Abstract

A Set of new MPGD-based Photon Detectors is being built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The detectors cover a total active area of 1.4 m2 and are based on a hybrid architecture consisting of two THGEM layers and a Micromegas. A CsI film on one THGEM acts as a reflective photocathode. The characteristics of the detector, the production of the components and their validation tests are described in detail.

Abstract

Particle IDentification (PID) is a central requirement of the experiments at the future EIC. Hadron PID at high momenta by RICH techniques requires the use of low density gaseous radiators, where the challenge is the limited length of the radiator region available at a collider experiment. By selecting a photon wavelength range in the far UV domain, around 120 nm, the number of detectable photons can be increased. Ideal sensors are gaseous Photon Detectors (PD) with CsI photocathode, where the status of the art is represented by the MPGD-based PDs at COMPASS RICH. Detector optimization is required for the application at EIC. Here we report about a dedicated prototype where the sensor pad-size has been reduced to preserve the angular resolution. Abstract

Experiments at the future Electron Ion Collider require excellent hadron identification in a broad momentum range, in harsh conditions. A RICH capable to fulfill the PID requirements of the EIC could use MPGD-based photon detectors with solid photocathodes for covering large surfaces at affordable cost, providing good effciency, high resolution and compatibility with magnetic field. Photon detectors realized by coupling THGEMs and Micromegas have been successfully operated at the RICH-1 detector of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN since 2016. A similar technology could be envisaged for an EIC RICH, provided a large improvement in the photon position resolution is achieved. An R&D effort in this direction is ongoing at INFN Trieste. Few prototypes with smaller pixel size (down to 3 mm x 3 mm) have been built and tested in the laboratory with X-Ray and UV LED light sources. A modular mini-pad detector prototype has also been tested at the CERN SPS H4 beamline. New data acquisition and analysis software called Raven DAQ and Raven Decoder have been developed and used with the APV-25 based Scalable Readout System (SRS), for the modular mini-pad prototype tests. The main characteristics of the new mini-pad hybrid MPGD-based detector of single photons are described and preliminary results of laboratory and beam tests are presented.

Abstract

The RICH-1 Detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS has undergone an important upgrade in 2016. Four new photon detectors, based on MPGD technology and covering a total active area larger than 1.2~$m^2$ have replaced the previously used MWPC-based photon detectors. The new detector architecture, resulting from a dedicated, eight years long, R\&D program, consists in a hybrid MPGD combination of two THGEMs and a Micromegas stage; the first THGEM, coated with a CsI layer, acts as a reflective photocathode. The signals are extracted from the anode pads by capacitive coupling and read-out by analog front-end electronics based on the APV25 chip. The new COMPASS RICH-1 photon detectors are described in detail: the detector design, the engineering aspects, the mass production, and the quality assessment are discussed. The assembly of the MPGD components and the installation of the new detectors are illustrated together with the main aspects of the commissioning. Abstract

The gaseous COMPASS RICH-1 detector uses two spherical mirror surfaces, segmented into 116 individual mirrors, to focus the Cherenkov photons onto the detector plane. Any mirror misalignment directly affects the detector resolution. The on-line Continuous Line Alignment and Monitoring (CLAM) photogrammetry-based method has been implemented to measure the alignment of individual mirrors which can be characterized by the center of curvature. The mirror wall reflects a regular grid of retroreflective strips placed inside the detector vessel. Then, the position of each mirror is determined from the image of the grid reflection. The images are collected by four cameras. Any small mirror misalignment results in changes of the grid lines’ positions in the image. The accuracy limits of the CLAM method were checked by laser interferometry and are below 0.1mrad.

