The opinions and conclusions expressed herein are those of the authors and do not represent any funding agencies., High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. FASER$\nu$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to directly detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their cross sections at TeV energies, where no such measurements currently exist. In 2018, a pilot detector employing emulsion films was installed in the far-forward region of ATLAS, 480 m from the interaction point, and collected 12.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We describe the analysis of this pilot run data and the observation of the first neutrino interaction candidates at the LHC. The LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment at CERN aims at achieving a significantly higher luminosity than originally planned by means of two major upgrades: the Upgrade I that took place during the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) and the Upgrade II foreseen for LS4. Such an increase in instantaneous and integrated luminosity with respect to the design values requires to reassess the radiation exposure of LHC magnets, cryogenics and electronic equipment placed in the Insertion Region 8 (IR8) around LHCb. Monte Carlo simulations are a powerful tool to understand and predict the interaction between particle showers and accelerator elements, especially in case of future scenarios. For this purpose, their validation through the comparison with available measurements is a relevant step. A detailed IR8 model, including the LHCb detector, has been implemented with the FLUKA code. The objective of this study is to evaluate radiation levels due to proton-proton collisions and benchmark the predicted dose values against Beam Loss Monitor (BLM) measurements performed in 2018. Starting from LHC Run3, a first upgrade of the LHCb experiment (Upgrade I) will enable oeration with a significantly increased instantaneous luminosity in the LHC Insertion Region 8 (IR8), up to 2·10³³/(cm² s). Moreover, the proposed second upgrade of the LHCb experiment (Upgrade II) aims at increasing it by an extra factor 7.5 and collecting an integrated luminosity of 400/fb by the end of Run6. Such an ambitious goal poses challenges not only for the detector but also for the accelerator components. Monte Carlo simulations represent a valuable tool to predict the implications of the radiation impact on the machine, especially for future operational scenarios. A detailed IR8 model implemented by means of the FLUKA code is presented in this study. With such a model, we calculated the power density and dose distributions in the superconducting coils of the LHC final focusing quadrupoles (Q1-Q3) and separation dipole (D1) and we highlight a few critical issues calling for mitigation measures. Our study addresses also the recombination dipole (D2) and the suitability of the present TANb absorber, as well as the proton losses in the Dispersion Suppressor (DS) and their implications., Proceedings of the 13th International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2022, Bangkok, Thailand

After its second successful run period, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) shut down for three years with the plan of being recommissioned in 2022 for a three-year physics production period, the Run 3. The future restart of the machine coincides with the completion of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, offering to the LHC the opportunity and the challenge to operate with up to two times higher beam brightness, pending the complete installation of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which should take place in Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). In this context, Run 3 is clearly a transition between the LHC and the HL-LHC, with key ingredients which will be made available, either gradually (LIU beam) or immediately (ATS optics). Run 3 shall therefore be exploited not only for performance, but also as a full scale demonstrator of the HL-LHC in terms of beams, optics and beam manipulation (e.g. β∗ levelling over a very large dynamic range). To this aim, the so-called LHC configuration, namely the optics, needs to be adapted in order to cope or mitigate constraints of different nature, from beam brightness limitations due to the machine impedance, to specific desiderata of some LHC experiments. After reviewing these constraints, including the intensity limitations coming from the existing hardware, the beam parameters targeted for the LHC in Run 3 are given. A possible solution for the machine configuration will then be described, and analyzed from various perspectives, which should not limit the machine performance over the full Run 3, and should enable to double the integrated luminosity delivered so far to the two high luminosity insertions of the LHC.

