Abstract

The decay rates of K L → 2γ and K S → 2γ have been measured at the CERN SPS. The results are Γ (K L →2 γ )/ χ (K L →2 π 0 )=0.632±0.004±0.008 and Γ (K S →2 γ )/ Γ (K L →2 γ )=2.3 ±1.0±0.4. This is the first observation of K S →2γ decays.

Abstract

Inelastic scattering of 84 MeV/u 17 O projectiles has been used to excite the giant resonances (GR) in 232 Th. The deduced parameters (width, energy, EWSR) of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance are in agreement with the known systematics. The observed giant monopole resonance strength, 100% of the EWSR, is consistent with other recent experimental results using heavy-ion projectiles. Strength is also observed at high excitation energy. The fission probability of GR in 232 Th has been measured by detecting the fission fragments in coincidence with the inelastically scattered particles. A structure is observed in the fission coincidence spectrum around 10 MeV, which can be attributed to the fission decay of giant resonances. The measured fission probability is consistent with statistical decay of the GQR.

Abstract

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 1435 MeV 17O ions on 208Pb, 120Sn, 90Zr and 60Ni have been measured. Hindrance in the excitation of the first 3− states is observed. Parameters of the isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances are obtained. The quadrupole resonance exhausts ∼ 55% of the energy-weighted sum rule while the observed monopole resonance corresponds to more than 100% of the sum rule. Strength is also observed at high excitation energy in all targets.

Abstract

The reaction (13C, 13N) has been studied at 50 MeV/u on a set of nuclear targets including 12C, 40Ca, 58,60Ni, 90Zr, 120Sn and 208Pb. Excitation of ΔT2 = 1 giant dipole resonance has been observed in light nuclei (A⩽ 60) and corresponding angular distribution have been measured. A broad structure is observed at excitation energy above the GDR in nuclei with A⩾ 60. Angular-distribution measurements of elastic-scattering cross sections are also reported on 12C and 58Ni, as well as excitation of low-lying states in 12B. Microscopic DWBA analysis of the results is presented. Some results on the (13C, 13B) reaction are also presented.

The article looks back on the 183 workshops and briefing sessions of the 15 annual UKSG conferences from 1990 to 2004. The content of this particular form of professional training reflects the development of the professional environment, interests and activities of librarians, especially the emergence of the digital library. Nine major subjects of information and debate are identified: human resource management, new software, acquisition of e-serials, legal aspects, emerging standards, usage statistics, library/vendor relationship, document delivery, and publishing. An analysis of attendance and some remarks on specific features of the sessions complete this “historical study”.

Abstract

Inclusive energy spectra and cross sections of reaction products close to the14N projectile (11C,12C,13C,15N and15O) have been measured in the angular rangeθL =1.2°–4.2° at an incident energy of 60 MeV/u for five different target nuclei (12C,27Al,58Ni,90Zr and208Pb). Two components are found to be systematically present in the energy spectra of the carbon isotopes, the first similar to that observed at relativistic energies and the second shifted down in energy characteristic for a very dissipative process. The dependence of the differential and integrated cross sections on the target mass indicates that the two-body final channels (14N,13C), (14N,15N) and (14N,15O) are strongly correlated to the fragmentation channels.

Abstract

The differential cross section of the reactionγ+p→π+ was measured at pion CM-angles of 20° and 30° for photon energies between 500 MeV and 1,400 MeV. The pions were detected in a magnetic spectrometer. By measuring each pion trajectory and by offline calculation of the initial pion parameters an energy resolution of about 2.5% FWHM was achieved. The results complete a set of data which were measured in recent years at the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron. In comparison to photoproduction analyses two effects were revealed: The η cusp appears in the energy dependence of the cross section as a sharp drop atKγ=710 MeV. In the region of the third resonance the data show a greater enhancement than predicted by most of the analyses.

