Encotyllabe percussa n. sp. is proposed based on morphology and DNA sequences analysis of ribosomal (18S, 28S) and mitochondrial (COI) gene fragments. Encotyllabe percussa n. sp. was found infecting the spangled emperor Lethrinus nebulosus (n = 75) with higher prevalence from Dibba, Musandam (Gulf of Oman) than in Dhofar Salalah (Indian Ocean), Oman (p = 0.03). The general morphology of E. percussa n. sp. resembles E. caballeroi, E. chironemi and E. spari, which exhibit pre-equatorial testes. However, E. percussa n. sp. shows unique morphological characteristics distinguishing from congeneric species: the large hamuli bear notch allocated externally between the first half proximal of the root, and the small hamuli exhibit semicircular shape with undivided roots. Phylogenetic relationships within the Encotyllabe genus remain unresolved. However, the tree topology with the 28S showed overall consistency with the principal component analysis arrangement (PCA) derived from the morphological analysis. Which showed that the large and small hamuli, marginal hooks, ovary, testes (length and width) and peduncle are currently the most important morphological traits within the genus. Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene fragment showed high interspecific genetic divergence adding unambiguous resolution to discriminate/designate species identity. Interrelations within the genus support the identity of Encotyllabe percussa as a new species. Rastrelliger brachysoma (Bleeker, 1851), the short mackerel, is a dietary staple and of significant economic demand in Southeast Asia and Thailand. However, the demand for short mackerel has precipitated an overfishing crisis, leading to a depletion of fish stocks. Overfishing, coupled with parasitism, may result in a decline in the population of R. brachysoma. Digenetic trematode infection is prevalent in marine fish and has a considerable impact on the overall health of the fish. Here, to identify digenetic trematodes infecting R. brachysoma, we aim to determine the identity, prevalence, and intensity of digenean infections in R. brachysoma from the Gulf of Thailand. A total of 194 short mackerel were obtained from Chon Buri Province, where digeneans were isolated and identified. The molecular identity of the digeneans was confirmed using the nuclear 28S rRNA gene. Of the 194 short mackerel, 100% were found to be infected with digeneans, comprising of Lecithocladium, Prodistomum, Opechona, and Aphanurus. Lecithocladium was the most prevalent (98%) and had the highest intensity of infection (37 mean intensity), followed by Prodistomum (75% prevalence and 17 mean intensity). Our study thus presents the first evidence of digeneans infecting the economically important short mackerel from the Gulf of Thailand. The high infection rate of digenetic trematodes may have implications on the health of R. brachysoma, further driving their population decline. These data underscore the importance of safeguarding fisheries resources in the Gulf of Thailand, and downstream conservation efforts are crucial for evidence-based management decisions to safeguard the long-term sustainability of fish resources., (© 2024. Haliotrema Pteroisi: Paperna, 1972 (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) was found parasitizing the gill lamellae of devil firefish, Pterois miles (Bennet) (Perciformes: Scorpaenidae), in the Red Sea off Safaga (26°44'N, 33°56'E), Egypt. The parasite species was described based on morphological features of available specimens and transferred to PlatycephalotremaKritsky and Nitta, 2019 (Dactylogyridae) as Platycephalotrema pteroisi (Paperna, 1972) n. comb. The occurrence of Pl. pteroisi off Safaga, Egypt, represented a range extension for the helminth of about 160 km to the southwest of the southern end of the Gulf of Aqaba. The transfer of the species to Platycephalotrema based on an evaluation of morphological features was supported by an analysis of molecular sequences of the 28S rDNA gene of Pl. pteroisi and 49 other dactylogyrid species. Maximum-likelihood, Bayesian inference, and maximum parsimony analyses of this dactylogyrid sequence data revealed H. pteroisi to nest with significant support within the clade of Platycephalotrema spp. During the literature review of dactylogyrid species infecting scorpionfishes, it was determined that Ancyrocephalus sp. of Dyer et al. from luna lion fish Pterois lunulata Temminck and Schlegel collected off Okinawa-jima, Japan represented an undescribed species of Platycephalotrema., (© American Society of Parasitologists 2024.)

The genus Ancyrocephalus sensu lato is a large assemblage of species of dactylogyrid monopisthocotyleans without clear taxonomic boundaries. Despite an urgent need for revision, only three representatives of this taxon have been molecularly characterised so far. We found specimens of Ancyrocephalus curtus , a previously non-genotyped species, in gills of Perccottus glenii caught in the River Syumnyur, Amur Basin, Russia. The aim of this study was to assess the phylogenetic position of this parasite using partial sequences of 28S rRNA gene. In the phylogenetic tree, A. curtus appeared as a sister taxon to the dactylogyrine genus Gobioecetes. The new molecular evidence supports the hypothesis about the non-monophyletic status of Ancyrocephalus sensu lato.

The Almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) is a marine fish maintained in mariculture systems and frequently infested by monogenean parasites like Neobenedenia sp. Severe infestations can lead to high mortalities and economic losses for farmers. This study evaluated the effects of temperature on the immune response on Almaco jack infested with Neobenedenia sp. We exposed infested fishes at temperatures of 20 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C for 20 days and took samples of different tissues at the beginning of the experiment, and after 3 and 20 days. The tissues considered were the skin, thymus, cephalic kidney, and spleen to evaluate the relative gene expression of different genes: Hsp70, IgM, IL-1β, IL-10, and MyD88. Our results showed an increase in IL-1β gene expression in the skin after 20 days of infestation but no significant effect of temperature on gene expression, despite increases in infestation rates with temperature. Therefore, relative genetic expression was controlled by the number of parasites and the days post-infestation. Bunocotylid trematodes represent a group of 149 species with a rather complex taxonomic history. The current concept of the subfamily only includes three genera, Bunocotyle, Saturnius, and Robinia. Specimens of a bunocotylid were collected from the silver mullet, M. curema, from a coastal lagoon of Yucatán and identified as belonging to Saturnius. Further detailed morphological study revealed they corresponded to S. maurepasi, a species previously reported from the stripped mullet, Mugil cephalus in Mississippi, USA. Specimens were sequenced for the LSU of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (28S) to test their phylogenetic position. We discovered that they do not belong in Saturnius since they nest as an independent lineage which is the sister taxa of a clade formed by Robinia, and Saturnius + Bunocotyle; additionally, the new genus exhibits high genetic divergence (10-12%) with respect to species allocated in the other bunocotylid genera. Two species of Pseudodiscocotyla Yamaguti, 1965 (Monogenea: Discocotylidae) were collected from crimson jobfish Pristipomoides filamentosus (Valenciennes) (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) off Okinawa-jima island, southern Japan. Pseudodiscocotyla opakapaka is redescribed and represents the first Japanese record. A new species, Pseudodiscocotyla mikiae n. sp., differs from Ps. opakapaka in the absence of spines around the male genital pore, the shape of the vaginal pore, the presence of spines inside the vaginal pore, and the shape of the clamp. The locations of the male genital atrium and the vaginal pore in both species were similar, and the observed armament differences of the male copulatory organ are therefore presumed to establish reproductive isolation. The phylogenetic trees for the Mazocraeidea based on the partial 28S rDNA sequences were created using new sequences of Pseudodiscocotyla mikiae n. sp., and Discocotylidae formed a sister group with the species Diclidophoridae, Macrovalvitrematidae, and Plectanocotylidae. Three juvenile Atlantic tripletail Lobotes surinamensis caught opportunistically in Charleston Harbor (South Carolina, USA) and maintained in captivity for over three months displayed an altered swimming behavior. While no direct causation can be demonstrated herein, fish were infected in their brain by strigeid trematode larvae (metacercariae) of Cardiocephaloides medioconiger , which were identified via ITS2 and 28S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing . Histology showed nonencysted metacercariae within the brain ventricle between the optic tectum and tegmentum, causing distortion of tegmental parenchyma. Aggregates of mononuclear inflammatory cells were in the ventricle adjacent to metacercariae. Metacercarial infection by Cardiocephaloides medioconiger has been reported from the brain and eyes of only two other fish species from the northern US Atlantic coast: the grey mullet Mugil cephalus and silverside Menidia menidia, but this identification is problematic and needs molecular verification. Atlantic tripletail is a new report as a second intermediate host for C. medioconiger and South Carolina is a new locality. A new genus, Doorochen n. gen., is erected for four species of Postlepidapedon Zdzitowiecki, 1993, all of which inhabit members of the labroid genus Choerodon Bleeker, the tuskfishes, and which molecular phylogenies have indicated are not congeneric with the type-species, P. opisthobifurcatum (Zdzitowiecki, 1990) Zdzitowiecki, 1993. Doorochen secundum (Durio & Manter, 1968) n. comb. from Choerodon graphicus (De Vis), the Graphic tuskfish, from the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and New Caledonia is designated the type-species of the new genus. Other species recognised are Doorochen spissum (Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1997) n. comb. from C. venustus (De Vis), the Venus tuskfish, C. cyanodus (Richardson), the Blue tuskfish, and C. graphicus from the GBR; D. uberis (Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1997) n. comb. from C. schoenleinii (Valenciennes), the Blackspot tuskfish, and C. venustus from the GBR and Moreton Bay; and D. philippinense (Machida, 2004) n. comb. from C. anchorago (Bloch), the Orange-dotted tuskfish, from Philippine waters. In addition to these four species, two new species are described: D. zdzitowieckii n. sp. from C. fasciatus (Günther), the Harlequin tuskfish, and C. graphicus from the GBR; and D. goorchana n. sp. from C. anchorago from the GBR and Palau. The genus Postlepidapedon is now considered to comprise just two species, P. opisthobifurcatum and P. quintum Bray & Cribb, 2001. Muscle gross lesions, associated to parasites, were routinely found during self-inspection in a Spanish fish plant processing Atlantic swordfish. To determine the taxonomic status of these parasites, molecular analysis was performed based on 18S, ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2 and 28S rDNA sequences, obtaining a consensus sequences of 4581 bp for the cestode and 4200 bp for the trematode. Taxonomic affiliation was determined by phylogenetic analysis of combined SSU + LSU rDNA regions using maximum likelihood models. Molecular characterization allows us to identify the trematode Maccallumtrema xiphiados and the cestode Molicola sp. infecting the musculature of the Atlantic swordfish. Capsalids are monopisthocotylean monogenean parasites found on the skin and gills of fish. Capsalines (subfamily Capsalinae) are large-sized capsalids, parasitic on highly prized gamefish, and species of Tristoma parasitise only the gills of swordfish (Xiphias gladius). We obtained specimens of Tristoma integrum Diesing, 1850 from swordfish collected off Algeria in the Mediterranean Sea. Here, we describe the specimens, including the key systematics characters of dorsolateral body sclerites. One specimen was used for a next generation sequencing analysis but a part of it, including the sclerites, was mounted on a permanent slide, drawn, and deposited in a curated collection. We characterised the complete mitogenome, the ribosomal cluster (including 18S and 28S) and additional genes such as Elongation factor 1 alpha (EF1α) and Histone 3. We also retrieved molecular information from the host tissue present in the gut of the monogenean and provide the sequence of the complete rRNA cluster of the host, X. gladius. The mitogenome of T. integrum is 13 968 bp in length and codes for 12 protein, 2 rRNA and 22 tRNA. Phylogenies of capsalids were generated from 28S sequences and concatenated mitochondrial protein-coding genes, respectively. In the 28S phylogeny, most subfamilies based on morphology were not found to be monophyletic, but the Capsalinae were monophyletic. The gill monogenean Sparicotyle chrysophrii (Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863) Mamaev, 1984 is a specific and common parasite of wild and cultured gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758, able to cause disease and mortality in aquaculture systems. Few molecular studies have been carried out on this monogenean, and its population structure and genetic diversity are barely known. This study provides the first contribution to the population genetic variation of S. chrysophrii, based on two molecular markers - the structural ribosomal RNA (rRNA) for the large subunit (28S) and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Samples were collected from the gills of farmed and wild S. aurata from Italy and the Spanish Mediterranean. The analysis included previously published sequences. The 28S rDNA analysis was consistent with previous studies of specimens isolated from S. aurata and confirmed the presence of only one species on the gills of this host in the Mediterranean Sea. The COI sequences analysis suggested that the samples isolated in a previous study from a different host species, wild Boops boops (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Adriatic Sea, may represent a new undescribed sister species of S. chrysophrii. The low nucleotide diversity of S. chrysophrii isolated only from S. aurata versus the high haplotype diversity revealed small differences between haplotypes. The haplotypes shared between wild and farmed hosts from Spain provided the first molecular evidence of the possible transfer of S. chrysophrii between wild and farmed populations of S. aurata. The Nile perch (Lates niloticus) is a notorious invasive species. The introductions of Nile perch into several lakes and rivers in the Lake Victoria region led to the impoverishment of trophic food webs, particularly well documented in Lake Victoria. Additionally, its parasites were co-introduced, including Dolicirroplectanum lacustre (Monogenea, Diplectanidae). Dolicirroplectanum lacustre is the single monogenean gill parasite of latid fishes (Lates spp.) inhabiting several major African freshwater systems. We examined the intra-specific diversification of D. lacustre from Lates niloticus in Lake Albert, Uganda (native range) and Lake Victoria (introduced range) by assessing morphological and genetic differentiation, and microhabitat preference. We expected reduced morphological and genetic diversity for D. lacustre in Lake Victoria compared with Lake Albert, as a result of the historical introductions. We found that D. lacustre displayed high morphological variability within and between African freshwaters, with two morphotypes identified, as in former studies. The single shared morphotype between Lake Albert and Lake Victoria displayed similar levels of haplotype and nucleotide diversity between the lakes. Mitonuclear discordance within the morphotypes of D. lacustre indicates an incomplete reproductive barrier between the morphotypes. The diversification in the mitochondrial gene portion is directly linked with the morphotypes, while the nuclear gene portions indicate conspecificity. Metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. were found in the abdominal cavity of the Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii) collected in Liaoning Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. The sequences of the mitochondrial cox1 gene and ribosomal ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 region were obtained and used for molecular identification and phylogenetic assessment of this parasite species. Results of phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and cox1 markers showed that the metacercariae of Tylodelphys sp. ex P. glenii from China were conspecific with specimens of Tylodelphys sp. collected by Sokolov et al. (2013) from the same fish-host species captured earlier in West Siberia, Russia. The examined Tylodelphys sp. ex. P. glenii is the only member of the genus whose metacercariae parasitise the abdominal cavity of fish in northern Eurasia. Tylodelphys sp. ex P. glenii clustered with T. darbyi, T. immer, T. podicipina, and Tylodelphys sp. of Soldánová et al., 2017 based on mitochondrial DNA markers, and with T. darbyi, T. immer, T. kuerepus, and T. schreuringi using nuclear DNA markers.

