Density effects have great importance for studying the state of matter at high energy densities both for astrophysical and laboratory objects. At the moment, the question remains as to which model should be used for the description of the effect of ionization potential depression (IPD) in plasma with densities up to solid-state ones. Recent X-ray free-electron laser based researches claimed the adequacy of an early IPD model of Ecker and Kroll over the well-accepted model of Stewart and Pyatt, provided that these two models give significantly different predictions. Subsequent researches performed with optical lasers have received the opposite result. This work is intended to resolve the existing contradiction in conclusions of mentioned experiments. For the first time, the IPD effect for Si XIII ions of plasma generated by an ultrarelativistic optical laser pulse was described and quantified. We demonstrate the "disappearance" of electronic states up to the state with a principal quantum number of n = 4 (inclusively); the plasma density was varied from the critical to the near-solid one. A radiation-collision code PrismSPECT was used to distinguish different IPD models.

Acceleration of particles from the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses up to $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{21}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{W}\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ with thin foils is investigated experimentally. The electron beam parameters varied with decreasing spot size, not just laser intensity, resulting in reduced temperatures and divergence. In particular, the temperature saturated due to insufficient acceleration length in the tightly focused spot. These dependencies affected the sheath-accelerated protons, which showed poorer spot-size scaling than widely used scaling laws. It is therefore shown that maximizing laser intensity by using very small foci has reducing returns for some applications.

International audience; We describe a platform developed on the LULI2000 laser facility to investigate the evolution of Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) in scaled conditions relevant to young Supernovae Remnant (SNR) up to 200 years. An RT unstable interface is imaged with a short-pulse laser-driven (PICO2000) x-ray source, providing an unprecedented simultaneous high spatial (24 µm) and temporal (10 ps) resolution. This experiment provides relevant data to compare with astrophysical codes, as observational data on the development of RTI at the early stage of the SNR expansion are missing. A comparison is also performed with FLASH radiative magneto-hydrodynamic simulations.

Direct metrology of coherent short-wavelength beamlines is important for obtaining operational beam characteristics at the experimental site. However, since beam-time limitation imposes fast metrology procedures, a multi-parametric metrology from as low as a single shot is desirable. Here a two-dimensional (2D) procedure based on high-resolution Fresnel diffraction analysis is discussed and applied, which allowed an efficient and detailed beamline characterization at the SACLA XFEL. So far, the potential of Fresnel diffraction for beamline metrology has not been fully exploited because its high-frequency fringes could be only partly resolved with ordinary pixel-limited detectors. Using the high-spatial-frequency imaging capability of an irradiated LiF crystal, 2D information of the coherence degree, beam divergence and beam quality factor M 2 were retrieved from simple diffraction patterns. The developed beam metrology was validated with a laboratory reference laser, and then successfully applied at a beamline facility, in agreement with the source specifications.

A method for determining the crystal reflectivity curve, based on the use of a broadband X-ray source and an additional spectrometer with preliminarily measured characteristics is proposed. Such a technique does not allow determination of the absolute reflectivity, but makes it possible to measure the dependence of its relative values on the wavelength. Using X-ray radiation of relativistic dense laser plasma, the reflection curve of a spherically bent mica crystal is measured in the range of 6.7–8.7 A. The obtained reflectivity curve is used to correctly interpret X-ray spectra of dense plasma generated during the interaction a petawatt laser pulse with solid targets.

Basic nuclear-astrophysics problems that can be studied under laboratory conditions at a laserradiation intensity of 1018 W/cm2 or more are specified. These are the lithium problem, the problem of determining neutron sources for s-processes of heavy-element formation, the formation of bypassed stable p-nuclei, and nuclear reactions involving isotopes used by astronomers for diagnostics purposes. The results of experiments at the Neodym laser facility are presented, and proposals for further studies in these realms are formulated.

The emission of X-rays from solid tin targets irradiated by low-energy (few mJ) femtosecond laser pulses propagated through air plasma sparks is investigated. The aim is that to better understand the X-ray emission mechanism and to show the possibility to produce proper radiation for spectroscopic and imaging applications with a table-top laser system. The utilization of a controlled ultrashort prepulse is found necessary to optimize the conversion efficiency of laser energy into Lα radiation. The optimum contrast between the main pulse and the controlled prepulse is found about 102. A correlation between the laser contrast value and the laser near-infrared spectra at the exit of the plasma spark is observed.

