Abstract

International audience; X-ray free-electron lasers1, 2 delivering up to 1 × 1013 coherent photons in femtosecond pulses are bringing about a revolution in X-ray science3, 4, 5. However, some plasma-based soft X-ray lasers6 are attractive because they spontaneously emit an even higher number of photons (1 × 1015), but these are emitted in incoherent and long (hundreds of picoseconds) pulses7 as a consequence of the amplification of stochastic incoherent self-emission. Previous experimental attempts to seed such amplifiers with coherent femtosecond soft X-rays resulted in as yet unexplained weak amplification of the seed and strong amplification of incoherent spontaneous emission8. Using a time-dependent Maxwell–Bloch model describing the amplification of both coherent and incoherent soft X-rays in plasma, we explain the observed inefficiency and propose a new amplification scheme based on the seeding of stretched high harmonics using a transposition of chirped pulse amplification to soft X-rays. This scheme is able to deliver 5 × 1014 fully coherent soft X-ray photons in 200 fs pulses and with a peak power of 20 GW.

Abstract

Context. Protoplanetary disks around young stars often contain substructures like rings, gaps, and spirals that could be caused by interactions between the disk and forming planets. Aims. We aim to study the young (1-3 Myr) star DR Tau in the near-infrared and characterize its disk, which was previously resolved through sub-millimeter interferometry with ALMA, and to search for possible sub-stellar companions embedded into it. Methods. We observed DR Tau with VLT/SPHERE both in polarized light (H broad band) and total intensity (in Y, J, H, and K spectral bands). We also performed L' band observations with LBTI/LMIRCam on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Results. We found two previously undetected spirals extending north-east and south of the star, respectively. We further detected an arc-like structure north of the star. Finally a bright, compact and elongated structure was detected at separation of 303 +/- 10 mas and position angle 21.2 +/- 3.7 degrees, just at the root of the north-east spiral arm. Since this feature is visible both in polarized light and in total intensity and has a flat spectrum it is likely caused by stellar light scattered by dust. Conclusions. The two spiral arms are at different separation from the star, have very different pitch angles, and are separated by an apparent discontinuity, suggesting they might have a different origin. The very open southern spiral arm might be caused by infalling material from late encounters with cloudlets into the formation environment of the star itself. The compact feature could be caused by interaction with a planet in formation still embedded in its dust envelope and it could be responsible for launching the north-east spiral. We estimate a mass of the putative embedded object of the order of few M_Jup ., 13 pages, 11 Figures. Accepted for publications on A&A

Abstract

International audience; Optische Strahlen mit Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) sind ein sehr aktives Forschungsfeld für ihre prospektiven Anwendungen, insbesondere bei kurzen Wellenlängen. Wir betrachten hier solche Strahlen, die durch hochharmonische Erzeugung (HHG) in einem seltenen Gas erzeugt werden, und analysieren die Charakterisierung ihrer Hochladungs-Wirbelstruktur durch einen EUV (Extreme UltraViolet) Hartmann-Wellenfrontsensor. Wir zeigen, dass solche HHG-Strahlen in der Regel aus einer Reihe von zahlreichen Vortex-Modi bestehen. Die Empfindlichkeit der Intensität und Phase des HHG-Strahls auf die infraroten (IR) Laseraberrationen wird mit einem deformierbaren Spiegel untersucht.; Optical beams carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) are a very active field of research for their prospective applications, especially at short wavelengths. We consider here such beams produced through high-harmonic generation (HHG) in a rare gas and analyze the characterization of their high charge vortex structure by an EUV (Extreme UltraViolet) Hartmann wavefront sensor. We show that such HHG beams are generally composed of a set of numerous vortex modes. The sensitivity of the intensity and phase of the HHG beam to the infrared (IR) laser aberrations is investigated using a deformable mirror.; Les faisceaux optiques portant un Moment Angulaire Orbital (OAM) font l'objet de recherches très actives,en raison de l'intérêt de leurs applications potentielles, particulièrement à courtes longueurs d'onde. Nous nous intéressons ici à des faisceaux produits par Génération d'Harmoniques d'Ordre Elevé (HOE) dans un gaz rare, et analysons la structure du vortex de haute charge grâce à la caractérisation complète obtenue par un capteur de front d'onde de type Hartmann dans l'Extrême UltraViolet (EUV). Nous montrons que ces faisceaux HOE sont généralement constitués d'un ensemble de nombreux modes de vortex. Un miroir déformable nous permet d'étudier la sensibilité de l'éclairement et de la phase du faisceau HOE vis à vis des aberrations du laser infrarouge (IR).

