1. The role of Fission in the search of the Super Heavy Land: Fission modes in heavy and superheavy nuclei. Case study of 180Hg

Abstract: Many observations strongly support the hypothesis that nuclei may fission through several independent fission modes (multimodal fission) interpreted as different prescission shapes and fission paths in a multidimensional potential energy landscape where shell effects are dominant. Mass distributions of the fission fragments are sensitive to the potential energy landscape and appear to be single humped (symmetric) or double humped (asymmetric). In many cases a mixture of both modes is observed. We propose here our study on 180Hg. Binary fission fragments formed in the reaction 68Zn + 112Sn → 180Hg at different excitation energies around the Coulomb barrier were detected using the double-arm time-of-flight technique with the spectrometers CORSET. The experiment was performed at JYFL (Jyvaskyla, Finland). We will discuss an analysis of the mass distributions in terms of fission modes predicted by a five-dimensional fission model. We have found out that the mass distributions can be well reproduced by considering a symmetric fission mode and two asymmetric modes at (AL ≈ 80, AH ≈ 100) and (AL ≈ 70 and AH ≈ 110).

Abstract: A 4 pi light charged particle spectrometer, called 8 pi LP, is in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, for studying reaction mechanisms in low-energy heavy-ion reactions. Besides about 300 telescopes to detect light charged particles, the spectrometer is also equipped with an anular PPAC system to detect evaporation residues and a two-arm time-of-flight spectrometer to detect fission fragments. The spectrometer has been used in several fission dynamics studies using as a probe light charged particles in the fission and evaporation residues (ER) channels. This paper proposes a journey within some open questions about the fission dynamics and a review of the main results concerning nuclear dissipation and fission time-scale obtained from several of these studies. In particular, the advantages of using systems of intermediate fissility will be discussed.

Abstract: The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Frejus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of mu(+) and mu(-) beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular He-6 and Ne-18, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Frejus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. 4. Effect of Non Uniform Out-of-Plane Illumination and Shear Rate on the Accuracy of nPIV Velocity Measurements

Abstract: Nano-particle image velocimetry (nPIV) uses evanescent-wave illumination to measure two velocity components, U and V, tangent to the wall in a region with thickness of order of hundred nano meters. In this region the illumination intensity decays exponentially with distance normal to the wall, z, and hence tracers closer to the wall have “brighter” and “bigger” images than those that are further away, i.e. at larger z. Moreover fluid velocity varies in this region with z and hence tracers at different distance from the wall move at different speeds. Furthermore, Brownian displacement of particle tracers in this region is comparable to the displacement due to the fluid convection. The variation in the displacement of particle images in this region, with different brightness and velocities, can bias the near-wall velocities obtained using standard correlation based PIV method. Artificial nPIV images of nano particle in a flow field with linear out of plane velocity profile were used in this work to investigate the impact of these issues upon the accuracy of nPIV data. Uniform and Gaussian random distribution noise were added to the images to simulate electronic noise and shot noise, respectively. The artificial images were obtained and processed for various experimental parameters to incorporate different illumination profile and shear rates. The results demonstrate that non-uniform illumination affects the bias in the estimated tracer velocity for the shear flow. Non-uniform intensity also affects the bias due to Brownian diffusion; however, correction for Brownian diffusion can reduce this bias error.Copyright © 2010 by ASME

Abstract: The study of the α-particle energy distributions associated with ND and SD states in 151,152Dy has been carried out. The Dy isotopes were produced in the reaction 37Cl +123Sb at 191 MeV via the (α5n) and (α4n) channels, respectively. In 151Dy the α-particle energy distributions associated to ND and SD are very different from each other, both at the low and high energy sides inducing a difference of 3 MeV in the α-particle mean energy. In 152Dy the situation is different; the α-particle spectral shapes are similar and a difference in the α-particle mean energy of only 0.7 MeV is deduced. A description in terms of energy localization of entry states is given.

