The low throughput of atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the main drawback in its large-scale deployment in industrial metrology. A promising solution would be based on the parallelization of the scanning probe system, allowing acquisition of the image by an array of probes operating simultaneously. A key step for reaching this goal relies on the miniaturization and integration of the sensing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate AFM imaging employing an on-chip displacement sensor, based on a photonic crystal cavity, combined with an integrated photodetector and coupled to an on-chip waveguide. This fully-integrated sensor allows high-sensitivity and high-resolution in a very small footprint and its readout is compatible with current commercial AFM systems.

We propose a force sensor, with optical detection, based on a reconfigurable multicavity photonic molecule distributed over two parallel photonic crystal membranes. The system spectral behaviour is described with an analytical model based on coupled mode theory and validated by finite difference time domain simulations. The deformation of the upper photonic crystal membrane, due to a localized vertical force, is monitored by the relative spectral positions of the photonic molecule resonances. The proposed system can act both as force sensor, with pico-newton sensitivity, able to identify the position where the force is applied, and as torque sensor able to measure the torsion of the membrane along two perpendicular directions.

We developed a method to easily transfer optical structures from a semiconductor substrate to a fiber-tip facet without the need for glues and preserving the pristine or functionalized condition of the structure surface. An opening is etched on the back of the fabrication wafer and the structure is suspended via breakable support. The transfer is achieved by mechanical contact with the fiber facet. Using a photonic crystal structure designed for high vertical coupling at the Gamma point a reflectance fiber-tip sensor with refractive index sensitivity of 120 nm/RIU has been assembled and could be further functionalized for application in biosensing.

We present an efficient and flexible method to realize micro- and nano-optical structures on the tip of optical fibers. We demonstrate this approach for a fiber-tip sensor consisting of a photonic crystal (PhC) structure in a semiconductor membrane on the cleaved facet of a telecom fiber. The PhC structure is fabricated on a wafer by lithography and etching and then transferred to the fiber facet by a simple mechanical pickup process through an opening in the substrate, without the need for adhesives or a micromanipulator. Due to its reliability, scalability, and the use of wafer-scale fabrication methods, this process increases the possibilities for fiber-tip applications at the industrial level. With the fabricated fiber tip sensors, we demonstrate sensing of the refractive index and temperature, with resonance wavelength shifts of 120 nm/RIU and 95 pm/K, respectively.

Recent theories proposed a deep revision of the well-known expression for the Purcell factor, with counterintuitive effects, such as complex modal volumes and non-Lorentzian local density of states. We experimentally demonstrate these predictions in tailored coupled cavities on photonic crystal slabs with relatively low optical losses. Near-field hyperspectral imaging of quantum dot photoluminescence is proved to be a direct tool for measuring the line shape of the local density of states. The experimental results clearly evidence non-Lorentzian character, in perfect agreement with numerical and theoretical predictions. Spatial maps with deep subwavelength resolution of the real and imaginary parts of the complex mode volumes are presented. The generality of these results is confirmed by an additional set of far-field and time-resolved experiments in cavities with larger modal volume and higher quality factors.

Quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPICs) on a GaAs platform allow the generation, manipulation, routing, and detection of non-classical states of light, which could pave the way for quantum information processing based on photons. In this article, the prototype of a multi-functional QPIC is presented together with our recent achievements in terms of nanofabrication and integration of each component of the circuit. Photons are generated by excited InAs quantum dots (QDs) and routed through ridge waveguides towards photonic crystal cavities acting as filters. The filters with a transmission of 20% and free spectral range ≥66 nm are able to select a single excitonic line out of the complex emission spectra of the QDs. The QD luminescence can be measured by on-chip superconducting single photon detectors made of niobium nitride (NbN) nanowires patterned on top of a suspended nanobeam, reaching a device quantum efficiency up to 28%. Moreover, two electrically independent detectors are integrated on top of the same nanobeam, resulting in a very compact autocorrelator for on-chip g(2)(τ) measurements.

Quantum dots (QDs) interacting with confined light fields in photonic crystal cavities represent a scalable light source for the generation of single photons and laser radiation in the solid-state platform. The complete control of light-matter interaction in these sources is needed to fully exploit their potential, but it has been challenging due to the small length scales involved. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the control of the radiative interaction between InAs QDs and one mode of three coupled nanocavities. By non-locally moulding the mode field experienced by the QDs inside one of the cavities, we are able to deterministically tune, and even inhibit, the spontaneous emission into the mode. The presented method will enable the real-time switching of Rabi oscillations, the shaping of the temporal waveform of single photons, and the implementation of unexplored nanolaser modulation schemes.