Abstract

For an atomic state with two electrons missing from different core orbitals one may assume that the deeper hole decays first. However, it is quite probable that the double core-hole state will decay by emission of a slow Auger electron where the deeper core hole remains a spectator, especially if the outer core hole can be filled by Coster-Kronig transition, while the deeper cannot. We study here the competition of both Auger decay channels in a model system, the $1s2s2{p}^{6}(3s/3p)$ states of $\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{e}}^{+}$ ions. As the phenomenon can take place in any decay chain involving multiple core-excited states it can be critical to understand the ion yields, the electron and x-ray emission spectra, and the molecular fragmentation.

Abstract

We present observations of the Herbig Ae star HD169142 with VLT/SPHERE instruments InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) ($K1K2$ and $H2H3$ bands) and the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) ($Y$, $J$ and $H$ bands). We detect several bright blobs at $\sim$180 mas separation from the star, and a faint arc-like structure in the IFS data. Our reference differential imaging (RDI) data analysis also finds a bright ring at the same separation. We show, using a simulation based on polarized light data, that these blobs are actually part of the ring at 180 mas. These results demonstrate that the earlier detections of blobs in the $H$ and $K_S$ bands at these separations in Biller et al. as potential planet/substellar companions are actually tracing a bright ring with a Keplerian motion. Moreover, we detect in the images an additional bright structure at $\sim$93 mas separation and position angle of 355$^{\circ}$, at a location very close to previous detections. It appears point-like in the $YJ$ and $K$ bands but is more extended in the $H$ band. We also marginally detect an inner ring in the RDI data at $\sim$100 mas. Abstract

We present a catalog of sources detected above 10 GeV by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in the first 7 years of data using the Pass 8 event-level analysis. This is the Third Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (3FHL), containing 1556 objects characterized in the 10 GeV - 2 TeV energy range. The sensitivity and angular resolution are improved by factors of 3 and 2 relative to the previous LAT catalog at the same energies (1FHL). The vast majority of detected sources (79%) are associated with extragalactic counterparts at other wavelengths, including 16 sources located at very high redshift ($z>2$). Eight percent of the sources have Galactic counterparts and 13% are unassociated (or associated with a source of unknown nature). The high-latitude sky and the Galactic plane are observed with a flux sensitivity of 4.4 to 9.5$\times 10^{-11}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, respectively (this is approximately 0.5% and 1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 10 GeV). The catalog includes 214 new $\gamma$-ray sources. The substantial increase in the number of photons (more than 4 times relative to 1FHL and 10 times to 2FHL) also allows us to measure significant spectral curvature for 32 sources and find flux variability for 163 of them. Furthermore, we estimate that for the same flux limit of $10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, the energy range above 10 GeV has twice as many sources as above 50 GeV, highlighting the importance, for future Cherenkov telescopes, of lowering the energy threshold as much as possible., Comment: Accepted by ApJS. Abstract

International audience; We present the status of optical field ionization soft X-ray lasers. The amplifying medium is generated by focusing a high-energy circularly polarized 30-fs 10-Hz Ti: sapphire laser system in a gaseous medium. Using xenon or krypton, strong laser emission at 41.8 and 32.8 nm, respectively, has been observed. After presenting the basis of the physics, we present recent characterization of the sources as well as dramatic improvement of their performances using the waveguiding technique.

An inertial regime of the magnetization dynamics has been predicted. We study numerically the corresponding equation in the frequency domain. It is shown that inertial terms generate a second resonance peak of the magnetic susceptibility, which corresponds to the nutation frequency. The interplay between precession and nutation is investigated.

Abstract

The spectral width of a Ni-like silver transient soft X-ray laser (4d-4p λ= 13.9 nm) was experimentally inferred from the measurement of its temporal coherence, performed with a novel wavefront division interferometer. The measured coherence time of 3 ps corresponds to a spectral linewidth of 0.7 mA which is narrow. We compare this experimental result to numerical simulations of the amplified line profile, performed along two different approaches. Both calculations predict a spectral linewidth that is about 3 times larger than the experimental value. We discuss several effects that might explain this discrepancy. We show that, due to the short duration of the X-ray laser pulse, the assumption of a stationary electromagnetic field used in both the experimental analysis and in the calculations need to be reconsidered.

Abstract

Beam sections of transient collisional excitation (TCE) soft X-ray lasers exhibit highly contrasted intensity modulations forming complex patterns. We present model calculations that reproduce these experimental observations both qualitatively and quantitatively. The low spatial coherence, high longitudinal coherence and short pulse duration of the source are shown to control the visibility of the beam structures. Comparison with other types of laser-based soft X-ray lasers is discussed. We derive simple relationships that relate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the emitting source to the main features of the beam small-scale structures.

