Abstract

Neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for 0νββ decay of 130Te using an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of 130Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected 0νββ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of livetime is 1.6 × 1026 y at 1σ (9.5 × 1025 y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40–100 meV (50–130 meV). In this paper, we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

Abstract

A compact photoneutron source (PNS), based on an electron LINAC was designed and constructed to provide required experimental nuclear data for Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR). All devices including the LINAC, the neutron production target and the detector systems were arranged in a shared hall, leading to a high background of neutron and γ-ray. The necessary shielding design was made to reduce the backgrounds. A series of preliminary measurements of total cross section in thermal neutron energy region for some key nuclides of TMSR, such as 232Th and 7Li, have been performed at this PNS. It was found, however, that additional shielding needs to be constructed to further reduce the neutron and γ-ray backgrounds. MCNP is a major tool for the background shielding design since it has the calculation capability for a coupled neutron-photon-electron transport problem. A two-step subsection simulation based on MCNP involving with variance reduction techniques (Sub-Var method) was performed to provide required flux and spectrum calculation for the new background shielding design. Based on the simulated results, a new local shielding was designed and constructed, which can reduce the thermal neutron background by three orders of magnitude and the γ-ray background by two orders of magnitude. The neutron flux and energy spectrum were measured under the new shielding condition and compared with the simulated ones, showing a good agreement with each other in the thermal energy region. Therefore, a significant improved shielding for the PNS is achieved, which is expected to provide a required assurance for the future measurements of neutron cross section at the PNS.

Abstract

We present the latest development of measuring (γ, n) cross sections and giant dipole resonance (GDR) cross sections in the IAEA photonuclear data project. Photoneutron cross sections were measured for 21 isotopes below 2n threshold to construct the γ-ray strength function (γSF) with the γSF method; (γ, n) cross sections are used as experimental constraints on the model E1 and M1 γSFs from the Hartree–Fock–Bogolyubov plus quasi-particle random phase approximation based on the Gogny D1M interaction supplemented with the M1 upbend. GDR cross sections were measured for 11 nuclei from 9Be to 209Bi by direct neutron-multiplicity sorting with a flat-efficiency neutron detector toward a goal of resolving the long-standing discrepancy between the Livermore and Saclay data. We present γSFs for the Ni isotopic chain and GDR cross sections for 159Tb as well as those updated for 209Bi.

Abstract

Fast ignition inertial confinement fusion requires the production of a low-density channel in plasma with density scale-lengths of several hundred microns. The channel assists in the propagation of an ultra-intense laser pulse used to generate fast electrons which form a hot spot on the side of pre-compressed fusion fuel. We present a systematic characterization of an expanding laser-produced plasma using optical interferometry, benchmarked against three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. Magnetic fields associated with channel formation are probed using proton radiography, and compared to magnetic field structures generated in full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. We present observations of long-lived, straight channels produced by the Habara–Kodama–Tanaka whole-beam self-focusing mechanism, overcoming a critical barrier on the path to realizing fast ignition. Abstract

β-delayed one-proton emissions of ^{22}Si, the lightest nucleus with an isospin projection T_{z}=-3, are studied with a silicon array surrounded by high-purity germanium detectors. Properties of β-decay branches and the reduced transition probabilities for the transitions to the low-lying states of ^{22}Al are determined. Compared to the mirror β decay of ^{22}O, the largest value of mirror asymmetry in low-lying states by far, with δ=209(96), is found in the transition to the first 1^{+} excited state. Shell-model calculation with isospin-nonconserving forces, including the T=1, J=2, 3 interaction related to the s_{1/2} orbit that introduces explicitly the isospin-symmetry breaking force and describes the loosely bound nature of the wave functions of the s_{1/2} orbit, can reproduce the observed data well and consistently explain the observation that a large δ value occurs for the first but not for the second 1^{+} excited state of ^{22}Al. Our results, while supporting the proton-halo structure in ^{22}Al, might provide another means to identify halo nuclei.

