The BEaTriX (Beam Expander Testing X-ray) facility, being completed at INAF-Brera Astronomical Observatory, will represent an important step in the acceptance roadmap of Silicon Pore Optics mirror modules, and so ensure the final angular resolution of the ATHENA X-ray telescope. Aiming at establishing the final angular resolution that can be reached and the respective fabrication/positioning tolerances, we have been dealing with a set of comprehensive optical simulations. Simulations based on wave optics were carried out to predict the collimation performances of the paraboloidal mirror, including the effect of surface errors obtained from metrology. Full-ray-tracing routines were subsequently employed to simulate the full beamline. Finally, wavefront propagation simulation allowed us assessing the sensitivity and the response of a wavefront sensor that will be utilized for the qualification of the collimated beam. We report the simulation results and the methodologies we adopted.

BEaTriX (Beam Expander Testing X-ray) is the X-ray facility under construction at the INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico Brera (Merate, Italy) to prove that it is possible to perform the X-ray acceptance tests (PSF and Aeff) of the ATHENA mirror modules at the required rate and with the required accuracy. The unique optical setup makes use of a micro-focus X-ray source with anode in Titanium, a paraboloidal mirror with small radius of curvature, and a set of crystals to monochromate and expand the beam to fully illuminate the entrance pupil of the ATHENA MMs. The quality of the optical components, and their precise alignment, guarantees the production of a parallel beam at 4.51 keV, to be extended in a second phase to 1.49 keV in order to complete the acceptance requirements for the ATHENA MMs. The completion of the facility is expected to occur in July this year, while the commissioning will start in September. In this paper, we present the current status.

The construction of BEaTriX, the Beam Expander Testing X-ray facility, is underway at INAF-OAB (Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera). This laboratory-based X-ray source was designed to generate a broad (170 mm x 60 mm), uniform, and collimated X-ray beam, with a residual divergence of 1.5 arcsec HEW at either 1.49 keV and 4.51 keV. The main scientific driver for BEaTriX is represented by the opportunity to routinely calibrate the modular elements of the ATHENA (ESA) X-ray telescope, based on the silicon pore optics (SPO) technology. Nevertheless, the application domain of BEaTriX is potentially much wider (e.g., X-ray tomography). BEaTriX comprises a microfocus source of X-rays, followed by an optical chain including a collimating mirror, crystal monochromators, and an asymmetric beam expander. The final beam collimation and homogeneity relies on the optical quality of the optical components (X-ray source dimension, mirror polishing, crystal lattice regularity) and on their mutual alignment. In order to determine the most critical parameters, focus the development efforts, and establish specifications, a set of optical simulations has been built. Our paper describes the simulation tool we developed to this specific aim, and discusses the results achieved in terms of manufacturing and alignment tolerances.

ATHENA Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) Mirror Modules (MM) have to be tested and accepted prior to integration in the full ATHENA Mirror Assembly (MA). X-ray tests of the MMs are currently performed at the PTB laboratory of the BESSY synchrotron facility in pencil beam configuration, but they require a PSF reconstruction. Full illumination X-ray tests could be performed using a broad, low-divergent X-ray beam like the one in use at PANTER (MPE, Neuried, Germany), but the large volume to be evacuated makes it impossible to perform the functional tests at the MMs production rate (3 MM/day). To overcome these limitations, we started in 2012 to design a facility aimed at generating a broad (170 x 60 mm2), uniform and low-divergent (1.5 arcsec HEW) X-ray beam within a small lab (∼ 9 x 18 m2), to characterize the ATHENA MM. BEaTriX (the Beam Expander Testing X-ray facility) makes use of an X-ray microfocus source, a paraboloidal mirror, a crystal monochromation system, and an asymmetrically-cut diffracting crystal for the beam expansion. These optical components, in addition to a modular low-vacuum level (10-3 mbar), enable to match the ATHENA SPO acceptance requirements. The realization of this facility at INAF-OAB in Merate (Italy) is now on going. Once completed, BEaTriX can be used to test the Silicon Pore Optics modules of the ATHENA X-ray observatory, as well as other optics, like the ones of the Arcus mission. In this paper we report the advancement status of the facility.

The BEaTriX (Beam Expander Testing X-ray) facility is now under construction at INAF-Brera Astronomical Observatory with the support of ESA. We aim to use it as a pathfinder to demonstrate the feasibility of the acceptance tests of the ATHENA’s Silicon pore optics Mirror Modules (MM), i.e., point spread function and effective area measurements at two energies for all MMs. A microfocus X-ray source placed in the focus of a paraboloid mirror will provide a collimated X-ray beam to the next stages featuring the facility, i.e., the monochromator and the beam expansion units, which will finally enable the full illumination of the mirror modules under test. The collimating mirror has to satisfy severe surface specifications to allow the divergence of the X-ray beam reaching the requirements. Simulations, based on physical optics, have shown that the optical quality of the mirror surface has to reach 0.5 arcsec Half-Energy Width (HEW) at 4.51 keV. We procured a ground and lapped mirror substrate in HOQ 310 fused quartz material. The first step of the process is based on the bonnet polishing technology with our CNC IRP1200 Zeeko machine, and it is guided by the analysis of the metrological data obtained by the optical profilometer present at Media Lario S.r.l. laboratories. The spatial frequency errors not correctable by bonnet polishing can be then removed by smoothing and superpolishing processes, followed by ion beam figuring to correct the remaining errors in the low frequency range. In this paper, we report on the analysis performed to correlate the requirement on beam divergence to the manufacturing tolerances on the surface. We present the manufacturing process and the results so far achieved.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillation of stars) is the ESA Medium size dedicated to exo-planets discovery, adopted in the framework of the Cosmic Vision program. The PLATO launch is planned in 2026 and the mission will last at least 4 years in the Lagrangian point L2. The primary scientific goal of PLATO is to discover and characterize a large amount of exo-planets hosted by bright nearby stars, constraining with unprecedented precision their radii by mean of transits technique and the age of the stars through by asteroseismology. By coupling the radius information with the mass knowledge, provided by a dedicated ground-based spectroscopy radial velocity measurements campaign, it would be possible to determine the planet density. Ultimately, PLATO will deliver the largest samples ever of well characterized exo-planets, discriminating among their ‘zoology’. The large amount of required b right stars can be achieved by a relatively small aperture telescope (about 1 meter class) with a wide Field of View (about 1000 square degrees). The PLATO strategy is to split the collecting area into 24 identical 120 mm aperture diameter fully refractive cameras with partially overlapped Field of View delivering an overall instantaneous sky covered area of about 2232square degrees. The opto-mechanical sub-system of each camera, namely Telescope Optical Unit, is basically composed by a 6 lenses fully refractive optical system, presenting one aspheric surface on the front lens, and by a mechanical structure made in AlBeMet.

