During fission an atomic nucleus generally splits into two fission products and between two and three neutrons. These neutrons are extremely energetic having energies in the low MeV range. These neutrons lose energy through scattering collisions, and if they are not captured by a nucleus will eventually reach thermal equilibrium at energies of a fraction of an eV. It is found that light nuclei such as hydrogen and beryllium are the most effective at slowing-down neutrons. During this slowing-down process, the neutron population will take on a spectrum of energies which will depend upon other things, the amount of fissionable material, the probability of the neutrons being scattered as opposed to being absorbed, and so on.

The neutrons are important tool to study the condensed matter and they can also be used in nuclear physics. Hence in the present work, we have formulated an empirical formula for neutron absorption cross sections, coherent and incoherent neutron scattering cross sections and coherent neutron and incoherent scattering lengths for different mass number nuclei of wide atomic number range 1 Z 96 . This formula successfully produces experimental values 412 nuclei available in the literature.

A reference thermal neutron field has been established at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) by using a 241 Am-Be neutron source and a high-purity graphite pile constructed by stacking graphite blocks. The properties of the graphite blocks such as impurities, density, and dimensions were studied thoroughly to understand the characteristics of the generated field. The energy spectrum and thermal neutron fractions were simulated with the Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended code using measured physical parameters. The neutron effective temperature was 308 K, and the fraction of thermal neutrons was approximately 95% at the reference position of the thermal neutron field. The thermal neutron fluence rate was determined by adopting the Westcott convention method based on neutron activation analysis using a gold foil. The Westcott fluence rate for thermal neutron at the reference position was (2326.7 ± 8.4) cm −2 s −1 . The true thermal neutron fluence rate at the reference position in the KRISS thermal neutron field was (2700 ± 29) cm −2 s −1 (at the reference date of June 30, 2014). The response of a spherical proportional counter with He-3 (SP9 neutron detector) was evaluated in the newly established field as (3.083 ± 0.045) cm 2 for the reference calibration condition (a parallel neutron beam with a Maxwellian energy distribution having a most probable energy of 0.025 eV).

Scattering experiments performed with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Linear Accelerator measured elastic and inelastic scattering from an elemental iron sample. Eight liquid scintillator (EJ-301) proton recoil fast neutron detectors were positioned at several angles 0.5 m from the scattering sample. Data were measured using neutron time-of-flight in the energy range from 0.5 to 20 MeV, and pulse shape analysis was used to discriminate neutrons from gamma-rays. Nuclear data evaluations were compared to experimental data using Monte Carlo calculations. Below 2 MeV two new techniques were developed: a method which assessed inelastic-to-elastic scattering ratios and a method to determine the contribution from neutrons after only elastic scattering. These techniques, along with time-of-flight results, may help identify specific reactions that account for differences between evaluations and experimental data.

The Large Helical Device (LHD) plans to start deuterium experiments in March 2017. The expected performances of the neutron flux monitor and the vertical neutron camera have been investigated by neutron Monte Carlo simulations using the MCNP-6 Monte-Carlo neutronics code and the cross-section library FENDL-3.0. Three neutron flux monitors using 235 U fission chambers are located on the center axis of LHD and at two toroidal locations on the horizontal plane outside the cryostat. The detection efficiency for the neutron emission in the plasma has been evaluated. This is almost insensitive to the neutron source profile and the plasma position. The vertical neutron camera consists of 11 channels of stilbene detectors with a parallel collimator embedded in the concrete floor slab. The response function of the stilbene detector has been evaluated with PHITS code. Based on the response function, the count rate of the stilbene detector is estimated to be ∼6 × 10 4 cps for maximum neutron yield shots. Also, the spatial resolution is estimated to be 70 mm, which is smaller than the pitch of adjoining channels.

Results of experimental verification of results on neutron inelastic scattering cross section for iron obtained in measurements of spectra of neutrons undergoing inelastic scattering at incident neutron energies of 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 MeV and their calculations within the framework of statistical theory of nuclear reactions and direct interactions are presented. Description is given of the methodology of measurements and simulation calculations. Spectra of neutrons undergoing inelastic scattering obtained for iron in the process of experiments are analyzed in comparison with calculated data. New measurements of neutron inelastic scattering spectra and their analysis within the framework of contemporary modeling understanding allowed formulating proposal on introduction of corrections in the indigenous BROND-2.2 library of recommended evaluated neutron data and insignificant corrections in the most recent version of the library BROND-3.

