1. Neutronics Assessment of the Spatial Distributions of the Nuclear Loads on the DEMO Divertor ITER-like Targets: Comparison between the WCLL and HCPB Blanket

Abstract

The Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) of the divertor target contribute to the fundamental functions of heat removal and particle exhaust during fusion operation, being subjected to a very hostile and complex loading environment characterized by intense particles bombardment, high heat fluxes (HHF), varying stresses loads and a significant neutron irradiation. The development of a well-designed divertor target, which represents a crucial step in the realization of DEMO, needs the assessment of all these loads as accurately as possible, to provide pivotal data and indications for the design and structural performance prediction of the PFCs. In a particular way, this study is fully devoted to the comprehension of the distributions on the divertor target of the main nuclear loads due to neutron irradiation, performed for the first time using an extremely detailed approach. This work has been carried-out considering the latest configuration of the DEMO reactor, including the updated design of the divertor and ITER-Like PFCs geometry, varying the blanket layout (Water Cooled Lithium Lead—WCLL and Helium Cooled Pebble Bed—HCPB), thus evaluating the impact of the different blanket concept on the above-mentioned distributions. Neutronics analyses have been performed with MCNP5 Monte Carlo code and JEFF3.3 nuclear data libraries. 3D DEMO MCNP models have been created, focusing in particular on a thorough representation of the divertor and PFCs, allowing for the assessment of the distributions of the main nuclear loads: radiation damage (dpa/FPY), He-production rate (appm/FPY) and nuclear heating density (W/cm3) and total nuclear power deposition (MW). These results are presented by means of 2D maps and plots for each PFCs sub-component both for WCLL and HCPB blanket case: W-monoblocks, Cu-interlayers\CuCrZr-pipe and PFC-CB (Cassette Body) supports made of Eurofer steel.

2. Engineering of a FGM Interlayer to Reduce the Thermal Stresses Inside the PFCs

Abstract

A substantial contribution of the stresses that arise inside the Plasma-Facing Components (PFCs) when a heat load is applied is caused by the mismatch of the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) between the armor, usually made of tungsten (W), and the heat sink. A potential way to reduce such contribution to the secondary stresses is the use of an interlayer made with a Functionally Graded Material (FGM), to be interposed between the two sub-components. By tailoring the W concentration in the volume of the FGM, one can engineer the CTE in such a way that the thermal stresses are reduced inside the PFC. To minimize and, theoretically, reduce to zero the stresses due to the CTE mismatch, the FGM should ensure kinematic continuity between the armor and the heat sink, in a configuration where they deform into exactly the shape they would assume if they were detached from each other. We will show how this condition occurs when the mean thermal strain of each sub-component is the same. This work provides a methodology to determine the thickness and the spatial concentration function of the FGM able to ensure the necessary kinematic continuity between the two sub-components subjected to a generic temperature field monotonously varying in the thickness, while remaining stress-free itself. A method for the stratification of such ideal FGM is also presented. Additionally, it will be shown that the bending of the PFC, if allowed by the kinematic boundary conditions, does not permit, at least generally, the coupling of the expansion of the armor and of the heat sink. As an example of our methodology, a study case of the thermomechanical design of a steel-based PFC with an engineered W/steel FGM interlayer is presented. In such an exercise, we show that our procedure of engineering a FGM interlayer is able to reduce the linearized secondary stress of more than 24% in the most critical section of the heat sink, satisfying all the design criteria.

Abstract

Alpha channelling is a possible mechanism to transfer the energy of the fusion generated alpha particles directly to the thermal ion population through a wave propagating in the plasma. The interaction of ion Bernstein waves with a population of alpha particles is investigated to determine the conditions that maximize the absorption of the wave by the thermal ions and minimize the absorption by the thermal electrons under reactor relevant conditions. The ray trajectories equations are analytically and numerically solved beyond the mode conversion layer and the optimal conditions for alpha channelling are determined.

Abstract

In preparation for the upcoming deuterium-tritium campaign at the JET tokamak, the ex-vessel fission chamber neutron diagnostics and the neutron activation system will be calibrated in absolute terms at 14 MeV neutron energy, to a required accuracy of less than 10%. Two nominally identical DT neutron generators were chosen as the calibration sources, both of which were fully calibrated and characterized at the UK's National Physical Laboratory. The neutron activation method was adopted as a complementary method for the purpose of determining the absolute value of the neutron yield from the neutron generators and to provide a means of cross check for the active detection methods being employed. The work being presented here shows the derivation of the neutron emission rate from the neutron generators based upon experimental activation foil measurements. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

We investigate for a generic tokamak equilibrium the performance of alpha channelling driven by a mode-converted ion Bernstein wave with the effect of Alfvenic turbulence accounted for through an outward particle flux at the threshold magnetic moment for wave–particle interaction. The formal solution of the associated Fokker–Planck equation is given in the limit of large wave-induced diffusion with absorbing boundary conditions at the outer edge. By choosing a specific ITER-like equilibrium, the power flowing from alpha particles to the wave is explicitly computed and its dependence on the relevant physical parameters is discussed. In particular, alpha channelling is maximized when the outward flux equals the flux of pure wave-induced diffusion, in which case up to ~55% of the total alpha particle energy can be extracted. The spectra of particles hitting the outer edge and crossing are also derived.

