Halide double perovskites [A2MIMIIIX6] are an important class of materials that have garnered substantial interest as non‐toxic alternatives to conventional lead iodide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. While numerous studies have examined chloride and bromide double perovskites, reports of iodide double perovskites are rare, and their definitive structural characterization has not been reported. Predictive models have aided us here in the synthesis and characterization of five iodide double perovskites of general formula Cs2NaLnI6 (Ln=Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy). Perovskite-related materials show very promising properties in many fields. Pb-free perovskites are particularly interesting, because of the toxicity of Pb. In this study, hybrid double perovskite MA2KBiCl6 (MA = methylammonium cation) was found to have interesting variable temperature behaviours. Both variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were conducted to reveal a rhombohedral to cubic phase transition at around 330 K and an order to disorder transition for inorganic cage below 210 K. Trivalent metal hypophosphites with the general formula M(H2PO2)3 (M = V, Al, Ga) adopt the ReO3 structure, with each compound displaying two structural polymorphs. Abstract: There is current interest in finding nontoxic alternatives to lead‐halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. Silver–bismuth double perovskites have recently gained attention, but evaluating their carrier lifetime and recombination mechanisms from photoluminescence measurements is challenging due to their indirect bandgap. In this work, transient absorption spectroscopy is used to directly track the photocarrier population in Cs2AgBiBr6 by measuring the ground state bleach dynamics. A small initial drop is resolved in the ground state bleach on a picosecond timescale, after which the remaining photocarriers decay monoexponentially with a lifetime of 1.4 µs. The majority of the early‐time decay is attributed to hot‐carrier thermalization from the direct transition to the indirect bandgap, and the 1.4 µs lifetime represents the recombination of most photocarriers. From this lifetime, a steady‐state excess carrier density of 2.2 × 1016 cm−3 under 1 sun is calculated, which is an order of magnitude larger than that for methylammonium lead iodide, suggesting that charge transport and extraction can be efficient in Cs2AgBiBr6 solar cells. Abstract: The driving forces for the phase transitions of ABX3 hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites have been limited to the octahedral tilting, order–disorder, and displacement. Now, a complex structural phase transition has been explored in a HOIP, [CH3NH3][Mn(N3)3], based on structural characterizations and ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. This unusual first‐order phase transition between two ordered phases at about 265 K is primarily driven by changes in the collective atomic vibrations of the whole lattice, along with concurrent molecular displacements and an unusual octahedral tilting. A significant entropy difference (4.35 J K−1 mol−1) is observed between the low‐ and high‐temperature structures induced by such atomic vibrations, which plays a main role in driving the transition. This finding offers an alternative pathway for designing new ferroic phase transitions and related physical properties in HOIPs and other hybrid crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can undergo fascinating structural transitions triggered by external stimuli, such as adsorption/desorption of specific guest molecules or temperature changes. In this detailed study we investigate the potentials and limitations of tuning framework flexibility systematically by exploiting the powerful concept of mixed-linker solid solutions. We chose the prototypical family of functionalized pillared-layer MOFs of the general type Zn2(fu1-bdc)2x(fu2-bdc)2−2xdabco (with x = 1.00, 0.75, 0.50, 0.25 and 0.00; fu-bdc = 2,5-dialkoxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate with varying alkoxy chain length, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) and examined their guest responsive, as well as intrinsic temperature dependent structural flexibility by X-ray diffraction, gas physisorption and calorimetric measurements. The ratio of the different fu-bdc linkers can be adjusted freely, offering opportunity for a targeted design of these functional materials by modulating their key features, such as magnitude of framework contraction upon guest removal, breathing behaviour upon CO2 adsorption/desorption, thermoresponsive phase behaviour, and their general thermal expansivity, by the careful choice of fu-bdc linkers and their combination. Desolvated zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-4(Zn) undergoes a discontinuous porous to dense phase transition on cooling through 140 K, with a 23 % contraction in unit cell volume. The structure of the non-porous, low temperature phase was determined from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and its density was found to be slightly less than that of the densest ZIF phase, ZIF-zni. The mechanism of the phase transition involves a cooperative rotation of imidazolate linkers resulting in isotropic framework contraction and pore space minimization. DFT calculations established the energy of the new structure relative to those of the room temperature phase and ZIF-zni, while DSC measurements indicate the entropic stabilization of the porous room temperature phase at temperatures above 140 K. The structural and electronic properties of MnB4 were studied by high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and measurements of the conductivity and Seebeck coefficient on spark-plasma-sintered samples. A transition from the room-temperature monoclinic structure (space group P21/ c) to a high-temperature orthorhombic structure (space group Pnnm) was observed at about 650 K. The material remained semiconducting after the transition, but its behavior changed from p-type to n-type. 55Mn NMR measurements revealed an isotropic chemical shift of −1315 ppm, confirming an oxidation state of Mn close to I. Solid solutions of Cr1− xMn xB4 (two phases in space groups Pnnm and P21/ c) were synthesized for the first time. In addition, nanoindentation studies yielded values of (496±26) and (25.3±1.7) GPa for the Young's modulus and hardness, respectively, compared to values of 530 and 37 GPa obtained by DFT calculations. The effect of cation valency on the complex structures of divalent and trivalent transition metal gallates has been examined using a combination of neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and XANES spectroscopy. In the divalent frameworks, M(C7H4O5)·2H2O (M = Mn, Co and Ni), it was found that charge balance was achieved viathe presence of protons on the meta-hydroxyl groups. It was also established that these compounds undergo a discontinuous phase transition at lower temperatures, which is driven by the position of the extra-framework water molecules in these materials. By contrast, in the trivalent Fe gallate, Fe(C7H3O5)·2H2O, it was found that the stronger bonding between the meta-hydroxy oxygen and the cations leads to a weakening of the bond between this oxygen and its proton. This is turn is thought to lead to stronger hydrogen bonding with the extra-framework water. The lattice water is disordered in the Fe(iii) case, which prevents the phase transition found in the M(ii) gallates. Refinement against the neutron diffraction patterns also revealed that the relatively mild microwave synthesis of gallate frameworks in D2O led to an extensive deuteration of the ortho-hydrogen sites on the aromatic ring, which may suggest a more versatile method of deuterating aromatic organics.