Measuring source-dependent properties of free neutrons over a large neutron energy range, with hand-portable instrumentation, continues to push the frontier of neutron detection instrumentation design and analysis techniques. Building on prior work – C.B. Hoshor, et al., A portable and wide energy range semiconductor-based neutron spectrometer, Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A 803 (2015) 68–81 – which focused on demonstrating one-dimensional-based energy-dependent neutron measurement and analysis with a new class of solid-state moderating-type spectrometer, this work introduces two “core” algorithmic methodologies that expand the analysis of neutron thermalization measurements to three spatial dimensions to determine the location and identity of neutron radiation sources in real time. Two extensions of these core methodologies are then proposed to further improve both the accuracy and reliability of source location and identity determinations with this new class of hand-held instrumentation. In 432 preliminary simulation tests, these method extensions are shown to decrease the average source location error by 64% and provide correct identity determinations in all test cases.

The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) will accommodate 20 neutron beamlines at its first target station. These beamlines serve different purposes, and beamline 11 is designed to analyze the degraded models and damage mechanisms, such as Single Event Effects in electronic components and devices for aerospace electronic systems. This paper gives a preliminary discussion on the scheme of a high energy neutron irradiation experiment at the beamline 11 shutter based on the Monte Carlo simulation method. The neutron source term is generated by calculating the neutrons scattering into beamline 11 with a model that includes the target-moderator-reflector area. Then, the neutron spectrum at the sample position is obtained. The intensity of neutrons with energy of hundreds of MeV is approximately 1E8 neutron/cm 2 /s, which is useful for experiments. The displacement production rate and gas productions are calculated for common materials such as tungsten , tantalum and SS316. The results indicate that the experiment can provide irradiation dose rate ranges from 1E-5 to 1E-4 dpa per operating year. The residual radioactivity is also calculated for regular maintenance work. These results give the basic reference for the experimental design.

As part of the Energy & Transmutation project, we are developing a detector for neutrons with energies in the 10–100 MeV range emitted from the target irradiated by a charged-particle beam. The neutron is detected by measuring the time-of-flight and total kinetic energy of the forward-going recoil proton [1] knocked out at a small angle from a thin layer of plastic scintillator, which has to be selected against an intense background created by γ quanta, scattered neutrons, and charged particles. On the other hand, neutron energy has to be measured over the full range with no extra tuning of the detector operation regime. Initial measurements with a source of 14.1-MeV neutrons are reported.

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is an experimental technique to detect material structures in the nanometer to micrometer range. The solution of the structural model constructed from SANS strongly depends on the accuracy of the reduced data. The time-of-flight (TOF) SANS data are dependent on the wavelength of the pulsed neutron source. Therefore, data reduction must be handled very carefully to transform measured neutron events into neutron scattering intensity. In this study, reduction algorithms for TOF SANS data are developed and optimized using simulated data from a virtual neutron experiment. Each possible effect on the measured data is studied systematically, and suitable corrections are performed to obtain high-quality data. Adoptable beam of neutrons enables investigating neutron interaction with matter and extends its applications. Neutrons from a low energy Sb–Be source are accelerated to the desired energies by collision with high energy protons from a plasma focus device. Protons pass through a set of magnetic lenses and converged to a small point where the neutron source is located. Proton density is increased by narrowing the beam with a charge funnel. From a practical point of view, the source geometry of neutron is a half-cone, which enhances the number of forward peaked neutrons after collision with proton.

This paper presents the establishment and characterization of a neutron calibration field using a bare 252 Cf source of low neutron source strength in Vietnam. The characterization of the field in terms of neutron flux spectra and neutron ambient dose equivalent rates were performed by Monte Carlo simulations using the MCNP5 code. The anisotropy effect of the source was also investigated. The neutron ambient dose equivalent rates at three reference distances of 75, 125, and 150 cm from the source were calculated and compared with the measurements using the Aloka TPS-451C neutron survey meters. The discrepancy between the calculated and measured values is found to be about 10%. To separate the scattered and the direct components from the total neutron flux spectra, an in-house shadow cone of 10% borated polyethylene was used. The shielding efficiency of the shadow cone was estimated using the MCNP5 code. The results confirmed that the shielding efficiency of the shadow cone is acceptable.

Today facilities with collimated radiation field are widely used as reference in metrological support of devices for neutron radiation measurement. Neutron fields formed by radionuclide neutron sources. The aim of this research was to study characteristics of experimentally realized neutron fields geometries on АТ140 Neutron Calibration Facility using Monte Carlo method. For calibration, we put a device into neutron field with known flux density or ambient equivalent dose rate. We can form neutron beam from radionuclide fast-neutron source in different geometries. In containercollimator of АТ140 Neutron Calibration Facility we can install special inserts to gather fast-neutron geometry or thermal-neutron geometry. We need to consider neutron scattering from air and room’s walls. We can conduct measurements of neutron field characteristics in several points and get the other using Monte Carlo method. Thermal neutron collimator forms a beam from radionuclide source with a significant amount of neutrons with thermal energies. From found relationship between full neutron flux and distance to neutron source we see that inverse square law is violated. Scattered radiation contribution into total flux increases when we are moving away from neutron source and significantly influences neutron fields characteristics. While source is exposed in shadow-cone geometry neutron specter has pronounced thermal component from wall scattering. In this work, we examined main geometry types used to acquire reference neutron radiation using radionuclide sources. We developed Monte Carlo model for 238 Pu-Be neutron source and АТ140 Neutron Calibration Facility’s container-collimator. We have shown the most significant neutron energy distribution factor to be scattered radiation from room’s walls. It leads to significant changes of neutron radiation specter at a distance from the source. When planning location, and installing the facility we should consider radiation quality requirements.

