The Mt. Gorzano Fault (MGF) is a major seismically active extensional fault of the central Apennines, responsible for the destructive Mw 6.0 Amatrice earthquake in 2016. The MGF developed during post-orogenic extensional tectonics, generating a continental basin in the hanging wall. The age of the onset of the MGF and the relationship among faulting, fluid circulation, and the seismic cycles are unknown. We investigate these issues by studying the footwall damage zone of the MGF (exhumed from ~2-3 km depth), where extensional structures and related mineralizations cut and partially overprint the pre-existing compressional orogenic fabric. Structural and geochemical analyses (REE, O, C and clumped isotopes) combined with U-Pb dating of calcite mineralizations show that extensional deformation along the MGF began at least ~2.5 Myr ago. Its activity has continued to the present-day with a mean slip rate of ~0.9 mm/yr, consistent with other seismically active extensional faults of the central Apennines. During Apennine contractional tectonics, orogenic structures and tectonic overburden hindered the ascent of deep fluids, which, therefore, may have been progressively overpressured. We postulate that such overpressure occasionally or cyclically triggered impulsive deformation (earthquakes). During the subsequent extensional phase (younger ~2.5 Ma), pre- or co-seismic crustal dilation opened pathways for the ascent of deep mineralizing fluids, which impregnated the fault damage zone and may have triggered earthquakes. The crustal reservoir of carbonate-rich fluids nowadays is the source of water for the Acquasanta thermal springs close to the Mt. Gorzano seismic area.

We combined structural data collected in the field and those obtained from a virtual outcrop model constructed from drone imagery, to perform Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) modelling and to characterize the fracture distribution within the damage zone of the low-displacement (~50 m) carbonate-hosted Pietrasecca Fault (PF) (central Apennines, Italy). Both in the hanging wall and in the footwall damage zones, fractures are vertical and parallel to slightly oblique to the fault strike. Fracture length distributions in the footwall damage zone indicate a high degree of fracture maturity, while in the hanging wall damage zone they indicate a low degree of fracture maturity. Pervasive stylolitization in the hanging wall must have hindered the development of through-going fractures, favoring diffuse fracturing characterized by stylolite-bounded fractures. DFN models suggest that permeabilities are 1–2 orders of magnitude greater in the footwall damage zone than in the hanging wall damage zone. As permeability (10−12 to 10−15 m2) is comparable with those measured in large-displacement (up to 600 m) faults in carbonates, our results show that also damage zones accompanying carbonate faults with ~50 m of displacement could be fracture corridors for efficient fluid flow within subsurface reservoirs. Therefore, we propose that jumps in subsurface permeabilities occurring in many carbonate fractured reservoirs could be associated with to the occurrence of high permeability fracture zones developed within damage zones of low-displacement faults. As the recent advancement in seismic imaging allow the recognition of faults with displacement in the order of a few tens of meters, reservoir geologists and engineers can apply results of this study to better model the subsurface flow pathways near low displacement faults in carbonate reservoirs.

The extensional Val Roveto Fault, which is the longest exhumed potentially-seismogenic structure of central Apennines, Italy, is examined to constrain earthquake-related fluid circulation and fluid sources within shallow carbonate-hosted faults. The study focuses on fault-related comb and slip-parallel veins that are calcite-filled and cut through the principal surface of the Val Roveto Fault. We observe multiple crack-and-seal events characterized by several veining episodes, probably related to different slip increments along the fault plane. We show that vein calcite precipitated in Late Pleistocene time below the present-day outcrop level at a maximum depth of similar to 350 m and temperatures between 32 and 64 degrees C from meteoric-derived fluids modified by reactions with crustal rocks and with a mantle contribution (up to similar to 39%). Fault inversion may lead to significant obliteration of earlier tectonic structures, thus preventing the straightforward interpretation of the complete kinematics and deformation history of faults. We adopt a multidisciplinary approach to: (1) reconstruct the tectonic evolution through space and in time of the extensionally-inverted Mt. Tancia Thrust (Central Apennines, Italy); (2) understand the deformation mechanisms and the transition and reactivation of compressional structures during negative tectonic inversion; and (3) constrain the origin of fluids involved during tectonic processes. To this end, we combined: (1) detailed geological mapping and multiscale structural analysis; (2) illite-smectite paleothermal indicators; (3) C, O, and clumped isotopes on calcite mineralizations and (4) K–Ar dating of authigenic and/or syn-kinematic illite from the Mt. Tancia Thrust fault rocks. We show that shortening occurred between ~9 and ~7 Ma, during possibly multiple events of fluid overpressure and shear rupturing involving fluids entrapped over long term within the host rocks. Post-compressive tectonic inversion occurred at ~3 Ma under fluid pressure fluctuations during shear events with an input of meteoric-derived fluids. Tectonic inversion is spatially confined within the first few metres below the thrust surface in a volume dominated by the partial overprinting, folding, transposition, and re-utilization of the earlier compressional fabric.

Orientation and distribution of fractures in the Oligocene–Early Miocene Asmari Formation (a major reservoir rock of the Zagros petroleum system) were investigated in two anticlines of the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt. The Sim and Kuh-e-Asmari anticlines developed in the areas of the Zagros characterized by the occurrence and absence of Cambrian evaporites at the bottom of the stratigraphic pile, respectively. The aim was to outline major differences in terms of fracture spacing and saturation. Organic matter maturity and clay minerals-based geothermometers suggest that the depth of deformation for the top of the Asmari Formation in the Kuh-e-Asmari anticline was in the range of 1.5–2.7 km assuming a geothermal gradient of 22.5 °C/km. The Asmari Formation in the Sim anticline probably experienced a slightly deeper sedimentary burial (maximum 3 km) with a geothermal gradient of 20 °C/km. The spacing of fractures is generally 2–3 times larger (i.e., strain accommodated by fracturing is smaller) in the Sim anticline than in the Kuh-e-Asmari anticline. This is consistent with regional geological studies, analogue, and numerical models that suggest that thrust faults geometry and related folds are markedly different in the absence or presence of a weak decollement (evaporites). The larger spacing in the Sim anticline is also consistent with higher temperature predicted for the Asmari Formation in this area. By contrast, the orientation of fractures with respect to the fold axes is the same in both anticlines. The fracture systems are rather immature in both anticlines. The amount and density of fractures in the twofolds are controlled by regional (occurrence/absence of salt and probably different burial), rather than local features (fold geometry).
