In severely phosphorus (P)-impoverished environments, plants have evolved to use P very efficiently. Yet, it is unclear how P allocation in leaves contributes to their photosynthetic P-use efficiency (PPUE) and position along the leaf economics spectrum (LES). We address this question in 10 species of Banksia and Hakea, two highly P-efficient Proteaceae genera. We characterised traits in leaves of Banksia and Hakea associated with the LES: leaf mass per area, light-saturated photosynthetic rates, P and nitrogen concentrations, and PPUE. We also determined leaf P partitioning to five biochemical fractions (lipid, nucleic acid, metabolite, inorganic and residual P) and their possible association with the LES. For both genera, PPUE was negatively correlated with fractional allocation of P to lipids, but positively correlated with that to metabolites. For Banksia only, PPUE was negatively correlated with residual P, highlighting a strategy contrasting to that of Hakea. Phosphorus-allocation patterns significantly explained PPUE but were not linked to the resource acquisition vs resource conservation gradient defined by the LES. We conclude that distinct P-allocation patterns enable species from different genera to achieve high PPUE and discuss the implications of different P investments. The alternative oxidase (AOX) is a cyanide-resistant oxidase that provides an alternative outlet for electrons from the respiratory electron transport chain embedded in the inner membrane of plant mitochondria. Examination of soybean (Glycine max) plants carrying a GmAOX2b antisense gene showed AOX to have a central role in reproductive development and fecundity. In three independently transformed antisense lines, seed set was reduced by 16% to 43%, whereas ovule abortion increased by 1.2- to 1.7-fold when compared with nontransgenic transformation control plants. Reduced fecundity was associated with reductions in whole leaf cyanide-resistant, salicylhydroxamic acid-sensitive respiration and net photosynthesis, but there was no change in total respiration in the dark. The frequency of potential fertilization events was reduced by at least one-third in the antisense plants as a likely consequence of prefertilization defects. Pistils of the antisense plants contained a higher proportion of immature-sized, nonfertile embryo sacs compared with nontransgenic control plants. Increased rates of pollen abortion in vivo and reduced rates of pollen germination in vitro suggested that the antisense gene compromised pollen development and function. Reciprocal crosses between antisense and nontransgenic plants revealed that pollen produced by antisense plants was less active in fertilization. Taken together, the results presented here indicate that AOX expression has an important role in determining normal gametophyte development and function.

The effect of water stress on respiration and mitochondrial electron transport has been studied in soybean (Glycine max) leaves, using the oxygen-isotope-fractionation technique. Treatments with three levels of water stress were applied by irrigation to replace 100%, 50%, and 0% of daily water use by transpiration. The levels of water stress were characterized in terms of light-saturated stomatal conductance (gs): well irrigated (gs » 0.2 mol H2O m-2 s-1), mildly water stressed (gs between 0.1 and 0.2 mol H2O m-2 s-1), and severely water stressed (gs « 0.1 mol H2O m-2 s-1). Although net photosynthesis decreased by 40% and 70% under mild and severe water stress, respectively, the total respiratory oxygen uptake (Vt) was not significantly different at any water-stress level. However, severe water stress caused a significant shift of electrons from the cytochrome to the alternative pathway. The electron partitioning through the alternative pathway increased from 10% to 12% under well-watered or mild water-stress conditions to near 40% under severe water stress. Consequently, the calculated rate of mitochondrial ATP synthesis decreased by 32% under severe water stress. Unlike many other stresses, water stress did not affect the levels of mitochondrial alternative oxidase protein. • Leaf mass-based photosynthetic rate was more enhanced in evergreen trees with eCO2. • Branch hydraulic efficiency was more enhanced in deciduous trees with eCO2. • eCO2 strengthens the coordination of stem hydraulics with leaf gas exchange. Elevated CO 2 concentration (eCO 2) in the atmosphere is expected to impact plant water relations and growth in several ecosystems across the globe. However, we still know little about such impact on tree species in subtropical regions. The present study investigated the impact of eCO 2 on leaf gas exchange, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, leaf and stem hydraulic conductivity, and growth of seedlings of four evergreen and four deciduous tree species from a subtropical forest in Southwest China. We found that both evergreen and deciduous tree species at eCO 2 had higher leaf area-based photosynthetic rates and lower leaf stomatal conductance. Further, leaf mass-based photosynthetic rate was more enhanced in evergreen than in deciduous trees at eCO 2. Biomass of evergreen and deciduous species was significantly higher at eCO 2 , with large species-specific variation among the evergreen species. Leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity was more enhanced in deciduous tree species than that of evergreen tree species with eCO 2 , which was mainly driven by the increase of biomass at eCO 2. Interestingly, eCO 2 significantly strengthened the coordination of stem hydraulic conductivity with leaf-gas exchange, leaf phosphorus concentration, and plant biomass across evergreen and deciduous species. These results highlighted greater enhancement of photosynthesis and greater species-specific variation in biomass at eCO 2 for evergreen species compared to deciduous species, and stronger hydraulic-photosynthesis correlations at eCO 2 than at aCO 2 for tree species from subtropical forests. The present study provides important insights on the potential impacts of eCO 2 on plant eco-physiology, growth and forest succession in a subtropical forest under global climate change.