The uniformity of the neutron intensity spatial distribution at the sample position will directly affect the neutron imaging quality. But the unexpected inhomogeneous spatial distribution phenomenon always appears in the neutron radiography facilities installed at the end of neutron guide. In this paper, the source of this phenomenon has been analyzed through geometrical optics and confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations, and several optimization solutions are also proposed.

J-PARC, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex provides short pulse proton beam at a repetition rate 25Hz and the maximum power is expected to be 1MW. Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments have already been operated or under construction/commissioning. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is developing a high-brightness, quasi-monoenergetic neutron source for fast neutron-based imaging. The intensity of the neutron source is expected to be 10 10∼11 n/s/sr with energies set at 7 MeV or 10 MeV with 5% bandwidth at 0-degrees. The neutrons are produced by the D(d,n) reaction using one of two accelerators of consisting of 1 or 2 RFQs (depending on the desired energy) and a DTL. Each accelerator will deliver approximately 100- or 300-uA (depending on the energy) average current deuteron beam onto a pulsed deuterium gas target or a solid target, depending on the application. In this paper, we discuss some of our benchmarking measurements and overall progress in preparation to be online in late 2017. We also discuss our performance expectations and broader set of applications.

The flux of secondary neutrons generated in collisions of the 660 MeV proton beam with the massive natural uranium spallation target was investigated using a set of monoisotopic threshold activation detectors. Sandwiches made of thin high-purity Al, Co, Au, and Bi metal foils were installed in different positions across the whole spallation target. The gamma-ray activity of products of (n,xn) and other studied reactions was measured offline with germanium semiconductor detectors. Reaction yields of radionuclides with half-life exceeding 100 min and with effective neutron energy thresholds between 3.6 MeV and 186 MeV provided us with information about the spectrum of spallation neutrons in this energy region and beyond. The experimental neutron flux was determined using the measured reaction yields and cross-sections calculated with the TALYS 1.8 nuclear reaction program and INCL4-ABLA event generator of MCNP6. Neutron spectra in the region of activation sandwiches were also modeled with the radiation transport code MCNPX 2.7. Neutron flux based on excitation functions from TALYS provides a reasonable description of the neutron spectrum inside the spallation target and is in good agreement with Monte-Carlo predictions. The experimental flux that uses INCL4 cross-sections rather underestimates the modeled spectrum in the whole region of interest, but the agreement within few standard deviations was reached as well. The paper summarizes basic principles of the method for determining the spectrum of high-energy neutrons without employing the spectral adjustment routines and points out to the need for model improvements and precise cross-section measurements.

Measurements to determine the absolute D-D and D-7Li neutron production rates with a neutron generator running at 100-200 kV acceleration potential were performed using the threshold activation foil technique. This technique provides a clear measure of fast neutron flux and with a suitable model, the neutron output. This approach requires little specialized equipment and is used to calibrate real-time neutron detectors and to verify neutron output. We discuss the activation foil measurement technique and describe its use in determining the relative contributions of D-D and D-7Li reactions to the total neutron yield and real-time detector response and compare to model predictions. The D-7Li reaction produces neutrons with a continuum of energies and a sharp peak around 13.5 MeV for measurement techniques outside of what D-D generators can perform. The ability to perform measurements with D-D neutrons alone, then add D-7Li neutrons for inelastic gamma production presents additional measurement modalities with the same neutron source without the use of tritium. Typically, D-T generators are employed for inelastic scattering applications but have a high regulatory burden from a radiological aspect (tritium inventory, liability concerns) and are export-controlled. D-D and D-7Li generators avoid these issues completely.