Abstract

The experimental method developed at ASDEX Upgrade for the determination of the intrinsic tungsten (W) density profile coupling data from the soft X-ray (SXR) diagnostic and vacuum-ultra-violet (VUV) spectroscopy has been upgraded for application to JET plasmas. The strong poloidal asymmetries in the SXR emission are modeled assuming a ln(ϵ(ρ,R)/ϵ(ρ,R0))=λ(ρ)(R2−R02) distribution, where ρ is the flux coordinate, R is the major radius, and λ is the fit parameter. The W density is calculated from the resulting 2D SXR emissivity maps accounting for contributions from a low-Z impurity (typically beryllium) and main ion with the assumption that their contributions are poloidally symmetric. Comparing the result with the independent W concentration measurement of VUV spectroscopy, a recalibration factor for the SXR emissivity is calculated making the method robust against the decrease in the sensitivity of the SXR diodes which has been observed across multiple campaigns. The final 2D W density map is checked for consistency versus the time-evolution of the W concentration measurement from VUV spectroscopy, toroidal rotation measurements from charge exchange recombination spectroscopy, and tomographic reconstructions of bolometry data. Abstract

Alpha particle channeling, the attempt to extract energy from high-energy fusion alpha particles using a combination of high- and low-frequency waves introduced in the plasma with antennae, is studied using a guiding center code. We examine the effect of the combination of cooling caused by a cyclotron mode, particle diffusion due to Alfven modes introduced for ash removal, the inclusion of microturbulent diffusion, and the slowing down of the alpha particles on electrons. Induced cooling is achieved with a cyclotron resonance, producing additional losses of particles above 3.5 MeV in an amount about equal to the prompt loss. The removal of the low-energy cooled particles by additional modes or by microturbulent diffusion is the hardest challenge for alpha channeling. The cooled alpha particles remain deep in the plasma center, so for this removal, the method used must be capable of providing transport from the plasma center to the edge without also causing losses of high-energy particles.

Abstract

A new Deuterium-Tritium (DT) campaign is planned at JET. An accurate calibration for the 14MeV neutron yield monitors is necessary. In order to perform the calibration a 14MeV Neutron Generator with suitable intensity (∼108n/s) will be used. Due to the intensity change during the Neutron Generator lifetime it would be necessary to monitor continuously the neutron emission intensity during the calibration using a compact detector attached to it. A high quality diamond detector has been chosen as one of the monitors. This detector has been fully characterized at the 14MeV Frascati Neutron Generator facility. The characterization procedure and the resulting 14MeV neutron response of the detector are described in this paper together with the obtained uncertainties.

Abstract

The x-ray transitions in Cu- and Ni-like tungsten ions in the 5.19–5.26 A wavelength range that are relevant ˚ as a high-temperature tokamak diagnostic, in particular for JET in the ITER-like wall configuration, have been studied. Tungsten spectra were measured at the upgraded Shanghai- Electron Beam Ion Trap operated with electron-beam energies from 3.16 to 4.55 keV. High-resolution measurements were performed by means of a flat Si 111 crystal spectrometer equipped by a CCD camera. The experimental wavelengths were determined with an accuracy of 0.3–0.4 mA. The wavelength of the ground-state transition in Cu-like tungsten from the ˚ 3p53d104s4d [(3/2,(1/2,5/2)2]1/2 level was measured. All measured wavelengths were compared with those measured from JET ITER-like wall plasmas and with other experiments and various theoretical predictions including COWAN, RELAC, multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock (MCDF), and FAC calculations. To obtain a higher accuracy from theoretical predictions, the MCDF calculations were extended by taking into account correlation effects (configuration-interaction approach). It was found that such an extension brings the calculations closer to the experimental values in comparison with other calculations. Abstract

Measurements of neutron streaming through penetrations in biological shields are being carried out at JET fusion device by means of thermoluminescence (TL) detectors with the objective to validate the neutronics codes and nuclear data widely applied in ITER nuclear analyses in a real fusion environment. TLDs response due to the neutron component of the radiation field is related to the neutron fluence in a well-defined neutron energy spectrum. Therefore, a TLDs calibration in real fusion radiation fields is necessary to allow neutron fluence from TL measurements at JET to be more precisely calculated. Hence, a MCP-N and MCP-7 TLDs produced at the IFJ PAN in Kraków were calibrated at the ENEA facilities of Frascati and Casaccia laboratories. The obtained results have been analysed and new calibration factors are proposed. The detection system based on TLDs developed and calibrated for JET experiments can then be generally applied not only to fusion neutron fields, but also to ITER to monitor the neutron fluence outside the biological shield. © 2018

Abstract

Fast ions have recently been found to significantly impact and partially suppress plasma turbulence both in experimental and numerical studies in a number of scenarios. Understanding the underlying physics and identifying the range of their beneficial effect is an essential task for future fusion reactors, where highly energetic ions are generated through fusion reactions and external heating schemes. However, in many of the gyrokinetic codes fast ions are, for simplicity, treated as equivalent-Maxwellian-distributed particle species, although it is well known that to rigorously model highly non-thermalised particles, a non-Maxwellian background distribution function is needed. To study the impact of this assumption, the gyrokinetic code GENE has recently been extended to support arbitrary background distribution functions which might be either analytic, e.g. slowing down and bi-Maxwellian, or obtained from numerical fast ion models. A particular JET plasma with strong fast-ion related turbulence suppression is revised with these new code capabilities both with linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations. It appears that the fast ion stabilization tends to be less strong but still substantial with more realistic distributions, and this improves the quantitative power balance agreement with experiments., Submitted to Physics of Plasmas

