charged-particle detection system ORRUBA to the gamma-ray detector array Gammasphere. This coupling has been developed in order to facilitate the high-resolution measurement of direct reactions in normal and inverse kinematics with stable and radioactive beams. GODDESS has been commissioned using a beam of 134 Xe at 10 MeV/A, in a campaign of stable beam measurements. The measurement demonstrates the capabilities of GODDESS under radioactive beam conditions, and provides the first data on the single-neutron states in 135 Xe, including previously unobserved states based on the orbitals above the N=82 shell closure.

A direct test of nova explosion models comes from the observation of γ rays created in the decay of radioactive isotopes produced in the nova. One such isotope, 18F, is believed to be the main source of observable γ rays at and below 511 keV. The main destruction mechanism of 18F is thought to be the 18F(p,α)15O reaction, and uncertainties in the reaction rate arise from uncertainties in the energies, spins, and parities of the nuclear levels in 19Ne above the 18F+p threshold. To measure the properties of these levels, the 19F(3He,t)19Ne∗(γ) reaction was studied at Argonne National Laboratory and the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame.A direct test of nova explosion models comes from the observation of γ rays created in the decay of radioactive isotopes produced in the nova. We report on the construction and commissioning of the high-efficiency CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray CAESAR, a device designed for in-beam γ ‐ray spectroscopy experiments utilizing fast beams of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU). CAESAR consists of 192 CsI(Na) crystals, totaling 290 kg of active scintillator material. For 1 MeV γ rays, a full-energy-peak efficiency of 35% is achieved at an in-beam energy resolution of better than 10% FWHM after event-by-event Doppler reconstruction of the γ rays emitted by nuclei moving with velocities of v / c ∼ 0.3 – 0.4 . The spectral quality of the array allows for the identification of γ ‐ray transitions with intensities of several 10 counts in the full-energy peak and thus opens new avenues for the study of the most exotic nuclei available at the NSCL for in-beam spectroscopy.

The study of the collective properties of nuclear excitations far from stability provides information about the shell structure at extreme conditions. Spectroscopic ob- servables such as the energy or the transition probabilities of the lowest states, in nuclei with large neutron excess, allow to probe the density and isospin dependence of the ef- fective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Emblematic is the case of the evolution of the Ni isotopic chain where several features showed up moving from the most neutron rich stable isotope ( 64 Ni) towards the 78 Ni nucleus where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure. In this framework, we have recently per- formed an experiment with the goal to extract the B(E2; 0 + ! 2 + ) value for the 74 Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment: preliminary results are discussed.

Background: Neutron-rich, even-mass chromium and iron isotopes approaching neutron number $N=40$ have been important benchmarks in the development of shell-model effective interactions incorporating the effects of shell evolution in the exotic regime. Odd-mass manganese nuclei have received less attention, but provide important and complementary sensitivity to these interactions.Purpose: We report the observation of two new $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions in $^{63}\mathrm{Mn}$, which establish the $(9/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ and $(11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ levels on top of the previously known $(7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ first-excited state. The lifetime for the $(7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ and $(9/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ excited states were determined for the first time, while an upper limit could be established for the $(11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ level.Method: Excited states in $^{63}\mathrm{Mn}$ have been populated in inelastic scattering from a $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ target and in the fragmentation of $^{65}\mathrm{Fe}$. $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence relationships were used to establish the decay level scheme. A Doppler line-shape analysis for the Doppler-broadened $(7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $(9/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}),$ and $(11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(9/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ transitions was used to determine (limits for) the corresponding excited-state lifetimes.Results: The low-lying level scheme and the excited-state lifetimes were compared with large-scale shell-model calculations using different model spaces and effective interactions in order to isolate important aspects of shell evolution in this region of structural change.Conclusions: While the theoretical $(7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ and $(9/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ excitation energies show little dependence on the model space, the calculated lifetime of the $(7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ level and calculated energy of the $(11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ level reveal the importance of including the neutron ${g}_{9/2}$ and ${d}_{5/2}$ orbitals in the model space. The LNPS effective shell-model interaction provides the best overall agreement with the new data.

The neutron-rich $N=28$ nucleus $^{44}\mathrm{S}$ was studied using the two-proton knockout reaction from $^{46}\mathrm{Ar}$ at intermediate beam energy. We report the observation of four new excited states, one of which is a strongly prolate deformed 4${}^{+}$ state, as indicated by a shell-model calculation. Its deformation originates in a neutron configuration which is fundamentally different from the ``intruder'' configuration responsible for the ground-state deformation. Consequently, we do not have three coexisting shapes in $^{44}\mathrm{S}$, but three coexisting configurations, corresponding to zero-, one-, and two-neutron particle-hole excitations.

