Abstract

We report determination of branching fractions for the decays psi(2S)-> h+J/psi, where h=any, pi(+)pi(-), pi(0)pi(0), eta, pi(0), and gamma gamma through chi(c0,1,2). These measurements use 27M psi(2S) decays produced in e(+)e(-) collision data collected with the CLEO detector. The resulting branching fractions and ratios thereof improve upon previously achieved precision in all cases, and in combination with other measurements permit determination of B(chi(cJ)->gamma J/psi) and B(psi(2S)-> light hadrons).

Abstract

Using a sample of 2.59x10(7) psi(2S) decays collected by the CLEO-c detector, we present results of a study of chi(cJ) (J=0, 1, 2) decays into baryon-antibaryon final states. We present the world's most precise measurements of the chi(cJ)-> p (P) over bar and chi(cJ)->Lambda(Lambda) over bar branching fractions, and the first measurements of chi(c0) decays to other hyperons. These results illuminate the decay mechanism of the chi(c) states.

Abstract

Using 281 pb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO-c detector, we present new measurements of Cabibbo-suppressed decays of D-0 and D+ mesons to eta and eta(') final states. We make first observations of D-0 ->eta(')pi(0), eta eta, eta eta('), and eta pi(+)pi(-), and find evidence for D+->eta pi(+)pi(0), D+->eta(')pi(+)pi(0), and D-0 ->eta(')pi(+)pi(-). We also report on improved measurements of D-0 ->eta pi(0), D+->eta pi(+), and D+->eta(')pi(+). Using the measured two-body Cabibbo-suppressed decays, we extract amplitudes for specific flavor topologies and compare them to those from Cabibbo-favored decays.

Abstract

We exploit the quantum coherence between pair-produced D-0 and (D) over bar (0) in psi(3770) decays to study charm mixing, which is characterized by the parameters x and y, and to make a first determination of the relative strong phase delta between doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D-0 -> K+pi(-) and Cabibbo-favored (D) over bar (0)-> K+pi(-). We analyze a sample of 1.0 x 10(6) D-0(D) over bar (0) pairs from 281 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E-cm=3.77 GeV. By combining CLEO-c measurements with branching fraction input and time-integrated measurements of R-M equivalent to (x(2)+y(2))/2 and R-WS equivalent to Gamma(D-0 -> K+pi(-))/Gamma((D) over bar (0)-> K+pi(-)) from other experiments, we find cos delta = 1.03(-0.17)(+0.31) +/- 0.06, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In addition, by further including external measurements of charm mixing parameters, we obtain an alternate measurement of cos delta = 1.10 +/- 0.35 +/- 0.07, as well as xsin delta = (4.4(-1.8)(+2.7) +/- 2.9) x 10(-3) and delta = (22(-12-11)(+11+9))degrees.

Abstract

Using data taken with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have investigated the direct-photon momentum spectrum in the decay J/psi(1S)->gamma gg, via the "tagged" process: e(+)e(-)->psi(2S); psi(2S)-> J/psi pi(+)pi(-); J/psi ->gamma+X. Including contributions from two-body radiative decay processes, we find the ratio of the inclusive direct-photon branching fraction to that of the dominant three-gluon branching fraction [R-gamma=B(gg gamma)/B(ggg)] to be R-gamma=0.137 +/- 0.001 +/- 0.016 +/- 0.004, where the errors shown are statistical, systematic, and the model-dependent uncertainty related to the extrapolation to zero photon energy. The shape of the scaled photon energy spectrum in J/psi -> gg gamma is observed to be very similar to that of Upsilon -> gg gamma. The R-gamma value obtained is roughly consistent with that expected by a simple quark-charge scaling [R-gamma similar to(q(c)/q(b))(2)] of the value determined at the Upsilon(1S), but somewhat higher than the value expected from the running of the strong coupling constant.

Abstract

Using a sample of 3x10(6) psi(2S) decays collected by the CLEO III and CLEO-c detector configurations, we present results of a study of chi(c0) and chi(c2) decays into eta eta, eta eta('), and eta(')eta(') final states. We find B(chi(c0)->eta eta)=(0.31 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.02)%, B(chi(c0)->eta eta('))< 0.05% at the 90% confidence level, and B(chi(c0)->eta(')eta('))=(0.17 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.01)%. We also present upper limits for the decays of chi(c2) into these final states. These results give information on the decay mechanism of chi(c) states into pseudoscalars.