The Levant Basin is in many ways the world's most invaded marine ecosystem owing to the existence of the man-made Suez Canal. The invasion of free-living organisms through this pathway is increasingly documented and monitored in the past two decades, and their ecological impact recognized. Nonetheless, while tremendous scientific effort is invested in documenting introduced fishes, co-introduction events of these fishes and their parasites have drawn relatively little interest. In our research, we examined the presence of gill parasites (Monogenea) on the invasive narrow barred Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson which has been known in the Mediterranean Sea for 80 years. The gills of S. commerson supported numerous, relatively large monogeneans (Monogenea: Gastrocotylinea), reaching prevalence levels of 100% with a mean intensity of ~ 80 worms per host. Using an integrated molecular and morphological approach, four gastrocotylinean species were identified: Gotocotyla acanthura, Cathucotyle cathuaui, Pricea multae, and Pseudothoracocotyla ovalis. Two species, C. cathuaui and P. ovalis, are reported here for the first time from the Mediterranean. Sequences of the 28S rRNA gene of G. acanthura from native hosts, Pomatomus saltatrix and Trachinotus ovatus, differed from individuals collected from S. commerson by 1.8%. We therefore suggest that the taxonomic status and distribution of G. acanthura should be revisited, and we recommend an integrated approach as essential to accurately detect co-introductions., (© 2022. A new species of lepocreadiid, Opechonoides opisthoporus n. sp., is described infecting 12 pomacentrid fish species from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, with Abudefduf whitleyi Allen & Robertson as the type-host. This taxon differs from the only other known member of the genus, Opechonoides gure Yamaguti, 1940, in the sucker width ratio, cirrus-sac length, position of the testes, position of the pore of Laurer's canal, and relative post-testicular distance. The new species exhibits stenoxenic host-specificity, infecting pomacentrids from seven genera: Abudefduf Forsskål, Amphiprion Bloch & Schneider, Neoglyphidodon Allen, Neopomacentrus Allen, Plectroglyphidodon Fowler & Ball, Pomacentrus Lacépède and Stegastes Jenyns. Phylogenetic analyses of 28S rDNA sequence data demonstrate that O. opisthoporus n. sp. forms a strongly supported clade with Prodistomum orientale (Layman, 1930) Bray & Gibson, 1990. The life cycle of this new species is partly elucidated on the basis of ITS2 rDNA sequence data; intermediate hosts are shown to be three species of Ctenophora. New host records and molecular data are reported for Lepocreadium oyabitcha Machida, 1984 and Lepotrema amblyglyphidodonis Bray, Cutmore & Cribb, 2018, and new molecular data are provided for Lepotrema acanthochromidis Bray, Cutmore & Cribb, 2018 and Lepotrema adlardi (Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1993) Bray & Cribb, 1996. An integrative study was performed to understand the phylogenetic relationships of an undescribed, freshwater species of microcotylid parasitizing Plagioscion squamosissimus from the Amazon River Basin. Based on morphological and molecular analysis (18S rDNA and partial 28S rDNA genes), a new genus is proposed to accommodate this new species, Pauciconfibuloides amazonica gen. n. sp. n. The new genus is closely related to Protastomicrocotylinae and Pauciconfibula by sharing the vagina, male copulatory organ, and genital atrium all unarmed. However, Pauciconfibuloides gen. n. can be distinguished from those taxa by the prostatic system and position of the vaginal pore. Molecular phylogenetic inference suggests a sister relationship with species of Polylabris (Prostatomicrocotylinae), but to date, there are no available 18S or 28S rDNA sequences of Pauciconfibula to be compared. This study describes the occurrence and molecular identification of Monogenea from blue-spotted flathead Platycephalus caeruleopunctatus (McCulloch) (Scorpaeniformes: Platycephalidae) from waters off the NSW coast, Australia. Platycephalus spp. are favoured by consumers for delicate, white, mild flavoured flesh and therefore are commercially important species within Australia. Platycephalus spp. are also extensively targeted by Australian recreational fishers. There has been no previous study that has exclusively focused on Pl. caeruleopunctatus in Australia or globally. Although a single study by Dillon (1985), of monogeneans infecting Platycephalus spp. from Australian waters, identified Microcotyle bassensis Murray, 1931 in Pl. caeruleopunctatus. The present study combines both morphological and molecular methods to identify both host and parasites. A total of 116 fish, sourced from the waters off the coast of New South Wales, Australia, were examined. A total of 1498 Monogenea were recovered from the gills. The overall prevalence, mean intensity, and mean abundance were 72%, 18.05, and 12.91, respectively. Monogenea were initially classified morphologically as two different species M. bassensis (family: Microcotylidae) and Platycephalotrema bassense (Hughes, 1928) Kritsky & Nitta, 2019 (family: Ancyrocephalidae). Molecular identification of Monogenea was conducted through sequencing of their mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and nuclear 28S genes. The specific identification of host Pl. caeruleopunctatus was confirmed through sequencing the cox1 gene. There was no comparable sequence for cox1 and 28S genes available in GenBank for the monogenean species found in the present study. Only a single sequence (obtained from the nuclear ITS2-rDNA) was deposited in GenBank for M. bassensis. However, the phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear sequences revealed that the identified Monogenea clustered according to their familial groups. Platycephalotrema bassense was identified for the first time in Pl. caeruleopunctatus in the present study. This study has provided the first evidence for the exploration of both cox1 and 28S sequences of all Monogenea. Background: The family Plectanocotylidae includes parasites of the gills of marine fish; although nine genera and about 20 species have been described, almost no molecular information is available. Putting aside Plectanocotyle elliptica Diesing, 1850, supposedly a parasite of the white perch Morone americana , never found again since its original description, two species were valid within Plectanocotyle Diesing, 1850 before this work: Plectanocotyle gurnardi (Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863) Llewellyn, 1941 and Plectanocotyle major Boudaya, Neifar & Euzet, 2006., Methods: In this paper, we describe the third species of the genus Plectanocotyle and perform a comparative morphological and molecular analysis of the three species and of Triglicola obscura (Euzet & Suriano, 1974) Mamaev, 1976. Host fishes were also barcoded (COI) for confirmation of host identifications., Results: Plectanocotyle lastovizae n. sp. is described from the gills of the streaked gurnard Chelidonichthys lastoviza collected off Algeria. The species is compared with specimens of Plectanocotyle cf. gurnardi (from C. lastoviza ) from the same locality and P. major and T. obscura (both from the longfin gurnard C. obscurus ). Molecules from Plectanocotyle cf. gurnardi could not be compared with P. gurnardi from the type-host and type-locality and we kept the status of the Mediterranean specimens as pending. Algeria is a new geographic record for P. major and T. obscura . A new microsporidian Toguebayea baccigeri n. gen., n. sp., hyperparasite of Bacciger israelensis (Digenea, Faustulidae), parasite of Boops boops (Teleostei, Sparidae) is described by means of transmission electron microscopy. The phylogenetic analysis, based on the SSU rDNA gene, places the new species in the clade containing mainly crustacean-infecting microsporidia of the genus Cucumispora, within superclade V (Marinosporidia) sensu Vossbrinck et al., 2014. Mature spores of T. baccigeri are ovoid, uninucleated and measure 2.5 × 1.4 μm. The number of coils of the polar tube is 8-10. The polaroplast is composed of an external lamellar part and an internal vesicular or granular part. The main differences that distinguish the new genus and new species from the closely related microsporidia include hyperparasitism in a digenean host infecting a marine fish, the geographic distribution (coast of Tunisia), presence of one nucleus at all developmental stages, disporoblastic sporogony, and the absence of sporophorous vacuoles., (© J. Specimens of Hexostoma thynni (Delaroche, 1811) Rafinesque, 1815 were collected from their type-host, the bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus, caught off Algeria, i.e. close to the type-locality, off Mallorca, which is also in the Mediterranean. The species is briefly redescribed and compared to previous descriptions, under the same name or as its synonym Plagiopeltis duplicata Diesing, 1858, to ascertain identity of specimens. The three genera within the Hexostomatidae (Hexostoma Rafinesque, 1815, Neohexostoma Price, 1961 and Homostoma Unnithan, 1965) are briefly discussed, with comments on the fragility of characters used to distinguish them. Using next-generation sequencing, the complete mitogenome and the cluster of ribosomal genes (SSU, LSU, ITS1, ITS2, 5.8S) were obtained. The mitogenome is 14,649 bp long and codes for 12 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes and 22 transfer RNA genes; its size is similar to other mitogenomes obtained from polyopisthocotylean monogeneans. A phylogeny based on concatenated mitogenome protein-coding genes from nine species of polyopisthocotylean monogeneans produced a tree in which the Hexostomatidae H. thynni was associated with other Mazocraeidea, such as Chauhaneidae and Diclidophoridae. This invalidates the hypothesis of Boeger & Kritsky (1993) of Hexostomatidae as sister-group to the Mazocraeidea and suggests the demise of the suborder Hexostomatinea Boeger & Kritsky, 1993. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is a successful invader of the Great Lakes-St Lawrence River basin that harbours a number of local parasites. The most common are metacercariae of the genus Diplostomum. Species of Diplostomum are morphologically difficult to distinguish but can be separated using molecular techniques. While a few species have been sequenced from invasive round gobies in this study system, their relative abundance has not been documented. The purpose of this study was to determine the species composition of Diplostomum spp. and their relative abundance in round gobies in the St Lawrence River by sequencing the barcode region of cytochrome c oxidase I. In 2007-2011, Diplostomum huronense (=Diplostomum sp. 1) was the most common, followed in order by Diplostomum indistinctum (=Diplostomum sp. 4) and Diplostomum indistinctum sensu Galazzo, Dayanandan, Marcogliese & McLaughlin (2002). In 2012, the most common species infecting the round goby in the St Lawrence River was D. huronense, followed by D. indistinctum and Diplostomum gavium (=Diplostomum sp. 3). The invasion of the round goby in the St Lawrence River was followed by a decline of Diplostomum spp. in native fishes to low levels, leading to the previously published hypothesis that the presence of the round goby has led to a dilution effect. Herein, it is suggested that despite the low infection levels in the round goby, infections still may lead to spillback, helping to maintain Diplostomum spp. in native fishes, albeit at low levels.

