Recently, Schmid and Spekkens studied the quantum contextuality in terms of state discrimination. By dealing with the minimum error discrimination of two quantum states with identical prior probabilities, they reported that quantum contextual advantage exists. Meanwhile, if one notes a striking observation that the selection of prior probability can affect the quantum properties of the system, it is necessary to verify whether the quantum contextual advantage depends on the prior probabilities of the given states. In this paper, we consider the minimum error discrimination of two states with arbitrary prior probabilities, in which both states are pure or mixed. We show that the quantum contextual advantage in state discrimination may depend on the prior probabilities of the given states. In particular, even though the quantum contextual advantage always exists in the state discrimination of two nonorthogonal pure states with nonzero prior probabilities, the quantum contextual advantage depends on prior probabilities in the state discrimination of two mixed states.

Contextuality is a phenomenon at the heart of quantum mechanics different from classical behavior and has been recently identified as a resource in quantum information processing. Experimental demonstration of contextuality is thus an important goal. We experimentally demonstrate a test of state-independent contextuality in a four-dimensional Hilbert space with single photons and violate the inequality by at least 387 standard deviations. Despite imperfections and possible measurement disturbance, our results cannot be explained in non-contextual models. We also provide a theoretical analysis of a test of contextuality with a coherent light field and show how the definitions affect the emergence of non-classical correlations. Our result sheds new light on the conflict between quantum and classical physics.

Contextuality is often described as a unique feature of the quantum realm, which distinguishes it fundamentally from the classical realm. This is not strictly true, and stems from decades of the misapplication of Kolmogorov probability. Contextuality appears in Kolmogorov theory (observed in the inability to form joint distributions) and in non-Kolmogorov theory (observed in the violation of inequalities of correlations). Both forms of contextuality have been observed in psychological experiments, although the first form has been known for decades but mostly ignored. The complex dynamics of neural systems (neurobehavioural regulatory systems) and of collective intelligence systems (social insect colonies) are described. These systems are contextual in the first sense and possibly in the second as well. Process algebra, based on the Process Theory of Whitehead, describes systems that are generated, transient, open, interactive, and primarily information-driven, and seems ideally suited to modeling these systems. It is argued that these dynamical characteristics give rise to contextuality and non-Kolmogorov probability in spite of these being entirely classical systems.

Quantum theory shows a striking nonclassical feature of contextuality, which is also a crucial resource for quantum information processing. In this paper, we study the dependence of violating noncontextuality inequalities against the dimension of quantum systems. To this end, we consider the restrictions imposed on relations among measurements by limitation of dimensions. Based on the graph-theoretic approach to quantum contextuality, we construct noncontextuality inequalities using multiple mutually orthogonal projectors which are unique to high-dimensional quantum systems. We report two typical classes of dimension-dependent noncontextuality inequalities for one of which a violation implies the dimension of the quantum system is higher than a threshold, and for the other, different amounts of violations correspond to different thresholds of dimension. Our paper is expected to inspire more dimension-dependent noncontextuality inequalities.

Contextuality and nonlocality are nonclassical properties exhibited by quantum statistics whose implications profoundly impact both the foundations and applications of quantum theory. In this paper we provide some insights into logical contextuality and inequality-free proofs. The former can be understood as the possibility version of contextuality, while the latter refers to proofs of quantum contextuality and nonlocality that are not based on violations of some noncontextuality (or Bell) inequality. By ``possibilistic'' we mean a description in terms of possibilities for the outcomes, which are Boolean variables assuming value one when the corresponding probability is strictly larger than zero and zero otherwise. The present work aims to build a bridge between these two concepts from what we call possibilistic paradoxes, which are sets of possibilistic conditions whose occurrence implies contextuality and nonlocality. As the main result, we demonstrate the existence of possibilistic paradoxes whose occurrence is a necessary and sufficient condition for logical contextuality in a very important class of scenarios. Finally, we discuss some interesting consequences arising from the completeness of these possibilistic paradoxes.