Abstract

Using 5.63 pb(-1) of data accumulated at the psi(2S) resonance with the CLEO III and CLEO-c detectors corresponding to 3.08x10(6) psi(2S) decays, a search is performed for the decay psi(2S)->eta(c)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) to test a theoretical prediction based upon the assumption that the cc pair in the psi(2S) does not annihilate directly into three gluons but rather survives before annihilating. No signal is observed, and a combined upper limit from six eta(c) decay modes is determined to be B(psi(2S)->eta(c)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))

Abstract

Using CLEO data, we study the production of the antideuteron, (d) over bar, in Upsilon(nS) resonance decays and the nearby continuum. The branching ratios obtained are B-dir(Upsilon(1S)->(d) over barX)=(3.36 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.25)x10(-5), B(Upsilon(1S)->(d) over barX)=(2.86 +/- 0.19 +/- 0.21)x10(-5), and B(Upsilon(2S)->(d) over barX)=(3.37 +/- 0.50 +/- 0.25)x10(-5), where the "dir" superscript indicates that decays produced via reannihilation of the b (b) over bar pair to a gamma(*) are removed from both the signal and the normalizing number of Upsilon(1S) decays in order to isolate direct decays of the Upsilon(1S) to ggg, gg gamma. Upper limits at 90% C.L. are given for B(Upsilon(4S)->(d) over barX)< 1.3x10(-5), and continuum production sigma(e(+)e(-)->(d) over barX)< 0.031 pb. The Upsilon(2S) data is also used to extract a limit on chi(bJ)->(d) over barX. The results indicate enhanced deuteron production in ggg, gg gamma hadronization compared to gamma(*)-> q (q) over bar. Baryon number compensation is also investigated with the large Upsilon(1S)->(d) over barX sample.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fraction of invisible Y(1S) decays, using 1.2 fb(-1) of data collected at the Y(2S) resonance with the CLEO III detector at CESR. After subtracting expected backgrounds from events that pass selection criteria for invisible Y(1S) decay in Y(2S) -> pi(+) pi(-) Y(1S), we deduce a 90% C. L. upper limit of B[Y(1S) -> invisible] < 0.39%.

Abstract

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Y(1S) resonance into the final states gamma pi(0)pi(0), gamma eta eta and gamma pi(0)eta, using 1.13 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected at root s=9.46 GeV with the CLEO III detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. In the channel gamma pi(0)pi(0), we measure the branching ratio for the decay mode Y(1S)->gamma f(2)(1270) to be (10.5 +/- 1.6(stat)(-1.8)(+1.9)(syst))x10(-5). We place upper limits on the product branching ratios for the isoscalar resonances f(0)(1500) and f(0)(1710) for the pi(0)pi(0) and eta eta decay channels. We also set an upper limit on the Y(1S) radiative decay into pi(0)eta.

Abstract

We examine e(+)e(-) -> Ds-Ds*+ and Ds*-Ds+ interactions at 4170 MeV using the CLEO-c detector in order to measure the decay constant fD(s)(+). We use the D-s(+) -> l(+)nu channel, where the l(+) designates either a mu(+) or a tau(+), when the tau(+) -> pi(+), when the tau(+) -> pi(+)(v) over bar .Analyzing both modes independently, we determine B(D-s(+) -> mu(+)nu)=(0.594 +/- 0.066 +/- 0.031)%, and B(D-s(+) ->tau(+)nu)=(8.0 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.4)%. We also analyze them simultaneously to find an effective value of Beff(D-s(+) ->mu(+)nu)=(0.638 +/- 0.059 +/- 0.033)% and extract fD(s)(+)=274 +/- 13 +/- 7 MeV. Combining with our previous determination of B(D+ -> mu(+)nu), we also find the ratio fD(s)(+)/fD(+)=1.23 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.04. We compare to current theoretical estimates. Finally, we find B(D-s(+) -> e(+)nu)< 1.3X10(-4) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Knowledge of the B-s decay fraction of the Upsilon(5S) resonance, f(S), is important for B-s meson studies at the Upsilon(5S) energy. Using a data sample collected by the CLEO III detector at CESR consisting of 0.423 fb(-1) on the Upsilon(5S) resonance, 6.34 fb(-1) on the Upsilon(4S) and 2.32 fb(-1) in the continuum below the Upsilon(4S), we measure B(Upsilon(5S)->phi X)=(13.8 +/- 0.7(-1.5)(+2.3))% and B(Upsilon(4S)->phi X)=(7.1 +/- 0.1 +/- 0.6)%; the ratio of the two rates is (1.9 +/- 0.1(-0.2)(+0.3)). This is the first measurement of the phi meson yield from the Upsilon(5S). Using these rates, and a model dependent estimate of B(B-s ->phi X), we determine f(S)=(24.6 +/- 2.9(-5.3)(+11.0))%. We also update our previous independent measurement of f(S) made using the inclusive D-s yields to now be (16.8 +/- 2.6(-3.4)(+6.7))%, due to a better estimate of the number of hadronic events. We also report the total Upsilon(5S) hadronic cross section above continuum to be sigma(e(+)e(-)->Upsilon(5S))=(0.301 +/- 0.002 +/- 0.039) nb. This allows us to extract the fraction of B mesons as (58.9 +/- 10.0 +/- 9.2)%, equal to 1-f(S). Averaging the three methods gives a model dependent result of f(S)=(21(-3)(+6))%.