The trematode superfamily Monorchioidea comprises three families of teleost parasites: the Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911, Lissorchiidae Magath, 1917, and Deropristidae Cable & Hunninen, 1942. All presently known lissorchiid and deropristid life cycles have gastropods as first intermediate hosts, whereas those of monorchiids involve bivalves. Here, we report an unexpected intermediate host for monorchiids; two species of Hurleytrematoides Yamaguti, 1954 use gastropods as first intermediate hosts. Sporocysts and cercariae were found infecting two species of the family Vermetidae, highly specialised sessile gastropods that form calcareous tubes, from two locations off the coast of Queensland, Australia. These intramolluscan infections broadly corresponded morphologically to those of known monorchiids in that the cercariae have a spinous tegument, oral and ventral suckers, a simple tail and distinct eye-spots. Given the simplified morphology of intramolluscan infections, genetic data provided a definitive identification. ITS2 rDNA and cox1 mtDNA sequence data from the gastropod infections were identical to two species of Hurleytrematoides, parasites of butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae); Hurleytrematoides loi McNamara & Cribb, 2011 from Moreton Bay (south-eastern Queensland) and Heron Island (southern Great Barrier Reef) and Hurleytrematoides morandi McNamara & Cribb, 2011 from Heron Island. Notably, species of Hurleytrematoides are positioned relatively basal in the phylogeny of the Monorchiidae and are a sister lineage to that of species known to infect bivalves. Thus, the most parsimonious evolutionary hypothesis to explain infection of gastropods by these monorchiids is that basal monorchiids (in our analyses, species of Cableia Sogandares-Bernal, 1959, Helicometroides Yamaguti, 1934 and Hurleytrematoides) will all prove to infect gastropods, suggesting a single host switching event into bivalves for more derived monorchiids (17 other genera in our phylogenetic analyses). A less parsimonious hypothesis is that the infection of vermetids will prove to be restricted to species of Hurleytrematoides, as an isolated secondary recolonisation of gastropods from a bivalve-infecting lineage. Many Pauciconfibula spp. have a long and complicated taxonomic history. The remaining unsolved taxonomic confusion in this genus is impelled by the host range and status of Pauciconfibula spp. from trachinid fishes: Pauciconfibula trachini and Pauciconfibula draconis, from Trachinus radiatus and Trachinus draco (Trachinidae), respectively. Pauciconfibula trachini was reported on Trachinus draco, type host of Pauciconfibula draconis suggesting thus a stenoxenic specificity for the former monogenean and the occurrence of two congeneric polyopisthocotyleans on a single host. Moreover, the validity of Pauciconfibula draconis was repeatedly questioned by several authors, unjustified synonymy between the two species was proposed, and the delimitations between the two species remained unsolved. Original descriptions were also incomplete and poorly illustrated. In this study, we provide a detailed illustrated redescription of both species based on newly collected specimens of Pauciconfibula trachini and Pauciconfibula draconis collected from their type hosts from off three Mediterranean localities: Algeria, Tunisia, and Italy. Integrative taxonomy using COI sequences was applied to resolve the delimitation between Pauciconfibula trachini and P. draconis. This study provides the first DNA barcoding for members of this genus.

South African clinids are a major component of the temperate intertidal regions that are also known to participate in life cycles and transmission of several groups of parasites. However, the knowledge of trematode diversity of these fishes is incomplete. In this study, two species of Clinus Cuvier, the super klipfish Clinus superciliosus (Linnaeus) and the bluntnose klipfish Clinus cottoides Valenciennes, were collected from six localities along the South African coast and examined for the presence of trematodes. Metacercariae of Cardiocephaloides Sudarikov, 1959 were found in the eye vitreous humour and brain of C. superciliosus and in the eye vitreous humour of C. cottoides. Detailed analyses integrating morphological and molecular sequence data (28S rDNA, ITS2 rDNA-region, and COI mtDNA) revealed that these belong to two species, Cardiocephaloides physalis (Lutz, 1926) and an unknown species of Cardiocephaloides. This study provides the first report of clinid fishes serving as intermediate hosts for trematodes, reveals that the diversity of Cardiocephaloides in South Africa is higher than previously recorded, and highlights the need for further research to elucidate the life cycles of these trematode species. The broad geographical distribution of Cardiocephaloides spp. was confirmed in the present study based on molecular sequence data. The host-parasite interactions between clinid fishes and metacercariae of Cardiocephaloides are yet to be explored.

