In nuclear reactors operating in nominal conditions, delayed neutrons (DN) drive the kinetic behavior of the neutron population. Predicting this behavior requires therefore the knowledge of the DN yield per fission, average lifetime, and kinetic of their emission, which is described by precursors groups abundances. Characterizing the uncertainties of these macroscopic data is essential, especially as they are used to design the safety margins of reactors. Even for major fissile isotopes such as 235U and 239Pu, discrepancies still appear between the main nuclear data library. In 2018, CEA launched the ALDEN project (Average Lifetime of DElayed Neutrons), gathering several laboratories (CEA/DES and DRF, CNRS/LPSC, LP2i and LPC Caen, ENSICAEN, and University of Caen). This collaboration aims at producing new precise DN macroscopic data for reactor applications. Three experimental campaigns were conducted in 2018, 2019 and 2021 on the thermal fission of 233U, 235U and 239Pu at Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble (France), giving high quality results. In February 2023, a new campaign was performed at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility in Braunschweig (Germany), focusing on the fast fission of 238U. In particular, the DN yield was measured for eight energies between 1.5 and 19 MeV. This paper presents the experimental setup, that was adapted to the new facility and neutron spectrum. The methodology of analysis is also detailed, and some preliminary delayed neutron decay curves are showed.

The study of nuclear fission yields has a major impact on the characterization and understanding of the fission process and is mandatory for reactor applications. In the framework of a collaboration between the CEA, the LPSC and the ILL, a program of actinide fission yield measurements has been ongoing for several years at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer. However, the measurement of very low fission yields in the symmetry region and the heavy wing of the distributions is difficult to achieve due to the strong contamination by other masses with much higher yields and requires the development of a new experimental setup. This paper will first present the results of a new absolute measurement of the 235U(nth,f) mass yields using an ionization chamber placed at the exit of the spectrometer. Although very well documented in the literature, these yields show uncertainties lying from 3% to 10% with large discrepancies between libraries and a lack of correlation matrices. New experimental data obtained at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer will be detailed, along with the measurement method and the production of the experimental covariance matrix. The second part will show the development of a Time of Flight (ToF) line in order to improve the background rejection in the mass yield measurements. In the symmetry region, the precision of the measurement is limited by the background estimation due to the charge exchanges with the residual gas of the separator. We plan to analyze the events using a triple coincidence (∆E x E) x ToF, whereas today only (∆E x E) selection is available. The new ToF line is built using Si3N4 foils and secondary electron detectors (SED) for the start and stop detectors. We will present the choices made for the SED technology along with the progress achieved on the ToF line characterization.

Background: Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammation of periodontal tissues. Several systemic diseases are related to this condition. One of the strongest associations is that of periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). On the contrary, the link with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has not been extensively investigated. The objective of the present report is to evaluate and compare the effect of two domiciliary oral hygiene protocols on the periodontal clinical status as well as on the metabolic control in patients affected by T1DM. Methods: Sample size calculation required 20 patients per group, therefore 40 patients were equally and randomly assigned to the following home oral care protocols: a probiotic-based one (trial group) and a natural extracts-based one (control group). At the beginning of the study, after 3 and 6 months, the following periodontal indexes were collected: Probing Pocket Depth (PPD), Plaque Index (PI), Clinical Attachment Level (CAL), Bleeding on Probing (BoP), and Glycosylated Hemoglobin (HbA1c). Data underwent statistical analysis (significance threshold: p < 0.05). Results: In both groups, significant decreases in the periodontal clinical indexes were found at various time frames, whereas the levels of HbA1c significantly decreased only in the control group. Conclusions: Both the domiciliary treatments administered can significantly improve PPD, PI, CAL, and BOP parameters, whereas only the natural extracts-based gel seems to decrease HbA1c levels of T1DM patients.