Abstract

We investigate the simplest model of alpha channelling, in which high-frequency electrostatic wave interacts with fusion alpha particles and the effect of low-frequency waves is modeled by an outward flux of particles at the threshold energy E w for wave-particle interaction. The associated Fokker–Planck equation is then solved analytically in the limit of large wave-induced diffusion with absorbing boundary conditions at the outer edge. The power flowing from alpha particles to the wave is explicitly computed and its dependence on the outward flux at E w and on the spatial extent of the high-frequency wave is determined. The best option for alpha channelling is realized when the outward flux equals the flux of pure wave-induced diffusion, in which case the whole perpendicular energy of alpha particles can be extracted. Abstract

In order to contribute to the understanding of runaway electron generation mechanisms during tokamak disruptions, a test particle tracker is introduced in the JOREK 3D non-linear MHD code, able to compute both full and guiding center relativistic orbits. Tests of the module show good conservation of the invariants of motion and consistency between full orbit and guiding center solutions. A first application is presented where test electron confinement properties are investigated in a massive gas injection-triggered disruption simulation in JET-like geometry. It is found that electron populations initialised before the thermal quench (TQ) are typically not fully deconfined in spite of the global stochasticity of the magnetic field during the TQ. The fraction of ‘survivors’ decreases from a few tens down to a few tenths of percent as the electron energy varies from 1 keV to 10 MeV. The underlying mechanism for electron ‘survival’ is the prompt reformation of closed magnetic surfaces at the plasma core and, to a smaller extent, the subsequent reappearance of a magnetic surface at the edge. It is also found that electrons are less deconfined at 10 MeV than at 1 MeV, which appears consistent with a phase averaging effect due to orbit shifts at high energy.

Abstract

Heavy impurities, such as tungsten (W), can exhibit strongly poloidally asymmetric density profiles in rotating or radio frequency heated plasmas. In the metallic environment of JET, the poloidal asymmetry of tungsten enhances its neoclassical transport up to an order of magnitude, so that neoclassical convection dominates over turbulent transport in the core. Accounting for asymmetries in neoclassical transport is hence necessary in the integrated modeling framework. The neoclassical drift kinetic code, NEO [E. Belli and J. Candy, Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion P50, 095010 (2008)], includes the impact of poloidal asymmetries on W transport. However, the computational cost required to run NEO slows down significantly integrated modeling. A previous analytical formulation to describe heavy impurity neoclassical transport in the presence of poloidal asymmetries in specific collisional regimes [C. Angioni and P. Helander, Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 56, 124001 (2014)] is compared in this work to numerical results from NEO. Within the domain of validity of the formula, the factor for reducing the temperature screening due to poloidal asymmetries had to be empirically adjusted. After adjustment, the modified formula can reproduce NEO results outside of its definition domain, with some limitations: When main ions are in the banana regime, the formula reproduces NEO results whatever the collisionality regime of impurities, provided that the poloidal asymmetry is not too large. However, for very strong poloidal asymmetries, agreement requires impurities in the Pfirsch-Schlüter regime. Within the JETTO integrated transport code, the analytical formula combined with the poloidally symmetric neoclassical code NCLASS [W. A. Houlberg et al., Phys. Plasmas 4, 3230 (1997)] predicts the same tungsten profile as NEO in certain cases, while saving a factor of one thousand in computer time, which can be useful in scoping studies. The parametric dependencies of the temperature screening reduction due to poloidal asymmetries would need to be better characterised for this faster model to be extended to a more general applicability.

Abstract

This paper further analyses the EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations presented by [Chankin et al 2017 Nucl. Mater. Energy 12 273], of L-mode JET plasmas in vertical-vertical (VV) and vertical-horizontal (VH) divertor configurations. As expected, the simulated outer divertor ionisation source peaks near the separatrix in VV and radially further out in VH. We identify the reflections of recycled neutrals from lower divertor tiles as the primary mechanism by which ionisation is concentrated on the outer divertor separatrix in the VV configuration. These lower tile reflection pathways (of neutrals from the outer divertor, and to an even greater extent from the inner divertor) dominate the outer divertor separatrix ionisation. In contrast, the lower-tile-reflection pathways are much weaker in the VH simulation and its outer divertor ionisation is dominated by neutrals which do not reflect from any surfaces. Interestingly, these differences in neutral pathways give rise to strong differences in the heat flux density width λq at the outer divertor entrance: λq = 3.2 mm in VH compared to λq = 11.8 mm in VV. In VH, a narrow channel exists in the near scrape-off-layer (SOL) where the convected heat flux, driven by strong Er × B flow and thermoelectric current, dominates over the conducted heat flux. Abstract