A new trematode species, Derogenes lacustris Tsuchida, Flores, Viozzi, Rauque et Urabe n. sp. (Derogenidae: Derogeninae), from freshwater fishes is described using morphological and molecular approaches in Argentinean Patagonia. D. lacustris is the most common hemiuroidean species in the Limay River basin and parasitizes almost all the native and introduced Patagonian freshwater fish. This new species could be considered as the unique freshwater species in the genus Derogenes Nicoll, 1910. Another hemiuroidean species, Thometrema patagonica Szidat (Archiev Hydrobiol 51: 542-577, 1956) Lunaschi et Drago 2000 (Derogenidae: Halipeginae), is found from Percichthys trucha (Perciformes) in the Neuquén River basin. Its diagnosis and molecular data are provided by the present study. In the molecular analysis of the Patagonian hemiuroideans, T. patagonica composes a group with halipeginean species in the phylogenetic tree of 28S rDNA sequences, while D. lacustris is not included in the same group. D. lacustris also shows low intraspecific variation in COI sequences regardless of the localities or host species.

Lamellodiscus chin n. sp. (Monogenea: Diplectanidae) was described from Acanthopagrus sivicolus Akazaki (Perciformes: Sparidae) in Okinawa-jima Island, Ryukyu Islands based on morphological and molecular data. This new species resembles L. spari and L. elegans in morphologically but differs by its accessory piece curving and widening toward the tip. Three species of Lamellodiscus (L. japonicus Ogawa & Egusa, 1978, L. takitai Ogawa & Egusa, 1978, and L. spari Zhukov, 1970) were recorded from A. schlegelii (Bleeker), and L. japonicus was collected from A. latus (Houttuyn) in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. I herein propose Lamellodiscus egusai nom. nov. for L. japonicus which is a junior primary homonym of L. japonicus Pillai & Pillai, 1974. Based on the type specimens and newly collected specimens from wild hosts, the type localities of L. japonicus (= L. egusai nom. nov.) and L. takitai are discussed. In addition, a list of nominal species of Japanese diplectanids is provided.

Cyclocotyla bellones Otto, 1823 (Diclidophoridae) is a monogenean characterised by an exceptional way of life. It is a hyperparasite that attaches itself to the dorsal face of isopods, themselves parasites in the buccal cavity of fishes. In this study, Cy. bellones was found on Ceratothoa parallela (Otto, 1828), a cymothoid isopod parasite of the sparid fish Boops boops off Algeria in the Mediterranean Sea. Choricotyle australiensis Roubal, Armitage & Rohde, 1983, a diclidophorid monogenean species, is redescribed and genetically characterised using the partial nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA gene (28S rRNA) and a fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene sequences for specimens collected from Chrysophrys auratus (Forster) off Australia and New Zealand. Previous studies have either provided morphological or genetic results, whereas this study combines morphological and advanced molecular methods. A total of 70 Ch. auratus were examined with 22 individuals of C. australiensis recovered from the gills (overall prevalence of 23%). This study has provided the first evidence for the exploration of mitochondrial cox1 region for C. australiensis. Comparison of the newly generated sequences with other available data supported the distinction of C. australiensis among diclidophorid Furhmann, 1928 species thus confirming its taxonomic status.

A new ancyrocephalid monogenean is described from the gills of wild White-spottedrabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus (Park) based on morphological and molecular analyses. Glyphidohaptor safiensis n. sp. can be distinguished from other members of the genus by the shape of the accessory piece of the male copulatory organ (MCO). Unlike its congeners, the rod-shaped accessory piece of G. safiensis n. sp. is distally broad and flattened. The MCO of G. safiensis n. sp. is curved, enclosed in a heavy sheath with a terminal flap. Partial large subunit (LSU), partial small subunit (SSU) and the partial SSU, entire internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1) and partial 5.8S rDNA of the new species and two species of Tetrancistrum Goto & Kikuchi, 1917 from the same host and locality were sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. The LSU rDNA analysis grouped G. safiensis n. sp. with Tetrancistrum sp. from the gills of Siganus fuscescens Houttuyn from Australia, indicating a possible misidentification of the latter. Sequences of the SSU rDNA of the new species were most similar to those for Pseudohaliotrema sphincteroporus Yamaguti, 1953, demonstrating the close relatedness of the genera Pseudohaliotrema Yamaguti, 1953 and Glyphidohaptor Kritsky, Galli & Yang, 2007 within the Ancyrocephalidae. The comparison of the partial SSU (424 bp) and entire ITS1 and partial 5.8S rDNA (246 bp) sequences obtained for G. safiensis n. sp. with the only available sequence of another member of Glyphidohaptor Kritsky, Galli & Yang, 2007, G. pletocirra Paperna, 1972 (HE601931-HE601933) yielded on average 1.08% dissimilarity (a difference of 7 bases), with a p-distance of 0.010 ± 0.004%. This is the first record of a species of Glyphidohaptor from S. canaliculatus and from the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Three species of Dioncopseudobenedenia Yamaguti, 1965 (Monogenea: Capsalidae: Benedeniinae) have been described, all found parasitising Naso spp. (Acanthuridae) and Siganus lineatus (Siganidae), in Hawaii, the Great Barrier Reef, and New Caledonia in the Pacific. In this paper, D. elongata n. sp. is described, found parasitising the gills of N. unicornis (Forsskål) caught off Okinawa-jima Island. Dioncopseudobenedenia kala Yamaguti, 1965 is also reported, found parasitising the gills of N. unicornis, and those of a new host, the common dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus (Coryphaenidae), off Okinawa and Kochi prefectures, Japan. The new species differed from known species in both nuclear (28S rDNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and mitochondrial DNA (cox1) sequences. Morphologically, the new species differed from other species of Dioncopseudobenedenia in possessing a longer accessory sclerite and a thick, short penis. No species of Dioncopseudobenedenia have been detected during past examinations of C. hippurus; this instance was probably an accidental infection. A key for identification of the species of Dioncopseudobenedenia is also provided herein.

Two species of microcotylid monogeneans, Microcotyle caudata Goto, 1894 and Microcotyle sebastisci Yamaguti, 1958, have been reported from fishes of the Sebastes inermis species complex and Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier) (Scorpaeniformes: Sebastidae). So far, these parasite species have been distinguished by the size of the eggs and the number of testes, but based on morphological evidence including re-examination of the type-specimens and topotypes and molecular analysis, we consider M. sebastisci to be a junior synonym of M. caudata. As a result, M. caudata exhibits a wide host range, seven species from three genera and two families. A new species, Microcotyle kasago n. sp., is described based on material from S. marmoratus and differentiated from other congeners by means of morphological and molecular analysis.

Knowledge of the Arabian Gulf fish's parasite fauna is very poor. Until recently, only scattered reports from different locations are known for ecto- and endoparasites. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the digenean species that infects one of the most economically fish species in the Arabian Gulf, the rosy goatfish Parupeneus rubescens . One plagiorchiid species has been described, belonging to the Gorgoderidae family, and has been named as Phyllodistomum vaili Ho, Bray, Cutmore, Ward & Cribb, 2014 based on its morphological and morphometric characteristics. In order to accurately classify and characterize this plagiorchiid species, molecular analysis was carried out using both nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA gene regions and revealed that the present plagiorchiid species was associated with other species belonging to the Gorgoderidae family and deeply embedded in the Phyllodistomum genus, closely related to the previously described P. vaili (gb| KF013187.1, KF013173.1). The present study therefore revealed that the species Phyllodistomum is the first account as endoparasites from the rosy goatfish inhabiting the Arabian Gulf.