Abstract

International audience; We study temporally localized electron wave packets, generated using a train of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses to ionize the target atoms. Both the electron wave packets and the attosecond pulse train (APT) are characterized using the same technique, based on interference of two-photon transitions in the continuum. We study, in particular, the energy transfer from a moderately strong infrared (IR) field to the electron wave packets as a function of time delay between the XUV and the IR fields. The use of an APT to generate the electron wave packets enables the generation at times not accessible through tunneling ionization. We find that a significant amount of energy is transferred from the IR field to the electron wave packets, when they are generated at a zero-crossing of the IR laser field. This energy transfer results in a dramatically enhanced above-threshold ionization even at IR intensities that alone are not strong enough to induce any significant ionization.

International audience; Following the theoretical predictions, the observation of two-photon processes by interaction of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation with inner-shell levels of atoms requires focused intensities in the 10^13-10^14 W/cm^2 range. Our aim is to reach this regime in order to study non-linear optics at these wavelengths. We first optimized the high harmonic conversion efficiency in argon by studying the best experimental conditions for phase-matching, concentrating on focus geometry related to laser energy, cell length and position relative to the focus. We then studied the resulting harmonic beam focusability by a toroidal mirror ( f=10 cm) and made an image of the harmonic focus. We conclude with an evaluation of the focused intensity that we are able to reach experimentally.

Abstract

For He-like ions, photoabsorption and photoionization cross-sections of 1s 2 can differ in the resonance region due to possible resonance radiative decays. This difference increases along isoelectronic sequence. As an example, the 2s2p autoionizing state is considered for different atomic elements (Z = 16, 20, 26). For these elements, we use atomic data computed, without radiative damping, by the R-matrix Breit–Pauli code for 1s 2 and 1s2s photoionization processes, which are available on atomic data websites. Applying Davies and Seaton’s (1969 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Phys. 2 757) radiative damping theory, we insert the damping effect. Comparisons are made with similar data computed by another code, which uses Robicheaux et al’s (1995 Phys. Rev. A 52 1319) damping theory, also available on an atomic code website. We also present a very simple approximation of Davies and Seaton’s theory, and test it by comparisons of data computed with and without the approximation.

15. Observation of spectral gain narrowing in a high-order harmonic seeded soft-x-ray amplifier

Abstract

International audience; We report an observation of spectral gain narrowing of a high-order harmonic amplified by a soft-x-ray optical-field-ionized plasma. The temporal coherence and spectral linewidth of both the seeded and unseeded soft-x-ray lasers were experimentally measured using a varying-path-difference interferometer. The results showed that the high-order harmonic is subject to a strong spectral narrowing during its propagation in the plasma amplifier without rebroadening at saturation. This is in good agreement with a radiative transfer calculation including gain narrowing and saturation rebroadening.

Abstract

International audience; We present what we believe to be the first measurement of the spectral properties of a soft x-ray laser seeded by a high-order harmonic beam. Using an interferometric method, the spectral profile of a seeded Ni-like krypton soft x-ray laser (32.8 nm) generated by optical field ionization has been experimentally determined, and the shortest possible pulse duration has been deduced. The source exhibits a Voigt spectral profile with an FWHM of 3.1±0.3 mÅ, leading to a Fourier-transform pulse duration of 4.7 ps. This value is comparable with the upper limit of the soft x-ray pulse duration determined by experimentally investigating the gain dynamics, from which we conclude that the source has reached the Fourier limit. The measured bandwidth is in good agreement with the predictions of a radiative transfer code, including gain line narrowing and saturation rebroadening.

International audience; In this contribution we present results on opacity and radiative power losses in laser-produced plasmas. We focus our attention on the inner shell transition array 1s-2p in an aluminum plasma. At high densities, electron, Doppler and ion Stark broadening play a role in line merging. This is why the PPP line shape code developed at Universite de Provence was adapted to calculate opacity and radiative power losses in Al and Ge ions. Abstract

International audience; We present experimental results from an extensive investigation of a Ni-like Mo x-ray laser pumped in the transient regime and GRIP configuration (GRazing Incidence Pumping). The pump laser is a 10 Hz, 1 J, Ti:sapphire laser system. The main diagnostic is a monochromatic near-field imaging system with a 1.7 micron spatial resolution that shows the soft-x-ray laser source size and position relative to the target surface. Changes of those characteristics are observed for different GRIP angles, varied between 15° and 21° , while keeping all other parameters constant. Intense lasing is observed routinely at 18.9 nm with up to 3 microjoule output energy and stable operation is demonstrated at 10 Hz. We have investigated the role of several pumping parameters, in particular, the relative energy and delay between the long and short pulse. We show that this multiparameter scan leads to a well-defined optimal regime of operation and better understanding of the GRIP configuration. Finally, as the GRIP scheme requires careful tailoring of the plasma conditions to the specific soft-x-ray laser under investigation, we add a prepulse before the plasma producing long pulse to generate large-scale preplasmas. This increases the brightness of the soft-x-ray beam and leads to an almost Gaussian near-field spatial profile.