The overview of the recent results for discovery and investigations of a very exotic phenomenon – optical mirage in the X-ray spectral range – is presented. It was found that the mirage could be created in the form of coherent virtual point source, emerging in the vicinity of the second plasma in two-stage oscillator-amplifier X-ray laser. The X-ray source-mirage, rigidly phased with the initial radiation of generator, occurs only when amplification takes place in the amplifier plasma and leads to the appearance of the interference pattern in the form of concentric rings in the spatial profile of the output X-ray laser beam. The equation describing the emergence of X-ray mirage was found, numerical solution of which shows that its formation is similar to that of the optical mirages observed at propagation of light rays through an inhomogeneously heated air. Obtained results have already demonstrated novel comprehension into the physical nature of amplification of X-ray radiation, opening additional opportunities for X-ray interferometry, holography, and other applications, which require multiple rigidly phased sources of coherent radiation.

A combination of a petawatt laser and nuclear physics techniques can crucially facilitate the measurement of exotic nuclei properties. With numerical simulations and laser-driven experiments we show prospects for the Laser-driven Exotic Nuclei extraction–acceleration method proposed in [M. Nishiuchi et al., Phys, Plasmas 22, 033107 (2015)]: a femtosecond petawatt laser, irradiating a target bombarded by an external ion beam, extracts from the target and accelerates to few GeV highly charged short-lived heavy exotic nuclei created in the target via nuclear reactions.

The Spectr-W3 database was developed in 2001–2013 and is available online (http://spectrw3. snz.ru). The database contains information on various spectroscopic constants of atoms and ions such as the wavelengths and probabilities of radiative transitions, energy levels of atoms and ions, ionization potentials, autoionization rates, and the parameters of analytical approximation of cross sections and rates of collisional transitions in atoms and ions. Spectr-W3 presently contains around 450 thousand records and is the world’s largest factual database on spectral properties of multicharged ions. A new stage of development of Spectr-W3, which involves adding a new section titled “Emission Spectrograms” to the database, commenced in 2014. In contrast to the already existing sections that contain tabulated data, this new section provides graphical data (with necessary explanatory notes) on the spectrograms of emission of atoms and ions excited in various plasma sources. The structure of sections of the Spectr-W3 database is characterized, and examples of queries and the corresponding search results are given.

The two-temperature, 2D hydrodynamic code Hydro–ELectro–IOnization–2–Dimensional (HELIO2D), which takes into account self-consistently the laser energy absorption in a target, ionization, heating, and expansion of the created plasma is elaborated. The wide-range two-temperature equation of state is developed and used to model the metal target dynamics from room temperature to the conditions of weakly coupled plasma. The simulation results are compared and demonstrated a good agreement with experimental data on the Mg target being heated by laser pulses of the nanosecond high-energy laser for heavy ion experiments (NHELIX) at Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung. The importance of using realistic models of matter properties is demonstrated.

We discuss the new regime of high-order harmonic generation by relativistic -irradiance multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers focused onto gas jet targets [PRL, 108, 135004, 2012; NJP, 16, 093003, 2014]. The laser induces multi-stream relativistic plasma flow resulting in the formation of density singularities: structurally stable, oscillating electron spikes coherently emitting high-frequency radiation. Here we analyse the dependence of the harmonic yield on the focal spot quality and derive the required laser parameters for efficient harmonics generation. We show the status of the J-KAREN-P laser [IEEE J. Sel. Topics Quantum Electron., 21, 1601118, 2015] and report on the progress towards satisfying these requirements.

