Light with suppressed quantum fluctuations is desirable for a lot of applications. There are several approaches to suppress a noise including Kerr squeezing in optical fibres. Silica fibres are commonly used for this purpose. Here we propose to use highly nonlinear tellurite glass fibres for Kerr squeezing of CW laser field and demonstrate by simulations in the framework of the stochastic generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation the possibility of –20 dB noise suppression. In simulations, Raman terms and losses are switched on and switched off to find their contributions to the limits of squeezing. The analytical estimates without loss and with lumped loss are also given.

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) generated in microresonators with whispering gallery modes are demanded for different applications including telecommunications. Extending operating spectral ranges is an important problem for wavelength-division multiplexing systems based on microresonators. We demonstrate experimentally three spectrally separated OFCs in the C-, U-, and E-bands in silica microspheres which, in principle, can be used for telecommunication applications. For qualitative explanation of the OFC generation in the sidebands, we calculated gain coefficients and gain bandwidths for degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) processes. We also attained a regime when the pump frequency was in the normal dispersion range and only two OFCs were generated. The first OFC was near the pump frequency and the second Raman-assisted OFC with a soliton-like spectrum was in the U-band. Numerical simulation based on the Lugiato–Lefever equation was performed to support this result and demonstrate that the Raman-assisted OFC may be a soliton.

Broadband quantum noise suppression of light is required for many applications, including detection of gravitational waves, quantum sensing, and quantum communication. Here, using numerical simulations, we investigate the possibility of polarization squeezing of ultrashort soliton pulses in an optical fiber with an enlarged mode field area, such as large-mode area or multicore fibers (to scale up the pulse energy). Our model includes the second-order dispersion, Kerr and Raman effects, quantum noise, and optical losses. In simulations, we switch on and switch off Raman effects and losses to find their contribution to squeezing of optical pulses with different durations (0.1–1 ps). For longer solitons, the peak power is lower and a longer fiber is required to attain the same squeezing as for shorter solitons, when Raman effects and losses are neglected. In the full model, we demonstrate optimal pulse duration (~0.4 ps) since losses limit squeezing of longer pulses and Raman effects limit squeezing of shorter pulses.

Free-space optical communication is a promising means to establish versatile, secure and high-bandwidth communication between mobile nodes for many critical applications. While the spatial modes of light offer a degree of freedom to increase the information capacity of an optical link, atmospheric turbulence can introduce severe distortion to the spatial modes and lead to data degradation. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a vector-beam-based, turbulence-resilient communication protocol, namely spatial polarization differential phase shift keying (SPDPSK), that can reliably transmit high-dimensional information through a turbulent channel without the need of any adaptive optics for beam compensation. In a proof-of-principle experiment with a controllable turbulence cell, we measure a channel capacity of 4.84 bits per pulse using 34 vector modes through a turbulent channel with a scintillation index of 1.09, and 4.02 bits per pulse using 18 vector modes through even stronger turbulence corresponding to a scintillation index of 1.54., Resistance to turbulence is an ongoing challenge for point-to-point freespace communications. Here the authors present a protocol for encoding a large amount of information in vector beams that are transmittable through a moderately strong turbulent channel without adaptive beam compensation.

Light is a vector field often displaying a complex structure. Parameters such as amplitude, phase and the polarization, i.e., the direction of the electric field vector may change drastically in space even over sub-wavelength dimensions, giving rise to exotic properties such as phase singularities, polarization vortices and exotic angular momenta. These properties of light can be measured by letting it interact with sub-wavelength particles and detecting the scattered light. In reverse, by illuminating a small particle with properly designed light one can steer the scattered light and sensitively measure the particle position. These and related effects will be reviewed.