International audience; PLATO stands for PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations and it is the forthcoming third Medium sized mission of ESA, planned to be launched in 2024. Its optical payload is an ensemble of 34 small telescopes that mimic a single one meter class aperture with a huge Field of View of more than 50 degrees in size. Aiming to find exoplanets around bright nearby stars it is designed to discover a significant number of relatively nearby Earth-like worlds. Thin glass modular mirrors are a viable solution to build future X-ray telescopes with high angular resolution and large collecting area. In our laboratories, we shape thin glass foils by hot slumping and we apply pressure to assist the replication of a cylindrical mould figure; this technology is coupled with an integration process able to damp low frequency errors and produces optics in the Wolter I configuration, typical for the X-ray telescopes. From the point of view of the hot slumping process, the efforts were focused in reducing low-, mid- and high- frequency errors of the formed Eagle glass foils. Some of our slumped glass foils were used for the development of active X-ray optics, where piezoelectric actuators are used to correct the slumped glass foil deviations from the ideal shape. In particular, they were used for the Adjustable X-raY optics for astrOnoMy project (AXYOM) developed in Italy, and the X-ray Surveyor mission, as developed at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory / Center for Astrophysics (SAO/CfA) in USA. In this paper we describe the optimisation of the hot slumping process, comparing the results with the requirements of the considered active optics projects. Finally, since the present configuration of the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) coating equipment is limited to 100 x 100 mm2, the slumped glass foils used for the SAO project were cut from 200 x 200 mm2 to 100 x 100 mm2, and a low-frequency change was observed. A characterisation of the profile change upon cutting is presented.

An important challenge for the X-ray astronomy of the new millennium is represented by the implementation of an X-ray telescope able to maintain the exquisite angular resolution of Chandra (with a sub-arcsec HEW, on-axis) but, at the same time, being characterized by a much larger throughput and grasp. A mission with similar characteristics is represented by the X-ray Surveyor Mission. The project has been recently proposed in USA and is being currently studied by NASA. It will host an X-ray telescope with an effective area of more than 2 square meters at 1 keV (i.e. 30 times greater than Chandra) and a 15-arcminutes field-of-view, with 1-arcsecond or better half-power diameter (versus the 4 arcmin diameter of Chandra). While the scientific reasons for implementing a similar mission are clear, being related to compelling problems like e.g. the formation and subsequent growth of black hole seeds at very high redshift or the identification of the first galaxy groups and proto-clusters, the realization of a grazing-angle optics system able to fulfil these specs remain highly challenging. Different technologies are being envisaged, like e.g. the use of adjustable segmented mirrors (with use of piezoelectric or magneto-restrictive film actuators on the back surface) or the direct polishing of a variety of thin substrates or the use of innovative correction methods like e.g. differential deposition, ionfiguring or the correction of the profile via controlled stress films. In this paper we present a possible approach based on the direct polishing (with final ion figuring correction of the profile) of thin SiO2 segmented substrates (typically 2 mm thick), discussing different aspects of the technology under implementation and presenting some preliminary results.

The BEaTriX (Beam Expander Testing X-ray facility) project is an X-ray apparatus under construction at INAF/OAB to generate a broad (200 x 60 mm2), uniform and low-divergent X-ray beam within a small lab (6 x 15 m2). BEaTriX will consist of an X-ray source in the focus a grazing incidence paraboloidal mirror to obtain a parallel beam, followed by a crystal monochromation system and by an asymmetrically-cut diffracting crystal to perform the beam expansion to the desired size. Once completed, BEaTriX will be used to directly perform the quality control of focusing modules of large X-ray optics such as those for the ATHENA X-ray observatory, based on either Silicon Pore Optics (baseline) or Slumped Glass Optics (alternative), and will thereby enable a direct quality control of angular resolution and effective area on a number of mirror modules in a short time, in full X-ray illumination and without being affected by the finite distance of the X-ray source. However, since the individual mirror modules for ATHENA will have an optical quality of 3-4 arcsec HEW or better, BEaTriX is required to produce a broad beam with divergence below 1-2 arcsec, and sufficient flux to quickly characterize the PSF of the module without being significantly affected by statistical uncertainties. Therefore, the optical components of BEaTriX have to be selected and/or manufactured with excellent optical properties in order to guarantee the final performance of the system. Thermal effects in PLATO are analyzed in terms of uniform temperature variations, longitudinal and lateral temperature gradients. We characterize these effects by evaluating the PSF centroid shifts and the Enclosed Energy variations across the whole FoV. These patterns can then be used to gauge the thermal behavior of each individual telescope in order to improve the local photometric calibration across the PLATO field of view.

MAORY is one of the four instruments for the E-ELT approved for construction. It is an adaptive optics module offering two compensation modes: multi-conjugate and single-conjugate adaptive optics. The project has recently entered its phase B. A system-level overview of the current status of the project is given in this paper.

