1. Quantifying the seasonal variations in and regional transport of PM2.5 in the Yangtze River Delta region, China: characteristics, sources, and health risks

Abstract: Given the increasing complexity of the chemical composition of PM2.5, identifying and quantitatively assessing the contributions of pollution sources has played an important role in formulating policies to control particle pollution. This study provides a comprehensive assessment between PM2.5 chemical characteristics, sources, and health risks based on sampling data conducted over 1 year (March 2018 to February 2019) in Nanjing. Results show that PM2.5 exhibits a distinct variation across different seasons, which is primarily driven by emissions, meteorological conditions, and the chemical conversion of gaseous pollutants. First, the chemical mass reconstruction shows that secondary inorganic aerosols (62.5 %) and carbonaceous aerosols (21.3 %) contributed most to the PM2.5 mass. The increasing oxidation rates of SO2 and NO2 from summer to winter indicate that the secondary transformation of gaseous pollutants is strongly positively correlated with relative humidity. Second, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) method shows that identified PM2.5 sources include secondary inorganic aerosol source (SIS, 42.5 %), coal combustion (CC, 22.4 %), industry source (IS, 17.3 %), vehicle emission (VE, 10.7 %), fugitive dust (FD, 5.8 %), and other sources (1.3 %). The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model and the concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis are used to further explore different spatial distributions and regional transport of sources. The concentrations (10–11 µg m−3) of SIS and CC distribute in Nanjing and central China in winter. The concentrations (8–10 µg m−3) of IS and VE are potentially located north of Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi. Finally, the health risk assessment indicates that the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of toxic elements (Cr, As, Ni, Mn, V, and Pb) mainly come from IS, VE, and CC, which are within the tolerance or acceptable level. Although the main source of pollution in Nanjing is SIS at present, we should pay more attention to the health burden of vehicle emissions, coal combustion, and industrial processes.

Abstract: Approximately 3 billion people worldwide cook with solid fuels, such as wood, charcoal, and agricultural residues. These fuels, also used for residential heating, are often combusted in inefficient devices, producing carbonaceous emissions. Between 2.6 and 3.8 million premature deaths occur as a result of exposure to fine particulate matter from the resulting household air pollution (Health Effects Institute, 2018a; World Health Organization, 2018). Household air pollution also contributes to ambient air pollution; the magnitude of this contribution is uncertain. Here, we simulate the distribution of the two major health-damaging outdoor air pollutants (PM2.5 and O3) using state-of-the-science emissions databases and atmospheric chemical transport models to estimate the impact of household combustion on ambient air quality in India. The present study focuses on New Delhi and the SOMAARTH Demographic, Development, and Environmental Surveillance Site (DDESS) in the Palwal District of Haryana, located about 80 km south of New Delhi. The DDESS covers an approximate population of 200 000 within 52 villages. The emissions inventory used in the present study was prepared based on a national inventory in India (Sharma et al., 2015, 2016), an updated residential sector inventory prepared at the University of Illinois, updated cookstove emissions factors from Fleming et al. (2018b), and PM2.5 speciation from cooking fires from Jayarathne et al. (2018). Simulation of regional air quality was carried out using the US Environmental Protection Agency Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ) in conjunction with the Weather Research and Forecasting modeling system (WRF) to simulate the meteorological inputs for CMAQ, and the global chemical transport model GEOS-Chem to generate concentrations on the boundary of the computational domain. Comparisons between observed and simulated O3 and PM2.5 levels are carried out to assess overall airborne levels and to estimate the contribution of household cooking emissions. Observed and predicted ozone levels over New Delhi during September 2015, December 2015, and September 2016 routinely exceeded the 8 h Indian standard of 100 µg m−3, and, on occasion, exceeded 180 µg m−3. PM2.5 levels are predicted over the SOMAARTH headquarters (September 2015 and September 2016), Bajada Pahari (a village in the surveillance site; September 2015, December 2015, and September 2016), and New Delhi (September 2015, December 2015, and September 2016). The predicted fractional impact of residential emissions on anthropogenic PM2.5 levels varies from about 0.27 in SOMAARTH HQ and Bajada Pahari to about 0.10 in New Delhi. The predicted secondary organic portion of PM2.5 produced by household emissions ranges from 16 % to 80 %. Predicted levels of secondary organic PM2.5 during the periods studied at the four locations averaged about 30 µg m−3, representing approximately 30 % and 20 % of total PM2.5 levels in the rural and urban stations, respectively.