Background: Microcotyle erythrini van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) and other closely related species of the genus are often considered as cryptic. Records in hosts other than the type-host with no species confirmation by molecular analyses have contributed to this situation., Methods: Gill parasites of five sparid fishes, Boops boops (L.), Pagellus erythrinus (L.), P. acarne (Risso), Dentex dentex (L.) and Pagrus pagrus (L.), from the Western Mediterranean off Spain were collected. Specimens of Microcotyle spp. were characterised both molecularly and morphologically. Partial fragments (domains D1-D3) of the 28S rRNA gene and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene were amplified and used for molecular identification and phylogenetic reconstruction. Principal components analysis was used to look for patterns of morphological separation., Results: Molecular analyses confirmed the identity of three species: M. erythrini ex P. erythrinus and Pa. pagrus; M. isyebi Bouguerche, Gey, Justine & Tazerouti, 2019 ex B. boops; and a species new to science described herein, M. whittingtoni n. sp. ex D. dentex. The specific morphological traits and confirmed hosts (P. erythrinus and Pa. pagrus) are delimited here in order to avoid misidentifications of M. erythrini (sensu stricto). Microcotyle erythrini (s.s.) is mostly differentiated by the shape of its haptor, which is also longer than in the other congeners. New morphological and molecular data are provided for M. isyebi from the Spanish Mediterranean enlarging the data on its geographical range. Microcotyle whittingtoni n. sp. is described from D. dentex and distinguished from the remaining currently recognised species of the genus by the number and robustness of the clamps., Conclusions: New diagnostic morphological traits useful to differentiate Microcotyle spp. are suggested: (i) haptor dimensions including lobes; (ii) the thickness of the clamps; (iii) the size and shape of spines of the genital atrium; (iv) the extension of the posterior extremities of vitelline fields; and (v) the shape of egg filaments. The use of new morphological approaches may allow considering these species of Microcotyle as being pseudocryptic. The use of representative undamaged specimens that have been genetically confirmed as conspecific is considered crucial to avoid abnormally wide morphological ranges that prevent species differentiation.

Parasite biodiversity of fish in coral reefs of the South China Sea is still incompletely explored. We describe here a new species of Neohexostoma (Monogenea: Hexostomatidae) from the gill filaments of the dogtooth tuna Gymnosarda unicolor (Scombridae), collected off Yongshu Reef, South China Sea. Neohexostoma gymnosardae n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by the following features: (i) haptor clearly marked from body proper by a strongly constricted peduncle, divided in its posterior margin into two symmetrical lobes, (ii) vagina armed with scattered small blunt spines, (iii) eggs tied by their long polar filaments, (vi) esophagus with several lateral diverticula, (v) intestinal ceca unfused and extending into the haptor. We present an analysis of the relationships of this monogenean based on partial 28S rDNA sequences. An identification key for species of Neohexostoma is provided. Allogastrocotyle bivaginalis Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983, the sole species of Allogastrocotyle Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983, was described from Trachurus lathami Nichols off Venezuela and never recorded since. We found monogeneans on Trachurus picturatus (Bowdich) (Carangidae) off the Algerian coast, Mediterranean Sea, which had the characteristics of the genus, including, especially, paired vaginae. We compared them to the single available specimen of A. bivaginalis, the holotype. Unfortunately, this holotype does not show clamp structure and soft internal anatomy. Our specimens were similar to A. bivaginalis in most characteristics such as body shape, vaginal openings, and number of testes, clamps and hooks in genital atrium. We detected minor differences in clamp structure but could not ascertain if these were the result of incomplete observations in the original description of real morphological differences. The host fish of our specimens were barcoded (cox1) confirming their specific identity. A phylogenetic analysis of cox1 sequences showed that our sequences of A. bivaginalis were distinct from those of Pseudaxine trachuri Parona & Perugia, 1889 (distance > 15%) and of several other gastrocotylids. Finally, we could not distinguish our Mediterranean specimens from A. bivaginalis, neither on the base of morphology (because the original description is incomplete) nor on molecules (because molecular information is lacking on A. bivaginalis from Venezuela) and ascribe them to A. bivaginalis. However, hosts are different, and localities are widely separated, so it is likely that future study will show that the species from the Mediterranean is a distinct, new, species.

Flagellotrema convolutum Ozaki, 1936 was found parasitising the intestine of two new host fish species, the Indian sail-fin surgeonfish, Zebrasoma desjardinii (Bennett) (Acanthuridae), and the Picasso triggerfish, Rhinecanthus assasi (Forsskål) (Balistidae), from the northern Red Sea off Egypt. Another description of this species is provided with detailed morphological observations made of the genital systems. Using newly acquired molecular data from the D1-D3 regions of 28S rDNA, the phylogenetic relationships of subfamilies and genera within the Gyliauchenidae Fukui, 1929 are elucidated with morphological support. The Petalocotylinae Ozaki, 1934 and the Robphildollfusiinae Paggi & Orecchia, 1963 are recognized as valid subfamilies within the Gyliauchenidae. The Apharyngogyliaucheninae Yamaguti, 1942 and the Ichthyotreminae Caballero & Bravo-Hollis, 1952 remain junior synonyms of the Gyliaucheninae Fukui, 1929. Based on its unique position relative to all gyliauchenid subfamilies and its distinct separation from all other gyliauchenine genera, the Paragyliaucheninae n. subfam. is erected to contain Paragyliauchen Yamaguti, 1934. Paragyliauchen differs from all other gyliauchenine genera by having a pharynx differentiated into two, well-developed muscular regions: an anterior region composed of a ring with indented projections anteriorly and a posterior region that is ellipsoidal or barrel-shaped. Modified and/or new keys to the four subfamilies we recognize within the Gyliauchenidae as well as the genera within each subfamily are presented, and we discuss the evolutionary development and etymology of the unique anatomy of the anterior of gyliauchenids.

Background: Digenean trematodes of the family Didymozoidae are tissue parasites that are particularly common in scombrid fish. These parasites can reduce the commercial value of fish, especially the ones occurring in the muscle., Purpose: In the present study and for the first time, we report the occurrence of didymozoids in muscle tissue of Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) collected in northeast Atlantic (Portuguese coast)., Methods: The entire musculature of 64 Scomber colias was removed and examined macroscopically and under a stereomicroscope to search for parasites., Results: The prevalence (3.1%) and abundance (0.03) of infection detected were quite low, but the parasites cause muscle softening decreasing the quality of the infected fish. If the infection levels increase, this may constitute a cause of concern for the fisheries and canning industry., Conclusion: Didymozoids identified in this study are closely related to muscle parasites detected in other fish species of the genus Scomber, most probably the same species. Phylogenetic analysis also corroborates the hypothesis that muscle-parasitizing didymozoids are distinct from the ones parasitizing other fish organs.

Four new monorchiid trematodes are reported from Moreton Bay, Australia; three new species of Provitellus Dove & Cribb, 1998 and one species of Ovipusillus Dove & Cribb, 1998, are described from Gnathanodon speciosus (Forsskål) (Carangidae), the golden trevally. Provitellus chaometra n. sp., Provitellus infrequens n. sp. and Provitellus infibrova n. sp. differ significantly from the only other species of this genus, Provitellus turrum Dove & Cribb, 1998, in the structure of the eggs, vitelline follicles and terminal organ. The four species are united, however, in the possession of short caeca and a long genital atrium, a combination not reported previously. Ovipusillus geminus n. sp. strongly resembles its only congener, Ovipusillus mayu Dove & Cribb, 1998, but differs in the morphology of the diverticulum in the cirrus-sac and the shape of the pharynx. Complete ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA sequence data were generated for all four species, as well as for two known species of Hurleytrematoides Yamaguti, 1953, Hurleytrematoides galzini McNamara & Cribb, 2011 and Hurleytrematoides loi McNamara & Cribb, 2011. These sequences were analysed with those for other monorchiids available on GenBank, and phylogenetic analyses showed that the four species of Provitellus and two species of Ovipusillus each form strongly supported clades. As with previous monorchiid phylogenetic studies, however, the overall resolution of the phylogeny of the Monorchiidae is poor.

