In ultra‐high speed (UHS) motor applications, full SIC two‐level (2L) inverters with high switching frequencies are generally used due to their lower cost. However, even with the usage of all WBG power devices, high‐frequency hard‐switched 2L inverters still do not achieve optimal efficiency characteristics. As a result, in order to simultaneously reduce the switching frequency and enhance overall efficiency, recently three‐level (3L) topologies have emerged as a promising solution. Nevertheless, to fully meet the requirements of UHS applications, the switching frequency of 3L inverters should be increased beyond 30 kHz, which necessitates the usage of all SIC power devices. This, in turn, leads to a potential drawback where the cost of the drive system may become prohibitively high due to the requirement of all SIC switches. To address this issue and reduce the cost of a full SIC 3L inverter, a new 3L simplified sparse NPC (SSNPC) topology is proposed in this work. The operational principle of this topology, its distinctive control features, and the advantages it offers specifically for UHS applications are presented. Additionally, to further increase the efficiency and reduce the influence of dead time at low speeds, a new switching sequence is introduced. Constant switching frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes introduce harmonics in the inverter's output voltage and current which are concentrated at frequencies close to the switching frequency and its multiples. This peaking in the current and voltage harmonic spectrum results in vibration and acoustic noise in AC motor drives. One way to alleviate these problems is by spreading the harmonic spectrum and reducing the magnitude of dominant harmonic components using variable switching frequency schemes. The key objective of this paper is to introduce a novel trapezoidal variation based variable frequency PWM switching strategy to spread out the harmonic spectrum, with reduced current THD even during no-load low-speed operation. This paper also proposes a modified switched DC cell inverter to achieve DC voltage control to enhance the THD reduction. The presented strategy achieves a maximum of 42.2 % reduction in low-speed THD compared to linear sub-cycle period variable frequency PWM, a 46 % reduction in dominant harmonics compared to conventional space vector PWM, and a dispersion index of 1.61, demonstrating its competency as a promising variable switching frequency scheme. The suggested techniques are simulated using MATLAB/Simulink on a vector-controlled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive and are validated experimentally on a 1.07 kW PMSM drive with a WAVECT-FPGA controller. To solve the problems mechanically caused by parallel direct‐drive permanent magnet motors (DD‐PMSM). This paper proposes a concave‐core stator direct‐drive permanent magnet motor (CCSDD‐PMSM) structure. In this study, an auxiliary yoke structure is proposed to optimise the magnetic circuit and analyse the cogging torque to achieve the minimum detent force. Based on the unit motor and combined with the magnetomotive force to analyse the symmetry of different winding distributions, the stability characteristics of the motor are studied. The magnetic field distribution of the motor load air gap is calculated using the finite element method. The contribution of different spatial order harmonics to the motor output torque is calculated using the Maxwell tensor method. The torque calculation expression of the CCSDD‐PMSM is given. The position sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), with its simple structure, is applied in the aerospace field with high reliability requirements. To drive PMSM safely, the three‐phase current measured from the driver needs to be isolated for the closed‐loop control. And then, the accuracy current measurement is crucial for achieving optimal motor performance. In the paper, current transformer (CT) with centre taps is employed to isolate and measure the high‐frequency current of the inverter switch. Additionally, an algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the switch current into the low‐frequency phase current. Subsequently, the measuring method and the algorithm are applied to an inverter platform, which drives a 100W PMSM. Finally, the reconstructed phase current waveform is compared with the measured phase current waveform, and the experimental results show that the above method is effective and feasible. In this paper, an extended-horizon predictive torque control (PTC) method is proposed with computationally efficient implementation. Predictive control with extended horizon brings important advantages compared to single-horizon methods, such as better steady-state performance, reduced current THD, and lower ripples in torque and stator flux. However, the computational burden is a serious obstacle because the required calculations rise exponentially with the extension of the prediction horizon. This is due to a high number of candidate voltage vectors and also predicting the values of several machine variables for these vectors. Different approaches are employed in this work to make the control method computationally tractable. A voltage vector reduction technique is utilised that significantly decreases the total number of enumerated vectors. Moreover, the stator current prediction is eliminated in the proposed method, based on the inherent features of the PMSM. The suppression of torque ripples in an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is essential to improve its efficiency and responsiveness. Here, we report on the development of an electromagnetic energy harvester incorporated into an IPMSM to suppress its torque ripples. The proposed harvester is driven to oscillations by the speed ripple of the AC motor. We derived the motion and circuit equations for the motor and the harvester according to Euler–Lagrange equations. We discussed the principle of electrical power generation and used MATLAB/Simulink numerical simulations to investigate the dynamic behavior of the proposed harvester. Our findings revealed that the active Coriolis force unnecessarily reduces the motor's original torque, leading to unsuccessful power generation. Nevertheless, our results demonstrated that the reactive Coriolis force successfully suppresses the motor torque ripple. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The switched reluctance motor (SRM) benefits from its magnet-free nature, robust construction, low cost, flexible controls, and the ability to operate in harsh environments such as high temperatures and high pressure. It has received increasing attention for all-electric or multi-electric aircraft systems and electric vehicles (EVs) as compared with permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and other AC motors in some required high reliability and fault tolerance applications. However, the SRM is prone to considerable wind resistance due to the convex pole structure of the rotor during high-speed rotation, high torque ripple, and also vibration noise. Thus, it is currently a trending topic to develop special SRMs, tailored with high reliability and fault tolerance. Recent research demonstrates several promising feasible solutions to reduce torque ripples and enhance torque density and power factors, including changing topology of SRM, using advanced control methods, as well as different winding configurations. Among these options, the segmented switched reluctance motor (SSRM), as a deformation of the conventional topology, is shown to be capable of effectively optimizing the torque performance. Motivated by this advance, this paper aims to present a comprehensive literature review on the SSRM, first illustrating the development of the topology of the SRM, then providing a description as well as a classification according to the topology of the SSRM. In particular, we focus on the evolution of various kinds of segmental topology and improvement measures. Then, we discuss the performance, advantages, and disadvantages of various types of structures in terms of their electromagnetic aspects and their applications. Eventually, several promising future trends and application prospects of the SSRM are prospected, with the aim of shedding light on further research. In sum, the key contribution of this paper is to provide a valuable basis for detailed analyses of the structure and electromagnetic design of the SSRM that are expected to benefit future research. In this paper, a calculation method is proposed for the radial suspension force of a bearingless motor with a surface‐mounted permanent magnet (SPM) rotor, a consequent‐pole permanent magnet (CPM) rotor, and a homopolar permanent rotor (HPM). The radial suspension forces are calculated mathematically and analytically using the airgap flux density. It was confirmed that the proposed radial force equations are practical to calculate the suspension force based on the airgap flux density. The CPM bearingless motor and bearingless AC HPM have salient pole rotors that interact with the 2‐pole Magnetomotive force (MMF) to generate 6‐ and 10‐pole components. As a result, the radial suspension force of the CPM bearingless motor is generated by 8‐ and 6‐pole, and 8‐ and 10‐pole magnetic flux, whereas the bearingless AC HPM produces the radial suspension force by DC and 2‐pole components. The shaft torque, the suspension force, and efficiency were also compared for SPM, CPM bearingless motors, and bearingless AC HPM. Consequently, the torque value of the CPM bearingless motor is quite close to SPM bearingless motor. Moreover, the suspension force of the CPM bearingless motor is quite close to bearingless AC HPM. Currently, AC motors are a key element of industrial and commercial drive systems. During normal operation, the machines may become damaged, which may pose a threat to the users. Therefore, it is important to develop a fault detection method that allows for the detection of a fault at an early stage. Among the currently used diagnostic systems, applications based on deep neural structures are dynamically developed. Despite many examples of applications of deep learning methods, there are no formal rules for selecting the network structure and parameters of the training process. Such methods would make it possible to shorten the implementation process of deep networks in diagnostic systems of AC machines. The article presents a detailed analysis of the influence of deep convolutional network hyperparameters and training procedures on the precision of the interturn short-circuits detection system. The studies take into account the direct analysis of phase currents through the convolutional network for induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors. This paper presents a comparison of an AC radial flux interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor with the distributed winding (DW) and concentrated winding (CW). From time to time, manufacturers of electric vehicles change the design of electric motors, such changes may include changing the DW into CW and vice versa. A change to the winding in a radial permanent magnet synchronous motor may lead to a change in motor parameters during motor operation and /or change in the distribution of the magnetic field and thermal circuit of the electrical machine. The electromagnetic analysis, efficiency map, mechanical stress, and thermal analysis of the machine with the DW and CW are presented in this paper. This article describes the advantages and disadvantages of