Abstract

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays Upsilon(nS) -> gamma+R (n=1, 2, 3), with R a narrow resonant hadronic state decaying into four or more charged particles (plus possible neutrals). Using data collected from the CLEO III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present upper limits of order 10(-4) for such bottomonium two-body decays as a function of the mass MR recoiling opposite the photon.

Abstract

Using a sample of 3 X 10(6) psi(2S) decays recorded by the CLEO detector, we study three-body decays of the X(c)0, X-c1, and X-c2 produced in radiative decays of the psi(2S). We consider the final states pi(+) pi(-) eta, K+ K- eta pp eta, pi(+) pi(-) eta', K+ K- pi(0), pp pi(0), pi(+) K- K-S(0) and K+ p Lambda , measuring branching fractions or placing upper limits. For X-c1 -> pi(+) pi(-) eta, K+ K- pi(0), and pi(+) K- K-S(0) our observed samples are large enough to indicate the largest contributions to the substructure.

The eta meson was reconstructed in the three modes eta ->gamma gamma, eta ->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), or eta ->pi(0)pi(0)pi(0). The eta(') meson was reconstructed in the mode eta(')->pi(+)pi(-)eta with eta decaying through any of the above three modes, and also eta(')->gamma rho(0), where rho(0)->pi(+)pi(-). Five out of the seven submodes are found to have very low backgrounds. In four of them we find no signal candidates and in one [Upsilon(1S)->gamma eta('), eta(')->pi(+)pi(-)eta, eta ->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)] there are two good signal candidates, which is insufficient evidence to claim a signal. The other two submodes (eta ->gamma gamma and eta(')->gamma rho) are background limited, and show no excess of events in their signal regions. We combine the results from different channels and obtain upper limits at the 90% C.L. which are B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma eta)< 1.0x10(-6) and B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma eta('))< 1.9x10(-6). Our limits are an order of magnitude tighter than the previous ones and below the predictions made by some theoretical models.

Abstract

Using e(+)e(-)-> hadrons data collected with the CLEO-III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we study the inclusive production of baryons/antibaryons (p,Lambda) and mesons (phi and f(2)(1270)) in gluon-fragmentation and quark-fragmentation processes. We first corroborate previous per-event total particle yields in Upsilon(1S)-> ggg compared with nearby continuum (e(+)e(-)-> q (q) over bar) indicating greater (similar to x2) per-event yields of baryons in 3-gluon fragmentation. We find similar results when we extend that comparison to include the Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) resonances. With higher statistics, we now also probe the momentum dependence of these per-event particle yields. Next, we compare particle production in the photon-tagged process Upsilon(1S)-> gg gamma with that in e(+)e(-)-> q (q) over bar gamma events, to allow comparison of two-parton with three-parton particle-specific fragmentation. For each particle, we determine the "enhancement" ratio, defined as the ratio of particle yields per gluon-fragmentation event compared to quark-fragmentation event. Thus defined, an enhancement of 1.0 implies equal per-event production in gluon and quark fragmentation. In the photon-tagged analysis (Upsilon(1S)-> gg gamma compared to e(+)e(-)-> q (q) over bar gamma), we find almost no enhancement for protons (similar to 1.2 +/- 0.1), but a significant enhancement (similar to 1.9 +/- 0.3) for Lambda's. This small measured proton enhancement rate is supported by a study of baryon production in chi(b2)-> gg -> p+X relative to chi(b1)-> q (q) over barg -> p+X. Overall, per-event baryon production in radiative two-gluon fragmentation is somewhat smaller than that observed in three-gluon decays of the Upsilon(1S). Our results for baryon production are inconsistent with the predictions of the JETSET (7.3) fragmentation model.

Abstract

We present measurements of decay matrix elements for hadronic transitions of the form Upsilon(nS)->Upsilon(mS)pi pi, where (n,m)=(3,1),(2,1),(3,2). We reconstruct charged and neutral pion modes with the final state Upsilon decaying to either mu(+)mu(-) or e(+)e(-). Dalitz plot distributions for the 12 decay modes are fit individually as well as jointly assuming isospin symmetry, thereby measuring the matrix elements of the decay amplitude. We observe and account for the anomaly previously noted in the dipion invariant mass distribution for the Upsilon(3S)->Upsilon(1S)pi pi transition and obtain good descriptions of the dynamics of the decay using the most general decay amplitude allowed by partial conservation of the axial-vector current considerations. The fits further indicate that the Upsilon(2S)->Upsilon(1S)pi pi and Upsilon(3S)->Upsilon(2S)pi pi transitions also show the presence of terms in the decay amplitude that were previously ignored, although at a relatively suppressed level.
