Abstract: The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI laboratory measured the direct and elliptic flow of neutrons and light charged particles in the reaction 197Au+197 Au at 400 A MeV incident energy. The ratio of elliptic flow of neutrons with respect to that of the light charged particles was used as main experimental observable to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state. Results, obtained by comparison of the experimental data with the UrQMD model predictions, strongly support a moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy at suprasaturation densities below 2ρ0.

The results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model simulations favoured a moderately soft symmetry term, but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. These results have been confirmed by an independent analysis based on the Tübingen QMD simulations. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration. Abstract: International audience; In the ASY-EOS experiment flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for (197)Au+(197)Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon, in order to investigate the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. By comparing the experimental data with the UrQMD transport model predictions, we have extracted a new constraint in agreement with the moderately soft to linear density dependence obtained in the former analysis on FOPI-LAND data, but reducing the associated uncertainty by a factor ∼ 2.

The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011.

Abstract: KRATTA, a new, low threshold, broad energy range triple telescope array has been built to measure the energy, emission angles and isotopic composition of light charged reaction products. It has been equipped with fully digital chains of electronics. The array performed very well during the ASY-EOS experiment, conducted in May 2011 at GSI. The structure and performance of the array are presented using the first experimental results.

Abstract: Directed and elliptic flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for the reaction 197Au+197Au at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy within the ASY-EOS experimental campaign at the GSI laboratory. The detection system consisted of the Large Area Neutron Detector LAND, combined with parts of the CHIMERA multidetector, of the ALADIN Time-of-flight Wall, and of the Washington-University Microball detector. The latter three arrays were used for the event characterization and reaction-plane reconstruction. In addition, an array of triple telescopes, KRATTA, was used for complementary measurements of the isotopic composition and flows of light charged particles. From the comparison of the elliptic flow ratio of neutrons with respect to charged particles with UrQMD predictions, a value \gamma = 0.72 \pm 0.19 is obtained for the power-law coefficient describing the density dependence of the potential part in the parametrization of the symmetry energy. It represents a new and more stringent constraint for the regime of supra-saturation density and confirms, with a considerably smaller uncertainty, the moderately soft to linear density dependence deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data. Abstract: International audience; The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI laboratory measured the direct and elliptic flow of neutrons and light charged particles in the reaction 197Au+197 Au at 400 A MeV incident energy. The ratio of elliptic flow of neutrons with respect to that of the light charged particles was used as main experimental observable to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state. Results, obtained by comparison of the experimental data with the UrQMD model predictions, strongly support a moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy at suprasaturation densities below 2ρ0.

Abstract: International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for ^197Au+^197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract: The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011., Comment: Talk given by P. 14. The β-ray energy and angular response of the EYE-D™ eye-lens dosemeter

Abstract: Following the recent ICRP recommendation to decrease the limit of occupational exposure to the eye lens from 150 mSv to 20 mSv/year, a dedicated individual eye-lens dosemeter, EYE-D™, was developed at the IFJ PAN. This dosemeter uses MCP-N (LiF:Mg,Cu,P) thermoluminescent detectors covered with a polyamide capsule and was so far optimized to achieve a flat photon energy and angular response for X-ray exposures typical in interventional radiology. To verify the applicability of this eye-lens dosemeter in external β-ray fields which arise, e.g. in nuclear medicine procedures, we measured and calculated its β-ray energy and angular response. Measurements, applying β-rays from Sr-90/Y-90 isotope, were performed at the Beta Secondary Standard type 2 (BSS 2) in CLOR. Calculations, using the PENELOPE Monte Carlo transport code which simulates coupled electron and photon transport in arbitrary materials, were performed for P-32, K-42 and Sr-90/Y-90 fields to simulate doses received by the eye lens within the human body. PENELOPE Monte Carlo transport code was also used to calculate doses received with EYE-D™ detectors. We found good agreement between the measured and calculated energy and angular responses which confirms the suitability of this dosemeter in assessing Hp(3) to estimate the eye lens. Obtained results and conclusions, however preliminary, conform with current ICRP recommendations when performing individual radiation protection dosimetry in external β-ray fields occurring in nuclear industry and nuclear medicine activities.

