When magnetic saturation occurs during the operation of a permanent magnet (PM) slotless brushless DC motor, the material permeability will no longer be a constant value, and the neglected magnetic saturation model used for motor optimization will no longer be applicable. And considering that the increase in motor torque will lead to a high temperature rise of the winding, therefore, an electromagnetic heat coupling model applicable to the occurrence of magnetic saturation in the motor is established, and the model is utilized in combination with the particle swarm algorithm to enhance the maximum output torque of the motor. Firstly, a 100 W, 16,400 r/min high-speed PM slotless DC brushless motor is taken as the object of study, and its electromagnetic–thermal coupling model is established to derive the analytical equations for the electromagnetic torque with respect to the split ratio, the thickness of the stator yoke, the PM thickness, and the copper loss. Secondly, based on the modeling, the motor was optimized using a particle swarm algorithm to maximize the output torque and minimize the copper loss. Finally, a prototype was fabricated and verified with the prototype through no-load and load experiments. The difference between the theoretical maximum output torque and the experimental maximum output torque is less than 8%. The results show that this method can effectively predict the maximum output torque of the motor in the case of magnetic saturation, and the model is suitable for increasing the maximum output torque of slotless brushless DC motors under space constraints. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive investigation into the comparative analysis and design optimization of ferrite-based surface permanent magnet vernier machines (SPMVMs). While SPMVMs boast a simple mechanical structure and enhanced torque density attributed to the flux modulation effect, they suffer from a persistent challenge of low power factor. Several factors hinder the adoption of low-cost ferrite magnets in SPMVMs. First, ferrite magnets are prone to irreversible demagnetization, constraining the allowable range of magnet thickness. Second, the reduced residual magnetic flux density of ferrite magnets exacerbates the decrease in power factor and machine efficiency. Thus, achieving optimal performance in ferrite-based SPMVMs necessitates the careful selection of various design parameters. To address these issues, this study employs a surrogate-based metaheuristic optimization algorithm with adaptive sampling to identify the optimal solution. Additionally, the integration of a Halbach array is explored to further enhance the performance of the three-slot/two-pole SPMVM topology. Subsequently, two ferrite-based SPMVM baseline models—one with a conventional SPM structure and another with a Halbach magnet array—are thoroughly designed, optimized, and subjected to detailed performance analysis using the 2D finite element method. In this study, a generalized torque estimation method is proposed for synchronous motors, including surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs), synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs), and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) for building the analytical motor model. The average motor torque is estimated using the Lorentz force by the generated flux density in the air gap to determine the relationships among torque, flux density, and injected current. In the proposed method, the generated flux density is derived step by step by considering the effects of magnetic flux saturation, the stator slot, the rotor barrier, and permanent magnets (PMs) to ensure that the generated average torque complies with the operating condition of the motor. To verify the proposed method, the output torque of finite element analysis (FEA), Maxwell 2D, is compared to the proposed method in a SPMSM. Moreover, a phasor diagram is plotted to determine the mechanism through which torque is generated in SynRMs and IPMSMs. A SynRM and an IPMSM with ferrites PMs are analyzed using the proposed method, FEA, and the experimental results of this study indicate the effectiveness. In this article, an efficient multi-objective optimization strategy for the Halbach array permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is developed by taking into consideration the nonlinear B-H behavior of soft magnetic materials. Based on the harmonic modeling (HM) technology, the electromagnetic performances (EPs) of the Halbach array PMSM can be computed. To specifically model the local magnetic saturation, the stator teeth are separated into several annular layers, and each tooth is further divided into several regions along the tangential direction. Then, the parameters of the Halbach array PMSM are optimized utilizing combined nonlinear semi-analytical model (SAM) and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). To validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the developed optimization scheme, a Halbach array prototype is then manufactured in accordance with the optimization results. The multi-objective rapid optimization strategy developed in this article, which includes but is not limited to Halbach array permanent magnet (PM) machines, serves as a reference for the design and optimization of various PM machines. This article presents the process of building a hybrid analytical model (HAM) for surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines. The HAM couples a reluctance network (RN) model in the