Actively controlling the properties of localized optical modes is crucial for cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. While several methods to tune the optical frequency have been demonstrated, the possibility of controlling the shape of the modes has scarcely been investigated. Yet an active manipulation of the mode pattern would allow direct control of the mode volume and the quality factor and therefore of the radiative processes. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a nano-optoelectromechanical device in which a mechanical displacement affects the spatial pattern of the electromagnetic field. The device is based on a double-membrane photonic crystal waveguide which, upon bending, creates a spatial modulation of the effective refractive index, resulting in an effective potential well or antiwell for the optical modes. The change in the field pattern drastically affects the optical losses: large modulations of the quality factors and dissipative coupling rates larger than 1 GHz/nm are predicted by calculations and confirmed by experiments. This concept opens new avenues in solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics in which the field, instead of the frequency, is coupled to the mechanical motion.

Displacement sensing at the nanoscale is required in many applications, including accelerometry, mass sensing and atomic force microscopy. Miniaturization of the sensing elements and integration of the read-out is key in achieving low cost, high resolution and high speed. Here, we present a novel integrated nano-opto-electro-mechanical device which potentially has subnanometer resolution for displacement sensing. The proposed device is a waveguide-coupled, micron-sized, double membrane photonic crystal cavity with integrated electro-optical read-out on a single chip.

Disordered photonic materials can diffuse and localize light through random multiple scattering, offering opportunities to study mesoscopic phenomena, control light-matter interactions, and provide new strategies for photonic applications. Light transport in such media is governed by photonic modes characterized by resonances with finite spectral width and spatial extent. Considerable steps have been made recently towards control over the transport using wavefront shaping techniques. The selective engineering of individual modes, however, has been addressed only theoretically. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the possibility to engineer the confinement and the mutual interaction of modes in a two-dimensional disordered photonic structure. The strong light confinement is achieved at the fabrication stage by an optimization of the structure, and an accurate and local tuning of the mode resonance frequencies is achieved via post-fabrication processes. To show the versatility of our technique, we selectively control the detuning between overlapping localized modes and observe both frequency crossing and anti-crossing behaviours, thereby paving the way for the creation of open transmission channels in strongly scattering media.

Summary form only given. Pure and deterministic single-photon sources, obtained by coupling a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) to a photonic crystal (PhC) cavity, constitute a key component for quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPICs) [1]. These sources are commonly excited by a laser pump, which involves some practical limitations in scaling the number of integrated cavity-emitter nodes and is hardly compatible with on-chip single-photon detectors. Here, we present the first demonstration of electrical injection of single dot lines coupled to photonic crystal modes. The latter can be electrically re-configured to bring multiple cavity-emitters into energy resonance.

A single quantum dot deterministically coupled to a photonic crystal environment constitutes an indispensable elementary unit to both generate and manipulate single-photons in next-generation quantum photonic circuits. To date, the scaling of the number of these quantum nodes on a fully integrated chip has been prevented by the use of optical pumping strategies that require a bulky off-chip laser along with the lack of methods to control the energies of nano-cavities and emitters. Here, we concurrently overcome these limitations by demonstrating electrical injection of single excitonic lines within a nano-electro-mechanically tuneable photonic crystal cavity. When an electrically driven dot line is brought into resonance with a photonic crystal mode, its emission rate is enhanced. Anti-bunching experiments reveal the quantum nature of these on-demand sources emitting in the telecom range. These results represent an important step forward in the realization of integrated quantum optics experiments featuring multiple electrically triggered Purcell-enhanced single-photon sources embedded in a reconfigurable semiconductor architecture.

We employed the contact forces induced by a near-field tip to tune and probe the optical resonances of a mechanically compliant photonic crystal molecule. Here, the pressure induced by the near-field tip is exploited to control the spectral proprieties of the coupled cavities in an ultrawide spectral range, demonstrating a reversible mode shift of $37.5\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$. Besides, by monitoring the coupling strength variation due to the vertical nanodeformation of the dielectric structure, distinct tip-sample interaction regimes have been unambiguously reconstructed with a nano-Newton sensitivity. These results demonstrate an optical method for mapping mechanical forces at the nanoscale with a lateral spatial resolution below 100 nm.

