Abstract

We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5 % most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158A GeV. We find evidence of power-law fluctuations for the Si+Si data. The fitted power-law exponent Φ[subscript 2] = 0.96[superscript +0.38][subscript -0.25] (stat.) ± 0.16 (syst.) is consistent with the value expected for critical fluctuations. Power-law fluctuations had previously also been observed in low-mass π[superscript +] π[superscript 1-] pairs in the same Si+Si collisions., United States. Abstract

Strange particle production in A+A interactions at 158 AGeV is studied by the CERN experiment NA49 as a function of system size and collision geometry. Yields of charged kaons, phi and Lambda are measured and compared to those of pions in central C+C, Si+Si and centrality-selected Pb+Pb reactions. An overall increase of relative strangeness production with the size of the system is observed which does not scale with the number of participants. Arguing that rescattering of secondaries plays a minor role in small systems the observed strangeness enhancement can be related to the space-time density of the primary nucleon-nucleon collisions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Presented at Quark Matter 2002, Nantes, France

Abstract

The latest NA49 results on fluctuations of multiplicity and average transverse-momentum analyzed on an event-by-event basis are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). The scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution decreases with collision energy whereas the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ measure of $$ fluctuations is small and independent of collision energy. Abstract

The momentum correlation between protons and Lambda particles emitted from central Pb+Pb collisions at √sNN = 17.3 GeV was studied by the NA49 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. A clear enhancement is observed for small relative momenta (qinv < 0.2 GeV). By fitting a theoretical model, which uses the strong interaction between the proton and the Lambda in a given pair, to the measured data, a value for the effective source size is deduced. Assuming a static Gaussian source distribution, we derive an effective radius parameter of RG = 3.02 ± 0.20(stat.)+0.44 −0.16(syst.) fm.

Abstract

The yields of (anti)protons were measured by the NA49 Collaboration in centrality-selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40Aand 158A GeV. Particle identification was obtained in the laboratory momentum range from 5 to 63 GeV/c by measuring the energy loss dE/dx in the time projection chamber detector gas. The corresponding rapidity coverage extends 1.6 units from midrapidity into the forward hemisphere. Transverse-mass spectra, the rapidity dependences of the average transverse mass, and rapidity density distributions were studied as a function of collision centrality. The values of the average transverse mass as well as the midrapidity yields of protons normalized to the number of wounded nucleons show only modest centrality dependences. In contrast, the shape of the rapidity distribution changes significantly with collision centrality, especially at 40AGeV. The experimental results are compared to calculations of the hadron-string dynamics and the ultrarelativistic quantum-moleculardynamics transport models.

Abstract

Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities: strangeness and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated parton-hadron phase boundary. Fluctuations of the (K++ K−)/(p + ¯p) and K+/p ratios have been measured for the first time by NA49 in central Pb + Pb collisions at five CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies between √sNN = 6.3 and √sNN = 17.3 GeV. Both ratios exhibit a change of sign in σdyn, a measure of nonstatistical fluctuations, around √sNN = 8 GeV. Below this energy, σdyn is positive, indicating higher fluctuation compared to a mixed event background sample, while for higher energies, σdyn is negative, indicating correlated emission of kaons and protons. The results are compared to hadronic transport model calculations which fail to reproduce the energy dependence.

Abstract

Source imaging methodology is used to provide a three-dimensional two-pion source function for midrapidity pion pairs with pT < 70 MeV/c in central (0–7%) Pb + Pb collisions at √sNN = 17.3 GeV. Prominent non-Gaussian tails are observed in the pion pair transverse momentum (outward) and in the beam (longitudinal) directions. Model calculations reproduce them with the assumption of Bjorken longitudinal boost invariance and transverse flow blast-wave dynamics ; they also yield a proper time for breakup and emission duration for the pion source.