Abstract: Evaporative [sup 1,2,3]H and [sup 4]He yields and energy spectra have been analyzed in the framework of the statistical model in ten heavy-ion reactions, spanning composite systems with 20[lt][ital Z][lt]56. Transmission coefficients derived from the ingoing-wave boundary condition (IWBCM) or optical models (OM) have been used in the calculations. The effect of using different values of deformation parameters, level-density parameter [ital a] and radii of the real part of the transmission coefficient potentials has been investigated. Except for the low-energy side of the proton spectra, the shape of energy spectra are reasonably well reproduced by both sets of transmission coefficients. While the two models are essentially equivalent for [sup 1]H and [sup 4]He cross sections, they differ significantly in the prediction of [sup 2]H and [sup 3]H cross sections. OM transmission coefficients fail in reproducing [sup 2,3]H cross sections, unless no standard parameters are used, while IWBCM transmission coefficients provide a good overall agreement. The failure of the OM is ascribed to the inclusion of nonfusion reactions in the inverse process.

8. Need for new physics in statistical models of nuclear de-excitation

Abstract: We have measured energy spectra and angular distributions of /sup 1/H and /sup 4/He from 190--MeV /sup 40/Ar+ /sup 27/Al reactions. Comparisons with statistical model calculations show that evaporation from spherical nuclei cannot account for both the energy spectra and angular distributions, using entrance channel spins and evaporation barriers derived from fusion data. Alterations are required in both the emission barriers and the moments of inertia. Extensive nuclear deformation could explain the /sup 4/He data but discrepancies remain with the /sup 1/H spectra, suggesting that additional effects are needed in the models.

Abstract: In a Comment on our analysis of measured {sup 4}He energy spectra for the composite system {sup 60}Ni ({ital E}{sup *}=75 MeV and {ital J}{sub max}=38{h bar}), Nicolis and Sarantites have reported statistical-model calculations which reproduce most of the features of the data assuming spherically symmetric parameters. This result is in disagreement with the strong deformations we have found for this compound nucleus. We show in this reply that the different conclusions concerning the magnitude of reduction in the emission barrier arise essentially from the choice of the transmission coefficients in statistical-model calculations. In particular, optical-model transmission coefficients used by Nicolis and Sarantites provide {sup 4}He energy spectra significantly softer than those obtained using transmission coefficients derived from fusion systematics adopted in our calculations. Nevertheless, even using the optical-model transmission coefficients a significant sub-barrier disagreement between data and calculations still exists, indicating important emitter deformations. A comparison between the two sets of proton transmission coefficients reveals strong differences whose influence on {sup 4}He energy spectra is discussed.

Abstract: WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract: Nuclear viscosity is an indispensable ingredient of the nuclear fission collective dynamical models. It governs the exchange of energy between the collective variables and the thermal bath. Its dependence on the shape and temperature is a matter of controversy. By using systems of intermediate fissility we have demonstrated in a recent study that the viscosity parameters is larger for compact shapes, and decreases for larger deformations of the fissioning system, at variance with the conclusions of the statistical model modified to include empirically viscosity and time scales. In this contribution we propose an experimental scenario to highlight the possible dependence of the viscosity from the temperature.

Abstract: The Trojan Horse Method (THM) has been applied extensively for the last 25 years to measure nuclear reaction cross sections of interest for astrophysics. Although it has been mainly applied for charged particle-induced reactions, recently it has been found to have also a relevant role for neutron-induced reactions. Here, some advantages of THM will be discussed and the preliminary results of the cosmological relevant 7Be(n,α)4He cross section measurement are discussed.

Abstract: The elastic scattering in the reaction $$^{7}$$ 7 Li+$$^{208}$$ 208 Pb was investigated in the bombarding energy range from 25 to 39 MeV. The real and imaginary parts of the optical potential were analyzed by using a phenomenological potential. A dispersion relation analysis is presented in order to investigate the threshold anomaly effect. It is concluded that $$^{7}$$ 7 Li has an intermediate behavior between the tightly bound nuclei such as $$^{16}$$ 16 O and the loosely bound nuclei such as $$^{6}$$ 6 Li where the lack of the threshold anomaly is unambiguously observed. Reaction cross sections are also extracted from the elastic scattering data and its comparison with the ones of other systems has been performed to draw hints on the effect of the breakup channel.

