1. Sources and processes of water-soluble and water-insoluble organic aerosol in cold season in Beijing, China

Abstract

Water-soluble and water-insoluble organic aerosol (WSOA and WIOA) constitute a large fraction of fine particles in winter in northern China, yet our understanding of their sources and processes are still limited. Here we have a comprehensive characterization of WSOA in cold season in Beijing. Particularly, we present the first mass spectral characterization of WIOA by integrating online and offline organic aerosol measurements from high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer. Our results showed that WSOA on average accounted for 59 % of the total OA and comprised dominantly secondary OA (SOA, 69 %). The WSOA composition showed significant changes during the transition season from autumn to winter. While the photochemical-related SOA dominated WSOA (51 %) in early November, the oxidized SOA from biomass burning increased substantially from 8 % to 29 % during the heating season. Comparatively, local primary OA dominantly from cooking aerosol contributed the major fraction of WSOA during clean periods. WIOA showed largely different spectral patterns from WSOA which were characterized by prominent hydrocarbon ions series and low oxygen-to-carbon (O/C = 0.19) and organic mass-to-organic carbon (OM/OC = 1.39) ratios. The nighttime WIOA showed less oxidized properties (O/C = 0.16 vs. 0.24) with more pronounced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) signals than daytime, indicating the impacts of enhanced coal combustion emissions on WIOA. The evolution process of WSOA and WIOA was further demonstrated by the triangle plot of f44 (fraction of m/z 44 in OA) vs. f43, f44 vs. f60, and the Van Krevelen diagram (H/C vs. O/C). We also found more oxidized WSOA and an increased contribution of SOA in WSOA compared with previous winter studies in Beijing, indicating that the changes in OA composition due to clean air act have affected the sources and properties of WSOA.

2. Magnetoresistance effect in permalloy nanowires with various types of notches

Abstract

Suppressing the stochastic domain wall (DW) motion in magnetic nanowires is of great importance for designing DW-related spintronic devices. In this work, we have investigated the pinning/depinning processes of DWs in permalloy nanowires with three different types of notches by using longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR) measurement. The averaged MR curves demonstrate that the stochastic DW depinning is suppressed partly or even completely by a transversely asymmetric notch. The single-shot MR curves show that how the resistance changes with the applied field also depends strongly on the notch type while the DW is pinned around the notch. In the case of two depinning fields, larger (smaller) change of resistance always corresponds to larger (smaller) depinning field, regardless of the notch type. These phenomena can be understood by that the spin structure around the notch changes differently with the notch type when the DW is traveling through the notch.

Abstract

Stochastic phenomena in magnetic nanowires based on domain wall (DW) motion is scientifically important thus to understand and control such behaviors are very meaningful. Here we report on the investigation of pinning and depinning of DWs in permalloy nanowires with six types of longitudinally asymmetric notches using focused magneto-optic Kerr effect (FMOKE) magnetometer and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The hysteresis loops obtained by FMOKE indicate the generation of one or two distinct depinning fields by creating one notch close to the edge of the nanowires, in comparison multiple depinning processes occur in the nanowires with two identical notches symmetrically placed along the transverse direction, indicating more remarkable stochastic DW depinning phenomena. The MFM images verify the existence of DW in each type of nanowires and the DW sizes in the latter kind of nanowires are generally larger than those in the former ones. These observations can be explained by considering the thermal perturbation and edge or surface roughness effects in nanowires.

Abstract

The annealing effects on magentoresistance (MR) values for the top and bottom spin valves are examined. The MR value of bottom spin valves declines with the increase in annealing temperature and disappears at the blocking temperature of 200 degrees C whereas the MR value of the top valves rises to the maximum at the annealing temperature of 100 degrees C and then decline with the further increase in the annealing temperature to about 250 degrees C.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the physics of the accretion and jet in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1). Specifically, we compile a sample composed of 16 nearby NLS1 with $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 0.1$. We investigate the mutual correlation between their radio luminosity $L_{\rm R}$, X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X}$, optical luminosity $L_{\rm 5100}$ and black hole mass $M_{\rm BH}$. By adopting partial correlation analysis: (1) we find a positive correlation between $L_{\rm X}$ and $M_{\rm BH}$, and (2) we find a weak positive correlation between $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{5100}$. However, we don't find significant correlations between $L_{\rm R}$ and $L_{\rm X}$ or between $L_{\rm X}$ and $L_{5100}$ after considering the effect of the black hole mass, which leads to a finding of the independence of $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd}$ on $L_{5100}/L_{\rm Edd}$. Interestingly, the findings that $L_{\rm X}$ is correlated with $M_{\rm BH}$ and $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm Edd}$ is not correlated with $L_{5100}/L_{\rm Edd}$ support that the X-ray emission is saturated with increasing $\dot{M}$ for $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 0.1$ in NLS1s, which may be understood in the framework of slim disc scenario. Finally, we suggest that a larger NLS1 sample with high quality radio and X-ray data is needed to further confirm this result in the future., 9 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio, resistance, barrier height, barrier thickness and bias dependence along the wedge are examined. The bias dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is found to be symmetric in underoxidized regions and asymmetric in overoxidized regions.