3. Quadratic magneto-optical effect in hexagonal non-collinear antiferromagnets

Abstract: Quadratic magneto-optical (MO) effects can be utilized to investigate the spin order in antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials; however, the previously reported studies were all limited in antiferromagnets with collinear AFM order. Here, we develop a phenomenological theory to investigate the quadratic MO effects in hexagonal non-collinear AFM crystals with triangular spin structures. Based on the permittivity tensor up to the second-order in magnetization, we derive the formula to describe the quadratic MO responses and perform numerical calculations to obtain the MO rotation angle for different AFM spin configurations and sample orientations. For the sample with its spin plane lying perpendicular to the surface plane, we have revealed the emergence of quadratic MO response, which exhibits a strong dependence on the light incident angle. The MO rotation angle shows an approximately sinusoidal variation with a periodicity of 180° when the sample is rotated around its surface normal. The size of the MO response and its deviation from the sinusoidal form are analyzed for different values of the second-order permittivity tensor elements. This study provides important insights into the non-collinear AFM spin-induced quadratic MO effect, which may be used as a guidance for optical detections of the non-collinear AFM order, and, in particular, the ultrafast spin dynamics using the optical pump–probe technique.

5. Formation of hydroxyl radicals from photolysis of secondary organic aerosol material

Abstract: This paper demonstrates that OH radicals are formed by photolysis of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) material formed by terpene ozonolysis. The SOA is collected on filters, dissolved in water containing a radical trap (benzoic acid), and then exposed to ultraviolet light in a photochemical reactor. The OH formation rates, which are similar for both α-pinene and limonene SOA, are measured from the formation rate of p-hydroxybenzoic acid as measured using offline HPLC analysis. To evaluate whether the OH is formed by photolysis of H2O2 or organic hydroperoxides (ROOH), the peroxide content of the SOA was measured using the horseradish peroxidase-dichlorofluorescein (HRP-DCF) assay, which was calibrated using H2O2. The OH formation rates from SOA are 5 times faster than from the photolysis of H2O2 solutions whose concentrations correspond to the peroxide content of the SOA solutions, assuming that the HRP-DCF signal arises from H2O2 alone. The higher rates of OH formation from SOA are likely due to ROOH photolysis, but we cannot rule out a contribution from secondary processes as well. This result is substantiated by photolysis experiments conducted with t-butyl hydroperoxide and cumene hydroperoxide which produce over 3 times more OH than photolysis of equivalent concentrations of H2O2. Relative to the peroxide level in the SOA and assuming that the peroxides drive most of the ultraviolet absorption, the quantum yield for OH generation from α-pinene SOA is 0.8 ± 0.4. This is the first demonstration of an efficient photolytic source of OH in SOA, one that may affect both cloud water and aerosol chemistry.

6. Photochemical processing of aqueous atmospheric brown carbon

Abstract: Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a collective term for light absorbing organic compounds in the atmosphere. While the identification of BrC and its formation mechanisms is currently a central effort in the community, little is known about the atmospheric removal processes of aerosol BrC. As a result, we report on a series of laboratory studies of photochemical processing of BrC in the aqueous phase, by direct photolysis and OH oxidation. Solutions of ammonium sulfate mixed with glyoxal (GLYAS) or methylglyoxal (MGAS) are used as surrogates for a class of secondary BrC mediated by imine intermediates. Three nitrophenol species, namely 4-nitrophenol, 5-nitroguaiacol and 4-nitrocatechol, were investigated as a class of water-soluble BrC originating from biomass burning. Photochemical processing induced significant changes in the absorptive properties of BrC. The imine-mediated BrC solutions exhibited rapid photo-bleaching with both direct photolysis and OH oxidation, with atmospheric half-lives of minutes to a few hours. The nitrophenol species exhibited photo-enhancement in the visible range during direct photolysis and the onset of OH oxidation, but rapid photo-bleaching was induced by further OH exposure on an atmospheric timescale of an hour or less. To illustrate the atmospheric relevance of this work, we also performed direct photolysis experiments on water-soluble organic carbon extracted from biofuel combustion samples and observed rapid changes in the optical properties of these samples as well. Overall, these experiments indicate that atmospheric models need to incorporate representations of atmospheric processing of BrC species to accurately model their radiative impacts.