New measurements and reaction model calculations are reported for single neutron pickup reactions onto a fast \nuc{22}{Mg} secondary beam at 84 MeV per nucleon. Measurements were made on both carbon and beryllium targets, having very different structures, allowing a first investigation of the likely nature of the pickup reaction mechanism. The measurements involve thick reaction targets and $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of the projectile-like reaction residue for final-state resolution, that permit experiments with low incident beam rates compared to traditional low-energy transfer reactions. From measured longitudinal momentum distributions we show that the $\nuc{12}{C} (\nuc{22}{Mg},\nuc{23}{Mg}+\gamma)X$ reaction largely proceeds as a direct two-body reaction, the neutron transfer producing bound \nuc{11}{C} target residues. The corresponding reaction on the \nuc{9}{Be} target seems to largely leave the \nuc{8}{Be} residual nucleus unbound at excitation energies high in the continuum. We discuss the possible use of such fast-beam one-neutron pickup reactions to track single-particle strength in exotic nuclei, and also their expected sensitivity to neutron high-$\ell$ (intruder) states which are often direct indicators of shell evolution and the disappearance of magic numbers in the exotic regime., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Probing shell structure at a large neutron excess has been of particular interest in recent times. Neutron‐rich nuclei between the proton shell closures Z = 20 and Z = 28 offer an exotic testing ground for shell evolution. The development of the N = 40 gap between neutron fp and lg9/2 shells gives rise to highly interesting variations of collectivity for nuclei in this region. While 68Ni shows doubly magic properties in level energies and transition strengths, this was not observed in neighbouring nuclei. Especially neutron‐rich Fe isotopes proved particularly resistant to calculational approaches using the canonical valence space (fpg) resulting in important deviations of the predicted collectivity. Only an inclusion of the d5/2‐orbital could solve the problem [1]. Hitherto no transition strengths for 66Fe have been reported. We determined B(E2,21+→01+) values from lifetimes measured with the recoil distance Doppler‐shift method using the Cologne plunger for radioactive beams at National Superconducting ...

The recent assertion that shape coexistence occurs in the neutron-rich isotope $^{43}\mathrm{S}$ implies that a state observed at 940 keV in a previous study is a rotational excitation of the deformed ground state. Here we use results from two intermediate-energy reactions to demonstrate that this state---assigned an energy of 971 keV in the present work---is indeed a rotational state. This result strengthens the case for shape coexistence in $^{43}\mathrm{S}$.

Neutron hole states in the exotic $N=27$ isotope $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ have been populated using the intermediate-energy single-neutron knockout reaction $^{9}\mathrm{Be}(^{45}\mathrm{Cl},^{44}\mathrm{Cl})\mathrm{X}$. The momentum distribution of the residual $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ nuclei after direct population of the ground state is consistent with removal of an $l=1$ neutron. This observation and comparison with a shell-model calculation imply that ${p}_{3/2}$ neutrons from above the $N=28$ major shell closure play important roles in the ground states of both $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ and $^{45}\mathrm{Cl}$. The present result is significant because $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ is even closer to the valley of stability than $^{43}\mathrm{S}$, where a similar result was recently obtained using a $g$-factor measurement.

The study of the evolution of nuclear shells far from stability provides fundamental information about the shape and symmetry of the nuclear mean field. Nuclei with large neutron/proton ratio allow to probe the density dependence of the effective interaction. Indeed, it was recently shown that tensor and three-body forces play an important role in breaking and creating magic numbers. Of particular interest is the region of 78 Ni where the large neutron excess coincides with a double shell closure.We have recently measured the B(E 2; 0+ → 2+ ) of the 74 Ni nucleus in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory of the Michigan State University. The 74 Ni secondary beam has been produced by fragmentation of 86 Kr at 140 AMeV on a thick Be target. Selected radioactive fragments impinged on a secondary 197 Au target where the measurement of the emitted γ -rays allows to extract the Coulomb excitation cross section and related structure information. Preliminary B(E2) values do not point towards an enhancement of the transition matrix element and the comparison to what was already measured by Aoi and co-workers in [1] opens new scenarios in the interpretation of the shell evolution of the Z=28 isotopes.

The r-process is responsible for creating roughly half of the elements heavier than iron. It has recently become understood that the rates at which neutron capture reactions proceed at late times in the r-process may dramatically affect the final abundance pattern. However, direct measurements of neutron capture reaction rates on exotic nuclei are exceptionally difficult, necessitating the development of indirect approaches such as the surrogate technique. The (d,pγ) reaction at low energies was identified as a promising surrogate for the (n,γ) reaction, as both reactions share many characteristics. We report on a program to validate (d,pγ) as a surrogate for (n,γ) using 95Mo as a target. The experimental campaign includes direct measurements of the γ-ray intensities from the decay of excited states populated in the 95Mo(n,γ) and 95Mo(d,pγ) reactions.

Direct reaction techniques are powerful tools to study the single-particle nature of nuclei. Performing direct reactions on short-lived nuclei requires radioactive ion beams produced either via fragmentation or the Isotope Separation OnLine (ISOL) method. Some of the most interesting regions to study with direct reactions are close to the magic numbers where changes in shell structure can be tracked. These changes can impact the final abundances of explosive nucleosynthesis. The structure of the chain of tin isotopes is strongly influenced by the Z=50 proton shell closure, as well as the neutron shell closures lying in the neutron-rich, N=82, and neutron-deficient, N=50, regions. Here we present two examples of direct reactions on exotic tin isotopes. The first uses a one-neutron transfer reaction and a low-energy reaccelerated ISOL beam to study states in 131Sn from across the N=82 shell closure. The second example utilizes a one-neutron knockout reaction on fragmentation beams of neutron-deficient 106,108Sn.
