Abstract

We present a flexible method that can calculate Bloch modes, complex band structures, and impedances of two-dimensional photonic crystals from scattering data produced by widely available numerical tools. The method generalizes previous work which relied on specialized multipole and finite element method (FEM) techniques underpinning transfer matrix methods. We describe the numerical technique for mode extraction, and apply it to calculate a complex band structure and to design two photonic crystal antireflection coatings. We do this for frequencies at which other methods fail, but which nevertheless are of significant practical interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: A three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) for the analysis of plane wave diffraction by a bi-periodic slab is described and implemented. A scattering matrix formalism based on the FEM allows the efficient treatment of light reflection and transmission by multilayer bi-periodic structures, and the computation of Bloch modes of three-dimensional arrays. Abstract

We present a semi-analytical method for the computation and analysis of localised resonant states with frequencies close to photonic crystal band edges. The method results in a differential equation for the envelope function of the confined state that is readily solved to determine good approximations to both frequencies and fields. We examine the formation and evolution of confined states near the band-edge for both cavities and waveguides in photonic crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