Abstract

We report for the first time the discrimination of the core fragment knockout and valence nucleon knockout reaction mechanisms at medium energy range, by the use of the recoil proton tagging technique. Intense 8He beams at 82.3 MeV/u were supplied by the RIPS beam line at RIKEN, and impinged on both hydrogen and carbon targets. Recoil protons were detected in coincidence with the forward moving core fragments and neutrons. The core fragment knockout mechanism is identified through the polar angle correlation and checked by various kinematics relations. This mechanism may be used to extract the cluster structure information of unstable nuclei. On the other hand, with the selection of the tagged valence nucleon knockout mechanism, a narrower peak of 7He ground state is obtained. The extracted neutron spectroscopic factor S n = 0.512 ( 18 ) is relatively smaller than the no-tagged one, and is in good agreement with the prediction of ab initio Greenʼs function Monte Carlo calculations.

Abstract

We fabricate Fe/Fe oxide granular film by DC sputtering and study the magnetic and transport properties in the insulator region. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirm the coexistence of iron and Fe2O3. Accompanied with the nonlinear I–V curve and magnetic measurement, we investigate mechanism of sizable magnetoresistance in detail and found the spin in the interface has crucial contribution to the spin tunneling process.

Abstract

Transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, and electron holography are used to study the microstructure of CoFe/AlO(sub x)/Co magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) isochronally annealed up to 400 degree centigrade. It was found that at 400 degree centigrade more Co and Fe atoms diffused into the oxide barrier layer caused the sip-flip scattering of the spin polarized electrons at the barrier layer, leading to the decrease of the TMR value.

Abstract

The graphs of mode distribution of the arbitrarily trapezoidal-groove guide like map are firstly designed. Its dominant mode is discussed, and the transmission properties such as the dispersion, cut-off and attenuation characteristics for the dominant mode of the arbitrarily trapezoidal-groove guide are analyzed by using the mode-matching method in this paper. Some calculated results are in very good agreement with the data in the published reference. The obtained conclusions are of important significance in theoretical studies and actual applications of the trapezoidal-groove guides for millimeter waves.

Knockout reaction experiment for 8He at 82.3 MeV/u on Hydrogen target was carried out at the RIPS beam line in RIKEN. Recoil protons were detected in coincidence with the forward moving core fragments and neutrons. The quasi-free knockout mechanism is identified through the polar angle correlation and checked by various kinematics conditions. The absolute differential cross sections for 6He core cluster are obtained and compared with the simple Glauber model calculations. The extracted spectroscopic factor is close to unity and a shrinking of the cluster size is evidenced.

Abstract

Superconducting quantum interference device dc magnetic susceptibility, ac magnetic susceptibility, ac electrical resistivity, and specific-heat measurements on bulk and powder samples of ThPt{sub 2}B{sub 2}C shows a bulk superconducting transition {ital T}{sub {ital c}} of 7 K with a transition width of 6.6{endash}7.4 K. The low-temperature normal-state specific-heat data yield an electronic-term coefficient {gamma} of 8.5 mJ/molK{sup 2}, a Debye temperature {theta}{sub {ital D}} of 330 K, and a bulk superconducting specific-heat jump {Delta}{ital C} at a {ital T}{sub {ital c}} of 1.53 {gamma}{ital T}{sub {ital c}}. Contrary to the smooth variation of {ital T}{sub {ital c}} with the {ital T}-{ital T} in-plane distance for the nonmagnetic {ital RT}{sub 2}B{sub 2}C systems ({ital R}=Y, Th, La; {ital T}=Ni,Pd), an anomalous {ital T}{sub {ital c}} variation with the Pt-Pt in-plane distance {ital d}(Pt-Pt) was observed for the nonmagnetic {ital R}Pt{sub 2}B{sub 2}C system ({ital R}=Y, Th, La). This anomalous {ital T}{sub {ital c}}-{ital d}(Pt-Pt) relationship, along with the specific-heat {gamma} value and normal-state Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility of lower-{ital T}{sub {ital c}} ThPt{sub 2}B{sub 2}C, suggests the importance of the Pt(5{ital d})-dominated conduction band. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

