We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form $Q$. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by $Q$. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We propose a novel procedure of assigning a pair of non-unitary topological quantum field theories (TQFTs), TFT$_\pm [\mathcal{T}_{\rm rank \;0}]$, to a (2+1)D interacting $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) $\mathcal{T}_{\rm rank \;0}$ of rank 0, i.e. having no Coulomb and Higgs branches. The topological theories arise from particular degenerate limits of the SCFT. Modular data of the non-unitary TQFTs are extracted from the supersymmetric partition functions in the degenerate limits. As a non-trivial dictionary, we propose that $F = \max_\alpha \left(- \log |S^{(+)}_{0\alpha}| \right) = \max_\alpha \left(- \log |S^{(-)}_{0\alpha}|\right)$, where $F$ is the round three-sphere free energy of $\mathcal{T}_{\rm rank \;0 }$ and $S^{(\pm)}_{0\alpha}$ is the first column in the modular S-matrix of TFT$_\pm$. From the dictionary, we derive the lower bound on $F$, $F \geq -\log \left(\sqrt{\frac{5-\sqrt{5}}{10}} \right) \simeq 0.642965$, which holds for any rank 0 SCFT. The bound is saturated by the minimal $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFT proposed by Gang-Yamazaki, whose associated topological theories are both the Lee-Yang TQFT. We study $\theta$ dependence of the vacuum energy for the 4d SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory by lattice numerical simulations. The response of topological excitations to the smearing procedure is investigated in detail, in order to extract topological information from smeared gauge configurations. We determine the first two coefficients in the $\theta$ expansion of the vacuum energy, the topological susceptibility $\chi$ and the first dimensionless coefficient $b_2$, in the continuum limit. We find consistency of the SU(2) results with the large $N$ scaling. By analytic continuing the number of colors, $N$, to non-integer values, we infer the phase diagram of the vacuum structure of SU(N) gauge theory as a function of $N$ and $\theta$. Based on the numerical results, we provide quantitative evidence that 4d SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at $\theta = \pi$ is gapped with spontaneous breaking of the CP symmetry., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures; v2: published version

We introduce a class of new algebras, the shifted quiver Yangians, as the BPS algebras for type IIA string theory on general toric Calabi-Yau three-folds. We construct representations of the shifted quiver Yangian from general subcrystals of the canonical crystal. We derive our results via equivariant localization for supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics for various framed quivers, where the framings are determined by the shape of the subcrystals. Our results unify many known BPS state counting problems, including open BPS counting, non-compact D4-branes, and wall crossing phenomena, simply as different representations of the shifted quiver Yangians. We find a new infinite class of infinite-dimensional algebras acting on BPS states for non-compact toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. In Type IIA superstring compactification on a toric Calabi-Yau threefold, the D-branes wrapping holomorphic cycles represent the BPS states, and the fixed points of the moduli spaces of BPS states are described by statistical configurations of crystal melting. Our algebras are "bootstrapped" from the molten crystal configurations, hence they act on the BPS states. We discuss the truncation of the algebra and its relation with D4-branes. Scalar weak gravity conjectures (SWGCs) attempt to pinpoint the ranges of couplings consistent with a fundamental theory of all interactions. We identify a generic dynamical consequence of these conjectures for cosmology and show that SWGCs imply a particular behavior of the scalar fields in the early universe. A scalar field that develops a large expectation value during inflation must relax to the minimum of effective potential at a later time. SWGCs imply that a homogeneous distribution of the field is unstable with respect to fragmentation into localized lumps, which could potentially lead to significant consequences for cosmology., 6 pages, 1 figure; v2: publication version

It has recently been shown that a center-twisted compactification of the four-dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a three-torus gives rise to the twodimensional ℂℙ N− 1-model on a circle with a flavor-twisted boundary condition. We verify the consistency of this statement non-perturbatively at theta angle θ = π, in terms of the mixed ’t Hooft anomalies for flavor symmetries and the time-reversal symmetry. This provides further support for the approach to the confinement of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from the two-dimensional ℂℙ N− 1-model.