selected stator winding designs and helps understand manufacturers' designers how the DW and CW play a key role in achieving the designed motor's operational parameters such as continuous performance. Analyzing the performance of both machines will help identify their advantages and disadvantages with regard to thermal phenomena, magnetic field and operational parameters of the presented IPM prototypes. Both prototypes are based on commonly used topologies such as 12/8 (slot/pole) and 30/8 (slot/pole) IPM motors consisting of magnets arranged in a V-shape. The AC IPM motor was designed for an 80 kW propulsion system to achieve 170 N·m at a base speed of 4 500 rpm. Modern CAD tools are utilized throughout the numerical computations based on 2-D finite element methods. Selected test data are used to verify and validate the accuracy of finite element models. The interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has a structure, in which a permanent magnet is inserted inside the rotor and cogging torque is generated in its structure. To solve this problem, various methods for reducing the cogging torque are being studied. The first method is to reduce the cogging torque by increasing the air-gap length by applying tapering to the rotor or stator core. However, in case of reducing the cogging torque above a certain level, the tapering application method may cause a decrease in output because the position and shape of the permanent magnet are restricted. The second method is to apply skew to the stator or rotor. This is the most reliable way to reduce the cogging torque, but the magnetization rate of the permanent magnet is low, so the manufacturability is low. In this article, we describe a rotor with rotational tapering that fuses the advantages of tapering and skew and offsets the disadvantages. The winding segmented permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (WS-PMLSM) generally adopts three-phase windings and the length of the segment is greater than that of the passive mover. This article proposes an innovative design for the module motor, using two-phase integrated single-layer concentric distributed windings, no half-filled slots, and the influence of the pulsating magnetic field generated by the segmented windings is negligible. By analyzing the transition of the segment winding, a variable parameter mathematical model is established, and proportional resonance (PR) control is introduced to eliminate the influence of parameter changes on the model. Meanwhile, the concept of a multiphase motor is introduced for pass-through segment control, with the help of the double $\alpha $ – $\beta $ coordinate transformation method, a new effective coil selection and switching algorithms is constructed, and the thrust forces for the pass-through section are obtained. In the paper an original approach to efficiency map optimal synthesis is presented. A permanent magnet motor, working as controlled AC motor of synchronous type (PMSM), is selected as a case study. The first target of this research is to derive a lumped-parameter model of the motor (low-fidelity model), validated by magnetic field analysis (high-fidelity model). In turn, the end target is these two models application in a cost-effective optimisation procedures, where the goal is to identify the motor geometry maximizing the map area which is encompassed by a prescribed value for the motor efficiency. Unavoidably, the controlsystem of any permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is subjected to perturbations, e.g., motor nonidealities and inverter nonlinearities. To reject these perturbations, a new super-twisting (ST) control variant, called speed adaptive super-twisting (S-AST) control, is proposed in this paper. In the S-AST control, a proportional-integral (PI) and a ST controllers are merged using an adaptive law that is based on the motor speed measurement. This is done to reduce the chattering problems that the standard ST control presents. In addition, a mathematical design for the S-AST control is proposed, where the relationship between the chattering amplitude, the switching frequency and the system perturbations is shown. The main contribution in this paper is the application of the S-AST controller to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THDi) of the PMSM currents. By comparing the S-AST control against PI control, the THDi is reduced from 9.9% to 1.27%, in simulation, and the THDi is reduced from 22.79% to 1.56%, experimentally. AC motor drives fed from current-controlled power electronic converters are popular on account of their superior steady-state and transient performance. Hysteresis control is a popular current control technique, which needs modifications to compensate for its demerits. Appraisal of current error as a space phasor for implementing the hysteresis controller is one such modification. Current error space phasor (CESP)-based hysteresis controller for voltage source inverters-fed motor drives are capable of achieving superior dynamic performance. With the modified hysteresis current controller, the drive operates at a constant switching frequency and ensures an optimal switching vector selection. This article presents the analysis of CESP for a space vector-modulated indirect matrix converter (IMC). The modified algorithm for space vector modulation of IMC accommodates for the variations in dc-link voltage since CESP is input voltage dependent. The boundary for the hysteresis current controller is calculated from the computed values of CESP. The time-varying nature of the hysteresis boundary ensures a constant switching frequency operation for IMC. Thus, a CESP-based hysteresis controller is proposed for the vector control of the IMC-fed permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive. This