Abstract: Spectator fragments resulting from relativistic heavy ion collisions, consisting of single protons and neutrons along with groups of stable nuclear fragments up to nitrogen $(Z=7)$, are measured in PHOBOS. These fragments are observed in Au+Au $(\sqrt{{s}_{{}_{NN}}}=19.6\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV})$ and Cu+Cu (22.4 GeV) collisions at high pseudorapidity $(\ensuremath{\eta})$. The dominant multiply-charged fragment is the tightly bound helium $(\ensuremath{\alpha})$, with lithium, beryllium, and boron all clearly seen as a function of collision centrality and pseudorapidity. We observe that in Cu+Cu collisions, it becomes much more favorable for the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ fragments to be released than lithium. The yields of fragments approximately scale with the number of spectator nucleons, independent of the colliding ion. The shapes of the pseudorapidity distributions of fragments indicate that the average deflection of the fragments away from the beam direction increases for more central collisions. A detailed comparison of the shapes for $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and lithium fragments indicates that the centrality dependence of the deflections favors a scaling with the number of participants in the collision.

Abstract: Angular distributions for the 7Li(18O, 16N)9Be reaction at an energy of E lab ( O 18 ) = 114 MeV for the ground and excited states of 9Be and 16N were measured. The data were analyzed within the coupled-reaction-channels method for one- and two-step transfers of nucleons and clusters. The 7Li + 18O optical potential fitted to the 7Li + 18O elastic and inelastic scattering data was used in the reaction calculations. The needed spectroscopic amplitudes for transferred nucleons and clusters were calculated within the translational-invariant shell model. The 9Be + 16N potential parameters were deduced by fitting 7Li(18O, 16N)9Be reaction data for ground and excited states of 9Be and 16N. The reaction is dominated by deuteron transfer. The 9Be + 16N potential is compared with the 9Be + 16O potential deduced by fitting previously reported 9Be + 16O elastic scattering data at energies E c.m. = 5.4 – 100.9 MeV and found to be less strongly absorbing.

Abstract: Complete angular distributions of the 13C + 18O elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at the energy Elab(O18)=105 MeV (Ec.m.=44.03 MeV). These and the 13C + 18O scattering data taken from the literature at the energies Ec.m.=6.29–13.94 MeV were analyzed within the optical model and coupled-reaction-channels methods. Sets of Woods–Saxon 13C + 18O optical potential parameters were obtained. The 13C + 18O scattering data and deduced potential parameters are compared with those for 12C + 18O and 13C + 16O previously measured and analyzed. The 13C + 18O elastic scattering is well described by potential scattering over its complete angular range. The 13C + 18O inelastic-scattering data were well described over the entire angular range as arising from collective excitations of the states in the target and projectile nuclei.

Abstract: Nuclear multifragmentation in d (4.4 GeV) + Au collision was studied with the 4π setup FASA installed at the external beam of the Dubna Nuclotron. Data obtained are analyzed within the statistical model of multifragmentation. It is found that the kinetic energy spectra of intermediate mass fragments deviate from the predicted ones. It is explained by the collective flow caused by the thermal expansion of fragmenting nucleus.

Abstract: We have measured inclusive data on K + -meson production in pp collisions at COSY Julich close to the hyperon production threshold and determined the hyperon–nucleon invariant mass spectra. The spectra were decomposed into three parts: Λp, Σ 0 p and Σ + n . The cross section for the Σ + n channel was found to be much smaller than a previous measurement in that excess energy region. The data together with previous results at higher energies are compatible with a phase space dependence.

Abstract: The relative velocity correlation function of pairs of intermediate mass fragments has been studied for d+Au collitions at 4.4 GeV. Experimental correlation functions are compared to that obtained by multibody Coulomb trajectory calculations under the assumption of various decay timees of the fragmenting system. The combined approach with the empirically modified intranuclear cascade code followed by the statistical multifragmentation model was used to generate the starting conditions for these calculations. Abstract: The longitudinal velocity and isotopic distributions of forward emitted fragments have been measured in the 11 B (32.9 AMeV ) + 9 Be (27 Al ,197 Au ) reactions. The range of isotopes from Helium to Nitrogen has been observed. The particular interest of this experiment has been to investigate the influence of direct and dissipative processes on the fragment production for different targets. The fast velocity component characterized by a Gaussian shape is rather well described in the frame of simple statistical fragmentation model, but with smaller value of the width of the distribution. Isotopic and velocity distributions have been compared to Universal Parameterization model implemented in the LISE + + code. Increased yields of 4 He and 7 Li isotopes are observed as a possible influence of the cluster structure of the 11 B nuclei on the total reaction mechanisms.