We propose an extension of the recently-proposed volume conjecture for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, to all orders in perturbative expansion. We first derive formulas for the perturbative expansion of the partition function of complex Chern-Simons theory around a hyperbolic flat connection, which produces infinitely-many perturbative invariants of the closed oriented 3-manifold. The conjecture is that this expansion coincides with the perturbative expansion of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants at roots of unity $q=e^{2 \pi i/r}$ with $r$ odd, in the limit $r \to \infty$. Starting with a four-dimensional gauge theory approach to rational, elliptic, and trigonometric solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, we determine the corresponding quantum group deformations to all orders in $\hbar$ by deducing their RTT presentations. The arguments we give are a mix of familiar ones with reasoning that is more transparent from the four-dimensional gauge theory point of view. The arguments apply most directly for $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ and can be extended to all simple Lie algebras other than $\mathfrak{e}_8$ by taking into account the self-duality of some representations, the framing anomaly for Wilson operators, and the existence of quantum vertices at which several Wilson operators can end., Comment: 51 pp

During an accelerated expansion of the Universe, quantum fluctuations of sub-Planckian size can be stretched outside the horizon and be regarded effectively classical. Recently, it has been conjectured that such horizon-crossing of trans-Planckian modes never happens inside theories of quantum gravity (the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture, TCC). We point out several conceptual problems of this conjecture, which is in itself formulated as a statement on the restriction of possible scenarios in a theory: by contrast a standard swampland conjecture is a restriction of possible theories in the landscape of the quantum gravity. We emphasize the concept of swampland universality, i.e. that a swampland conjecture constrains any possible scenario in a given effective field theory. In order to illustrate the problems clearly we introduce several versions of the conjecture, where TCC condition is imposed differently to scenarios realizable in a given theory. We point out that these different versions of the conjecture lead to observable differences: a TCC violation in another Universe can exclude a theory, and such reduction of the landscape restricts possible predictions in our Universe. Our analysis raises the question of whether or not the trans-Planckian censorship conjecture can be regarded as a swampland conjecture concerning the existence of UV completion., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We study a perturbative expansion of the squashed 3-sphere ($S^3_b$) partition function of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories around the squashing parameter $b= 1$. Our proposal gives the coefficients of the perturbative expansion as a finite sum over the saddle points of the supersymmetric-localization integral in the limit $b \rightarrow 0$ (the so-called Bethe vacua), and the contribution from each Bethe vacua can be systematically computed using saddle-point methods. Our expansion provides an efficient and practical method for computing basic CFT data ($F,C_T,C_{JJ}$ and higher-point correlation functions of the stress-energy tensor) of the IR superconformal field theory without performing the localization integrals., Comment: 30 pages

It has recently pointed out that a four-dimensional analog of Chern-Simons theory provides an elegant framework for understanding integrable models with spectral parameters. The goal of this short note is to better understand the relation of this theory to the more standard three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory. We point out that two Chern-Simons theories, in four dimensions and three dimensions, are related by a novel T-duality in field theory. We then discuss this T-duality in string theory. Our T-duality prescription applies to a more general class of topological quantum field theories, producing mixed topological/holomorphic theories. This paper is motivated by the observation by C. We discuss phenomenological consequences of the recently-introduced refinements of the de Sitter swampland conjecture. The conjecture constraints the first and the second derivatives of the scalar potential in terms of two $O(1)$ constants $c$ and $c'$, leading to interesting constraints on particle phenomenology, especially inflationary model building. Our work can also be regarded as bottom-up constraints on the values of $c$ and $c'$., 6 pages, 5 figures

It has recently been suggested that "gravity is the weakest force" in any theory with a suitable UV completion within quantum gravity. One formulation of this statement is the scalar weak gravity conjecture, which states that gravity is weaker than the force originating from scalar fields. We study the scalar weak gravity conjecture in de Sitter space, and discuss its low-energy consequences in light of the experimental searches for fifth forces and violations of the equivalence principle. We point out that some versions of the scalar weak gravity conjecture forbid the existence of very light scalar particles, such as the quintessence and axion-like particles. The absence of the quintessence field means that these versions of the scalar weak gravity conjecture are in phenomenological tension with the recently-proposed de Sitter swampland conjecture and its refinements. Some other versions of the scalar weak gravity conjecture escape these constraints, and could have interesting phenomenological consequences., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