A complete-spectroscopy investigation of low-lying, low-spin states in the one-proton-hole and one-neutron-hole nucleus 206Tl has been performed by using thermal neutron capture and γ-coincidence technique with the FIPPS Ge array at ILL Grenoble. The new experimental results, together with data for the one-proton-particle and one-neutron-particle nucleus 210Bi (taken from a previous study done at ILL in the EXILL campaign), allowed for an extensive comparison with predictions of shell-model calculations performed with realistic interactions. No phenomenological adjustments were introduced in the calculations. In 210Bi, state energies, transition multipolarities and decay branchings agree well with theory for the three well separated multiplets of states which dominate the low-lying excitations. On the contrary, in 206Tl significant discrepancies are observed: in the same energy region, six multiplets were identified, with a significant mixing among them being predicted, as a consequence of the smaller energy separation between the active orbitals. The discrepancies in 206Tl are attributed to the larger uncertainties in the determination of the off-diagonal matrix elements of the realistic shell-model interaction with respect to the calculated diagonal matrix elements, the only ones playing a major role in the case of 210Bi. The work points to the need of more advanced approaches in the construction of the realistic interactions. Isomeric ratios are a powerful observable to investigate fission fragment total angular momenta. A recent experimental campaign achieved at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer, shows a kinetic energy dependence of μs isomeric ratios from fission fragments populated in neutron induced fission of 235U. For the first time, this dependence was measured for the isomeric ratio of the doubly magic 132Sn. A Bayesian assessment of the angular momentum distribution of 132Sn is proposed according to calculations performed with the FIFRELIN code and interpreted with spin generation models. In the normal operation of nuclear reactors, the kinetic behavior of the neutron population in the core is driven by the so-called delayed neutrons (DN). The DN yield per fission, their average lifetime and their groups’ abundances are the main physical parameters used to predict the kinetic behavior of the reactor and its reactivity. The overall uncertainty associated to reactivity predictions, which is linked directly to the nuclear reactor safety margins, is thus closely dependent on a few parameters associated with DN. Depending on the nuclear data library, DN kinetic parameters present significant discrepancies, even for major fissile isotopes such as 235U or 239Pu. In this context, CEA has long been working for improving DN nuclear data. In 2018, CEA launched the ALDEN project (Average Lifetime of DElayed Neutrons) in the framework of a collaboration between CEA/DES, CEA/DRF, CNRS/IN2P3 (LPSC, CENBG, LPC), ENSICAEN and Caen University. This program aims at measuring the kinetics of the delayed neutrons to derive the DN yield, their average lifetime and abundances. Two experimental campaigns focusing on the thermal fission of 235U were conducted in 2018 and 2019. They demonstrated the concept feasibility and gave high quality estimations of the DN multiplicity (1.631 ± 0.014 %) and average lifetime (8.82 ± 0.6 s) for 235U. More recently in March 2021, a more ambitious irradiation campaign was conducted on 239Pu and 233U. This paper details the new experimental setup, which was upgraded to meet ILL safety requirements for handling plutonium. The data analysis process is presented, with a focus on the problem of dead time correction. Finally, some preliminary delayed neutron decay curves are showed and discussed.

The γ-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between γ-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 μs isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

Recently, by using deep learning methods, a computer is able to surpass or come close to matching human performance on image analysis and recognition. This advanced methods could also help extracting features from neutron scattering experimental data. Those data contain rich scientific information about structure and dynamics of materials under investigation. Deep learning could help researchers better understand the link between experimental data and materials properties. Moreover,it could also help to optimize neutron scattering experiment by predicting the best possible instrument configuration. Among all possible experimental methods, we begin our study on the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data and by predicting the structure geometry of the sample material at an early stage. This step is a keystone to predict the experimental parameters to properly setup the instrument as well as the best measurement strategy. In this paper, we propose to use transfer learning to retrain a convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based pre rained model to adapt the scattering images classification, which could predict the structure of the materials at an early stage in the SANS experiment. This deep neural network is trained and validated on simulated database, and tested on real scattering images.