The equivalence between the neutron source and flux spectra is often implicitly used in practice although many times the users are not even aware of this. This work identifies two conditions under which the equivalence holds. Namely, if the neutron interaction between the source region and the volume where flux is observed is negligible, and the neutron mean track length in the observed volume does not depend on their energy, source and flux spectra are equivalent. Consequently, a flux determined on a closed surface from a full system calculation can be replaced by an equivalent source for a simplified model including only the region contained by the surface.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kentucky operates a 7-MV CN Van de Graaff accelerator that produces primary beams of protons, deuterons, and helium ions. An in-terminal pulsing and bunching system operates at 1.875 MHz and is capable of providing 1 ns beam bunches at an average current of several microamperes. Nearly all ongoing research programs involve secondary pulsed neutrons produced with gas cells containing deuterium or tritium, as well as with a variety of solid targets. Most experiments are performed at a target station positioned over a deep pit, so as to reduce the background created by backscattered neutrons. Recent experiments will be described; these include: measurements of n-p scattering total cross sections from En = 90 to 1800 keV to determine the n-p effective range parameter; the response of the plastic scintillator BC-418 below 1 MeV to low-energy recoil protons; n-p radiative capture cross sections important for our understanding of nucleosynthesis approximately 2 minutes after the occurrence of the Big Bang; γ-ray spectroscopy following inelastic neutron scattering to study nuclear structure relevant to double-β decay and to understand the role of phonon-coupled excitations in weakly deformed nuclei; and measurements of neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections for nuclei that are important for energy production and for our global understanding of the interaction of neutrons with matter.

For the design of ADS (Accelerator Driven System), it is important to study neutron spectra and details of nuclear reactions induced by neutrons. Furthermore, neutron energy and angular distribution data are important for a correct simulation of the propagation of particles inside a spallation target and the geometrical distribution of the outgoing neutron flux. Many experimental results are available for thin targets and massive targets additional studies of neutron spectra and neutron production were investigated to design target for ADS with incident proton energies up to 3 GeV. In our study, the angular distribution and the neutron energy spectra are reported for the (p,n) reaction on target nuclei such as Pb, U, W with energy from 50 MeV to 350 MeV calculated with database of JENDL-HE 2007. We obtain a set of data about the angular distribution and energy spectra of produced neutrons on some heavy targets with energy ranges as stated above. From the results of neutron spectra, the paper also gives many comments to recommend a choice of materials for target and energies for accelerating proton beam . From the angle distribution of neutrons generated in (p, n) reactions on the different targets with the different energies of proton, the solutions to arrange the reflection bars in reactor proposed. A comparison is also made to improve the reliability for calculation of the paper.

The sensitivity of the spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering technique based on magnetic fields that increase linearly with time is analyzed depending on the scattering geometry and the detector apperture. The application of sectoral collimators for the selection of scattering neutron trajectories is substantiated with the aim of improving the resolution and the corresponding effect on the data acquisition time is estimated.

The neutron inelastic scattering cross section of In 115 has been measured by the activation technique at neutron energies of 2.95, 3.94, and 5.24 MeV with the neutron capture cross sections of Au 197 as an internal standard. The effects of multiple scattering and flux attenuation were corrected using the Monte Carlo code GEANT4. Based on the experimental values, the In 115 neutron inelastic scattering cross sections data were theoretically calculated between the 1 and 15 MeV with the TALYS software code, the theoretical results of this study are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental results.

A thorough characterization of the key features of the new small-angle neutron scattering instrument SANS-1 at MLZ, a joint project of Technische Universitat Munchen and Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, is presented. Measurements of the neutron beam profile, divergency and flux are given for various positions along the instrument including the sample position, and agree well with Monte Carlo simulations of SANS-1 using the program McStas. Secondly, the polarization option of SANS-1 is characterized for a broad wavelength band. A key feature of SANS-1 is the large accessible Q-range facilitated by the sideways movement of the detector. Particular attention is hence paid to the effects that arise due to large scattering angles on the detector where a standard cos 3 solid angle correction is no longer applicable. Finally the performance of the instrument is characterized by a set of standard samples.

For nuclear data measurements with a white neutron source, to control the background at the detector is a key issue. The neutron dump which locates at the end of the white neutron beam line at CSNS has a very important impact to the neutron and gamma backgrounds in the endstation. A sophisticated neutron dump was designed to reduce the backgrounds to the level of about 10 −8 relative to the neutron flux. In this paper, the method to suppress both neutron and gamma backgrounds near a white-spectrum neutron dump is introduced. The optimized geometry structure and materials of the dump are described, and the neutron and gamma space distributions have been calculated by using the FLUKA code for different operation settings which are defined by beam spots of Φ30 mm, Φ60 mm and 90 mm×90 mm, respectively.