The physics of compressible turbulence in high energy density (HED) plasmas is an unchartered experimental area. Simulations of compressible and radiative flows relevant for astrophysics rely mainly on subscale parameters. Therefore, we plan to perform turbulent hydrodynamics experiments in HED plasmas (TurboHEDP) in order to improve our understanding of such important phenomena for interest in both communities: laser plasma physics and astrophysics. We will focus on the physics of supernovae remnants which are complex structures subject to fluid instabilities such as the Rayleigh–Taylor and Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities. The advent of megajoule laser facilities, like the National Ignition Facility and the Laser Megajoule, creates novel opportunities in laboratory astrophysics, as it provides unique platforms to study turbulent mixing flows in HED plasmas. Indeed, the physics requires accelerating targets over larger distances and longer time periods than previously achieved. In a preparatory phase, scaling from experiments at lower laser energies is used to guarantee the performance of future MJ experiments. This subscale experiments allow us to develop experimental skills and numerical tools in this new field of research, and are stepping stones to achieve our objectives on larger laser facilities. We review first in this paper recent advances in high energy density experiments devoted to laboratory astrophysics. Then we describe the necessary steps forward to commission an experimental platform devoted to turbulent hydrodynamics on a megajoule laser facility. Recent novel experimental results acquired on LULI2000, as well as supporting radiative hydrodynamics simulations, are presented. Together with the development of LiF detectors as transformative X-ray diagnostics, these preliminary results are promising on the way to achieve micrometric spatial resolution in turbulent HED physics experiments in the near future.

A high repetition rate scintillator-based transverse beam profile diagnostic for laser-plasma accelerated proton beams has been designed and commissioned. The proton beam profiler uses differential filtering to provide coarse energy resolution and a flexible design to allow optimisation for expected beam energy range and trade-off between spatial and energy resolution depending on the application. A plastic scintillator detector, imaged with a standard 12-bit scientific camera, allows data to be taken at a high repetition rate. An algorithm encompassing the scintillator non-linearity is described to estimate the proton spectrum at different spatial locations.

We report on the J-KAREN-P laser facility at QST, which can provide PW peak power at 0.1 Hz on target. The system can deliver short pulses with an energy of 30 J and pulse duration of 30 fs after compression with a contrast level of better than 1012. Such performance in high field science will give rise to the birth of new applications and breakthroughs, which include relativistic particle acceleration, bright x-ray source generation, and nuclear activation. The current achieved laser intensity on target is up to > 9x1021 Wcm-2 with an energy of ~9 J on target. The interaction with a 3 to 5- μm stainless steel tape target provides us electrons with a typical temperature of more than 10 MeV and energetic proton beams with typical maximum energies of > 40 MeV with good reproducibility. The protons are accelerated in the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration regime, which is suitable for many applications including as an injector into a beamline for medical use, which is one of our objectives.

The short review on the possible applications of the hollow ion spectra for the diagnostics of the high-temperature plasma created by intensive laser and particle beams is presented. Because of the hollow ion spectra features are defined mainly by the mechanisms of their excitation, we consider the various types of the high-temperature plasma where different excitation processes are important. It is shown that like ordinary spectral lines, spectra of the hollow ions offer considerable diagnostic opportunities. At the present time, hollow ion spectra are used mainly to investigate plasma heated by X-ray radiation, but the hollow ions must be generated when plasma is heated by fast heavy ion beams too. In this case, the resultant substance state will be also characterized by solid-state density, and some spatial regions of targets will have relatively low temperatures, i.e., will be a nonideal plasma. It is emphasized that hollow ion spectra are promising diagnostic tool for both nonideal plasma and warm dense matter.

The possibility is discussed of using optical laser radiation with an intensity of W cm to create an ultraintense X-ray source capable of producing polychromatic radiation with a power flux of W cm or higher. X-ray radiation of so high an intensity permits not only transforming a condensed matter of the target into a plasma state but also obtaining an exotic plasma state with a high density of hollow ions. Currently not yet in wide use and available in only a few laboratories in the world, lasers with a radiation intensity of about W cm are more compact and less expensive than free-electron X-ray lasers or lasers used for the indirect heating of fusion targets. The source under discussion can produce by far higher X-ray intensities than plasma X-ray lasers of a similar scale.