A low-energy effective theory is said to be in the swampland if it does not have any consistent UV completion inside a theory of quantum gravity. The natural question is if the standard model of particle physics, possibly with some minimal extensions, are in the swampland or not. We discuss this question in view of the recent swampland conjectures. We prove a no-go theorem concerning the modification of the Higgs sector. Moreover, we find that QCD axion is incompatible with the recent swampland conjectures, unless some sophisticated possibilities are considered. We discuss the implications of this result for spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry. The Gauge/YBE correspondence states a surprising connection between solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation with spectral parameters and partition functions of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. This correspondence has lead to systematic discoveries of new integrable models based on quantum-field-theory methods. We conjecture infrared emergent $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry for a class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(1)$ gauge theories coupled with a single chiral multiplet. One example is the case where $U(1)$ gauge group has the Chern-Simons level $-\frac{3}2$ and the chiral multiplet has gauge charge $+1$. Other examples are related to this example either by known dualities or rescaling the Abelian gauge field. We give three independent evidences for the conjecture: 1) exact match between the central charges of the $U(1)$ R-symmetry current and the $U(1)$ topological symmetry current, 2) semi-classical construction of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ stress-tensor multiplet, and 3) an IR duality between a direct product of the two copies of the 3d theory on the one hand, and an $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory obtained by gauging the diagonal $SU(2)$ flavor symmetry of the $T[SU(2)]$ theory, on the other. We point out that the swampland conjectures, forbidding the presence of global symmetries and (meta-)stable de Sitter vacua within quantum gravity, pick up a dynamical axion for the electroweak SU(2) gauge theory as a natural candidate for the quintessence field. The potential energy of the electroweak axion provides an attractive candidate for the dark energy. We define "BPS graphs" on punctured Riemann surfaces associated with $A_{N-1}$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$. BPS graphs provide a bridge between two powerful frameworks for studying the spectrum of BPS states: spectral networks and BPS quivers. They arise from degenerate spectral networks at maximal intersections of walls of marginal stability on the Coulomb branch. While the BPS spectrum is ill-defined at such intersections, a BPS graph captures a useful basis of elementary BPS states. The topology of a BPS graph encodes a BPS quiver, even for higher-rank theories and for theories with certain partial punctures. We consider 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loops in a class of 5d superconformal field theories on S^5. The large N limit of the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops are computed both by localization in the field theory and by evaluating the fundamental string and D4-brane actions in the dual massive IIA supergravity background. We find agreement in the leading large N limit for a rather general class of representations, including fundamental, anti-symmetric and symmetric representations. For single node theories the match is straightforward, while for quiver theories, the Wilson loop can be in different representations for each node. We highlight the two special cases when the Wilson loop is in either in all symmetric or all anti-symmetric representations. In the anti-symmetric case, we find that the vacuum expectation value factorizes into distinct contributions from each quiver node. In the dual supergravity description, this corresponds to probe D4-branes wrapping internal S^3 cycles. The story is more complicated in the symmetric case and the vacuum expectation value does not exhibit factorization.

We propose a new generalization of the Yang-Baxter equation, where the R-matrix depends on cluster $y$-variables in addition to the spectral parameters. We point out that we can construct solutions to this new equation from the recently-found correspondence between Yang-Baxter equations and supersymmetric gauge theories. The $S^2$ partition function of a certain 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ quiver gauge theory gives an R-matrix, whereas its FI parameters can be identified with the cluster $y$-variables., 13 pages, 4 figures

In this paper we study supersymmetric co-dimension 2 and 4 defects in the compactification of the 6d $(2,0)$ theory of type $A_{N-1}$ on a 3-manifold $M$. The so-called 3d-3d correspondence is a relation between complexified Chern-Simons theory (with gauge group $SL(N, \mathbb{C})$) on $M$ and a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory $T_{N}[M]$. We establish a dictionary for this correspondence in the presence of supersymmetric defects, which are knots/links inside the 3-manifold. Our study employs a number of different methods: state-integral models for complex Chern-Simons theory, cluster algebra techniques, domain wall theory $T[SU(N)]$, 5d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM, and also supergravity analysis through holography. These methods are complementary and we find agreement between them. In some cases the results lead to highly non-trivial predictions on the partition function. Our discussion includes a general expression for the cluster partition function, in particular for non-maximal punctures and $N>2$. We also highlight the non-Abelian description of the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $T_N[M]$ theory with defect included, as well as its Higgsing prescription and the resulting `refinement' in complex CS theory. We point out that the determinant formula for a parabolic Verma module plays a key role in the study of (super)conformal field theories and in particular their (super)conformal blocks. The determinant formula is known from the old work of Jantzen for bosonic conformal algebras, and we present a conjecture for superconformal algebras. One interesting feature of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories is that gauge-invariant operators can decouple by strong-coupling effects, leading to emergent flavor symmetries in the IR. The details of such decoupling, however, depends very delicately on the gauge group and matter content of the theory. We here systematically study the IR behavior of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD with $N_f$ flavors, for gauge groups $\mathrm{SU}(N_c), \mathrm{USp}(2N_c)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(N_c)$. We apply a combination of analytical and numerical methods, both to small values of $N_c, N_f$ and also to the Veneziano limit, where $N_c$ and $N_f$ are taken to be large with their ratio $N_f/N_c$ fixed. We highlight the role of the monopole operators and the interplay with Aharony-type dualities. We also discuss the effect of gauging continuous as well as discrete flavor symmetries, and the implications of our analysis to the classification of $1/4$--BPS co-dimension 2 defects of 6d $(2,0)$ theories.

