Abstract

Using data from the FOCUS experiment we analyze the D+π− and D0π+ invariant mass distributions. We measure the D 2 ∗0 mass M D 2 ∗0 =(2464.5±1.1±1.9) MeV /c 2 and width Γ D 2 ∗0 =(38.7±5.3±2.9) MeV /c 2 , and the D 2 ∗+ mass M D 2 ∗+ =(2467.6±1.5±0.76) MeV /c 2 and width Γ D 2 ∗+ =(34.1±6.5±4.2) MeV /c 2 . We find evidence for broad structures over background in both the neutral and charged final state. If each is interpreted as evidence for a single L=1, jq=1/2 excited charm meson resonance, the masses and widths are M 1/2 0 =(2407±21±35) MeV /c 2 , Γ 1/2 0 =(240±55±59) MeV /c 2 , and M 1/2 + =(2403±14±35) MeV /c 2 , Γ 1/2 + =(283±24±34) MeV /c 2 , respectively.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D s + → φμ + ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic form factor ratios: r v and r 2 . We find r v =1.549±0.250±0.148 and r 2 =0.713±0.202±0.284. These values are consistent with r v and r 2 form factors measured for the process D + → K ∗0 l + ν l .

Abstract

We report measurements of the charm-anticharm production asymmetries for $\Lambda_c^+$, $\Sigma_c^{++}$, $\Sigma_c^0$, $\Sigma_c^{++*}$, $\Sigma_c^{0*}$, and $\Lambda_c^+(2625)$ baryons from the Fermilab photoproduction experiment FOCUS (E831). These asymmetries are integrated over the region where the spectrometer has good acceptance. In addition, we have obtained results for the photoproduction asymmetries of the $\Lambda_c$ baryons as functions of $p_L$, $p_T^2$, and $x_F$. The integrated asymmetry for $\Lambda_c^+$ production, $(\sigma_{\Lambda_c^+} - \sigma_{\Lambda_c^-}) / (\sigma_{\Lambda_c^+} + \sigma_{\Lambda_c^-})$, is $0.111 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.012$, significantly different from zero. The asymmetries of the excited states are consistent with the $\Lambda_c$ asymmetry., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Studies of $D{\bar D}$ correlations for a large sample of events containing fully and partially reconstructed pairs of charmed $D$ mesons recorded by the Fermilab photoproduction experiment FOCUS (FNAL-E831) are presented. Correlations between $D$ and ${\bar D}$ mesons are used to study heavy quark production dynamics. We present results for fully and partially reconstructed charm pairs and comparisons to a recent version of \textsc{Pythia} with default parameter settings. We also comment on the production of $\psi(3770)$ in our data., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The FOCUS experiment(FNAL-E831) has used two channels, $\Omega^- \pi^+$ and $\Xi^-K^- \pi^+ \pi^+$,to measure the lifetime of the $\Omega_c^0$ charmed baryon. From a sample of $64 \pm 14$ signal events at a mass of 2.698 GeV/$c^2$, we measure an $\Omega_c^0$ lifetime of $72 \pm 11$ (stat.) $\pm 11$ (sys.) fs, substantially improving upon the current world average.

Abstract

Using data collected by the Fermilab experiment FOCUS, we measure the lifetime of the charmed baryon (\Xi_{c}^{o}) using the decay channels (\Xi_{c}^{o}\to \Xi ^{-}\pi ^{+}) and (\Xi_{c}^{o}\to \Omega ^{-}K^{+}). From a combined sample of (110\pm 17) events we find (\tau (\Xi_{c}^{o}) =~118^{+ 14}_{- 12} \pm5) fs, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We have studied the Cabibbo suppressed decay (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}K^{*0}(892)) and the Cabibbo favored decays (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}K^{+}K^{-}), (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}\phi) and (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Xi ^{*0}(\Sigma^{+}K^{-})K^{+}) and measured their branching ratios relative to (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{+}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}) to be ((7.8\pm 1.8\pm 1.3)%), ((7.1\pm 1.1\pm 1.1)%), ((8.7\pm 1.6\pm 0.6)%) and ((2.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6)%), respectively. The first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report two 90% confidence level limits (\Gamma (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma ^{-}K^{+}\pi ^{+})/\Gamma (\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma^{+}K^{*0}(892))

Abstract

We report the observation of the Cabibbo suppressed decay \Xi_c^+ \to p K^-\pi^+ using data collected with the FOCUS spectrometer during the 1996--97 Fermilab fixed target run. We find a \Xi_c^+ signal peak of 202\pm35 events. We have measured the relative branching ratios BR(\Xi^+_c\to p K^-\pi^+)/BR(\Xi^+_c\to\Xi^-\pi^+\pi^+)= 0.234 \pm 0.047 \pm 0.022 and BR(\Xi^+_c\to p \bar{K}^*(892)^0)/BR(\Xi^+_c\to p K^-\pi^+)= 0.54 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.05 .

Abstract

FOCUS results from Dalitz plot analysis of D_s+ and D+ to pi+pi-pi+ are presented. The K-matrix formalism is applied to charm decays for the first time to fully exploit the already existing knowledge coming from the light-meson spectroscopy experiments. In particular all the measured dynamics of the S-wave pipi scattering, characterized by broad/overlapping resonances and large non-resonant background, can be properly included. This paper studies the extent to which the K-matrix approach is able to reproduce the observed Dalitz plot and thus help us to understand the underlying dynamics. The results are discussed, along with their possible implications on the controversial nature of the sigma meson., To be submitted to Phys.Lett.B A misprint corrected in formula 3

Abstract

We have performed a search for CPT violation in neutral charm meson oscillations. While flavor mixing in the charm sector is predicted to be small by the Standard Model, it is still possible to investigate CPT violation through a study of the proper time dependence of a CPT asymmetry in right-sign decay rates for $D^0\to K^-\pi^+$ and $\d0b\to K^+\pi^-$. This asymmetry is related to the CPT violating complex parameter $\xi$ and the mixing parameters $x$ and $y$: $A_{CPT}\propto{\rm Re} \xi y-{\rm Im} \xi x$ . Our 95% confidence level limit is $-0.0068, Comment: 12 pages 5 figures

Abstract

We study the decay of D0 and D+s mesons into five-body final states including a KS0 and report the discovery of the decay mode Ds+→KS0KS0π+π+π−. The branching ratio for the new mode is Γ(D s + →K S 0 K S 0 π + π − π + ) Γ(D s + →K S 0 K − π + π + ) =0.102±0.029±0.029 . We also determine the branching ratio of Γ(D 0 →K S 0 π + π + π − π − ) Γ(D 0 →K S 0 π + π − ) =0.095±0.005±0.007 as well as an upper limit for Γ(D 0 →K S 0 K − π + π + π − ) Γ(D 0 →K S 0 π + π + π − π − ) (90% CL). An analysis of the resonant substructure for D0→KS0π+π+π−π− is also performed.