An inhomogeneous spatial distribution of laser accelerated carbon/oxygen ions produced via the hydrodynamic ambipolar expansion of CO2 clusters has been measured by using CR-39 detectors. An inhomogeneous etch pits spatial distribution has appeared on the etched CR-39 detector installed on the laser propagation direction, while homogeneous ones are appeared on those installed at 45°and 90°from the laser propagation direction. From the range of ions in CR-39 obtained by using the multi-step etching technique, the averaged energies of carbon/oxygen ions for all directions are determined as 0.78 ± 0.09 MeV/n. The number of ions in the laser propagation direction is about 1.5 times larger than those in other directions. The inhomogeneous etch pits spatial distribution in the laser propagation direction could originate from an ion beam collimation and modulation by the effect of electromagnetic structures created in the laser plasma.

The shape of the X-ray pulse generated by picosecond laser plasma is experimentally studied. The unusual phenomenon was experimentally observed for the first time for targets made of moderate-heavy chemical elements, namely, the pulse of hard X-ray radiation generated by laser plasma at the laser radiation flux of ~1018 W cm-2 had a longer duration than the pulse of softer X-ray radiation. A simple kinetic model is suggested for explaining this fact. We have suggested a method for controlling the temporal shape of X-ray pulse emitted by laser plasma by varying the contrast of laser pulse.

K-shell spectra of solid Al excited by petawatt picosecond laser pulses have been investigated at the Vulcan PW facility. Laser pulses of ultrahigh contrast with an energy of 160 J on the target allow studies of interactions between the laser field and solid state matter at 1020 W/cm2. Intense X-ray emission of KK hollow atoms (atoms without n = 1 electrons) from thin aluminum foils is observed from optical laser plasma for the first time. Specifically for 1.5 μm thin foil targets the hollow atom yield dominates the resonance line emission. It is suggested that the hollow atoms are predominantly excited by the impact of X-ray photons generated by radiation friction to fast electron currents in solid-density plasma due to Thomson scattering and bremsstrahlung in the transverse plasma fields. Numerical simulations of Al hollow atom spectra using the ATOMIC code confirm that the impact of keV photons dominates the atom ionization. Our estimates demonstrate that solid-density plasma generated by relativistic optical laser pulses provide the source of a polychromatic keV range X-ray field of 1018 W/cm2 intensity, and allows the study of excited matter in the radiation-dominated regime. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of hollow atom radiation is found to be a powerful tool to study the properties of high-energy density plasma created by intense X-ray radiation.

The results of work on choosing and substantiating promising lines of research in the realms of laboratory astrophysics with the aid of powerful lasers are presented. These lines of research are determined by the possibility of simulating, under laboratory conditions, problematic processes of presentday astrophysics, such as (i) the generation and evolution of electromagnetic fields in cosmic space and the role of magnetic fields there at various spatial scales; (ii) the mechanisms of formation and evolution of cosmic gamma-ray bursts and relativistic jets; (iii) plasma instabilities in cosmic space and astrophysical objects, plasma jets, and shock waves; (iv) supernova explosions and mechanisms of the explosion of supernovae featuring a collapsing core; (v) nuclear processes in astrophysical objects; (vi) cosmic rays and mechanisms of their production and acceleration to high energies; and (vii) astrophysical sources of x-ray radiation. It is shown that the use of existing powerful lasers characterized by an intensity in the range of 1018–1022 W/cm2 and a pulse duration of 0.1 to 1 ps and high-energy lasers characterized by an energy in excess of 1 kJ and a pulse duration of 1 to 10 ns makes it possible to perform investigations in laboratory astrophysics along all of the chosen promising lines. The results obtained by experimentally investigating laser plasma with the aid of the laser facility created at Central Research Institute of Machine Building (TsNIIMash) and characterized by a power level of 10 TW demonstrate the potential of such facilities for performing a number of experiments in the realms of laboratory astrophysics.

A simple theoretical recipe is proposed to estimate the size of the secondary electron cloud, generated in matter by incoming hard X-ray photons. An exclusive response of the LiF crystal to deposited X-ray doses by proportional generation of secondary electrons, which cause creation of color centers density inside the crystal, provides a unique possibility to validate the theoretical predictions for the size of the electron cloud with submicron resolution. The radius of the electron cloud measured for 10.1 keV photons is in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

It was shown (Faenov et al., 2015b) that the energy of femtosecond laser pulses with relativistic intensity approaching to ~1021 W/cm2 is efficiently converted to X-ray radiation and produces exotic states in solid density plasma periphery. We propose and show by one-dimensional two-temperature hydrodynamic modeling, that applying two such unique ultra-bright X-ray sources with intensities above 1017 W/cm2 – allow to generate shock waves with strength of up to some hundreds Mbar, which could give new opportunities for studies of matter in extreme conditions.