15. Magnetic transitions and nearly reentrant superconducting properties ofHoNi2B2C

Abstract

A low-temperature phase diagram H(T) of the 7.8-K superconductor ${\mathrm{HoNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C (with an onset of 8.3 K) is generated through characterization of well-prepared samples by various experimental techniques including ac magnetic susceptibility, superconducting quantum interference device dc magnetic susceptibility, magnetic hysteresis, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements. The results yield a superconducting upper critical field ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}2}$(0) of 3.5 kG, a lower critical field ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}1}$(0) of 250 G, and a Ginzburg-Landau parameter \ensuremath{\kappa} of 3.5. A nearly reentrant deep minimum at 5.2 K with very small ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ of 400 G and ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{c}1}$ of 5 G are observed. Two distinct magnetic transitions are observed with an incommensurate magnetic ordering temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{m}}$ of 5.7--6 K and an antiferromagnetic N\'eel temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{N}}$ of 5.2 K. The magnetic entropy \ensuremath{\Delta}(${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{m}}$+${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{N}}$) estimated between 2 and 10 K is 10.4 J/mol K. The effective internal field which causes the nearly reentrant behavior is 2 kG at 5.2 K.

Abstract

A superconducting transition temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ of 8.0 K is reported for the nonmagnetic (${\mathrm{Th}}^{4+}$) ${\mathrm{ThNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C compound with the ${\mathrm{LuNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C-type structure and a derived coherence length \ensuremath{\xi}(0) of 230 \AA{} and a penetration depth \ensuremath{\lambda}(0) of 860 \AA{}. No transition down to 2 K was observed for the magnetic, mixed-valence (${\mathrm{U}}^{4+}$/${\mathrm{U}}^{6+}$ or average valence of +5.2) ${\mathrm{UNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C compound with the same structure. Systematic variation of ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ for the quaternary and pseudoquaternary compounds in the R${\mathrm{Ni}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C system (R=Sc, Y, La, Lu, Th, U, or magnetic lanthanides) is studied through the variation of ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ with the R ionic radius, Ni-Ni nearest-neighbor in-plane distance, and the normal-state Pauli-like temperature-independent paramagnetic susceptibility. Maximum ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ at 16.6 K for ${\mathrm{LuNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C with an optimum Ni-Ni distance of 2.45 \AA{} was observed, along with a large normal-state Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility. As a comparison, the 8.0-K ${\mathrm{ThNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C superconductor has a longer Ni-Ni distance of 2.60 \AA{} and a smaller normal-state susceptibility. Variations of the Ni(3d)-dominated conduction band and the density of states at the Fermi level N(${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{F}}$) are believed to be the driving force for the ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ variation of nonmagnetic compounds in the present system.

17. Creating an artificial two-dimensional Skyrmion crystal by nanopatterning

Abstract

A Skyrmion crystal typically arises from helical spin structures induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Experimentally its physical exploration has been impeded because it is a rarity and is found only within a narrow temperature and magnetic field range. We present a method for the assembly of a two-dimensional Skyrmion crystal based upon a combination of a perpendicularly magnetized film and nanopatterned arrays of magnetic vortices that are geometrically confined within nanodisks. The practical feasibility of the method is validated by micromagnetic simulations and computed Skyrmion number per unit cell. We also quantify a wide range in temperature and field strength over which the Skyrmion crystal can be stabilized without the need for any intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which otherwise is needed to underpin the arrangement as is the case in the very few known Skyrmion crystal cases. Thus, our suggested scheme involves a qualitative breakthrough that comes with a substantial quantitative advance.

It is demonstrated that through the correlation between the recoil protons and forward moving charged fragments, the core fragment knockout and valence nucleon knockout reaction mechanisms can be discriminated at energies around 100 MeV/u. The 5He ground-state resonance was reconstructed based on the selection of the valence nucleon knockout mechanism. The resonance parameters were obtained for both carbon and hydrogen targets, which are consistent with those previously reported in the literature. The importance of selecting appropriate reaction mechanisms is discussed based on reconstructions using events with larger transverse momentum transfer.

Abstract

Quasielastic scattering of $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ on a $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ target was measured at 82.3 MeV/nucleon. Special care was taken to treat the background subtraction at very small angles. The measured differential cross-sections show a large enhancement at small angles relative to the Rutherford cross-section, similar to those observed at lower energies for the scattering of halo nuclei. The overall structure of the cross-section is reasonably reproduced by the optical model calculations. The inelastic channels which populate two low-lying excited states of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ target nucleus were included in the framework of the coupled channel analysis. Further systematic theoretical analysis is encouraged.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of halo nucleus 6He on proton target were measured at 82.3 MeV/u. The experimental results are well reproduced by optical model calculations using global potential KD02 with a reduction of the depth of real volume part by a factor of 0.7. A systematic analysis shows that this behavior might be related to the weakly bound property of unstable nuclei.