stator region with a magnetic scalar potential analytical model in the air gap and magnets regions. This hybrid model can deal with the slotting effect with straight teeth, and takes magnetic saturation into account in the stator iron material using the RN model. It is calculated under open-circuit and loaded conditions. The magnetic flux density, flux linkage, back electromotive force (EMF), and torque of the machines are also calculated. This hybrid model is compared with the subdomain method. It is also compared with the finite element method (FEM) both in terms of the size of the matrix that needs to be calculated and in terms of the torque error. We analyzed this method for two surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines, one with a symmetry factor of four and another with a symmetry factor of three. In both cases, HAM reduced the size of the matrix that needed to be solved compared to FEM. In the machine with a symmetry factor of three, when the matrix size of both FEM and HAM was around 1700 × 1700, the torque error of FEM was 2.62% compared to the high-mesh-density FEM simulation, while the torque error of HAM was only 0.17% compared to the same simulation. HAM also had significant advantages over the subdomain method, as it reduced the torque error from 16.8% to 0.08% in the case of high magnetic saturation. The HAM can, hence, play a significant role in the design and optimization of surface-mounted permanent-magnet machines, especially in cases where magnetic saturation is present. Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) have garnered increasing interest because of their advantages such as high efficiency, high power density, wide speed range, and fast dynamics. They have been employed recently in several industrial applications including robotics and electric vehicles (EVs). However, PMSMs have highly nonlinear magnetic characteristics, especially interior PMSMs, due to the existence of reluctance torque. Nonlinearity complicates not only machine modeling but also control algorithms. An accurate machine model is the key aspect for the prediction of machine performance as well as the development of a high-performance control algorithm. Hence, this paper presents an accurate modelling method for PMSMs. The proposed model method is applicable for all PMSMs, even multiphase machines. This paper considers a fractional slot concentrated winding 12/10 interior PMSM (IPMSM) for this study to demonstrate the effect of magnetic saturation and special harmonics. The developed model considers accurately the magnetic saturation, mutual coupling, spatial harmonics, and iron loss effects. It utilizes finite element analysis (FEA) to estimate the precise magnetic characteristics of IPMSM. The finite element model is calibrated precisely using experimental measurements. This article presents an analytical method to predict the magnetic field of eccentric surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) by applying the hybrid magnetic circuit and subdomain method. Taking stator saturation into account, the surface current is appended to the stator coil conductor, which can generate a magnetomotive force (MMF) to compensate the MMF drop across the stator core. The rotor yoke saturation effect is modeled by increasing the air-gap length. To solve the problem resulted from rotor eccentricity in analytical analysis, an equivalent transformation method is given. The transformation principle is that the eccentric machine can be equivalent to a concentric one with redistributed PM remanence and armature current density. On this basis, the subdomain method is adopted to predict the magnetic field of the reestablished machine. Parameter identification of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is critical toward building an accurate machine model, achieving precise control, and improving operational reliability. This article proposes a decoupled estimation scheme for interior PMSM with consideration of magnetic saturation as nonlinear functions of current to improve the inductance estimation accuracy. An improved machine model considering magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects by utilizing a quadratic model in inductance calculation is developed. Furthermore, the decoupled estimation scheme with considering stator resistance and iron loss resistance can effectively reduce the interaction in the process of parameter identification, and the least square algorithm is employed to improve the computational efficiency. Moreover, this proposed method is especially dedicated to the modern testing solutions that require complex hardware and extensive machine operation while being noninvasive by nature. A soliton is a unique wave that maintains its shape and constant velocity. It has been observed widely in natural nonlinear systems. In particular, a magnetic soliton has been observed experimentally on a nonlinear LC ladder circuit array. The aim of this article is to excite a magnetic soliton on the LC ladder circuit array using a permanent-magnet-flux-biased (PMFB) inductor. Electromagnetic analysis reveals that the PMFB inductor has exponential inductance characteristics due to the effective use of magnetic saturation in the stator core. Four PMFB inductors with different magnetic circuit topologies are analyzed and compared, to decrease the inductor current. Finally, this article numerically solves the loop equation for the LC ladder circuit array and shows that the magnetic soliton is successfully excited and