letter addresses experimental validation of the reduced-order natural speed observer design for position sensorless drive with nonsalient permanent magnet synchronous motor. The natural speed observer and the active flux estimator are connected in a cascaded fashion, which results in a simple sensorless algorithm that needs only to tune one bandwidth parameter for flux estimation and one bandwidth parameter for speed observation. Experimental results of high speed reversal test, zero speed stopping test, and slow speed reversal test are included, where the practice of applying nonzero $d$ -axis current at zero speed has shown to be effective for loaded zero speed stopping test, but it causes zero-speed locked-up at slow speed reversal with acceleration rate of $\rm \text{50}\,r/\text{min}/s$. Four remedies are compared to improve the slow speed reversal test and the proposed method gives almost ramp actual speed waveform, nondiverging $q$ -axis current and smooth transition in position waveform during slow zero speed crossing. A new dynamic expression of the active flux is proposed and with the aid of the active flux concept, the proposed sensorless algorithm is also applicable to various types of ac motors. High‐speed permanent magnetic machine (HSPMM) is attracting more attention due to its high power density, compact size, small rotating inertia, and rapid response capability. However, the design of the HSPMM rotor is a non‐linear, multi‐physics coupled process that makes it difficult to build an accurate mathematical model for optimisation. This study proposes a multi‐objective optimisation method based on the multi‐physics surrogate model (MPSM). This method uses an MPSM to replace the finite element model (FEM) for optimisation, which can effectively solve the problem of non‐convergence and time consumption of the traditional FEM in the optimisation process. Finally, a 1.1 MW, 18,000 r/min HSPMM is produced and related experiments are carried out; the feasibility of the method proposed in this study for HSPMM optimisation is verified. This article presents the design and development of the permanent capacitor split-phase ceiling fan motor with enhanced air delivery per unit power consumption. An existing single-phase induction motor ceiling fan is taken as a reference, and experimental performance is validated against finite element analysis (FEA). One factor at a time or monothetic analysis for existing lamination with turns in both the windings, a permanent capacitor connected in series with the auxiliary winding, an air gap length, stack length as parameters, and different loading is carried out in detail. Design modifications are proposed in stator lamination, and rigorous series of simulations are carried out. Two new motors are designed and prototyped for performance improvement, keeping the outer diameter of the motor same as an existing motor. The overall saturation of the motor is reduced by modifying the slot profile of the winding slots and increasing the overall volume of the motor. The designed motors are analyzed using FEA, and prototypes are tested for electrical performance and air delivery as per IS 374 standard. Both the results of prototypes show significant improvement in the power consumption and the air delivery with blades of an existing fan justifying the commercial viability of the improved design. The multifunctional converter system (MFCS) is a special topology of three-phase ac motor drives, which inherently integrates a dc-voltage regulation function. First, in order to explain the mechanism of the MFCS, an average model is derived in this article. An equivalent circuit is developed, which explicitly reveals that the MFCS is equivalent to a cascaded dc/dc converter-dc motor drive system. Second, the inverter's mean duty cycle is identified as an independent control degree of freedom for the dc-bus voltage. Then, the influence of pulsewidth modulation (PWM) on the dc-bus voltage is studied. It concludes that space vector PWM is invalid for the MFCS. To address this problem, the zero-sequence voltage injection PWM (ZSVIPWM) is proposed and actually sinusoidal PWM is a special case of the ZSVIPWM. Third, an overall control strategy is proposed for the MFCS, which includes not only the vector control for the motor but also a closed-loop control for the dc-bus voltage. Finally, comparative experiments with the standard topology are carried out on a permanent magnet synchronous machine prototype to verify these theoretical analyses and the control strategy. Finite control set model predictive torque and flux control of ac motor drives commonly selects optimum inverter switching states through a cost function with a required weighting factor. The weighting factor should be well-tuned in accordance with the motor specifications and operating points. Additionally, the control performance of the drive is degraded under the parametric uncertainties. In this article, a predictive torque and flux control method is proposed for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor drives without a cost function. As a result, the tuning of the weighting factor is avoided. Besides, an estimation scheme based on a data-driven model is adopted, which enhances the robustness of the drive against parametric uncertainties. Instead of directly using the motor parameters, the input and output data of the control system, i.e., voltage and current, are used for estimating three new coefficients employed in the predictions. The performance of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor drive under the proposed control method is evaluated and compared with those under the conventional predictive torque control method and a recently developed predictive torque control