We introduce a general method which converts, in a unified way, any form of quantum contextuality, including any form of state-dependent contextuality, into a quantum violation of a bipartite Bell inequality. We propose the Kochen-Specker theorem that relies on the properties of the Kronecker delta. We introduce the following value $\sum _{l = 1}^{m} r_{l}(\langle \sigma _{z}\rangle )= 0$ . The notation rl(〈σz〉) means the lth “hidden” outcome of quantum measurements when we would measure the expected value 〈σz〉 = 0 in a thoughtful experiment. Surprisingly, we cannot define the value as zero when we accept the Kronecker delta. We cannot determine the “hidden” results for the expected value.

Bell's theorem implies that any completion of quantum mechanics which uses hidden variables (that is, preexisting values of all observables) must be nonlocal in the Einstein sense. This customarily indicates that knowledge of the hidden variables would permit superluminal communication. Such superluminal signaling, akin to the existence of a preferred reference frame, is to be expected. However, here we provide a protocol that allows an observer with knowledge of the hidden variables to communicate with her own causal past, without superluminal signaling. That is, such knowledge would contradict causality, irrespectively of the validity of relativity theory. Among the ways we propose for bypassing the paradox there is the possibility of hidden variables that change their values even when the state does not, and that means that signaling backwards in time is prohibited in Bohmian mechanics., Minorly revised version

Contextuality and entanglement are valuable resources for quantum computing and quantum information. Bell inequalities are used to certify entanglement, thus, it is important to understand why and how they are violated. Quantum mechanics and behavioural sciences teach us that random variables ‘measuring’ the same content (the answer to the same Yes or No question) may vary, if ‘measured’ jointly with other random variables. Alice’s and Bob’s raw data confirm Einsteinian non-signaling, but setting dependent experimental protocols are used to create samples of coupled pairs of distant ±1 outcomes and to estimate correlations.Marginal expectations, estimated using these final samples, depend on distant settings. Therefore,a system of random variables ‘measured’ in Bell tests is inconsistently connected and it should be analyzed using a Contextuality-by-Default approach, what is done for the first time in this paper.The violation of Bell inequalities and inconsistent connectedness may be explained using a contextual locally causal probabilistic model in which setting dependent variables describing measuring instruments are correctly incorporated. We prove that this model does not restrict experimenters` freedom of choice which is a prerequisite of science. Contextuality seems to be the rule and not an exception, thus, it should be carefully tested.

The conspiracy of ontic states responding to measurements contextually to comply with noncontextual quantum mechanical probabilities is analyzed for general ontological models. A general physical picture of ontological space structure and how ontic states are disturbed by measurement contexts is presented. A common assumption in ontological models called $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ sufficiency is analyzed and argued to be inconsistent with measurement contextuality for ontological models with certain symmetry in ontic space with respect to quantum states and measurements.

This paper describes a simple, causally deterministic model of quantum measurement based on an amplitude threshold detection scheme. Surprisingly, it is found to reproduce many phenomena normally thought to be uniquely quantum in nature. To model an $N$-dimensional pure state, the model uses $N$ complex random variables given by a scaled version of the wave vector with additive complex noise. Measurements are defined by threshold crossings of the individual components, conditioned on single-component threshold crossings. The resulting detection probabilities match or approximate those predicted by quantum mechanics according to the Born rule. Nevertheless, quantum phenomena such as entanglement, contextuality, and violations of Bell's inequality under local measurements are all shown to be exhibited by the model, thereby demonstrating that such phenomena are not without classical analogs., Comment: 26 pages, no figures

