Among the reactions driving stellar evolution during carbon burning, 12C + 12C fusion provides the key ingredients. This system reveals many resonances, but also regions with suppressed fusion cross-sections. The reaction was recently measured by the STELLA collaboration utilizing the gammaparticle coincidence technique for precise cross-section measurements reaching down to the Gamow window of massive stars. From the experimental data, reaction rates were determined by approximating a hindrance parametrization and by adding on top a resonance at the lowest measured energy. The impact of these reaction rates on the evolution of massive stars was explored with models of 12 and 25 M⊙ using the stellar evolution code GENEC, and a detailed study of the resulting nucleosynthesis with a 1454 elements network was performed. The sensitivity of the STELLA experimental cross-sections on the temperature range for C-burning for the stellar models studied were presented. The final abundances and their impacts on stellar evolution were discussed.

Transfer reactions are important tool in nuclear astrophysics. These reactions allow us to identify states in nuclei and to find the corresponding energies, to determine if these states can contribute to astrophysical nuclear reactions and ultimately to determine the strength of that contribution. In this paper,the basic details of how transfer reactions may be used in nuclear astrophysics are set out along with some common pitfalls to avoid.

Several experiments around the world are looking for a new particle, named Dark Boson, which may do the link between the Ordinary Matter (which forms basically stars, planets, interstellar gas...) and the Hidden Sectors of the Universe. This particle, if it exists, would act as the messenger of a new fundamental interaction of nature. In this paper, the underlying Dark Sectors theory will be introduced first. A non-exhaustive summary of experimental studies carried out to date and foreseen in the incoming years will be presented after,including the 8Be anomaly. The last section will provide a status of the New JEDI**** project which aims to investigate the existence or not of a Dark Boson in the MeV range.

We present 12C+12C direct fusion measurements with STELLA UKFATIMA, that reach into the region of astrophysics interest relevant to massive stars (M⊙ ≈ 25) using self-supporting thin rotating carbon foils [1]. We demonstrate that detecting gammas and light charged particles in coincidence with nanosecond timing is key for effective background reduction achieving reliable measurements in the sub-nanobarn range. We give details about core developments of the detection apparatus as well as the coincidence-analysis procedure of low count statistics. The present data largely follows the phenomenological hindrance interpolation and shows indication for resonant behaviour at the lowest energy explored.

Some observed abundances in globular clusters have suggested the existence of multiple generations of stars within the clusters as the observations require temperature ranges higher than current stars. The 30Si(p,γ)31P reaction plays a key role in the synthesis of the observed abundances. The study of the 30Si(3He,d)31P transfer reaction is a tool for constraining the strengths of low-lying resonances, and the proton partial widths are the main ingredients for calculating those strengths. We present the method used for estimating the proton partial widths and their associated uncertainties.

Among reactions with strong impact on classical novae model predictions, 30P(p,γ)31S is one of the few remained that are worthy to be measured accurately, because of their rate uncertainty, as like as 18F(p,α)15O and 25Al(pγ)26Si. To reduce the nuclear uncertainties associated to this reaction, we performed an experiment at ALTO facility of Orsay using the 31P(3He,t)31S reaction to populate 31S excited states of astrophysical interest and detect in coincidence the protons coming from the decay of the populated states in order to extract the proton branching ratios. After a presentation of the astrophysical context of this work, the current situation of the 30P(p,γ)31S reaction rate will be discussed. Then the experiment set-up of this work and the analysis of the single events will be presented.

This contribution is focused on the STELLA project (STELlar LAboratory), which aims at the measurement of fusion cross sections between light heavy ions like 12C+12C, 12C+16O or 16O+16O at deep subbarrier energies. The gamma-particle coincidence technique is used in order to reduce background contributions that become dominant for measurements in the nanobarn regime. The experimental setup composed of an ultra high vacuum reaction chamber, a set of 3 silicon strip detectors, up to 36 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators from the UK FATIMA collaboration, and a fast rotating target system will be described. The 12C+12C fusion reaction has been studied from Elab = 11 to 5.6 MeV using STELLA at the Andromède facility in Orsay, France. Preliminary commissioning results are presented in this article.