method without a weighting factor. High‐frequency audible noise and high‐frequency vibrations (HFVs) in electrical vehicles are primarily caused by vibrations and ripples generated in the traction motor. The appositeness of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) has been boosting in traction applications due to their high energy density, compact size and high torque to weight ratio. A novel and step‐by‐step design of medium power, high speed, surface PMSM, suitable for e‐bus or e‐truck applications, with suppressed torque ripples, is presented. Initially, a conventional machine design approach has been used to design 100 kW PMSM. In the next step, the design has been ameliorated by making it a fractional slot winding machine to suppress the winding harmonics. Finally, the effect of the permanent magnet embrace size on the torque ripple has been investigated. A nonlinear relationship between the torque ripple and PMSM magnetic embrace has been developed. The developed relationship has been validated in the finite element model of the machine. Gradient‐based nonlinear sequential programming has been used to find out the optimum magnetic embrace for the minimised torque ripple. The effectiveness of the optimised design has been revalidated in the FE software. Minimization or elimination of cogging torque is a significant issue in permanent magnet (PM) motor design process. There are some design techniques to reduce or eliminate this unwanted torque components in PM motors. This paper focuses on two different design techniques, varying magnet pole-arc and step-skew, to reduce cogging torque component in radial flux PM synchronous motors. Different design points which consider pulsating torque components and back-EMF harmonics are obtained via finite element analysis (FEA) for a low power industrial PM motor. With the increasing proliferation of variable speed drive, the demand for the more reliable drive is also on the rise. Despite the growing interest on more advanced motors like permanent magnet and flux switching motors, three-phase induction motors (3ph-IMs) are still the main workhorse in the industry and hence the fault-tolerant control of these motor drives remains an interesting and important topic. In this paper, a simple fault-tolerant field-oriented control technique for 3ph-IMs is presented. It is shown that by injecting zero-sequence compensation voltage in a feedforward manner, open-circuit faults can be effectively tolerated. Compared to the previous feedforward fault-tolerant control methods, the proposed approach does not require the knowledge of the magnetizing inductance, which is tricky to be obtained in induction motors. Furthermore, the unified feedforward approach allows the same control structure to be used for different fault-tolerant 3ph-IMs drive topologies, with minor modifications to the feedforward terms. In addition, the effect of inverter non-idealities on the performance of the proposed control method is also highlighted and addressed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified using MATLAB simulation and further validated using experimental tests. This paper proposes a power controller used for three-phase inverters with small dc-link capacitors fed by a single-phase diode rectifier. The effect of the reactive power was investigated based on a power flow analysis between a dc-link and three-phase inverter. These results enable the development of a direct active/reactive power controller in discrete time instead of adopting a classical proportional-integral (PI)-type current regulator, which directly leverages the total power flow of the system. A suitable reactive power selection method was presented to improve the overall system efficiency. The command voltage vector at each discrete time step can be simply and intuitively determined by an inverter power without requiring motor current-regulating PI gains and additional control functions. The proposed controller regulates an average motor velocity/airgap torque while simultaneously shaping a grid-side current with a high power factor and low harmonics to meet IEC61000-3-2 requirements. Integral-slot electrical machines require modifications and optimization of both stator and rotor to maximize the machine performance. In addition, sub-harmonics in magneto-motive force distributions is an important issue in motors with fractional-slot concentrated windings. These additional sub- and super-harmonics increase iron losses, which becomes an even bigger challenge in high speed/frequency applications. A permanent-magnet (PM) motor with unbalanced winding (UBW) and unconventional slot numbers is a good option for applications that require smooth torque output and low back electromotive force voltage harmonics. In this paper, different winding configurations and displacements of an unconventional nine-phase PM motor with both balanced fractional-slot winding and UBW structures have been investigated. The focus has been on 117-slot with 12-pole (for the balanced winding motor) and 36-pole (for the UBW motor) combinations. Motor prototypes with UBW configurations have been manufactured. The finite-element analyses results have been validated with experimental results and it is shown that such unconventional slot/pole combinations can be a good option for some high-power applications. A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive based on a novel four-switch inverter is investigated in this work. No dead-time insertion/compensation is needed for the inverter because its upper and lower power devices will not shoot through. Two space vector pulsewidth modulation approaches for the four-switch inverter are developed that enable the suppression of the zero sequence voltage/current. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify that the PMSM can be effectively controlled with the novel four-switch inverter, and the system has good dynamic and static performance. In this paper, the influence of saturation and cross-coupling effects on the copper loss minimization for synchronous machines with strong saliencies, especially the permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance machines and reluctance synchronous machines are analyzed. It is shown that state-of-the-art methods for saturation consideration through the absolute inductances fail for these machines. A novel method for maximum torque per ampere estimation, which includes the consideration of these effects through the use of differential inductances, is proposed and its effectiveness is shown through finite-element analysis and experiments. In this paper, an improved predictive torque control without weighting factor is proposed for a voltage source inverter-permanent magnet synchronous motor drive system, which possesses good control performance of torque and stator flux. By investigating the relationship among torque, the reference stator flux amplitude, and the phase angle of the stator flux, the reference stator flux vector is constructed. Then, the reference voltage vector is calculated by the reference stator flux vector based on the delay compensation and the deadbeat control. The extended control set is designed and two generalized base vectors that require further screening are determined based on the position of the reference voltage vector to improve the calculation efficiency. And the duty ratios used for the generalized base vectors are calculated, according to the geometric relations between the generalized base vectors and the reference voltage vector. Finally, by the duty cycle control between two generalized base vectors and between each generalized base vector and zero vector, the candidate vectors are gained and substituted into the cost function only with the flux vector error term. This paper investigates the use of the Taguchi method for the design of line-start permanent magnet synchronous motors (LS-PMSMs). To address the inherent limitation of the Taguchi method in solving multiresponse optimization problems, an improved regression rate methodology and a weighted factor multiobjective technique are incorporated to form a Taguchi method based multiobjective design framework. To validate the proposed method, a prototype machine has been designed, constructed, and experimentally evaluated. Reliable and safe operation of electric motors in the industry is highly desirable. Accurate modelling is the first step in developing a diagnostic tool for different types of failures. This study presents a generalised dq-model for interior-mount line start permanent magnet synchronous motors under asymmetrical stator phase's windings. The presented dq-model has been derived using winding theorem. Implementation and simulation of the derived dq-model has been done using MATLAB/ SIMULINK software. For validation purposes, interior-mount line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM) under this fault condition is implemented using the JMAGTM-finite-element-based software. The performance of a 1-hp interior-mount LSPMSM motor under different loading levels and stator winding asymmetric conditions has been investigated using the simulated MATLAB and JMAG models. Simulation results of MATLAB and JMAG are in very good agreement and show that under asymmetrical stator winding condition, oscillations are obvious in the torque characteristics of the motor. In addition, the torque experience high oscillations at a steady state due to the asymmetry between stator phases. Finally, investigating torque frequency spectrum showed that they can be good signatures in diagnosing asymmetrical stator winding faults in interior-mount LSPMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous motors are nowadays an attractive solution in automotive applications due to their advantages in terms of high performance and manufacturing simplicity. Among the different topologies, the spoke type is an effective configuration when high torque density is required. On the other hand, the motor performance are heavily related to the selected slot-pole combination. This choice is critical in demanding automotive applications, such as electric power steering (EPS) systems, where high constraints in terms of torque density, torque quality, flux weakening performance, and noise/vibration/harshness are requested. This paper deals with the design and analysis of eight optimal slot/pole combinations FSCW IPM spoke type EPS motors. Two different low cost heavy rare earths free PM typologies, ferrite and hot-pressed NdFeB, are considered. A design and optimization procedure based upon the finite element analysis is presented. The impact of the magnetic properties and the slot/pole combination on the optimal motor dimensions, torque density, and motor cost is discussed. Cogging torque, torque ripple, electromechanical performance, and the stator deformation of the machines are evaluated, and the results are compared, highlighting the advantages and the differences among the solutions. Digital current controllers have the key impact on the performance of grid-side converters and ac drives. The voltage disturbances are commonly suppressed by enhancing the controller with an inner active resistance feedback. In cases where the switching noise and parasitic oscillations introduce sampling errors, conventional sampling is replaced by the oversampling-based error-free feedback acquisition which derives the average of the measured currents over the past switching period. The time delay introduced into the feedback path creates difficulties in designing the current controller