Abstract

Since CP violation was first observed in the decay of the long-lived neutral kaon into two pions [1], it remains one of the enigmas in particle physics. Whilst CP violation is manifest in neutral kaon decays, the search for CP-violating effects has elsewhere been unsuccessful. In the phenomenology of CP violation in the neutral kaon system [2], the short- and long-lived mass eigenstates are usually defined in terms of the CP eigenstates K1 (CP = + 1) and K2 (CP = - 1) as Ks ≈ K1 + ?K2 and KL ≈ K2 + ?K1. The parameter ? describes CP violation induced by kaon state-mixing. Direct CP violation may also occur in the decay of K2 into two pions with a relative amplitude ?′, which is non-zero in the case of a phase difference between the amplitudes A0 and A2 for the decay into isospin O and 2 states of two pions. Before the present measurement, all experimental results were compatible with ? = 2.27 × 10-3 exp (i 43.70) and with the Superweak Model [3], in which state-mixing is the only source of CP violation and ?′ = 0. In the Standard Model with six weakly interacting quarks [4], direct CP violation as well as state-mixing is introduced by transitions via heavy-quark intermediate states. Based on this, a small, but non-zero, value of ?′ is predicted [5]. To a good approximation, ?′ /? is related to the double ratio R of the relative decay rates of the long- and short-lived neutral kaons into two neutral and two charged pions as Re (?′/?) = 1/6 × (1 - R).

Abstract

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron synchrotron we have measured the differential cross section of the reaction γp→π0p at a pion CM angle of 170° and at photon energiesKγ between 0.6 and 1.8 GeV. In comparison to previous measurements the accuracy of the data was improved substantially. For the first time in neutral pion photoproduction a cusp structure at the η-threshold has been confirmed [1].

Abstract

A large area detector consisting of a parallel plate avalanche counter (PPAC) and a trapezohedral ionization chamber (TIC) is described. Its active area is 184 cm 2 . The time resolution of the PPAC is 175 ps. The energy resolution of the TIC is 0.4%, the energy loss resolution 2.8%, the nuclear charge resolution 2.3%. The TIC is position sensitive in three dimensions. The position x is measured via a saw-tooth anode with a resolution of 0.7 mm; the drift time coordinate shows a resolution of δy ≅ mm. The range z is determined by a new technique, a graded density Frisch grid. It enlarges the dynamic range of the charge measurement down to the Bragg maximum at E / A ∼ 1 MeV. The resolution is δZ / Z ≅ 3.5%

Abstract

Two- and three-nucleon stripping reactions induced by 480 MeV /sup 12/C have been studied on /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, /sup 28/Si, /sup 40/Ca, and /sup 54/Fe target nuclei. Discrete levels are fed with cross sections up to 1 mbsr for d-transfer reactions and 1 order and 2 orders of magnitude less for 2p- and /sup 3/He-transfer reactions, respectively. These reactions preferentially populate high spin states with stretched configurations. Several spin assignments were known from transfer reactions induced by lighter projectiles at incident energies well above the Coulomb barrier. In the case of two-nucleon transfer reactions, the energy of these states is well reproduced by crude shell model calculations. Such estimates are of use in proposing spins of newly observed states especially as the shapes of the measured angular distributions are independent of the final spin of the residual nucleus.

Abstract

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron the polarization of the Λ0 was measured at 40° and 90° for three energies. The kaon was detected with a strong focussing magnetic spectrometer and separated from other particles with the help of a differential liquid Cerenkov counter. The polarization was determined by means of the angular distribution of the decay proton which was measured with a combination of sonic spark chambers and a scintillation counter hodoscope. The typical statistical errors are about 13%. The systematic errors add up to 8%.

Abstract

Studying the reaction γ d → pp π − , a narrow resonance structure in the pp invariant mass distribution has been observed at 2014 ± 2 MeV/ c 2 with a statistical significance of 4.7 standard deviations. Using a bremsstrahlung photon beam ( k 0 = 520 MeV), the kinematics of the reaction were completely determined by detecting both outgoing protons in two large solid angle time-of-flight spectrometers. By accepting only proton momenta greater than ∼300 MeV/ c , the predominant contribution from quasi-free pion production was suppressed.

Charge exchange reactions induced by 12C and 13C are discussed on a 12C target nucleus. Comparison of cross sections for the population of dicrete states and of the continuum gives information which determines the selectivity of these reactions with respect to various modes with and without spin-flip.

Abstract

The Charge exchange reaction 12 C( 12 C, 12 N) 12 B has been studied at 30 and 70 MeV/u in order to investigate the energy dependence of the two reaction mechanisms involved: the direct charge exchange and the proton-neutron exchange. Microscopic calculations have been performed for both processes and an almost quantitative description of the data could be achieved. The p-n exchange is strong at low energies and has a maximum at about 30 MeV/u. The direct process dominates for all states only at energies well above 100 MeV/u, but the energy region for the transition from two-step to direct dominance is strongly state dependent.

