Abstract

In this homage to Einstein's 144th birthday we propose a novel quantization prescription, where the paths of a path-integral are not random, but rather solutions of a geodesic equation in a random background. We show that this change of perspective can be made mathematically equivalent to the usual formulations of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. To conclude, we comment on conceptual issues, such as quantum gravity coupled to matter and the quantum equivalence principle.

2. Constraints to Dark Matter from Inert Higgs Doublet Model

Abstract

We study the Inert Higgs Doublet Model and its inert scalar Higgs H as the only source for dark matter. It is found that three mass regions of the inert scalar Higgs can give the correct dark matter relic density. The low mass region (between 3 and 50 GeV) is ruled out. New direct dark matter detection experiments will probe the intermediate (between 60 and 100 GeV) and high (heavier than 550 GeV) mass regions. Collider experiments are advised to search for D±→HW± decay in the two jets plus missing energy channel.

3. Closing a Window for Massive Photons

Abstract

Working with the assumption of nonzero photon mass and a trajectory that is described by the nongeodesic world line of a spinning top we find, by deriving new astrophysical bounds, that this assumption is in contradiction with current experimental results. This yields the conclusion that such photons have to be exactly massless.

Abstract

In this work, a novel mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking is presented. This mechanism incorporates gravity in the generation of masses for gauge fields, showing that the Higgs mechanism can take place even without a quartic self-interaction at the fundamental level. Using the scale-dependent effective action Γk minimally coupled to a gravitational sector, a variational parameter setting is applied. This provides a mass and vacuum expectation value as a function of the constants arising in the low-scale expansion of Newton and cosmological couplings. A comparison with experimental data, such as the Higgs mass, allows putting restrictions on these constants. This generic approach can be compared with explicit candidates for an effective field theory of gravity. As an example, we use the asymptotic safety scenario, where we find restrictions on the matter content of the theory.

Abstract

Gauge theories with general covariance are particularly reluctant to quantization. We discuss the example of the Hamiltonian formulation of the relativistic point particle that, despite its apparent simplicity, is of crucial importance since a number of point particle systems can be cast into this form on a higher dimensional Rindler background, as recently pointed out by Hojman. It is shown that this system can be equipped with a hidden local, symmetry generating, constraint which on the one hand does not bother the classical evolution and on the other hand simplifies the realization of the path integral quantization. Even though the positive impact of the hidden symmetry is more evident in the Lagrangian version of the theory, it is still present through the suggested Hamiltonian constraint.

Abstract

This work presents a generalization of the rotating black hole in two plus one dimensions, in the light of scale--dependent gravitational couplings. In particular, the gravitational coupling $\kappa_0$ and the cosmological term $\Lambda_0$ are not forced to be constants anymore. Instead, $\kappa$ and $\Lambda$ are allowed to change along the radial scale $r$. The effective Einstein field equations of this problem are solved by assuming static rotational symmetry and by maintaining the usual structure of the line element. 7. Path integral of the relativistic point particle in Minkowski space

Abstract

In this article, we analyze the fundamental global and local symmetries involved in the action for the free relativistic point particle. Moreover, we identify a hidden local symmetry, whose explicit consideration and factorization utilizing of a Fujikawa prescription, leads to the construction of relativistic propagators that satisfy the Chapman-Kolmogorov identity. By means of a detailed topological analysis, we find three different relativistic propagators (orthochronous, space-like, and Feynman) which are obtained from the exclusive integration of paths within different sectors in Minkowski space. Abstract

In the present work, we extend and generalize our previous work regarding the scale dependence applied to black holes in the presence of non-linear electrodynamics [1]. The starting point for this study is the Einstein-power-Maxwell theory with a vanishing cosmological constant in (3+1) dimensions, assuming a scale dependence of both the gravitational and the electromagnetic coupling. We further examine the corresponding thermodynamic properties and how these quantities experience deviations from their classical counterparts. We solve the effective Einstein's field equations using the "null energy condition" to obtain analytical solutions. The implications of quantum corrections are also briefly discussed. Abstract