Abstract

RICH counters for PID in the high momentum domain and in large acceptance experiments require photon detectors covering extended surface of several square meters and able to accept Cherenkov photons in a wide angular range. An ideal approach is represented by gaseous photon detectors, which allow covering wide surfaces at affordable costs. Novel gaseous photon detectors using closed geometry, as those possible with multistage arrangements of micropattern gaseous detectors, can overcome the limitations observed in present gaseous photon detectors with solid Csl photocathode, which are due to the ion bombardment of the photocathode. We have started an R&D programme to develop a Thick GEM-based photon detector and we report about the status of this project. ©2008 IEEE

Abstract

Particle identification at high rates is an important challenge for many current and future high-energy physics experiments. The upgrade of the COMPASS RICH-1 detector requires a new technique for Cherenkov photon detection at count rates of several $10^6$ per channel in the central detector region, and a read-out system allowing for trigger rates of up to 100 kHz. To cope with these requirements, the photon detectors in the central region have been replaced with the detection system described in this paper. In the peripheral regions, the existing multi-wire proportional chambers with CsI photocathode are now read out via a new system employing APV pre-amplifiers and flash ADC chips. The new detection system consists of multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMT) and fast read-out electronics based on the MAD4 discriminator and the F1-TDC chip. The RICH-1 is in operation in its upgraded version for the 2006 CERN SPS run. Abstract

International audience; COMPASS RICH-1 is a large size gaseous Imaging Cherenkov Detector providinghadron identification in the range from 3 to 55 GeV/c, in the wide acceptance spectrometer of theCOMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS.It uses a 3m long C4F10 radiator, a 21m2 large VUV mirror surface and two kinds of photondetectors: MAPMTs and MWPCs with CsI photocathodes, covering a total of 5.5m2. It is inoperation since 2002 and its performance increased thanks to progressive optimization and to amajor upgrade of its photon detection system, implemented in 2006; a new upgrade is foreseen for2016, with the use of MPGD-based photon detectors.The main characteristics of COMPASS RICH-1 components are described and the most criticalaspects related to the C4F10 radiator gas system, to the mirrors and their alignment, as well asthe performance of the photon detectors are presented and discussed. The response of the MWPCsand the observed evolution of the effective quantum efficiency of the CsI photocathodes is analyzed.The properties and performance of the MAPMTs with individual fused lens telescopes arepresented together with the readout characteristics. The PID performance of COMPASS RICH-1is discussed and the future upgrade program is mentioned.

Abstract

An R&D project is presented, aimed to develop a high performance gaseous detector of single photons, for the upgrade of the Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS. The detector has to stably operate at high gain and high rate, to provide good time resolution and insensitivity to magnetic field, and to offer the possibility to cover very large areas at affordable cost. The proposed solution is based on the use of a novel and robust electron multiplier, the Thick GEM (THGEM), arranged in a multilayer architecture, where the first layer is coated with a photosensitive CsI film. A systematic study of the response of THGEMs with various geometrical and production parameters and in different conditions was performed, leading to the choice of a set of optimal parameters. Prototypes of THGEM-based photon detectors able to efficiently detect Cherenkov photons have been built, tested in laboratory and operated in test beam exercises with typical gain of 10 5 and time resolution better than 10 ns. The engineering aspects of building large area (600×600 mm 2 ) THGEM-based photon detectors are presently being investigated.

Abstract

We consider dynamic scaling in gravity driven miscible viscous fingering. We prove rigorous one-sided bounds on bulk transport and coarsening in regimes of physical interest. The analysis relies on comparison with solutions to one-dimensional conservation laws, and new scale-invariant estimates. Our bounds on the size of the mixing layer are of two kinds: a naive bound that is sharp in the absence of diffusion, and a more careful bound that accounts for diffusion as a selection criterion in the limit of vanishingly small diffusion. The naive bound is simple and robust, but does not yield the experimental speed of transport. In a reduced model derived by Wooding [20], we prove a sharp upper bound on the size of the mixing layer in accordance with his experiments. Wooding’s model also provides an example of a scalar conservation law where the entropy condition is not the physically appropriate selection criterion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