The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) is the approved CERN project aiming at further increasing the integrated luminosity of the LHC by a factor 10. As such, it implies a complete redesign of the experimental high-luminosity insertions of ATLAS and CMS. The progressive evolution of the new layout and optics requires a continuous analysis of the radiation environment, to which magnets and other equipment are exposed to. This is assured by means of Monte Carlo simulations of the collision debris on the evolving machine model. The latter featured several developments, such as the explicit inclusion of the cold protection diodes of the final focusing circuits as well as the crab cavities cryomodule. This work presents the most updated characterization of the radiation field with FLUKA and its impact in the insertion region and the dispersion suppressor of Point 1 and 5, for the HL-LHC optics v1.5 released in 2019. This document describes the FLUKA studies of SPS-to-LHC injection losses. The TI8/IR8 model has been developed especially to understand and predict the effect of the proton impacts on the passive protection system of the SPS-to-LHC transfer line of beam 2. It provides a powerful tool for designing new loss mitigation solutions. The Run-2 commissioning data was instrumental in carry- ing out a benchmark study and building confidence into the model. The absolute comparison with experimental measurements, including a quench event, provides a better physical understanding of beam loss effects. The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade requires substantial changes in the full chain of the LHC injectors. In accordance with LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, a new transfer line protection system has been designed to attenuate HL-LHC beam to safe levels in case of mis-injection. The TI8 model was used to simulate loss effects in the new layout and to design a dedicated shielding system for the LHC-BLMs.

FASERnu is a proposed small and inexpensive emulsion detector designed to detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their properties. FASERnu will be located directly in front of FASER, 480 m from the ATLAS interaction point along the beam collision axis in the unused service tunnel TI12. From 2021-23 during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC, roughly 1,300 electron neutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASERnu with TeV-scale energies. With the ability to observe these interactions, reconstruct their energies, and distinguish flavors, FASERnu will probe the production, propagation, and interactions of neutrinos at the highest human-made energies ever recorded. The FASERnu detector will be composed of 1000 emulsion layers interleaved with tungsten plates. The total volume of the emulsion and tungsten is 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m, and the tungsten target mass is 1.2 tonnes. From 2021-23, 7 sets of emulsion layers will be installed, with replacement roughly every 20-50 1/fb in planned Technical Stops. In this document, we summarize FASERnu's physics goals and discuss the estimates of neutrino flux and interaction rates. We then describe the FASERnu detector in detail, including plans for assembly, transport, installation, and emulsion replacement, and procedures for emulsion readout and analyzing the data. Splitting of beam halo from the core by means of a bent crystal combined with a second bent crystal after the target has been suggested in order to study magnetic and electric dipole moments of short-lived particles. A similar scheme without the second crystal or other schemes with more conventional solid or gas target have been proposed to study the hadronic matter and the quark-gluon plasma, as well as to provide inputs to cosmic ray physics. Most notably, an upgrade of the existing and already productive LHCb gas target (SMOG), which would make use of a storage cell, has been proposed, designed, and extensively reviewed. The implementation in LHCb of a polarised gas target, based on the storage cell technique, was also discussed, motivated by the nucleon-spin study. The status of these proposals, their technical feasibility and impacts on the LHC machine have been studied in the LHC fixed-target working group of the Physics Beyond Collider forum at CERN. The status and outcome of these studies are presented here.

Among several working groups formed in the framework of Physics Beyond Colliders study, launched at CERN in September 2016, there is one investigating some specific fixed-target experiment proposals. Of particular interest is the study of a high-density unpolarized or polarized gas target to be installed upstream the LHCb detector using storage cells to enhance the target density. This work studies the impact of the interactions of 7 TeV proton beams with such gas targets on the LHC machine in terms of particle losses. The overall compatibility with the planned high-intensity program of the LHC is also discussed.

This report discusses the feasibility and limitations for operating the LHC and HL-LHC at the ultimate beam energy of 7.5 TeV, corresponding to a main dipole magnetic field of 8.93 T and an operating current of 12748 A.