International audience; We present in this paper quantum mechanical calculations for the electron impact Stark linewidths of the 2s3s-2s3p transitions for the four beryllium-like ions from N IV to Ne VII. Calculations are made in the frame of the impact approximation and intermediate coupling, taking into account fine-structure effects. A comparison between our calculations, experimental and other theoretical results, shows a good agreement. This is the first time that such a good agreement is found between quantum and experimental linewidths of highly charged ions.

Abstract

Two-color above threshold ionization of helium and xenon has been used to analyze the synchronization between individual pulses of the femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free electron laser in Hamburg and an independent intense 120 fs mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Characteristic sidebands appear in the photoelectron spectra when the two pulses overlap spatially and temporally. The cross-correlation curve points to a 250 fs rms jitter between the two sources at the experiment. A more precise determination of the temporal fluctuation between the XUV and infrared pulses is obtained through the analysis of the single-shot sideband intensities.

Abstract

We have modelled an experiment performed at the LULI facility (Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France). This experiment was devoted to the measurement of the temporal coherence of the transient Ni-like silver X-ray laser at the wavelength of 13.9 nm. In population kinetics studies of saturated lasers, it is necessary to account for the interaction between the X-ray laser electric field and the lasing ions. To this end, we have used the Maxwell–Bloch formalism in the paraxial approximation. The Zeeman sublevels (JM) associated with the lower lasing level (J = 1) are not identically affected by the X-ray laser field. As a result, their populations are different. However, elastic collisions between free electrons and lasing ions have the opposite effect: they tend to restore equilibrium between the sublevel populations. Therefore, elastic collision rates obtained in the distorted wave approximation have been included in the rate equations. Refraction of the X-ray beam, due to electron density gradients, is taken into account by using a ray-trace code which works as a post-processor of the hydro-code EHYBRID. We have checked that the Voigt profile is a good approximation for lasing lines in Ni-like ions. This allowed us to implement a subroutine calculating the Voigt profile in the Maxwell–Bloch code. Whilst the FWHM of the spontaneous emission profile is 12 mA, the amplified X-ray line shows a smaller width of ∼3 mA. This is known as the gain narrowing effect. We notice the saturation of the line-width for a propagation length of 2–3 mm. Comparison with experiment is discussed.

Abstract

An overview of the recent experimental and theoretical works on photoinduced cascades of Auger and fluorescence transitions in atoms is presented. We concentrate on the angular correlation and polarization phenomena in such cascades and how they are related to the alignment and orientation of the core-excited or core-ionized atomic states produced in the photoabsorption. During the decay, the alignment and orientation are then transferred to the energetically lower atomic states, causing an anisotropy and polarization of the subsequent Auger or fluorescence emission. Special attention is paid to the practically important case of overlapping resonances and intermediate states. Coherent excitation of the resonances and the coherence transfer in the decay strongly influence the angular and polarization characteristics of the decay products. The studies on the angular correlations and polarization of the emitted particles provide detailed spectroscopic and dynamic information about the transitions involved. In some cases, moreover, a so-called ‘complete’ experiment, i.e. the experimental determination of the transition amplitudes including their relative phases, becomes possible. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The 1s photoionization of atomic Li was studied by photoelectron spectroscopy in the photon energy region between 85 and 140 eV for the ground state and the three lowest excited configurations Li* 1s{sup 2}nl, nl=2p, 3s, 3p. The importance of electron correlations was investigated by comparing the multielectron transitions, so-called shake-up and conjugate shake-up satellites, and the direct process, so-called main lines. The relative intensity of the satellites increases with the level of initial excitation of the Li atom. The shake-up process dominates for states with an n=3 valence electron and the satellites become stronger than the main lines. This spectacular effect can be explained by the spatial overlap of the initial and final state wave functions. Surprisingly, the spatial overlap affects shake-up and conjugate shake-up lines in the same way.

International audience; Many atomic physics codes are now available to build synthetic line spectra of high temperature plasmas. They usually provide energy levels, radiative/autoionisation probability rates, and electron impact collision strengths. However, more information could be extracted, in particular electron impact line widths that are important for dense plasmas. We present such an extension implemented on well-known UCL code package, SUPERSTRUCTURE/DISWAV/JAJOM. Here the Baranger formulation for the line widths, rewritten by Seaton and formulated in for fine-structure states was used. The new code gives the different broadening contributions: excitation, de-excitation and ``elastic''. As examples we present the electron line-broadening of the Ne-like Cu XX X-ray lasing line, 1s22s22p53s (3P1)-1s2s22p53p (1S0), and the Ne-like Al IV inner-shell absorption line, 1s22s22p6 (1S0)-1s2s22p63p (1P1). In the Al IV case these results emphasize the non-negligible contribution of the ``elastic'' process.