A short review of our experimental studies on generation of photon and particle beams in submicron clusters irradiated by intense, high-contrast (similar to 10(8-)10(10)) femtosecond laser pulses is presented. It is shown that highly-efficient laser-cluster interaction allows creating bright sources of X-ray, high-energy electron and ion beams. The examples of applications of femtosecond-laser-produced cluster plasmas (FLPCP) for X-ray and ion beams radiography are presented.

In various media the elementary components can emit traveling waves such as electromagnetic, gravitational or acoustic types. If these elementary emitters are synchronized, the resulting emission is coherent. Moreover, the faster the emitters approach an observer, the more intense and directional their apparent emission is, with associated frequency increase. Multi-stream flows ubiquitously occur in media (such as with shock waves and jets in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas) and produce fast moving density singularities, where high concentration and synchronism can bring constructive interference. However, a singularity emitting such characteristic coherent radiation has not been demonstrated yet. We show this general phenomenon in laser-driven relativistic plasma, which is an ideal medium for realizing these effects in the laboratory under controllable conditions. Our experiments and simulations reveal bright coherent soft x-ray radiation from nanoscale electron density singularities in multi-stream plasma. They constitute a new compact x-ray source of ultrashort duration, demanded in numerous applications. In general, singularities can be bright sources of other types of traveling waves. Thus our findings open new opportunities in different fields of science. For example, gravitational wave generation, as proposed in ultrahigh-energy accelerators, can be significantly enhanced by intentionally induced density singularities in the particle bunches. Further, we anticipate that multi-stream flows in cosmic media can produce intense bursts of coherent electromagnetic and/or gravitational waves, especially at longer wavelengths which facilitate constructive interference. We can then expect to observe more directional short wavelength bursts from cosmic emitters approaching at relativistic speeds. Thus, we present a new framework for interpreting a broad range of experimental results.

WOS:000373585800006 PubMed:27176413 An analysis of an electron spectrometer used to characterize fast electrons generated by ultraintense (10(20) W cm(-2)) laser interaction with a preformed plasma of scale length measured by shadowgraphy is presented. The effects of fringing magnetic fields on the electron spectral measurements and the accuracy of density scale-length measurements are evaluated. 2D EPOCH PIC code simulations are found to be in agreement with measurements of the electron energy spectra showing that laser filamentation in plasma preformed by a prepulse is important with longer plasma scale lengths (> 8 mu m). The spectrum variation and the coherent properties of the high-order harmonics (HOH) generated by an oscillating electron spikes formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and a bow wave, which are created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense gas jet plasma, are investigated. This new mechanism for HOH generation efficiently produces emission from ultraviolet up to the XUV “water window” spectral range. To characterize such source in the wide spectral range a diffraction imaging technique is applied. High spatial resolution EUV and soft X-ray LiF film detector have been used for precise measurements of diffraction patterns. The measurements under observation angle of 8° to the axis of laser beam propagation have been performed. The diffraction patterns were observed on the detector clearly, when the square mesh was placed at the distance of 500 mm from the output of plasma and at the distance of 27.2 mm in front of the detector. It is shown that observed experimental patterns are well consistent with modeled ones for theoretical HOH spectrum, provided by particle-in-cell simulations of a relativistic-irradiance laser pulse interaction with underdense plasma (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The results of the recent experiments focused on study of x-ray radiation from multicharged plasmas irradiated by relativistic (I > 1019 W/cm2) sub-ps laser pulses on Leopard laser facility at NTF/UNR are presented. These shots were done under different experimental conditions related to laser pulse and contrast. In particular, the duration of the laser pulse was 350 fs or 0.8 ns and the contrast was varied from high (10−7) to moderate (10−5). The thin laser targets (from 4 to 750 μm) made of a broad range of materials (from Teflon to iron and molybden to tungsten and gold) were utilized. Using the x-ray diagnostics including the high-precision spectrometer with resolution R ∼ 3000 and a survey spectrometer, we have observed unique spectral features that are illustrated in this paper. Specifically, the observed L-shell spectra for Fe targets subject to high intensity lasers (∼1019 W/cm2) indicate electron beams, while at lower intensities (∼1016 W/cm2) or for Cu targets there is much less evidence for an electron beam. In addition, K-shell Mg features with dielectronic satellites from high-Rydberg states, and the new K-shell F features with dielectronic satellites including exotic transitions from hollow ions are highlighted.