In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of type-I ELM time-series from the JET tokamak, the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment, have been investigated. The dynamic analysis has been focused on the detection of nonlinear structure in D a radiation time series. Firstly, the method of surrogate data has been applied to evaluate the statistical significance of the null hypothesis of static nonlinear distortion of an underlying Gaussian linear process. Several nonlinear statistics have been evaluated, such us the time delayed mutual information, the correlation dimension and the maximal Lyapunov exponent. The obtained results allow us to reject the null hypothesis, giving evidence of underlying nonlinear dynamics. Moreover, no evidence of low-dimensional chaos has been found; indeed, the analysed time series are better characterized by the power law sensitivity to initial conditions which can suggest a motion at the 'edge of chaos', at the border between chaotic and regular non-chaotic dynamics. This uncertainty makes it necessary to further investigate about the nature of the nonlinear dynamics. For this purpose, a second surrogate test to distinguish chaotic orbits from pseudoperiodic orbits has been applied. In this case, we cannot reject the null hypothesis which means that the ELM time series is possibly pseudo-periodic. In order to reproduce pseudo-periodic dynamical properties, a periodic state-of-the-art model, proposed to reproduce the ELM cycle, has been corrupted by a dynamical noise, obtaining time series qualitatively in agreement with experimental time series.

Abstract

ASCOT Fusion Source Integrator AFSI, an efficient tool for calculating fusion reaction rates and characterizing the fusion products, based on arbitrary reactant distributions, has been developed and is reported in this paper. Calculation of reactor-relevant D-D, D-T and D-3He fusion reactions has been implemented based on the Bosch-Hale fusion cross sections. The reactions can be calculated between arbitrary particle populations, including Maxwellian thermal particles and minority energetic particles. Reaction rate profiles, energy spectra and full 4D phase space distributions can be calculated for the non-isotropic reaction products. The code is especially suitable for integrated modelling in self-consistent plasma physics simulations as well as in the Serpent neutronics calculation chain. Validation of the model has been performed for neutron measurements at the JET tokamak and the code has been applied to predictive simulations in ITER.

Abstract

The impact of the change of the mass of hydrogen isotopes on the turbulent particle flux is studied. The trapped electron component of the turbulent particle convection induced by collisionality, which is outward in ion temperature gradient turbulence, increases with decreasing thermal velocity of the isotope. Thereby, the lighter is the isotope, the stronger is the turbulent pinch, and the larger is the predicted density gradient at the null of the particle flux. The passing particle component of the flux increases with decreasing mass of the isotope and can also affect the predicted density gradient. This effect is however subdominant for usual core plasma parameters. The analytical results are confirmed by means of both quasi-linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations, and an estimate of the difference in local density gradient produced by this effect as a function of collisionality has been obtained for typical plasma parameters at mid-radius. Analysis of currently available experimental data from the JET and the ASDEX Upgrade tokamaks does not show any clear and general evidence of inconsistency with this theoretically predicted effect outside the errorbars and also allows the identification of cases providing weak evidence of qualitative consistency.

Abstract

International audience; The paper is dedicated to the characterisation of multi-strap ICRH antenna coupling to plasma. Relevance of traditional concept of coupling resistance to antennas with mutually coupled straps is revised and the importance of antenna port excitation consistency for application of the concept is highlighted. A method of antenna S-matrix measurement in presence of plasma is discussed allowing deeper insight into the problem of antenna-plasma coupling. The method is based entirely on the RF plant hardware and control facilities available at JET and it involves application of variable phasing between the antenna straps during the RF plant operations at >100 kW. Unlike traditional techniques relying on low-power (~10 mW) network analysers, the applied antenna voltage amplitudes are relevant to practical conditions of ICRH operations; crucially, they are high enough to minimise possible effects of antenna loading non-linearity due to the RF sheath effects and other phenomena which could affect low-power measurements. The method has been successfully applied at JET to conventional 4-port ICRH antennas energised at frequencies of 33 MHz, 42 MHz and 51 MHz during L-mode plasma discharges while different gas injection modules (GIMs) were used to maintain comparable plasma densities during the pulses. The S-matrix assessment and its subsequent processing yielding `global' antenna coupling resistances in conditions of equalised port maximum voltages allowed consistent description of antenna coupling to plasma at different strap phasing, operational frequencies and applied GIMs. Comprehensive experimental characterisation of mutually coupled antenna straps in presence of plasma also provided a unique opportunity for in-depth verification of TOPICA computer simulations.

Abstract

We report the first experimental observation of the depolarization of the Thomson scattering (TS) radiation, a relativistic effect expected to occur in very high T e plasmas and never observed so far in a fusion machine. A set of unused optical fibers in the collection optics of the high resolution Thomson scattering system of JET has been used to detect the depolarized TS radiation during a JET campaign with T e 8keV . A linear polarizer with the axis perpendicular to the direction of the incident E -field was placed in front of a fiber optic pair observing a region close to the plasma core, while another fiber pair with no polariser simultaneously observed an adjacent plasma region. The measured intensity ratio was found to be consistent with the theory, taking into account sensitivity coefficients of the two measurement channels determined with post-experiment calibrations and Raman scattering. This depolarization effect is at the basis of polarimetric TS, a different and complementary method for the analysis of TS spectra that can provide significant advantages for T e measurements in very hot plasmas such as in ITER ( T e 40keV ).