Abstract

Lattice QCD calculations locate the QCD critical point at energies accessible at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). We present average transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations, as well as baryon and anti-baryon transverse mass spectra which are expected to be sensitive to effects of the critical point. Abstract

We present measurements of the energy dependence of event-by-event fluctuations in the K/pi and (p+ anti-p)/pi multiplicity ratios in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, sqrt(sNN), between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/pi ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+anti-p)/pi ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/pi ratio fluctuations.

Abstract

New data on the production of protons, anti-protons and neutrons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The charged baryons are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system. Neutrons are detected in a forward hadronic calorimeter. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c (0 to 1.5 GeV/c) in transverse momentum and from -0.05 to 0.95 (-0.05 to 0.4) in Feynman x for protons (anti-protons), respectively. pT integrated neutron cross sections are given in the interval from 0.1 to 0.9 in Feynman x. The data are compared to a wide sample of existing results in the SPS and ISR energy ranges as well as to proton and neutron measurements from HERA and RHIC., 69 pages, 72 figures

Abstract

Results on Lambda, anti-Lambda, and Xi- production in centrality selected Pb+Pb reactions at 40A and 158A GeV and in near-central C+C and Si+Si reactions at 158A GeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities in dependence of the system size are discussed. Comparisons to transport models (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron string dynamics) and to the core-corona approach are performed. Although Lambda and anti-Lambda production can be described by transport models reasonably well, these models do not agree with the Xi- measurements. However, the core-corona picture fits very well the system-size dependence of Lambda and Xi-, whereas it agrees less well with the anti-Lambda data.

Abstract

Results are presented on event-by-event fluctuations of transverse momenta $p_T$ in central Pb+Pb interactions at 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV. The analysis was performed for charged particles at forward center-of-mass rapidity ($1.1 < y^{*}_�� < 2.6$). Three fluctuation measures were studied: the distribution of average transverse momentum - $M(p_T)$ - in the event, the $��_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and two-particle transverse momentum correlations. Fluctuations of $p_T$ are small and show no significant energy dependence in the energy range of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Results are compared with QCD-inspired predictions for the critical point, and with the UrQMD model. Transverse momentum fluctuations, similar to multiplicity fluctuations, do not show the increase expected for freeze-out near the critical point of QCD., Published in Phys. Rev. C

Abstract

Phi meson production is studied by the NA49 Collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. The data are compared with measurements at lower and higher energies and with microscopic and thermal models. The energy dependence of yields and spectral distributions is compatible with the assumption that partonic degrees of freedom set in at low SPS energies.

Abstract

Results on Lambda, anti-Lambda, Xi-, and antiXi+ production in central Pb+Pb reactions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV are presented. The energy dependence of transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities is discussed. Comparisons to string hadronic models (UrQMD and HSD) and statistical hadron gas models are shown. Although the latter provide a reasonable description of all particle yields, the first class of models fails to match the Xi- and anti-Xi+ multiplicities.

Abstract

Multiplicity fluctuations of positively, negatively, and all charged hadrons in the forward hemisphere were studied in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. The multiplicity distributions and their scaled variances omega are presented as functions of their dependence on collision energy as well as on rapidity and transverse momentum. The distributions have bell-like shapes and their scaled variances are in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 without any significant structure in their energy dependence. No indication of the critical point in fluctuations are observed. The string-hadronic ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model significantly overpredicts the mean, but it approximately reproduces the scaled variance of the multiplicity distributions. The predictions of the statistical hadron-resonance gas model obtained within the grand-canonical and canonical ensembles disagree with the measured scaled variances. The narrower than Poissonian multiplicity fluctuations measured in numerous cases may be explained by the impact of conservation laws on fluctuations in relativistic systems.

