Abstract

Cosmic ray muonography is a novel technique for imaging of the internal structures of large natural and industrial objects. It exploits the capability of high energy muons from cosmic rays to penetrate large thicknesses of large subjects to be studied, in order to obtain a density map. It uses muon flux attenuation and absorption in materials of investigated objects. Nuclear emulsions are tracking detectors well suited to be employed in muonography for investigations of inner structure of large objects up to kilometers size, since emulsions have firstly an excellent angular resolution, they are compact and robust, do not require power supply. The muonography methods are applied to study one of UNESCO world heritage objects, the unusual building in the Naryn-Kala citadel hidden underground. The use of nuclear emulsions as probing radiation detectors provides for a uniquely high resolution capacity of recording instrumentation combined with the potential of modern image analysis methods giving 3D reconstruction of the internal structures of the investigated object.

Abstract

The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/$c$ proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About $10^{11}$ muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/$c$ proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a three-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to $(3.27\pm0.07)~\times~10^{11}$ protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill. Abstract

The results obtained by measuring the efficiency of detection of charged particles (atmospheric muons) for a prototype of a polyvinyltoluene-based scintillation detector being created for the anticoincidence system of the Signal experiment on board the Interhelioprobe spacecraft are presented. These measurements rely on determining the ratio of the numbers of triple and double coincidences of pulses that arise as atmospheric muons traverse the detector system.

Abstract

Measurement results of charged particles (atmospheric muon) detection efficiency of a scintillation detector based on polyvinyltoluene, manufactured for the anticoincidence system of the "Signal" device as part of the scientific apparatus for the spacecraft "Interhelioprobe", are presented. The efficiency measurement technique is based on determination of the ratio of triple and double coincidence of the signals arising as atmospheric mu-mesons pass through the system of detectors. The results of light collection simulation in scintillation detectors by the use of Monte Carlo method are presented.

Abstract

Electrodeposited multilayer-film electromagnetic shields are very promising for protecting various devices due to high shielding efficiency and the possibility of depositing on complex-shaped objects. In this communication, we present the results of measurements of the shielding efficiency of such shields. The shields represent alternating layers of materials with high magnetic permeability (Ni-Fe) and high conductivity (Cu). The maximum number of double layers is 45. It is shown that the shielding efficiency in the weak magnetic fields (0.1–0.2 mT) is 8–10; at higher magnetic field strengths (1.5–2.5 mT), it reaches 80–100. It is shown that the shielding factor increases with the number of layers in the shield at the same thickness of a soft magnetic material. A permalloy shield at the same amount of a soft magnetic material has an efficiency lower by a factor of 3–15 depending on the magnetic field strength.

Abstract

Experiment SIGNAL is planned to take place on board the spacecraft (SC) INTERHELIOPROBE. A xenon gamma-ray spectrometer is to be used in the experiment. The gamma-ray spectrometer in question has been chosen because of its characteristics permitting detailed probing of solar gamma-radiation under rough experimental conditions. The equipment is able to provide: high energy resolution (5-6times better than that of scintillation detectors), goodperformance at high temperatures, steady operation at significant vibroacoustic load, and high radiation resistance of working substance. The aforesaid properties of the xenon gamma-ray spectrometer meet goals and objectives of the experiment SIGNAL.

Abstract

The results of the calculation of the detection efficiency of gamma-rays for the xenon gamma spectrometer (XGS) obtained using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation are presented. The gamma spectra of the set of basic standard gamma-sources (OSGI) are analyzed for a real detector, and the calculated and actual detection efficiencies are compared. The XGS spectra are analyzed to determine the minimum concentration of the 152Eu radio nuclide in the 137Cs and 60Co mixture. It is shown that the xenon gamma spectrometer is capable of detecting the isotope at concentrations above 40% in the mixture.

Abstract

In the experiment SIGNAL, which is planned to take place on board spacecraft INTERHELIOPROBE, a xenon gammaray spectrometer is to be used. Abstract

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in physical experiments as well as in applied devices. PMTs are sensitive to magnetic field, so creation of effective magnetic shields for their protection is very important. In this paper, the results of measurements of shielding effectiveness of multilayer film magnetic shields on PMT-85 are presented. Shields were formed by alternating layers of a material with high magnetic permeability (Ni-Fe) and high electric conductivity—Cu. The maximum number of bilayers reached 45. It is shown that in weak magnetic fields up to 0.5 mT, the output signal amplitude from PMT-85 does not change for all used multilayer shields. In strong magnetic field of 2–4 mT, the output signal amplitude decrease with 10%–40% depending from the number of layers in the shield. The Pulse distribution of PMT-85 in magnetic field 0.2–4 mT slightly changed in the range 1.1%–1.3% for the case when the number of layers do not exceed 10 and practically did not change for a shield with 45 double layers.

A method for 222Rn concentration monitoring by means of intensity measurement of its daughter nuclei (214Pb and 214Bi) gamma-ray emission using xenon gamma-ray spectrometer is presented. Testing and calibration results for a gamma-spectrometric complex based on xenon gamma-ray detector are described.

Abstract

A description of the xenon detector (XD) for gamma-ray line emission registration is presented. The detector provides high energy resolution and is able to operate under extreme environmental conditions (wide temperature range and unfavorable acoustic action). Resistance to acoustic noise as well as improvement in energy resolution has been achieved by means of real-time digital pulse processing. Another important XD feature is the ionization chamber’s thin wall with composite housing, which significantly decreases the mass of the device and expands its energy range, especially at low energies.