The effects of self-absorption of X-ray spectral lines have been experimentally observed in the plasma of cluster targets. It has been shown that, since a cluster target is condensed in the femtosecond time scale and gaseous in the picosecond time scale, self-absorption effects can observed for X-ray spectral lines that are predominantly emitted during the action of a laser pre-pulse. The self-absorption effects are manifested as spectral lines with asymmetric profiles where the long-wavelength wing is suppressed compared to the short-wavelength wing. The observation of asymmetric contours is important for the diagnostics of the laser-cluster interaction because it enables the conclusion of whether the laser pre-pulse completely destroys the cluster and makes it possible to quantitatively estimate the size of the central region of the cluster, which has a solid-state density to the moment of the arrival of the main laser pulse.

Neutron imaging by color center formation in LiF crystals was applied to a sensitivity indicator (SI) as a standard samples for neutron radiography. The SI was exposed to a 5 mm pinhole-collimated thermal neutron beam with an LiF crystal and a neutron imaging plate (NIP) for 120 min in the JRR-3M thermal neutron radiography facility. The image in the LiF crystal was read out using a laser confocal microscope. All gaps were clearly observed in images for both the LiF crystal and the NIP. The experimental results showed that LiF crystals have excellent characteristics as neutron imaging detectors in areas such as high spatial resolution.

Ultrashort X-ray laser pulse acts onto electron subsystem of dielectrics such as LiF and transfers matter into a two-temperature state with hot electrons excited by the pulse from valence to conduction band. Because of the small heat conduction, the hydrodynamic motion proceeds in adiabatic regime keeping the radiation attenuation depth Datt as the only scale of the spatial heat distribution. Hydrodynamic motion qualitatively changes with absorbed energy increase. At low fluences F ∼ 10mJ/cm 2 a spallative removal of LiF remaining in solid state takes place. This is a reason for the low ablation threshold. The paper presents new experimental findings supporting this conclusion. For the first time these findings are obtained using ultrashort extreme vacuum ultraviolet-free electron laser (EUV-FEL). In the case of high fluence, also achieved in our experiments at EUV-FEL, material removal happens as result of outflow of matter transferred into the gaseous state. This explains the slow growth of the amount of ablated mass with significant fluence increase.

At the Kansai Photon Science Institute of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, we have developed a Compton backscattered X-ray source in the energy region of a few hundred keV. The X-ray source consists of a 150-MeV electron beam, with a pulse duration of 10 ps (rms), accelerated by a Microtron accelerator and an Nd:YAG laser, with a pulse duration of 10 ns (FWHM). In the first trial experiment, the X-ray flux is estimated to be (2.2±1.0)×10 2 photons/pulse. For the actual application of an X-ray source, it is important to increase the generated X-ray flux as much as possible. Thus, for the purpose of increasing the X-ray flux, we have developed the pulse compression system for the Nd:YAG laser via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The SBS pulse compression has the great advantages of a high conversion efficiency and a simple structure. In this article, we review the present status of the Compton backscattered X-ray source and describe the SBS pulse compression system.