Agile cryptography allows for a resource-efficient swap of a cryptographic core in case the security of an underlying classical cryptographic algorithm becomes compromised. Conversely, versatile cryptography allows the user to switch the cryptographic task without requiring any knowledge of its inner workings. In this paper, we suggest how these related principles can be applied to the field of quantum cryptography by explicitly demonstrating two quantum cryptographic protocols, quantum digital signatures (QDS) and quantum secret sharing (QSS), on the same hardware sender and receiver platform. Crucially, the protocols differ only in their classical post-processing. The system is also suitable for quantum key distribution (QKD) and is highly compatible with deployed telecommunication infrastructures, since it uses standard quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) encoding and heterodyne detection. For the first time, QDS protocols are modified to allow for postselection at the receiver, enhancing protocol performance. The cryptographic primitives QDS and QSS are inherently multipartite and we prove that they are secure not only when a player internal to the task is dishonest, but also when (external) eavesdropping on the quantum channel is allowed. In our first proof-of-principle demonstration of an agile and versatile quantum communication system, the quantum states were distributed at GHz rates. This allows for a one-bit message to be securely signed using our QDS protocols in less than 0.05 ms over a 2 km fiber link and in less than 0.2~s over a 20 km fiber link. We train convolutional neural networks to predict whether or not a set of measurements is informationally complete to uniquely reconstruct any given quantum state with no prior information. In addition, we perform fidelity benchmarking based on this measurement set without explicitly carrying out state tomography. The networks are trained to recognize the fidelity and a reliable measure for informational completeness. By gradually accumulating measurements and data, these trained convolutional networks can efficiently establish a compressive quantum-state characterization scheme by accelerating runtime computation and greatly reducing systematic drifts in experiments. We confirm the potential of this machine-learning approach by presenting experimental results for both spatial-mode and multiphoton systems of large dimensions. These predictions are further shown to improve when the networks are trained with additional bootstrapped training sets from real experimental data. Using a realistic beam-profile displacement error model for Hermite-Gaussian sources, we further demonstrate numerically that the orders-of-magnitude reduction in certification time with trained networks greatly increases the computation yield of a large-scale quantum processor using these sources, before state fidelity deteriorates significantly., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, relevant GitHub repository: https://github.com/ACAD-repo/ICCNet-FidNet (Changes since v1: Updated Fig. 8 and caption, new Sec. We comprehensively review the quantum theory of the polarization properties of light. In classical optics, these traits are characterized by the Stokes parameters, which can be geometrically interpreted using the Poincar\'e sphere. Remarkably, these Stokes parameters can also be applied to the quantum world, but then important differences emerge: now, because fluctuations in the number of photons are unavoidable, one is forced to work in the three-dimensional Poincar\'e space that can be regarded as a set of nested spheres. Additionally, higher-order moments of the Stokes variables might play a substantial role for quantum states, which is not the case for most classical Gaussian states. This brings about important differences between these two worlds that we review in detail. In particular, the classical degree of polarization produces unsatisfactory results in the quantum domain. We compare alternative quantum degrees and put forth that they order various states differently. We introduce a reliable compressive procedure to uniquely characterize any given low-rank quantum measurement using a minimal set of probe states that is based solely on data collected from the unknown measurement itself. The procedure is most compressive when the measurement constitutes pure detection outcomes, requiring only an informationally complete number of probe states that scales linearly with the system dimension. We argue and provide numerical evidence showing that the minimal number of probe states needed is even generally below the numbers known in the closely-related classical phase-retrieval problem because of the quantum constraint. We also present affirmative results with polarization experiments that illustrate significant compressive behaviors for both two- and four-qubit detectors just by using random product probe states., 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table (updated content and 2 new figures since last version)

Hybrid quantum information processing combines the advantages of discrete and continues variable protocols by realizing protocols consisting of photon counting and homodyne measurements. However, the mode structure of pulsed sources and the properties of the detection schemes often require the use optical filters in order to combine both detection methods in a common experiment. This limits the efficiency and the overall achievable squeezing of the experiment. In our work, we use photon subtraction to implement the distillation of pulsed squeezed states originating from a genuinely spatially and temporally single-mode parametric down-conversion source in non-linear waveguides. Due to the distillation, we witness an improvement of $0.17~\mathrm{dB}$ from an initial squeezing value of $-1.648 \pm 0.002~\mathrm{dB}$, while achieving a purity of $0.58$, and confirm the non-Gaussianity of the distilled state via the higher-order cumulants. With this, we demonstrate the source's suitability for scalable hybrid quantum network applications with pulsed quantum light.

Topological properties of light attract tremendous attention in the optics communities and beyond. For instance, light beams gain robustness against certain deformations when carrying topological features, enabling intriguing applications. We report on the observation of a topological structure contained in an optical beam, i.e., a twisted ribbon formed by the electric field vector per se, in stark contrast to recently reported studies dealing with topological structures based on the distribution of the time averaged polarization ellipse. Moreover, our ribbons are spinning in time at a frequency given by the optical frequency divided by the total angular momentum of the incoming beam. The number of full twists of the ribbon is equal to the orbital angular momentum of the longitudinal component of the employed light beam upon tight focusing, which is a direct consequence of spin-to-orbit coupling. We study this angular-momentum-transfer-assisted generation of the twisted ribbon structures theoretically and experimentally for tightly focused circularly polarized beams of different vorticity, paving the way to tailored topologically robust excitations of novel coherent light–matter states.