Experimental observations in JET tokamak plasmas and gyrokinetic simulations point to an important role, for electron heat transport, of electron-scale instabilities and of their interaction with ion-scale instabilities. Since these effects are maximized for strong electron heating and ion-scale modes close to marginal stability, these findings are of high relevance for ITER plasmas, featuring both conditions. Gyrokinetic and quasi-linear transport models accounting for multi-scale effects are assessed against JET experimental results.

Abstract

Neutron emission spectroscopy is a diagnostic technique that allows for energy measurements of neutrons born in nuclear reactions. The JET tokamak fusion experiment (Culham, UK) has a special role in this respect as advanced spectrometers for 2.5 MeV and 14 MeV neutrons have been developed here for the first time for measurements of the neutron emission spectrum from D and DT plasmas with unprecedented accuracy. Twin liquid scintillating neutron spectrometers were built and calibrated at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) (Braunschweig, Germany) and installed on JET in the recent years with tangential-equatorial (KM12) and vertical-radial (KM13) view lines, with the latter only recently operational. This article reports on the performance of KM12 and on the development of the data analysis methods in order to extract physics information upon D ions kinematics in JET auxiliary-heated D plasmas from 2.5 MeV neutron measurements. The comparison of these results with the correspondents from other JET neutron spectrometers is also presented: their agreement allows for JET unique capability of multi-lines of sight neutron spectroscopy and for benchmarking other 14 MeV neutron spectrometers installed on the same lines of sight in preparation for the DT experimental campaign at JET. © 2018 EURATOM.

Abstract

Compact DT neutron generators based on accelerators are often built on the principle of a mixed beam operation, meaning that deuterium (D) and tritium (T) are both present in the ion beam and in the target. Moreover, the beam consists of a mixture of ions and ionized molecules (D, T ions, and ionized D-D, T-T and D-T molecules) so the relevant source components come from T(d, n), D(t, n), D(d, n) and T(t, 2n) reactions at different ion energies. The method for assessing the relative amplitudes of different source components (DD, DT, TT) is presented. The assessment relies on the measurement of the neutron spectrum of different DT components (T(d, n) and D(t, n) at different energies) using a high resolution neutron spectrometer, e.g. a diamond detector, fusion reaction cross-sections, and simulations of neutron generation in the target. Through this process a complete description of the neutron source properties of the mixed beam neutron generator can be made and a neutron source description card, in a format suitable for Monte Carlo code MCNP, produced.

Abstract

The present paper describes the findings of the calibration of the neutron yield monitors on the Joint European Torus (JET) performed in 2013 using a 252Cf source deployed inside the torus by the remote handling system, with particular regard to the calibration of fission chambers which provide the time resolved neutron yield from JET plasmas. The experimental data obtained in toroidal, radial, and vertical scans are presented. These data are first analysed following an analytical approach adopted in the previous neutron calibrations at JET. In this way, a calibration function for the volumetric plasma source is derived which allows us to understand the importance of the different plasma regions and of different spatial profiles of neutron emissivity on fission chamber response. Neutronics analyses have also been performed to calculate the correction factors needed to derive the plasma calibration factors taking into account the different energy spectrum and angular emission distribution of the calibrating (point) 252Cf source, the discrete positions compared to the plasma volumetric source, and the calibration circumstances. All correction factors are presented and discussed. We discuss also the lessons learnt which are the basis for the on-going 14 MeV neutron calibration at JET and for ITER. © 2017 EURATOM.

Abstract

The ASCOT Fusion Source Integrator (AFSI) has been used to calculate neutron production rates and spectra corresponding to the JET 19-channel neutron camera (KN3) and the time-of-flight spectrometer (TOFOR) as ideal diagnostics, without detector-related effects. AFSI calculates fusion product distributions in 4D, based on Monte Carlo integration from arbitrary reactant distribution functions. The distribution functions were calculated by the ASCOT Monte Carlo particle orbit following code for thermal, NBI and ICRH particle reactions. Fusion cross-sections were defined based on the Bosch-Hale model and both DD and DT reactions have been included. Neutrons generated by AFSI-ASCOT simulations have already been applied as a neutron source of the Serpent neutron transport code in ITER studies. Additionally, AFSI has been selected to be a main tool as the fusion product generator in the complete analysis calculation chain: ASCOT - AFSI - SERPENT (neutron and gamma transport Monte Carlo code) - APROS (system and power plant modelling code), which encompasses the plasma as an energy source, heat deposition in plant structures as well as cooling and balance-of-plant in DEMO applications and other reactor relevant analyses. This conference paper presents the first results and validation of the AFSI DD fusion model for different auxiliary heating scenarios (NBI, ICRH) with very different fast particle distribution functions. Both calculated quantities (production rates and spectra) have been compared with experimental data from KN3 and synthetic spectrometer data from ControlRoom code. No unexplained differences have been observed. In future work, AFSI will be extended for synthetic gamma diagnostics and additionally, AFSI will be used as part of the neutron transport calculation chain to model real diagnostics instead of ideal synthetic diagnostics for quantitative benchmarking.

