The triple sequentially fused pentagons (TSFP) motif is one of the basic subunits that could be used for constructing fullerenes, but it violates the isolated pentagon rule (IPR) and has not been found in carbon cages to date. The properties of TSFP-incorporating fullerenes are thus poorly explored both theoretically and experimentally. Reported herein are four chlorinated derivatives of three different fullerene cages, all with the TSFP motif. X-ray crystallographic analyses indicate that the molecular strain inherent to the pentagon adjacency of a TSFP is significantly relieved upon exohedral chlorination, leaving one of the four pentagon fusion sites unsaturated and rendering the present derivatives chiral. This unique reactivity, in stark contrast to that of previously reported non-IPR fullerenes containing double fused pentagons or triple directly fused pentagons, can be rationalized by density functional theory calculations, and are expected to stimulate further studies of these new members of the fullerene family, both theoretically and experimentally. SuperPower has successfully transferred from low throughput IBAD (ion beam assisted deposition) YSZ technology to high throughput IBAD MgO technology. Pilot-scale IBAD system and pilot-scale epi-buffer deposition system, each with capabilities of producing single-piece lengths over 1000 m have been established. Helix tape handling approach instead of wide tape approach is chosen due to its immense advantages over wide tape approach. High-performance IBAD MgO buffer stack and their processes have been developed together with high throughput where each layer in the buffer stack is processed at 40 m/h tape speed or higher during our Phase I scale up. Both pilot systems are in routine production mode since March 2006. More than 14 km IBAD MgO buffer tapes of 12 mm width were produced for Albany cable project. 700–800 m IBAD MgO tape per run is routinely produced in pilot IBAD system with single piece tape length ∼570 m. 400–550 m epi-buffer tape per run is routinely produced in pilot buffer system. High throughput IBAD MgO buffer gives better texture of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) film compared with IBAD YSZ, and superior superconducting properties. A high critical current of 557 A/cm in short tapes and a world record critical current × length value of > 70, 000 A - m were obtained with the high throughput IBAD MgO buffers. The title compound, [CuI(C11H10N2S2)] n, is built around centrosymmetric dinuclear Cu2I2 cores, each of which is linked to four neighboring Cu2I2 units via flexible dithioether ligands, viz. 4,4′-(methylenedithio)dipyridine, to form a two-dimensional grid containing rhombus-shaped cavities with diagonal distances of ca 15 and 22 Å. Two of these networks interpenetrate in a woven fashion, and the resulting structure does not possess any open channels or cavities. Each of the six Br atoms in the title compound, C15H12Br6, connects to an α-C atom; a pair of adjacent Br atoms connecting to the same five-membered ring extends to one side of the molecular framework and the other two pairs to the other side. The article reports on the results of a study of carbon dots for multiphoton bioimaging. A description of the experimental set up and measurement method is given. The study showed that carbon dots are strongly two-photon active, with the pulsed laser excitation in the near-infrared to result in bright luminescence in the visible.