This report contains the description of a novel research infrastructure based on a high-energy hadron collider, which extends the current energy frontier by almost a factor 2 (27 TeV collision energy) and an integrated luminosity of at least a factor of 3 larger than the HL-LHC. In connection with four experimental detectors, this infrastructure will deepen our understanding of the origin of the electroweak symmetry breaking, allow a first measurement of the Higgs self-coupling, double the HL-LHC discovery reach and allow for in-depth studies of new physics signals arising from future LHC measurements. This collider would directly produce particles at significant rates at scales up to 12 TeV. The project re-uses the existing LHC underground infrastructure and large parts of the injector chain at CERN. This particle collider would succeed the HL-LHC directly and serve the world-wide physics community for about 20 years beyond the middle of the 21st century.

FASER is a proposed small and inexpensive experiment designed to search for light, weakly-interacting particles during Run 3 of the LHC from 2021-23. Such particles may be produced in large numbers along the beam collision axis, travel for hundreds of meters without interacting, and then decay to standard model particles. To search for such events, FASER will be located 480 m downstream of the ATLAS IP in the unused service tunnel TI12 and be sensitive to particles that decay in a cylindrical volume with radius R=10 cm and length L=1.5 m. FASER will complement the LHC's existing physics program, extending its discovery potential to a host of new, light particles, with potentially far-reaching implications for particle physics and cosmology. This document describes the technical details of the FASER detector components: the magnets, the tracker, the scintillator system, and the calorimeter, as well as the trigger and readout system. The preparatory work that is needed to install and operate the detector, including civil engineering, transport, and integration with various services is also presented. As part of the post-LHC high-energy program, a study is ongoing to design a new 100 km long hadron collider, which is expected to operate at a centre-of-mass energy of 100 TeV and to accumulate up to 30 ab−1, with a peak instantaneous luminosity that could reach 30 1034cm−2s−1. In this context, the evaluation of the radiation load on the detector is a key step for the choice of materials and technologies. In this contribution, a first detector concept will be presented. At the same time, fluence distributions, relevant for detector occupancy, and accumulated damage on materials and electronics will be shown. The effectiveness of a possible shielding configuration, intended to minimise the background in the muon chambers and tracking stations, will be presented., Proceedings of the 7th Int. In the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the collimation system will be upgraded in the high-luminosity experimental regions. Additional protection is planned for the Q4 and Q5 magnets that are located further upstream of the tertiary collimators that protect the inner triplet magnets. We evaluate the effect of this proposed collimation layout for the incoming beam 1 on machine-induced background in the experimental area of IR1 (ATLAS). High-intensity and high-brightness beams are key ingredients to maximize the integrated luminosity of the LHC and exploit its full potential. This contribution will describe the optimization of the beam and machine parameters to maximize the integrated luminosity for the LHC experiments, by taking into account the expected intensity and brightness reach of the LHC and its injector chain and the capabilities of the detectors for the next run and foreseen upgrade scenarios.