Extended Bonner Spheres spectrometer was used to measure the angular distribution of neutron spectral fluence around NYLON6 phantom irradiated with pencil beam of 100, 150 and 200 MeV protons at the Proton Therapy Center Praha. Measurements were supplemented by a calculation of neutron spectral fluences at different depths of the phantom. The calculation of neutron spectral fluence at different depth of the phantom demonstrated that the majority of high energy neutrons was generated at the beginning of the proton trajectory in the phantom and the neutron yield decreased with increasing depth, with a minimum at the depth corresponding to the Bragg peak. Therefore, attention should be paid not only to the tissue behind the irradiated volume, but also to the preceding tissue. However, the neutron spectral fluence in the vicinity of the treated tissue can only be determined by calculation, mainly due to the dimensions of the neutron spectroscopic instrumentation. This paper presents a suitable technique and experimental conditions to acquire reliable data necessary for the proper determination of neutron spectral fluence. From the measured spectral fluences, the neutron fluence in whole-range and partial energy intervals were determined together with the corresponding ambient dose equivalents at measurement positions. The obtained results indicate that high energy neutrons predominate at the direction of the proton beam and more neutrons are generated by higher energy protons.

Safeguarding nuclear material is an important and challenging task for the international community. One particular safeguards technique commonly used for uranium assay is active neutron correlation counting. This technique involves irradiating unused uranium with (α, n) neutrons from an Am–Li source and recording the resultant neutron pulse signal which includes induced fission neutrons. Although this non-destructive technique is widely employed in safeguards applications, the neutron energy spectra from an Am–Li sources is not well known. Several measurements over the past few decades have been made to characterize this spectrum; however, little work has been done comparing the measured and theoretical spectra of various Am–Li sources to each other. This paper examines fourteen different Am–Li spectra, focusing on how these spectra affect simulated neutron multiplicity results using the code Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX). Two measurement and simulation campaigns were completed using Active Well Coincidence Counter (AWCC) detectors and uranium standards of varying enrichment. The results of this work indicate that for standard AWCC measurements, the fourteen Am–Li spectra produce similar doubles and triples count rates. The singles count rates varied by as much as 20% between the different spectra, although they are usually not used in quantitative analysis, being dominated by scattering which is highly dependent on item placement.

The transportability of the spectrometer reduces the detector-related systematic bias between different neutron spectra and flux measurements, which allows for the comparison of measurements above or below ground. The spectrometer will measure neutron fluxes that are of prohibitively low intensity compared to the site-specific background rates targeted by other transportable fast neutron detection systems. To measure low intensity high-energy neutron fluxes, a conventional capture-gating technique is used for measuring neutron energies above 20 MeV and a novel multiplicity technique is used for measuring neutron energies above 100 MeV. The spectrometer is composed of two Gd containing plastic scintillator detectors arranged around a lead spallation target. To calibrate and characterize the position dependent response of the spectrometer, a Monte Carlo model was developed and used in conjunction with experimental data from gamma ray sources. Multiplicity event identification algorithms were developed and used with a Cf-252 neutron multiplicity source to validate the Monte Carlo model Gd concentration and secondary neutron capture efficiency. The validated Monte Carlo model was used to predict an effective area for the multiplicity and capture gating analyses. For incident neutron energies between 100 MeV and 1000 MeV with an isotropic angular distribution, the multiplicity analysis predicted an effective area of 500 cm2 rising to 5000 cm2. For neutron energies above 20 MeV, the capture-gating analysis predicted an effective area between 1800 cm2 and 2500 cm2. The multiplicity mode was found to be sensitive to the incident neutron angular distribution.

The Los Alamos Isotope Production Facility (IPF) creates medical isotopes using a proton beam impinged on a target stack. Spallation neutrons are created in the interaction of the beam with target. The use of these spallation neutrons to produce additional radionuclides has been proposed. However, the energy distribution and magnitude of the flux is not well understood. A modified SAND-II spectral adjustment routine has been used with radioactivation foils to determine the differential neutron fluence for these spallation neutrons during a standard IPF production run.

The National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia (BATAN) has one dedicated spectrometer for inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The instrument is a thermal neutron triple-axis spectrometer known as SN1. SN1 was installed in 1992 in the experimental hall of G. A. Siwabessy Research Reactor, Serpong, Banten. Malfunctions of the hardware and software have prevented the instrument from performing inelastic scattering measurements since 1996. The 2011-2015 five years project has been initiated to revitalize and optimize the SN1. The project serves as a preparation for the utilization of SN1 for the investigation of lattice dynamics, spin wave and magnetic excitations in condensed matters that will be started in 2016. In 2013, SN1 has successfully been repaired and was able to measure phonon dispersion relation of available single crystals, i.e ., Cu, pyrolytic graphite (PG), Ge, and Al. In 2015, the first experiment on magnetic excitation to investigate magnon dispersion relation of a known Fe single crystal has been carried out. Standard methods of inelastic scattering measurements, i.e ., a constant-energy transfer h ω with either fixed final neutron energy E f = 14.7 meV or fixed incoming neutron energy E i = 30.59 meV, and a constant momentum transfer Q with fixed incoming neutron energy E i = 30.59 meV, were applied to measure the low-energy magnetic excitations. For fixed E f measurement, a 5-cm thick PG filter was set between the sample and the analyzer to eliminate λ /n harmonics. To limit the energy and momentum spreads of the beam, collimations of 40 minutes were applied before and after the sample. The spin waves were measured along the three principal symmetry directions of [00ζ ], [ζζ 0], and [ζζζ ]. The measured magnons were compared to values in reference and were found to be in a good agreement with them. With such accomplishments, we are convinced that SN1 is now ready for its inelastic scattering application and will become one of BATAN’s neutron instrument which is routinely utilized for materials characterization on lattice dynamics and magnetic excitations by local and foreign scientists. Besides reporting the SN1 first measured magnon, the current status of SN1 instrument development will also be presented briefly. The work is devoted to measuring the angular distribution of 4.43-MeV γ-rays produced in inelastic scattering of 14.1-MeV neutrons by 12C nuclei. A portable ING-27 neutron generator (designed and fabricated at VNIIA, Moscow) with a built-in 64-pixel silicon α-detector was used as a source of tagged neutrons. The γ-rays of characteristic nuclear radiation from 12C were detected with a spectrometric system that consisted of 22 γ-detectors based on NaI(Tl) crystals arranged around the carbon target. The measured angular distribution of 4.43-MeV γ-rays is analyzed and compared with the results of other published experimental works.