RICH (Ring Imaging CHerenkov) counters for PID in the high momentum domain and in large acceptance experiments require photon detectors covering extended surface (several square meters) and able to accept Cherenkov photons in a wide angular range. An ideal approach is represented by gaseous photon detectors, which allow covering wide surfaces at affordable costs. The first generation of these detectors was based on the use of organic vapors. The second generation consists of CsI photocathodes and open geometry gaseous detectors (MWPC). In spite of the success of this approach, some limits of the technique arise from the bombardment of the photocathodes by the ions generated in the amplification process and by the photon feedback. A third generation of gaseous photon detectors using closed geometry, as those possible with multistage arrangements of micropattern gaseous detectors, can overcome the observed limitations. We have started an R&D programme to develop a Thick-GEM-based photon detector and we report about our initial studies. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract

A fast photon detection system has been built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, the large size gaseous RICH detector in use at the COMPASS Experiment at the CERN SPS since 2001. The photon detectors of the central region have been replaced by a new system based on multi-anode photomultipliers coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and a fast readout electronics system, while in the outer region the existing MWPCs with CsI photocathodes have been equipped with a new readout system, based on the APV chip. RICH-1 has been successfully operated in its upgraded version during the 2006 run. We report on the upgrade design and construction, and on the preliminary characterization of the upgraded RICH-1 performances: at saturation about 60 photons per ring have routinely been obtained and the background level has drastically been reduced thanks to the good time resolution of the new system, leading to a 2 σ π –K separation above 55 GeV/c.

Abstract

COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study hadron structure and spectroscopy. Hadron identification in the momentum range between $3$ and $55 GeV/c$ is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter, RICH-1. To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 has been upgraded by replacing four MWPC-based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD-based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a Micromegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during the 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during the 2017 run. Abstract

After pioneering gaseous detectors of single photon for RICH applications using CsI solid state photocathodes in MWPCs within the RD26 collaboration and by the constructions for the RICH detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS, in 2016 we have upgraded COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four novel photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5~m$^2$, have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS physics programme. They are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the upgrade are presented, including engineering, mass production, quality assessment and performance. Abstract

The requirements posed to high voltage power supply systems by the operation of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors are specific in terms of high resolution diagnostic features and intelligent dynamic voltage control. These requirements are needed both when technology development is performed and when extended detector systems are supplied and monitored. Systems satisfying all the needed features are not commercially available. A single channel high voltage system matching the Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector needs has been designed and realized, including its hardware and software components. The system employs a commercial DC ∕ DC converter and is coupled to a custom high resolution ammeter. Local intelligence, flexibility and high speed inter-connectivity are provided by a System on Chip Board and the use of a powerful FPGA. The single channel system has been developed, as critical milestone towards the realization of a multi-channel system. The design, implementation and performance of the system are reported in detail in this article, as well as the performance of the single channel power supply when connected to a Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector in realistic working condition during a test beam exercise.

Abstract

The novel MPGD-based photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1 consist of large-size hybrid MPGDs with multi-layer architecture including two layers of Thick-GEMs and a bulk resistive MicroMegas. The top surface of the first THGEM is coated with a CsI film which also acts as photo-cathode. These detectors have been successfully in operation at COMPASS since 2016. Concerning bias-voltage supply, the Thick-GEMs are segmented in order to reduce the energy released in case of occasional discharges, while the MicroMegas anode is segmented into pads individually biased with positive voltage while the micromesh is grounded. In total, there are about ten different electrode types and more than 20000 electrodes supplied by more than 100 HV channels, where appropriate correlations among the applied voltages are required for the correct operation of the detectors. Therefore, a robust control system is mandatory, implemented by a custom designed software package, while commercial power supply units are used. This sophisticated control system allows to protect the detectors against errors by the operator, to monitor and log voltages and currents at 1 Hz rate, and automatically react to detector misbehaviour. In addition, a voltage compensation system has been developed to automatically adjust the biasing voltage according to environmental pressure and temperature variations, to achieve constant gain over time. This development answers to a more general need. In fact, voltage compensation is always a requirement for the stability of gaseous detectors and its need is enhanced in multi-layer ones. Abstract