The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) presently uses an internal beam dump system with two separate blocks to cleanly dispose of low and high energy beams. In view of the increased beam power and brightness needed for the LHC Injector Upgrade project for High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), the performance of this internal beam dump system has been reviewed for future operation. Different possible upgrades of the beam dumping system have been investigated. The initially considered solution for the SPS Beam Dump System is to design a new, dedicated external system, with a dump block in a shielded cavern separated from the machine ring. Unfortunately this solution is not feasible with the present technology. The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) beam dump system is a concern for the planned High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) operation. The system has initially been designed for very different beam parameters compared to those which will reign after the completion of the LHC injectors upgrade, when the SPS will have to operate with unprecedented beam brightness. This paper describes the relevant operational and failure modes of the dump system together with the expected beam loading levels. Tracking studies are presented, considering both normal operation and failure scenarios, with particular attention on the location and level of proton losses. In the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) Project, the LHC will be significantly upgraded to attain a peak luminosity of up to 8.5 × 10³⁴ cm⁻²s⁻¹, thus almost an order of magnitude higher compared to the nominal machine configuration in ATLAS at IP1 and CMS at IP5. In the view of a successful machine setup as well as a successful physics programme, beam induced background studies at IP1 were performed to investigate sources of particle fluxes to the experimental area. In particular as a start of the study, two sources forming the major contributions were simulated in detail: the first one considers inelastic interactions from beam particles hitting tertiary collimators, the second one from beam interactions with residual gas-molecules in the vacuum pipe close by the experiment, referred to as beam-halo and local beam-gas, respectively. We will present these first HL-LHC background studies based on SixTrack and FLUKA simulations, highlighting the simulation setup for the design case in the HL-LHC scenario. The LHCb detector will be upgraded during the second long shutdown (LS2) of the LHC machine, in order to increase its statistical precision significantly. The upgraded LHCb foresees a peak luminosity of L = 1-2 . 10³³ cm⁻² s^{−1}, with a pileup of 5. This represents ten times more luminosity and five times more pile up than in the present LHC. With these conditions, the pp-collisions and beam losses will produce a non-negligeable beam-induced energy deposition in the interaction region. More precisely, studies have shown that the energy deposition will especially increase on the D2 recombination dipole, which could bring them close to their safety thresholds. To avoid this, the placement of a minimal neutral absorber has been proposed. This absorber will have the same role as the TAN in the high luminosity Interaction Regions (IR) 1 and 5. This study shows the possible dimensions and location of this absorber, and how it would reduce both the peak power density and total heat load., Proceedings of the 5th Int. In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project, the collimators in the SPS-to-LHC transfer lines are presently under re-design, in order to cope with the unprecedented beam intensities and emittances required by the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Factors ruling the design phase are the robustness of the jaws on one side and, on the other side, the proton absorption and the emittance blow-up, essential for an effective protection of the equipment in the LHC injection regions and the LHC machine. In view of the new design, based on the one of the currently installed TCDI collimators and past investigations, the FLUKA Monte Carlo code is used to address these two factors. The CERN Large Hadron Collider is routinely storing proton beam intensities of more than 100 MJ, which puts extraordinary demands on the control of beam losses to avoid quenches of the superconducting magnets. Therefore, a detailed understanding of the LHC beam cleaning is required. The unprecedented design intensities of the LHC require several important advances in beam collimation. With its more than 100 collimators, acting on various planes and beams, the LHC collimation system is the biggest and most performing such system ever designed and constructed. The solution for LHC collimation is explained, the technical components are introduced and the initial performance is presented. Residual beam leakage from the system is analysed. Measurements and simulations are presented which show that collimation efficiencies of better than 99.97 % have been measured with the 3.5 TeV proton beams of the LHC, in excellent agreement with expectations., peer-reviewed

Detectors based on the micromegas principle have already been used in several atomic, nuclear and particle physics experiments. They have also been proposed as one of the options to upgrade the ATLAS muon spectrometer in the very forward/backward region. To meet this end, it is imperative to study their performance in a mixed (neutron and gamma) radiation field. The general-purpose Monte-Carlo code FLUKA has been employed in the present work in order to study the effect of 5.5 MeV neutrons impinging on a prototype micromegas detector developed for sLHC. The response of the detector to the photons originating from the inevitable neutron inelastic scattering on the surrounding materials of the experimental facility was also studied, through comparisons with experimental data. The LHC injectors are being upgraded to meet the demanding beam specification required for High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) operation. In order to reduce the beam losses which can trigger the sensitive LHC beam loss interlocks during the SPS-to-LHC beam injection process, it is important that the beam tails are properly scraped away in the SPS. The current SPS tail cleaning system relies on a moveable scraper blade, with the positioning of the scraper adjusted over time according to the orbit variations of the SPS. A new robust beam tail cleaning system has been designed which will use a fixed scraper block towards which the beam will be moved by a local magnetic orbit bump. The design proposal is presented, together with the related beam dynamics studies and results from machine studies with beam.