Nuclear fission yields are key data for reactor studies, such as spent fuel inventory or decay heat, and for understanding fission process. Despite a significant effort allocated to measure fission yields during the last decades, the recent evaluated libraries still need improvements in particular in the reduction of the uncertainties. Moreover, some discrepancies between these libraries must be explained. Additional measurements provide complementary information and estimations of experimental correlations, and new kinds of measurements enable to test the models used during the nuclear data evaluation process. A common effort by the CEA, the LPSC and the ILL aims at tackling these issues by providing precise measurements of isotopic and isobaric fission yields with the related variance-covariance matrices. Additionally, the experimental program involves a large range of observables requested by the evaluations, such as kinetic energy dependency of isotopic yields and odd-even effect in order to test the sharing of total excitation energy and the spin generation mechanism. Another example is the complete range of isotopic distribution per mass that allows the determination of the charge polarization, which has to be consistent for complementary masses (pre-neutron emission). For instance, this information is the key observable for the evaluation of isotopic yields. Finally, ionic charge distributions are indirect measurements of nanosecond isomeric ratios as a probe of the nuclear de-excitation path in the (E*, J, π) representation. Measurements for thermal neutron induced fission of 241 Pu have been carried out at the ILL in Grenoble, using the LOHENGRIN mass spectrometer. Methods, results and comparison to models calculations will be presented corresponding to a status on fission fragments observables reachable with this facility.

Delayed-neutron (DN) data is essential in inherent reactor safety and reactor control since it is needed for the estimation of the reactivity. Nowadays, discrepancies among the data in various international databases (JEFF, ENDF, JENDL) are large and bring excessive conservatism in the safety margins. The ALDEN (Average Lifetime of DElayed Neutrons) experiment, built in a collaboration between CEA and CNRS, aimed at re-measuring the DN data associated with several fissioning systems (average delayed-neutron yield and kinetic parameters). The first experimental campaign consisted in the integral measurement of the DN activity after the irradiation of an 235U target. It took place under the cold neutron flux of ILL (Institut Laue-Langevin) at the beginning of September 2018, in the PF1b experimental zone (doi:10.1016/j.nima.2006.03.020). The data analysis gave an average DN yield of 1.631E-02(2) DN/fiss and a mean precursors’ half-life of 8.93(9) s. The results are consistent with the literature, but they are affected by one third of the uncertainty.

The CEA in collaboration with ILL and LPSC has developed a measurement program on symmetric and heavy mass fission product distributions. The combination of measurements with ionisation chamber and Ge detectors is necessary to describe precisely the heavy fission product region in mass and charge. Recently, new measurements of fission yields and kinetic energy distributions, for different fissioning systems (233,235 U(nth, f),241 Am(2nth, f) and 239,241 Pu(nth, f), were performed with recoil spectrometer LOHENGRIN. The focus has been done on the self-normalization of the data to provide new absolute measurements, independently of any libraries along with the experimental covariance matrix. To reach precise measurements, a new experimental procedure was developed along with a new analysis method.

Nevertheless, the experimental program represents itself a large range of observables requested by the evaluations: isotopic yields, nuclear charge polarization, odd-even effect, isomeric ratio and their dependency with fission fragment kinetic energy as a probe of the nuclear de-excitation path in the (E*, Jπ) representation. Measurements for thermal neutron induced fission of 241Pu have been carried out at the Institut Laue Langevin using the LOHENGRIN mass spectrometer. Experimental program, observables reachable, results and comparison to model calculations are shown.