Parasite biodiversity of fish of the southern part of the Mediterranean sea is still incompletely explored. We describe here Microcotyle visa n. sp. from the gill filaments of the bluespotted seabream Pagrus caeruleostictus (Valenciennes) (Sparidae) collected off the Algerian coast. The identity of fish hosts was confirmed by barcoding. Microcotyle visa n. sp. is herein described and illustrated. Analysis of the cox1 gene of the monogeneans revealed minor intraspecific variation (1.4%), an order of magnitude lower than the distance between this species and other Microcotyle species (10-15 %). Microcotyle visa n. sp. is distinguished from Microcotyle erythrini van Beneden & Hesse, 1863, a congener infesting sparids, on the basis of morphological (size of clamps, number of testes) and molecular (cox1) differences. This is the fourth member of the genus known to parasitise a sparid host. A species of Paramicrocotyle sp. included in the molecular analysis was nested within a robust Microcotyle + Paramicrocotyle clade; in the absence of demonstrated molecular and morphological differences, we consider that Paramicrocotyle Caballero & Bravo-Hollis, 1972 is a junior synonym of Microcotyle van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 and transfer two species of Paramicrocotyle as Microcotyle danielcarrioni (Martinez & Barrantes, 1977) n. comb. and Microcotyle moyanoi (Villalba & Fernandes, 1986) n. comb.

Megasolena mikra sp. nov. is described from the queen angelfish, Holacanthus ciliaris (Linnaeus), off Florida, USA. The new species can be differentiated from all other species of Megasolena Linton, 1910 except Megasolena littoralis Muñoz, George-Nascimento, and Bray, 2017 in possessing testes that are smaller in diameter than the ovary. The new species can be differentiated from M. littoralis in lacking tegumental spines and possessing oral sucker papillae. Molecular data are provided for two species each of Cadenatella Dollfus, 1946, Hapladena Linton, 1910, and Megasolena Linton, 1910. Bayesian inference analysis of concatenated internal transcribed spacer region-2 (ITS2) and partial 28S rDNA sequences of 50 haploporoids revealed 1) a monophyletic Atractotrematidae Yamaguti, 1939 sister to the rest of the haploporoids tested; 2) a paraphyletic Megasoleninae Manter, 1935 - if Hapladena is included; and 3) a monophyletic Cadenatellinae Gibson and Bray, 1982 sister to the 'mugilid' haploporids. The 'mugilid' haploporids formed a monophyletic clade consisting of the subfamilies Chalcinotrematinae Overstreet and Curran, 2005, Forticulcitinae Blasco-Costa, Balbuena, Kostadinova, and Olson, 2009, Haploporinae Nicoll, 1914, and Waretrematinae Srivastava, 1937. Based on our analysis we restrict the Megasoleninae to include Megasolena, Vitellibaculum Montgomery, 1957, and Metamegasolena Yamaguti, 1970, all of which have species with two testes. To accommodate the former megasolenine taxa with a single testis, we erect the Hapladeninae subf. nov. for species in Hapladena and tentatively, Myodera Montgomery, 1957. Our results further support that haploporoids had a common marine ancestor with two testes, and that members of the Haploporoidea Nicoll, 1914 underwent diversification following a shift from a primarily marine life history with eupercarian hosts to a more euryhaline one with diadromous hosts (namely mullet)., (Copyright © 2018. We review species of the genus Lepotrema Ozaki, 1932 from marine fishes in the Indo-West Pacific. Prior to the present study six species were recognised. Here we propose eight new species on the basis of combined morphological and molecular analysis: Lepotrema acanthochromidis n. sp. ex Acanthochromis polyacanthus from the Great Barrier Reef (GBR); Lepotrema hemitaurichthydis n. sp. ex Hemitaurichthys polylepis and H. thompsoni from Palau and French Polynesia; Lepotrema melichthydis n. sp. ex Melichthys vidua from Palau and the GBR; Lepotrema amansis n. sp. ex Amanses scopas from the GBR; Lepotrema cirripectis n. sp. ex Cirripectes filamentosus, C. chelomatus and C. stigmaticus from the GBR; Lepotrema justinei n. sp. ex Sufflamen fraenatum from New Caledonia; Lepotrema moretonense n. sp. ex Prionurus microlepidotus, P. maculatus and Selenotoca multifasciata from Moreton Bay; and Lepotrema amblyglyphidodonis n. sp. ex Amblyglyphidodon curacao and Amphipron akyndynos from the GBR. We also report new host records and provide novel molecular data for two known species: Lepotrema adlardi Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1993 and Lepotrema monile Bray & Cribb, 1998. Two new combinations are formed, Lepotrema cylindricum (Wang, 1989) n. comb. (for Preptetos cylindricus) and Lepotrema navodonis (Shen, 1986) n. comb. (for Lepocreadium navodoni). With the exception of a handful of ambiguous records, the evidence is compelling that the host-specificity of species in this genus is overwhelmingly oioxenous or stenoxenous. This renders the host distribution in three orders and ten families especially difficult to explain as many seemingly suitable hosts are not infected. Multi-loci molecular data (ITS2 rDNA, 28S rDNA and cox1 mtDNA) demonstrate that Lepotrema is a good generic concept, but limited variability in sequence data and differences in phylogenies produced for different gene regions make relationships within the genus difficult to define.

Based on an integrative taxonomic approach, combining morphological characters and partial sequences of the nuclear 28S rRNA gene, a new genus and combination for the species Xenoligophoroides cobitis (Ergens, 1963) is proposed, to accommodate ancyrocephalid monogeneans, parasites on the gills of Gobius cobitis Pallas (Gobiidae) from the western Mediterranean Sea and the northern Black Sea. A morphological comparison of newly collected material with the descriptions of Ancyrocephalus cobitis Ergens, 1963 and Haliotrema cupensis Sasal, Pages & Euzet, 1998, recently synonymised and named as Haliotrema cobitis (Ergens, 1963), confirms their similarity and belonging to the same species. However, characters of this species, as the vas deferens not looping the caecal branch, the bilobed base of the male copulatory organ and the marginal hooks with an upright thumb, do not correspond to the diagnosis of Haliotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922. Morphologically, this species is close to members of Ligophorus Euzet & Suriano, 1977 and Kriboetrema Sarabeev, Rubtsova, Yang & Balbuena, 2013, but differs from the former in the accessory piece articulated with MCO and two prostatic reservoirs, and from the latter in the uncoiled MCO with bilobed base and the dextral vaginal pore. Moreover, all species of Ligophorus and Kriboetrema are parasites of grey mullets. A 28S rDNA-based phylogenetic analysis of sequences derived from specimens of X. cobitis from the Mediterranean and Black seas, along with sequences from several closely related genera of the Ancyrocephalidae, suggested the occurrence of a new taxonomic unit, which corresponded to the X. cobitis specimens. This finding supports the establishment of the new genus for the ancyrocephalid parasites on the gills of G. cobitis from the western Mediterranean Sea and the northern Black Sea.