Abstract

Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of pi+-, p, anti-p, and K+- in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at sqrt(sNN)=17.3 GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors RAA for pi+- and RCP for pi+-, p, anti-p, K+- were extracted and compared with results obtained at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV. The modification factor RAA shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor RCP, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the pi+- channel. The extracted RCP values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for pi+- above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

Abstract

Results on charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A and 30A GeV are presented and compared to data at lower and higher energies. Around 30A GeV a rapid change of the energy dependence for the yields of pions and kaons as well as for the shape of the transverse mass spectra is observed. The change is compatible with the prediction that the threshold for production of a state of deconfined matter at the early stage of the collisions is located at low CERN Super Proton Synchroton energies.

Abstract

Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of pi-pi- pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton for beam energies of 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally co-moving ``out-side-long'' reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse momentum characteristic of strong radial flow in the pion source. No striking dependence on pion-pair rapidity or beam energy is observed. Static and dynamic properties of the pion source are obtained from simultaneous fits with a blast-wave model to radius parameters and midrapidity transverse momentum spectra. Predictions of hydrodynamic and microscopic models of Pb+Pb collisions are discussed.

Abstract

The NA49 experiment has collected comprehensive data on particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions over the whole SPS beam energies range, the critical energy domain where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase is expected to occur. The latest results from Pb+Pb collisions between 20$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV on baryon stopping and light nuclei production as well as those for strange hyperons are presented. The measured data on $p$, $\bar{p}$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Xi^-$ and $\bar{\Xi}^+$ production were used to evaluate the rapidity distributions of net-baryons at SPS energies and to compare with the results from the AGS and the RHIC for central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions. The dependence of the yield ratios and the inverse slope parameter of the $m_t$ spectra on the collision energy and centrality, and the mass number of the produced nuclei $^3He$, $t$, $d$ and $\bar{d}$ are discussed within coalescence and statistical approaches. Analysis of the total multiplicity exhibits remarkable agreement between the measured yield for $^3He$ and those predicted by the statistical hadronization model. In addition, new results on $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ as well as $\Xi^-$ production in minimum bias Pb+Pb reactions at 40$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV and central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions are presented. Abstract

The latest NA49 results on event-by-event transverse momentum fluctuations are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). Two different methods are applied: evaluating the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and studying two-particle transverse momentum correlations. The obtained results are compared to predictions of the UrQMD model. The results on the energy dependence are compared to the NA49 data on the system size dependence. Abstract

Results of the NA49 collaboration on the production of hadrons with large transverse momentum in Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV beam energy are presented. A range up to p_T = 4 GeV/c is covered. The nuclear modification factor R_CP is extracted for pions, kaons and protons, and the baryon to meson ratios p/pi+, pbar/pi- and Lambda/K^0_s are studied. Abstract

New results on the production of charged pions in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Pions are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system which covers a major fraction of the production phase space. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of nearly 300 bins per charge over intervals from 0 to 2 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from 0 to 0.85 in Feynman x. Abstract

This article is devoted to results on pion-pion -Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Rapidity as well as transverse momentum dependences of the correlation lengths will be shown for collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. Only a weak energy dependence of the radii is observed at SPS energies. The kt-dependence of the correlation lengths as well as the single particle mt-spectra will be compared to model calculations. The rapidity dependence is analysed in a range of 2.5 units of rapidity starting at the center of mass rapidity at each beam energy. Abstract

The elliptic flow of $\Lambda$ hyperons has been measured by the NA49 experiment in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The standard method of correlating particles with an event plane has been used. Measurements of $v_2$ near mid-rapidity are reported as a function of rapidity, centrality and transverse momentum. Elliptic flow of Lambda particles increases both with the impact parameter and with the transverse momentum. It is compared with $v_2$ for pions and protons as well as with models predictions. Abstract

An overview of results from the CERN experiment NA49 is presented with emphasis on most recent measurements. Abstract

Results are presented on Omega production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158 AGeV beam energy. For the first time in heavy ion reactions, rapidity distributions and total yields were measured for the sum Omega- + anti-Omega+ at 40 AGeV and for Omega- and anti-Omega+ separately at 158 AGeV. The yields are strongly underpredicted by the string-hadronic URQMD model but agree better with predictions from hadron gas model.