The experimental setup STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) is designed for the measurement of deep sub-barrier light heavy ion fusion cross sections. For background suppression the γ-particle coincidence technique is used. In this project, LaBr3 detectors from the UK FATIMA (FAst TIMing Array) collaboration are combined with annular silicon strip detectors customized at IPHC-CNRS, Strasbourg, and the setup is located at Andromède, IPN, Orsay. The commissioning of the experimental approach as well as a sub-barrier 12C +12C → 24Mg∗ cross section measurement campaign are carried out.

The 12C+12C fusion reaction is one of the most important for nuclear astrophysics since it determines the carbon ignition in stellar environments. Two experiments which make use of the gamma-particle coincidence technique to measure the 12C+12C S-factors at deep sub barrier energies are discussed. Results are presented showing a decrease of the S-factor below Ec.m. = 3 MeV.

Proton inelastic scattering experiments at energy Ep=200 MeV and a spectrometer scattering angle of 0° were performed on 144,146,148,150Nd and 152Sm exciting the IsoVector Giant Dipole Resonance (IVGDR). Comparison with results from photo-absorption experiments reveals a shift of resonance maxima towards higher energies for vibrational and transitional nuclei. The extracted photo-absorption cross sections in the most deformed nuclei, 150Nd and 152Sm, exhibit a pronounced asymmetry rather than a distinct double-hump structure expected as a signature of K-splitting. This behaviour may be related to the proximity of these nuclei to the critical point of the phase shape transition from vibrators to rotors with a soft quadrupole deformation potential. Self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations using the SLy6 Skyrme force provide a relevant description of the IVGDR shapes deduced from the present data.

Knowledge of the low-lying monopole strength in C12—the Hoyle state in particular—is crucial for our understanding of both the astrophysically important 3α reaction and of α-particle clustering. Multiple theoretical models have predicted a breathing mode of the Hoyle State at Ex≈9 MeV, corresponding to a radial in-phase oscillation of the underlying α clusters. The C12(α,α′)C12 and C14(p,t)C12 reactions were employed to populate states in 12C in order to search for this predicted breathing mode. A self-consistent, simultaneous analysis of the inclusive spectra with R-matrix lineshapes, together with angular distributions of charged-particle decay, yielded clear evidence for excess monopole strength at Ex≈9 MeV which is highly collective. Reproduction of the experimentally observed inclusive yields using a fit, with consistent population ratios for the various broad states, required an additional source of monopole strength. The interpretation of this additional monopole resonance as the breathing-mode excitation of the Hoyle state would provide evidence supporting a D3h symmetry for the Hoyle state itself. The excess monopole strength may complicate analysis of the properties of the Hoyle state, modifying the temperature dependence of the 3α rate at T9≳2 and ultimately, the predicted nucleosynthesis in explosive stars.

The 26Al abundance holds a special role in present-day astrophysics, since it is a probe of active nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and a valuable constraint of Galactic core-collapse supernovae rate. It is estimated through the detection of the 1809-keV γ-line of the daughter 26Mg and from the superabundance of 26Mg in comparison with the most abundant 24Mg isotope in meteorites. Accurate knowledge of the reaction rates involving 26Al, its stable counterpart 27Al and 24Mg is then mandatory. Moreover, these nuclei enter the MgAl cycle playing an important role in the production of Al and Mg isotopes. Recently, high-resolution stellar surveys have shown that the Mg-Al anti-correlation in red giants of globular clusters may hide the existence of multiple stellar populations, and that the relative abundances of Mg isotopes may not show correlation with Al.The common thread running through these astrophysical scenarios is the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction, which is the main 27Al destruction channel and directly correlates its abundance with the 24Mg one. Since available reaction rates show an order of magnitude uncertainty owing to the vanishingly small cross section at astrophysical energies, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method to deduce the reaction rate with no need of extrapolation. The indirect measurement made it possible to assess the contribution of the 84-keV resonance and to lower the upper limits on the strength of nearby resonances, with potential important impact for astrophysics. In particular, modifications in the 27Al and 24Mg abundances up to ∼30% are predicted for intermediate mass stars.

We used a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph to study neutron pair-correlated 0+ states in 136Ba, produced via the Ba138(p,t) reaction. In conjunction with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, these data benchmark part of the dominant Gamow-Teller component of the nuclear matrix element (NME) for 136Xe neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. We demonstrate for the first time an evaluation of part of a 0νββ decay NME by use of an experimental observable, presenting a new avenue of approach for more accurate calculations of 0νββ decay matrix elements.