PLATO stands for PLAnetary Transits and Oscillation of stars and is a Medium sized mission selected as M3 by the European Space Agency as part of the Cosmic Vision program. The strategy behind is to scrutinize a large fraction of the sky collecting lightcurves of a large number of stars and detecting transits of exo-planets whose apparent orbit allow for the transit to be visible from the Earth. Furthermore, as the transit is basically able to provide the ratio of the size of the transiting planet to the host star, the latter is being characterized by asteroseismology, allowing to provide accurate masses, radii and hence density of a large sample of extra solar bodies. In order to be able to then follow up from the ground via spectroscopy radial velocity measurements these candidates the search must be confined to rather bright stars. To comply with the statistical rate of the occurrence of such transits around these kind of stars one needs a telescope with a moderate aperture of the order of one meter but with a Field of View that is of the order of 50 degrees in diameter. This is achieved by splitting the optical aperture into a few dozens identical telescopes with partially overlapping Field of View to build up a mixed ensemble of differently covered area of the sky to comply with various classes of magnitude stars. The single telescopes are refractive optical systems with an internally located pupil defined by a CaF2 lens, and comprising an aspheric front lens and a strong field flattener optical element close to the detectors mosaic. In order to continuously monitor for a few years with the aim to detect planetary transits similar to an hypothetical twin of the Earth, with the same revolution period, the spacecraft is going to be operated while orbiting around the L2 Lagrangian point of the Earth-Sun system so that the Earth disk is no longer a constraints potentially interfering with such a wide field continuous uninterrupted survey.

The project PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is one of the selected medium class (M class) missions in the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. The mean scientific goal of PLATO is the discovery and study of extrasolar planetary systems by means of planetary transits detection. The opto mechanical subsystem of the payload is made of 32 normal telescope optical units (N-TOUs) and 2 fast telescope optical units (FTOUs). The optical configuration of each TOU is an all refractive design based on six properly optimized lenses. In the current baseline, in front of each TOU a Suprasil window is foreseen. The main purposes of the entrance window are to shield the following lenses from possible damaging high energy radiation and to mitigate the thermal gradient that the first optical element will experience during the launch from ground to space environment. In contrast, the presence of the window increases the overall mass by a non-negligible quantity. We describe here the radiation and thermal analysis and their impact on the quality and risks assessment, summarizing the trade-off process with pro and cons on having or dropping the entrance window in the optical train.

The project PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is one of the selected medium class (M class) missions in the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. The main scientific goal of PLATO is the discovery and study of extrasolar planetary systems by means of planetary transits detection. According to the current baseline, the scientific payload consists of 34 all refractive telescopes having small aperture (120mm) and wide field of view (diameter greater than 37 degrees) observing over 0.5-1 micron wavelength band. The telescopes are mounted on a common optical bench and are divided in four families of eight telescopes with an overlapping line-of-sight in order to maximize the science return. Remaining two telescopes will be dedicated to support on-board star-tracking system and will be specialized on two different photometric bands for science purposes. The performance requirement, adopted as merit function during the analysis, is specified as 90% enclosed energy contained in a square having size 2 pixels over the whole field of view with a depth of focus of +/-20 micron. Given the complexity of the system, we have followed a Montecarlo analysis approach for manufacturing and alignment tolerances. We will describe here the tolerance method and the preliminary results, speculating on the assumed risks and expected performances.

The atmospheric Cherenkov telescope MAGIC for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy is operating since late 2003 on the Canary island of La Palma. Its 17 m diameter mirror is composed of 964 square all-aluminum mirrors of ∼ 0.5 m side, making up a parabola of 236 m 2 area. Each mirror is composed of a sandwich of two thin aluminum layers interspaced by a honeycomb structure that ensures rigidity, high temperature conductivity and low weight. The surface of each raw blank is diamond milled to provide high reflectivity and a slightly different focal length to fit the overall parabolic shape of the reflector. We report about the stability and performance of the surface exposed to the atmosphere for over 3 years. For the construction of the clone of the first telescope, dubbed MAGIC II, major improvements of the design and performance of the reflective surface were required. Given the good experience with aluminum mirrors, a similar assembly was tested, but the area was increased to 1 m 2 , which allowed to skip the inter-alignment of four mirrors within a panel and to reduce substantially the weight. The increased rigidity of the mirror unit resulted in an improved focussing quality. In addition, a second class of mirrors will be installed in the outermost part of the reflector, namely glass mirrors obtained by cold-slumping replica technique. Details on the construction of both type MAGIC II new mirrors and the 17 m reflector will be presented.

International audience; We present relative astrometric measurements of visual binaries made during the first semester of 2006, with the Pupil Interferometry Speckle camera and COronagraph at the 102-cm Zeiss telescope of the Brera Astronomical Observatory, in Merate. Our sample contains orbital couples as well as binaries whose motion is still uncertain. We obtained 217 new measurements of 194 objects, with angular separations in the range 0.1-4.2arcsec, and an average accuracy of 0.01arcsec. The mean error on the position angles is 0.5°. About half of those angles could be determined without the usual 180° ambiguity by the application of triple-correlation techniques. We also present a revised orbit for ADS 277 for which the previously published orbit resulted in a large residual from our measurements.

The Slumped Glass Optics technology, developed at INAF/OAB since a few years, is becoming a competitive solution for the realization of the future X-ray telescopes with a very large collecting area, as e.g. the proposed Athena, with more than 2 m2 effective area at 1 keV and with a high angular resolution (5'' HEW). The developed technique is based on modular elements, named X-ray Optical Units (XOUs), made of several layers of thin foils of glass, previously formed by direct hot slumping in cylindrical configuration, and then stacked in a Wolter-I configuration, through interfacing ribs. The achievable global angular resolution of the optics relies on the surface shape accuracy of the slumped foils, on the smoothness of the mirror surfaces and on the correct integration and co-alignment of the mirror segments achieved with a dedicated Integration Machine (IMA). In this paper we provide an update of the project development, reporting on the last results achieved. In particular, we will present the results obtained with full illumination X-ray tests for the last developed prototypes.