propagates without changing its shape and velocity. This paper develops a method for permanent magnet (PM) temperature estimation in high power density permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) by considering magnetic saturation. Most of the previous methods in the literature are based on unsaturation. In this paper, the temperature estimation method of PMs is improved by adding a saturation coefficient. Once a machine is assembled, the inner and outer PM surfaces cannot be seen. Thus, it is impossible to realize visualization measurement of the permanent magnet temperature distribution. In this case, temperature sensors attached to the PM cam be used. However, the cost and robustness need to be considered. Therefore, in this paper, by solving a magnetic–thermal coupling finite element model, the temperature field distribution of a high power density PMSM is obtained. A new technique to observe the electromagnetic torque of a permanent magnet synchronous machine based on flux linkage estimation considering unknown magnetic condition is presented in this article. The magnetic behavior uncertainties including permanent magnet flux, linear self-inductances, linear coupling-effect inductances, and magnetic saturations are taken into account as a set of new variables in the model of machine. Regarding the new model, an appropriate observer based on Kalman-like algorithm is proposed to observe those variables. Then, the variables are collected and used to estimate the flux linkages and consequently the machine torque. The observability as well as the stability of the observer for the proposed system is theoretically investigated. The simulation and experimental results are represented for different scenarios. In this article, to improve the adjustment ability of air gap flux, a new interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machine with permeability modulation characteristics is proposed for electric vehicles’ (EVs) potential applications. The main trait of the machine structure is that a bridge between the rotor poles is intentionally established, which can produce a smooth magnetic path for the leakage flux. Thus, the flux leakage state can be adjusted by controlling the magnetic saturation of the bridge according to the machine load current. To clarify this feature, the machine performances are investigated by theoretical analysis and finite-element method. Finally, the designed machine is manufactured and its performances are verified by experiments. Both the simulation and experimental results prove that the torque of the proposed machine under loaded conditions can be flexibly adjusted by the magnetic permeability modulation without any complex control strategy. Accurate models and fast calculations are required for the design of permanent magnet machines. This article presents a 2-D hybrid model for the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) combining the Fourier model and the finite element method (FEM). Both magnetic saturation and parallel teeth are taken into account. The model is validated by FEM. The results show that in structures that are saturated, the hybrid model performs much better than the linear Fourier model and simultaneously reduces a large amount of computation compared with FEM. In recent decades, switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have been attracting increasing attention as a promising type of traction motors for electric vehicle propulsion, owing to their robust construction, elimination of permanent magnets. However, their phase inductance profile contains significant high-order harmonics, which generates input-current and torque ripples under SRM drive with the conventional square phase-current waveform. This study solves this problem by proposing a novel phase-current waveform in replacement of this square waveform. The proposed waveform is a predetermined waveform that can be stored as a look-up table in the inverter controller and can be magnified or attenuated to adjust the output torque, similarly as the conventional square waveform. Certainly, SRMs generally exhibit magnetic non-linearity due to magnetic saturation, which complicates the analysis. Therefore, the proposed waveform is analytically derived under the assumption that the magnetisation of the motor remains below the saturation level because vehicle propulsion tends to require a torque output far smaller than the maximum rating of the motor in normal vehicle travel. The proposed phase-current waveform is experimentally tested in comparison with the conventional square phase-current waveform. Summary: This article proposes an analytical model based on magnetic equivalent circuit for a transverse‐flux permanent magnet machine (TFPMM). Taking into account, the magnetic saturation in iron parts of the machine, the proposed method is capable of calculating the performance parameters of the machine such as flux density, flux linkage, cogging torque, back‐EMF and its harmonic contents with high accuracy. In order to evaluate the accuracy of proposed model, performance parameters of a TFPMM obtained analytically are compared to those achieved by three‐dimensional finite element method (3‐D FEM). A preliminary optimisation based on the proposed analytical modelling is presented to show suitability of the approach in performance parameter optimisation of TFPMM. In comparison to 3‐D FEM, the proposed model introduces less computational time, while the accuracy remains approximately the same. The results show that the proposed