We propose a simple, highly scalable, and very efficient scheme for coherent combining of tiled aperture arrays. The scheme relies on changing the beam phasing paradigm from the commonly used in-phase pattern to the out-of-phase pattern (interleaved 0 / π phases in the neighboring channels) and using an additional simple combining stage (a beamsplitter). In a proof-of-concept experiment with a one-dimensional fiber array, we achieved 89% of the power in the main combined beam. In numerical modeling, we found optimal conditions leading to 98% efficiency for an unlimited number of channels and arbitrary small initial aperture fill factors. The scheme is highly resistant to the effect of sub-aperture clipping and suitable for combining ultrashort pulses.

We establish the ultimate limits that quantum theory imposes on the accuracy attainable in optical ellipsometry. We show that the standard quantum limit, as usual reached when the incident light is in a coherent state, can be surpassed with the use of appropriate squeezed states and, for tailored beams, even pushed to the ultimate Heisenberg limit., To be published in Optics Letters

We investigate the frequency-resolved intensity noise spectrum of an Yb-doped fiber amplifier down to the fundamental limit of quantum noise. We focus on the kHz and low MHz frequency regime with special interest in the region between 1 and 10 kHz. Intensity noise levels up to $$\ge$$ ≥ 60 dB above the shot noise limit are found, revealing great optimization potential. Additionally, two seed lasers with different noise characteristics were amplified, showing that the seed source has a significant impact and should be considered in the design of high power fiber amplifiers.

A bright squeezed vacuum (BSV) is a nonclassical macroscopic state of light, which is generated through high-gain parametric down-conversion or four-wave mixing. Although the BSV is an important tool in quantum optics and has a lot of applications, its theoretical description is still not complete. In particular, the existing description in terms of Schmidt modes with gain-independent shapes fails to explain the spectral broadening observed in the experiment as the mean number of photons increases. Meanwhile, the semiclassical description accounting for the broadening does not allow us to decouple the intermodal photon-number correlations. In this work, we present a new generalized theoretical approach to describe the spatial properties of a multimode BSV. In the multimode case, one has to take into account the complicated interplay between all involved modes: each plane-wave mode interacts with all other modes, which complicates the problem significantly. The developed approach is based on exchanging the (k, t ) and (ω, z) representations and solving a system of integrodifferential equations. Our approach predicts correctly the dynamics of the Schmidt modes and the broadening of the angular distribution with the increase in the BSV mean photon number due to a stronger pumping. Moreover, the model correctly describes various properties of a widely used experimental configuration with two crystals and an air gap between them, namely, an SU(1,1) interferometer. In particular, it predicts the narrowing of the intensity distribution, the reduction and shift of the side lobes, and the decline in the interference visibility as the mean photon number increases due to stronger pumping. The presented experimental results confirm the validity of the new approach. The model can be easily extended to the case of the frequency spectrum, frequency Schmidt modes, and other experimental configurations.

We discuss a novel implementation of the minimum error state discrimination measurement, originally introduced by Helstrom. In this implementation, instead of performing the optimal projective measurement directly on the system, it is first entangled to an ancillary system and the measurement is performed on the ancilla. We show that, by an appropriate choice of the entanglement transformation, the Helstrom bound can be attained. The advantage of this approach is twofold. First, it provides a novel implementation when the optimal projective measurement cannot be directly performed. For example, in the case of continuous variable states (binary and N phase-shifted coherent signals), the available detection methods, photon counting and homodyning, are insufficient to perform the required cat-state projection. In the case of symmetric states, the square-root measurement is optimal, but it is not easy to perform directly for more than two states. Our approach provides a feasible alternative in both cases. Second, the measurement is non-destructive from the point of view of the original system and one has a certain amount of freedom in designing the post-measurement state, which can then be processed further., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We present a compressive quantum process tomography scheme that fully characterizes any rank-deficient completely-positive process with no a priori information about the process apart from the dimension of the system on which the process acts. It uses randomly-chosen input states and adaptive output von Neumann measurements. Both entangled and tensor-product configurations are flexibly employable in our scheme, the latter which naturally makes it especially compatible with many-body quantum computing. Two main features of this scheme are the certification protocol that verifies whether the accumulated data uniquely characterize the quantum process, and a compressive reconstruction method for the output states. We emulate multipartite scenarios with high-order electromagnetic transverse modes and optical fibers to positively demonstrate that, in terms of measurement resources, our assumption-free compressive strategy can reconstruct quantum processes almost equally efficiently using all types of input states and basis measurement operations, operations, independent of whether or not they are factorizable into tensor-product states., 7 pages, 4 figures

We present analytic expressions for the $s$-parametrized currents on the sphere for both unitary and dissipative evolutions. We examine the spatial distribution of the flow generated by these currents for quadratic Hamiltonians. We present a compressed-sensing inspired method to ascertain any rank-deficient qudit state, which we experimentally encode in photonic orbital angular momentum. Our technique provides an easy and accurate way to identify quantum sources and systems.