After pioneering gaseous detectors of single photon for RICH applications using CsI solid state photocathodes in MWPCs within the RD26 collaboration and by the constructions for the RICH detector of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS, in 2016 we have upgraded COMPASS RICH by novel gaseous photon detectors based on MPGD technology. Four novel photon detectors, covering a total active area of 1.5~m$^2$, have been installed in order to cope with the challenging efficiency and stability requirements of the COMPASS physics programme. These detectors are the first application in an experiment of MPGD-based single photon detectors. All aspects of the upgrade are presented, including engineering, mass production, quality assessment and performance. Abstract

Novel gaseous detectors of single photons for RICH applications have been developed and installed on COMPASS RICH-1 in 2016. They have a hybrid architecture consisting of two staggered THGEM layers (one equipped with a CsI photoconverting layer) and a bulk Micromegas; they cover a total area of 1.4 squared meters and operate stably and efficiently. They provide a single photon angular resolution of ~ 1.8 mrad and about 10 detected photons per ring at saturation. Abstract

We are developing large size THick GEM (THGEM)-based detectors of single photons, mainly meant for Cherenkov imaging applications. The R&D programme includes the complete characterisation of the THGEM electron multipliers, the study of the aspects related to the detection of single photons and the engineering towards large size detector prototypes. Our most recent achievements include dedicated studies concerning the ion backflow to the photocathode; relevant progress in the engineering aspects, in particularly related to the production of large-size THGEMs, where the strict correlation between the local gain-value and the local thickness-value has been demonstrated and a 300×300 mm2 active area detector has been successfully operated at the CERN PS T10 test beam; the introduction of a new hybrid detector architecture, offering promising performance, which is formed by a THGEM layer which acts both as photocathode and pre-amplification device, followed by a MICROMEGAS (MM) multiplication stage. We report about the general status of the R&D programme and, in detail, about the recent progress.

A Set of new MPGD-based Photon Detectors is being built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. Abstract

COMPASS is a fixed target experiment at CERN SPS aimed to study Hadron Structure and Spectroscopy. Hadron Identification in the momentum range between 3 and 55 GeV/c is provided by a large gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter (RICH-1). To cope with the challenges imposed by the new physics program of COMPASS, RICH-1 have been upgraded by replacing four MWPCs based photon detectors with newly developed MPGD based photon detectors. The architecture of the novel detectors is a hybrid combination of two layers of THGEMs and a MicroMegas. The top of the first THGEM is coated with CsI acting as a reflective photo-cathode. The anode is segmented in pads capacitively coupled to the APV-25 based readout. The new hybrid detectors have been commissioned during 2016 COMPASS data taking and stably operated during 2017 run. The ICARUS T600, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr-TPC) detector mainly devoted to neutrino physics, underwent a major overhauling at CERN in 2016–2017, which included also a new design of the read-out electronics, in view of its operation in Fermilab on the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) beam from 2019. The new more compact electronics showed capability of handling more efficiently the signals also in the intermediate Induction-2 wire plane with a significant increase of signal to noise (S/N), allowing for charge measurement also in this view. The new front-end and the analog to digital conversion (ADC) system are presented together with the results of the tests on 50 liters liquid argon TPC performed at CERN with cosmic rays. Abstract

We report about the development status of large area gaseous single photon detectors based on a novel hybrid concept for RICH applications. The hybrid concept combines Thick Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEMs) coupled to CsI, working as a photon sensitive pre-amplification stage, and Micromegas, as a multiplication stage. The most recent achievements within the research and development programme consist in the assembly and study of View the MathML source hybrid photon detectors, the optimization of front-end electronics, and engineering towards large area detectors. Hybrid detectors with an active area of View the MathML source have been successfully operated in laboratory conditions and at a CERN PS T10 test beam, achieving effective gains in the order of 105 and good time resolution (View the MathML source); APV25 front-end chips have been coupled to the detector resulting in noise levels lower than 1000 electrons; the production and characterization of View the MathML source THGEMs is ongoing. A set of hybrid detectors with View the MathML source active area is envisaged to upgrade COMPASS RICH-1 at CERN in 2016.