Abstract

The Maxwell-Bloch code COLAX has been upgraded to use detailed hydrodynamical and collisional-radiative simulations of a soft x-ray laser plasma with traveling-wave pumping. The seeding of short pulses of high-order harmonics of the pump laser into the x-ray laser medium has been simulated. The amplification is shown to be a dynamic, two-stage process: the atomic dipoles of the lasing ions are first coherently excited by the short pulse, and subsequently generate a radiation wake which is amplified along its path through the plasma, with consequences on the experimentally recorded spectra.

Abstract

Spherical and parabolic partial cross sections and asymmetry parameters, defined in the ejected electron frame, are presented for photoionization excitation of the helium atom at $0.1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ above its double ionization threshold. A quantitative law giving the dominant spherical partial wave ${l}_{\mathrm{dom}}$ for each excitation level $n$ is obtained. The parabolic partial cross sections are shown to satisfy the same approximate selection rules as the related Rydberg series of doubly excited states ${(K,T)}_{n}^{A}$. The analysis of radial and angular correlations reveals the close relationship between double excitation, ionization excitation, and double ionization. Opposite to a widespread belief, the observed value of the asymmetry parameter is shown to result from the interplay of radial correlations and symmetry constraints, irrespective of angular correlations. Finally, the measurement of parabolic partial cross sections is proposed as a challenge to experimentalists.

Abstract

In this paper, we present results on the temporal coherence of the Ni-like palladium x-ray laser. We have modeled an experiment performed at the COMET laser facility (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory), in order to investigate the coherence properties of the line at wavelength $14.68\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ ($4d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}4p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{1}P_{1}$ transition). To this end, a ray-tracing postprocessor is coupled to a collisional-radiative code. The effect of saturation on gain coefficient values is taken into account by developing a rigorous approach based on the Maxwell-Bloch formalism. The temporal coherence depends strongly on the shape and width of the amplified line. Our calculations give a coherence length of $290\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. While the full width at half maximum of the optically thin line is $28\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{m}\mathrm{\AA{}}$, the amplified x-ray line exhibits a Gaussian profile and a width of $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{m}\mathrm{\AA{}}$. Calculated coherence lengths and gains agree with measurements. Comparison with experiment is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; A novel multilayer mirror was designed and fabricated based on a recently developed three-material technology aimed both at reaching reflectivities of about 20% and at controlling dispersion over a bandwidth covering photon energies between 35 and 50 eV. The spectral phase upon reflection was retrieved by measuring interferences in a two-color ionization process using high-order harmonics produced from a titanium: sapphire laser. We demonstrate the feasibility of designing and characterizing phase-controlled broadband optics in the extreme-ultraviolet domain, which should facilitate the manipulation of attosecond pulses for applications.

Abstract

The Coulomb explosion of the hydrogen molecule, after absorption of a 76 eV photon, has been studied by momentum imaging the two electrons and the two protons. Absolute fully differential cross sections of high statistical quality are obtained. A subset of the overall data, namely, equal electron-energy sharing, is used to investigate the effects of molecular orientation on the photoelectron angular distribution. Departures from the first-order heliumlike model are evident in detection geometries where electronelectron correlation is ‘‘frozen.’’ During the last decade experimental techniques have been steadily improving, enabling studies of the correlated electron pair dynamics produced in photodouble ionization (PDI). PDI of the simplest two-electron molecule, H2 ,i s significantly more complex than the well-studied case of helium and introduces new physical effects. First, there is no unique double ionization threshold; the threshold energy depends on internuclear separation as the upper repulsive potential curve is purely Coulombic. Second, the ground state electronic configuration is inevitably more complex as a result of the two-center nuclear potential. Third, PDI in H2 is followed by a so-called ‘‘Coulomb explosion’’ as the two protons rapidly separate in opposite directions. Since the photo-fragmentation process is rapid compared to molecular rotation, the relative momentum of the two escaping protons defines the molecular alignment at the instant of double ionization. Energy- and angleresolved detection of all four particles —with a welldefined light polarization state —completely defines the PDI dynamics and allows one to study fully differential cross sections (FDCS) within the molecular frame using such ‘‘fixed-in-space’’ molecules. These measurements provide the most stringent tests for theory and the greatest possible physical insight into this prototypical 4-body process.

Abstract

A soft-x-ray laser amplifier based on plasma solid target with a weak transverse refraction and a large gain zone is numerically investigated. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic code ARWEN with radiation transport solved by multigroup method based on adaptive mesh refinement has been used to describe the spatial and temporal plasma evolution. An iron target is transiently pumped creating gain on the $J=0\ensuremath{-}1$ neonlike transition at $\ensuremath{\lambda}=25.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$. We show that using a super-Gaussian, instead of Gaussian, transverse spatial laser driver profile leads to a reduction of the transverse refraction by two orders of magnitude and to an enlargement of the gain zone surface by about a factor of 2.