Abstract: Light charged particles emitted by the compound nucleus $^{158}\mathrm{Er}$ produced in the reaction $^{32}\mathrm{S}$ $(180 \mathrm{MeV})+^{126}\mathrm{Te}$, at the excitation energy ${E}_{x}=92$ MeV, have been measured at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in coincidence with fission fragments and evaporation residues. The $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ detector array $8\ensuremath{\pi}\mathrm{LP}$ coupled to a system of parallel-plate avalanche counters to detect evaporation residues has been used. Data have been analyzed in the framework of the statistical model of evaporation with the code pace2_n11. This enlarged version of the code pace2 has been used to reproduce the large set of observables measured in the fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission channels along with experimental prescission neutron multiplicity and fission cross section taken from literature. It is found that the simultaneous reproduction of the prescission neutron, proton, and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle multiplicities can be obtained with zero fission delay without dynamical effects. However, the same set of model input parameters does not allow us to reproduce proton and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle multiplicities in the evaporation channel. Extensive calculations, with different sets of parameters, show the limits of the statistical model in reproducing the whole set of data. This work evidences the importance of measuring a large set of observables in order to obtain a reliable description of the decay of the compound nucleus, and in particular of the fission process.

Abstract: International audience; The features of fission fragments formed in the near barrier reaction $^{32}\hbox {S}$ + $^{197}\hbox {Au}$ ($E^\mathrm{lab}_\mathrm{beam}=166\,\hbox {MeV}$) are investigated. The measurement was performed at the ALTO facility of IPN Orsay, France, with the aim of clarifying the quantitative contribution of the quasi-fission process to the total fission events. The mass and total kinetic energy of the fission fragments were compared to the expectations of the liquid drop model, revealing an asymmetric fission component which may be traced back to a quasi-fission process mixed with the fusion–fission events. The $\gamma $-rays and neutrons measured in coincidence with the fission fragments were used to yield additional information for the discrimination of the two aforementioned mechanisms. All observed trends are consistent and fairly well reproduced by the statistical model.

Abstract: The dynamics of the fission process is expected to affect the evaporation residue cross section because of the fission hindrance due to the nuclear viscosity. Systems of intermediate fissility constitute a suitable environment for testing such hypothesis, since they are characterized by evaporation residue cross sections comparable or larger than the fission ones. Observables related to emitted charged particle, due to their relatively high emission probability, can be used to put stringent constraints on models describing the excited nucleus decay and to recognize the effects of fission dynamics. In this work model simulations are compared with the experimental data collected via the ^{32}S + ^{100}Mo reaction at E_{lab}= 200 MeV. By comparing an extended set of evaporation channel observables the limits of the statistical model and the large improvement coming by using a dynamical model are evidenced. The importance of using a large angular covering apparatus to extract the observable is stressed. The opportunity to measure more sensitive observables by a new detection device in operation at LNL are also discussed., v1: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Studying interactions of radioactive ions with neutrons is particularly demanding and has been performed only in a few cases. Some of these interactions are crucial in several astrophysical contexts. In the present work, the case of the 7Be destruction induced by the (n, α) reaction is investigated at the energies typical of the primordial nucleosynthesis by means of the Trojan Horse Method applied to the 2H(7Be, αα)p quasi-free reaction. The 7Be(n, α)4He cross-section has been measured in a single experiment from ∼2 MeV down to cosmological energies. Abstract: This contribution presents a journey within the open questions about the current use of a temperature dependent nuclear viscosity in models of nuclear fission and proposes an alternative experimental approach by using systems of intermediate fissility. This study is particularly relevant because: i) systems of intermediate fissility offer a suitable framework since the intervals between the compound nucleus and scission point temperatures with increasing excitation energy are much smaller than in the case of heavier systems, ii) the measurement of observables in the ER channel translates into a larger set of effective constraints for the models.