approach can be used during design stage and optimisation of the transverse flux machine as a simple, fast and accurate alternative to the precise but time consuming and tedious 3‐D FEM. Offline parameter identification of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is of great importance for general-purpose drives with sensorless control. This paper proposes an amplitude-auto-adjusting signal injection (ASI) method for the parameter self-learning of PMSMs at standstill considering inverter nonlinearities and the digital time-delay effect. The ASI method achieves the inductance identification process under various dq-axis currents and at the same time prevents the unexpected rotor rotation during the self-commissioning process. For the test PMSM, the spatial inductance maps of dq-axes and abc-phases concerning the magnetic saturation and cross-coupling effects are identified along with the stator resistance. To enhance the estimation accuracy, an error model of the inverter nonlinearities in dq-axes is established, and a compensation method independent of inverter parameters is proposed based on the Hermite interpolation. In addition, the influence of the digital time-delay effect is analyzed and compensated based on the transient model of the circuits. The effectiveness of the proposed parameter self-learning scheme is confirmed on a 2.2-kW PMSM drive. Magnetic saturation characteristics of synchronous reluctance motors (SyRMs), with or without permanent magnets, are highly nonlinear. These nonlinear effects can be included in the current controller by changing its state variable from the stator current to the stator flux linkage using the known saturation characteristics. A direct discrete-time variant of the flux-linkage-based current controller is developed in a state-space framework. If the magnetics are modeled to be linear, the proposed control structure reduces to the standard current controller in this special case. Experimental results on a 6.7-kW SyRM drive demonstrate that the proposed flux-linkage-based controller enables a higher closed-loop bandwidth and is more robust against parameter errors, as compared to the standard current controller. Core loss is one of the significant factors affecting the high power density of permanent magnet machines; thus, it is necessary to consider core loss in machine design. This paper presents a novel method for calculating the core loss of permanent magnet synchronous machines under space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) excitation, taking magnetic saturation and cross coupling into account. In order to accurately obtain the direct and quadrature (d-q) axis, current in the given load condition, the permanent magnet motor model under SVPWM excitation has been modified, so as to consider the influence of magnetic saturation and cross coupling effects on the d-q axis flux-linkage. Based on the magnetic field distribution caused by permanent magnet and armature reactions, the stator core loss can be calculated with the core loss analytical model, corresponding to the rotational magnetic field. In this study, the method has been applied to analyze core loss in an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine, and has been validated by the experimental results. The influence of pole/slot number combinations on core loss in the same on-load condition is also investigated. This study provides a potential method to guide motor design optimization. In this paper, an analytical torque ripple model for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) is introduced at first, which can be used to estimate the torque ripple. Then, the inductance variation due to magnetic saturation is analyzed through experimental investigations, which demonstrates that magnetic saturation has a great influence on the inductances, and hence the torque ripple minimization performance. Thus, this paper proposes an online parameter identification approach to estimate the inductances and incorporates them into the torque ripple minimization. The proposed parameter identification approach can estimate the dq-axis inductances accurately such that it brings significant torque ripple minimization improvement for IPMSMs. Numerical and experimental investigations have been conducted to validate the proposed approach based on a laboratory IPMSM. The detent force of permanent magnet (PM) linear synchronous machines is the main source of thrust ripple. Its calculation becomes significant, especially under different load conditions. By using frozen permeability (FP) method, it can be obtained based on either the integral of Maxwell stress tensor or the virtual work principle. However, the calculated result from the former has nonzero average value, and the latter is complicated with general commercial finite element (FE) packages. For fast calculation and high precision, a hybrid FE-analytical method based on d-q axis flux linkage model is proposed, which only needs to calculate the thrust force and the flux linkage of two FE models. One is the nonlinear model with both PM and armature current excitations, and the other is the linear model with armature current only by using the FP method. The predicted result is compared with those of two existing approaches, which validates that the detent force can be calculated properly under different load conditions by the proposed method. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of permanent magnet synchronous machine stator winding impedance variation in inter-turn short-circuit and eccentricity faults. The phase impedances are monitored through an extended self-commissioning procedure at the standstill mode before or after operation, and hence are agnostic to well-known issues caused by transients, load/speed level, or controller coefficient dependency. Moreover, the effect of stator iron core saturation on the electrical parameters is analyzed in depth. In order to distinguish the inter-turn shorts from the eccentricity fault which exhibits similar behaviors, a classification algorithm based on the saturation effect is introduced and analyzed on the machines with different pole-slot combinations. SUMMARY We have developed novel mathematical models of d-axis and q-axis magnetic fluxes ϕd and ϕq for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). The models can be used to approximate magnetic characteristics using simple fractional equations with id and iq as variables. They include eight constants, and some of them represent the degree of magnetic saturation and cross-coupling. However, the magnetic characteristics are varied with the temperature rise in PMSMs, which are dependent on the load torque and motor speed. In this paper, the characteristics of the eight constants that vary with the motor temperature and the residual flux density Br are shown. Magnetization of large Nd-Fe-B sintered permanent magnets is still challenging. This type of permanent magnet is electrically conductive, so impulse magnetization causes a flow of eddy currents which prevent magnetization of the whole volume of the magnet. The paper deals with the impulse magnetization of sintered Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets and shows a method for the determination of suitable parameters for the supply system. The necessary magnetic field strength for magnetization of the magnet to saturation was determined. The optimal magnetizing fixture supply voltage for magnetization to saturation was determined from simulations in PSpice software, finite element analyses in Maxwell 15 and measurements. Measurements of magnetic induction on the surface of the Nd-Fe-B magnet are also presented to ensure that a magnet with 70 mm diameter and 20 mm in height is fully saturated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an improved conformal mapping (ICM) method for magnetic field analysis in one typical surface-mounted permanent-magnet (SMPM) motor considering the static, dynamic, and mixed rotor eccentricities. The ICM method accurately accounts for the slotting effect, the winding distribution, the armature reaction, the magnetic saturation effect, and the working point variation of PMs throughout their volume. The ICM method is also very rigorous to separate the onload air gap field components. First, the slotless model of an eccentric SMPM motor is mapped to one concentric model using a new form of bilinear conformal mapping, and the field solution is then obtained through applying Hague's solution in the main canonical domain. Second, the slotted air gap magnetic field is obtained through the modulation of air gap magnetic field in the slotless physical domain using the complex relative air gap permeance. The ICM method is also used to investigate the influence of rotor eccentricity on the flux linkage of the stator coils. This developed model is validated through comparing with the corresponding results obtained through finite element method and the frozen permeability method. This paper focuses on the 3-D effects associated with rotor step-skews performed in permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machines (PMA SynRMs). It analyzes and quantifies these effects via comparisons between 2-D and 3-D finite-element analyses (FEA) of skewed and unskewed machines. The 3-D phenomena manifested in the skewed PMA SynRM are identified into end-effects and axial interactions between skewed steps, and their influence on its electromagnetic performance is examined under load and no-load conditions. This paper exemplifies the significance of the skew-associated 3-D effects, which can result in considerable decrease of the back electromotive force and a substantially increased electromagnetic torque ripple. It, thereby, highlights the inability of the typically employed multislice 2-D FEA or other existing 2-D-based modeling techniques in taking their influence into account. Owing to different magnetic saturation conditions in surface-mounted permanent magnet machines operating under different loads, the optimal design to minimize the cogging torque may not be the one to minimize torque ripple as well. This paper investigates the design tradeoff between the open-circuit cogging torque and the on-load torque ripple by taking the design of slot opening as an example. With the aid of the frozen permeability method, first, the torque components under different slot opening widths and load conditions are presented based on a 12-slot/8-pole machine. The result reveals that the on-load cogging increases significantly, especially when a small slot opening width is adopted, which is opposite to the condition for minimizing the open-circuit cogging torque. Then, two machines separately designed for minimum open-circuit cogging torque or minimum on-load torque ripple are compared to illustrate alternative design tradeoffs. The mechanism and the influence of the on-load terminal phase voltage distortion by the armature reaction in interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines with fractional-slot concentrated windings (FSCWs) are investigated in this paper, by taking a 12-slot/8-pole machine as an example. The phenomenon is presented first, which shows that the peak voltage will be much higher than the fundamental value, especially under the flux-weakening operation. Then, the mechanism is investigated with the aid of the frozen permeability method. Due to the geometric feature of the FSCW IPM rotor, the armature reaction flux will asymmetrically enhance the local magnetic saturation in the tooth-tips and the rotor lamination region near the rotor ribs, which disrupt the smooth variation of phase flux linkage and lead to a voltage distortion. With the increasing of current advancing angle ( $\beta $ ), this effect will become more obvious and result in the higher distortion level. Furthermore, the influences of voltage distortion on the machine torque performance are investigated, which show that it will only contribute to the torque ripple in the constant torque region, but will largely reduce the flux-weakening operation region compared with the ideal one calculated by the fundamental voltages only. The optimal magnetizing fixture supply voltage for magnetization to saturation was determined from simulations in PSpice software, finite element analyses in Maxwell 15 and measurements. Measurements of magnetic induction on the surface of the Nd-Fe-B magnet are also presented to ensure that a magnet with 70 mm diameter and 20 mm in height is fully saturated.

An interior permanent-magnet (PM) motor is modeled by a combined analytical–numerical approach, in which the relationships between the stator currents and flux linkages are identified with static finite-element (FE) analysis. In addition to the previous approaches using the current space vector as the state variable, new models are also developed using the flux-linkage space vector, which leads to more convenient time-integration of the voltage equations. In order to account for the zero-sequence effects in delta connection, the models also include either the zero-sequence flux or current as an additional state variable. Finally, the possibilities of deriving the required quantities as partial derivatives of the magnetic field energy are discussed. The energy-based approaches avoid inaccuracies related to torque computation and thus allow better satisfying the power balance in the state-space model. We show the ability of the developed state-space models to predict the currents and torque equally to a nonlinear time-stepping FE model with much less computational burden. The results are validated by means of measurements for a prototype machine in both star and delta connections. This paper investigates the torque characteristics of permanent-magnet flux switching (PMFS) machines with rotor step skewing. The cogging torque, torque ripple, and average output torque of a PMFS machine with a common stator and different rotor pole widths and rotor pole numbers are first established using two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA). A cost-effective rotor step skewing technique is then proposed to reduce the cogging torque and torque ripple of the machine with two different rotors. The results have revealed that the least step number and angle for optimal torque ripple mitigation of the PMFS machine are determined by the harmonic contents of the torque pulsation and the rotor pole number. The influences of load conditions on the machine torque characteristics are carried out by varying current excitations. Condition monitoring of rotor problems such as demagnetization and eccentricity in permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) is essential for guaranteeing high motor performance, efficiency, and reliability. However, there are many limitations to the offline and online methods currently used for PMSM rotor quality assessment. In this paper, an inverter-embedded technique for automated detection and classification of PMSM rotor faults is proposed as an alternative. The main concept is to use the inverter to perform a test whenever the motor is stopped and to detect rotor faults independent of operating conditions or load torque oscillations, which is not possible with motor current signature analysis (MCSA). The d -axis is excited with a direct-current+alternating-current signal, and the variation in the inductance pattern due to the change in the degree of magnetic saturation caused by demagnetization or eccentricity is observed for fault detection. An experimental study on a 7.5-kW PMSM verifies that demagnetization and eccentricity can be detected and classified independent of the load with high sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Permanent-magnet-assisted salient-pole synchronous machines (PMa-SMs) are a new type of salient-pole synchronous machines that has PMs between the adjacent pole shoes. The PMs have the ability to improve the output power and the terminal voltage. In this paper, a simple magnetic circuit of PMa-SMs is presented. Using the magnetic circuit, the electric and magnetic basic characteristics of PMa-SMs are calculated. The results are compared with the results by measurements and finite-element analysis (FEA). They have shown that the magnetic circuit calculates the characteristics of PMa-SMs with satisfactory accuracy and that the computational time of the magnetic circuit is much smaller than that of FEA. Influence of the pole-shoe magnetic reluctances on the calculation accuracy by the magnetic circuit is also discussed, and some guidelines to enhance the