New optimization criteria for a class of instruments, neutron reflectometers, are established by analysis of the reflectivity measurements. Luminosity of the reflectometer is defined as the neutron flux incident onto the sample surface on conditions that the measurement is made with a given momentum transfer resolution. The correct choice of the working wavelength and realization of measurements with optimum parameters of the neutron beam increase luminosity in several times. Standard schemes for the reflectivity measurements with monochromatic and white beams are considered. Optimization of the reflectivity measurements generally requires numerical calculations. Analytically, its potential is demonstrated by considering thermalized neutron beams. Such innovations as neutron-optical velocity selector, small-angle Soller collimators with traps for neutrons reflected from the channel walls and neutron fan beam time-of-flight technique are proposed to further increase the luminosity of reflectometers.

The neutron emission double-differential cross sections (DDX) of 9 Be was measured at an incident neutron energy of 21.65 MeV, using the multi-detector fast neutron time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer on HI-13 Tandem Accelerator at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The data were deduced by comparing the measured TOF spectra with the calculated ones using a realistic Monte-Carlo simulation. The DDX were normalized to n–p scattering cross sections which are a neutron scattering standard. The results of the elastic scattering angular distributions (DX) and the secondary neutron emission DDX at 25 different angles from 15 deg to 145 deg were presented. Meanwhile, a theoretical model based on the unified Hauser-Feshbach and exciton model for light nuclei was used to describe the double-differential cross sections of n+ 9 Be, and the theoretical calculation results were compared with the measured cross sections.

A specialized diffractometer intended for use in studying real-time transient processes in condensed media, which also allows the recording of Bragg diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering spectra, has been created at the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Frequently, only the given formulation of the experiment with the continuous recording of information on the process enables us to obtain data required for the correct interpretation of events. One of the crucial parameters of such experiments is the minimal time interval in which sufficient statistics can be acquired. The diffractometer parameters make it possible to measure diffraction and small-angle spectra within minute and even second (for certain types of transition processes) ranges. The possibilities of neutron scattering are discussed as applied to the study of transient processes, the diffractometer design is described, and its main characteristics and the test experiment results are presented.

International audience; After nearly 40 years of successful operation the cold three-axis spectrometer 1N12 at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France, has been relocated to a new position and the primary spectrometer has been upgraded. Latest modern optical components are employed. A new guide in combination with a virtual source concept and a double focusing monochromator guarantee highest flux. With its high unpolarized and polarized neutron flux 1N12 allows for demanding experiments. A velocity selector in the guide ensures a clean beam and a very low background. A gain in flux of about an order of magnitude at the sample position has been achieved compared to the previous instrument and 1N12's wavelength range now extends far into the warmish region. A new monochromatic beamline and facility has been installed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) devoted to neutron interferometry in the research areas of spin control, spin manipulation, quantum mechanics, quantum information science, spintronics, and material science. This facility is possible in part because of advances in decoherence free subspace interferometer designs that have demonstrated consistent contrast in the presence of vibrational noise; a major environmental constraint that has prevented neutron interferometry from being applied at other neutron facilities. Neutron interferometry measures the phase difference between a neutron wave function propagating along two spatially separated paths. It is a practical example of self interference and due to its modest path separation of a few centimeters allows the insertion of samples and macroscopic neutron spin rotators. Phase shifts can be caused by gravitational, magnetic and nuclear interactions as well as purely quantum mechanical effects making interferometer a robust tool in neutron research. This new facility is located in the guide hall of the NCNR upstream of the existing Neutron Interferometry and Optics Facility (NIOF) and has several advantages over the NIOF including higher incident flux, better neutron polarization, and increased accessibility. The long term goal for the new facility is to be a user supported beamline and makes neutron interferometer more generally available to the scientific community. This paper addresses both the capabilities and characteristics of the new facility.