with the active resistance. In this paper, we introduce a novel structure of the current controller, which includes the error-free sampling and the active resistance feedback. Devised structure improves the disturbance rejection by extending the range of permissible values of the active resistance. Controller structure is based on the internal model principles, and it maintains the input step response unaffected. It was recently demonstrated that the synchronous reluctance motor is well suited for electric as well as for hybrid electric vehicles. This paper deeply investigates the capabilities of a synchronous reluctance motor and compares them with those of a permanent-magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor, according to the typical requirement of a traction application. A proper rotor design is necessary. The average torque is due to the rotor anisotropy. The permeance difference between the direct- and the quadrature-axis is achieved by means of a high number of flux barriers. The position of the flux barrier ends and proper rotor asymmetries are chosen so as to reduce the torque ripple, mainly due to the slot harmonics. The impact of the rotor design on the motor performance is presented deeply, showing several simulation and experimental results, carried out on synchronous reluctance motors with different rotor geometries. Permanent magnets can be inset in the flux barriers to assist the synchronous reluctance motor improving its capabilities, but avoiding to use rare-earth permanent magnets. The main advantages of the permanent magnet assistance is an increase of the main torque density and of the power factor. They are evaluated experimentally. However, the drawback of adopting permanent magnets is the possible demagnetization of the magnets themselves. Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have higher torque and superior output power per volume than other types of AC motors. They are commonly used for applications that require a large output power and a wide range of speed. For precise control of PMSMs, knowing the accurate position of the rotor is essential, and normally position sensors such as a resolver or an encoder are employed. On the other hand, the position sensors make the driving system expensive and unstable if the attached sensor malfunctions. Therefore, sensorless algorithms are widely researched nowadays, to reduce the cost and cope with sensor failure. This paper proposes a sensorless algorithm that can be applied to a wide range of speed. The proposed method features a robust operation at low-speed as well as high-speed ranges by employing a gain adjustment scheme and intermittent voltage pulse injection method. In the proposed scheme the position estimation gain is tuned by a closed loop manner to have stable operation in tough driving environment. This paper assesses the post-demagnetization performance of interior permanent magnet (IPM) ac machines by employing the more accurate recoil line approach based on a 2-D transient finite-element analysis (FEA). The method predicts continuous demagnetization of each magnet element undergoing partial demagnetization and evaluates the machine behavior after an event of short-circuit faults across its terminals. Along with the short-circuit faults, a failure in a drive controller or a position sensor, which may lead to a reverse voltage across the machine terminals that can eventually be more fatal and can cause significant reduction in the performance due to high levels of demagnetization, is analyzed as the worst case scenario. The FE predicted post-demagnetization performance is validated by experimental measurements in which a six-phase IPM machine designed for electric vehicle traction is allowed to lose its synchronization with the inverter when forced to operate on a torque–speed envelope, which is way beyond the drive voltage setting. Servo motor drives generally consist of current, velocity, and position control loops. Tuning these controllers to achieve satisfactory and consistent dynamic responses is crucial. In this paper, a parameter identification and autotuning scheme for permanent-magnet ac servo motor drives is presented. Motor electrical parameters such as resistance and inductances were identified first for current control loop tuning. The torque constant and mechanical parameters were then identified for velocity and position loop tuning. The experimental results verified that the proposed scheme can estimate parameters accurately and within a short time. Alternating-current motor drive systems consume the majority of global electricity, but most of them are still not efficient enough. This paper proposes a complete solution to the efficiency enhancement of general induction motor (IM) drive systems with the least cost and a high reliability. On the motor side, the squirrel-cage rotors of IMs are replaced with optimally designed interior permanent-magnet (PM) rotors without damping windings; meanwhile, other assemblies remained unchanged. Stators with both wye- and delta-connected windings are investigated, and super premium efficiency (IE4) is achieved on all the remanufactured motors in this paper. On the drive side, the maximum efficiency per ampere algorithm is realized based on the position-sensorless control to better exert the motor efficiency and reduce the system cost. For applications where an original IM is used under a grid drive, this paper safely switches the remanufactured interior PM synchronous motors from an inverter to the grid drive. A total of seven prototypes with different rated powers and velocities are remanufactured, and various experiments are provided as the verifications of the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed solution. A novel control algorithm