Abstract

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron synchrotron the angular distribution of the target asymmetry T = (σ↑ − σ↓) (σ↑ + σ↓) for the reaction γp↑ → π+n was measured at a mean photon energy of 700 MeV and pion CM-angles from 50° to 155°. The combination of a 3He-cryostat, polarizing the free protons in the target up to 65%, with a large acceptance magnet for pion detection led to statistical errors of the target asymmetry comparable with those of cross section measurements.

Velocity distributions and excitation functions of fusionlike evaporation residues (ER) were measured for 41–216 MeV 19 F + 40 Ca and 142–393 MeV 32 S + 27 Al . The ER cross sections for 19 F + 40 Ca exceed those of 32 S + 27 Al by up to 44%, mainly due to an earlier onset of incomplete fusion of about 3.7 MeV/nucleon above the interaction barrier in 19 F + 40 Ca , compared to 5.6–7.7 MeV/nucleon in 32 S + 27 Al .

Abstract

The reaction γ d → pp π − has been studied in order to investigate whether dibaryon resonances contribute to the cross section in the invariant mass region from 2.16 to 2.32 GeV/ c 2 . Using a bremsstrahlung photon beam we have determined the invariant mass M ppπ by detecting both outgoing protons in large solid angle TOF spectrometers, thus achieving a statistical accuracy of 1 to 2% per 2.5 MeV/ c 2 bin, a mean invariant mass resolution of 4.4 MeV/ c 2 (σ) and a smooth M ppπ acceptance. Despite the resulting high resonance sensitivity no evidence for a dibaryon resonance in the M ppπ distribution was found. Assuming an isotropic phase space decay we estimate the upper limit for the dibaryon resonance cross section to be 1μb for masses around 2.23 GeV/ c 2 and resonance widths between 5 and 40 GeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

One-proton and one-neutron stripping reactions induced by a 480 MeV $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ beam bombarding a $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target have been studied using a high resolution energy loss magnetic spectrometer. The reactions are governed by two selection rules which are naturally contained in the one-step exact finite range distorted wave Born approximation formalism. Relative intensities of the populated states are well reproduced by this formalism as well as the absolute values of the cross sections. Comparisons with the results of one-nucleon stripping reactions induced by a $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ beam on a $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target at 793 MeV incident energy are also presented; in this latter case the absolute cross section values are not reproduced.

Abstract

The differential cross section of the deuteron photodisintegration was measured at a protion c.m. angle of 180 degrees and for photon energies between 180 and 730 MeV. The protons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer. The proton energy resolution varied between 30 MeV and 50 MeV FWHM. Since these are the first data at 180 degrees in this energy range a comparison can only be done with data from other laboratories extrapolated to 180 degrees and with theoretical predictions. The agreement with existing calculations is poor. Contributions of dibaryons to the cross section seem not to improve the situation.

Aus einer einjahrigen Me\reihe der Intensitat der Hohenstrahlung ergibt sich eine jahrliche Schwankung im Gesamtbetrag von 2,9% der mittleren Intensitat. Ein Vergleich mit anderweitigen Beobachtungen zeigt, da\ die Amplitude der monatlichen Intensitatsmittel mit der geographischen Breite vom aquator zu den Polen wachst. Die Erscheinung kann als Temperatureffekt gedeutet werden. Aus dem Temperaturkoeffizienten wird die mittlere freie WeglInge der Mesotronen zu 25 km bestimmt.

Abstract

We have searched for the sequence of decays K L 0 → π 0 H 0 and H 0 →e + e − at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), and have allowed for a non-zero H 0 lifetime. Three candidates have been seen, consistent with an expected background of 3.3. Limits on the branching ratio product in the range 10 −8 –10 −7 are presented as a function of the mass and lifetime of the H 0 . These can be used to restrict the neutral Higgs of the minimal standard model.

Abstract

One-proton and one-neutron stripping reactions induced by a 793 MeV16O beam bombarding a208Pb target have been studied at the GANIL facility using a high resolution energy loss magnetic spectrometer. The reactions are governed by two semi classical selection rules which are naturally contained in the one-step EFR-DWBA formalism. Relative intensities of the populated states are well reproduced by this formalism which, on the other hand, fails to predict correctly absolute cross section values.

Abstract

The K0 beam and detector used for a high-precision measurement of the CP-violation parameter ϵ′ at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are described. The beam provides KL and KS alternately through a common decay region. The detection of the decays is based on wire chambers and calorimeters without employing a magnet. The trigger and readout system achieve a high selectively for the suppressed, CP-violating, two-pion decays of the KL by incorporation of hard-wired processors. The readout is based on Fastbus for maximum data rates.