Photon pairs and heralded single photons, obtained from cavity-assisted parametric down conversion (PDC), play an important role in quantum communications and technology. This motivated a thorough study of the spectral and temporal properties of parametric light, both above the optical parametric oscillator (OPO) threshold, where the semiclassical approach is justified, and deeply below it, where the linear cavity approximation is applicable. The pursuit of a higher two-photon emission rate leads into an interesting intermediate regime, between above OPO threshold and very low pump power, where the OPO still operates considerably below the threshold but the nonlinear cavity phenomena cannot be neglected anymore. Here, we investigate this intermediate regime and show that the spectral and temporal properties of the photon pairs, as well as their emission rate, may significantly differ from the widely accepted linear model. The observed phenomena include frequency pulling and broadening in the temporal correlation for the down-converted optical fields. These factors need to be taken into account when devising practical applications of the high-rate cavity-assisted spontaneous PDC sources.

We present advances in the use of gigahertz LiNbO3 modulators enabling us programmable delays, which we will use to implement a multiplexed single-photon source, based on birefringent phase-matching in KTP waveguides.

An efficient optical scheme for coherent combining of radiation from the output of a multicore fiber (MCF) with a square array of cores in the out-of-phase supermode is proposed. The scheme uses only simple optical elements and is suitable for an arbitrary number of MCF cores. In a proof-of-concept experiment broadband pulses transmitted through a 25-core fiber were combined with 81% efficiency and good beam quality. In numerical modeling a close to unity efficiency is obtained for a large number of cores. The proposed scheme can be used in a reverse direction for efficient beam splitting and launching the out-of-phase supermode into the MCF.

We examine the propagation of optical beams possessing different polarization states and spatial modes through the Ottawa River in Canada. A Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor is used to record the distorted beam's wavefront. The turbulence in the underwater channel is analysed, and associated Zernike coefficients are obtained in real-time. Finally, we explore the feasibility of transmitting polarization states as well as spatial modes through the underwater channel for applications in quantum cryptography., 5 pages, 4 figures. Background Focusing with a 4 π parabolic mirror allows for concentrating light from nearly the complete solid angle, whereas focusing with a single microscope objective limits the angle cone used for focusing to half solid angle at maximum. Increasing the solid angle by using deep parabolic mirrors comes at the cost of adding more complexity to the mirror’s fabrication process and might introduce errors that reduce the focusing quality. Methods To determine these errors, we experimentally examine the focusing properties of a 4 π parabolic mirror that was produced by single-point diamond turning. The properties are characterized with a single 174Yb + ion as a mobile point scatterer. The ion is trapped in a vacuum environment with a movable high optical access Paul trap. Results We demonstrate an effective focal spot size of 209 nm in lateral and 551 nm in axial direction. Such tight focusing allows us to build an efficient light-matter interface. Conclusion Our findings agree with numerical simulations incorporating a finite ion temperature and interferometrically measured wavefront aberrations induced by the parabolic mirror. We point at further technological improvements and discuss the general scope of applications of a 4 π parabolic mirror.

Coherent beam combining refers to the process of generating a bright output beam by merging independent input beams of individually diffusing relative phases by locking them to each other. We report the first quantum mechanical noise limit calculations for coherent beam combining and compare our results to quantum-limited amplification. Our coherent beam combining scheme is based on an optical Fourier transformation which renders the scheme compatible with integrated optics combined with feed-back stabilization of the relative phases. The scheme can be layed out for an arbitrary number of input beams and approaches the shot noise limit for a large number of inputs.

Extreme events appear in many physics phenomena, whenever the probability distribution has a ``heavy tail'' differing very much from the equilibrium one. Most unusual are the cases of power-law (Pareto) probability distributions. Among their many manifestations in physics, from ``rogue waves'' in the ocean to L\'evy flights in random walks, Pareto dependences can follow very different power laws. For some outstanding cases, the power exponents are less than 2, leading to indefinite values not only for higher moments but also for the mean. Here we present the first evidence of indefinite-mean Pareto distribution of photon numbers at the output of nonlinear effects pumped by parametrically amplified vacuum noise, known as bright squeezed vacuum (BSV). We observe a Pareto distribution with power exponent 1.31 when BSV is used as a pump for supercontinuum generation, and other heavy-tailed distributions (however, with definite moments) when it pumps optical harmonics generation. Unlike in other fields, we can flexibly control the Pareto exponent by changing the experimental parameters. This extremely fluctuating light is interesting for ghost imaging and for quantum thermodynamics as a resource to produce more efficiently nonequilibrium states by single-photon subtraction, the latter of which we demonstrate experimentally.