7. Aqueous-phase photooxidation of levoglucosan – a mechanistic study using aerosol time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometry (Aerosol ToF-CIMS)

Abstract: Levoglucosan (LG) is a widely employed tracer for biomass burning (BB). Recent studies have shown that LG can react rapidly with hydroxyl (OH) radicals in the aqueous phase despite many mass balance receptor models assuming it to be inert during atmospheric transport. In the current study, aqueous-phase photooxidation of LG by OH radicals was performed in the laboratory. The reaction kinetics and products were monitored by aerosol time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometry (Aerosol ToF-CIMS). Approximately 50 reaction products were detected by the Aerosol ToF-CIMS during the photooxidation experiments, representing one of the most detailed product studies yet performed. By following the evolution of mass defects of product peaks, unique trends of adding oxygen (+O) and removing hydrogen (−2H) were observed among the products detected, providing useful information for determining potential reaction mechanisms and sequences. Additionally, bond-scission reactions take place, leading to reaction intermediates with lower carbon numbers. We introduce a data analysis framework where the average oxidation state (OSc) is plotted against a novel molecular property: double-bond-equivalence-to-carbon ratio (DBE/#C). The trajectory of LG photooxidation on this plot suggests formation of polycarbonyl intermediates and their subsequent conversion to carboxylic acids as a general reaction trend. We also determined the rate constant of LG with OH radicals at room temperature to be 1.08 ± 0.16 × 109 M−1 s−1. By coupling an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) to the system, we observed a rapid decay of the mass fraction of organic signals at mass-to-charge ratio 60 (f60), corresponding closely to the LG decay monitored by the Aerosol ToF-CIMS. The trajectory of LG photooxidation on a f44–f60 correlation plot matched closely to literature field measurement data. This implies that aqueous-phase photooxidation might be partially contributing to aging of BB particles in the ambient atmosphere.

8. Formation of aqueous-phase α-hydroxyhydroperoxides (α-HHP): potential atmospheric impacts

Abstract: The focus of this work is on quantifying the degree of the aqueous-phase formation of α-hydroxyhydroperoxides (α-HHPs) via reversible nucleophilic addition of H2O2 to aldehydes. Formation of this class of highly oxygenated organic hydroperoxides represents a poorly characterized aqueous-phase processing pathway that may lead to enhanced SOA formation and aerosol toxicity. Specifically, the equilibrium constants of α-HHP formation have been determined using proton nuclear-magnetic-resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy and proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). Significant α-HHP formation was observed from formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, glycolaldehyde, glyoxylic acid, and methylglyoxal, but not from methacrolein and ketones. Low temperatures enhanced the formation of α-HHPs but slowed their formation rates. High inorganic salt concentrations shifted the equilibria toward the hydrated form of the aldehydes and slightly suppressed α-HHP formation. Using the experimental equilibrium constants, we predict the equilibrium concentration of α-HHPs to be in the μM level in cloud water, but it may also be present in the mM level in aerosol liquid water (ALW), where the concentrations of H2O2 and aldehydes can be high. Formation of α-HHPs in ALW may significantly affect the effective Henry's law constants of H2O2 and aldehydes but may not affect their gas-phase levels. The photochemistry and reactivity of this class of atmospheric species have not been studied.

9. Hydroxyl radical reactivity at the air-ice interface

Abstract: Hydroxyl radicals are important oxidants in the atmosphere and in natural waters. They are also expected to be important in snow and ice, but their reactivity has not been widely studied in frozen aqueous solution. We have developed a spectroscopic probe to monitor the formation and reactions of hydroxyl radicals in situ. Hydroxyl radicals are produced in aqueous solution via the photolysis of nitrite, nitrate, and hydrogen peroxide, and react rapidly with benzene to form phenol. Similar phenol formation rates were observed in aqueous solution and bulk ice. However, no reaction was observed at air-ice interfaces, or when bulk ice samples were crushed prior to photolysis to increase their surface area. We also monitored the heterogeneous reaction between benzene present at air-water and air-ice interfaces with gas-phase OH produced from HONO photolysis. Rapid phenol formation was observed on water surfaces, but no reaction was observed at the surface of ice. Under the same conditions, we observed rapid loss of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) anthracene at air-water interfaces, but no loss was observed at air-ice interfaces. Our results suggest that the reactivity of hydroxyl radicals toward aromatic organics is similar in bulk ice samples and in aqueous solution, but is significantly suppressed in the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) that exists at air-ice interfaces.

Abstract: In this communication, a novel transverse slot array with standing-wave excitation using substrate-integrated coaxial line (SICL) technique is proposed. The transverse series slots are arranged with a uniform spacing of one guided wavelength and centered over the inner strip of the SICL. A $5\times 1$ element linear subarray is designed with suppressed sidelobe levels (SLLs). A tapering power divider is then adopted to feed eight such subarrays and finally a $5\times 8\,\,2$ -D array is fabricated and tested for demonstration. A −10 dB impedance bandwidth (BW) from 33.87 to 35.10 GHz (3.57% at 34.5 GHz) is measured out with a peak broadside gain of 18.82 dBi. The E-plane and H-plane SLLs are −18.4 and −19.2 dB, respectively. Agreement between theory and experiment has been found to be good for both the linear array and the proposed antenna.

