Abstract

In this work agricultural waste-based coconut biomass and compressed agricultural waste derived from brown briquette were used for generation of gas in a downdraft gasifier. Its subsequent combustion takes place in a modified diesel engine using rice bran oil (RiOME) biodiesel injected in bi-fuel mode. For the injected pilot fuel, producer gas operation with coconut biomass derived fuel has improved liquid fuel saving. Downdraft gasifier was integrated with four stroke DI water cooled 5.2 kW CI engine at 1500 rpm speed. Experimentation results showed that for the gasifier- engine system coconut biomass derived gas with diesel based dual fuel operation results in 9.05% higher BTE. RiOME-producer gas (CNS) operation showed 16.1% decrease in EGT and 12.1% reduction in NOx emission compared to diesel based dual fuel operation. NOx emissions for the RiOME based engine operation were found to be lower than the diesel based operation. However, the smoke, HC and CO emissions were higher. Diesel fuel saving about 56% was achieved by diesel and producer gas (CNS) dual fuel operation and 100% biofuel utilization in RiOME -producer gas bi-fuel mode of operation was achieved. Abstract

In this present work, performance and emission levels have been investigated using renewable and sustainable fuels derived from different agricultural residues. For the same injected pilot fuel, producer gas operation with redgram stalk (RGS) derived fuel provided improved liquid fuel saving. Downdraft gasifier was integrated with 4 stroke direct injection water cooled 5.2 kW CI engine at 1500 rpm and run under dual fuel mode using diesel/honge oil methyl ester (HOME)-producer gas. Experimental investigation showed that the gasifier-engine system with diesel-RGS derived producer gas dual fuel operation results in 13.05% higher brake thermal efficiency. Diesel-producer gas (RGS) operation showed the 16.1% decreased exhaust gas temperature and the 12.1% higher nitric oxide (NOx) emission compared to HOME based dual fuel operation. NOx emissions for the HOME based engine operation were found to be lower than the diesel based operation; however, the smoke, hydrocarbon, and carbon monoxide emissions were higher. Diesel fuel saving about 56% was achieved by diesel-producer gas (RGS) dual fuel operation and 100% biofuel utilization in HOME-producer gas dual fuel operation. Abstract

Present work is focused on experimental investigation of performance, combustion and emission of DI diesel engine using Simarouba Oil Methyl Ester (SuOME). Control of combustion process in order to achieve better performance with reduced emission has been achieved by varying the shape of combustion chamber. In order to study the effect of shapes of different combustion chambers on performance of diesel engine, Toroidal Re-entrant Combustion Chamber (TRCC), Lateral Swirl Combustion Chamber (LSCC), Dual Swirl Combustion Chamber (DSCC) and Lateral Dual Swirl Combustion Chamber (LDSCC) were developed without changing compression ratio of standard diesel engine. Experiments were carried out using optimum injection timing of 270bTDC, injector opening pressure of 240 bar and nozzle geometry of 6 holes with 0.2 mm diameter. Results of DI diesel engine operated with SuOME revealed that the LSDCC shape resulted in improved engine brake thermal efficiency with minimum HC and CO emission levels compared to other selected combustion chamber shapes. Abstract

The engine performance has been improved by modifying the combustion chamber shape of the diesel engine for dual-fuel operation with liquid fuel and producer gas (PG). The combined effect of gaseous fuel from redgram stalk and combustion chamber type on the emission and performance of blended-fuel of diesel and HOME biodiesel–PG has been investigated. In this experimental study, four varieties of combustion chambers hemispherical (HCC), low swirl (LSCC), dual swirl (DSCC), and toroidal re-entrant (TRCC) were analyzed comprehensively. The results presented that the TRCC configuration with a given nozzle geometry has 9% improved brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and 10.4% lower exhaust gas temperature (EGT). The smoke, unburnt hydrocarbon (UBHC), and carbon monoxide (CO) decreased by 10–40%, but a 9% increase in nitrogen oxides (NOX) emission levels was observed with TRCC. The delay period and combustion period were decreased by 5% and 7%. The fuel replacement of about 71% for the diesel–PG combination with HCC and 68% for the HOME–PG combination with TRCC was achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Biodiesel is a renewable energy source which is gaining prominence as an alternative fuel over fossil diesel for different applications. Due to their higher viscosity and lower volatility, biodiesels are blended with diesel in various proportions. B20 blends are viable and sustainable solutions in diesel engines with acceptable engine performance as they can replace 20% fossil fuel usage. Biodiesel blends are slightly viscous as compared with diesel and can be used in common rail direct injection (CRDI) engines which provide high pressure injection using an electronic control unit (ECU) with fuel flexibility. In view of this, B20 blends of three biodiesels derived from cashew nutshell (CHNOB (B20)), jackfruit seed (JACKSOB (B20)), and Jamun seed (JAMNSOB (B20)) oils are used in a modified single-cylinder high-pressure-assisted CRDI diesel engine. At a BP of 5.2 kW, for JAMNSOB (B20) operation, BTE, NOx, and PP increased 4.04%, 0.56%, and 5.4%, respectively, and smoke, HC, CO, ID, and CD decreased 5.12%, 6.25%, 2.75%, 5.15%, and 6.25%, respectively, as compared with jackfruit B20 operation. Abstract

Renewable and alternative fuels have numerous advantages compared to fossil fuels as they are biodegradable, providing energy security and foreign exchange saving and addressing environmental concerns, and socio-economic issues as well. Therefore renewable fuels can be predominantly used as fuel for transportation and power generation applications. In view of this background, effect of nozzle and combustion chamber geometry on the performance, combustion and emission characteristics have been investigated in a single cylinder, four stroke water cooled direct injection (DI) compression ignition (CI) engine operated on dual fuel mode using Honge methyl ester (HOME) and producer gas induction. In the present experimental investigation, an effort has been made to enhance the performance of a dual fuel engine utilizing different nozzle orifice and combustion chamber configurations. In the first phase of the work, injector nozzle (3, 4 and 5 hole injector nozzle, each having 0.2, 0.25 and 0.3 mm hole diameter and injection pressure (varied from 210 to 240 bar in steps of 10 bar) was optimized. Subsequently in the next phase of the work, combustion chamber for optimum performance was investigated. In order to match proper combustion chamber for optimum nozzle geometry, two types of combustion chambers such as hemispherical and re-entrant configurations were used. Re-entrant type combustion chamber and 230 bar injection pressure, 4 hole and 0.25 mm nozzle orifice have shown maximum performance. Results of investigation on HOME-producer gas operation showed 4–5% increased brake thermal efficiency with reduced emission levels. However, more research and development of technology should be devoted to this field to further enhance the performance and feasibility of these fuels for dual fuel operation and future exploitations.