Abstract: The elastic scattering process for the nuclear reactions induced by the Radioactive Ion Beams 7Be and 8B on a 208Pb target was measured for the first time in the energy range around the Coulomb barrier. Extensive theoretical calculations within the framework of the optical model were performed. An excellent agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions was achieved for the reaction 7Be + 208Pb, while a comprehensive understanding of the reaction dynamics induced by the more exotic projectile 8B is still far to be reached. Predictions of the cross section for the breakup for both systems will also be given., The 8B experiment was performed at RI Beam Factory operated by RIKEN Nishina Center and CNS, University of Tokyo. 21. Clustering effects in 48Cr composite nuclei produced via 24Mg + 24Mg reaction

Abstract: In the framework of studying clustering effects in N=Z light nuclei, an experiment was carried out to get information on the properties of the 48Cr composite nuclei produced via the 24Mg +24Mg reaction. In particular, the study regards the 48Cr at 60 MeV of excitation energy where a resonance with a narrow width (170 KeV) has been found by measuring the elastic and anelastic channels. To determine the deformation of this state, evaporative Light Charged Particles (LCP) are measured and compared to the Statistical Model (SM) predictions, which are very sensitive to nuclear deformation. The experiment was performed at LNL using the 8ĒLP apparatus to select LCPs and a Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) system to detect the Evaporation Residues (ER). Preliminary results on the measurements of ER – LCP and LCP – LCP angular correlations are presented which indicate the presence of a very large deformation.The analysis will proceed with the extraction of the LCP energy spectra and with the angular correlations for high multiplicity channels to determine the deformation.

Abstract: International audience; The overlap in the mass symmetric region of the reaction products from fusion-fission and quasi-fission complicates the assignment of symmetric events to complete fusion on the basis of the mass distribution alone. Additional observables, besides mass distribution, should be used. The method proposed here relies on the fact that fusion-fission and quasifission are characterized by a different timescale. Within this framework we performed a detailed study to find out if timescales can be probed via angular momentum as measured via γ rays multiplicity. The proof of principle was carried out by measuring the γ rays in coincidence with two fragments in the reaction 32S + 197Au at beam energy near the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been performed at the Tandem ALTO facility at IPN Orsay using a detection setup consisting of ORGAM and PARIS γ detector arrays coupled with the CORSET time-of-flight spectrometer. Preliminary results on the sensitivity of this method to distinguish reaction channels with different dynamics are discusses.

Abstract: Nuclear viscosity is an irreplaceable ingredient of nuclear fission collective dynamical models. It drives the exchange of energy between the collective variables and the thermal bath of single particle degrees of freedom. Its dependence on the shape and temperature is a matter of controversy. By using systems of intermediate fissility we have demonstrated in a recent study that the viscosity parameters is larger for compact shapes, and decreases for larger deformations of the fissioning system, at variance with the conclusions of the statistical model modified to include empirically viscosity and time scales. In this contribution we propose an experimental scenario to highlight the possible dependence of the viscosity from the temperature.

Abstract: International audience; Compound nucleus fission and quasi-fission are both binary decay channels whose common properties make the experimental separation between them difficult. A way to achieve this separation could be to probe the angular momentum of the binary fragments. This can be done detecting gamma rays in coincidence with the two fragments. As a case study, the reaction 32S + 197Au near the Coulomb barrier has been performed at the Tandem ALTO facility at IPN ORSAY. ORGAM and PARIS, two different gamma detectors arrays, are coupled with the CORSET detector, a two-arm time-of-flight spectrometer. TOF-TOF data were analyzed to reconstruct the mass-energy distribution of the primary fragments coupled with gamma multiplicity and spectroscopic analysis. Preliminary results of will be shown.

Abstract: Multi-nucleon transfer reactions are nowadays the only known mean to produce neutron-rich nuclei in the Terra Incognita. The closed-shell region N=126 is crucial for both studying shell-quenching in exotic nuclei and the r-process, being its last "waiting-point". The choice of suitable reactions is challenging and a favorable case is 136Xe+208Pb, near the Coulomb barrier, because their neutron shell-closures play a stabilizing role, favoring the proton-transfer from lead to xenon. TOF-TOF data were analyzed to reconstruct the mass-energy distribution of the primary fragments. Preliminary results of an experiment held at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with PRISMA, aimed at A and Z identification of the products, will be shown. peerReviewed