Abstract

Results are presented on event-by-event electric charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. The observed fluctuations are close to those expected for a gas of pions correlated by global charge conservation only. These fluctuations are considerably larger than those calculated for an ideal gas of deconfined quarks and gluons. The present measurements do not necessarily exclude reduced fluctuations from a quark-gluon plasma because these might be masked by contributions from resonance decays.

Abstract

Emission of pi, K, phi and Lambda was measured in near-central C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p+p, S+S and Pb+Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as onset of the formation of coherent partonic subsystems of increasing size.

Abstract

The hadronic final state of central Pb+Pb collisions at 20, 30, 40, 80, and 158 AGeV has been measured by the CERN NA49 collaboration. The mean transverse mass of pions and kaons at midrapidity stays nearly constant in this energy range, whereas at lower energies, at the AGS, a steep increase with beam energy was measured. Compared to p+p collisions as well as to model calculations, anomalies in the energy dependence of pion and kaon production at lower SPS energies are observed. These findings can be explained, assuming that the energy density reached in central A+A collisions at lower SPS energies is sufficient to transform the hot and dense nuclear matter into a deconfined phase., 6 pages, 8 Figures, proceedings of the ICHEP2004 conference

Abstract

Production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158 A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The Lambda/pi ratio at mid-rapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest AGS and 40 A GeV SPS energies, whereas the Antilambda/pi ratio exhibits a monotonic increase.

Abstract

Preliminary results on pion-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment are presented. Rapidity as well as transverse momentum dependence of the HBT-radii are shown for collisions at 20, 30, 40, 80, and 158 AGeV beam energy. Including results from AGS and RHIC experiments only a weak energy dependence of the radii is observed. Abstract

The most recent data of NA49 on hadron production in nuclear collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. Anomalies in the energy dependence of pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions are observed. They suggest that the onset of deconfinement is located at about 30 AGeV. Large multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations are measured for collisions of intermediate mass systems at 158 AGeV. Abstract

Results of resonance searches in the Xi-pi-, Xi-pi+, bar{; ; ; ; Xi}; ; ; ; +pi-, and bar{; ; ; ; Xi}; ; ; ; +pi+ invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt{; ; ; ; s}; ; ; ; = 17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi-pi- baryon resonance with mass of 1.862± ; ; 0.002 GeV/c2 and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c2. The significance is estimated to be above 4.2. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic Xi^{; ; ; ; --}; ; ; ; _{; ; ; ; ; ; 3/2}; ; ; ; baryon with S = -2, I = 3/2, and a quark content of (dsds\bar{; ; ; ; u}; ; ; ; ). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the \Xi^{; ; ; ; -}; ; ; ; \pi^{; ; ; ; +}; ; ; ; spectrum which is a candidate for the \Xi^{; ; ; ; 0}; ; ; ; _{; ; ; ; 3/2}; ; ; ; member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of (dsus\bar{; ; ; ; d}; ; ; ; ). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass.

Abstract

Results are presented on event-by-event electric charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20, 30, 40, 80 and 158 AGeV. The observed fluctuations are close to those expected for a gas of pions correlated by global charge conservation only. These fluctuations are considerably larger than those calculated for an ideal gas of deconfined quarks and gluons. The present measurements do not necessarily exclude reduced fluctuations from a quark-gluon plasma because these might be masked by contributions from resonance decays.