The existence of spacetime singularities is one of the biggest problems of nowadays physics. According to Penrose, each physical singularity should be covered by a "cosmic censor" which prevents any external observer from perceiving their existence. However, classical models describing the gravitational collapse usually results in strong curvature singularities, which can also remain "naked" for a finite amount of advanced time. This proceedings studies the modifications induced by Asymptotically Safe Gravity on the gravitational collapse of generic Vaidya spacetimes. It will be shown that, for any possible choice of the mass function, Quantum Gravity makes the internal singularity gravitationally weak, thus allowing a continuous extension of the spacetime beyond the singularity., 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Scale-dependence is a common feature to all effective models of quantum gravity. In this paper, a cosmological model based on the scale-dependent scenario of gravity is presented. It is argued that such models, where the scale-dependence appears as a correction to the classical $\Lambda$CDM evolution, have the potential of addressing the tensions between early and late time measurements of $H_0$. After defining criteria to parametrize this tension, we perform a numerical scan over the parameter space of the scale-dependent model, subject to these criteria. Abstract

The Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) is able to explain the current data from neutrino physics. Unfortunately Split Supersymmetry as low energy approximation of this theory fails to generate a solar square mass difference, including after the addition of bilinear R-Parity Violation. In this work, it is shown how one can derive an effective low energy theory from the MSSM in the spirit of Split Supersymmetry, which has the potential of explaining the neutrino phenomenology. This is achieved by going beyond leading order in the process of integrating out heavy scalars from the original theory, which results in non-renormalizable operators in the effective low energy theory. It is found that in particular a d = 8 operator is crucial for the generation of the neutrino mass differences.

Abstract

In this work, we investigate four-dimensional planar black-hole solutions in anti-de Sitter spacetimes in light of the so-called scale-dependent scenario. To obtain this new family of solutions, the classical couplings of the theory, i.e., the gravitational coupling G0 and the cosmological constant $ \Lambda_{0}$, are not taken to be fixed values anymore. Thus, those classical parameters evolve to functions which change along the “height” coordinate, z . The effective Einstein field equations are solved, and the results are analyzed and compared with the classical counterpart. Finally, some thermodynamic properties of the presented scale-dependent black hole are investigated.

Abstract

External electromagnetic fields can provoke stress, and thus modifications of the internal structure of nucleons. Working with this hypothesis, one can derive a simple description of the charge dependence of the EMC effect. This first result is confirmed by two explicit models of the structure functions of deformed nucleons in the atomic nucleus. For large nuclei a continuous model is used. Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). 15. X17: A new force, or evidence for a hard γ + γ process?

Abstract

It is investigated whether the “X17 puzzle” might be explained by a nuclear decay chain and a conversion of the two resulting highly energetic γs into an electron-positron pair. It is found that the corresponding kinematics fits perfectly to the experimental result. Also the conversion rates of this process are reasonable. However, the assumed nuclear chain reaction is not favored in the established nuclear models and no explanation for the isospin structure of the signal can be given. Thus, it has to be concluded that the process studied in this paper does not give a completely satisfying explanation of the “X17 puzzle”.

Abstract

In this work we extend and generalize our previous work on the scale dependence at the level of the effective action of black holes in the presence of non-linear electrodynamics. In particular, we consider the Einstein-power-Maxwell theory without a cosmological constant in ( $$2+1$$ ) dimensions, assuming a scale dependence of both the gravitational and the electromagnetic coupling and we investigate in detail how the scale-dependent scenario affects the horizon and thermodynamic properties of the classical black holes for any value of the power parameter. In addition, we solve the corresponding effective field equations imposing the “null energy condition” in order to obtain analytical solutions. The implications of quantum corrections are also briefly discussed.

In this paper we present a stepwise construction of the path integral over relativistic orbits in Euclidean spacetime. It is shown that the apparent problems of this path integral, like the breakdown of the naive Chapman-Kolmogorov relation, can be solved by a careful analysis of the overcounting associated with local and global symmetries. We argue that the discrepancy between the Planck mass scale and the observed value of the cosmological constant can be largely attenuated if those quantities are understood as a result of effective, and thus scale-dependent, couplings. We exemplify this mechanism for the early inflationary epoch of the universe by solving the corresponding effective gap equations, subject to an energy condition. According to Wheeler, the gravitational collapse is the ''greatest crisis in Physics of all time''. In this work the structure of the singularity produced by a collapse of a null-fluid will be discussed in the framework of Asymptotically Safe (AS) Gravity. Under the assumption of spherical symmetry, it will be shown that the generic singularity arising in the collapse of a null-dust is spacelike and ''whimper'', following the Tipler classification, allowing in principle an extension of the spacetime across the singularity.