The optics of a number of future X-ray telescopes will have very long focal lengths (10 - 20 m), and will consist of a number of nested/stacked thin, grazing-incidence mirrors. The optical quality characterization of a real mirror can be obtained via profile metrology, and the Point Spread Function of the mirror can be derived via one of the standard computation methods. However, in practical cases it can be difficult to access the optical surfaces of densely stacked mirror shells, after they have been assembled, using the widespread metrological tools. For this reason, the assessment of the imaging resolution of a system of mirrors is better obtained via a direct, full-illumination test in X-rays. If the focus cannot be reached, an intra-focus test can be performed, and the image can be compared with the simulation results based on the metrology, if available. However, until today no quantitative information was extracted from a full-illumination, intra-focal exposure. In this work we show that, if the detector is located at an optimal distance from the mirror, the intensity variations of the intra-focal, full-illumination image in single reflection can be used to reconstruct the profile of the mirror surface, without the need of a wavefront sensor. The Point Spread Function can be subsequently computed from the reconstructed mirror shape. We show the application of this method to an intra-focal (8 m distance from mirror) test performed at PANTER on an optical module prototype made of hot-slumped glass foils with a 20 m focal length, from which we could derive an expected imaging quality near 16 arcsec HEW.

One of the main guidelines for future X-ray astronomy projects like, e.g., XEUS (ESA) and Generation-X (NASA) is to utilize grazing-incidence focusing optics with extremely large telescopes (several tens of m2 at 1 keV), with a dramatic increase in collecting area of about two order of magnitude compared to the current X-ray telescopes. In order to avoid the problem of the source's confusion limit at low fluxes, the angular resolution required for these optics should be superb (a few arcsec at most). The enormous mirror dimensions together with the high imaging performances give rise to a number of manufacturing problems. It is basically impossible to realize so large mirrors from closed Wolter I shells which benefit from high mechanical stiffness. Instead the mirrors need to be formed as rectangular segments and a series of them will be assembled in a petal. Taking into account the realistic load capabilities of space launchers, to be able to put in orbit so large mirror modules the mass/geometric-area ratio of the optics should be very small. Finally, with a so large optics mass it would be very difficult to provide the electric power for an optics thermal active control, able to maintain the mirrors at the usual temperature of 20 °C. Therefore, very likely, the optics will instead operate in extreme thermal conditions, with the mirror temperature oscillating between −30 and −40 °C, that tends to exclude the epoxy replication approach (the mismatch between the CTE of the substrate and that of the resin would cause prohibitively large deformations of the mirror surface profiles). From these considerations light weight materials with high thermal–mechanical properties such as glass or ceramics become attractive to realize the mirrors of future Xray telescopes. In this paper, we will discuss a segments manufacturing method based on BorofloatTM glass. A series of finite element analysis concerning different aspects of the production, testing and integration of the optics are also presented as well.

Future X-ray telescopes with very large collecting area, like the proposed Athena with more than 2 m2 effective area at 1 keV, need to be realized as assemblies of a large number of X-ray optical units, named X-ray Optical Units (XOUs). The Brera Astronomical Observatory (INAF-OAB) is developing a new technology to manufacture these modular elements, compatible with an angular resolution of 5 arcsec HEW (Half-Energy-Width). This technique consists in stacking in a Wolter-I configuration several layers of thin foils of glass, previously formed by direct hot slumping. The achievable global angular resolution of the optics relies on the required surface shape accuracy of slumped foils, on the smoothness of the mirror surfaces and on the correct integration and co-alignment of the mirror segments operated trough a dedicated Integration Machine (IMA). In this paper we provide an overview of the project development, reporting on the very promising results achieved so far, including in-focus full illumination X-ray tests of the prototype (Proof of Concept, POC#2, integrated at the beginning of 2013) for which an HEW of 22.1’’ has been measured at Panter/MPE. Moreover we report on the on-going activities, with a new integrated prototype (PoC#3). X-ray test in pencil beam revealed that at least a segment between two external ribs is characterized by an HEW well below 10’’. Lastly, the overall process up-grade to go from 20 m to 12m focal length (to be compatible with Athena+ configuration) is presented.

Silicon Pore Optics, after 10 years of development, forms now the basis for future large (L) class astrophysics Xray observatories, such as the ATHENA mission to study the hot and energetic universe, matching the L2 science theme recently selected by ESA for launch in 2028. The scientific requirements result in an optical design that demands high angular resolution (5“) and large effective area (2 m 2 at a few keV) of an X-ray lens with a focal length of 12 to14 m. Silicon Pore Optics was initially based on long (25 to 50 m) focal length telescope designs, which could achieve several arc second angular resolution by curving the silicon mirror in only one direction (conical approximation). With the advent of shorter focal length missions we started to develop mirrors having a secondary curvature, allowing the production of Wolter-I type optics, which are on axis aberration-free. In this paper we will present the new manufacturing process, discuss the impact of the ATHENA optics design on the technology development and present the results of the latest X-ray test campaigns.

With the selection of “The hot and energetic Universe” as science theme for ESA's second large class mission (L2) in the Cosmic Vision programme, work is focusing on the technology preparation for an advanced X-ray observatory. The core enabling technology for the high performance mirror is the Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) [1 to 23], a modular X-ray optics technology, which utilises processes and equipment developed for the semiconductor industry. The paper provides an overview of the programmatic background, the status of SPO technology and gives an outline of the development roadmap and activities undertaken and planned by ESA on optics, coatings [24 to 30] and test facilities [31, 33].

We describe the main characteristics of a small satellite mission aimed to survey part of the sky in the x-ray band (WAXS — Wide Angle x-ray Survey) using a Wide Field of view X-ray Telescope (WFXT). We demonstrate that using the new technologies we have developed, it is possible to construct x-ray mirrors according to a new optical design which optimize the angular resolution over a large field of view.