13. Observation of a Near-Threshold Enhancement in the pp¯ Mass Spectrum from Radiative J/ψ→γpp¯ Decays

18. Spectro-Imaging of the Asymmetric Inner Molecular and Dust Shell Region of the Mira Variable W Hya with MIDI/VLTI1

Abstract: We have observed W Hya, one of the closest and best-studied oxygen-rich evolved stars, in the dust sensitive mid-IR spectral domain with the interferometric instrument MIDI. Images could be obtained for the first time with MIDI in 25 wavelengths bins with the image reconstruction software MiRA using only the modulus of the visibilities. This still remains one of the few cases in which images could be successfully recovered due to the difficulties inherent to optical/infrared interferometry concerning the sparseness of the UV-plane and the missing Fourier phase information. Different regularization terms were compared and the influence of the UV-coverage was investigated. The lack of Fourier phase information, however, still limits the interpretation of the images. W Hya appears clearly nonsymmetric and the size is wavelength dependent. The photosphere, molecular layers, and dust formation zone could be resolved with an photospheric Gaussian FWHM diameter of 42 ± 2 mas (corresponding to 4.1 AU) and a dust layer of presumably amorphous aluminum oxide (Al2O3) at around two photospheric radii. The position angle of the major axis of the elongated structure could be determined to be (15 ± 10)° with a less well defined axis ratio between 0.4 and 0.6 showing that the dust forms primarily along a N-S axis. By comparing the elongated structure seen with MIDI with the Herschel/PACS 70 μm image at much larger scales, one can conclude that the asymmetry in the mass-loss most likely originates in the very close vicinity of the star and is thus not due to an interaction with the ambient media.

Abstract: Context. The mass-loss process from evolved stars is a key ingredient for our understanding of many fields of astrophysics, including stellar evolution and the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium (ISM) via stellar yields. Nevertheless, many questions are still unsolved, one of which is the geometry of the mass-loss process. Aims. Taking advantage of the results from the Herschel Mass loss of Evolved StarS (MESS) programme, we initiated a coordinated effort to characterise the geometry of mass loss from evolved red giants at various spatial scales. Methods. For this purpose we used the MID-infrared interferometric Instrument (MIDI) to resolve the inner envelope of 14 asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs) in the MESS sample. In this contribution we present an overview of the interferometric data collected within the frame of our Large Programme, and we also add archive data for completeness. We studied the geometry of the inner atmosphere by comparing the observations with predictions from different geometric models. Results. Asymmetries are detected for the following five stars: R Leo, RT Vir, π1Gruis, omi Ori, and R Crt. All the objects are O-rich or S-type, suggesting that asymmetries in the N band are more common among stars with such chemistry. We speculate that this fact is related to the characteristics of the dust grains. Except for one star, no interferometric variability is detected, i.e. the changes in size of the shells of non-mira stars correspond to changes of the visibility of less than 10%. The observed spectral variability confirms previous findings from the literature. The detection of dust in our sample follows the location of the AGBs in the IRAS colour-colour diagram: More dust is detected around oxygen-rich stars in region II and in the carbon stars in region VII. The SiC dust feature does not appear in the visibility spectrum of the U Ant and S Sct, which are two carbon stars with detached shells. Abstract: Wearing lead X-ray-protective aprons is a routine in nuclear medicine department in parts of China. However, the staff are often perplexed by questions such as if it is imperative to wear aprons when injecting radioactive drugs, how much radiation dosage can be shielded and if the apron will produce secondary radiation instead? To answer these questions, a semiconductor detector was employed to record different gamma and X-ray spectra with and without the lead apron or lead sheet. Then, we could estimate the signal shielding ratio to different photons for the lead apron and compare with the hospitals measured data. In general, the two results coincided well. The spectral results showed that the detrimental secondary X-rays irradiation rises when the energy of gamma rays exceeds the K absorption edge of lead (88 keV). Moreover, the aprons are not so effective for gamma rays of 364 keV emitted from 131I and 511 keV emitted from the positron radioactive nuclides. This work is purely a physical measurement in the laboratory. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative study on the level of gamma rays protection offered by the medical lead aprons and the importance of the spectroscopic measurements is discussed in this paper.

