This paper reports the synthesis of TiO2nanoflowers as photovoltaic materials of the photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) via the phase liquid deposition technique assisted with a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant. This work investigates the influence of the surfactant concentration on the morphological, optical, phase structure and PEC properties of the TiO2PEC cell. The grain size of the TiO2sample decreases with increase in PVP concentration. The smallest grain size of 16 ± 2 nm is obtained at 8 mM PVP. The thickness of the sample increases with PVP concentration. The concentration of PVP does not influence the optical absorption and band gap of the sample. The phase structure and crystallinity degree of the sample are not influenced by PVP concentration. The crystallite size is around 20 nm. The short-circuit current density,Jsc, of the PEC cell utilising these TiO2samples increases with decrease in grain size which is due to the increase in PVP concentration. The performance of photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) strongly depends on the physical properties of photovoltaic material. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) surfactants were used to modify the morphology nanostructure of ZnO films by a simple technique, namely, ammonia-assisted controlled hydrolysis technique during their growth process. The film treated with PVP, CTAB and HMT produce the nanostructure shape of nanoflower, nanowire and nanorod (NR), respectively. These ZnO samples were utilised as photovoltaic materials in a PEC of FTO (fluorine tin oxide)/ZnO/electrolyte/platinum. It was found that the photovoltaic parameters such as short-circuit current density (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF) are influenced by the morphology in term of shape and particle size and optical property of the ZnO NR. The PEC utilising the ZnO sample treated with HMT surfactant demonstrated the highestJscof 0.47 mAcm−2,Vocof 0.46 V, FF of 29.2% and η of 0.06%, respectively, since it possesses the lowest energy gap.