Abstract: The EXOTIC facility was developed to produce light radioactive beams and it is installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL) of INFN. We have explored the capabilities of EXOTIC as a beam separator for studies of heavy ion fusion-evaporation reactions. For this purpose, the facility has been slightly modified to allow the detection and identification of the fusion-evaporation residues (ER). We have measured fusion reactions for the two systems S-32 + Ca-48 and S-32 + Ni-64 where the cross sections are known from previous experiments at LNL. The ion optical parameters of EXOTIC have been set to maximize the ER yield in the detector system for the various cases. A good and clean separation of the ER from beam-like particles was obtained in the experimental Energy-Time of Flight correlation plots. These encouraging results have been compared with the performance of the electrostatic deflector set-up PISOLO, routinely used at LNL for sub-barrier fusion experiments. The beam rejection factor of EXOTIC at 0 degrees is comparable to the one of PISOLO at 2 degrees-3 degrees, while a gain of overall efficiency up to a factor 3 has been obtained with EXOTIC. We briefly discuss possible ways of improving these results.

Abstract: The systems of intermediate fissility 132Ce and 158Er have been studied experimentally and theoretically in order to investigate the dissipation properties of nuclear matter. Cross sections of fusion-fission and evaporation residues channels together with charged particles multiplicities in both channels, their spectra, angular correlations and mass-energy distribution of fission fragments have been measured. Theoretical analysis has been performed using multi-dimensional stochastic approach with realistic treatment of particle evaporation. The results of analysis show that full one-body or unusually strong two-body dissipation allows to reproduce experimental data. No temperature dependent dissipation was needed.

28. Search for isospin effects on nuclear level density

Abstract: Studies on the isospin dependence of the level density have been recently reported in the literature for nuclei with 20 ≤ A ≤ 110. Corrections to the level density have been deduced which would imply a significant reduction of this quantity for nuclei far from the valley of stability. Isospin effects on the level density are also expected through the symmetry energy contribution to the nuclear masses, which is predicted to increase with the temperature. According to these findings, we have implemented the statistical model in order to account for isospin effects on the level density parameter a and on the temperature-dependent symmetry energy. We present the results of calculations for the decay of a variety of neutron-rich composite systems. We found that isospin produces sizable eïňĂects on difierent observables, this result being promising for future experiments with the second generation RIB facilities SPES and SPIRAL2. We report the results of a first experiment aimed at searching for isospin effects in the decay of 139 Eu composite nuclei produced by a stable beam at E x =90 MeV.

Abstract: Selected experiments in fundamental physics have been proposed for many years at the Tandem Accelerator of the University of Napoli 'Federico II's Department of Physics as a part of a one-semester laboratory course for graduate students. The aim of this paper is to highlight the educational value of the experimental realization of the nuclear reaction 19F(p,α)16O. With the purpose of verifying the mass–energy equivalence principle, different aspects of both classical and modern physics can be investigated, e.g. conservation laws, atomic models, nuclear physics applications to compositional analysis, nuclear cross-section, Q-value and nuclear spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract: It is well accepted that fission is a slow process dominated by nuclear viscosity. This is demonstrated by experimental observations, mainly based on measurements of fission fragment TKE, pre-scission light particles and GDR γ-ray multiplicities, energy spectra. The fission time-scale, as well as the nature of energy dissipation during the process and its dependence on the nuclear shape and temperature are the main aspects which have often been addressed. In spite of the extensive work, there are still many open questions on the dynamics of the fission process, mainly due to the lack of constraints on the models and to the different probes used. Intermediate fissily systems are particularly suited for this study as they present comparable cross sections in the fusion-fission and fusion-evaporation channels, allowing to measure observables in both channels, and therefore to further constrain the models. Furthermore, the path from equilibrium to saddle configuration is expected to dominate with respect to saddle-to-scission one, reducing the complexity of the physical process to be studied. We present here an in depth review of a study performed on the nucleus 132Ce, which shows the limits of the statistical model in accounting for an extended set of observables. We further present the analysis of the same data with a 3D Langevin dynamical approach which proves to be capable of reproducing the values of the whole set of observables. Our analysis reinforce the fact that extended data sets are essential to achieve reliable simulations to address the open questions on fission dynamics and strongly suggest the use of setups of high efficiency.

Abstract: Inclusive and exclusive cross sections have been measured for different projectile breakup channels. It is observed that the inclusive cross sections are larger than the exclusive ones. It is found that other processes, besides the direct breakup channel, significantly contribute to the inclusive channels. A clear alpha+x cluster structure has been found from coincidence data.