We propose a generalization of the topological vertex, which we call the "non-commutative topological vertex". This gives open BPS invariants for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold without compact 4-cycles, where we have D0/D2/D6-branes wrapping holomorphic 0/2/6-cycles, as well as D2-branes wrapping disks whose boundaries are on D4-branes wrapping non-compact Lagrangian 3-cycles. The vertex is defined combinatorially using the crystal melting model proposed recently, and depends on the value of closed string moduli at infinity. The vertex in one special chamber gives the same answer as that computed by the ordinary topological vertex. We prove an identify expressing the non-commutative topological vertex of a toric Calabi-Yau manifold X as a specialization of the closed BPS partition function of an orbifold of X, thus giving a closed expression for our vertex. We also clarify the action of the Weyl group of an affine A_L Lie algebra on chambers, and comment on the generalization of our results to the case of refined BPS invariants., 33 pages, 10 figures

The relation between brane charge conservation law in fivebrane system described by orientifolded brane tilings and the gauge anomaly cancellation in the corresponding gauge theories is summarized.

We discuss a discretization of the quantum Toda field theory associated with a semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebra or a tamely-laced infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebra $G$, generalizing the previous construction of discrete quantum Liouville theory for the case $G=A_1$. The model is defined on a discrete two-dimensional lattice, whose spatial direction is of length $L$. In addition we also find a "discretized extra dimension" whose width is given by the rank $r$ of $G$, which decompactifies in the large $r$ limit. For the case of $G=A_N$ or $A_{N-1}^{(1)}$, we find a symmetry exchanging $L$ and $N$ under appropriate spatial boundary conditions. The dynamical time evolution rule of the model is a quantizations of the so-called Y-system, and the theory can be well-described by the quantum cluster algebra. We study the relation between exactly marginal deformations in a large class of N=1 superconformal quiver gauge theories described by brane tilings and the degrees of freedom in the corresponding 5-brane systems. We show, with the help of NSVZ exact beta functions, that there are generically d-1 complex exactly marginal deformations of a gauge theory, where d is the perimeter of the corresponding n it, and the other two, the diagonal gauge coupling and a beta-like deformation, as background supergravity fields.toric diagram. We consider asymptotically-free four-dimensional large-$N$ gauge theories with massive fermionic and bosonic adjoint matter fields, compactified on squashed three-spheres, and examine their regularized large-$N$ confined-phase spectral sums. The analysis is done in the limit of vanishing 't Hooft coupling, which is justified by taking the size of the compactification manifold to be small compared to the inverse strong scale $\Lambda^{-1}$. We study knots in 3d Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$, in the context of its relation with 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory (the so-called 3d-3d correspondence). The defect has either co-dimension 2 or co-dimension 4 inside the 6d $(2,0)$ theory, which is compactified on a 3-manifold $\hat{M}$. We identify such defects in various corners of the 3d-3d correspondence, namely in 3d $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory, in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory, in 5d $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theory, and in the M-theory holographic dual. We can make quantitative checks of the 3d-3d correspondence by computing partition functions at each of these theories. We point out the presence of a $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{-}T$ temperature-reflection ($T$-reflection) symmetry for the partition functions of many physical systems. Without knowledge of the origin of the symmetry, we have only been able to test the existence of $T$-reflection symmetry in systems with exactly calculable partition functions. We show that $T$-reflection symmetry is present in a variety of conformal and nonconformal field theories and statistical mechanics models with known partition functions. For example, all minimal model partition functions in two-dimensional conformal field theories are invariant under $T$-reflections. An interesting property of the $T$-reflection symmetry is that it can be broken by shifts of the vacuum energy.

