Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by problems with identity and self-direction. Since the recent dimensional PD models of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , fifth edition ( DSM-5 ) and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 11th edition, the role of identity and self-direction in personality pathology has been made explicitly by including these problems in a general personality pathology criterion. This criterion reflects impairment in personality functioning (IPF), which is assessed on a continuum to determine the severity of personality pathology. The present study aimed to psychometrically evaluate the Five-Item Screening Scale for Personality Disorders (FISSPD; Skodol et al., 2011), a short screener for IPF, in a Dutch-speaking clinical sample of 820 adults. This screener mainly taps into self-related impairment, with four items measuring self-related impairment and one item measuring interpersonal impairment. The factor structure, scale reliability, measurement invariance (across sex, age, and patients with vs. without PD), and convergent validity were investigated. The Dutch FISSPD showed a unidimensional structure and good scale reliability. Scalar measurement invariance was established across sex, age (patients below vs. above age 40), and patients with versus without PD. The Dutch FISSPD was significantly related to identity and all DSM-IV/5 Section-II PD symptoms. The present study indicates that the Dutch FISSPD has potential as a reliable and valid screener for personality pathology in adult patients. Background: The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form + Modified (PID-5-BF+M) is a self-report questionnaire measuring maladaptive personality traits, as defined by the dimensional classifications of personality disorders in DSM-5 Section 3 and ICD-11. The instrument combines both classifications to capture six personality domains and 18 underlying personality facets, operationalized by two items each. This study examined the construct validity of this questionnaire in older adults, by examining the factor structure and the reliability of the domains and facets. Additionally, the study investigated the relationship between maladaptive personality traits and resilience, as measured by the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC)., Method: The PID-5-BF+M was administered to 251 older adults from the general population, 104 of the respondents also filled in the CD-RISC., Results: The hierarchical factor structure of the PID-5-BF+M was corroborated in in older adults. Additionally, the domain and facet scales were found to be internally consistent. The correlations with the CD-RISC showed logical associations. The domain of Negative Affectivity and the facets Emotional Lability, Anxiety and Irresponsibility were negatively associated with resilience., Conclusion: Based on these results, this study supports the construct validity of the PID-5-BF+M in older adults. However, future research on the age-neutrality of the instrument is still needed.

Despite growing clinical attention to personality disorders in older adults (≥ 55 yrs.), empirical research addressing personality pathology in late life is scarce. Given the ageing of the population globally, scientific knowledge in this area is of vital importance. This article gives an overview of the epidemiological aspects of personality disorders in older adults, such as prevalence, the course and the impact on various domains of functioning.

Introduction: Both in personality assessment and scientific research, self-report questionnaires are frequently used, yet the use of informant-report is increasing. The aim of this systematic review is to address the concordance and added value of informant- versus self-report in measuring personality pathology in (older) adults., Method: A systematic search has been carried out for relevant literature published between 2000 and 2018, via the databases Scopus, PsychINFO and PubMED. Also the reference lists of included articles have been checked, resulting in an inclusion of 46 studies., Results: The concordance between informant- and self-report appears to be only moderate, but highest when the relationship is characterized by interpersonal intimacy (such as between partners). The concordance between informants is somewhat better than between informant- and self -reports. Informants have an added value over self-report in the context of externalizing personality traits and interpersonal functioning. In addition, they appear to be a better predictor for health, adaptability and professional functioning. Self-report on the other hand captures intrapsychic characteristics more thoroughly., Conclusion: In personality assessment, informant- and self-reports could be complementary. However, empirical research among older adults is almost uncharted territory and deserves more attention.

Personality features are considered to be important factors in the pathogenesis of both eating disorder (ED) and substance use disorder (SUD). This study investigates similarities and differences between these early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) (a) between female patients with ED (N = 179) or SUD (N = 169) and (b) between ED subtypes of the restrictive (N = 52), bulimic type (N = 127), or SUD. In total, 348 female patients (M age  = 29.95; SD age  = 8.40) completed the Young Schema Questionnaire. Multivariate analyses of covariance with EMS scales as dependent variables and (a) ED versus SUD and (b) ED subtypes versus SUD as independent variables and age and psychopathology as control variables revealed that ED patients scored significantly higher on Unrelenting Standards, Defectiveness, Social Undesirability, and Failure than did SUD patients. Additionally, when comparing ED subtypes and SUD, bulimic and SUD patients scored significantly higher on Insufficient Self-Control than did restrictive patients. Studies on the face validity of DSM-5 Section II categorical personality disorder (PD) symptoms indicate a bias against older adults. To extend these results, this article explores whether categorically and dimensionally scored PD symptoms of DSM-5 Section II, as measured in the Assessment of DSM-IV Personality Disorders (ADP-IV; Schotte & de Doncker, 1994), corroborate potential age bias across younger (aged 18-34), middle-aged (35-59 years), and older adults (aged 60-75). Differential item functioning (DIF) analyses, following a classical test theory approach, showed that 2 of the 79 symptoms were measured differently across 3 age groups when categorically assessed, and 4 when dimensionally measured. Nevertheless, subsequent differential test functioning analyses supported a low aggregated impact of DIF on the dimensional scales, justifying mean-level comparisons across age groups. Generalizability of the results is discussed in light of methodological issues concerning the research of age neutrality of PD symptoms, including the employed measurement instrument, PD symptom measurement approach, and sample and age range used to describe older adults.