Abstract

Laser and beam driven wakefields promise orders of magnitude increases in electric field gradients for particle accelerators for future applications. Key areas to explore include the emittance properties of the generated beams and overcoming the dephasing limit in the plasma. In this paper, the first in-depth study of the self-injection mechanism into wakefield structures from non-homogeneous cluster plasmas is provided using high-resolution two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The clusters which are typical structures caused by ejection of gases from a high-pressure gas jet have a diameter much smaller than the laser wavelength. Conclusive evidence is provided for the underlying mechanism that leads to particle trapping, comparing uniform and cluster plasma cases. The accelerated electron beam properties are found to be tunable by changing the cluster parameters. The mechanism explains enhanced beam charge paired with large transverse momentum and energy which has implications for the betatron x-ray flux. Finally, the impact of clusters on the high-power laser propagation behavior is discussed.

Abstract

In this article, we showcase the experimental results of methods to produce and characterize orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying high-power lasers. The OAM pulses were produced on the ASTRA laser of the Central Laser Facility using a continuous spiral phase plate. Three different characterization methods were then used to measure the OAM content of the beam. The methods that were used were a cylindrical lens diagnostic, an interferometric diagnostic, and a projective diagnostic. We further discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of each method in the context of high-power laser experiments.

Abstract

The β-delayed two-proton emission from 22Al was investigated experimentally through the implantation-decay method. A β-delayed two-proton decay branch from 22Al were identified based on the coincidence of the charged particles and γ-ray signals. The relative momentum ( q p p ) and the opening angle ( θ p p ) distributions of the two β-delayed protons are measured and a strong peak at q p p ∼ 20 MeV/c , as well as a peak at θ p p ∼ 30 ∘ are observed clearly. The β-delayed 2He emission from 22Al with a probability of 29 (13)% by fitting the experimental data with the results of Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

Resistive Plate Chambers have largely been used in High Energy Physics and Cosmic Ray research. In view of using this detector for calorimetry applications it is important to know the maximum measurable particle density, or its intrinsic linearity limit, which is tightly related to the dimension of the discharge region. In this paper we report the results of measurements performed at the Beam Test Facility (INFN National Laboratory of Frascati, Italy) where the intrinsic linearity of bakelite RPCs operated in streamer mode has been tested at different impinging particle densities.

Abstract

Shanghai laser electron gamma source (SLEGS) is an energy-variable gamma-ray source developed based on the inverse Compton scattering of 10640 nm photons from a 100 W CO 2 laser on 3.5 GeV electrons from the Shanghai Light Source. It produces gamma-rays in the energy range of 0.4–21.7 MeV with a flux of 10 5 –10 7 photons/s. A collimator system was designed to produce quasimonochromatic gamma-ray beams with a best possible bandwidth of 1.1%–4.4% and filter out the substandard gamma-rays. The collimator system composed of coarse and fine collimators, constitutes a critical component of the SLEGS. By Geant4 simulations, we show that the collimator system is effective in tuning beam bandwidths and regular dodecagonal beam spots at the target position.

Abstract

Shanghai HIgh repetition rate XFEL aNd Extreme light facility (SHINE) is a quasi-continuous wave hard X-ray free electron laser facility, which is currently under construction. The data storage system holds large volumes of data generated instantaneously during the operation. A combination architecture of relational database, non-relational database and the distributed file system is designed as the centralized data storage system serving to multiple application demands for SHINE. The storage of high-speed stream data such as waveform and image data is studied and relevant storage schemas are tested and compared. The optimized schema is identified finally.

Abstract

The energy levels and transition properties of In-like ions are investigated by using the multi-configuration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method. The results for the energy levels, transition probabilities, wavelengths, line strengths and lifetimes of In-like Cs VII—Pm XIII are reported. Relativistic effects and electron correlation are included. Our calculations agree well with the experimental and other theoretical values. The new data of energy levels and transition parameters are predicted. The level crossing happens between the configurations 5s 24f and 5s 25p with increasing nuclear charge. The transition frequencies are within the range of usual lasers because of the level crossing. In-like ions may be developed into atomic clock.

Abstract

In 2011 ARGO-YBJ experiment has reported a work to study the absolute rigidity scale of the primary cosmic ray particles based on the Moon's shadow observation. Given the progress in high energy hadronic interaction models with LHC data, in cosmic ray chemical composition measurement and in experimental data accumulation, more updates can be researched. This paper aims to further disentangle the composition dependence in absolute-energy-scale calibration by using specific moon-shadow data which mainly is comprised of light component cosmic rays. Results show that, 17% energy scale error is estimated from 3 TeV to 50 TeV. To validate the performance of this technique, the light component cosmic ray spectrum in the same energy region is shown. Abstract