Abstract: Ultrafast betatron x-ray emission from electron oscillations in laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) has been widely investigated as a promising source. Betatron x-rays are usually produced via self-injected electron beams, which are not controllable and are not optimized for x-ray yields. Here, we present a new method for bright hard x-ray emission via ionization injection from the K-shell electrons of nitrogen into the accelerating bucket. A total photon yield of 8 × 108/shot and 108 photons with energy greater than 110 keV is obtained. The yield is 10 times higher than that achieved with self-injection mode in helium under similar laser parameters. The simulation suggests that ionization-injected electrons are quickly accelerated to the driving laser region and are subsequently driven into betatron resonance. The present scheme enables the single-stage betatron radiation from LWFA to be extended to bright γ-ray radiation, which is beyond the capability of 3rd generation synchrotrons.

Abstract: Two independent experiments that demonstrate memories for single quantum excitations with storage times on the order of a millisecond—two orders of magnitude longer than reported so far—should help to bring practical long-distance quantum-communication networks a step closer. Quantum memories for the storage and retrieval of quantum information are extremely sensitive to environmental influences, which limits their storage times. The ground states of atoms and ions are potential candidates for quantum memories, but although coherence times of the order of a few seconds for atoms1,2 and hundreds of seconds for ions3,4,5 have been demonstrated, long-lived storage and retrieval of single quantum excitations remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we report a quantum memory using the magnetically insensitive clock transition in atomic rubidium confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We observe quantum memory lifetimes exceeding 6 ms, more than two orders of magnitude longer than previously reported6. This advance is an important step towards the realization of long-distance quantum networks and the controlled production of complex entangled states of matter and light.

Abstract: We report measurements of the line shapes of D + D − , D 0 D ¯ 0 and D D ¯ production as well as the line shape of the ratio of the production rates of D + D − and D 0 D ¯ 0 in e + e − annihilation at ψ ( 3770 ) resonance. We find that the line shapes of D + D − , D 0 D ¯ 0 and D D ¯ production are similar to an anomalous line shape of cross sections for e + e − → hadrons observed in the center-of-mass energy range from 3.70 to 3.87 GeV.

Abstract: In the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, muon detection in the forward direction is accomplished by cathode strip chambers (CSC). These detectors identify muons, provide a fast muon trigger, and give a precise measurement of the muon trajectory. There are 468 six-plane CSCs in the system. The efficiency of finding muon trigger primitives (muon track segments) was studied using 36 CMS CSCs and cosmic ray muons during the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge (MTCC) exercise conducted by the CMS experiment in 2006. In contrast to earlier studies that used muon beams to illuminate a very small chamber area ( 0.01 m 2 ), results presented in this paper were obtained by many installed CSCs operating in situ over an area of ≈ 23 m 2 as a part of the CMS experiment. The efficiency of finding two-dimensional trigger primitives within six-layer chambers was found to be 99.93 ± 0.03 % . These segments, found by the CSC electronics within 800 ns after the passing of a muon through the chambers, are the input information for the Level-1 muon trigger and, also, are a necessary condition for chambers to be read out by the Data Acquisition System.

Abstract: Rare decay modes J / ψ → D s − π + + c.c. , J / ψ → D − π + + c.c. , and J / ψ → D ¯ 0 K ¯ 0 + c.c. are searched for using 5.77 × 10 7 J / ψ events collected with the BESII detector at the BEPC. No signal above background is observed. We present upper limits on the branching fractions of B ( J / ψ → D s − π + ) 1.3 × 10 −4 , B ( J / ψ → D − π + ) 7.5 × 10 −5 , and B ( J / ψ → D ¯ 0 K ¯ 0 ) 1.7 × 10 −4 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: R values measured with the BESII detector at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 5.0 GeV are fitted to determine resonance parameters (mass, total width, electron width) of the high mass charmonium states, ψ ( 3770 ) , ψ ( 4040 ) , ψ ( 4160 ) and ψ ( 4415 ) . Various effects, including the interferences and relative phases between the resonances, the energy-dependence of the full widths, and the initial state radiative correction, are examined. The results are compared to previous studies.

Abstract: The decays of J / ψ and ψ ( 2 S ) to n K S 0 Λ ¯ + c.c. are observed and measured for the first time, and the perturbative QCD “12%” rule is tested, based on 5.8 × 10 7 J / ψ and 1.4 × 10 7 ψ ( 2 S ) events collected with BESII detector at the Beijing Electron–Positron Collider. No obvious enhancement near n Λ ¯ threshold in J / ψ → n K S 0 Λ ¯ + c.c. is observed, and the upper limit on the branching ratio of J / ψ → K S 0 X , X → n Λ ¯ is determined.