Abstract

Future devices like JT-60SA, ITER and DEMO require quantitative predictions of pedestal density and temperature levels, as well as inter-ELM and ELM divertor heat fluxes, in order to improve global confinement capabilities while preventing divertor erosion/melting in the planning of future experiments. Such predictions can be obtained from dedicated pedestal models like EPED, and from non-linear MHD codes like JOREK, for which systematic validation against current experiments is necessary. In this paper, we show progress in the quantitative validation of the JOREK code using JET simulations. Results analyse the impact of diamagnetic terms on the dynamics and size of the ELMs, and evidence is provided that the onset of type-I ELMs is not governed by linear MHD stability alone, but that a nonlinear threshold could be responsible for large MHD events at the plasma edge. Abstract

In metallic machines ICRH heating is playing an increasingly important role. One of its most recent applications on the Joint Europena Torus (JET) is sawtooth control by ICRH modulation, for avoiding triggering dangerous neo-classical tearing modes (NTMs) and counteracting impurity accumulation. Some of the main difficulties of these experiments are the assessment of the synchronization efficiency and the understanding of the main physical mechanisms at play. In this paper, three independent classes of statistical indicators are introduced to address these issues: Recurrence Plots, Convergent Cross Mapping and Transfer Entropy. The application to JET experiments with the ILW shows that the proposed indicators agree quite well among themselves and provide sound estimates of the efficiency of the synchronisation scheme investigated. They also support, with a shot to shot basis analysis and an estimate of the uncertainties, the interpretation that the fast ions play a fundamental role in the stabilization of the sawteeth, in both L and H mode. Proposals for experiments to be carried out in the future to consolidate the interpretation of the results are discussed.

Abstract

In this work, an investigation of the neutral gas flow in the JET sub-divertor area is presented, with respect to the interaction between the plasma side and the pumping side. The edge plasma side is simulated with the SOLPS code, while the sub-divertor area is modeled by means of the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, which in the last few years has proved well able to describe rarefied, collisional flows in tokamak sub-divertor structures. Four different plasma scenarios have been selected, and for each of them a user-defined, iterative procedure between SOLPS and DSMC has been established, using the neutral flux as the key communication term between the two codes. The goal is to understand and quantify the mutual influence between the two regions in a self-consistent manner, that is to say, how the particle exhaust pumping system controls the upstream plasma conditions. Parametric studies of the flow conditions in the sub-divertor, including additional flow outlets and variations of the cryopump capture coefficient, have been performed as well, in order to understand their overall impact on the flow field. The DSMC analyses resulted in the calculation of both the macroscopic quantities—i.e. temperature, number density and pressure—and the recirculation fluxes towards the plasma chamber. The consistent values for the recirculation rates were found to be smaller than those according to the initial standard assumption made by SOLPS.

Abstract

In several tokamaks, non-axisymmetric magnetic field studies show that applied magnetic fields with a toroidal harmonic n = 2 can lead to disruptive n = 1 locked modes. In Ohmic plasmas, n = 2 magnetic reconnection thresholds in otherwise stable discharges are readily accessed at edge safety factors q similar to 3, low density, and low rotation. Similar to previous studies with n = 1 fields, the thresholds are correlated with the "overlap" field computed with the IPEC code. The overlap field quantifies the plasma-mediated coupling of the external field to the resonant field. Remarkably, the "critical overlap fields" at which magnetic islands form are similar for applied n = 1 and 2 fields. The critical overlap field increases with plasma density and edge safety factor but is independent of the toroidal field. Poloidal harmonics m> nq dominate the drive for resonant fields while m < nq harmonics have a negligible impact. This contrasts with previous results in H-mode discharges at high plasma pressure in which the toroidal angular momentum is sensitive to low poloidal harmonics. Together, these results highlight unique requirements for n > 1 field control including the need for multiple rows of coils to control selected plasma parameters for specific functions (e.g., rotation control or ELM suppression).

Abstract

The assessment of the Shutdown Dose Rate (SDR) due to neutron activation is a major safety issue for fusion devices and in the last decade several benchmark experiments have been conducted at JET during Deuterium-Deuterium experiments for the validation of the numerical tools used in ITER nuclear analyses. The future Deuterium-Tritium campaign at JET (DTE2) will provide a unique opportunity to validate the codes under ITER-relevant conditions through the comparison between numerical predictions and measured quantities (C/E). For this purpose, a novel SDR experiment, described in the present work, is in preparation in the frame of the WPJET3-NEXP subproject within EUROfusion Consortium. The experimental setup has been accurately designed to reduce measurement uncertainties; spherical air-vented ionization chambers (ICs) will be used for on-line ex-vessel decay gamma dose measurements during JET shutdown following DT operations and activation foils have been selected for measuring the neutron fluence near ICs during operations. Active dosimeters (based on ICs) have been calibrated over a broad energy range (from about 30 keV to 1.3 MeV) with X and gamma reference beam qualities. Neutron irradiation tests confirmed the capability of active dosimeters of performing on-line decay gamma dose rate measurements, to follow gamma dose decay at the end of neutron irradiation as well as insignificant activation of the ICs. Abstract