In this letter, we investigate the effect of orbital angular momentum (OAM) on elastic photon-photon scattering in vacuum for the first time. We define exact solutions to the vacuum electro-magnetic wave equation which carry OAM. Using those, the expected coupling between three initialwaves is derived in the framework of an effective field theory based on the Euler-Heisenberg La-grangian and shows that OAM adds a signature to the generated photons thereby greatly improvingthe signal-to-noise ratio. Abstract

A theoretical and numerical investigation of non-ponderomotive absorption at laser intensities relevant to quantum electrodynamics is presented. It is predicted that there is a regime change in the dependence of fast electron energy on incident laser energy that coincides with the onset of pair production via the Breit-Wheeler process. This prediction is numerically verified via an extensive campaign of QED-inclusive particle-in-cell simulations. The dramatic nature of the power law shift leads to the conclusion that this process is a candidate for an unambiguous signature that future experiments on multi-petawatt laser facilities have truly entered the QED regime.

The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment and, in particular, the installation of all towers in the cryostat was completed in August 2016 and data taking started in spring 2017. In this contribution the achievement of the commissioning phase and the performance of the detector and the cryostat during the first physics run will be presented.

Abstract

We report on a search for double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$130Te to the first $$0^{+}$$0+ excited state of $$^{130}\hbox {Xe}$$130Xe using a $$9.8\,\hbox {kg}\cdot \hbox {yr}$$9.8kg·yr exposure of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$130Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double beta decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$T01+0ν>7.9·1023yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$T01+2ν>2.4·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$90%CL). Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}\hbox {yr}$$T01+0ν>1.4·1024yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$T01+2ν>2.5·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$90%CL).

Abstract

A method for controlling the energy of slowed-down RI beams with the goal energy of 20 MeV/u was developed at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. The 93Zr beam energy was successfully tuned to 20.2 MeV/u in a single step by adjusting its momentum selected by the first dipole magnet after a primary target. A method for particle identification was developed for the secondary reaction fragments at 50 MeV/u. The dispersive mode was applied to the ZeroDegree spectrometer to measure the momentum at the final focus F11. The reaction fragments were stopped in the multi-sampling ionization chamber (MUSIC) placed at F11, which measured the Δ E − E of the beam particles. In addition, the range R in MUSIC was determined with a resolution of 1.4 mm ( σ ) by using the energy ratio obtained from multi-sampled energy deposits. The atomic number was determined from the E − R correlation with a resolution of 0.15 ( σ ). To distinguish the charge state of the RI beam after the secondary reaction target, the range with the correction for the β dependence was combined with the mass-to-charge ratio determined from the time-of-flight and magnetic-rigidity measurements. A 5.6 σ separation was obtained between 92Zr 40 + and 90Zr 39 + using these two values.

Abstract

The Superconducting Analyzer for Multi-particles from Radioisotope beams, SAMURAI, with a large angular and momentum acceptance has entered into the phase of physics experiments. Several experiments have been already run with invariant mass spectroscopy using heavy ions and neutrons, as well as missing mass spectroscopy, by introducing detector arrays around the reaction target upstream of the dipole magnet. Many user devices will be introduced to be coupled with SAMURAI. In the Day-Two phase, an experimental program, SAMURAI08, was performed which took advantage of the large momentum acceptance property of SAMURAI. In this experiment, two or more particles with different Z and A / Z were detected at the focal plane in coincidence. Analysis details are reported as an example for similar experiment in future. A variety of experiments are waiting to be performed, which means that SAMURAI is now open for use by RIBF users.

Abstract

A new detection system with high detection efficiency and low detection threshold has been developed for charged-particle decay studies, including beta-delayed proton, alpha decay or direct proton emission from proton-rich nuclei. The performance was evaluated by using the beta-delayed proton emitter Si-24 produced by projectile fragmentation at the First Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou. Under a continuous-beam mode, the isotopes of interest were implanted into two double-sided silicon strip detectors, where the subsequent decays were measured and correlated to the preceding implantations by using position and time information. The system allows us to measure protons with energies down to about 200 keV without obvious 13 background in the proton spectrum. Further application of the detection system can be extended to the measurements of beta-delayed proton decay and the direct proton emission of more exotic proton-rich nuclei. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The isotopic production cross sections for the reactions of 136Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/u were obtained by using the inverse kinematics technique at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence of the cross sections was investigated systematically. It was found that for the light-mass products, the cross sections on carbon are larger than those on deuteron and proton. The measured cross sections on proton were compared with the previous data at higher reaction energies to study the energy dependence. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical calculations including both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes using PHITS and with the EPAX and SPACS empirical parameterizations.