Abstract

In the vicinity of the QCD phase transition, critical fluctuations have been predicted to lead to non-statistical fluctuations of particle ratios, depending on the nature of the phase transition. Recent results of the NA49 energy scan program show a sharp maximum of the ratio of K+ to Pi+ yields in central Pb+Pb collisions at beam energies of 20-30 AGeV. This observation has been interpreted as an indication of a phase transition at low SPS energies. Abstract

A non-monotonic energy dependence of the $K^{+} / \pi^{+}$ ratio with a sharp maximum close to 30 A$\cdot$GeV is observed in central Pb+Pb collisions. Within a statistical model of the early stage, this is interpreted as a sign of the phase transition to a QGP, which causes a sharp change in the energy dependence of the strangeness to entropy ratio. This observation naturally motivates us to study the production of multistrange hyperons ($\Xi$, $\Omega$) as a function of the beam energy. Furthermore it was suggested that the kinematic freeze-out of $\Omega$ takes place directly at QGP hadronization. If this is indeed the case, the transverse momentum spectra of the $\Omega$ directly reflect the transverse expansion velocity of a hadronizing QGP. In this report we show preliminary NA49 results on $\Omega^{-}$ and $\bar{\Omega}^{+}$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV and compare them to measurements of $\Xi^{-}$ and $\bar{\Xi}^{+}$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 30, 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV., Comment: Presented at 25th International School of Nuclear Physics, Erice, Italy, to be published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics, 3 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Bose-Einstein correlations of charged kaons were measured near mid-rapidity in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A$\cdot$GeV by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Source radii were extracted using the Yano-Koonin-Podgoretsky and Bertsch-Pratt parameterizations. The results are compared to published pion data. The measured $m_\perp$ dependence for kaons and pions is consistent with collective transverse expansion of the source and a freeze-out time of about 9.5 $fm$.

Abstract

Directed and elliptic flow measurements for charged pions and protons are reported as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity, and centrality for 40A and 158A GeV Pb + Pb collisions, as recorded by the NA49 detector. Both the standard method of correlating particles with an event plane and the cumulant method of studying multiparticle correlations are used. In the standard method the directed flow is corrected for conservation of momentum. In the cumulant method elliptic flow is reconstructed from genuine four-, six-, and eight-particle correlations, showing the first unequivocal evidence for collective motion in A + A collisions at SPS energies.

Abstract

Measurements of charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 AGeV are presented. These are compared with data at lower and higher energies as well as with results from p+p interactions. The mean pion multiplicity per wounded nucleon increases approximately linearly with s_NN^1/4 with a change of slope starting in the region 15-40 AGeV. The change from pion suppression with respect to p+p interactions, as observed at low collision energies, to pion enhancement at high energies occurs at about 40 AGeV. A non-monotonic energy dependence of the ratio of K^+ to pi^+ yields is observed, with a maximum close to 40 AGeV and an indication of a nearly constant value at higher energies.The measured dependences may be related to an increase of the entropy production and a decrease of the strangeness to entropy ratio in central Pb+Pb collisions in the low SPS energy range, which is consistent with the hypothesis that a transient state of deconfined matter is created above these energies. Abstract

Recent results of the NA49 experiment are presented. These cover first results on pion and kaon production, HBT, and charge fluctuations from Pb+Pb reactions at 40A GeV and their comparison to 158A GeV beam energy. Furthermore a study on baryon number transfer in p+p, centrality selected p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and new results on the system size dependence of kaon yields, including C+C and Si+Si data, are presented. Additionally, a first result on $\Lambda$ $\Lambda$ correlations is shown.

Abstract

Results of the production of Xi and Xi-bar hyperons in central Pb+Pb interactions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon are presented. This analysis utilises a global reconstruction procedure, which allows a measurement of 4pi integrated yields to be made for the first time. Inverse slope paramters, which are determined from an exponential fit to the transverse mass spectra, are shown. Central rapidity densities are found to be 1.49 +- 0.08 and 0.33 +- 0.04 per event per unit of rapidity for Xi and Xi-bar respectively. Yields integrated to full phase space are 4.12 +- 0.02 and 0.77 +- 0.04 for Xi and Xi-bar. The ratio of Xi-bar/Xi at mid-rapidity is 0.22 +- 0.03.