The implementation of a X-ray mission with high imaging capabilities, similar to those achieved with Chandra (< 1 arcsec Half Energy Width, HEW), but with a much larger throughput is a very attractive perspective, even if challenging. For such a mission the scientific opportunities, in particular for the study of the early Universe, would remain at the state of the art for the next decades. At the beginning of the new millennium the XEUS mission has been proposed, with an effective area of several m2 and an angular resolution better than 2 arcsec HEW. Unfortunately, after the initial study, this mission was not implemented, mainly due to the costs and the low level of technology readiness. Currently the most advanced proposal for such a kind of mission is the SMART-X project, led by CfA and involving several other US Institutes. This project is based on adjustable segments of thin foil mirrors with piezo-electric actuators, aiming to achieve an effective area < 2 m2 at 1 keV and an angular resolution better than 1 arcsec HEW. Another attractive technology to realize an X-ray telescope with similar characteristics is being developed at NASA/Goddard. In this case the mirrors are based on Si substrates that are super-polished and figured starting from a bulky Si ingot, from which they are properly cut. Here we propose an alternative method based on precise direct grinding, figuring and polishing of thin (a few mm) glass shells with innovative deterministic polishing methods. This is followed by a final correction via ion figuring to obtain the desired accuracy in order to achieve the 1 arc sec HEW requirement. For this purpose, a temporary stiffening structure is used to support the shell from the polishing operations up to its integration in the telescope supporting structure. We will present the technological process under development, the results achieved so far and some mission scenarios based on this kind of optics, aiming to achieve an effective area more than 10 times larger than Chandra and an angular resolution of 1 arcsec HEW on axis and of a few arcsec off-axis across a large field of view (1 deg in diameter).

Future high energy astrophysics missions will require high performance novel X-ray optics to explore the Universe beyond the limits of the currently operating Chandra and Newton observatories. Innovative optics technologies are therefore being developed and matured by the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with research institutions and industry, enabling leading-edge future science missions. Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) [1 to 21] and Slumped Glass Optics (SGO) [22 to 29] are lightweight high performance X-ray optics technologies being developed in Europe, driven by applications in observatory class high energy astrophysics missions, aiming at angular resolutions of 5” and providing effective areas of one or more square meters at a few keV. This paper reports on the development activities led by ESA, and the status of the SPO and SGO technologies, including progress on high performance multilayer reflective coatings [30 to 35]. In addition, the progress with the X-ray test facilities and associated beam-lines is discussed [36].

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. This paper want to show an innovative amateur oriented telescope with an unconventional alt-alt conguration. The goal is to make a telescope with good optical quality reducing production costs by adopting a gimbal based mounting to develop an alt-alt conguration suitable for a telescope. Reduce costs while preserving the optical quality is a necessary condition to allow small groups of amateur astronomers, schools and cultural clubs, with reduced economic resources, to acquire an astronomical instrument that encourages learning and advancing astrophysical knowledge. This unconventional mechanism for the realization of a telescope alt-alt provides signicant advantages. The traditional rotary motors coupled with expensive precision bearings are replaced with two simple linear actuators coupled to a properly preloaded gimbal joint and the cell becomes the primary structure of the telescope. A second advantage would be secured by mechanical simplicity evident in the easy portability of the instrument. The frame alt-alt has some limitations on the horizon pointing but does not show the zenith blind spot of the alt-az mount. A dedicated alt-alt pointing and tracking model is under development to be compatible with commercial telescope softwares and with the proposed new mounting.

The International X-ray Observatory (IXO) is a joint mission concept studied by the ESA, NASA, and JAXA space agencies. The main goal of the mission design is to achieve a large effective area (>2.5m2 at 1 keV) and a good angular resolution (5 arcsec HEW at 1 keV) at the same time. The Brera Astronomical Observatory - INAF (Italy), under the support of ESA, is developing a method for the realization of the X-Ray Optical Units, based on the use of slumped thin glass segments to form densely packed modules in a Wolter type I optical configuration. In order to reach the very challenging integration requirements, it has been developed an innovative assembly approach for aligning and mounting the IXO mirror segments. The method is based on the use of an integration mould for each foil. In particular the glass segment is forced to adhere to the integration mould in order to maintain the optimal figure without deformations until the integration of the foil in the stack is completed. In this way an active correction for major existing figure errors after slumping is also achieved. Moreover reinforcing ribs are used in order to connect the facets to each-other and to realize a robust monolithic stack of plates. In this paper we present the design, the development and the validation status of a special Integration Machine (IMA) that has been specifically developed to allow the integration of the Plate Pairs into prototypal X-Ray Optical Unit stacks.

Effective area requirements for the large X-ray mirror of the International X-ray Observatory (IXO) are about 3 m2 at 1keV, 0.65 m2 at 6 keV and 150 cm2 at 30 keV. Because of its large dimension, the telescope cannot be realized as a monolithic structure but rather it requires the integration and assembly in the telescope optical bench of a number of basic module units, called X-ray Optical Unit (XOU). We are currently studying a method for the production of these basic units that is based on the slumping technology for the production of thin glass segmented mirrors. It foresees the implementation of a stacking integration concept based on the use of reinforcing ribs connecting the glass segments in order to create very stiff structures. This paper reports on the last design of the single optical module and describe the results of FEM analyses that show how it is possible to use an innovative approach to the integration of the slumped glass foils.

In this paper we present the "Characterization Universal Profilometer" (CUP), a new metrological instrument developed at the Brera Observatory for the 3D surface figure mapping of X-ray segmented mirrors. The CUP working principle is based on the measure of the the distance between the surface under test from a rigid reference dish. This approach is made possible by the coupled use of two sensors, the CHRocodile® optical device and the SIOS triple beam interferometer, mounted onto a proper system of x-y-z stage of translators. In this paper we describe the working principle of the new instrument. We will also present the results of the commissioning performed for a CUP breadboard developed at the Brera Observatory. The CUP offers the possibility to perform an high accuracy metrology of thin glass segments produced via hot slumping, to be used in future segmented X-ray mirrors like those foreseen aboard IXO or other projects that will make use of active X-ray mirrors.