Neste trabalho relatam-se os resultados de uma investigação sobre a aplicação de pequenas experiências de cátedra, realizadas durante aulas teóricas na área da óptica. O objetivo da investigação foi o de avaliar a possibilidade de inclusão dessas pequenas experiências no currículo da disciplina, o seu valor, considerando a existência de aulas de laboratório didático, o valor de utilizar tempo alocado para essas experiências, e o valor dessas experiências relacionado à melhoria do processo de aprendizagem dos alunos. A relação entre ensino teórico e experimentação nas áreas da Física foi considerada, concluindo que existe uma forte ligação intelectual entre as duas fases, e que nem sempre estas são realizadas em uníssono temporal ou sequencialmente. O resultado dessa primeira fase foi a necessidade de um apoio integrado e experimental durante o ensino da teoria. Dessa forma, os alunos compreendem a teoria de forma mais fácil e também a estrutura da aula resulta mais agradável. Na segunda fase do inquérito, as reações dos alunos foram observadas durante a aplicação dos experimentos nas aulas. Também foi avaliado o desempenho dos alunos na resolução de exercícios e desenvolvimento de uma compreensão dos fenômenos físicos descritos nos experimentos. A investigação foi completada com a aplicação de um questionário referente ao nível de satisfação dos estudantes, o efeito das experiências na compreensão dos tópicos e sugestões de melhoria dos experimentos. Em geral, os alunos responderam com entusiasmo à aplicação dos experimentos e indicaram uma melhora do seu processo de aprendizagem, o que ficou comprovado na resolução de exercícios e compreensão da teoria, através da melhoria das notas dos alunos nas turmas nas quais as experiências foram aplicadas.

Lifetimes of excited states of the 98;100;102Zr nuclei were measured by using the Generalized Centroid Difference Method. The nuclei of interest were populated via neutron-induced fission of 241Pu and 235U during the EXILL-FATIMA campaign. The obtained lifetimes were used to calculate the B(E2) transition strengths and β deformation parameters which were then compared with the recent theoretical predictions obtained with Monte Carlo Shell Model.

Radiative capture reactions on rare targets and prompt spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei produced in the neutron-capture induced-fission of 235U and 241Pu have been performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). The high efficiency germanium (Ge) EXOGAM array has been used, complemented with Ge detectors from GASP and the ILL. LaBr3 detectors from the FATIMA collaboration have also been coupled to EXOGAM to measure lifetimes of lowlying excited states. The measured characteristics indicate very good performances of the overall setup. Some recent results will be discussed.

FIPPS is the new nuclear physics instrument of ILL for the spectroscopy of nuclei produced in neutron-induced reactions. The performance of the first implementation of the setup will be shown, together with an overview of the first experimental campaign (December 2016-March 2017). Future perspectives and physics opportunities will then be discussed.

At the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, germanium-gated γ-γ fast-timing lifetime measurements of nuclear excited states in neutron-rich nuclei have been performed within a prompt γ-ray spectroscopy experimental campaign. We report on results obtained from the cold-neutron induced fission of 235U. The excited secondary fission products were stopped almost instantaneously within the thick target and the γ rays emitted were collected triggerlessly using the EXILL&FATIMA mixed array of HPGe and LaBr3(Ce) detectors. Precise lifetimes could be determined by analysing the γ-γ time difference spectra using the generalized centroid difference method. This picosecondsensitive method provides many advantages and is briefly explained. Still, the major source of systematic errors is related to the contribution of time-correlated Compton background. The EXILL&FATIMA results are discussed with respect to the typical energy-dependent timing behaviour of the background. According to the time response of the background, appropriate methods and a time correction for the sub-nanosecond regime are proposed.

It is possible to detect individual flashes from thermal neutron impacts in a ZnS scintillator using a CMOS camera looking at the scintillator screen, and off line image processing. Some preliminary results indicated that the efficiency of recognition could be improved by optimizing the light collection and the image processing. We will report on this ongoing work which is a result from the collaboration between ESS Bilbao and the ILL. The main progress to be reported is situated on the level of the on-line treatment of the imaging data. If this technology is to work on a genuine scientific instrument, it is necessary that all the processing happens on line, to avoid the accumulation of large amounts of image data to be analyzed off line. An FPGA-based real-time full-deca mode VME-compatible CameraLink board has been developed at the SCI of the ILL, which is able to manage the data flow from the camera and convert it in a reasonable “neutron impact” data flow like from a usual neutron counting detector. The main challenge of the endeavor is the optical light collection from the scintillator. While the light yield of a ZnS scintillator is a priori rather important, the amount of light collected with a photographic objective is small. Different scintillators and different light collection techniques have been experimented with and results will be shown for different setups improving upon the light recuperation on the camera sensor. Improvements on the algorithm side will also be presented. The algorithms have to be at the same time efficient in their recognition of neutron signals, in their rejection of noise signals (internal and external to the camera) but also have to be simple enough to be easily implemented in the FPGA. The path from the idea of detecting individual neutron impacts with a CMOS camera to a practical working instrument detector is challenging, and in this paper we will give an overview of the part of the road that has already been walked.