Abstract: With singly-tagged D ¯ samples selected from the data collected at and around 3.773 GeV with the BESII detector at the BEPC collider, we have measured the branching fractions for the inclusive K ± decays of D + and D 0 mesons, which are BF ( D + → K − X ) = ( 24.7 ± 1.3 ± 1.2 ) % , BF ( D + → K + X ) = ( 6.1 ± 0.9 ± 0.4 ) % , BF ( D 0 → K − X ) = ( 57.8 ± 1.6 ± 3.2 ) % and BF ( D 0 → K + X ) = ( 3.5 ± 0.7 ± 0.3 ) % , respectively. We have also measured the branching fractions for the inclusive semileptonic decays of D + and D 0 mesons to be BF ( D + → e + X ) = ( 15.2 ± 0.9 ± 0.8 ) % and BF ( D 0 → e + X ) = ( 6.3 ± 0.7 ± 0.4 ) % . These yield the ratio of their partial widths to be Γ ( D + → e + X ) / Γ ( D 0 → e + X ) = 0.95 ± 0.12 ± 0.07 .

Abstract: By analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb−1 taken at s = 3.773 GeV and 6.5 pb−1 taken at s = 3.650 GeV with the BESII detector at the BEPC collider, we have measured the observed cross sections for 12 exclusive light hadron final states produced in e + e − annihilation at the two energy points. We have also set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and the branching fractions for ψ ( 3770 ) decay to these final states at 90% C.L.

Abstract: We report measurements of the observed cross sections for e+e-→ωπ+π-, ωK+K-, ωpp, K+K-ρ0π0, K+K-ρ+π-+c.c., K*0K-π+π0+c.c., K*+K-π+π-+c.c., φπ+π-π0 and ΛΛπ0 at $\sqrt{s}= 3.773$ and 3.650 GeV. Upper limits (90% C.L.) are given for observed cross sections and for ψ(3770) decay branching fractions for production of these final states. These measurements are made by analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb-1 collected at $\sqrt{s}=$3.773 GeV and 6.5 pb-1 collected at $\sqrt{s}=$3.650 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider.

Abstract: By analyzing the R values measured at 68 energy points in the energy region between 3.650 and 3.872 GeV reported in our previous paper, we have precisely measured the mass, the total width and the leptonic width of the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance to be M ψ ( 3770 ) = 3772.4 ± 0.4 ± 0.3 MeV , Γ ψ ( 3770 ) tot = 28.5 ± 1.2 ± 0.2 MeV and Γ ψ ( 3770 ) e e = 277 ± 11 ± 13 eV , respectively. We have measured the leptonic branching fraction of the ψ ( 3770 ) decays and the ψ ( 3770 ) production cross section at its peak to be B [ ψ ( 3770 ) → e + e − ] = ( 0.97 ± 0.03 ± 0.05 ) × 10 −5 and σ prd [ e + e − → ψ ( 3770 ) ] = 10.0 ± 0.3 ± 0.5 nb , respectively. The latter one results in the corresponding observed cross section of σ obs [ e + e − → ψ ( 3770 ) ] = 7.2 ± 0.2 ± 0.4 nb . We have also measured R uds = 2.121 ± 0.023 ± 0.084 for the continuum light hadron production in the region from 3.650 to 3.872 GeV.

Abstract: With a sample of 14 × 10 6 ψ ( 2 S ) events collected by the BESII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC), the decay channels ψ ( 2 S ) → B 8 B ¯ 8 ( p p ¯ , Λ Λ ¯ , Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 , Ξ − Ξ ¯ + ) are measured, and their branching ratios are determined to be ( 3.36 ± 0.09 ± 0.25 ) × 10 −4 , ( 3.39 ± 0.20 ± 0.32 ) × 10 −4 , ( 2.35 ± 0.36 ± 0.32 ) × 10 −4 , ( 3.03 ± 0.40 ± 0.32 ) × 10 −4 , respectively. In the decay ψ ( 2 S ) → p p ¯ , the angular distribution parameter α is determined to be 0.85 ± 0.24 ± 0.04 .