PLATO is the acronym of PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars, and it is a mission proposed for the ESA Cosmic Vision program in the Medium size program, with the target to detect and characterize exoplanets by the means of their transit on a bright star. The instrumental overall layout proposed by the Plato Payload Consortium consists in a multitelescope concept instrument, composed by several tens of telescope units, for which we are developing an all refractive optical solution. These devices are characterized by a very large Field of View (more than 20 degrees on one side) with an optical quality that fits most of the energy into a single CCD pixel. Such a goal can be achieved in a variety of solutions, some including aspheric elements as well. A complete prototype of one telescope unit is foreseen to be built initially (during phase B1) to show the alignment feasibility and, only in a second moment (Phase B2), to perform full environmental and functional test. The aim of this article is to describe the alignment, integration and verification strategy of the opto-mechanics of the prototype. Both the approaches of testing the telescope at the target working temperature or to test it at ambient temperature around a displaced zero point, taking into account the effects of thermal deformations, are considered and briefly sketched in this work.

The project PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is one of the three medium class (M class) missions selected in 2010 for definition study in the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. The main scientific goals of PLATO are the i) discovery and study of extra-solar planetary systems, (including those hosting Earth-like planets in their habitable zone) by means of planetary transits detection from space and radial velocity follow-up from ground, and ii) the characterization of the hosting stars through seismic analysis, in order to determine with high accuracy planetary masses and ages. According to the study made by the PLATO Payload Consortium (PPLC) during the PLATO assessment phase, the scientific payload consists of 34 all refractive telescopes having small aperture (120 mm) and wide field of view (greater than 1000 degree2) observing over 0.5-1 micron wavelength band. The telescopes are mounted on a common optical bench and are divided in four families with an overlapping line-of-sight in order to maximize the science return. In this paper, we will describe the detailed design of the Telescope Optical Units (TOUs) focusing on the selected optical configuration and the expected performances.

The International X-ray Observatory (IXO) is being studied as a joint mission by the NASA, ESA and JAXA space agencies. The main goals of the mission are large effective area (>3m2 at 1 keV) and a good angular resolution (

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), currently in its early design phase, is a proposed new project for groundbased gamma-ray astronomy with at least 10 times higher sensitivity than current instruments. CTA is planned to consist of several tens of large Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) with a combined reflective surface of up to 10,000 m 2 . The challenge for the future CTA array is to develop lightweight and cost efficient mirrors with high production rates, good longterm durability and adequate optical properties. The technologies currently under investigation comprise different methods of carbon fibre/epoxy based substrates, sandwich concepts with cold-slumped surfaces made of thin float glass and different structural materials like aluminum honeycomb, glass foam or PU foam inside, and aluminum sandwich structures with either diamond milled surfaces or reflective foils. The current status of the mirror development for CTA will be summarized together with investigations on the improvement of the reflective surfaces and their protection against degradation.

As for all space missions, the limit imposed on the payload mass budget by the launcher is the main driver that forces the use of very lightweight optics. Considering the Internatio nal X-ray Observatory (IXO) mission the present configuration has a mirror collecting area in the order of 3 m 2 at 1.25 keV, 0.65 m at 6 keV, and 150 cm 2 at 30 keV. These large collecting areas could be obtained with a mirror assembly composed of a large nu mber of high quality glass segments each being able to deliver the required angular resolution bette r or equal to 5 arcsec. These segments will form a X-Ray Optical Unit (XOU), an optical subunit of the telescope, and the XOUs will be assembled to form the whole mirror system. Based on the INAF-OAB experience in the thermal slumping of thin glass optics, a possible approach for the realization of large size and lightweight X-ray mirrors is described in this paper. Moulds made in a suitable material (as for example Silicon Carbide or Fused Silica) and having the suitable (parabolic and hyperbolic) profile are used for the realization of thin glass Mirror Plates (MP), with dimensions in the range of 200-400 mm. After a thermal cycle the slum ped MPs are characterized for acceptati on and handled by means of an active support using vacuum suction for the integration phase. In this phase an active optical feedback is used to ensure the correct alignment of the MPs within the XOU. The MPs are then glued in its proper position in the XOU using also suitable glass ribs for the stiffening of the whole module. An investigation in the problems and possible solutions to the slumping, measurement, integration and testing of the glass MPs into the XOU will be given, particularly with respect to a XOU scaled prototype that will be manufactured and used to assess the technology. In the last decade Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy has improved rapidly opening a new window for ground-based astronomy with surprising implications in the theoretical models. Nowadays, it is possible to make imaging, photometry and spectroscopy of sources with good sensitivity and angular resolution using new facilities as MAGIC, HESS and VERITAS. The latest results of astronomy in the TeV band obtained using such facilities demonstrate the essential role of this window for high energy astrophysics. For this reason new projects (e.g. CTA and AGIS) have been started with the aim to increase the sensitivity and expand the energy band coverage. For such telescopes arrays probably tens of thousands of optical mirror panels must be manufactured with an adequate industrial process, then tested and mounted into the telescopes. Because of the high number of mirrors it is mandatory to perform feasibility studies to test various techniques to meet the technical and cost-effectiveness requirements for the next generation TeV telescopes as CTA and AGIS. In this context at the Astronomical Observatory of Brera (INAF-OAB) we have started the investigation of different techniques for the manufacturing of stiff and lightweight optical glass mirror panels. These panels show a sandwich-like structure with two thin glass skins on both sides, the reflective one being optically shaped using an ad-hoc slumping procedure. The technologies here presented can be addressed both for primary or secondary mirrors for the next generation of Cherenkov telescopes. In this paper we present and discuss the different techniques we are investigating with some preliminary results obtained from test panels realized.