Abstract

Dielectronic satellite lines due to 1s(2)n'1'-1snpn'1' (n = 3,4) transitions in Li-like Si (Si XII) occur at 5.818 and 5.565 angstrom, on the long wavelength side of the He-like Si (Si XIII) 1s(2)-1s3p and 1s(2)-1 s4p lines at 5.681 and 5.384 angstrom, respectively. They have been extensively observed with the RESIK crystal spectrometer on the Russian spacecraft CORONAS-F. As with corresponding satellites 1s(2)nl-1s2pnl on the long-wavelength side of the Si XIII 1s(2)-1s2p resonance line, there is an inverse temperature dependence of the intensity ratio of the satellites to the He-like ion lines (I-sat/I-He). New atomic data are used to calculate the Si XII satellite line intensities and thus the I-sat/I-He ratio. RESIK observations of the ratio in solar flares, together with temperatures from the ratio of the two GOES X-ray channels, are compared with theoretical variation of the ratio with temperature. The good agreement indicates this to be a valuable temperature diagnostic for solar flares and laboratory plasmas such as tokamaks. There are implications for similar satellites in Fe line spectra which are observed with broad-band resolution by the RHESSI solar flare mission. (C) 2005 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

International audience; High harmonic amplification is shown in an optical-field ionized X-ray laser. The 4d–4p X-ray line of Kr^8+ at 32.8 nm, which has a close match to the 25th harmonic of the infrared laser, was amplified up to 200 times. The energy-extraction regime was also achieved, which depended on the level of seeding. This second-generation X-ray laser is fully polarized, has low divergence and shows a high degree of coherence. The duration is also expected to be short, fulfilling the requirements for an ultra-intense tabletop X-ray laser. Conditions for higher energy output are also suggested.

Abstract

A complete set of cross sections is presented for photodouble ionization of He at $0.1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ above the threshold. Special care is taken to clear the asymmetry parameter and the energy differential cross section of any ionization-excitation contribution. As a result, their limiting behaviors for the fully asymmetric partitionings of the excess energy are elucidated, thus shedding light on pending discussions in the field. A reliable scheme follows for computing the fully integrated cross section. Very good agreement is observed between the calculated and measured fully differential cross sections after a detailed reassessment of the experimental normalization procedure. The present findings are compared with the assumptions underlying the Wannier picture of near-threshold double escape.

Abstract

International audience; Energy- and angle-resolved photoionization spectra of He irradiated by linearly polarized intense 810 nm laser radiation and several of its XUV odd harmonics are investigated. The angular distribution of the odd-order peaks, produced by single-photon ionization by one harmonic, is, surprisingly, broadened by the IR field. The even-order ones, due to two-colour, two-photon ionization, show at 90° lobes which depend on the relative IR–XUV phase. Application to the characterization of attosecond pulses is suggested.

Abstract

In the race towards attosecond (as) pulses for which high order harmonics generated in rare gases are the best candidates, both the Harmonic spectral range and spectral phase have to be controlled. We present in this proceeding four mirrors numerically optimized and designed to compensate for the intrinsic Harmonic chirp recently discovered and which is responsible for a temporal broadening of the pulses. They are capable of compressing the duration down to 100 as. We present the fabrication of those aperiodic multilayers and show the measurement of reflectivity, which prooves that those multilayers are in agreement with the specifications and so let us think that they will be able to compress attosecond high harmonics trains.

Abstract

Longitudinal coherence length in x-ray lasers depends strongly on the shape of the amplified line. We have modeled an experiment performed at the Lawrence Livermor e National Laboratory. The experiment was devoted to the study of the temporal (longitudinal) coherence of the transient x-ray laser at 14.7 nm in Ni-like palladium (4d-4 p transition). Only electron (collisional) and Doppler broadening play a role in the line profile of the 0-1 4 d-4 p transition. This allows us to use the Voigt shape in conditions where the amplifier, i.e., the plasma produced by the interaction of a high intensity laser with a slab target, is neither stationary nor homogeneous. Our calculations use a ray trace code which is constructed as a post-processor of the hydro-atomic code EHYBRID. In the saturation regime, there is need to account properly for the in teraction between the x-ray laser field and the lasing ions. This is done in the framework of the Maxwell-Bloch formalism. The FWHM of the spontaneous emission profile is a 28 mA, while the width of the amplified x-ray line a 4 mA. Comparison with experiment is discussed. Keywords: x-ray laser, XUV sources

International audience; In the race toward attosecond pulses, for which high-order harmonics generated in rare gases are the best candidates, both the harmonic spectral range and the spectral phase have to be controlled. We demonstrate that multilayer extreme-ultraviolet chirped mirrors can be numerically optimized and designed to compensate for the intrinsic harmonic chirp that was recently discovered and that is responsible for temporal broadening of pulses. A simulation shows that an optimized mirror is capable of compressing the duration from 260 to 90 as. This new technique is an interesting solution because of its ability to cover a wider spectral range than other technical devices that have already been proposed to overcome the chirp of high harmonics.