Abstract: Neutron yields have direct correlation with the energy of incident deuterons in experiments of laser deuterated target interaction [Roth et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 044802 (2013) and Higginson et al., Phys. Plasmas 18, 100703 (2011)], while deuterated plasma density is also an important parameter. Experiments at the Shenguang II laser facility have produced neutrons with energy of 2.45 MeV using d (d, n) He reaction. Deuterated foil target and K-shaped target were employed to study the influence of plasma density on neutron yields. Neutron yield generated by K-shaped target (nearly 10(6)) was two times higher than by foil target because the K-shaped target results in higher density plasma. Interferometry and multi hydro-dynamics simulation confirmed the importance of plasma density for enhancement of neutron yields.

Abstract: Results are presented on J / ψ radiative decays to π + π − and π 0 π 0 based on a sample of 58M J / ψ events taken with the BES II detector. Partial wave analyses are carried out using the relativistic covariant tensor amplitude method in the 1.0 to 2.3 GeV / c 2 π π mass range. There are conspicuous peaks due to the f 2 ( 1270 ) and two 0 + + states in the 1.45 and 1.75 GeV / c 2 mass regions. The first 0 + + state has a mass of 1466 ± 6 ± 20 MeV / c 2 , a width of 108 −11 +14 ± 25 MeV / c 2 , and a branching fraction B ( J / ψ → γ f 0 ( 1500 ) → γ π + π − ) = ( 0.67 ± 0.02 ± 0.30 ) × 10 −4 . Spin 0 is strongly preferred over spin 2. The second 0 + + state peaks at 1765 −3 +4 ± 13 MeV / c 2 with a width of 145 ± 8 ± 69 MeV / c 2 . If this 0 + + is interpreted as coming from f 0 ( 1710 ) , the ratio of its branching fractions to ππ and K K ¯ is 0.41 −0.17 +0.11 .

Abstract: Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

Abstract: Using the BES-II detector at the BEPC Collider, we measured the lowest order cross sections and the R values (R = sigma(0)(e+e--> hadrons)/sigma(0)(e+e-->mu+mu-)) for inclusive hadronic event production at the centre-of-mass energies of 3.650, 3.6648 and 3.773 GeV. The results lead to R-uds = 2.218 +/- 0.019 +/- 0.089 which is the average of these measured at 3.650 GeV and 3.6648 GeV, and R = 3.746 +/- 0.037 +/- 0.187 at root s = 3.773 GeV. We determined the lowest order cross section for psi (3770) production to be sigma(B)(psi)((3770)) = (9.323 +/- 0.253 +/- 0.801) nb at 3.773 GeV, the branching fractions for psi (3770) decays to be BF(psi (3770) -> D-0(D) over bar (0)) = (49.5 +/- 1.3 +/- 3.8)%, BF(psi (3770) -> D+D-) = (35.7 +/- 1.1 +/- 3.4)% and BF(psi (3770) -> D (D) over bar) = (85.5 +/- 1.7 +/- 5.8)%, which result in the total non-D (D) over bar branching fraction of psi(3770) decay to be BF(psi (3770) -> non-D (D) over bar) = (14.5 +/- 1.7 +/- 5.8)%. Abstract: Based on 58 million BESII J / ψ events, the K ¯ ∗ ( 892 ) 0 K + π − channel in K + K − π + π − is studied. A clear low mass enhancement in the invariant mass spectrum of K + π − is observed. The low mass enhancement does not come from background of other J / ψ decay channels, nor from phase space. Two independent partial wave analyses have been performed. Both analyses favor that the low mass enhancement is the κ , an iso-spinor scalar resonant state. The average mass and width of the κ in the two analyses are 878 ± 23 −55 +64 MeV / c 2 and 499 ± 52 −87 +55 MeV / c 2 , respectively, corresponding to a pole at ( 841 ± 30 −73 +81 ) − i ( 309 ± 45 −72 +48 ) MeV / c 2 .

Abstract: Using 14 million ψ ( 2 S ) events collected with the BESII detector, branching fractions of ψ ( 2 S ) → K ∗ ( 892 ) + K − + c.c. and K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 K ¯ 0 + c.c. are determined to be: B ( ψ ( 2 S ) → K ∗ ( 892 ) + K − + c.c. ) = ( 2.9 −1.7 +1.3 ± 0.4 ) × 10 −5 and B ( ψ ( 2 S ) → K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 K ¯ 0 + c.c. ) = ( 13.3 −2.7 +2.4 ± 1.7 ) × 10 −5 . The results confirm the violation of the “12% rule” for these two decay channels. A large isospin violation between the charged and neutral modes is observed.