Abstract

Muon radiography is a method of study the internal structure of large natural and industrial objects based on sensing an object with a flux of cosmic muons with their subsequent registration and analysis of the pattern of their dispersion, or conplete (or partial) absorption. The Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics of Moscow State University have started a series of muon radiography experiments with nuclear emulsion detectors. As a result, the optimal conditions for experiment arrangement have been determined, algorithms of data processing have been worked out, and peculiarities of the method have been ultimately investigated.

Abstract

The description of the High Pressure Xenon Gamma-Ray Detector (HPXeD) and its main characteristics are considered in the context of the search for hidden fissile materials. The results of HPXeD measurements of gamma-radiation from radioactive sources, which are covered by lead, iron and aluminium shields, are analyzed and discussed. The use of special software for processing data is shown to improve the potential of radioactive material detection, including the identification and estimation of the main protective shield parameters.

Abstract

Designs of high pressure xenon gamma-spectrometer with high energy resolution is considered. This device is intended for research of space gamma-radiation and space gamma-bursts. It consists of four independent gamma-detectors which are cylindrical ionization chambers with shielding grids. They are filled with high pressure xenon with density 0.5 g/cm3. Working volume of each chamber is 6000 cm3. Energy resolution of the gamma-spectrometer is 2.5% at energy 662 keV and 1.5% at energy 1170 keV. Its sensitive surface equals to 2500 cm2. Abstract

Design of the cylindrical ionization chamber with shielding mesh is considered. The chamber has sensitive volume 5 liters and is filled with xenon at the pressure about 35 atm. Main characteristics of this detector are submitted: the energy resolution, efficiency of detection and position of the peak of full absorption for various energies of gamma-rays. It is shown that the energy resolution at 662 keV is 2.9% at the optimum electrical field in the chamber. Prospects of use of cylindrical compressed xenon ionization chamber with a shielding mesh in various fields of science and engineering are considered.

Abstract

Construction of cylindrical ionization chamber with shielding mesh is considered. The chamber has sensitive volume 2 liters filled by xenon with pressure about 50 atm. Main characteristics of this detector such as energy resolution and efficiency of gamma-rays with energy 0.1 - 2.0 MeV are presented. It is shown that the detector energy resolution for Eequals0,662 MeV line at optimal electric field strength in the chamber is about 4%. Comparison of experimentally measured characteristics of this detector and standard scintillator NaI(T1) is fulfilled. Applications of the high pressure xenon cylindrical ionization chamber with a shielding mesh in geology, geophysics and diagnostic of oil and gas wells are considered.

Abstract

The high pressure xenon ionization chamber was designed for measurements gamma-ray lines from cosmic sources. This chamber was installed on board of the orbital station 'MIR' and the measurements are carried out. The 1 liter's chamber was filled with 0.6 g/cm3 density xenon. The energy resolution is 3% FWHM at energy 1 MeV. This experiment has been lasting for about four years on board of the heavy orbital station. Measured background gamma-ray spectra are presented. The background gamma- ray flux is mostly generated by interaction of cosmic rays with the vessel mass. A considerable abundance in energy region 170- 260 keV was registered. This abundance is produced by the radioactive source located in uranium shield on board of transport spacecraft. Also the 511 keV annihilation line was observed. Its intensity has obvious latitude dependence. Therefore it is generated by interaction of cosmic ray with the vessel matter. Abstract

The high pressure xenon ionisation chamber was designed for measurements gamma-ray lines from cosmic sources in the energy range 0.1 - 10 MeV. This chamber was installed on board of the orbital station "MIR" and the measurements are carried out. The 3 litter's chamber was filled with 0.6 'ifcm3 density xenon mixed with hydrogen for increasing the drift velocity of electrons. The energy resolution is 1.3% FWHM at photon energy I MeV without electronics noise (2.00/o total). This experiment has been lasting for about three years without any degradation although the detector is strongly irradiated traversing the South-Atlantic anomaly four times a day. The high energy resolution of xenon ionisation chamber made it possible to register lines in gamma-ray bursts energy spectra. Up to this time we have observed events with ~Fe* deexitation and red-shifted 511 keV annihilation lines. This experiment is carried out on board of the heavy orbital station. Abstract

The results of xenon detector SIGNAL optimization for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detection in satellite experiment “INTERHELIOPROBE” are presented. We have analyzed GRBs temporal profiles and spectral parameters according to Fermi/GBM data and have modeled the xenon detector response, peak count rate and minimum temporal variation intervals for typical events of long, short and intermediate GRBs types. Detector deadtime and optimal ADC channel number had obtained.

Abstract

The paper describes a gamma-ray spectrometer and reports on its primary parameters. The base of the spectrometer is two cylindrical detectors filled with compressed xenon, whose energy resolution is 14-15 keV at 662 keV. Software developed to control the gamma-ray spectrometer and to process experimental data is also described in brief. Measurement results of gamma-ray radiation from isotopes of plutonium and uranium are given. Measurements were conducted for various time exposures. It is shown that using this equipment, one can detect and identify a single gram of plutonium within several seconds at a distance of 1 m. Possibilities of the gamma-ray spectrometer application in order to accomplish control over displacement of fissile materials are considered.

Abstract

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B > 1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. In this paper we report the main technical challenges and the relevant design options providing a comprehensive design for the magnet of the SHiP Scattering and Neutrino Detector., Minor revision, mainly to report more information concerning the analytics

Abstract

This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400~GeV$/c$ SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400~GeV$/c$ proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of $\mathcal{O}(10^6)$. To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented.