The question of a hidden variable interpretation of quantum contextuality in the Mermin-Peres square is considered. The Kochen-Specker theorem implies that quantum mechanics may be interpreted as a contextual hidden variable theory. It is shown that such a hidden variable description can be viewed as either contextual in the random variables mapping hidden states to observable outcomes or in the probability measure on the hidden state space. The latter view suggests that this apparent contextuality may be interpreted as a simple consequence of measurement disturbance, wherein the initial hidden state is altered through interaction with the measuring device, thereby giving rise to a possibly different final hidden variable state from which the measurement outcome is obtained. In light of this observation, a less restrictive and, arguably, more reasonable definition of noncontextuality is suggested. To prove that such a description is possible, an explicit and, in this sense, noncontextual hidden variable model is constructed which reproduces all quantum theoretic predictions for the Mermin-Peres square. A critical analysis of some recent and proposed experimental tests of contextuality is also provided. Quantum walks are counterparts of classical random walks. They spread faster, which can be exploited in information processing tasks, and constitute a versatile simulation platform for many quantum systems. Yet, some of their properties can be emulated with classical light. This rises a question: which aspects of the model are truly nonclassical? We address it by carrying out a photonic experiment based on a pre- and post-selection paradox. The paradox implies that if somebody could choose to ask, either if the particle is at position x = 0 at even time steps, or at position x = d (d > 1) at odd time steps, the answer would be positive, no matter the question asked. Therefore, the particle seems to undergo long distance oscillations despite the fact that the model allows to jump one position at a time. We translate this paradox into a Bell-like inequality and experimentally confirm its violation up to eight standard deviations., 7 pages, 6 figures

Quasiparticle poisoning, expected to arise during the measurement of Majorana zero mode state, poses a fundamental problem towards the realization of Majorana-based quantum computation. Parafermions, a natural generalization of Majorana fermions, can encode topological qudits immune to quasiparticle poisoning. While parafermions are expected to emerge in superconducting fractional quantum Hall systems, they are not yet attainable with current technology. To bypass this problem, we employ a photonic quantum simulator to experimentally demonstrate the key components of parafermion-based universal quantum computation. Our contributions in this article are twofold. First, by manipulating the photonic states, we realize Clifford operator Berry phases that correspond to braiding statistics of parafermions. Second, we investigate the quantum contextuality in a topological system for the first time by demonstrating the contextuality of parafermion encoded qudit states. Importantly, we find that the topologically-encoded contextuality opens the way to magic state distillation, while both the contextuality and the braiding-induced Clifford gates are resilient against local noise. International audience; We propose a method to experimentally demonstrate contextuality with a family of tests for qudits. The experiment we propose uses a qudit encoded in the path of a single photon and its temporal degrees of freedom. We consider the impact of noise on the effectiveness of these tests, taking the approach of ontologically faithful non-contextuality. In this approach, imperfections in the experimental set up must be taken into account in any faithful ontological (classical) model, which limits how much the statistics can deviate within different contexts. In this way we bound the precision of the experimental setup under which ontologically faithful non-contextual models can be refuted. We further consider the noise tolerance through different types of decoherence models on different types of encodings of qudits. We quantify the effect of the decoherence on the required precision for the experimental setup in order to demonstrate contextuality in this broader sense.

The predictions of quantum theory resist generalised noncontextual explanations. In addition to the foundational relevance of this fact, the particular extent to which quantum theory violates noncontextuality limits available quantum advantage in communication and information processing. In the first part of this work, we formally define contextuality scenarios via prepare-and-measure experiments, along with the polytope of general contextual behaviours containing the set of quantum contextual behaviours. This framework allows us to recover several properties of set of quantum behaviours in these scenarios, including contextuality scenarios and associated noncontextuality inequalities that require for their violation the individual quantum preparation and measurement procedures to be mixed states and unsharp measurements. With the framework in place, we formulate novel semidefinite programming relaxations for bounding these sets of quantum contextual behaviours. Most significantly, to circumvent the inadequacy of pure states and projective measurements in contextuality scenarios, we present a novel unitary operator based semidefinite relaxation technique. We demonstrate the efficacy of these relaxations by obtaining tight upper bounds on the quantum violation of several noncontextuality inequalities and identifying novel maximally contextual quantum strategies. To further illustrate the versatility of these relaxations, we demonstrate monogamy of preparation contextuality in a tripartite setting, and present a secure semi-device independent quantum key distribution scheme powered by quantum advantage in parity oblivious random access codes., Revised version, accepted in Quantum