Despite recent modifications to the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for Eating Disorders (ED; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), sources of variability in the clinical presentation of ED patients remain poorly understood. Consistent with previous research that has used underlying personality dimensions to identify distinct subgroups of ED patients, the present study examined (1) whether we could identify clinically meaningful subgroups of patients based on temperamental factors including Behavioral Inhibition (BIS), Behavioral Activation (BAS) and Effortful Control (EC), and (2) whether the identified subgroups would also differ with respect to ED, Axis-I and Axis-II psychopathology. One hundred and forty five ED inpatients participated in this study. Results of a k-means analysis identified three distinct groups of patients: an Overcontrolled/Inhibited group (n=53), an Undercontrolled/Dysregulated group (n=58) and a Resilient group (n=34). Further, group comparisons revealed that patients in the Undercontrolled/Dysregulated group demonstrated more severe symptoms of bulimia, hostility and Cluster B Personality Disorders compared to the other groups, while patients in the Resilient group demonstrated the least severe psychopathology. These findings have important implications for understanding how individual differences in personality may impact patterns of ED symptoms and co-occurring psychopathology in patients with ED., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. In DSM-5, the categorical model and criteria for the 10 personality disorders included in DSM-IV will be reprinted in Section II. Moreover, an alternative dimensional classification model will appear in Section III. This alternative DSM-5 proposal for the diagnosis of a personality disorder is based on two fundamental criteria: impairments in personality functioning (Criterion A) and the presence of pathological personality traits (Criterion B). In the maladaptive trait model that has been developed to operationalize Criterion B, 25 pathological traits are organized according to five higher order dimensions. The current study focuses on the convergence of the proposed DSM-5 trait model (as measured by the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 [PID-5]) with the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology (DAPP) model (as measured by the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology-Basic Questionnaire [DAPP-BQ]) in a sample of older people. A joint hierarchical factor analysis showed clear convergence between four PID-5 dimensions (Negative Affect, Detachment, Antagonism, Disinhibition) and conceptually similar DAPP-BQ components. Moreover, the PID-5 and the DAPP-BQ showed meaningful associations on different levels of their joint hierarchical factor structure. Methodological and theoretical implications of these initial results for the conceptualization of personality pathology are discussed.

Research on the applicability of the five factor model (FFM) to capture personality pathology coincided with the development of a FFM personality disorder (PD) count technique, which has been validated in adolescent, young, and middle-aged samples. This study extends the literature by validating this technique in an older sample. Five alternative FFM PD counts based upon the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) are computed and evaluated in terms of both convergent and divergent validity with the Assessment of DSM-IV Personality Disorders Questionnaire (shortly ADP-IV; DSM-IV, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth edition). For the best working count for each PD normative data are presented, from which cut-off scores are derived. The validity of these cut-offs and their usefulness as a screening tool is tested against both a categorical (i.e., the DSM-IV - Text Revision), and a dimensional (i.e., the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology; DAPP) measure of personality pathology. All but the Antisocial and Obsessive-Compulsive counts exhibited adequate convergent and divergent validity, supporting the use of this method in older adults. Using the ADP-IV and the DAPP - Short Form as validation criteria, results corroborate the use of the FFM PD count technique to screen for PDs in older adults, in particular for the Paranoid, Borderline, Histrionic, Avoidant, and Dependent PDs. Given the age-neutrality of the NEO PI-R and the considerable lack of valid personality assessment tools, current findings appear to be promising for the assessment of pathology in older adults.

Temperament and personality traits are important factors underlying the vulnerability for both the initiation and continuation of addictive behaviors. We investigated the influence of reactive and regulative temperament and their interaction in relation to clinical symptomatology and personality disorders (PDs) in a sample of 841 inpatients (68.1% males) with a substance use disorder (SUD). To assess reactive temperament we used the Behavioral Inhibition and Behavioral Activation Scales (BISBAS) and to assess regulative temperament we used the Effortful Control Scale. Clinical symptomatology and personality traits were measured by means of the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and the Assessment of ADP-IV Personality Disorders (ADP-IV). Hierarchical regression analyses showed that both, clinical symptomatology and PDs were related to low levels of effortful control (EC). None of the two-way interactions (BIS × EC, BAS × EC) however were significantly related to psychopathology. Current findings highlight the role of effortful control (EC) in the expression of psychopathology in an adult sample of inpatients with SUD. Therapeutic interventions aiming at strengthening EC can possibly result in better treatment outcomes for both the addiction and the comorbid psychopathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