We focus on JET plasmas in which ELMs are triggered by pellets in the presence of ELMs which occur naturally. We perform direct time domain analysis of signals from fast radial field coils and toroidal full flux azimuthal loops. These toroidally integrating signals provide simultaneous high time resolution measurements of global plasma dynamics and its coupling to the control system. We examine the time dynamics of these signals in plasmas where pellet injection is used to trigger ELMs in the presence of naturally occurring ELMs. Pellets whose size and speed are intended to provide maximum local perturbation for ELM triggering are launched at pre-programmed times, without correlation to the occurrence times of intrinsic ELMs. Pellet rates were sufficiently low to prevent sustained changes of the underlying plasma conditions and natural ELM behaviour. We find a global signature of the build-up to natural ELMs in the temporal analytic phase of both the full flux loops and fast radial field coil signals. Before a natural ELM, the signal phases align to the same value on a ∼2–5ms timescale. This global build up to a natural ELM occurs whilst the amplitude of the full flux loop and fast radial field coil signals are at their background value: it precedes the response seen in these signals to the onset of ELMing. In contrast these signals do not clearly phase align before the ELM for ELMs which are the first to occur following pellet injection. This provides a direct test that can distinguish when an ELM is triggered by a pellet as opposed to occurring naturally. Several experimentally measured quantities are compared with the simulation. These include vertical displacement, halo current, toroidal current asymmetry, and toroidal rotation. The experimental data and the simulations are in reasonable agreement. Also compared was the correlation of the toroidal current asymmetry and the vertical displacement asymmetry. The Noll relation between asymmetric wall force and vertical current moment is verified in the simulations. Also verified is the toroidal flux asymmetry. Although in many ways, JET is a good predictor of ITER disruption behavior, JET and ITER can be in different parameter regimes, and extrapolating from JET data can overestimate the ITER wall force.

Abstract

The Magnet and Power Supplies system in JET includes a ferromagnetic core able to increase the transformer effect by improving the magnetic coupling with the plasma. The iron configuration is based on an inner cylindrical core and eight returning limbs; the ferromagnetic circuit is designed in such a way that the inner column saturates during standard operations [1]. The modelling of the magnetic circuit is a critical issue because of its impact on several applications, including equilibrium and reconstruction analysis required for control applications. The most used model in present applications is based on Equivalent Currents (ECs) placed on the iron boundary together with additional specific constraints, in a 2D axisymmetric frame. The (circular) ECs are chosen, by using the available magnetic measurements, to best represent the magnetic polarization effect [1]. Due to the axisymmetric assumption such approach is not well suited to deal with significant 3D effects, e.g. arising in operations with Error Field Correction Coils (EFCC). In this paper a new methodology is proposed, based on a set of 3D-shaped ECs and able to better model the actual 3D magnetization giving rise to a linear system to be solved. According to a well assessed approach [2], the 3D shape of ECs is represented by a set of elementary sources. The methodology has been successfully validated in a number of JET dry-run experiments where 3D effects are generated by EFCC currents. The new procedure has been designed to be easily coupled with equilibrium or reconstruction codes such as EFIT/V3FIT. The proposed model resulted to be very effective in representing 3D iron magnetization, especially if compared with typical 2D models. Abstract

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. Abstract

The Neutron Camera (NC) is a Joint European Torus (ET) diagnostic, based on a set of 19 collimated lines of sight equipped with plastic (BC418) and liquid (NE213) scintillators, with the main function of measuring the neutron emissivity profile due to 2.5 MeV (DD) and 14 MeV (DT). Due to several limitations of the present data acquisition system and in view of the JET DT campaign, an enhancement project (Neutron Camera Upgrade, NCU) was launched. The main objective was to improve the measurement capability of NC for 14 MeV neutrons, by application of a high throughput FPGA-based digital acquisition system. The present paper describes the hardware architecture and the FPGA processing selected for the NCU project and the first tests carried out at JET. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) have been investigated in JET ohmic discharges using mainly Doppler backscattering. Characteristics and scaling properties of the GAM are studied. Time and spatial resolved measurements of the perpendicular velocity indicate that GAMs are located in a narrow layer at the edge density gradient region with amplitude corresponding to about 50% of the mean local perpendicular velocity. GAMs on JET appear to be regulated by the turbulence drive rather than by their damping rate. It is also shown that the GAM amplitude is ~20% larger in deuterium than in hydrogen plasmas. Abstract

This work presents measurements done at the Peking University Van de Graaff neutron source of the response of single crystal synthetic diamond (SD) detectors to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons of 14-20 MeV. The results show an energy resolution of 1% for incoming 20 MeV neutrons, which, together with 1% detection efficiency, opens up to new prospects for fast ion physics studies in high performance nuclear fusion devices such as SD neutron spectrometry of deuterium-tritium plasmas heated by neutral beam injection.

Abstract

A new resistive bolometer system has been developed for MAST-Upgrade. It will measure radiated power in the new Super-X divertor, with millisecond time resolution, along 16 vertical and 16 horizontal lines of sight. The system uses a Xilinx Zynq-7000 series Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in the D-TACQ ACQ2106 carrier to perform real time data acquisition and signal processing. The FPGA enables AC-synchronous detection using high performance digital filtering to achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio and will be able to output processed data in real time with millisecond latency. The system has been installed on 8 previously unused channels of the JET vertical bolometer system. Initial results suggest good agreement with data from existing vertical channels but with higher bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio. Abstract

Nonlinear gyrokinetic codes allow for detailed understanding of tokamak core turbulent transport. However, their computational demand precludes their use for predictive profile modeling. An alternative approach is required to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and prediction of experiments. A quasilinear gyrokinetic model, QuaLiKiz (Bourdelle et al 2007 Phys. Plasmas 14 112501), is demonstrated to be rapid enough to ease systematic interface with experiments. The derivation and approximation of this approach are reviewed. The quasilinear approximation is proven valid over a wide range of core plasma parameters. Examples of profile prediction using QuaLiKiz coupled to the CRONOS integrated modeling code (Artaud et al 2010 Nucl. Fusion 50 043001) are presented. QuaLiKiz is being coupled to other integrated modeling platforms such as ETS and JETTO. QuaLiKiz quasilinear gyrokinetic turbulent heat, particle and angular momentum fluxes are available to all users. It allows for extensive stand-alone interpretative analysis and for first principle based integrated predictive modeling.