The XEUS mission (X-ray Evolving-Universe Spectroscopy Mission) of ESA, in the present configuration has a mirror collecting area in the order of 5-6 m 2 @ 1 keV, 2 m 2 @ 7 keV and 1 m 2 @ 10 keV. These large collecting areas could be obtained with a mirror assembly composed of a large number of high quality segments each being able to deliver the angular resolution requested by the mission or better. The XEUS telescope will fit in the fairing of an Ariane 5 ECA launcher and hence its diameter is presently of about 4.5 m. The request in terms of angular resolution of the telescope has been set to 5 arcsec with a goal of 2 arcsec. Due to the large size of the optics it is impossible to create closed shells like those used for XMM or Chandra and hence it will be necessary to assemble a large number of segments (for example of ~0.6 m x ~0.3 m size) to recreate the mirror shells. These segments will form a module, an optical sub-unit of the telescope. The modules will be assembled to form the whole mirror system. As for all the space missions, the limits imposed on the payload mass budget by the launcher is the main driver that force the use of very lightweight optics and this request is of course very challenging. For example, the current design for XEUS foresees a geometric-area/mass ratio better than about 30 cm 2 /kg. In this article is illustrated a possible approach for the realization of large size and lightweight X-ray mirrors that derive from an experience gained from a previous work made in INAF-OAB on the thermal slumping of thin glass optics. The process foresees the use of a mould having a good optical figure but opposite shape respect to the segment to be slumped. On the mould is placed an initially flat glass sheet. With a suitable thermal cycle the glass sheet is conformed to the mould shape. Once tested for acceptance the glass sheet it is then integrated into a module by means of a robotic arm having a feedback system to confirm the correct alignment. A study on different optical geometries using the classical Wolter I and Kirkpatrick-Baez configurations has been also performed to investigate the theoretical performances obtainable with optics made using very thin glass shells.

We present relative astrometric measurements of visual binaries made during the second semester of 2005, with the speckle camera PISCO at the 102 cm Zeiss telescope of Brera Astronomical Observatory, in Merate. Our sample contains orbital couples as well as binaries whose motion is still uncertain. The purpose of this long term program is to improve the accuracy of the orbits and determine the masses of the components. We performed 130 new observations of 120 objects, with most of the angular separations in the range 0″.1–4″, and with an average accuracy of 0″.01. Most of the position angles could be determined without the usual 180. ambiguity with the application of triple-correlation techniques, and their mean error is 0°8. We have found a possible new triple system: ADS 11077. The measurements of the closest binaries were made with a new data reduction procedure, based on model fitting of the background of the auto-correlations. As this procedure proved to be very efficient, we have re-processed the old observations of close binaries made with PISCO in Merate since 2004. We thus improved 20 measurements already published and obtained 7 new measurements for observations that were previously reported as “unresolved”. We finally present revised orbits for ADS 684, MCA 55Aac (in the Beta 1 Cyg–Albireo multiple system) and ADS 14783 for which the previously published orbits led to large residuals with our measurements and for which the new observations made since their computation allowed a significant improvement of those old orbits. The sum of the masses that we derived for those systems are consistent with the spectral type of the stars and the dynamic parallaxes are in good agreement with the parallaxes measured by Hipparcos. The purpose of this long-term programme is to improve the accuracy of the orbits and constrain the masses of the components. For the first time with PISCO, the astrometric calibration was made with a grating mask mounted at the entrance of the telescope. The advantage of this procedure is to provide a reliable and fully independent scale determination. We have found two possible new triple systems: ADS 7871 and KUI 15. We propose a preliminary orbit for ADS 4208.

We performed 207 new observations of 194 objects with angular separations in the range 0.1–4.0 arcsec and an accuracy better than ∼0.01 arcsec. Our sample contains orbital couples as well as binaries whose motion is still uncertain. Our purpose is to improve the accuracy of the orbits and constrain the masses of the components. Those measurements show that the orbit of ADS 15115 needs to be revised; we propose a new orbit for this object.

We present INCA, a prototype of a light and versatile camera covering the 1-5 microns wavelength range designed for ground based and space application. INCA has innovative optical solution such as aspherical mirrors obtained via ion-beam ablation, a new light cryogenic concept and a new philosophy of chip controller. Co-financed at the bread board level by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) INCA has been recently characterized and is now ready for a phase 2 development.

The XEUS mission (X-ray Evolving-Universe Spectroscopy Mission) is a future ESA project currently under study. With a mirror collecting area of up to 30 m 2 @ 1 keV and 3 m 2 @ 8 keV it will outperform the x-ray space observatories like XMM-Newton. In fact it will have a source flux sensitivity and angular resolution respectively 250 times and 7.5 times better if compared to that mission. This huge collecting area is obtained with a 10 m diameter telescope of 50 m focal length. It is foreseen that the whole telescope will be formed by two free flying satellites, one for the mirror assembly and the other for the detectors. The two satellites will be kept aligned by an active tracking/orbit control system. The angular resolution of the optics is set to 5 arcsec with a goal of 2 arcsec. Of course the requirement of high resolution and large diameter of the optics create new technological problems which have to be overcome. First of all the impossibility to create closed Wolter I shells (due to the large diameter) means that the optics will be assembled using rectangular segments of ~1 m x ~0.5 m size. A set of these segments will form a petal. The petals will be assembled to form the whole mirror assembly. Another difficulty arises from the fact that the current design foresees a mass/geometric-area ratio of 0.08 kg/cm 2 , which is very small and much lower compared with XMM-Newton. Hence the use of materials that can offer both low weight and high stiffness is mandatory. The impossibility to have a thermal control for the huge area of the optics means also that the mirrors have to operate at temperatures between -30 and -40°C. This requirement excludes the epoxy-replication method as option for their manufacturing (CTE mismatch between resin and substrate). Considering all these constrains a possible solution for the realization of the XEUS mirrors has been found that foresees the use of glass or ceramics materials. In this paper we will describe an investigation currently on-going aimed at the development of a procedure to produce large mirror segments from thin Borofloat glass and the preliminary results obtained, that corroborate the viability of the proposed approach. A previous article has introduced the basic ideas and concepts behind this investigation.

UVISS is a square aperture Ritchey-Chretien telescope of 45x45 cm designed for accommodation on the International Space Station. The designed field corrector can give a corrected field of view larger than that required by the project; the optical surface of the corrector will be figured using the ion beam figuring technique, with an expected extremely good optics quality. UVISS will employ multilayer coatings for imaging in the near UV (130 - 260 nm) and possibly also far UV (90 - 115 nm) bands.