Abstract

Anisotropic Fe K-edge and As K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) measurements on superconducting (T_c = 52 K) (Sm_{0.95}La_{0.05})FeAs(O_{0.85}F_{0.15}) field-aligned microcrystalline powder are presented. The angular dependence of Fe pre-edge peak (dipole transition of Fe-1s electrons to Fe-3d/As-4p hybrid bands) relative to the tetragonal ab-plane of aligned powder indicates larger density of state (DOS) along the c-axis, and is consistent with the LDA band structure calculation. The anisotropic Fe K-edge spectra exhibit a chemical shift to lower energy compared to FeO which are closely related to the itinerant character of Fe^{2+}-3d^6 orbitals. The anisotropic As K-edge spectra are more or less the mirror images of Fe K-edge due to the symmetrical Fe-As hybridiztion in the FeAs layer. Abstract

A superconducting transition around 15--16 K is reported for metastable, as-melted ${\mathrm{ScNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C samples. Zero resistivity ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$(zero) was observed at 14.6 K with ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$(onset) around 16.5 K. A consistent diamagnetic ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ signal was observed around 14.8--15.6 K. The new superconducting phase was identified as isostructural to the quaternary ${\mathrm{LuNi}}_{2}$${\mathrm{B}}_{2}$C-type phase with tetragonal lattice parameters a=3.34 \AA{} and c=10.2 \AA{}. This superconducting phase is unstable due to the extremely small ${\mathrm{Sc}}^{3+}$ ionic size, where the Sc atom is located in the cavity formed by the B-Ni-B-C network and no superconducting transition could be observed down to 5 K after 1050 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C annealing.

Abstract

Breakup reactions of the double borromean nucleus 8He were measured at 82.3 MeV/u on CH2 and C targets. The coincident detection of two decaying neutrons and the high performance for neutron cross talk rejection are realized in this experiment. The relative energy spectrum for 8He was reconstructed with good statistics. The spectrum exhibits a structure of two resonant peaks, one at an excitation energy of about 3.0 and the other at about 4.14 MeV, respectively. Substantially larger cross section for the first resonance is observed in comparison to the results reported previously.

Abstract

We performed micromagnetic simulations of the current-induced domain wall motion in permalloy nanowires with rectangular cross-section. In the absence of the nonadiabatic spin-transfer term, a threshold current, Jc is required to drive the domain wall moving continuously. We find that Jc is proportional to the maximum cross product of the demagnetization field and magnetization orientation of the domain wall and the domain wall width. With varying both the wire thickness and width, a minimum threshold current in the order of 106 A/cm2 is obtained when the thickness is equivalent to the wire width. With the nonadiabatic spin-transfer term, the calculated domain wall velocity ν equals to the adiabatic spin transfer velocity u when the current is far above the Walker limit Jw. Below Jw, ν=βαu, where β is the nonadiabatic parameter and α is the damping factor. For different β, we find the Walker limit can be scaled as Jw=α|β-α|Jc. Abstract

We have compared the normal fluid vorticity and the superfluid vorticity in Taylor-Couette flow of He II. We have found that when the normal fluid vorticity is large the method of free energy minimization correctly predicts the superfluid vorticity to be nearly equal to the normal fluid vorticity. When the normal fluid vorticity is small, however, free energy minimization is no longer valid. The lowest free energy state becomes a limit which the system approaches but never quite achieves. The evidence suggests that the dynamics of vortex growth and decay and the presence of residual vorticity determine the superfluid vortex state.

Abstract

WOS: 000430909600001, Using a sample of 4.48 x 10(8) Psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we study the two-photon decays of the pseudoscalar mesons pi(0,) eta , eta' , eta(1405), eta(1475), eta(1760), and X(1835) in J/Psi radiative decays using Psi(3686) -> pi(+) pi(-) J/Psi events. The pi(0), eta, and eta' mesons are clearly observed in the two-photon mass spectra, and the branching fractions are determined to be B(J/Psi -> gamma pi(0) -> 3 gamma) = (3.57 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.16) x 10(-5), B(J/Psi -> gamma eta -> 3 gamma) = (4.42 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.18) x 10(-4), and B(J/Psi -> gamma eta' -> 2 gamma) = (1.26 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.05) x 10(-4), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.