Laser-matter interaction is defined by an electronic band structure of condensed matter and frequency ωL of electromagnetic radiation. In the range of moderate fluences, the energy absorbed by electrons from radiation finally thermalizes in the ion thermal energy. The thermalization processes are different for optical as compared with X-ray quanta and for metals relative to semiconductors and dielectrics, since the light absorption and electron-electron, electron-ion dynamics are sensitive to the electron population in a conduction band and the width of a forbidden gap. Although the thermalization processes are different, the final state is simply a heated matter. Laser heating creates powerful stresses in a target if duration of a laser pulse τL is short in acoustic time scale. Nucleation and material removal take place under such stresses. Such way of removal is called here the spallative ablation. Thus the spallative ablation is an ablation mechanism universally important for qualitatively different materials and quanta. c

We study the charcteristics of X-ray radiation of a laser plasma generated in the interaction of a femtosecond pulse with solid targets in an air medium and conside the possibility of using it for radiography. We show that the mechanism for generating X-ray radiation in the interaction of short, powerful laser pulses with solid targets in a gas atmosphere is related to the generation of fast electrons in the gas breakdown region. We prove experimentally that under such conditions, even under relatively low laser radiation densities

Demonstration of neutron imaging by color center formation in LiF crystals is reported. Neutron radiography images of various objects, including thin Au wires, Cd plates, Gd plates and thin liquid tubes, have been recorded. The data show that neutron imaging with LiF has many excellent properties: high spatial resolution of 5.4 μm, little granular noises, good linearity and large dynamic range. The high resolution neutron imaging with LiF will be useful for various applications such as quantitative characterizations of neutron sources and electric devices, comprising of low-Z elements such as Li-ion batteries and fuel cells.

The characteristics of X rays of a laser plasma generated in the interaction of a femtosecond pulse with solid targets in an air atmosphere have been investigated. It has been shown that the mechanism for the generation of X rays in the interaction of short intense laser pulses with solid targets in a gas atmosphere is attributed to the generation of fast electrons in the region of the filamentation of a laser pulse. It has been proven experimentally that under such conditions, the solid target irradiated by laser radiation of even a low density of about 1015 W/cm2 very efficiently emits ∼10-keV photons. It has been shown theoretically that the maximum energy of accelerated electrons can reach ɛmax ∼ 100–200 keV under these conditions. This means that the proposed method can provide characteristic radiation with the energy of photons much higher than 10 keV.

An improved high luminosity, easily spectrally tunable backlighting scheme based on a spherically bent crystal is considered in this paper. Contrary to the traditional backlighting scheme, we used crystal far from normal incidence, and the backlighter source was inside the Rowland circle. With the presented configuration, we obtained a spatial resolution up to 8 µm in the desired direction with an X-ray backlighting energy close to 5 keV. Detailed discussions and ray-tracing calculations show that with this convenient scheme resolution down to 5 µm can be achieved. A dedicated application to high energy density physics is presented: the radiography of shock compressed matter.

We present the results of experiments on the generation of both high and low frequency electromagnetic radiation from the nonlinear interaction of intense laser beams with underdense plasmas. High frequency radiation is generated as a result of the reflection of a near-infrared laser beam by breaking plasma waves. In the proof-of-principle experiment, a 2 TW, 76 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulse was focused to generate wake waves, and a ~0.1 TW laser pulse was focused to collide with the electron density modulations. Frequencies of the reflected light were 56–110 times higher than that of the initial laser. The estimated number of photons per solid angle was 3×107 photons/sr. Low frequency radiation is emitted by the plasma as well. We found that the polarization of the radiation was similar to that of the driver laser. These properties are in accordance with the generation mechanism by relativistic solitons.

At high intensities of interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with various targets, numerous high-energy particles emitted from plasma in all directions lead to the appearance of parasitic peaks in the X-ray spectra of femtosecond laser plasma (FLP) during detection of these peaks with a detector based on a charge-coupled device (CCD). The algorithm proposed in this study allows identification of parasitic peaks in a series of experimental spectra, which are recorded for each pixel of the CCD detector independently of other pixels, and removal of these peaks. The algorithm is able to detect peaks in the presence of both variations in the intensities of spectral lines and very intense noise. The efficiency of the algorithm has been confirmed via testing with the use of a series of model spectra and spectra of Fe and Al ions recorded in experiments devoted to studies of the interaction of ultrahigh-intensity and ultrashort laser pulses with solid targets.