Abstract

It has long been noticed that rapid short-term variations of high energy charged particle fluxes in near-Earth space occur more frequently several hours before the main shock of earthquakes. Physicists wish that this observation supply a possible precursor of strong earthquakes. Based on DEMETER data, we investigate statistical behaviors of flux fluctuations for high energy charged particles in near-Earth space. Long-term clustering, scaling, and universality in the temporal occurrence are found. There is high degree statistical similarity between high energy charged particle fluxes in near-Earth space and earthquakes. Thus, the observations of the high energy particle fluxes in near-Earth space may supply a useful tool in the study of earthquakes.

Abstract

The (^{12}N, ^{12}C) charge-exchange reaction at 175 MeV/u was developed as a novel probe for studying the isovector spin giant monopole resonance (IVSMR), whose properties are important for better understanding the bulk properties of nuclei and asymmetric nuclear matter. This probe, now available through the production of ^{12}N as a secondary rare-isotope beam, is exothermic, is strongly absorbed at the surface of the target nucleus, and provides selectivity for spin-transfer excitations. All three properties enhance the excitation of the IVSMR compared to other, primarily light-ion, probes, which have been used to study the IVSMR thus far. The ^{90}Zr(^{12}N,^{12}C) reaction was measured and the excitation energy spectra up to about 70 MeV for both the spin-transfer and non-spin-transfer channels were deduced separately by tagging the decay by γ emission from the ^{12}C ejectile. Besides the well-known Gamow-Teller and isobaric analog transitions, a clear signature of the IVSMR was identified. By comparing with the results from light-ion reactions on the same target nucleus and theoretical predictions, the suitability of this new probe for studying the IVSMR was confirmed.

Abstract

The CUORE experiment, a ton-scale cryogenic bolometer array, recently began operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The array represents a significant advancement in this technology, and in this work we apply it for the first time to a high-sensitivity search for a lepton-number-violating process: ^{130}Te neutrinoless double-beta decay. Examining a total TeO_{2} exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of (7.7±0.5) keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of (0.014±0.002) counts/(keV kg yr), we find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Including systematic uncertainties, we place a lower limit on the decay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.); the median statistical sensitivity of this search is 7.0×10^{24} yr. Combining this result with those of two earlier experiments, Cuoricino and CUORE-0, we find T_{1/2}^{0ν}(^{130}Te)>1.5×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date on this decay. Interpreting this result as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, we find m_{ββ}

Abstract

TeO2 bolometers have been used for many years to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 130-Te. CUORE, a tonne-scale TeO2 detector array, recently published the most sensitive limit on the half-life, $T_{1/2}^{0��} > 1.5 \times 10^{25}\,$yr, which corresponds to an upper bound of $140-400$~meV on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino. While it makes CUORE a world-leading experiment looking for neutrinoless double beta decay, it is not the only study that CUORE will contribute to in the field of nuclear and particle physics. As already done over the years with many small-scale experiments, CUORE will investigate both rare decays (such as the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130-Te and the hypothesized electron capture in 123-Te), and rare processes (e.g., dark matter and axion interactions). Abstract

Two-proton relative momentum ($q_{pp}$) and opening angle ($\theta_{pp}$) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at $q_{pp}\sim20$ MeV/c as well as a peak in $\theta_{pp}$ around 30$^\circ$ are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited $^{22}$Mg. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the $^{23}$Al case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited $^{22}$Mg is quite different from the $^{23}$Al case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process.

Abstract

Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of $^{130}$Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of live time is $1.6\times 10^{26}$ y at $1\sigma$ ($9.5\times10^{25}$ y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Abstract

CUORE, the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events, is an experiment searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te. The first CUORE dataset was acquired in May and June 2017 and consisted of 10.6 kg-yr of TeO2 exposure, with several days of calibration data before and after the physics dataset. We discuss here the initial performance of the CUORE detector and cryostat in this first dataset.