A fast photon detection system has been built as a part of the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH-1 detector: it is based on 576 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast readout electronics. This system has replaced the MWPCs with CsI photo-cathodes in the central region ( 1.3 m 2 , 25% of the total area) of the COMPASS RICH-1 photon detectors and has successfully been operated during the data taking in 2006 and 2007. We report about the fast photon detection system design, construction and commissioning, in particular about the design optimization and the validation tests of the lens telescopes. Preliminary values for the increased performances of COMPASS RICH-1 after the upgrade are also presented.

Abstract

A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the multi-anode photomultipliers. The data are digitized on the frontend boards and transferred via optical links to the readout system. Abstract

The COMPASS experiment makes use of the CERN SPS high-intensitymuon and hadron beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure and the spectroscopy of hadrons. One or more outgoing particles are detected in coincidence with the incoming muon or hadron. A large polarized target inside a superconducting solenoid is used for the measurements with the muon beam. Outgoing particles are detected by a two-stage, large angle and large momentum range spectrometer. The setup is built using several types of tracking detectors, according to the expected incident rate, required space resolution and the solid angle to be covered. Particle identification is achieved using a RICH counter and both hadron and electromagnetic calorimeters. The setup has been successfully operated from 2002 onwards using a muon beam. Data with a hadron beam were also collected in 2004. Abstract

The main characteristics of the COMPASS experimental setup for physics with hadron beams are described. This setup was designed to perform exclusive measurements of processes with several charged and/or neutral particles in the final state. Making use of a large part of the apparatus that was previously built for spin structure studies with a muon beam, it also features a new target system as well as new or upgraded detectors. The hadron setup is able to operate at the high incident hadron flux available at CERN. It is characterised by large angular and momentum coverages, large and nearly flat acceptances, and good two and three-particle mass resolutions. In 2008 and 2009 it was successfully used with positive and negative hadron beams and with liquid hydrogen and solid nuclear targets. This article describes the new and upgraded detectors and auxiliary equipment, outlines the reconstruction procedures used, and summarises the general performance of the setup., Comment: 91 pages, 101 figures and 7 tables

Abstract

A seven year-long R&D programme has been performed and the resulting detector architecture is a hybrid MPGD including two THick GEM (THGEM) multiplication stages followed a MICROMEGAS. The first THGEM board forms the photocathode support: its upper face is CsI coated. The properties of THGEM-based photocathodes have been studied in details. The two THGEM layers act as pre-amplification stages and, thanks to a staggered configuration, namely by the misalignment of the holes of the two THGEMs, the electron shower produced in the pre-amplification phase is distributed onto a larger surface portion of the following MICROMEGAS unit, where the final multiplication takes place: it is so possible to operate at gains as high as 105 and more even in radioactive environments. COMPASS RICH-1 is a large-size Cherenkov imaging counter with gaseous radiator for hadron identification up to 50 GeV/c. The construction of a set of large-size (unit size: 60×60 cm2) gaseous photon detectors based on the hybrid MPGD architecture for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1 is ongoing and the upgraded detector will be in operation in 2016. The R&D studies, the engineering aspects and the construction challenges are presented.