The γ-coincidence studies of low-spin structures of 210Bi and 206Tl are presented. The 210Bi nucleus, populated in thermal neutron capture reaction, was investigated using EXILL HPGe array at Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. The experimental results were compared to the shell-model calculations allowing to draw the conclusions on the nature of the low-spin excitations populated below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi (4.6 MeV). It has been found that some levels cannot be described by the valence proton and neutron couplings, but may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3- octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core. Moreover, preliminary results of a low-spin structure measurements of 206Tl by the γ-coincidence technique, making use of the 205Tl(n,γ)206Tl reaction at the FIPPS prompt γ-ray spectroscopy facility of ILL are shown. The population of a large number of excited states of 206Tl above the ground state up to the neutron binding energy (at 6.5 MeV), within a few units of spin is expected. The analysis involving double and triple γ-coincidences and γγ-angular correlations will allow to significantly extend the experimental information on the energy and spin-parity of the levels in 206Tl. This will help shedding light on the proton-hole and neutron-hole couplings near the doubly magic core 208Pb.

Nuclei in the neutron-rich region beyond 132Sn have been produced recently by various experiments using fission. Using isomer and β-decay studies nuclear structure data has been collected on the orbital evolution and collectivity in the region with both the increase of proton and neutron numbers. Examples on particular questions related to the g.s. of the A=136 odd-odd 136Sb nucleus and its heavier neighbours are given in the scope of expectations by shell-model theory.

Recent results on the structure of 47Ca will be presented. The nucleus of interest was populated via the cold-neutron capture 46Ca(n,γ) reaction, on a rare 46Ca target, during the EXILL experimental campaign at the nuclear reactor of Institut Laue- Langevin in Grenoble. High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy, performed with a composite array of HPGe detectors, enabled the identification of new transitions deexciting states between the neutron-capture level and the ground state. Experimental data will be compared with a novel microscopic theoretical model, currently under development, specifically designed to describe the low-lying structure of odd-mass nuclei with one valence particle/hole outside a spherical doubly-magic core, using the Skyrme effective interaction self-consistently.

The γ decays of excited states in the very neutron-rich nucleus 88Se have been observed following the cold neutron-induced fission of 235U at the PF1B facility of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble. The EXILL array was used to measure γ - γ - γ coincidences, which were then analysed to build a level scheme of 88Se. A low (2+1) energy hints at the onset of quadrupole deformation and the identification of possible members of a (2+2) band provide evidence for γ vibrations. Shell-model calculations using a 78Ni core reproduce the experimental decay scheme well, implying that interactions between particles in the π f5/2 p and vsd orbits are responsible for much of the collectivity present. The algebraic collective model has also been used to interpret the experimental data, showing that that the experimental spectrum is consistent with 88Se being a transitional nucleus, possessing weak static β deformation and γ instability.

Fission yields are essential for nuclear reactor studies (decay heat, fuel inventory…) and constitute also one of the main observables needed to improve our understanding of the fission process. The symmetric mass region is of particular interest due to various intriguing properties of the fission fragments already reported in the literature : inversion of the nuclear charge polarization, large width of the fission fragment kinetic energy distribution, strong change of the prompt neutron multiplicity, etc. Recently, measurements of fission yields and kinetic energy distributions in the symmetric mass region were achieved at the LOHENGRIN mass spectrometer of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). This experimental work is challenging due to the low counting rate and the appearance of contaminant masses, leading to pronounced components in the fission fragment kinetic energy distribution. Despite removing the undesirable contributions, the fission fragment kinetic energy distributions still show two components, indicating that the fission process could be modal. To go further and better characterize these components a comparison between our experimental data and Monte Carlo calculations (FIFRELIN code) simulating the de-excitation of the fission fragments for different fission channels will be presented and discussed.