Abstract: Based on a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events taken with the BESII detector, the branching fractions of J/psi -> 2(pi(+)pi(-))eta and J/psi -> 3(pi(+)pi(-))eta are measured for the first time to be (2.26 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.27) x 10(-3) and (7.24 +/- 0.96 +/- 1.11) x 10(-4), respectively. Abstract: The absolute branching fraction for the decay D + → μ + ν has been directly measured based on a data sample of about 33 pb −1 collected around s = 3.773 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider. A total of 5321 ± 149 ± 160 D − mesons are reconstructed in nine hadronic decay modes. In the system recoiling against these singly tagged D − mesons, 2.67 ± 1.74 purely leptonic decay events of D + → μ + ν μ are observed. Those yield the branching fraction of BF ( D + → μ + ν μ ) = ( 0.122 −0.053 +0.111 ± 0.010 ) % , and a corresponding value of the pseudoscalar decay constant f D + = ( 371 −119 +129 ± 25 ) MeV .

Abstract: The absolute branching fraction for the decay D + → K ¯ 0 e + ν e is determined using 5321 ± 149 ± 160 singly tagged D − event sample from the data collected around 3.773 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider. In the system recoiling against the singly tagged D − mesons, 34.4 ± 6.1 events for D + → K ¯ 0 e + ν e are observed. Those yield the absolute branching fraction to be BF ( D + → K ¯ 0 e + ν e ) = ( 8.95 ± 1.59 ± 0.67 ) % . The ratio of the two partial widths for the decays of D 0 → K − e + ν e and D + → K ¯ 0 e + ν e is determined to be Γ ( D 0 → K − e + ν e ) / Γ ( D + → K ¯ 0 e + ν e ) = 1.08 ± 0.22 ± 0.07 .

Abstract: Evidence of ψ ( 3770 ) decays to a non- D D ¯ final state is observed. A total of 11.8 ± 4.8 ± 1.3 ψ ( 3770 ) → J / ψ π + π − events are obtained from a data sample of 27.7 pb−1 taken at center-of-mass energies around 3.773 GeV using the BES-II detector at the BEPC. The branching fraction is determined to be BF ( ψ ( 3770 ) → J / ψ π + π − ) = ( 0.34 ± 0.14 ± 0.09 ) % , corresponding to the partial width of Γ ( ψ ( 3770 ) → J / ψ π + π − ) = ( 80 ± 33 ± 23 ) keV .

Abstract: The lepton flavor violation processes J / ψ → μ τ and eτ are searched for using a sample of 5.8 × 10 7 J / ψ events collected with the BESII detector. Zero and one candidate events, consistent with the estimated background, are observed in J / ψ → μ τ , τ → e ν ¯ e ν τ and J / ψ → e τ , τ → μ ν ¯ μ ν τ decays, respectively. Upper limits on the branching ratios are determined to be Br ( J / ψ → μ τ ) 2.0 × 10 − 6 and Br ( J / ψ → e τ ) 8.3 × 10 − 6 at the 90% confidence level (C.L.).

Abstract: The absolute branching fractions for the decays D 0 → K − e + ν e and D 0 → π − e + ν e are determined using 7584 ± 198 ± 341 singly tagged D ¯ 0 sample from the data collected around 3.773 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC. In the system recoiling against the singly tagged D ¯ 0 meson, 104.0 ± 10.9 events for D 0 → K − e + ν e and 9.0 ± 3.6 events for D 0 → π − e + ν e decays are observed. Those yield the absolute branching fractions to be BF ( D 0 → K − e + ν e ) = ( 3.82 ± 0.40 ± 0.27 ) % and BF ( D 0 → π − e + ν e ) = ( 0.33 ± 0.13 ± 0.03 ) % . The vector form factors are determined to be | f + K ( 0 ) | = 0.78 ± 0.04 ± 0.03 and | f + π ( 0 ) | = 0.73 ± 0.14 ± 0.06 . The ratio of the two form factors is measured to be | f + π ( 0 ) / f + K ( 0 ) | = 0.93 ± 0.19 ± 0.07 .

50. Determination of boundary conditions in extended thermodynamics via fluctuation theory

Abstract: A system of equations from extended thermodynamics is proposed for the calculation of the temperature field in a rarefied gas at rest. Numerical simulations suggest that the temperature field in this case should exhibit boundary layers superposed on the classical Fourier solution. In order to derive such a field from the extended thermodynamics of moments, one needs boundary values for higher moments, which in practice cannot be assigned and controlled. We suggest that such boundary data emerge as mean values of thermal fluctuations and thus calculate them. The result agrees qualitatively with numerical simulations and it is quantitatively of the same order of magnitude.