The circumstances of measurement have more direct significance in quantum than in classical physics, where they can be neglected for well-performed measurements. In quantum mechanics, the dispositions of the measuring apparatus-plus-environment of the system measured for a property are a non-trivial part of its formalization as the quantum observable. A straightforward formalization of context, via equivalence classes of measurements corresponding to sets of sharp target observables, was recently given for sharp quantum observables. Here, we show that quantum contextuality, the dependence of measurement outcomes on circumstances external to the measured quantum system, can be manifested not only as the strict exclusivity of different measurements of sharp observables or valuations but via quantitative differences in the property statistics across simultaneous measurements of generalized quantum observables, by formalizing quantum context via coexistent generalized observables rather than only its subset of compatible sharp observables. Here, the question of whether such quantum contextuality follows from basic quantum principles is then addressed, and it is shown that the Principle of Indeterminacy is sufficient for at least one form of non-trivial contextuality. Contextuality is thus seen to be a natural feature of quantum mechanics rather than something arising only from the consideration of impossible measurements, abstract philosophical issues, hidden-variables theories, or other alternative, classical models of quantum behavior.

A fundamental problem in quantum computation and quantum information is finding the minimum quantum dimension needed for a task. For tasks involving state preparation and measurements, this problem can be addressed using only the input-output correlations. This has been applied to Bell, prepare-and-measure, and Kochen-Specker contextuality scenarios. Here, we introduce a novel approach to quantum dimension witnessing for scenarios with one preparation and several measurements, which uses the graphs of mutual exclusivity between sets of measurement events. We present the concepts and tools needed for graph-theoretic quantum dimension witnessing and illustrate their use by identifying novel quantum dimension witnesses, including a family that can certify arbitrarily high quantum dimensions with few events., 20 pages. We argue that the usual Bloch sphere is insufficient in various aspects for the representation of qubits in quantum information theory. For example, spin flip operations with the quaternions I J K = e 2 &pi, i 2 = &minus, 1 and J I K = + 1 cannot be distinguished on the Bloch sphere. We show that a simple knot theoretic extension of the Bloch sphere representation is sufficient to track all unitary operations for single qubits. Next, we extend the Bloch sphere representation to entangled states using knot theory. As applications, we first discuss contextuality in quantum physics&mdash, in particular the Kochen-Specker theorem. Finally, we discuss some arguments against many-worlds theories within our knot theoretic model of entanglement. The key ingredients of our approach are symmetries and geometric properties of the unitary group.

Recently, an inequality satisfied by non-contextual hidden-variable models and violated by quantum mechanics for all states of a four-level system has been derived based on information-theoretic distance approach to non-classical correlations. Cyclic systems of dichotomous random variables have played a prominent role in contextuality research, describing such experimental paradigms as the Klyachko-Can-Binicoglu-Shumovky, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bell, and Leggett-Garg ones in physics, as well as conjoint binary choices in human decision making. Here, we understand contextuality within the framework of the Contextuality-by-Default (CbD) theory, based on the notion of probabilistic couplings satisfying certain constraints. CbD allows us to drop the commonly made assumption that systems of random variables are consistently connected. Consistently connected systems constitute a special case in which CbD essentially reduces to the conventional understanding of contextuality. We present a theoretical analysis of the degree of contextuality in cyclic systems (if they are contextual) and the degree of noncontextuality in them (if they are not). By contrast, all previously proposed measures of contextuality are confined to consistently connected systems, and most of them cannot be extended to measures of noncontextuality. Our measures of (non)contextuality are defined by the L_{1}-distance between a point representing a cyclic system and the surface of the polytope representing all possible noncontextual cyclic systems with the same single-variable marginals. The operational characterization of contextuality is the cornerstone in the development of resource theory of contextuality. Here, we introduce contextual robustness as an operational measure of contextuality on empirical models. We first show that it satisfies all the properties a proper contextual measure should satisfy. Besides, we derive the linear programing of contextual robustness and prove that contextual robustness exactly characterizes the maximal violation of certain types of Bell inequalities. Moreover, we show that contextual robustness quantifies the accessible advantage of empiric models in measurement-based quantum computation, and provide a tighter upper bound on accessible advantage in certain cases.