A photonic crystal three missing holes nanocavity, having only a few modes, is coupled to a 60 missing holes long multimode cavity, both fabricated in the same InGaAsP membrane. The coupling was studied in detail by the photothermal tuning of the small cavity over about three free spectral ranges of the large cavity. Strong coupling effects, involving at least three large cavity modes simultaneously, were observed from level anticrossing data. The observations are excellently reproduced by a model of coupled Fabry Perot resonators.

A local tuning of the modes of photonic crystal systems both to blue and to red sides of the resonance is implemented by nano-infiltration/evaporation of water and laser micro-oxidation. This technology is used to completely control coupled photonic nanocavities (photonic crystal molecules). Beside the standard condition of zero detuning between identical modes of the two cavities (homoatomic molecule), we are also able to produce coupling between two modes of different polarization and spatial distribution (heteroatomic molecule). The insertion of a metal-coated tip on the surface of a photonic crystal microcavity is used for simultaneous near field imaging of electric and magnetic fields in photonic crystal nanocavities, via the radiative emission of embedded semiconductor quantum dots (QD). The photoluminescence intensity map directly gives the electric field distribution, to which the electric dipole of the QD is coupled. The magnetic field generates, via Faraday's law, a circular current in the apex of the metallized probe that can be schematized as a ring. The resulting magnetic perturbation of the photonic modes induces a blue shift, which can be used to map the magnetic field, within a single near-field scan. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We demonstrate the independent lithographic mode tuning by changing the holes around the defect area of photonic crystal nanocavities containing light-emitting quantum dots. The data have been verified by the three-dimensional finite-difference time domain simulation. These findings can be applied to realize encoded particles with large coding capability (>105) for biosensing.

A method to avoid the stiction failure in nano-electro-opto-mechanical systems has been demonstrated by coating the system with an anti-stiction layer of Al2O3 grown by atomic layer deposition techniques. The device based on a double-membrane photonic crystal cavity can be reversibly operated from the pull-in back to its release status. This enables to electrically switch the wavelength of a mode over ~50 nm with a potential modulation frequency above 2 MHz. These results pave the way to reliable nano-mechanical sensors and optical switches.

Optical waveguides based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and fabricated in CMOS compatible technology will likely replace electrical interconnects for high data rate circuits. In this context, a modulator based on a silicon-waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is very promising [2]. However, the requirement of producing a π phase shift in one arm of the MZI implies a millimeter scale footprint of the device, which is a serious disadvantage for integration in micro-processors. Therefore, strong efforts are made to miniaturize MZI modulators without compromising the required phase shift, particularly using slow light engineering in photonic crystals (PhCs). Here, we demonstrate a different concept for a compact MZI built from a PhC operating in the special regime of self-collimation of light. To reach this regime, we have tailored the photonic band structure such as to produce self-collimated beams. The properties of these beams are such that we can manipulate them to form the arms of the MZI in a very small area of 20×20 μm2.

In this work we present a sizeable and reversible spectral tuning of the resonances of a two-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity by exploiting the introduction of a sub-wavelength size glass tip. The comparison between experimental near-field data and results of numerical calculations shows that the spectral shift induced by the tip is proportional to the local electric field intensity of the cavity mode. This observation proves that the electromagnetic local density of states in a microcavity can be directly measured by mapping the tip-induced spectral shift with a scanning near-field optical microscope. Moreover, a non-linear control on the cavity resonance is obtained by exploiting the local heating induced by near-field laser excitation at different excitation powers. The temperature gradient due to the optical absorption results in an index of refraction gradient which modifies the dielectric surroundings of the cavity and shifts the optical modes. The photonic properties of two classes of wavelength-sized cavities are reported for deeply etched InP/InGaAsP/InP planar photonic crystals. The high aspect, deeply etched structures are studied as potential building blocks for nonmembrane type photonic devices in standard InP photonic integrated circuits. The first class consists of cavities of one unit cell in one direction and varying size in the other planar direction. The studied class includes a Fabry-Perot type cavity with one row of missing holes, a simple single missing hole defect cavity, and a cavity consisting of two holes which have been slightly shifted and reduced in hole radius. The best observed quality factor of 65 in this class is obtained for a single hole defect cavity. The second class is comprised of cavities which are derived from a three missing row defect in one direction and varying size in the other direction. This includes a Fabry-Perot type cavity with three rows of missing holes, a point defect cavity consisting of seven unetched holes and a six hole ring cavity. The best observed quality factor of 300 is obtained for the ring cavity in this second class of structures, which is adequate for applications. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

We report a novel, fully-integrated nanophotonic wavelength and displacement sensor based on an electrostatically-actuated double-membrane photonic crystal nanocavity detector with a quantum dot absorption region.