The NASA's Constellation X-Ray Mission consists of a Soft X-Ray Telescope (SXT) based on large collecting area optics plus a focusing Hard X-Ray Telescope (HXT) operating between 8 and 70 keV and possibly at even higher energy. The Con-X HXT will have a focal length of 10 m and graze angles are small (0.25 - 0.1 deg). The substrates will be coated with multilayers to enhance the reflectivity but single heavy element coatings are an alternative for the small diameter substrates of the set. Twelve copies of the HXT are distributed evenly among the four Con-X spacecrafts. With multiple telescopes it is appropriate to consider electroforming, the replication process used successfully by Beppo-SAX, JET-X/SWIFT, and XMM-Newton, to produce their substrates. The important feature of the technique is that for mirrors with aperture diameters less than 40 cm also with thin substrates it is possible to achieve good angular resolution, which is important for obtaining high signal-to-noise ratios in deep observations and imaging extended sources. We review the main results of our development study devoted to proving the feasibility of the process for the Con-X/HXT, with particular stress on demonstrating, not only by theoretical considerations but also presenting an important experimental proof, that we can satisfy the severe mass constraints of the mission still maintaining good imaging capabilities.

The x-ray telescopes foreseen for future x-ray missions will need an high number of mirrors. Using for their production the replication method, an high number of mandrels will be necessary. A cost-effective approach that offers accurate control of the mandrels shape is the ion beam figuring. Using this procedure the aluminum-kanigen mandrels are initially optically figured by diamond turning or by other means, superpolished to the specified microroughness and then ion beam figured to the required shape. An ion beam facility has been built to test the concept. A small test mandrel has been measured obtaining the map of its surface. From this map and from the beam removal function of the ion head a time matrix has been computed to remove the shape errors. Using this time matrix as input to the program that control the movement of the ion head, the mandrel has been corrected from the errors. In this paper is given a description of the ion beam facility and the results obtained figuring the surface of the test mandrel.

For the next generation X-ray astronomy missions two main technological goals have to be achieved: (1) the possibility of making soft X-ray (0.1 - 10 keV) optics with much larger effective areas compared to the missions Chandra and XMM- Newton but still maintaining good angular resolution (better than 15 arcsec); (2) the extension of the use of focusing optics to the hard X-ray energy band (E equals 10 - 100 keV) by means of multilayer coating optics. The Brera Astronomical Observatory (Italy) is currently involved in technological development activities for the achievement of both these objectives. Concerning the realization of large diameter soft X-ray optics with low weight and good imaging capabilities, our efforts are devoted to the development of carriers made of ceramic materials like SiC and Alumina (Al2O3). The low density and the good mechanical parameters of these materials are very promising for this purpose. The technology for manufacturing hard X-ray optics based on multilayer mirrors, will be instead directly derived, with opportune modifications, from the replication process based on Nickel electroforming. This approach was already successfully used for the fabrication of the soft X-ray optics with Au coating of the Beppo-SAX, JET-X, SWIFT and XMM-Newton space experiments. In this case the use of Nickel instead of ceramics for the realization of the mirror carriers remains appropriate, due to the fact that, also for long focal length, hard X-ray telescopes are characterized by small diameters. Estimates of background in CZT detectorsi indicate that even with the beneficial concentration of a focussing telescope measurements in the 20 to 100 keV band of the Constellation X-ray Mission's HXT will become background limited after several thousand seconds of observing. This time is less than the expected exposure of most measurements. Consequently the sensitivity of most if not all observations of the HXT will be background limited. Therefore, the angular resolution should be as good as possible as long as the effective area remains high. We are pursuing a method for fabricating telescopes for thetwelve units of HXT that consists of electroforming integral shell substrates, a process that has been highly developed for XMM. We are attempting to adapt this method to higher energy X-rays by employing multilayer coatings, and smaller graze angles, and also reduce the mass of the telescopes from the XMM prescription by employing stronger, lighter alloys. The AdOptTNG module is an adaptive optics facility permanently mounted at the Nasmyth focus of the 4m-class Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). Its integration on the telescope started in late November 1998 and first-light of the speckle and tip-tilt modes took place shortly after. Both modes have been offered to the astronomical community and turned out to provide performances close to the expectations. Double stars with separation below 0.1 arcsec have been resolved by the speckle facility. Improvement of the Strehl ratio of a factor two and enhancement in the FWHM from 0.65 arcsec to 0.35 arcsec have been obtained on relatively faint reference stars. The high-speed low noise CCD, namely an 80 X 80 pixel read from the four corners, has been mounted and aligned with the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. A Xinetics mirror with 96 actuators has been calibrated against the wavefront sensor with on-board alignment fibers. This has been done using a modal approach and using Singular Value Decomposition in order to get a reliable interaction matrix. Filtering can be modal too, using a default integrative filter coupled with a limited FIR-fashioned technique. Open loop measurements on the sky provide data to establish open loop transfer functions and realistic estimates of limiting magnitude. High-order wavefront correction loop has been successfully tested on the sky. In this paper we give a description of the overall functionality of the module and of the procedure required to acquire targets to be used as reference in the correction. A brief overview of the very first astronomical results obtained so far on angular size and shape measurements of a few asteroids and sub-arcsec imaging of Planetary Nebulae and Herbig Haro objects is also given.

The pyramid wavefront sensor is a novel concept device whose features are attractive for adaptive optics for several reasons. We show here the first loop closure of an AO system using this kind of sensor at the focal plane of a 4m-class telescope. One of the critical optical elements of our wavefront sensor is the pyramid that splits the light from the star used for the wavefront correction. This component is essentially a four faces prism having actually a full vertex angle of 7 degrees with specifications on its edges and roof of 4 - 5 microns or better. The best turned edges obtained on the prototypes already built have shown values of the order of 6 microns, with roofs of the same order, not far from the required tolerances. In this article we describe the techniques and the system used for the construction of this optical component and the improvements to the polishing procedure that we plan to adopt in order to increase the quality of its edges and optical surfaces. Pixel processing is suitable to fit with existing Shack-Hartmann systems, making this device an attractive add-on option for existing SH-based AO systems. The plans for future developments in order to firmly establish the performances of the pyramid wavefront sensor are briefed out.
