Many of us teach that insects can see "invisible" ultraviolet light, but what demonstrations do we perform to illustrate this? Often UV can be used to cause fluorescence or phosphorescence, which can make its existence more visible. But, is it possible to create photographs or videos that convincingly illustrate the vision of insects? In this article we provide instruction on how to create such photographs with ultraviolet light and present an appropriate discussion of how and why insects and even some people can see beyond the visible color spectrum.

The Imaging and Photographic Technology area, in which the author teaches, is an applications- and technology-oriented photography program designed to prepare students for work in technical, corporate, industrial, and scientific environments. One day, the author received an e-mail message from an editor who had found his Web site and thought he might have some photographs that could be applicable to an article about a theory that has the world of science abuzz: string theory. She wanted to obtain photographs of vibrating strings or rubber bands or related items. While the author did not have anything specific to that immediately available, the author asked her to give him a day or so to come up with some photos. In this article, the author describes how he captures digital photographic images to illustrate the concept of string theory. (Contains 8 photos.)

The technology of aerial photography, photogrametry, has widespread applications in mapping and aerial surveying. A multi-billion-dollar industry, aerial surveying and mapping is "big business" in both civilian and military sectors. While the industry has grown increasingly automated, employment opportunities still exist for people with a basic appreciation for the technology, who often receive final training on the job. The activity described in this article brings the "aerial" aspects of aerial mapping and photography "down on earth." The activity simulates how someone would go about making estimates of the height of a subject above level ground from a single aerial photograph. (Contains 2 figures.)