A device for the excitation and detection of neutron magnetic-moment precession, consisting of a pair of magnetic mirrors placed in a magnetic field, is discussed. The device may be used as the phase-shifting element in a spin-echo neutron spectrometer, which measures the correlation time of the oscillations of a medium or the correlation length of its density. It is shown that in a magnetic field with an intensity of up to 1 kOe, the probability of neutron scattering can be measured from the minimum values of the wave vector of 10–7 A–1 and the transmitted energy of 1 peV.

The paper reports the results of an experiment on searching for the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM), performed on the ILL reactor (Grenoble, France). The double-chamber magnetic resonance spectrometer (Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI)) with prolonged holding of ultra cold neutrons has been used. Sources of possible systematic errors are analyzed, and their influence on the measurement results is estimated. The ways and prospects of increasing accuracy of the experiment are discussed.

Monoenergetic neutron response functions were measured for an EJ-299-33A plastic scintillator. The 7-MV Van de Graaff accelerator at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory was used to produce proton and deuteron beams for reactions with gaseous tritium and deuterium targets, yielding monoenergetic neutrons by means of the 3 H(p,n) 3 He , 2 H(d,n) 3 He , and 3 H(d,n) 4 He reactions. The neutron energy was selected by tuning the charged-particle’s energy and using the angular dependence of the neutron emission. The resulting response functions were measured for 0.1-MeV steps in neutron energy from 0.1 MeV to 8.2 MeV and from 12.2 MeV to 20.2 MeV. Experimental data were processed using a procedure for digital pulse-shape discrimination, which allowed characterization of the response functions of the plastic scintillator to neutrons only. The response functions are intended for use in neutron spectrum unfolding methods.

The Extreme Environment Diffractometer is a neutron time-of-flight instrument, designed to work with a constant-field hybrid magnet capable of reaching fields over 26 T, unprecedented in neutron science; however, the presence of the magnet imposes both spatial and technical limitations on the surrounding instrument components. In addition to the existing diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering modes, the instrument will operate also in an inelastic scattering mode, as a direct time-of-flight spectrometer. In this paper we present the Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations, the results of which illustrate the performance of the instrument in the inelastic-scattering mode. We describe the focussing neutron guide and the chopper system of the existing instrument and the planned design for the instrument upgrade. The neutron flux, neutron spatial distribution, divergence distribution and energy resolution are calculated for standard instrument configurations.

The spectra of leakage neutrons from a Pb83Li17 spherical shell with a 252Cf neutron source at its center have been measured by the time-of-flight method in a neutron energy range of 200 keV to 10 MeV. The outer radius of the spherical shell was 200 mm, and the inner radius was 60 mm. Measurements were performed with the use of a dedicated fast ionization chamber which simultaneously supplied stop pulses for the time-of-flight technique and recorded the total number of 252Cf decays for the experiment time. From the outer surface of the shell, the leakage neutrons were detected by a scintillation counter based on a paraterphenyl crystal with a diameter of 5 cm and a height of 5 cm and a FEU-143 photomultiplier tube. Earlier, spectra of leakage neutrons from the same spherical shell were measured with a 14 MeV neutron source using the same time-of-flight technique [1] . The results of the both measurements have been compared with the MCNP-4 Monte-Carlo code calculations with the ENDF/B-VII.1 and BROND-3 neutron data libraries.

RAON is a Korean heavy-ion accelerator complex that is planned to be built by 2021. Deuterons (53 MeV) and protons (88 MeV) accelerated by using a low-energy driver linac (SCL1) are delivered to the neutron production target in the Neutron Science Facility (NSF) to produce high-energy neutrons in the interval from 1 to 88 MeV with high fluxes of the order of 1012 n/cm2-sec. The repetition rate of the neutron beam ranges from 1 kHz to 1 MHz, and the maximum beam current is ~12 μA at 1 MHz. The beam width is 1 ~ 2 ns. The high-energy and high-rate fast neutrons are used to estimate accurate neutron-induced cross sections for various nuclides at the NSF. A MICROMEGAS (MICRO Mesh Gaseous Structure), which is a gaseous detector initially developed for tracking in high-rate, high-energy physics experiments, is tentatively being considered as a neutron beam monitor. It can be used to measure both the energy distribution and the flux of the neutron beam. In this study, a MICROMEGAS detector for installation at the NSF was designed and investigated. 6Li, 10B, 235U and 238U targets are being considered as neutron/charged particle converters. For the low-energy region, 6Li(n,α)t and 10B(n,α)7Li are used in the energy range from thermal to 1 MeV. 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) reactions are used for high-energy region up to 90 MeV. All calculations are performed by using the GEANT4 toolkit.

