The high frequency B-dot (HFB) probe diagnostic on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak has undergone a considerable upgrade during the 2016 opening of the torus. The probe coverage is now greatly expanded toroidally, as well as radially with the addition of probes on the high field side and the removable manipulator head. A new 2-channel fast digitizer now allows to examine and record radio frequency (RF) wave emissions emanating from the plasma in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). Possible studies that can be achieved now include: a study of core ICRF power absorption efficiency; a study of ion cyclotron emissions from the plasma generated by energetic ions; and study of ICRF wave/plasma turbulence interactions in the scrape-off layer region.

The recent scientific research on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) has greatly advanced solutions to two issues of Radio Frequency (RF) heating in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF): (a) the coupling of ICRF power to the plasma is significantly improved by density tailoring with local gas puffing; (b) the release of RF-specific impurities is significantly reduced by minimizing the RF near field with 3-strap antennas. This paper summarizes the applied methods and reviews the associated achievements.

The modulation of the ion cyclotron fast wave coupling to the plasma due to non-axisymmetric changes of the distance antenna-R-cutoff is studied. These changes can arise when magnetic perturbation (MP) fields are used, or when MHD activity is present. The application of MP fields can excite a low field side midplane plasma kink response that amplifies the vacuum perturbation field, leading to appreciable 3D plasma displacements. This effect is studied via NEMEC simulations. Rigid rotation of the MP field is found to produce a coherent antenna loading resistance modulation, suggesting an interplay between the non-axisymmetric magnetic field structure and the wave coupling properties. MHD modes are shown to introduce similar loading resistance oscillations, coherent with the mode rotation frequency. The case of a (2,1) mode is presented.

Direct, non-intrusive, measurements of electric fields are essential for understanding the RF-sheath physics. This is especially true in the case of the ICRF antenna - plasma edge interaction in fusion devices. The rectification of the RF-fields near the plasma-facing components of an antenna leads to the development of DC electric fields that accelerate the ions from the plasma towards the antennas’ plasma-facing components, enhancing physical sputtering and release of impurities. IShTAR is a device dedicated to the investigation of the plasma - antenna interactions in tokamak edge-like conditions. It has a simplified geometry and enables an easy access and fast modifications, which makes it a suitable environment to develop diagnostics for electric field measurements. This paper presents the observed Stark effect on He I spectral line profile, with passive optical emission spectroscopy. To be able to fully control the operating parameters, at this initial stage, the measurements are conducted on a simple DC-biased electrode rather than the ICRF antenna. Measured line profiles are compared with the analytical models of the Stark effect in magnetised helium plasma that, as a result of the good fit, provide the electric field strength.

The physics of Radio-Frequency (RF) wave heating in the Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) in the core plasmas of fusion devices are relatively well understood while those in the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) remain still unresolved. This paper is dedicated to study the ICRF interactions with the plasma edge, mainly from the theoretical and numerical point of view, in particular with the 3D edge plasma fluid and neutral transport code EMC3-EIRENE and various wave codes. Here emphasis is given to the improvement of ICRF coupling with local gas puffing and to the ICRF induced density convection in the SOL.

In this paper we discuss improvements made to two codes for the simulation of ICRF waves in edge plasmas: SSWICH-SW, which self-consistently models the interplay between sheath physics and radiofrequency waves (the slow wave), and RAPLICASOL, a Finite Element solver for Maxwell's equations in the cold plasma approximation. We have extended both to be able to handle 3D plasma density profiles. A comparison between a 1D and a 3D simulation reveals that the density profile dimensionality has a relatively small effect on E|| at the aperture, but a large effect on the sheath potential at the antenna limiters

The response of the local RF current measured at limiters of 3-strap ICRF antenna to variations of power balance and phasing at fICRF=30MHz agrees qualitatively well with EM calculations by TOPICA and RAPLICASOL codes. Measurements of tungsten sputtering yield and DC current at the limiters correlate strongly with the local RF current. In contrast to findings for the 2-strap antennas, values of DC current are predominantly positive, and negative only for some locations and feeding parameters. Explanations can involve more physical mechanisms than only parallel sheath dynamics.

RF sheath physics is one of the key topics relevant for improvements of ICRF heating systems, which are present on nearly all modern magnetic fusion machines. This paper introduces developement and validation of a new approach to understanding general RF sheath physics. The presumed reason of enhanced plasma-antenna interactions, parallel electric field, is not measured directly, but proposed to be obtained from simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics® Modeling Software. Measurements of RF magnetic field components with B-dot probes are done on a linear device IShTAR (Ion cyclotron Sheath Test ARrangement) and then compared to simulations. Good resulting accordance is suggested to be the criterion for trustworthiness of parallel electric field estimation as a component of electromagnetic field in modeling. A comparison between simulation and experiment for one magnetic field component in vacuum has demonstrated a close match. An additional complication to this ICRF antenna field characterization study is imposed by the helicon antenna which is used as a plasma ignition tool in the test arrangement. The plasma case, in contrast to the vacuum case, must be approached carefully, since the overlapping of ICRF antenna and helicon antenna fields occurs. Distinguishing of the two fields is done by an analysis of correlation between measurements with both antennas together and with each one separately.

A sequence of simulations is performed with RAPLICASOL and SSWICH to compare two AUG ICRF antennas. RAPLICASOL outputs have been used as input to SSWICH-SW for the AUG ICRF antennas. Using parallel electric field maps and the scattering matrix produced by RAPLICASOL, SSWICH-SW, reduced to its asymptotic part, is able to produce a 2D radial/poloidal map of the DC plasma potential accounting for the antenna input settings (total power, power balance, phasing). Two models of antennas are compared: 2-strap antenna vs 3-strap antenna. The 2D DC potential structures are correlated to structures of the parallel electric field map for different phasing and power balance. The overall DC plasma potential on the 3-strap antenna is lower due to better global RF currents compensation. Spatial proximity between regions of high RF electric field and regions where high DC plasma potentials are observed is an important factor for sheath rectification.

IShTAR is a linear magnetized plasma test facility dedicated to the investigation of RF wave/plasma interaction. The IShTAR ICRF system consists of a single strap RF antenna. When using the antenna for plasma production without an external plasma source, it is shown that the plasma is either produced in front of the antenna strap or inside the antenna box depending on the antenna parameters. Here, we present experimental and numerical investigation of the plasma initiation parametric dependencies. Detailed pressure and RF power scans were performed in helium at f = 5.22 MHz and f = 42.06 MHz. The experiment shows the parameter ranges for which the plasma is produced in front of the strap, or inside the antenna box. These ranges are validated by simulations with the RFdinity model, and by theoretical predictions.

Central conductor is one of the key components of ion cyclotron ranges of heating antenna, which is usually formed by welding due to the complex structures. High level of welding seam quality and small deformation are very important to central conductor. Electron beam welding (EBW) is suggested as the central conductor welding. To meet EBW requirements and reduce the risk, complex and high level of the accuracy welding fixture have been designed for central conductor EBW. Some samples were manufactured to do test and examination for EBW qualification before central conductor welding. Based on the welding parameters, thermal analysis using finite element method for the welding seam have been carried out. One mockup of central conductor for EBW has been made for proving welding parameters. In addition, some postwelding process were employed after one central conductor EBW. Results of examination and inspection of one central conductor using EBW are presented in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