We present the design, fabrication and characterization of double-membrane photonic crystal cavities electromechanically tunable over >10 nm, and their application in integrated quantum photonics.

Measuring resonant wavelengths of different modes of a luminescent semiconductor photonic crystal cavity placed on the tip of an optical fiber is proposed and demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters, and is applied to the measurement of temperature and refractive index in the temperature range of 77-370 K. The operation principle is supported by the finite-element method simulations. The robustness of a simple mounting scheme without adhesives is proven experimentally. The simplicity, extremely small size, and high sensitivity to both refractive index and temperature makes this concept an ideal fiber-optic sensor for a multitude of applications.

Tailoring the electromagnetic field at the nanoscale has led to artificial materials exhibiting fascinating optical properties unavailable in naturally occurring substances. Besides having fundamental implications for classical and quantum optics, nanoscale metamaterials provide a platform for developing disruptive novel technologies, in which a combination of both the electric and magnetic radiation field components at optical frequencies is relevant to engineer the light-matter interaction. Thus, an experimental investigation of the spatial distribution of the photonic states at the nanoscale for both field components is of crucial importance. Here we experimentally demonstrate a concomitant deep-subwavelength near-field imaging of the electric and magnetic intensities of the optical modes localized in a photonic crystal nanocavity. We take advantage of the “campanile tip”, a plasmonic near-field probe that efficiently combines broadband field enhancement with strong far-field to near-field coupling. By exploiting the electric and magnetic polarizability components of the campanile tip along with the perturbation imaging method, we are able to map in a single measurement both the electric and magnetic localized near-field distributions.

Arrays of photonic cavities are relevant structures for developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits and for investigating basic quantum electrodynamics phenomena due to the photon hopping between interacting nanoresonators. Here we investigate, by means of scanning near-field spectroscopy, numerical calculations and an analytical model, the role of different neighboring interactions that give rise to delocalized supermodes in different photonic crystal array configurations. The systems under investigation consist of three nominally identical two-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavities on membrane aligned along the two symmetry axes of the triangular photonic crystal lattice. We find that the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor coupling terms can be of the same relevance. In this case, a nonintuitive picture describes the resonant modes, and the photon hopping between adjacent nanoresonators is strongly affected. Our findings prove that exotic configurations and even postfabrication engineering of coupled nanoresonators could directly tailor the mode spatial distribution and the group velocity in coupled resonator optical waveguides.

The operation of a luminescent semiconductor photonic crystal cavity on an optical fiber tip is demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of temperature and refractive index by measuring the wavelength-shifts of two different cavity modes. © OSA 2015.

The mobile nature of fluids is fully exploited in planar photonic crystals to not only tune and reconfigure in situ optical microcavities, in a continuous and reversible manner, but also to create "a posteriori" spatially programmable cavities. Both the amount of liquid and the location of the selectively infiltrated area can be accurately controlled either mechanically, using a microfiber manipulator, or optically, using a laser-controlled evaporation and recondensation scheme. The wide applicability is illustrated by tuning a cavity resonance over 50¿nm, adjusting the frequency splitting of an originally degenerate cavity mode, and by freely moving a liquid-induced cavity through dragging a microdroplet.

We report the all-electrical control over cavity-emitter systems, consisting in Stark-tunable quantum dots embedded in mechanically reconfigurable photonic crystal membranes. Purcell-effect from a single dot is demonstrated at distinct wavelengths.

We report the full energy control over a semiconductor cavity-emitter system, consisting of single Stark-tunable quantum dots embedded in mechanically reconfigurable photonic crystal membranes. A reversible wavelength tuning of the emitter over 7.5 nm as well as an 8.5 nm mode shift are realized on the same device. Harnessing these two electrical tuning mechanisms, a single exciton transition is brought on resonance with the cavity mode at several wavelengths, demonstrating a ten-fold enhancement of its spontaneous emission. These results open the way to bring several cavity-enhanced emitters mutually into resonance and therefore represent a key step towards scalable quantum photonic circuits featuring multiple sources of indistinguishable single photons.