A Drabkin-type spin resonator was designed and successfully implemented at the multi-purpose beam line BOA at the spallation neutron source SINQ at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The device selectively acts on the magnetic moment of neutrons within an adjustable velocity band and hence can be utilized as a tunable neutron beam monochromator. Several neutron time-of-flight (TOF) spectra have been recorded employing various settings in order to characterize its performance. In a first test application the velocity dependent transmission of a beryllium filter was determined. In addition, we demonstrate that using an exponential current distribution in the spin resonator coil the side-maxima in the TOF spectra usually associated with a Drabkin setup can be strongly suppressed.

The recent expansion of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Center for Neutron Research facility has offered a rare opportunity to perform an accurate measurement of the cold neutron spectrum at the exit of a newly-installed neutron guide. Using a combination of a neutron time-of-flight measurement, a gold foil activation measurement, and Monte Carlo simulation of the neutron guide transmission, we obtain the most reliable experimental characterization of the Advanced Liquid Hydrogen Cold Neutron Source brightness to date. Time-of-flight measurements were performed at three distinct fuel burnup intervals, including one immediately following reactor startup. Prior to the latter measurement, the hydrogen was maintained in a liquefied state for an extended period in an attempt to observe an initial radiation-induced increase of the ortho (o)-hydrogen fraction. Since para (p)-hydrogen has a small scattering cross-section for neutron energies below 15 meV (neutron wavelengths greater than about 2.3 A), changes in the o- p hydrogen ratio and in the void distribution in the boiling hydrogen influence the spectral distribution. The nature of such changes is simulated with a continuous-energy, Monte Carlo radiation-transport code using 20 K o and p hydrogen scattering kernels and an estimated hydrogen density distribution derived from an analysis of localized heat loads. A comparison of the transport calculations with the mean brightness function resulting from the three measurements suggests an overall o- p ratio of about 17.5(±1) % o- 82.5% p for neutron energies

This article reports the design of a versatile multislit-based very small angle neutron scattering (VSANS) instrument working either as a dedicated instrument or as an add-on for any small-angle neutron scattering machine like the proposed SANS instrument, SKADI, at the future European Spallation Source. The use of multiple slits as a VSANS collimator for the time-of-flight techniques has been validated using McStas simulations. Various instrument configurations to achieve different minimum wavevector transfers in scattering experiments are proposed. The flexibility of the multislit VSANS instrument concept is demonstrated by showing the possibility of instrument length scaling for the first time, allowing access to varying minimum wavevector transfers with the same multislit setup. These options can provide smooth access to minimum wavevector transfers lower than ∼4 × 10−5 Å−1 and an overlapping of wavevector coverage with normal SANS mode, e.g. with the SKADI wavevector range of 10−3–1.1 Å−1. Such an angularly well defined and intense neutron beam will allow faster SANS studies of objects larger than 1 µm. Calculations have also been carried out for a radial collimator as an alternative to the multislit collimator setup. This extends the SANS Q range by an order of magnitude to 1 × 10−4 Å−1 with much simpler alignment. The multislit idea has been realized experimentally by building a prototype at Laboratoire Leon Brillouin, Saclay, with cross-talk-free geometry. Feasibility studies were carried out by making VSANS measurements with single- and multislit collimators, and the results are compared with multiple-pinhole geometry using classical SANS analysis tools.

This work describes preliminary investigation into the design of a compact, portable, variable energy neutron source. The proposed method uses elastic neutron scatter at specific angles to reduce the energy of deuterium–deuterium or deuterium–tritium (D–T) neutrons. The research focuses on D–T Monte Carlo simulations, both in idealized and more realistic scenarios. Systematic uncertainty of the method is also analyzed. The research showed promise, but highlighted the need for discrimination of multiply-scattered neutrons, either through a pulsed generator or associated particle imaging.

Measurements of neutron elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections from 23Na have been performed for sixteen incident neutron energies between 1.5 and 4.5 MeV. These measurements were complemented by γ-ray excitation functions using the ( n , n ′ γ ) reaction to include excited levels not resolved in the neutron detection measurements. The time-of-flight (TOF) technique was employed for background reduction in both neutron and γ-ray measurements and for energy determination in neutron detection measurements. Previous reaction model evaluations relied primarily on neutron total cross sections and four (n, n0) and (n, n1) angular distributions in the 5 to 9 MeV range. The inclusion of more inelastic channels and measurements at lower incident neutron energies provide additional information on direct couplings between elastic and inelastic scattering as a function of angular momentum transfer. Reaction model calculations examining collective direct-coupling and compound absorption components were performed.