accuracy have been presented. Industry-proven field-weakening solutions for nonsalient-pole permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives are presented in this paper. The core algorithm relies on direct symbolic equations. The equations take into account the stator resistance and reveal its effect on overall algorithm quality. They establish a foundation for an offline calculated lookup table which secures effective d-axis current reference over entire field-weakening region. The table has been proven on its own and in combination with a PI compensator. Usage recommendations are given in this paper. Functionality of the proposed solutions has been investigated theoretically and in practice. The investigation has been carried out in the presence of motor magnetic saturation and parameter tolerance, taking into account the change of operating temperature. The interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is usually applied to the traction motor in the hybrid electric vehicle and the electric vehicle due to its high-power density and wide speed range. In this paper, the IPMSM with concentrated winding for a 110 cc electric motorcycle is introduced. Its design was improved for high efficiency and a wide speed operation range. The output characteristics were also analyzed according to the partial magnetic saturation of the shoe and web in many variables. Because partial magnetic saturation affects the harmonics and the eddy current loss of the permanent magnet, it was confirmed that the output characteristics of the motor significantly changed. As a result, the new shape and the design parameters for which the partial magnetic saturation was considered were obtained. The modeling of electrical machines by equivalent circuits requires an appropriate calculation of inductance values. The energy-perturbation and flux-linkage methods are extremely used to determine inductance values of electrical machines from two-dimensional finite element solutions. Both methods are numerically equivalent and give approximately the same values of inductance for axi-symmetric structures. However, the flux-linkage method requires less computation resources and is numerically more robust than the energy perturbation method. Hence, the flux linkage approach is chosen, for two-dimensional inductance calculation of a three phase tubular linear PM synchronous actuator. In this paper, the total flux in the (a,b,c) frame work are obtained from FE method and therefore include saturation and cross-couplings. The resulting inductance values are computed for different current densities and over one pole pitch and then stored on 3D Matlab functions to be used in the dynamical actuator modeling. This paper presents a simple mathematical model for the steady-state analysis of a permanent-magnet-assisted salient-pole synchronous generator (PMa-SG). The PMa-SG is a new type of salient-pole SG that has PMs between the adjacent pole shoes. The developed model takes into account the magnetic saturation and core loss, and enables quantitative predictions of load characteristics from the no-load test data. A method is proposed for predicting the flux-weakening performance of permanent-magnet (PM) brushless ac machines accounting for skew and d-q axis cross-coupling. The method is based on a d-q-axis flux-linkage model, a hybrid 2-D finite-element (FE)-analytical method being used to predict the d-and q-axis inductances. However, it only requires 2-D FE analysis of the magnetic field distribution over a cross section of the machine. The developed method is used to predict the torque-speed characteristic of an interior PM brushless ac machine with one stator slot-pitch skew. The precise estimation of position is an essential concern for the control of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). Given the prominent role of position, the promising sensorless control approach for an SRM drive should be capable of providing accurate position. An inductance-based approach has been widely applied in the position estimation. However, the estimated accuracy suffers from the magnetic saturation effect, resulting in the poor performance of sensorless operation. This paper presents a reversible synchronization of commutation with the corresponding rotor position for SRM. With the consideration of magnetic saturation, the proposed approach is taken as a suitable candidate and plays an essential role in accommodating the requirement of optimal control. The relationship between a typical inductance position and magnetic circuit saturation is investigated. The instant of the intersections is sensed by comparing the instantaneous inductance of adjacent phases. Thus, the predicted position is obtained with the information of the special point and the calculated average speed. Compared with other existing methods, the proposed approach has the certain advantages, such as the ability to update the estimated speed and position six times per electrical period, which guarantees the estimated accuracy. The proposed approach is also valid even when the motor is operated at an acceleration state and heavy load operation. In addition, the requirement of the educated inductance structure is not unnecessary, less memory space is needed in the chip, and the accumulated error is eliminated. The simulation and experimental findings demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of the proposed position estimation approach with carrying out the inertial operation, load mutation, and high-speed test.