Abstract: Complete angular distributions of the 12C + 18O elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at the energy E lab(18O) = 105 MeV (E c.m. = 42 MeV) . Comparison of these elastic-scattering data with those from previously measured 12C + 16O data show their large-angle cross-sections to differ by as much as a factor of 100 with the 16O data being the largest. These and the 12C + 18O scattering data taken from the literature at the energies E c.m. = 12.9-56 MeV were analysed within the optical model and coupled-reaction-channels methods. Sets of Woods-Saxon 12C + 18O optical potential parameters were obtained and their energy dependence was deduced. A similar analysis was carried out for 12C + 16O where it was shown that over a wide energy range, the primary difference in the 16O and 18O scattering potentials is in their imaginary parts. The large-angle enhancement for the 12C + 18O elastic-scattering was shown to arise from the transfer of nucleons. The inelastic-scattering data were well described over the entire angular range as arising from collective excitations of the states in the target and projectile nuclei.

Abstract: The reaction p p → K + + ( Λ p ) was measured at T p = 1.953 GeV and Θ = 0 ° with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Λp final state interaction. The large final state enhancement near the Λp threshold can be described using the standard Jost-function approach. The singlet and triplet scattering lengths and effective ranges are deduced by fitting simultaneously the Λp invariant mass spectrum and the total cross section data of the free Λp scattering.

Abstract: The relative velocity correlation function of pairs of intermediate mass fragments has been studied for d + Au collisions at 4.4 GeV. Experimental correlation functions are compared to that obtained by multi-body Coulomb trajectory calculations under the assumption of various decay times of the fragmenting system. The combined approach with the empirically modified intranuclear cascade code followed by the statistical multifragmentation model was used to generate the starting conditions for these calculations. The fragment emission time is found to be less than 40 fm c −1.

Abstract: In view of the implementation of beam-monitoring sensors for CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and also in order to validate Thermoluminescence Detectors as a versatile tool to measure ionizing radiation doses in mixed fields at hadron colliders such as the LHC, chemical vapor deposition diamond sensors have been evaluated and calibrated at CERN's Proton Synchrotron accelerator. Special attention was paid to understanding whether lithiumfluoride thermoluminescence detectors are suitable as measuring devices in these radiation fields.

Abstract: Angular distributions for the 7Li(18O, 17O)8Li reaction were measured for the transitions to the ground and excited states of 8Li and 17O at the energy E lab ( O 18 ) = 114 MeV . The data were analyzed with coupled-reaction-channels method for one- and two-step transfers of nucleons and clusters. In the analysis, the Li 7 + O 18 potential deduced in the analysis of the elastic Li 7 + O 18 -scattering data as well as shell-model spectroscopic amplitudes of transferred nucleons and clusters were used. The deduced Li 8 + O 17 optical potential needed to describe the ground state transfer has a weaker imaginary potential than that of the previously deduced 7Li potential but a very similar real one. The data are well described assuming a single neutron transfer over the complete angular range.

Abstract: The angular distributions of the unpolarised differential cross section and tensor analysing power $A_{xx}$ of the $\vec{d}d\to\alpha \eta$ reaction have been measured at an excess energy of 16.6 MeV. The ambiguities in the partial-wave description of these data are made explicit by using the invariant amplitude decomposition. This allows the magnitude of the s-wave amplitude to be extracted and compared with results published at lower energies. In this way, firmer bounds could be obtained on the scattering length of the $\eta \alpha$ system. The results do not, however, unambiguously prove the existence of a quasi-bound $\eta \alpha$ state.

Abstract: The extracted s-wave scattering amplitude from both the polarized and unpolarized d + d → 4He + η reaction at 2385.5 MeV/c allowed to determine the scattering length which fulfills the requirements for bound η. In the p + 27Al → 3He + p + π- + X reaction studied at recoil free kinematics the η meson is produced almost at rest and so it can be bound with enhanced probability. This state proceeds via N*(1535) resonance and the decay products proton and pion emitted into opposite direction are detected in concidence with 3He produced at zero degree. Under these conditions some hints for bound state can be observed with an upper limit of the cross section of ≈ 0.5 nb.