Abstract

In this work, we investigate the prospects of future ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ colliders in testing a Higgs triplet model with a scalar triplet and a scalar singlet under $SU(2)$. The parameters of the model are fixed so that the lightest $CP$-even state corresponds to the Higgs particle observed at the LHC at around 125 GeV. This study investigates if the second heaviest $CP$-even, the heaviest $CP$-odd and the singly charged states can be observed at existing and future colliders by computing their accessible production and decay channels. In general, the LHC is not well equipped to produce a Higgs boson which is not mainly doubletlike, so we turn our focus to lepton colliders. We find distinctive features of this model in cases where the second heaviest $CP$-even Higgs is tripletlike, singletlike or a mixture. These features could distinguish the model from other scenarios at future ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ colliders.

Abstract

Symmetries are essential for a consistent formulation of many quantum systems. In this paper we discuss a previously unnoticed symmetry, which is present for any Lagrangian term that involves $\dot{x}^2$. As a basic model that incorporates the fundamental symmetries of quantum gravity and string theory, we consider the Lagrangian action of the relativistic point particle. A path integral quantization for this seemingly simple system has for long presented notorious problems. Abstract

Scale dependence at the level of the effective action is a generic result of quantum field theory. Allowing for scale dependence of the gravitational couplings leads to a generalization of the corresponding field equations. In this work, those equations are solved by imposing the "null energy condition" in three-dimensional space time with stationary spherical symmetry. The constants of integration are given in terms of the classical BTZ parameters plus one additional constant, that parametrizes the strength of the scale dependence. The properties such as asymptotics, horizon structure, and thermodynamics are discussed. Abstract

We measure Mueller matrices of optical devices with a 6-ns temporal resolution. Achieved accuracy is indicated by the newly defined mean depolarization. It is greatly improved by setting the degree-of-polarization to 1. We characterize a differential phase modulator and a rotating halfwave plate. The latter is part of a polarization scrambler. Rayleigh-like and peaked polarization speed distributions are investigated theoretically and experimentally. With the peaked ones we demonstrate the 100-times accelerated testing of a polarization-tracking receiver.

The motion of spinning massless particles in gravitationally curved backgrounds is revisited by considering new types of constraints. Those constraints guarantee zero mass ($P_\mu P^\mu=0$) and they allow for the possibility of trajectories which are not simply null geodesics. Abstract

It is known that the center-of-mass energy of the collision of two massive particles following geodesics around a black hole presents a maximum. The maximum energy increases when the black hole is endowed with spin, and for a maximally rotating hole this energy blows up, offering, in principle, a unique probe of fundamental physics. This work extends the latter studies by considering that the colliding particles possess intrinsic angular momentum (spin), described by the Hanson–Regge–Hojman theory of spinning particles. By analyzing planar trajectories of spinning particles around non-rotating black holes, a significant increase of the invariant collision energy is found. Radial turning points, causality constraints, and limitations of the theory are discussed.

Abstract

We discuss the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the presence of hidden photons kinetically mixed with the ordinary electromagnetic photons. The hidden photon field causes a slight phase shift in the observable interference pattern. It is then shown how the limited sensitivity of this experiment can be largely improved. The key observation is that the hidden photon field causes a leakage of the ordinary magnetic field into the supposedly field-free region. The direct measurement of this magnetic field can provide a sensitive experiment with a good discovery potential, particularly below the $\sim$ meV mass range for hidden photons., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

In this paper, we present an field-programmable gate array-based automatic endless optical polarization control system, which drives a commercial LiNbO3 polarization transformer. It is capable of tracking endless polarization changes of up to 56 krad/s with mean and maximum polarization errors of 0.077 and 0.197 rad, respectively. While tracking up to 50 krad/s, the system was likewise tested over >2 weeks with maximum polarization error of 0.195 rad during which time it tracked polarization changes of 50 Gigaradian. 112-Gb/s polarization-division multiplexed return to zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying transmission with direct detection and polarization scrambling up to 3.5 krad/s is also demonstrated.

An equation for the emission of classical gravitational waves due to quasi-elastic N → N particle scattering is derived in a model with compactified extra dimensions. In addition to previous classical studies, additional terms that are suppressed by factors of one over the frequency time compactification radius are also calculated. From this, a single formula is given which predicts the energy loss into the gravitational radiation from elastic collisions as well in the low-and high-energy limit.