A large array of Ge detectors installed at ILL, around a 235U target irradiated with cold neutrons, (EXILL) allowed measurement of prompt gamma-ray cascades occurring in fission fragments with an unambiguous determination of fragments. Here we present preliminary results of a systematic comparison between experimental γ-ray intensities and those obtained from the Monte-Carlo simulation code FIFRELIN, which is dedicated to the de-excitation of fission fragments. Major γ-ray intensities in the 142Ba and 92Kr fission products, extracted from EXILL data, were compared to FIFRELIN, as well as to reported values (when available) obtained with EUROGAM2 in the spontaneous fission of 248Cm. The evolution of γ-ray intensities in 92Kr versus the complementary partner in fission (i.e. versus the total number of evaporated neutrons by the fission pair) was then extracted and compared to FIFRELIN.

The LPSC in collaboration with ILL and CEA has developed a measurement program on symmetric and heavy mass fission fragment distributions. The combination of measurements with ionisation chamber and Ge detectors is necessary to describe precisely the heavy fission fragment region in mass and charge. Recently, new measurements of fission yields and kinetic energy distributions are has been made on the 233U(nth,f) reaction. The focus of this work has been on the new optical and statistical methodology and the self-normalization of the data to provide new absolute measurements, independently of any libraries, and the associated experimental covariance matrix.

The mixing ratio of the main 320-keV, M1 + E2 ground-state γ transition in 210Bi has been more precisely quantified, allowing a significant reduction in the uncertainty of measurements of the neutron-capture cross section to the ground state of 210Bi from 25% to 0.9%. Accurate values for neutron-capture cross sections to both the ground and long-lived 9− isomeric state at 271 keV in 210Bi are of particular importance as Pb-Bi finds increased usage in Accelerator Driven Systems.

The study of fission yields has a major impact on the characterization and understanding of the fission process and is mandatory for reactor applications. The LPSC in collaboration with ILL and CEA has developed a measurement program on fission fragment distributions at the Lohengrin spectrometer of the ILL, with a special focus on the masses constituting the heavy peak. We will present in this paper our measurement of the very low fission yields in the symmetry mass region and the heavy mass wing of the distribution for 233U thermal neutron induced fission. The difficulty due to the strong contamination by other masses with much higher yields will be addressed in the form of a new analysis method featuring the required contaminant correction. The apparition of structures in the kinetic energy distributions and possible interpretations will be discussed, such as a possible evidence of fission modes.

The modelling of γ heating and neutron damage inside a nuclear reactor is essential to design the next generation of nuclear reactors. The determination of the fission fragment momentum is a key element to perform accurate calculations of the γ heating. One way to assess this information is to look at the isomeric ratio of different nuclei. According to the lifetime of the isomeric state, different experimental techniques were developed at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer. A focus on the measurement of isomeric ratios of 136I in neutron induced fission of 241Pu is presented. A discussion with the current assumptions used in the evaluation process for isomeric ratio is also shown.

A novel method for direct electronic “fast-timing” lifetime measurements of nuclear excited states via γ-γ coincidences using an array equipped with N very fast high-resolution LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detectors is presented. The generalized centroid difference method provides two independent “start” and “stop” time spectra obtained without any correction by a superposition of the N(N – 1)/2 calibrated γ-γ time difference spectra of the N detector fast-timing system. The two fast-timing array time spectra correspond to a forward and reverse gating of a specific γ-γ cascade and the centroid difference as the time shift between the centroids of the two time spectra provides a picosecond-sensitive mirror-symmetric observable of the set-up. The energydependent mean prompt response difference between the start and stop events is calibrated and used as a single correction for lifetime determination. These combined fast-timing array mean γ-γ zero-time responses can be determined for 40 keV < Eγ < 1.4 MeV with a precision better than 10 ps using a 152Eu γ-ray source. The new method is described with examples of (n,γ) and (n,f,γ) experiments performed at the intense cold-neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, using 16 LaBr3(Ce) detectors within the EXILL&FATIMA campaign in 2013. The results are discussed with respect to possible systematic errors induced by background contributions.