The CUORE detector consists of a segmented array of 988 TeO2 bolometers, organized in 19 towers and operated at a temperature of about 10 mK thanks to a custom cryogenic system which, besides the uncommon scale, observes several constraints from the radio-purity of the materials to the mechanical decoupling of the cooling systems. The successful commissioning of the CUORE cryogenic system has been completed early in 2016 and represents an outstanding achievement by itself. The installation of the detector proceeded along 2016 followed by the cooldown to base temperature at the beginning of 2017. The CUORE detector is now operational and has been taking science data since Spring 2017. With the first ∼3 weeks of collected data, we present here the most stringent constraint on the 130Te half-live for the neutrino-less double beta decay.

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to $\sim 10$ TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calibrations performed on ground. Finally we present the expected performance in space and give an overview of the mission key scientific goals., 45 pages, including 29 figures and 6 tables. Published in Astropart. Phys

Abstract

International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment and the installation of all towers in the cryostat was completed in August 2016: the experiment is now in data taking phase. In this talk, beyond updating the physics results from CUORE-0, we will discuss the achievements and technical challenges of the CUORE construction phase, with particular emphasis on the background reduction strategy, the performance of the detector during pre-operation and the projected first results from the full detector run.

Abstract

International audience; The decay of the lightest nucleus with Tz=−3 , 22 Si, was studied by a silicon array. A charged-particle group at 5600 (70) keV in the decay-energy spectrum was identified experimentally as β -delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state (IAS) of 22 Al. Experimental results of the IAS fed by a superallowed Fermi transition were compared with our large-scale shell-model calculations. The ground-state mass of 22 Si was obtained indirectly in the experiment for the first time. Two-proton separation energy for 22 Si is deduced to be −108 (125) keV, which indicates that it is a very marginal candidate for two-proton ground-state emission.

Abstract

We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life ($T_{1/2}^{0\nu}$) at $90\%$ credibility interval (CI) -- i.e. the interval containing the true value of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu}$ with $90\%$ probability -- and the $3 \sigma$ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a $90\%$ CI exclusion sensitivity of $2\cdot10^{25}$ yr with $3$ months, and $9\cdot10^{25}$ yr with $5$ years of live time. Under the same conditions, the discovery sensitivity after $3$ months and $5$ years will be $7\cdot10^{24}$ yr and $4\cdot10^{25}$ yr, respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pp}(q)$) for kinematically complete decay channels of $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne have been measured at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. From the very different correlation strength of $C_{pp}(q)$ for $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg, the source size and emission time information were extracted from the $C_{pp}(q)$ data by assuming a Gaussian source profile in the correlation function calculation code (CRAB). The results indicated that the mechanism of two-proton emission from $^{23}$Al was mainly sequential emission, while that of $^{22}$Mg was mainly three-body simultaneous emission. By combining our earlier results of the two-proton relative momentum and the opening angle, it is pointed out that the mechanism of two-proton emission could be distinguished clearly.

Abstract

International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a large-scale double beta decay experiment utilizing cryogenic bolometers that is currently being commissioned at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy. Its primary focus is to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with a projected sensitivity to Majorana neutrino masses near the inverted mass hierarchy region. The detector is composed of 988 5x5x5-cm3 TeO2 crystals of natural isotopic composition arranged in 19 towers of 52 crystals each, all housed in a common dilution refrigerator. A single CUORE-like tower, CUORE-0, was assembled and operated as a stand-alone detector for a period of approximately two years. In this report, the results from CUORE-0 and the current status and physics potential of CUORE are presented.

The detector, in the final stages of construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy), will start its operations in 2016. CUORE-0, its pilot experiment, has proven the feasibility of CUORE, demonstrating that the target background of 0.01 counts/keV/kg/y and the energy resolution of 5 keV are within reach. CUORE-0 also made the most precise measurement of the 2νββ decay. The expected sensitivity of CUORE to the 0νββ 130Te half-life is 9 •1025y, for 5 years of data taking. Here, we report the most recent results of CUORE-0, their implications for CUORE, and the current status of the CUORE experiment.