Abstract: þ ðLpÞ K þ =pþ separation abstract A new threshold Cherenkov detector has been built for the detection of charged pions in the focal plane of a magnetic spectrograph. Silica aerogel with refractive index of n ¼ 1:05 is applied as a radiator. The detector exhibits a very high detection efficiency for pions with momenta X900 MeV=c. Using two Cherenkov detectors in series a very high pion suppression factor of 10 5 was achieved.

Abstract: Thermoluminescent (TL) dosimeters are routinely used to monitor absorbed doses in many kinds of radiation fields which contain photons, electrons and neutrons. However, TLDs are mainly calibrated to photon sources. We studied the response of TLDs to complex secondary fields arising during the operation of high-energy accelerators (e.g. the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN). The experiments were conducted at the CERN–EU high-energy reference field facility (CERF). Six different LiF-based TLDs (MTS-N, MTS-7, MTS-6, MCP-N, MCP-7, MCP-6) were exposed to various secondary CERF's fields (both for high and low doses), by placing them at various positions: at the target and concrete top and side positions. For the experiment at the target the corresponding Monte Carlo calculations were also carried out using the FLUKA transport code and compared with experimental results. In addition, alanine dosimeters were used as an independent reference. The results show that TLDs are well suited for monitoring radiation fields around the LHC. Nevertheless, further investigations are required, some of which are in progress.

Abstract: The energy and angular response of the MTS-N (LiF:Mg,Ti) and MCP-N (LiF:Mg,Cu,P) TL detectors inside the RADOS personal dosemeters to X-rays photons in the energy range 16–250 keV and incidence angles 0°, 30°, 40°, 50°, ± 60 ∘ and 137 Cs and 60 Co sources was measured. The irradiations were performed at the Dosimetry Laboratory of the Austrian Research Centers Seibersdorf. The dosemeters were centered on the front surface of the ISO water slab phantom ( 30 × 30 × 15 cm 3 ) and irradiated with reference photon radiation qualities N (the narrow spectrum series), and S–Cs and S–Co nuclide radiation qualities, specified in ISO 4037 (1999) . In addition, the energy response to photons of the dosemeter with MCP-N detectors has been calculated using the Monte Carlo transport code MCNP5. The simulation model of the personal dosemeter badge was set up according to the technical drawings. The results of simulations are in good agreement with measurements, except at the lowest (16 keV) photon energy. The results have confirmed that the RADOS personal dosemeter with MTS-N detectors (used by LADIS dosimetry service of the IFJ, Krakow) fulfils the requirements setup in the IEC 61066 (2006) technical recommendations for TL systems for personal dosimetry. These requirements are also fulfilled by the RADOS dosemeter equipped with highly sensitive MCP-N detectors.

Abstract: Angular distributions of the 7Li + 10B elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at the energy E lab (10B) = 51 MeV (21 MeV c.m.). These and previously measured 7Li + 10B elastic-scattering data known at the 7Li-beam energies 24 MeV (14.1 MeV c.m.) and 39 MeV (22.94 MeV c.m.) were analyzed within the optical model and coupled-reaction channels method to determine the energy dependence of the parameters of the scattering potential and find the difference of these parameters from that of 7Li + 11B scattering. It was found that the 7Li + 11B potential parameters fail to describe the 7Li + 10B scattering data. The biggest difference is observed between the depths of the imaginary potentials that describe these scatterings.

Abstract: Total and differential cross sections for the d p → He 3 η reaction have been measured near threshold for He 3 center-of-mass momenta in the range from 17.1 MeV/c to 87.5 MeV/c. The data were taken during a slow ramping of the COSY internal deuteron beam scattered on a proton target detecting the He 3 ejectiles with the COSY-11 facility. The forward–backward asymmetries of the differential cross sections deviate clearly from zero for center-of-mass momenta above 50 MeV/c indicating the presence of higher partial waves in the final state. Below 50 MeV/c center-of-mass momenta a fit of the final state enhancement factor to the data of the total cross sections results in the He 3 – η scattering length of | a | = 4.3 ± 0.5 fm .

Abstract: Angular distributions of the 7Li + 18O elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at the energy E lab (18O) = 114 MeV (32 MeV c.m.) in inverse kinematics. This technique allowed both small and large angle data to be collected simultaneously. The data were analyzed within the optical model and coupled-reaction-channels method to determine the potential parameters of 7Li + 18O scattering and reaction channels dominating the scattering. 18O inelastic scattering deformation parameters were obtained. The present data show that the 7Li + 18O system has a much stronger absorption when compared to previously measured 7Li + 16O data. The derived optical model parameters clearly show the scattering difference between two systems.