Abstract

International audience; We give on overview of recent advances in collisionally pumped optical field-ionization soft X-ray lasers developed at LOA. Saturated amplification has been achieved on the 5d-5p transition in Xe^8+ at 41.8 nm, and on the 4d-4p transition in Kr^8+ at 32.8 nm. We demonstrate a significant increase of the energy output from the Xe^8+ laser driven within two types of wave-guide. Finally, we present results of a pioneering work aimed to set up and characterize the first true soft X-ray laser chain.

Abstract

The study of the emission of two electrons from an atom by absorption of a single energetic photon has become of much current interest because it provides the most detailed information on the interaction of the electrons between themselves. Its investigation in the simplest two-electron system, the He atom, in the last ten years has challenged experimentalists and theorists alike. By using selected examples from electron–electron and electron–recoil ion coincidence experiments the main achievements in the field are reviewed. It is shown that the dynamics of the electron pair is strongly constrained by its own symmetry and the Coulomb repulsion. The further aspects brought in by the experiments in diatomic molecules (H2, HD and D2) as well as in the heavier rare gases are also illustrated. Future perspectives which involve other processes which result in an electron pair in the continuum are considered.

Abstract

We have calculated the equivalent widths of the absorption lines produced by Fe XXV and Fe XXVI in a Compton-thin, low-velocity photoionised material illuminated by the nuclear continuum in AGN. The results, plotted against the ionisation parameter and the column density of the gas, are a complement to those presented by Bianchi & Matt 2002 for the emission lines from the same ionic species. As an extension to the work by Bianchi & Matt 2002, we also present a qualitative discussion on the different contributions to the He-like iron emission line complex in the regimes where recombination or resonant scattering dominates, providing a useful diagnostic tool to measure the column density of the gas. Future high resolution missions (e.g., Astro-E2) will allow us to fully take advantage of these plasma diagnostics. In the meantime, we compare our results with an up-to-date list of Compton-thick and unobscured (at least at the iron line energy) Seyfert galaxies with emission and/or absorption lines from H- and He-like iron observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton.

Abstract

International audience; We use a train of sub-200 attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses with energies just above the ionization threshold in argon to create a train of temporally localized electron wave packets. We study the energy transfer from a strong infrared (IR) laser field to the ionized electrons as a function of the delay between the XUV and IR fields. When the wave packets are born at the zero crossings of the IR field, a significant amount of energy (∼20 eV) is transferred from the field to the electrons. This results in dramatically enhanced above-threshold ionization in conditions where the IR field alone does not induce any significant ionization. Because both the energy and duration of the wave packets can be varied independently of the IR laser, they are valuable tools for studying and controlling strong-field processes.

Abstract

A XUV Michelson interferometer has been developed by LIXAM/CEA/LCFIO and has been tested as a Fourier-transform spectrometer for measurement of X-ray laser line shape. The observed strong deformation of the interference fringes limited the interest of such an interferometer for plasma probing. Because the fringe deformation was coming from a distortion of the beam splitter (5 × 5 mm2open aperture, about 150 nm thick), several parameters of the multilayer deposition used for the beam splitter fabrication have been recently optimized. The flatness has been improved from 80 nm rms obtained by using the ion beam sputtering technique, to 20 nm rms by using the magnetron sputtering technique. Over 3 × 3 mm2, the beam splitter has a flatness better than 4 nm rms.

Abstract

International audience; Metrology of XUV beams (X-ray lasers, high-harmonic generation and VUV free-electron lasers) is of crucial importance for the development of applications. We have thus developed several new optical systems enabling us to measure the optical properties of XUV beams. By use of a Michelson interferometer working as a Fourier-transform spectrometer, the line shapes of different X-ray lasers have been measured with a very high accuracy (Δλ/λ~10^-6). Achievement of the first XUV wavefront sensor has enabled us to measure the beam quality of laser-pumped as well as discharge-pumped X-ray lasers. A capillary discharge X-ray laser has demonstrated a very good wavefront allowing us to achieve an intensity as high as 3×10^14 W cm^-2 by focusing with a f=5 cm mirror. The sensor accuracy has been measured using a calibrated spherical wave generated by diffraction. The accuracy has been estimated to be as good as λ/120 at 13 nm. Commercial developments are underway. At Laboratoire drsquoOptique Appliquée, we are setting up a new beamline based on high-harmonic generation in order to start the femtosecond, coherent XUV optic .