Identifying necessary and sufficient conditions for universal quantum computing is a long-standing open problem for which contextuality is, perhaps, the only promising solution [Howard et al., Nature 510, 351 (2014)]. To justify this conjecture, Howard et al. showed that contextuality is equivalent to Wigner negativity for qudits, and is therefore necessary and possibly sufficient for qudit magic state distillation. This brief note is aimed to dissociate from quantum physics contextuality, where the latter is standardly defined on the basis of families of compatible observables. In quantum physics, contextuality is just an exhibition of incompatibility of observables and, hence, Bohr's principle of complementarity. At the same time we recognize that contextuality can play the important role outside of physics.

A dimension witness provides a device-independent certification of the minimal dimension required to reproduce the observed data without imposing assumptions on the functioning of the devices used to generate the experimental statistics. In this paper, we provide a family of Bell expressions where Alice and Bob perform ${2}^{n\ensuremath{-}1}$ and $n$ number of dichotomic measurements, respectively, which serve as the device-independent dimension witnesses of Hilbert space of ${2}^{m}$ dimensions with $m=1,2,...,{2}^{\ensuremath{\lfloor}n/2\ensuremath{\rfloor}}$. The family of Bell expressions considered here determines the success probability of a communication game known as the $n$-bit parity-oblivious random access code. The parity obliviousness constraint is equivalent to the preparation noncontextuality assumption in an ontological model of an operational theory. For any given $n\ensuremath{\ge}3$, if such a constraint is imposed on the encoding scheme of the random access code, then the local bound of the Bell expression reduces to the preparation noncontextual bound. We provide explicit examples for the $n=4\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{and}\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}5$ case to demonstrate that the relevant Bell expressions certify the qubit and two-qubit system, and for the $n=6$ case to demonstrate that the relevant Bell expression certifies the qubit, two-qubit, and three-qubit systems. We further demonstrate the sharing of quantum preparation contextuality by multiple Bobs sequentially to examine whether the number of Bobs sharing the preparation contextuality is dependent on the dimension of the system. We provide explicit examples of $n=5$ and 6 to demonstrate that the number of Bobs sequentially sharing the contextuality remains the same for any of the ${2}^{m}$-dimensional systems.

We identify a fundamental difference between classical and quantum dynamics in the linear response regime by showing that the latter is in general contextual. This allows us to provide an example of a quantum engine whose favorable power output scaling \emph{unavoidably} requires nonclassical effects in the form of contextuality. Furthermore, we describe contextual advantages for local metrology. Given the ubiquity of linear response theory, we anticipate that these tools will allow one to certify the nonclassicality of a wide array of quantum phenomena., 5+8 pages. According to what has become a standard history of quantum mechanics, in 1932 von Neumann persuaded the physics community that hidden variables are impossible as a matter of principle, after which leading proponents of the Copenhagen interpretation put the situation to good use by arguing that the completeness of quantum mechanics was undeniable. This state of affairs lasted, so the story continues, until Bell in 1966 exposed von Neumann’s proof as obviously wrong. The realization that von Neumann’s proof was fallacious then rehabilitated hidden variables and made serious foundational research possible again. It is often added in recent accounts that von Neumann’s error had been spotted almost immediately by Grete Hermann, but that her discovery was of no effect due to the dominant Copenhagen Zeitgeist. We shall attempt to tell a story that is more historically accurate and less ideologically charged. Most importantly, von Neumann never claimed to have shown the impossibility of hidden variables tout court, but argued that hidden-variable theories must possess a structure that deviates fundamentally from that of quantum mechanics. Both Hermann and Bell appear to have missed this point; moreover, both raised unjustified technical objections to the proof. Von Neumann’s argument was basically that hidden-variables schemes must violate the “quantum principle” that physical quantities are to be represented by operators in a Hilbert space. As a consequence, hidden-variables schemes, though possible in principle, necessarily exhibit a certain kind of contextuality. As we shall illustrate, early reactions to Bohm’s theory are in agreement with this account. Leading physicists pointed out that Bohm’s theory has the strange feature that pre-existing particle properties do not generally reveal themselves in measurements, in accordance with von Neumann’s result. They did not conclude that the “impossible was done” and that von Neumann had been shown wrong.