36. A model for distinguishing between static and dynamic exposure of personal thermoluminescence dosimeters

Abstract: To distinguish between static and dynamic (normal) exposure of personal TL dosimeters, a model of radiation deposition and of TL light transport in the TLD dosimeter is proposed. The RADOS dosimeter badge using MCP-N (LiF:Mg,Cu,P) TL detectors with standard filters replaced by special Pb and Cu filters with a pattern of holes or inserts was modelled. The photon radiation transport in the dosimeter and energy deposition in the TL detector were simulated by the Penelope Monte Carlo transport code. The model of TL light transport within the TL pellet takes into account the distribution of energy deposition in the TL detector, light self-absorption in the detector and reflection of TL light of the heating planchet. The shape and hole pattern of the filters were optimized with respect to best distinction between static and dynamic exposures. The results of calculations were verified experimentally by exposing RADOS badges with modified filters to beams of low energy X-rays directed at various angles.

Abstract: An experiment to search for the bound state of η meson in nuclei has been performed at COSY, Juelich using the ENSTAR detector and Big Karl magnetic spectrometer. Reaction (p,3 He ) on 27 Al target has been used to search for the η-mesic nucleus 25 Mg η in the missing mass distribution from the measured 3 He particles. A preliminary figure of 1.5 nb for the upper limit of the formation cross section of η-nucleus bound state has been determined.

Abstract: Sigma+ hyperon production was measured at the COSY-11 spectrometer via the p p --> n K+ Sigma+ reaction at excess energies of Q = 13 MeV and Q = 60 MeV. These measurements continue systematic hyperon production studies via the p p --> p K+ Lambda/Sigma0 reactions where a strong decrease of the cross section ratio close-to-threshold was observed. In order to verify models developed for the description of the Lambda and Sigma0 production we have performed the measurement on the Sigma+ hyperon and found unexpectedly that the total cross section is by more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted by all anticipated models. After the reconstruction of the kaon and neutron four momenta, the Sigma+ is identified via the missing mass technique. Abstract: Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid--fog phase transition deep inside the spinodal region. The experimental data for p(8.1GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed. It is concluded that the decay process of hot nuclei is characterized by two size parameters: transition state and freeze-out volumes. The similarity between dynamics of fragmentation and ordinary fission is discussed. Abstract: The PHOBOS collaboration has studied the pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of charged particles produced in heavy ion collisions. Results from Au+Au collisions at various center-of-mass energies and over a broad range of centrality are presented here. The data are compared to Cu+Cu, p+p and d+Au collisions at corresponding energies and centralities. The data are found to exhibit simple scaling properties such as the observed factorization of collision energy and geometry dependences. The presented data help us distinguish between models of particle production in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Abstract: Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear liquid-fog phase transition inside the spinodal region. The exclusive data for p(8.1 GeV) + Au collisions are analyzed within the framework of the statistical model SMM. It is found that the partition of hot nuclei is specified after expansion to a volume equal to V t = (2.6 ± 0.3)V 0. The freeze-out volume is found to be twice as large: V f = (5 ± 1)V 0. The similarity between multifragmentation and ordinary fission is discussed.

43. Mechanisms of charge-exchange in the 12C(7Li, 7Be)12B reaction at the beam energy of 82 MeV

Abstract: Angular distributions for the transitions to the ground and excited states of 12 B from the 12 C( 7 Li, 7 Be) 12 B reaction at 82 MeV were measured. The data were analyzed in the framework of distorted wave born approximation for the direct charge-exchange and coupled reaction channels method for the two-step sequential nucleon transfers. It was shown that the two-step sequential nucleon transfer is the dominant mechanism in the investigated angular range and the direct mechanism becomes important only for small angles ( θ cm 10 ° ).

Abstract: As an international collaboration PISA (Proton Induced SpAllation) has initiated measurements of total and double differential cross-sections for products of spallation reactions at the proton accelerator COSY in Julich (Germany) in order to study secondary particle production created in structural, window, and target materials by proton beams up to 2.5 GeV incident kinetic energy. In the framework of Spallation Neutron Sources and accelerator-driven systems, residual nuclei (H, He up to intermediate mass fragrments) production cross-sections are of great importance for estimation of damage in target and structural materials. Reliable and comprehensive experimental data, especially for p-energies beyond 1 GeV will serve as benchmarks for code development and validation. Data taken by Bragg curve spectroscopy and silicon detector telescopes for the reaction 1.9 GeV p+Ni(Au) will be discussed and kinetic energy spectra of light ions and intermediate mass fragments will be presented.