Abstract

In fundamental research, gas detectors of single photons are a must in the field of Cherenkov imaging techniques (RICH counters) for particle identification in large momentum ranges and with wide coverage of the phase space domain. These counters, already extensively used, are foreseen in the setups of future experiments in a large variety of fields in nuclear and particle physics. The quest of novel gaseous photon detector is dictated by the fact that the present generation of detectors has unique characteristics concerning operation in magnetic field, low material budget and cost, but it suffers of severe limitations in effective efficiency, rates, life time and stability, discouraging their use in high precision and high rate experiments. We are developing large size THick GEM (THGEM)-based detector of single photons. The R&D program includes the complete characterization of the THGEM electron multipliers, the study of the aspects related to the detection of single photons and the engineering towards large size detector prototype. Our most recent achievements include: dedicated studies concerning the ion back-flow to the photo-cathode; relevant progress in the engineering aspects, in particular related to the production of large-size THGEMs, where the strict correlation between the local gain-value and the local thickness-value has been demonstrated the operation of a 300 mm × 300 mm2 active area detector at the CERN PS T10 test beam; the introduction of a new hybrid detector architecture offering promising indication, which is formed by a THGEM layer which acts as CsI support and pre-amplification device followed by a MICROMEGAS multiplication stage. Abstract

The THicK GEM (THGEM) electron multipliers are derived from the GEM design, by scaling the geometrical parameters and changing the production technology. Small-size (a few cm(2)) detectors exhibit superb performance, while larger ones exhibit gain response and uniformity limitations. We have studied with a systematic approach several aspects concerning the material (type and thickness of the fibreglass plates) and the production procedure, in particular the cleaning and polishing stages. The net result is the production of large THGEM multipliers reproducing the performance of the small ones. We report in detail about the studies and the results.

Abstract

We are developing a single photon detector for Cherenkov imaging counters. This detector is based on the use of THGEM electron multipliers in a multilayer design. The major goals of our project are ion feedback suppression down to a few per cent, large gain, fast response, insensitivity to magnetic fields, and a large detector size. We report about the project status and perspectives. In particular, we present a systematic study of the THGEM response as a function of geometrical parameters, production techniques and the gas mixture composition. A package for pattern recognition and PID by COMPASS RICH-1 has been developed and used for the analysis of COMPASS data collected in the years 2002 to 2004, and 2006-2007 with the upgraded RICH-1 photon detectors. It has allowed the full characterization of the detector in the starting version and in the upgraded one, as well as the PID for physics results. Abstract

Image focusing in large RICH detectors is obtained by composite systems of mirror elements. Monitoring and adjusting the alignment of the mirror elements during data taking are important handles to improve the detector resolution. Mirror adjustment via piezoelectric actuators can combine unprecedented accuracy and match some fundamental requirements: the detector material budget can be kept low and the high purity of the gas radiator can be preserved, a prerequisite when UV photons are detected. A system based on this principle, well suited for COMPASS RICH-1 mirrors, is proposed.

Abstract

COMPASS RICH-1 is a large size gaseous Cherenkov detector. Two reflecting spherical surfaces, covering a total area of about 21 m 2 hosted in the radiator vessel provide image focusing. The segmented surfaces are formed by 116 mirrors, with individual degrees of freedom for angular adjustment. An original method has been developed and applied for the on-line monitoring of the mirror alignment. Relative tilts between neighbouring mirror elements create discontinuities in the image of continuous lines reflected by the mirror wall. The measurement of the discontinuities can also provide information about the absolute tilt with a resolution of 0.1 mrad. An independent check and calibration of this method has been performed in laboratory using, as reference, a laser interferometer. We present the technical solutions adopted to implement the dedicated setup, the results of the method calibration by laser interferometer, and the preliminary results obtained measuring the alignment of the RICH-1 mirror wall.

Abstract

The COMPASS experiment at CERN provides hadron identification in a wide momentum range employing a large size gaseous Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH). The presence of large uncorrelated background in the COMPASS environment was limiting the efficiency of COMPASS RICH-1 in the very forward regime. A major upgrade of RICH-1 required a new technique for Cherenkov photon detection at count rates of several 106/s per channel in the central detector part, and a read-out system allowing for trigger rates of up to 100 kHz. To cope with these requirements, the photon detectors of the central region have been replaced with a fast photon detection system described here, while, in the peripheral regions, the existing multi-wire proportional chambers with CsI photo-cathodes have been equipped with a new read-out system based on APV preamplifiers and flash ADC chips. The new system consists of multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes, and fast read-out electronics based on the MAD4 amplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1 TDC chip. The project was completely designed and implemented in less than two years: The upgraded detector is in operation since the 2006 CERN SPS run. We present the photon detection design, constructive aspects and test studies to characterise the single photon response of the MAPMTs coupled to the read-out system as well as the detector performance based on the 2006 data.