Violation of the quantum regression theorem and the Leggett–Garg inequality is studied by means of the exactly solvable multi-mode Jaynes–Cummings model. An exact expression of a two-time correlation function is compared with that derived by the quantum regression theorem. It is found that the quantum regression theorem is not valid even if the reduced time evolution of the qubit is Markovian. Furthermore, it is shown that if the quantum regression theorem is applied in this model, the Leggett–Garg inequality is satisfied while it is violated by the exact correlation function.

The 40 states of a spin-3/2 particle used by Zimba and Penrose to prove the Kochen–Specker and Bell theorems are shown to be identical (i.e., unitarily equivalent) in CP 3 to the 40 rays that follow from the vertices of the Witting polytope. The Witting polytope also gives rise to 120 rays in RP 7 that give rise to well over a billion parity proofs of the Kochen–Specker theorem. The implications of these results are discussed.

No-conspiracy is the requirement that measurement settings should be probabilistically independent of the elements of reality responsible for the measurement outcomes. In this paper we investigate what role no-conspiracy generally plays in a physical theory; how it influences the semantical role of the event types of the theory; and how it relates to such other concepts as separability, compatibility, causality, locality and contextuality.

The role of permutation gates for universal quantum computing is investigated. In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 250401 (2015)] the sharing of non-locality by multiple observers was demonstrated through the quantum violation of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Halt inequality. In this paper we provide a scheme for sharing of non-locality and non-trivial preparation contextuality sequentially through the quantum violation of a family of Bell's inequalities where Alice and Bob perform $2^{n-1}$ and $n$ numbers of measurements of dichotomic observables respectively. For this, we consider that Alice always performs projective measurement and multiple Bobs sequentially perform unsharp measurement. We show that when Bob's choices of measurement settings are unbiased, maximum two Bobs can sequentially share the non-locality through the violation of our inequalities. Further, we show that the local bound of the aforementioned family of inequalities gets reduced if non-trivial preparation non-contextuality assumptions are further imposed. Then there is a chance to share the non-trivial preparation contextuality for more number of Bobs than that of non-locality. We demonstrate that the non-trivial preparation contextuality can be sequentially shared by arbitrary numbers of Bob for unbiased choices of his measurement settings., 10 pages, 4 figures

Although this nondisturbance idealization has been extremely useful in investigating the limitations of physical theories, in this paper, we will work out a more robust and possibly more experimentally friendly framework for contextuality. Simply put, we will restate the extended definition of noncontextuality provided by the noncontextuality by default and show that in this extended perspective it is possible to avoid weakening the nondisturbance hypothesis. By doing so, we also show how standard tools for characterizing and quantifying contextuality can also be applied to this extended scenario. In particular, we came up with a linear program to check whether or not a behavior is contextual in the extended sense. The connection with the usual definition of contextuality is also established because whenever nondisturbance is fully satisfied the extended conditions reduce to the original ones.

Quantum contextuality is a source of quantum computational power and a theoretical delimiter between classical and quantum structures. It has been substantiated by numerous experiments and prompted generation of state independent contextual sets, that is, sets of quantum observables capable of revealing quantum contextuality for any quantum state of a given dimension. There are two major classes of state-independent contextual sets - the Kochen-Specker ones and the operator-based ones. In this paper, we present a third, hypergraph-based class of contextual sets. Hypergraph inequalities serve as a measure of contextuality. We limit ourselves to qutrits and obtain thousands of 3-dim contextual sets. The simplest of them involves only 5 quantum observables, thus enabling a straightforward implementation.