Abstract

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. The status of the CUORE experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Abstract

We describe in detail the methods used to obtain the lower bound on the lifetime of neutrinoless double-beta (0 nu beta beta) decay in Te-130 and the associated limit on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino using the CUORE-0 detector. CUORE-0 is a bolometric detector array located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that was designed to validate the background reduction techniques developed for CUORE, a next-generation experiment scheduled to come online in 2016. CUORE-0 is also a competitive 0 nu beta beta decay search in its own right and functions as a platform to further develop the analysis tools and procedures to be used in CUORE. These include data collection, event selection and processing, as well as an evaluation of signal efficiency. In particular, we describe the amplitude evaluation, thermal gain stabilization, energy calibration methods, and the analysis event selection used to create our final 0 nu beta beta search spectrum. We define our high level analysis procedures, with emphasis on the new insights gained and challenges encountered. We outline in detail our fitting methods near the hypothesized 0 nu beta beta decay peak and catalog the main sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we derive the 0 nu beta beta decay half-life limits previously reported for CUORE-0, T-1/2(0 nu) > 2.7 x 10(24) yr, and in combination with the Cuoricino limit, T-1/2(0 nu) > 4.0 x 10(24) yr.

Abstract

The clustering of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles in atomic nuclei results in the self-organization of various geometrical arrangements at the femtometer scale. The one-dimensional alignment of multiple $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles is known as linear-chain structure, evidence of which has been highly elusive. We show via resonant elastic and inelastic $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ scattering of a radioactive $^{10}\mathrm{Be}$ beam that excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus $^{14}\mathrm{C}$ agree with recent predictions of linear-chain structure based on an antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model.

The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment and, in particular, the installation of all towers in the cryostat was completed in 2016 and data taking started in 2017. In this conference we present the 0νββ decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). Based on these data, CUORE places a lower limit on the 0νββ decay half-life of (90% C.L.). We then discuss the latest updates in the analysis of background and in the evaluation of the half-life of 2νββ decay of 130Te.

Abstract

International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

Abstract

The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{130}$Te with an array of 988 TeO$_2$ bolometers arranged in 19 towers. CUORE-0, the first tower assembled according to the CUORE procedures, was built and commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, and took data from March 2013 to March 2015. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the CUORE-0 experiment, with an emphasis on the improvements made over a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. In particular, we demonstrate with CUORE-0 data that the design goals of CUORE are within reach., Comment: 39 pages, 26 figures

Abstract

CUORE is a 741kg array of TeO 2 bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. The detectoris being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If thetarget background of 0.01counts/(keVkgy) will be reached, in five years of data taking CUORE will have a 1˙halflife sensitivity of 10 26 y. CUORE-0 is a smaller experiment constructed to test and demonstrate the performancesexpected for CUORE. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring2013. The status and perspectives of CUORE will be discussed, and the first CUORE-0 data will be presented.Keywords: Double beta decay, Neutrino mass, Bolometers1. Abstract

The CUORE Crystal Validation Runs (CCVRs) have been carried out since the end of 2008 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, in order to test the performances and the radiopurity of the TeO$_2$ crystals produced at SICCAS (Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for the CUORE experiment. In this work the results of the first 5 validation runs are presented. Results have been obtained for bulk contaminations and surface contaminations from several nuclides. An extrapolation to the CUORE background has been performed., 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Hard photon emitted from energetic heavy ion collisions is of very interesting since it does not experience the late-stage nuclear interaction, therefore it is useful to explore the early-stage information of matter phase. In this work, we investigated the directed flow and elliptic flow for proton-neutron bremsstrahlung hard photons in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions. The positive directed flow and negative elliptic flow of directed photons are illustrated and they seem to be anti-correlated to the free proton's flow. Also we calculated the two-photon correlation functions from which the information of photon source was extracted, and while two-photon azimuthal correlations are presented as a good method to extract the elliptic flow parameter v2 of direct hard photons.

Abstract

Fragment yields of projectile fragmentation reactions using primary beams of 36,40Ar at 50 MeV/nucleon on 64 Ni target have been measured. Fragment yields of different isotopes were obtained for Z ≥ 5 in RIBLL fragment seperator. We compare the extracted yields to the predictions of the empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross-sections(EPAX) and Statistical Abration-Ablation model(SAA) considering the RIBLL separator transmission rate. Isotope yield ratios between these 2 reactions were calculated, isoscaling parameters α and β, their dependence on fragment atomic number Z and neutron number N were calculated.

Abstract

The deformed projectiles and targets are expected to play different roles in heavy-ion collisions (HICs) at intermediate energy compared with spherical ones. With an isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IDQMD) model, in despite of averaging all the orientations of axisymmetric deformed 24 Mg + 24 Mg collisions, it is still found that NN collision number, nuclear stopping power (R) and multiplicity of fragments have considerable differences compared with spherical 24 Mg + 24 Mg collisions.