Photonic and plasmonic devices rely on nanoscale control of the local density of optical states (LDOS) in dielectric and metallic environments. The tremendous progress in designing and tailoring the electric LDOS of nano-resonators requires an investigation tool that is able to access the detailed features of the optical localized resonant modes with deep-subwavelength spatial resolution. This scenario has motivated the development of different nanoscale imaging techniques. Here, we prove that a technique involving the combination of scanning near-field optical microscopy with resonant scattering spectroscopy enables imaging the electric LDOS in nano-resonators with outstanding spatial resolution (λ/19) by means of a pure optical method based on light scattering. Using this technique, we investigate the properties of photonic crystal nanocavities, demonstrating that the resonant modes appear as characteristic Fano line shapes, which arise from interference. Therefore, by monitoring the spatial variation of the Fano line shape, we locally measure the phase modulation of the resonant modes without the need of external heterodyne detection. This novel, deep-subwavelength imaging method allows us to access both the intensity and the phase modulation of localized electric fields. Finally, this technique could be implemented on any type of platform, being particularly appealing for those based on non-optically active material, such as silicon, glass, polymers, or metals. A purely optical method for realizing ultra-subwavelength phase-sensitive imaging of localized photonic modes has been developed. The technique combines scanning near-field optical microscopy with resonance scattering spectroscopy and involves monitoring the spatial variation of the Fano resonance line shape in photonic-crystal nanocavities. Using the technique, Niccolo Caselli and co-workers in Italy, the USA, the UK, and the Netherlands realized a spatial resolution of λ/19 (where λ is the wavelength) for the electric local density of optical states (LDOS). The technique can be applied to resonators made from any kind of material and over a wide spectral range. Furthermore, it does not suffer from bleaching or tip-induced perturbation. This demonstration opens up new strategies for investigating the electric LDOS and phase distribution of modes in a wide range of nanophotonic and nanoplasmonic resonators.

Single excitons in semiconductor microcavities represent a solid state and scalable platform for cavity quantum electrodynamics, potentially enabling an interface between flying (photon) and static (exciton) quantum bits in future quantum networks. While both single-photon emission and the strong coupling regime have been demonstrated, further progress has been hampered by the inability to control the coherent evolution of the cavity quantum electrodynamics system in real time, as needed to produce and harness charge–photon entanglement. Here using the ultrafast electrical tuning of the exciton energy in a photonic crystal diode, we demonstrate the dynamic control of the coupling of a single exciton to a photonic crystal cavity mode on a sub-nanosecond timescale, faster than the natural lifetime of the exciton. This opens the way to the control of single-photon waveforms, as needed for quantum interfaces, and to the real-time control of solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics systems., Controlling the coherent evolution of cavity quantum electrodynamics systems is key for future quantum networks. Here Pagliano et al. demonstrate dynamic control of the coupling of a single exciton to a photonic micro-resonator using electrical tuning of the exciton energy in a photonic crystal cavity diode.

We report the control over the spontaneous emission of energy-tunable quantum emitters embedded in passive waveguide circuits, realized by coupling Stark-tunable quantum dots to electromechanically-compliant photonic crystal molecules.

Solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics systems will form scalable nodes of future quantum networks, allowing the storage, processing and retrieval of quantum bits, where a real-time control of the radiative interaction in the cavity is required to achieve high efficiency. We demonstrate here the dynamic molding of the vacuum field in a coupled-cavity system to achieve the ultrafast nonlocal modulation of spontaneous emission of quantum dots in photonic crystal cavities, on a timescale of ~200 ps, much faster than their natural radiative lifetimes. This opens the way to the ultrafast control of semiconductor-based cavity quantum electrodynamics systems for application in quantum interfaces and to a new class of ultrafast lasers based on nano-photonic cavities., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

We present the design, fabrication, and photoluminescence experiment of InGaAsP photonic crystal slot nanobeam slow light waveguides with embedded InAs quantum dots. The strong confinement of electric field in the slot region is confirmed by the measured record high sensitivity of 7×102 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) to the refractive index change of the environment. A cavity, formed by locally deflecting the two beams toward each other, gives an even higher sensitivity of about 9×102 nm/RIU.