We study the root of unity limit of the lens elliptic gamma function solution of the star-triangle relation, for an integrable model with continuous and discrete spin variables. This limit involves taking an elliptic nome to a primitive $rN$-th root of unity, where $r$ is an existing integer parameter of the lens elliptic gamma function, and $N$ is an additional integer parameter. This is a singular limit of the star-triangle relation, and at subleading order of an asymptotic expansion, another star-triangle relation is obtained for a model with discrete spin variables in $\mathbb{Z}_{rN}$. Some special choices of solutions of equation of motion are shown to result in well-known discrete spin solutions of the star-triangle relation. The saddle point equations themselves are identified with three-leg forms of "3D-consistent" classical discrete integrable equations, known as $Q4$ and $Q3_{(\delta=0)}$. In the context of conformal field theories in general space-time dimension, we find all the possible singularities of the conformal blocks as functions of the scaling dimension $\Delta$ of the exchanged operator. In particular, we argue, using representation theory of parabolic Verma modules, that in odd spacetime dimension the singularities are only simple poles. We discuss how to use this information to write recursion relations that determine the conformal blocks. We first recover the recursion relation introduced in 1307.6856 for conformal blocks of external scalar operators. We then generalize this recursion relation for the conformal blocks associated to the four point function of three scalar and one vector operator. Four-dimensional asymptotically-free large $N$ gauge theories compactified on $S^3_R \times \mathbb{R}$ have a weakly-coupled confining regime when $R$ is small compared to the strong scale. We compute the vacuum energy of a variety of confining large $N$ non-supersymmetric gauge theories in this calculable regime, where the vacuum energy can be thought of as the $S^3$ Casimir energy. We consider N = 4 $$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ supersymmetric Yang Mills theory on a space with supersymmetry preserving boundary conditions. The boundaries preserving half of the 16 supercharges were analyzed and classified in an earlier work by Gaiotto and Witten. We extend that analysis to the case with fewer supersymmetries, concentrating mainly on the case preserving one quarter. We develop tools necessary to explicitly construct boundary conditions which can be viewed as taking the zero slope limit of a system of D3 branes intersecting and ending on a collection of NS5 and D5 branes oriented to preserve the appropriate number of supersymmetries. We analyze how these boundary conditions constrain the bulk degrees of freedom and enumerate the unconstrained degrees of freedom from the boundary/defect field theory point of view. The key ingredients used in the analysis are a generalized version of Nahm’s equations and the explicit boundary/interface conditions for the NS5-like and D5-like impurities and boundaries, which we construct and describe in detail. Some bulk degrees of freedom suggested by the naive brane diagram considerations are lifted.

We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper arXiv:1404.5527. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

In particular, we obtain the deformed Graßmannian integral for 4d N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, both in momentum and momentum-twistor space. For 3d ABJM theory, we initiate the study of deformed scattering amplitudes. We investigate general deformations of on-shell diagrams, and find the deformed Graßmannian integral for this theory. We propose a new description of 3d theories which do not admit conventional Lagrangians. Given a quiver and a mutation sequence on it, we define a 3d theory in such a way that the partition function of the theory coincides with the cluster partition function defined from the pair . Our formalism includes the case where 3d theories arise from the compactification of the 6d theory on a large class of 3-manifolds , including complements of arbitrary links in . In this case the quiver is defined from a 2d ideal triangulation, the mutation sequence represents an element of the mapping class group, and the 3-manifold is equipped with a canonical ideal triangulation. Our partition function then coincides with that of the holomorphic part of the ChernSimons partition function on .

We discuss some of the analytic properties of lens space indices for 4d N=2 theories of class S. The S-duality properties of these theories highly constrain the lens space indices, and imply in particular that they are naturally acted upon by a set of commuting difference operators corresponding to surface defects. We explicitly identify the difference operators to be a matrix-valued generalization of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. In a special limit these difference operators can be expressed naturally in terms of Cherednik operators appearing in the double affine Hecke algebras, with the eigenfunctions given by non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials.