International audience; Although bipolar jets are seen emerging from a wide variety of astrophysical systems, the issue of their formation and morphology beyond their launching is still under study. Our scaled laboratory experiments, representative of young stellar object outflows, reveal that stable and narrow collimation of the entire flow can result from the presence of a poloidal magnetic field whose strength is consistent with observations. The laboratory plasma becomes focused with an interior cavity. This gives rise to a standing conical shock from which the jet emerges. Following simulations of the process at the full astrophysical scale, we conclude that it can also explain recently discovered x-ray emission features observed in low-density regions at the base of protostellar jets, such as the well-studied jet HH 154.

We report on the first observation of high-n hollow ions (ions having no electrons in the K or L shells) produced in Si targets via pumping by ultra-intense x-ray radiation produced in intense laser-plasma interactions reaching the radiation dominant kinetics regime (RDKR). The existence of these new types of hollow ions in high-energy density plasma has been found via observation of highly resolved x-ray emission spectra of silicon plasma. This has been confirmed by plasma kinetics calculations, underscoring the ability of powerful radiation sources to fully strip electrons from the innermost shells of light atoms. Hollow-ions spectral diagnostics provide a unique opportunity to characterize powerful x-ray radiation of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. With the use of this technique we provide evidence for the existence of the RDKR via observation of asymmetry in the observed radiation of hollow ions from the front and rear sides of the target.

As femtosecond laser pulses increase in intensity and decrease in duration, interaction between the focused laser radiation and a substance is followed by a sharp increase in the intensity of fast-electron, ion, and electromagnetic noise generation. In turn, the noise signals of X-ray detectors grow in amplitude and the signal-to-noise ratio in recording X-ray spectra of multiply charged ions approaches unity. A significant excess of the noise level over the useful signal is observed in plasmas generated by laser pulses with a power density of >= 10(17) W/cm(2). The most powerful effect of the above factors is exerted on X-ray spectra recorded by such electromagnetic equipment as CCD-based detectors, photoelectron amplifiers, etc. A new '' mean-median '' algorithm is described, with which it is possible to considerably increase the signal-to-noise ratio of CCD detectors used to measure X-ray spectra of femtosecond laser-produced plasma.

International audience; We present experiments dealing with a femtosecond laser-driven cluster-based plasma, where by analyzing the nonlinear phenomenon of satellites of spectral lines of Ar XVII, we revealed the nonlinear phenomenon of the generation of the second harmonic of the laser frequency. For performing this analysis we developed new results in the theory of satellites of spectral lines. From such lineshape analysis we found, in particular, that the efficiency of converting the short (40 fs) intense (3x10 18 W/cm 2) incident laser light into the second harmonic was 2%. This result is in the excellent agreement with the 2-Dimensional Particle-In-Cell (2D PIC) simulation that we also performed. There is also an order of magnitude agreement between the thresholds for the SHG found from the line shape analysis and from the 2D PIC simulations.

Recent progress of the coherent x-ray research using the transient collisional excitation (TCE) laser and higher-order harmonics from relativistic plasmas is reviewed. We also describe the future prospects of this research field in JAEA which involve short wavelength coherent x-ray generation using a petawatt class driver laser and application studies using high average power TCE laser.

International audience; During the last ten years, the ability of high power lasers to generate high energy density shocks has made them a reliable tool to study extreme states of matter. These states of matter are relevant in many important physics areas such as astrophysics, planetology and ICF physics. Here, we present some representative studies performed by using a driven laser shock: melting of iron at pressures relevant for geophysics, developments of new techniques to measure the density of highly compressed matter and a study of a radiative shock.

Experimental data on neutron production in a plasma generated on a Be target by a picosecond laser of intensity 2 x 10{sup 18} W/cm{sup 2} are presented. In contrast to previous measurements, a Ta converter is not used in this study to generate {gamma} rays. The neutron yield is equal to 2 x 10{sup 3} over a solid angle of 4{pi} steradians per laser pulse. A simultaneous measurement of the maximum energy of hard x rays gave E{sub {gamma}}{sub max} {approx} 6 MeV, the number of these photons being 5 x 10{sup 8} over an angle of 4{pi} steradians per laser pulse. The energy distributions of fast electrons and photons are estimated theoretically.