We report direct evidence of enhanced spontaneous emission in a photonic crystal light-emitting diode (LED) at telecom wavelength (lambda similar to 1300 nm). This result is crucial to obtain an electrically driven single photon source with high extraction efficiency. This kind of devices can be used for different types of applications in emerging fields like quantum key distribution, quantum information technology as well as in fundamental studies on quantum electrodynamics. In this work we present a device which combines a photonic crystal nanocavity with InAs quantum dots (QDs) and an LED, leading to cavity-enhanced emission at telecom wavelengths under electrical injection. The fabrication process, based on e-beam lithography and additive and subtractive processes, is described in detail. A well-isolated emission peak at about 1300 nm from the PhC mode electrically pumped is obtained (Q similar to 4000), and the enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate (similar to 1.5 fold) is clearly evidenced by time-resolved electroluminescence measurements. We directly investigate, by means of near-field spectroscopy, the spatial distribution of the optical cavity modes of 2D photonic crystal microcavities. Numerical simulations confirm that the photoluminescence maps of quantum dots embedded in the photonic structure qualitatively match the spatial modulation of the electric field intensity. We discuss relevant design considerations for the fabrication of electromechanically tunable photonic crystal cavities based on double semiconductor slabs. A simple optical and electromechanical model of the device based on coupled-mode theory and electrostatics is discussed and used jointly with 3-D finite-element calculations of optical cavity modes to extract the tuning-range dependence on geometrical parameters. A design rule, which avoids the sticking of membranes due to capillary forces and keeps a large tunability, is defined. The details of the fabrication process and a summary of the experimental results on GaAs and InGaAsP/InP material systems are given. We also address the problem of nonsymmetric devices, where the thicknesses of the membranes are not exactly the same, resulting in an imbalanced power emission of coupled modes.

We report a study of single quantum dots inside photonic crystal cavities with a low-temperature scanning near-field optical microscope. The spatial maps of single excitonic lines from the quantum dot show the clear signature of coupling to the cavity modes for small detunings. We also show that the near-field tip can be used to control the exciton-photon coupling at the nanoscale. A general framework for the interpretation of near-field maps of single emitters in cavities is proposed.

We report the electromechanical control of spontaneous emission of single InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in wavelength-tunable double-membrane photonic crystal cavities (PCC). The tuning is achieved by modulating the distance between two parallel GaAs membranes by applying electrostatic forces across a p-i-n diode under reverse bias. The spontaneous emission rate of single dots has been modified by over a factor of ten, tuning the cavity reversibly between on- and offresonant conditions without altering the emission energy of the dots. We also discuss a possible approach to integrate the double membrane structure with ridge waveguides, for the transmission of light within a photonic chip.

We present the design, the fabrication and the characterization of a tunable one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal cavity (PCC) etched on two vertically-coupled GaAs nanobeams. A novel fabrication method which prevents their adhesion under capillary forces is introduced. We discuss a design to increase the flexibility of the structure and we demonstrate a large reversible and controllable electromechanical wavelength tuning (> 15 nm) of the cavity modes., 11 pages, 4 figures

Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities made in broadband luminescent material offer attractive possibilities for flexible active devices. The luminescence enables the cavity to operate as an autonomous entity. New applications of this property are demonstrated for cavities made in the InGaAsP underetched semiconductor membrane with embedded InAs Quantum Dots that emit in the range of 1400-1600 nm. Planar photonic crystal membrane nanocavities were released from the parent chip by mechanical nanomanipulation. The released cavity particle could be bonded on an arbitrary surface, which was exploited to make a novel fiber-optic tip sensor with a PhC cavity attached to the tip. A single mode from a short cavity is shown to couple simultaneously to at least three cavity modes of a long cavity, as concluded from level anticrossing data when the small cavity was photothermally tuned. Reconfigurable and movable cavities were created by locally varying the infiltration status by liquid oil near a PhC waveguide or defect cavity. Liquid was displaced locally on a micron scale using capillary force effects or laser-induced evaporation and condensation phenomena.

Using a micromanipulation technique, a planar photonic crystal nanocavity made from a thin semiconductor membrane is released from the host semiconductor and attached to the end facet of a standard single-mode optical fiber. The cavity spectrum can be read out through the fiber by detecting the photoluminescence of embedded quantum dots. The modified fiber end serves as a fiber-optic refractive index sensor.