We give an overview of recent experimental results on optical-field-ionization collisional soft X-ray lasers developed at LOA. By focusing a 30-fs, circularly polarized Ti-sapphire laser pulse at an intensity of up to 8×1017 Wcm-2 into a low-density gas cell containing Xe or Kr, we produced a few mm long plasma column for soft X-ray amplifier. Saturated amplification has been achieved on the 4d95d(1 S 0)–4d95p(1 P 1) transition at 41.8 nm in Xe8+, and on the 3d94d(1 S 0)–3d94p(1 P 1) transition in Kr8+ at 32.8 nm. Under optimum pumping conditions the Xe8+ laser provides about (5±2)×109 photons per pulse whilst the Kr8+ laser delivers up to (2.5±1)×109 photons per shot. The repetition rate of these soft X-ray lasers is 10 Hz. The beam wavefront of the Xe8+ laser has been measured by a Shack–Hartmann soft X-ray wavefront sensor, and the pulse duration by a cross-correlation technique.

Abstract

International audience; With the construction of novel XUV sources, such as VUV FELrsquos, XUV laser-matter interaction will become available at ultra-high intensities. But even tabletop facilities such as XUV lasers or High Harmonic Generation, are starting to reach intensities high enough to produce dense plasmas. XUV laser-matter interaction is studied by a 1D hydrodynamic Lagrangian code with radiative transfer for a range of interesting XUV sources. Heating is found to be very different for Z = 12-14 elements having L-edges around the XUV laser wavelength. Possible absorption mechanisms were investigated in order to explain this behaviour, and interaction with cold dense matter proved to be dominant. Plasma sensitivity to XUV laser parameters such as energy, pulse duration, and wavelength was also studied, covering ranges of existing XUV lasers. We found that XUV laser-produced plasmas could be studied using tabletop lasers, paving the way for future VUV-FEL high intensity experiments.

Abstract

We present absolute measurements for photoionisation of multiply-charged ions N2+ and O3+ in the ground and metastable states. Multiconfiguration Dirac Fock calculations were performed for N2+ and are tested here by comparison with experimental results. Our experimental and theoretical results are also compared to the theoretical data available in the Opacity Project data base.

Abstract

We present what is to our knowledge the first longitudinal coherence measurement of a transient inversion collisional x-ray laser. We investigated the picosecond output of a Ni-like Pd x-ray laser at 14.68 nm generated by the COMET laser facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Interference fringes were generated with a Michelson interferometer setup in which a thin multilayer membrane was used as a beam splitter. We determined the longitudinal coherence for the 4d1S0 --4p1P1 lasing transition to be approximately 400 microm (1/e half-width) by changing the length of one interferometer arm and measuring the resultant variation in fringe visibility. The inferred gain-narrowed linewidth of approximately 0.29 pm is a factor of 4 less than previously measured in quasi-steady-state x-ray laser schemes.

Abstract

Absorption L-lines of iron ions are observed, in absorption, in spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies by the new generation of X-ray satellites: Chandra (NASA) and XMM-Newton (ESA). Lines associated to Fe23+ to Fe17+ are well resolved. Whereas, those corresponding to Fe16+ to Fe6+ are unresolved. Forbidden transitions of the Fe16+ to Fe6+ ions were previously observed, for the same objects, in the visible and infra-red regions, showing that the plasma had a low density. To interpret X-ray, visible and infra-red data, astrophysical models assume an extended absorbing medium of very low density surrounding an intense X-ray source. We have calculated atomic data (wavelengths, radiative and autoionization rates) for n=2 to n'=3-4 transitions and used them to construct refined synthetic spectra of the unresolved part of the L-line spectra., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer, in press

Abstract

We present He-like line ratios (resonance, intercombination and forbidden lines) for totally and partially photoionized media. For solar plasmas, these line ratios are already widely used for density and temperature diagnostics of coronal (collisional) plasmas. In the case of totally and partially photoionized plasmas, He-like line ratios allow for the determination of the ionization processes involved in the plasma (photoionization with or without an additional collisional ionization process), as well as the density and the electronic temperature. With the new generation of X-ray satellites, Chandra/AXAF, XMM and Astro-E, it will be feasible to obtain both high spectral resolution and high sensitivity observations. Thus in the coming years, the ratios of these three components will be measurable for a large number of non-solar objects. In particular, these ratios could be applied to the Warm Absorber-Emitter, commonly present in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A better understanding of the Warm Absorber connection to other regions (Broad Line Region, Narrow Line Region) in AGN (Seyferts type-1 and type-2, low- and high-redshift quasars...) will be an important key to obtaining strong constraints on unified schemes. We have calculated He-like line ratios, for Z=6, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 14, taking into account the upper level radiative cascades which we have computed for radiative and dielectronic recombinations and collisional excitation. The atomic data are tabulated over a wide range of temperatures in order to be used for interpreting a large variety of astrophysical plasmas., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, 14 tables.