Abstract: Different approaches for the measurement of a relatively small gamma dose in strong fields of thermal and epithermal neutrons as used for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) have been studied with various thermoluminescence detectors (TLDs). CaF(2):Tm detectors are insensitive to thermal neutrons but not tissue-equivalent. A disadvantage of applying tissue-equivalent (7)LiF detectors is a strong neutron signal resulting from the unavoidable presence of (6)Li traces. To overcome this problem it is usual to apply pairs of LiF detectors with different (6)Li content. The experimental determination of the thermal neutron response ratio of such a pair at the Geesthacht Neutron Facility (GeNF) operated by PTB enables measurement of the photon dose. In the experimental mixed field of thermal neutrons and photons of the TRIGA reactor at Mainz the photon dose measured with different types of (7)LiF/(nat)LiF TLD pairs agree within a standard uncertainty of 6% whereas the CaF(2):Tm detectors exhibit a photon dose by more than a factor of 2 higher. It is proposed to determine suitable photon energy correction factors for CaF(2):Tm detectors with the help of the (7)LiF/(nat)LiF TLD pairs in the radiation field of interest.

Abstract: In this talk I will review PHOBOS data on charged particle multiplicities, obtained in Au + Au and d + Au collisions at RHIC. The general features of the Au + Au pseudorapidity distributions results will be discussed and compared to those of [Formula: see text] collisions. The total charged particle multiplicity, scaled by the number of participant pairs, is observed to be about 40% higher in Au + Au collisions than in [Formula: see text] and d + Au systems, but, surprisingly at the same level of e+e- collisions. Limiting fragmentation scaling is seen to be obeyed in Au + Au collisions.

47. Excitation of 14C by 45 MeV 11B ions

Abstract: Angular distributions of the 11 B + 14 C elastic scattering and inelastic scattering for transitions to a few excited states of 14 C were measured at E lab ( 11 B) = 45 MeV over the full angular range. The data were analyzed within the coupled-channels method. Contributions from one- and two-step transfer reactions were found to be negligible. Quadrupole deformation of the 14 C ground state was deduced to be negative, the deformation of the 8.318 MeV (2 + ) state was found to be similar to that of the ground state. The single particle model calculations reproduced the experimental data for transition to the 6.094 (1 − ) state of 14 C much better than the collective model analysis. The fit to this experimental data set was improved when we took into account reorientation of 11 B in its ground state and considerably enlarged the radius of the potential binding the neutron to the 13 C core. The same procedure was tested against the experimental data for transition to the 1/2 + (3.089 MeV) excited state of 13 C, populated in the 11 B + 13 C scattering at E lab ( 11 B) = 45 MeV, with the similar effect.

Abstract: The COSY-11 collaboration has conducted experiments aiming at the determination of the excitation function and phase-space population of the p p --> p p eta reaction close to the kinematical threshold. The precise data obtained with the stochastically cooled proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY and the high resolution zero-degree magnetic spectrometer allowed for the observation of the significant deviations - in the shape of the excitation function and two-particle invariant masses - from the predictions based on the assumption that the reaction phase space is homogenously populated. Comparison of the shape of the excitation function for the p p --> p p eta and p p --> p p eta-prime reaction allows to distinquish in the model independent way an influence originating from the proton-proton and proton-eta interaction. Abstract: We present the construction of a planar drift chamber with wires stretched between two arms of a c-shaped aluminium frame. The special shape of the frame allows to extendthe momentum acceptance of the COSY-11 detection system towards lower momenta without suppressing the high momentum particles. The proposed design allows for construction of tracking detectors covering small angles with respect to the beam, which can be installed and removed without dismounting the beam-pipe. Abstract: Elliptic flow is an interesting probe of the dynamical evolution of the dense system formed in the ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elliptic flow dependences on transverse momentum, centrality, and pseudorapidity were measured using data collected by the PHOBOS detector, which offers a unique opportunity to study the azimuthal anisotropies of charged particles over a wide range of pseudorapidity.