We employ a far-field analysis of the angular emission pattern to experimentally assess the symmetry of localized modes in coupled photonic-crystal cavities. We demonstrate that the spatial distribution of localized modes in photonic-crystal nanocavities may change from a bonding to an antibonding orbital, a feature that is unusual in quantum mechanical coupled systems. Experimental data are confirmed by numerical calculations and interpreted in terms of the peculiar oscillatory behavior of the evanescent waves in photonic-crystal band gaps.

The authors experimentally investigate the effects of atomic layer deposition (ALD) and laser-assisted oxidation on the optical modes in GaAs L3 photonic crystal air-bridge cavities, using layers of InAs quantum dots as internal light source. Four distinct optical mode peaks are observed in the photonic bandgap and they show different wavelength-redshifts (0-6.5 nm) as the photonic crystal surface is coated with an Al2O3 layer (0-5.4 nm thick). Numerical finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations can well-reproduce the experimental result and give insight into the origin of the shifts of modes with different spatial profiles. By combining the ALD coating with in situ laser-assisted oxidation, we are able to both redshift and blueshift the optical modes and we attribute the blueshift to the formation of a GaAs-oxide at the expense of GaAs at the interface between GaAs and the Al2O3 layer. This result can be quantitatively reproduced by including a GaAs-oxide layer into the FDTD model. A large and reversible all-optical tuning effect is demonstrated for liquid crystal (LC) infiltrated InGaAsP photonic crystal membrane nanocavities. The tuning is based on the change in the refractive index of the LC due to the large local heating caused by absorption of laser light by the semiconductor. Compared to opto-thermal tuning based on semiconductor heating alone, the effects with the LC are an order of magnitude larger and can be either redshifting or blueshifting, depending on the spatial distribution of the cavity mode’s polarization direction.

We present a method for tuning the resonant wavelength of photonic crystal cavities (PCCs) around 1.55 um. Large tuning of the PCC mode is enabled by electromechanically controlling the separation between two parallel InGaAsP membranes. A fabrication method to avoid sticking between the membranes is discussed. Reversible red/blue shifting of the symmetric/anti-symmetric modes has been observed, which provides clear evidence of the electromechanical tuning, and a maximum shift of 10 nm with < 6 V applied bias has been obtained., 9 pages, 3 figures

Liquid crystal (LC, Merk 5 CB) is infiltrated into active, InAs quantum dots embedded, InGaAsP membrane type nanocavities to investigate the possible effect of the LC orientation on active cavity tuning. The tuning is demonstrated thermally and thermo-optically. The thermal tuning showed that the cavity modes can be tuned in opposite directions and exhibits a sudden change at the clearing temperature. The mechanism relies on the existence of both ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of the liquid crystal due to its molecular alignment inside the voids. It shows that the electric field distribution of cavity modes can have a substantial component parallel to the LC director. The average electric field orientation with respect to the LC orientation can be mode dependent, so that different modes can be dominated by either branch of the LCs refractive index. Thermo-optic tuning of the modes is obtained when the power of the excitation laser is increased from 40 ?W to 460 ?W. A large and a reversible blueshift of more than 10 nm of the cavity modes is observed which is attributed to temperature induced liquid transport. InGaAsP type of nanocavities, without InAs quantum dots were infiltrated with PbSe colloidal quantum dots to obtain a comparison of internal light sources either in the semiconductor or in the holes.

We demonstrate the nonresonant magnetic interaction at optical frequencies between a photonic crystal microcavity and a metallized near-field microscopy probe. This interaction can be used to map and control the magnetic component of the microcavity modes. The metal coated tip acts as a microscopic conductive ring, which induces a magnetic response opposite to the inducing magnetic field. The resulting shift in resonance frequency can be used to measure the distribution of the magnetic field intensity of the photonic structure and fine-tune its optical response via the magnetic field components. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

The sensitivities of resonant wavelengths of photonic crystal (PhC) membrane nanocavities with embedded InAs quantum dots to the ambient refractive index are reported for use in (bio) chemical sensing. The resonances for the different modes of several point-defect type cavities are obtained by photoluminescence measurements. Systematic trends of the variation of sensitivity with increase of the overlap of the modes with the PhC holes are observed for varying cavity type as well as for a given mode within a cavity type. A maximum sensitivity of approximately 300 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) is observed, corresponding to approximately 25% mode overlap with the holes and complete infiltration with the aqueous solution.