The feasibility of retrieving accurate fission observables with a Ge-detector array around a fissile target placed in a cold neutron beam was tested. In three measurement campaigns performed at ILL with the EXILL setup, 235U and 241Pu targets were placed in the high flux cold neutron beam available at the PF1B neutron guide. Gamma-rays following fission were detected by an array of 16 Ge detectors. In the following study, part of data was analyzed as a proof of principle. A set of yields belonging to the Kr-Ba pair were extracted using a gamma-gamma coincidence technique. Preliminary results were compared to the predictions of two phenomenological models: GEF and FIFRELIN.

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,γ) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method. We report on the properties of the set-ups and present first results from both campaigns.

Measurement of γ radiation following slow neutron capture on 68Zn and 70Zn using very efficient germanium array EXILL was done at Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. New spectroscopic information for 69Zn (including doorway state) and first results for 71Zn (accurate energy of β decaying isomer) were obtained. Binding energies for 68Zn, 69Zn and 71Zn were determined with 5-to-70 times higher accuracy than presented in the literature.

The neutron capture reaction at 77Se has been studied with cold neutrons in the course of the EXILL campaign at the high-flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin Grenoble. A simulation of the detector array with Geant4 has been accomplished and evaluated. The detector response has been deduced and measured spectra were unfolded, which have been compared with simulations using γDex to determine strength functions.

Within the EXILL campaign a large and efficient cluster of Ge-detectors was installed around a very well collimated neutron beam. This has allowed to carry out rather complete spectroscopic studies close to the line of stability using the (n,γ) reaction. Neutron rich isotopes were produced by neutron induced fission and prompt spectroscopy was carried out. The isotope selection in this setup was based on a partially known level scheme and the use of triple coincidences. The latter is limiting the statistical sensitivity in the case of weak production yields. Based on the experiences of these campaigns we are currently developing a new setup: FIPPS (FIssion Product Prompt Spectroscopy). This setup combines a collimated neutron beam, a highly efficient cluster of Ge detectors, a gas filled magnet and auxiliary detectors. The presence of the gas filled magnet will allow us to identify fission products directly and should give access to a new quality of studies if compared to the EXILL campaign. The EXILL campaign and the FIPPS project are presented.

A combination of germanium detectors has been installed at the PF1B neutron guide of the ILL to perform the prompt spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei produced in the neutron-capture induced-fission of 235U and 241Pu. In addition LaBr3 detectors from the FATIMA collaboration have been installed in complement with the EXOGAM clovers to measure lifetimes of low-lying excited states. The measured characteristics and online spectra indicate very good performances of the overall setup.

A cold neutron induced fission experiment recently took place at the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble. The neutron beam was provided by the nuclear reactor facility at ILL and the detector setup that was used for the γ-spectroscopy of the fission products consisted mainly of the detectors of the EXOGAM array [1], thereby the name of the campaign is EXILL. The main purpose of our measurement was to investigate the nuclei in the region with N = 50 close to 78Ni as well as the nuclei close to the N = 82 shell closure. In this paper, the motivation of the experiment is described as well as the experimental setup and the status of the ongoing data analysis.

One way to explore exotic nuclei is to study their structure by performing γ-ray spectroscopy. At the ILL, we exploit a high neutron flux reactor to induce the cold fission of actinide targets. In this process, fission products that cannot be accessed using standard spontaneous fission sources are produced with a yield allowing their detailed study using high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy. This is what was pursued at the ILL with the EXILL (for EXOGAM at the ILL) campaign. In the present work, the EXILL setup and performance will be presented.

The variation in the elastic constant of GaAs during amorphization is investigated by line-focus beam acoustic microscopy. The amorphization occurs due to the implantation of Si ions at liquid-nitrogen temperature. Rutherford backscattering and channeling reveal the distribution of various types of amorphous materials in the GaAs.