Abstract

This article reports on a student summer project performed in 2006 at the University of Frankfurt. It is addressed to undergraduate students familiar with the basic principles of relativistic quantum mechanics and general relativity. The aim of the project was to study the Dirac equation in curved space time. To obtain the general relativistic Dirac equation we use the formulation of gravity as a gauge theory in the first part. After these general considerations we restrict the further discussion to the special case of the Schwarzschild metric. This setting corresponds to the hydrogen atom, with the electromagnetic field replaced by gravity. Although there is a singularity at the event horizon it turns out that a regular solution of the time independent Dirac equation exists. Finally the Dirac equation is solved numerically using suitable boundary conditions.

Abstract

Black holes appear as vacuum solutions of classical general relativity which depend on Newton’s constant and possibly the cosmological constant. At the level of a quantum field theory, these coupling constants typically acquire a scale-dependence. A quantum treatment of a black hole should thus take this effect into account. In these proceedings we briefly summarize two complementary approaches to this problem: the renormalization group improvement of the classical solution based on the scale-dependent gravitational couplings obtained within the gravitational Asymptotic Safety program and the exact solution of the improved equations of motion including an arbitrary scale dependence of the gravitational couplings. Abstract

The quest for finding self-consistent background solutions in quantum field theory is closely related to the way one decides to set the renormalization scale $k$. This freedom in the choice of the scale setting can lead to ambiguities and conceptual inconsistencies such as the non-conservation of the stress-energy tensor. In this paper a setting for the "scale-field" is proposed at the level of effective action, which avoids such inconsistencies by construction. Abstract

We study the Inert Higgs Doublet Model and its inert scalar HiggsHas the only source for dark matter. It is found that three mass regions of the inert scalar Higgs can give the correct dark matter relic density. The low mass region (between 3 and 50 GeV) is ruled out. New direct dark matter detection experiments will probe the intermediate (between 60 and 100 GeV) and high (heavier than 550 GeV) mass regions. Collider experiments are advised to search forD±→HW±decay in the two jets plus missing energy channel.

Abstract

In the present work a generalization of the BTZ black hole is studied, for the case of scale dependent couplings. One starts by using the effective action for scale dependence couplings to get a generalization of the Einstein field equations. Self consistent solutions for lapse function, cosmological coupling and Newtons coupling are found. The effect of scale dependent couplings with respect to the classical solution is shown. Moreover, asymptotic behavior as well as thermodynamic properties were investigated. Abstract

Following an initial discussion of control error signal generation, we present new developments and applications of automatic endless optical polarization control based on a commercial electrooptic LiNbO3 polarization transformer: (i) Fast tracking and subsequent demultiplexing of DPSK/DQPSK/QAM polarization channels was hitherto limited to a fairly fixed optical input power. With APD photoreceivers used for residual interference detection, we demonstrate here an optical level tolerance of at least 7 dB, compared to only 3 dB for PIN photoreceivers. DPSK channel polarizations are tracked at up to 40 krad/s and higher speed on the Poincare sphere. (ii) High-order optical modulation schemes require increased accuracy of the polarization controller in the demultiplexer. This is possible at the expense of a reduced tracking speed. We achieve a mean polarization extinction ratio of >40 dB or

Abstract

Black holes are probably among the most fascinating objects populating our universe. Their characteristic features found within general relativity, encompassing spacetime singularities, event horizons, and black hole thermodynamics, provide a rich testing ground for quantum gravity ideas. We review the status of black holes within a particular proposal for quantum gravity, Weinberg's asymptotic safety program. Starting from a brief survey of the effective average action and scale setting procedures, an improved quantum picture of the black hole is developed. The Schwarzschild black hole and its generalizations including angular momenta, higher-derivative corrections and the implications of extra dimensions are discussed in detail. Abstract

We study the quantum modifications of classical, spherically symmetric Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter black holes within Quantum Einstein Gravity. The quantum effects are incorporated through the running coupling constants $G_k$ and $\Lambda_k$, computed within the exact renormalization group approach, and a common scale-setting procedure. We find that, in contrast to common intuition, it is actually the cosmological constant that determines the short-distance structure of the RG-improved black hole: in the asymptotic UV the structure of the quantum solutions is universal and given by the classical Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution, entailing a self-similarity between the classical and quantum regime. As a consequence asymptotically safe black holes evaporate completely and no Planck-size remnants are formed. Moreover, the thermodynamic entropy of the critical Nariai-black hole is shown to agree with the microstate count based on the effective average action, suggesting that the entropy originates from quantum fluctuations around the mean-field geometry., Comment: 28 pages 13 figures