devoted to remove undesired low-order current harmonics in AC motor drives is presented in this article. The proposed control algorithm combines a suitable multiple reference frame synchronous harmonic estimator and multiple reference frame vector control implementation to suppress the undesired harmonics contained in the motor stator currents. This control technique can handle positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence sets, keeping a satisfying dynamic behavior. This paper describes a $d$– $q$-axis model of synchronous permanent-magnet machines at high frequency. Both the inductive and resistive saliencies are taken into account, and the model is suitable for investigating the self-sensing capability of the machines. It is proved that the high-frequency machine response can be described by means of three complex parameters, which form a symmetrical matrix. It is also shown that the high-frequency resistances between the $d$- and $q$-axes exist, and they may assume a negative value. The direct torque control (DTC) technique of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has received increasing attention due to its simplicity and robust dynamic response compared with other control techniques. The classical switching table based DTC presents large flux, torque ripples and more mechanical vibrations in the motor. Several studies have been reported in the literature on classical DTC. However, the studies that actually discuss or evaluate the classical DTC are limited. This paper proposes, an alternative DTC method/switching table for PMSM, to reduce flux and torque ripples as well as mechanical vibrations. This is achieved by a simple modification in the classical DTC structure, by eliminating the two level inverter available in the classical DTC and replacing it with a three level neutral point clamped inverter. To further improve the performance of the proposed DTC, the available 27 voltage vectors are allowed to form different groups of voltage vectors such as Large - Zero, Medium - Zero and Small - Zero. Based on these groups, a new switching table is proposed. The proposed DTC is compared with the classical DTC and existing literature from the aspects of theory analysis and computer simulations. It can be observed that the proposed technique can significantly reduce the flux, torque ripples, and mechanical vibrations and improves the quality of current waveform compared with traditional and existing methods. This paper deals with the direct torque control (DTC) of PMBLDC motor using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the performance of the DTC scheme. Though the conventional controllers are commonly used in practice, they have failed to perform satisfactorily under nonlinear conditions and parameter variations. In the proposed work, an AI based control scheme is introduced to control the torque and the flux linkage angle of the DTC scheme. Torque error and flux linkage angle of the DTC scheme are fuzzified and it is auto tuned by GA to improve the dynamic characteristic. This paper presents a new topology of parallel hybrid excitation machine (PHEM), which integrates permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and variable-reluctance machine, namely, doubly salient electromagnetic machine (DSEM), and provides a solution to better field-regulating capability. The configuration and the operation principle of the proposed PHEM are introduced. The combination criterion and design consideration are discussed. The performances of the two axial sections (PMSM and DSEM) are studied by 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA), respectively, to achieve reasonable integration. The field and voltage regulation capability of the PHEM is further investigated by 3-D FEA. A prototype PHEM is designed, manufactured, and tested. The measured results verify structural validity and finite-element predictions. The loss is predicted, and the measurement of short-circuit current illustrates the capacity of deexcitation at fault. The results confirm that the PHEM achieves effective power superposition of two different brushless machines. The control algorithms of electrical machine drives rely on models that are classically valid for signals in low-frequency ranges versus the current sampling frequency and the range of eddy currents. Some position self-sensing methods, which are used in motion-sensorless controls, are based on the injection of high-frequency signals, for which the model needs to be refined, taking the discretization and the eddy-current effects into account. In this paper, we introduce different circuit models for ac permanent-magnet machines, which are valid from low- to high-frequency spectra, for the purpose of analysis. The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a highly efficient energy saving machine. Due to its simple structural characteristics, good heat radiation capability, and high efficiency, PMSMs are gradually replacing AC induction motors in many industrial applications. The PMSM has a nonlinear system and lies on parameters that differ over time with complex high-class dynamics. To achieve the excessive performance operation of a PMSM, it essentially needs a speed controller for providing accurate speed tracking, slight overshoot, and robust disturbance repulsion. Therefore, this article provides an overview of different robust control techniques for PMSMs and reviews the implementation of a speed controller. In view of the uncertainty factors, such as parameter perturbation and load disturbance, the H∞ robust control strategy is mainly reviewed based on the traditional control techniques, i.e., robust H∞ sliding mode controller (SMC), and H∞ robust current controller based on Hamilton–Jacobi Inequality (HJI) theory.