Abstract

A major upgrade of the Cherenkov photon detection system of COMPASS RICH-1 has been performed and it has been in operation since the 2006 physics run. The inner part of the photon detector has been replaced by a different technology in order to measure Cherenkov photons at high photoelectron rates, up to several times 10 6 per second and per channel. Cherenkov photons from 200 to 750 nm are detected by 576 multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) with 16 channels each, coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast, high sensitivity and high time resolution electronics read-out. To guarantee an optimal performance of the complete system, parameters like dark current, gain, uniformity, relative quantum efficiency have been measured for a totality of more than 600 MAPMTs (about 10 000 channels) in a fully automated test-stand, developed for this purpose. The ideal working point for each individual pixel could be ascertained by these measurements. In 2006 the newly equipped detector exhibited an excellent performance: about 56 detected photons per ring at saturation and a time resolution of better than 1 ns. We report about the MAPMT characterisation and the quality control set-up, protocol and results.

Abstract

A fast photon detection system has been built and assembled for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The system is based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to fused silica lenses to collect the light from a larger surface and to guide it to the photocathode, preserving the position information. The emphasis is on the fast response and high rate capability of the detectors and the associated electronics. The photon detection system is now ready and it will be employed in the 2006 COMPASS data taking. We report about the system design and construction.

Abstract

In the context of a project to upgrade the gas photon detectors of COMPASS RICH-1, we have performed an R&D programme aimed to develop photon detectors based on multi-layer arrangements of thick GEM electron multipliers coupled to a CsI photoconverter. For this purpose, thick GEMs have been characterised in detail including the gain performance, its dependance on the geometrical parameters and its time-evolution, a feature exhibited by the gas detectors with open insulator surfaces. The variation due to this evolution drammatically depends on the parameters themselves. In the present article we summarise the outcomes of the studies dedicated to the thick GEM gain and its evolution versus time. We also include a qualitative model which accounts for the peculiar details of the observed thick GEM gain time-evolution.

The COMPASS experiment at the SPS accelerator at CERN uses a large scale Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) to identify pions, kaons and protons in a wide momentum range. For the data taking in 2006, the COMPASS RICH has been upgraded in the central photon detection area (25% of the surface) with a new technology to detect Cherenkov photons at very high count rates of several 10^6 per second and channel and a new dead-time free read-out system, which allows trigger rates up to 100 kHz. The Cherenkov photons are detected by an array of 576 visible and ultra-violet sensitive multi-anode photomultipliers with 16 channels each. Abstract

In the context of the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, we are developing a fast photodetection system for RICH counters, based on UV extended Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT) and a custom, low dead-time electronic readout system. Photons are concentrated on the MAPMT photocathode by an optical system that preserves the position information. The ratio between the collection and the photosensitive surfaces is ∼7.5 in our design, larger than in previous applications. A new front-end electronics, based on a modified version of the MAD4 discriminator chip, is being realized to digitize the MAPMT signals. We report about the design of the photodetection system and of the associated electronic readout system, and on the preliminary test beam results.

Abstract

The development of a large size gaseous detector of single photons, able to stably operate at high gain and high rate, and to provide good time resolution and insensitivity to magnetic field would be beneficial to future Cherenkov Imaging Counters. The detector could be based on the use of a multilayer architecture of THGEM electron multipliers coupled to a solid state CsI photocathode. A systematic study of the response of THGEM-based counters versus the geometrical parameters has been performed and the main results will be presented. Small photon detector prototypes have been built and preliminary data obtained detecting single photoelectrons are presented as well. The key aspect of photoelectron extraction from the photocathode is illustrated presenting both simulation and dedicated measurement results. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA
