Ground-level ozone (O 3 ) concentrations and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition rates have increased strongly since the 1950s. Rising ground-level O 3 concentrations and atmospheric N deposition both affect plant physiology and growth, however, impacts have often been studied in isolation rather than in combination. In addition, studies are often limited to a control treatment and one or two elevated levels of ozone and/or nitrogen supply. In the current study, three-year old Betula pendula saplings were exposed to seven different O 3 profiles (24h mean O 3 concentration of 36-68ppb in 2013, with peaks up to an average of 105ppb) in precision-controlled hemispherical glasshouses (solardomes) and four different N loads (10, 30, 50 or 70kgNha -1 y -1 ) in 2012 and 2013. Here we report on the effects of enhanced O 3 concentrations and N load on leaf traits and gas exchange in leaves of varying age and developmental stage in 2013. The response of leaf traits to O 3 (but not N) vary with leaf developmental stage. For example, elevated O 3 did not affect the chlorophyll content of the youngest fully expanded leaf, but it reduced the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters in aging leaves, relatively more so later than earlier in the growing season. Elevated O 3 enhanced the N content of senesced leaves prior to leaf fall, potentially affecting subsequent N cycling in the soil. Enhanced N generally stimulated the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic capacity. Whilst elevated O 3 reduced the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis (A sat ) in aging leaves, it did not affect stomatal conductance (g s ). This suggests that photosynthesis and g s are not closely coupled at elevated O 3 under-light saturating conditions. We did not observe any interactions between O 3 and N regarding photosynthetic parameters (V c,max , J max , A sat ), chlorophyll content, g s , N content in senesced leaves and leaf number. The sensitivity of photosynthesis to temperature has been identified as a key uncertainty for projecting the magnitude of the terrestrial carbon cycle response to future climate change. Although thermal acclimation of photosynthesis under rising temperature has been reported in many tree species, whether tropospheric ozone (O3) affects the acclimation capacity remains unknown. In this study, temperature responses of photosynthesis (light‐saturated rate of photosynthesis (Asat), maximum rates of RuBP carboxylation (Vcmax), and electron transport (Jmax) and dark respiration (Rdark) of Populus tremula exposed to ambient O3 (AO3, maximum of 30 ppb) or elevated O3 (EO3, maximum of 110 ppb) and ambient or elevated temperature (ambient +5°C) were investigated in solardomes. We found that the optimum temperature of Asat (ToptA) significantly increased in response to warming. However, the thermal acclimation capacity was reduced by O3 exposure, as indicated by decreased ToptA, and temperature optima of Vcmax (ToptV) and Jmax (ToptJ) under EO3. Changes in both stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic capacity (Vcmax and Jmax) contributed to the shift of ToptA by warming and EO3. Neither Rdark measured at 25°C (Rdark25) nor the temperature response of Rdark was affected by warming, EO3, or their combination. The responses of Asat, Vcmax, and Jmax to warming and EO3 were closely correlated with changes in leaf nitrogen (N) content and N use efficiency. Overall, warming stimulated growth (leaf biomass and tree height), whereas EO3 reduced growth (leaf and woody biomass). Northern, Southern and Equatorial Africa have been identified as among the regions most at risk from very high ozone concentrations. Whereas we know that many crop cultivars from Europe, north America and Asia are sensitive to ozone, almost nothing is known about the sensitivity of staple food crops in Africa to the pollutant. In this study cultivars of the African staple food crops, Triticum aestivum (wheat), Eleusine coracana (finger millet), Pennisetum glaucum (pearl millet) and Phaseolus vulgaris (bean) were exposed to an episodic ozone regime in solardomes in order to assess whether African crops are sensitive to ozone pollution. Extensive visible leaf injury due to ozone was shown for many cultivars, indicating high sensitivity to ozone. Reductions in total yield and 1,000‐grain weight were found for T. aestivum and P. vulgaris, whereas there was no effect on yield for E. coracana and P. glaucum. There were differences in sensitivity to ozone for different cultivars of an individual crop, indicating that there could be possibilities for either cultivar selection or selective crop breeding to reduce sensitivity of these crops to ozone. Abstract: Introduction of high‐performing crop cultivars and crop/soil water management practices that increase the stomatal uptake of carbon dioxide and photosynthesis will be instrumental in realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of achieving food security. To date, however, global assessments of how to increase crop yield have failed to consider the negative effects of tropospheric ozone, a gaseous pollutant that enters the leaf stomatal pores of plants along with carbon dioxide, and is increasing in concentration globally, particularly in rapidly developing countries. Earlier studies have simply estimated that the largest effects are in the areas with the highest ozone concentrations. Using a modelling method that accounts for the effects of soil moisture deficit and meteorological factors on the stomatal uptake of ozone, we show for the first time that ozone impacts on wheat yield are particularly large in humid rain‐fed and irrigated areas of major wheat‐producing countries (e.g. United States, France, India, China and Russia). Averaged over 2010–2012, we estimate that ozone reduces wheat yields by a mean 9.9% in the northern hemisphere and 6.2% in the southern hemisphere, corresponding to some 85 Tg (million tonnes) of lost grain. Total production losses in developing countries receiving Official Development Assistance are 50% higher than those in developed countries, potentially reducing the possibility of achieving UN SDG2. Crucially, our analysis shows that ozone could reduce the potential yield benefits of increasing irrigation usage in response to climate change because added irrigation increases the uptake and subsequent negative effects of the pollutant. We show that mitigation of air pollution in a changing climate could play a vital role in achieving the above‐mentioned UN SDG, while also contributing to other SDGs related to human health and well‐being, ecosystems and climate change. Four genotypes of snap bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were selected to study the effects of ambient ozone concentration at a cropland area around Beijing by using 450 ppm of ethylenediurea (EDU) as a chemical protectant. During the growing season, the 8 h (9:00–17:00) average ozone concentration was very high, approximately 71.3 ppb, and AOT40 was 29.0 ppm.h. All genotypes showed foliar injury, but ozone-sensitive genotypes exhibited much more injury than ozone-tolerant ones. Compared with control, EDU significantly alleviated foliar injury, increased photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll a fluorescence, Vc max and J max , and seed and pod weights in ozone-sensitive genotypes but not in ozone-tolerant genotypes. EDU did not significantly affect antioxidant contents in any of the genotypes. Therefore, EDU effectively protected sensitive genotypes from ambient ozone damage, while protection on ozone-tolerant genotypes was limited. Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution is known to adversely affect the production of O3-sensitive crops such as wheat. The magnitude of impact is dependent on the accumulated stomatal flux of O3 into the leaves. In well-irrigated plants, the leaf pores (stomata) tend to be wide open, which stimulates the stomatal flux and therefore the adverse impact of O3 on yield. To test whether reduced irrigation might mitigate O3 impacts on flag leaf photosynthesis and yield parameters, we exposed an O3-sensitive Kenyan wheat variety to peak concentrations of 30 and 80 ppb O3 for four weeks in solardomes and applied three irrigation regimes (well-watered, frequent deficit, and infrequent deficit irrigation) during the flowering and grain filling stage. Reduced irrigation stimulated 1000-grain weight and harvest index by 33% and 13%, respectively (when O3 treatments were pooled), which compensated for the O3-induced reductions observed in well-watered plants. Whilst full irrigation accelerated the O3-induced reduction in photosynthesis by a week, such an effect was not observed for the chlorophyll content index of the flag leaf. Further studies under field conditions are required to test whether reduced irrigation can be applied as a management tool to mitigate adverse impacts of O3 on wheat yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimating food production under future air pollution and climate conditions in scenario analysis depends on accurately modelling ozone (O3) effects on yield. This study tests several assumptions that form part of published approaches for modelling O3 effects on photosynthesis and leaf duration against experimental data. In 2015 and 2016, two wheat cultivars were exposed in eight hemispherical glasshouses to O3 ranging from 22 to 57 ppb (24 h mean), with profiles ranging from raised background to high peak treatments. The stomatal O3 flux (Phytotoxic Ozone Dose, POD) to leaves was simulated using a multiplicative stomatal conductance model. Leaf senescence occurred earlier as average POD increased according to a linear relationship, and the two cultivars showed very different senescence responses. Negative effects of O3 on photosynthesis were only observed alongside O3-induced leaf senescence, suggesting that O3 does not impair photosynthesis in un-senesced flag leaves at the realistic O3 concentrations applied here. Accelerated senescence is therefore likely to be the dominant O3 effect influencing yield in most agricultural environments. POD was better than 24 h mean concentration and AOT40 (accumulated O3 exceeding 40 ppb, daylight hours) at predicting physiological response to O3, and flux also accounted for the difference in exposure resulting from peak and high background treatments. • Increased temperature improved plant growth and photosynthetic carbon fixation. • O 3 inhibited growth, and Quercus mongolica has a self-repair ability to O 3 stress. • The adverse effects of O 3 on growth and C fixation were mitigated by air warming. • Urban trees show a species-specific difference in plant functional traits. With continuous urbanization and climate warming, increased air temperature and elevated ozone (O 3) concentration often co-occur in many urban areas, but we still lack information about the interactive effects of warming and elevated O 3 on urban trees. In the present experiment, the single and combined effects of increased air temperature (IT, ambient air temperature + 2 °C) and elevated O 3 (EO, ambient air O 3 concentrations + 80 ppb) on carbon (C) fixation and allocation in Quercus mongolica and Pinus tabuliformis, which are widely used as street tree species in urban areas of China, were investigated over two consecutive growing seasons by using 13C isotope techniques. The results showed that IT increased biomass, photosynthetic gas exchange parameters and total 13C content of both tree species. Compared to ambient temperature, IT significantly increased the total 13C content labelled by 56.6 % in Q. mongolica and by 31.2 % in P. tabuliformis in 2021. Elevated O 3 induced a decrease in biomass and net photosynthetic rate (P n) in both tree species. Compared to ambient O 3, elevated O 3 significantly decreased P n by 52.6 % in Q. mongolica and by 37.4 % in P. tabuliformis in 2020. The treatment EO decreased 13C allocation to roots but increased 13C content and distribution in leaves in Q. mongolica. These findings demonstrated that EO inhibited the growth and photosynthesis of the two tree species. Our results showed that Q. mongolica was more sensitive to IT and EO than P. tabuliformis , but the former has a self-repair mechanism under increased O 3 stress as it is able to invest more carbon to repair leaf damage to a certain extent. Our study also found that the total biomass, relative growth rate, P n and total 13C content remained higher under the combination of IT and EO compared to EO alone, suggesting that moderate warming may mitigate the negative effects of elevated O 3 stress to some extent.