DIII-D plasmas at very low density exhibit the onset of n = 1 error field (EF) penetration (the ‘low-density locked mode’) not at a critical density or EF, but instead at a critical level of runaway electron (RE) intensity. Raising the density during a discharge does not avoid EF penetration, so long as RE growth proceeds to the critical level. Penetration is preceded by non-thermalization of the electron cyclotron emission, anisotropization of the total pressure, synchrotron emission shape changes, as well as decreases in the loop voltage and bulk thermal electron temperature. The same phenomena occur despite various types of optimal EF correction, and in some cases modes are born rotating. Similar phenomena are also found at the low-density limit in JET. These results stand in contrast to the conventional interpretation of the low-density stability limit as being due to residual EFs and demonstrate a new pathway to EF penetration instability due to REs. Existing scaling laws for penetration project to increasing EF sensitivity as bulk temperatures decrease, though other possible mechanisms include classical tearing instability, thermo-resistive instability, and pressure-anisotropy driven instability. Regardless of the first-principles mechanism, known scaling laws for Ohmic energy confinement combined with theoretical RE production rates allow rough extrapolation of the RE criticality condition, and thus the low-density limit, to other tokamaks. The extrapolated low-density limit by this pathway decreases with increasing machine size and is considerably below expected operating conditions for ITER. While likely unimportant for ITER, this effect can explain the low-density limit of existing tokamaks operating with small residual EFs.

Abstract

A prototype of a fully digital data acquisition system upgrade for the TOFOR time-of-flight fusion neutron spectrometer at JET has been implemented and evaluated. The core of the system is composed of five fast PXIe waveform digitisers (1 GSPS, 12 bits) with large internal fast memory (1 GB). Due to the complexity and high requirements on timing precision of the spectrometer, the design and implementation of such a system poses numerous technical challenges, in particular regarding time alignment and synchronisation of signal paths and digitiser modules. These issues and their solutions, as pertaining to the TOFOR spectrometer, are presented in detail in the present paper. As a final assessment of the ability of the new data acquisition system to reproduce the capabilities of the original TOFOR system, a thorough comparison of results produced using both systems is presented. The comparison with TOFOR has been performed with satisfying results. Two immediate advantages of the new data acquisition system are significantly improved triggering dead time (from about 70 ns to 10 ns) and the ability to adjust the triggering thresholds as needed during the analysis step. The enhanced spectroscopic capabilities of the new data acquisition system will be reported on in future publications.

Abstract

In order to complete the exploitation of the JET ITER-like Wall and to take full benefit from deuterium-Tritium experiments on JET, a set of diagnostic system refurbishments or upgrades is in progress. These diagnostic enhancements focus mainly on neutron, gamma, fast ions, instabilities and operations support. This effort intends to provide better spatial, temporal and energy resolution while increasing measurement coverage. But also previously non existing capabilities, such as Doppler Reflectometry, will now be made available for scientific exploitation. Guaranteeing diagnostic reliability and consistency during the expected DT conditions is also a critical condition for the work and systems being implemented. Abstract

The Joint European Torus (JET) high resolution Thomson scattering (HRTS) system measures radial electron temperature and density profiles. One of the key capabilities of this diagnostic is measuring the steep pressure gradient, termed the pedestal, at the edge of JET plasmas. The pedestal is susceptible to limiting instabilities, such as Edge Localised Modes (ELMs), characterised by a periodic collapse of the steep gradient region. A common method to extract the pedestal width, gradient, and height, used on numerous machines, is by performing a modified hyperbolic tangent (mtanh) fit to overlaid profiles selected from the same region of the ELM cycle. This process of overlaying profiles, termed ELM synchronisation, maximises the number of data points defining the pedestal region for a given phase of the ELM cycle. When fitting to HRTS profiles, it is necessary to incorporate the diagnostic radial instrument function, particularly important when considering the pedestal width. A deconvolved fit is determined by a forward convolution method requiring knowledge of only the instrument function and profiles. The systematic error due to the deconvolution technique incorporated into the JET pedestal fitting tool has been documented by Frassinetti et al. [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 83, 013506 (2012)]. This paper seeks to understand and quantify the systematic error introduced to the pedestal width due to ELM synchronisation. Synthetic profiles, generated with error bars and point-to-point variation characteristic of real HRTS profiles, are used to evaluate the deviation from the underlying pedestal width. We find on JET that the ELM synchronisation systematic error is negligible in comparison to the statistical error when assuming ten overlaid profiles (typical for a pre-ELM fit to HRTS profiles). This confirms that fitting a mtanh to ELM synchronised profiles is a robust and practical technique for extracting the pedestal structure.