The capability to distinguish the handedness of circularly polarized light is a well known intrinsic property of a chiral nanostructure. It is a long standing controversial debate, however, whether a chiral object can also sense the vorticity, or the orbital angular momentum OAM , of a light field. Since OAM is a non local property, it seems rather counter intuitive that a point like chiral object could be able to distinguish the sense of the wave front of light carrying OAM. Here, we show that a dipolar chiral nanostructure is indeed capable of distinguishing the sign of the phase vortex of the incoming light beam. To this end, we take advantage of the conversion of the sign of OAM, carried by a linearly polarized Laguerre Gaussian beam, into the sign of optical chirality upon tight focusing. Our study provides for a deeper insight into the discussion of chiral light matter interactions and the respective role of OAM

The ability to completely characterize the state of a quantum system is an essential element for the emerging quantum technologies. Here, we present a compressed-sensing inspired method to ascertain any rank-deficient qudit state, which we experimentally encode in photonic orbital angular momentum. We efficiently reconstruct these qudit states from a few scans with an intensified CCD camera. Since it requires only a few intensity measurements, our technique would provide an easy and accurate way to identify quantum sources, channels, and systems., 4 pages. Comments welcome

Optical frequency combs (OFCs) are light sources whose spectra consists of equally spaced frequency lines in the optical domain [1]. They have great potential for improving high-capacity data transfer, all-optical atomic clocks, spectroscopy, and high-precision measurements [2].

Electromagnetic plane waves, solutions to Maxwell's equations, are said to be `transverse' in vacuum. Namely, the waves' oscillatory electric and magnetic fields are confined within a plane transverse to the waves' propagation direction. Under tight-focusing conditions however, the field can exhibit longitudinal electric or magnetic components, transverse spin angular momentum, or non-trivial topologies such as M\"obius strips. Here, we show that when a suitably spatially structured beam is tightly focused, a 3-dimensional polarization topology in the form of a ribbon with two full twists appears in the focal volume. We study experimentally the stability and dynamics of the observed polarization ribbon by exploring its topological structure for various radii upon focusing and for different propagation planes., Comment: 10 pages, and 4 figures

We investigate the emission of single photons from CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods which are optically trapped in the focus of a deep parabolic mirror. Thanks to this mirror, we are able to image almost the full 4$\pi$ emission pattern of nanometer-sized elementary dipoles and verify the alignment of the rods within the optical trap. From the motional dynamics of the emitters in the trap we infer that the single-photon emission occurs from clusters comprising several emitters. We demonstrate the optical trapping of rod-shaped quantum emitters in a configuration suitable for efficiently coupling an ensemble of linear dipoles with the electromagnetic field in free space., Comment: updated version after review, including supplementary material as appendix

We perform several numerical studies for our recently published adaptive compressive tomography scheme [D. Ahn et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 100404 (2019)], which significantly reduces the number of measurement settings to unambiguously reconstruct any rank-deficient state without any a priori knowledge besides its dimension. We show that both entangled and product bases chosen by our adaptive scheme perform comparably well with recently-known compressed-sensing element-probing measurements, and also beat random measurement bases for low-rank quantum states. We also numerically conjecture asymptotic scaling behaviors for this number as a function of the state rank for our adaptive schemes. These scaling formulas appear to be independent of the Hilbert space dimension. As a natural development, we establish a faster hybrid compressive scheme that first chooses random bases, and later adaptive bases as the scheme progresses. In this review we discuss intriguing properties of apparently classical optical fields, that go beyond purely classical context and allow us to speak about quantum characteristics of such fields and about their applications in quantum technologies. We briefly define the genuinely quantum concepts of entanglement and steering. We then move to the boarder line between classical and quantum world introducing quantum discord, a more general concept of quantum coherence, and finally a controversial notion of classical entanglement. To unveil the quantum aspects of often classically perceived systems, we focus more in detail on quantum discordant correlations between the light modes and on nonseparability properties of optical vector fields leading to entanglement between different degrees of freedom of a single beam. To illustrate the aptitude of different types of correlated systems to act as quantum or quantum-like resource, entanglement activation from discord, high-precision measurements with classical entanglement and quantum information tasks using intra-system correlations are discussed.