Digeneans of the lepocreadioid families Lepocreadiidae Odhner, 1905 and Aephnidiogenidae Yamaguti, 1934 from Moreton Bay, off southern Queensland, Australia, are recorded, along with the erection of a new family, Gibsonivermidae. Molecular data were generated for all representatives of these families collected during this study and a phylogram for members of the superfamily was generated based on the partial 28S rDNA dataset, placing these species in context with those previously sequenced. This phylogenetic analysis demonstrates that the monotypic Gibsonivermis Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1997 is isolated from all other lepocreadioids and supports the erection of Gibsonivermidae n. fam., which is defined morphologically, based particularly on the uniquely elongated male terminal genitalia, the distribution of the uterus in the forebody and the presence of a uroproct. Mobahincia teirae n. g., n. sp. is reported from Platax teira (Forsskål) in Moreton Bay and off Heron Island and New Caledonia. Recognition of this new genus is based on molecular results and the combination of caeca abutting the posterior body wall and the lack of an anterior body scoop or flanges. The following lepocreadioid species are reported from Moreton Bay for the first time: Bianium arabicum Sey, 1996 in Lagocephalus lunaris (Bloch & Schneider), Diploproctodaeum cf. monstrosum Bray, Cribb & Justine, 2010 in Arothron hispidus (Linnaeus), Multitestis magnacetabulum Mamaev, 1970 and Neomultitestis aspidogastriformis Bray & Cribb, 2003 in Platax teira and Opechona austrobacillaris Bray & Cribb, 1998 in Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus). Bianium plicitum (Linton, 1928) is reported from Torquigener squamicauda (Ogilby) for the first time. Sequences of newly collected specimens of Austroholorchis sprenti (Gibson, 1987) indicate that the species forms a clade with other members of the Aephnidiogenidae, agreeing with its morphology. The phylogenetic status of all newly sequenced species is discussed.

Two monorchiid species are reported from the freckled goatfish, Upeneus tragula Richardson, from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Specimens of a species new to science were most morphologically similar to species of the genus Timonia Bartoli & Prevot, 1966, but significant differences in the arrangement of the testes (symmetrical vs oblique) and morphology of the terminal organ (bipartite vs unipartite) necessitate the proposal of a new genus; Madhavia n. g. is proposed for M. fellaminutus n. sp. Specimens of the second species are identified as Parachrisomon delicatus (Manter & Pritchard, 1964) Madhavi, 2008, extending its known range from Hawaii to Australia. Complete ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA sequence data were generated for both species and analysed with those for other monorchiids available on GenBank. Phylogenetic analyses of the 28S rDNA dataset showed that both genera are distinct from other sequenced monorchiids, but overall the resolution between genera is poor and more sequence data are required to elucidate relationships within the family. We propose to transfer Timonia stunkardi (Ahmad, 1985) and Timonia vinodae (Ahmad, 1987) to the genus Neotimonia Madhavi, 2008, as Neotimonia stunkardi (Ahmad, 1985) n. comb. and Neotimonia vinodae (Ahmad, 1987) n. comb. Additionally, we were unable to locate any literature on Parachrisomon brotulidorum (Toman, 1973) Madhavi, 2008 and consider this species as nomen nudum.

Choerodonicola Cribb, 2005 is a minor genus of opecoelid trematodes defined for species with exceptionally small eggs but otherwise generalised morphology. Four species are currently recognised, all from fishes collected in Japanese waters but each from different perciform families: a labrid, a scarid, a sparid and pinguipeds. We report on a new species, Choerodonicola arothokoros n. sp., from the blue-barred parrotfish Scarus ghobban Forsskål (Scaridae) collected in subtropical waters of Moreton Bay, south-east Queensland, Australia. Using genetic sequence data for the ITS2 rDNA marker, we matched adult C. arothokoros to intramollsucan stages discovered in an intertidal gastropod Herpetopoma atratum (Gmelin) (Vetigastropoda: Chilodontidae) collected in close proximity to the fish hosts. Notably, the cercariae lack a penetration stylet and are among the smallest known in the Opecoelidae. We provide the first assessment of the phylogenetic position of Choerodonicola based on sequence data generated for the phylogenetically informative 18S and 28S rRNA coding regions, for C. arothokoros and also C. renko Machida, 2014, which we recollected from the yellowback seabream Dentex hypselosomus Bleeker from the fish market in Minabe, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. In our analyses, species of Choerodonicola resolved to neither of the major marine Plagioporinae (sensu lato) clades, clustering instead with Trilobovarium parvvatis Martin, Cutmore & Cribb, 2017, Podocotyloides parupenei (Manter, 1963) Pritchard, 1966 and Macvicaria magellanica Laskowski, Jeżewski & Zdzitowiecki, 2013. This clade is phylogenetically distinctive such that it has the potential to be recognised as a new opecoelid subfamily, but further investigation is required to establish the bounds for such a grouping and to determine the morphological and/or life-history patterns reflected by the phylogeny. Finally, we propose C. interruptus (Manter 1954) n. comb. for a species previously recognised in Plagioporus Stafford, 1904 and known only from Pseudolabrus miles (Schneider & Forster), a labrid endemic to New Zealand.

Plagioporus ictaluri n. sp. and Plagioporus carolini n. sp. are described from the intestines of the Ouachita Madtom, Noturus lachneri, and the Banded Sculpin, Cottus carolinae, respectively, from adjacent drainages in Arkansas. The new species are morphologically most similar to one another and in turn similar to Plagioporus sinitsini, Plagioporus chiliticorum, Plagioporus serratus, and Plagioporus hypentelii, but they can be distinguished from these congeners in possession of an excretory vesicle that extends anteriorly to the level of the anterior testis as opposed to 1 reaching only the posterior testis ( P. hypentelii) or 1 confined to the posttesticular space ( P. sinitsini, P. serratus, and P. chiliticorum), a feature that necessitates altering the generic diagnosis for the genus. Plagioporus ictaluri n. sp. is distinguished from Plagioporus carolini n. sp. in having tandem vs. oblique testes, a submedian to median ovary as opposed to 1 that is dextral, a ventral sucker occupying 53-71% of the body width (BW) vs. 80-92% of the BW, an oral sucker occupying 36-47% of the BW as opposed to 49-58% of the BW, and a pharynx occupying 21-26% of the BW compared to 28-36% of the BW. A Bayesian inference analysis of partial 28S rDNA sequences of the 2 new species and those of 34 opecoelids obtained from GenBank found that P. ictaluri and P. carolini formed a highly supported clade that was sister to P. chiliticorum and in turn to P. sinitsini. These 4 species are notably the only Nearctic plagioporids included in the analysis without a uterus extending to the posterior end that lack a confluent vitelline field in the posttesticular space. This study includes the first species of Plagioporus to be described from an ictalurid host and the first species in the genus to be described from a cottid east of the Rocky Mountains.

Metacercariae of a North American digenean Posthodiplostomum cf. minimum centrarchi (Strigeiformes: Diplostomidae), have been reported from seven localities in Europe, with cysts recorded in the mesentery and internal organs of two invasive non-indigenous fishes (Lepomis gibbosus and Micropterus salmoides) from sites in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Portugal. Analysis of rDNA locus ITS1-ITS2-28S confirmed a closer relationship to the American Posthodiplostomum species than the common European species P. cuticola or P. brevicaudatum. Our data indicate limited potential of this parasite for switch to local fish fauna and confirm the occurrence at distant sites across Europe, suggesting that birds as definitive parasite hosts may play an important role for parasite dispersal. Trematodes of family Diplostomatidae consists of a large and diverse group of parasites which have larval stages that are very important pathogens of wild and cultured freshwater fishes worldwide, can cause serious impacts. Our understanding of the diplostomids diversity, though, remains deficient and limited especially in India. In the present study, the morphology and molecular characterization of Tylodelphys spp. from the vitreous humour of eye, collected from two economically important food fish, dwarf snakehead Channa gachua (Perciformes: Channidae) and pool barb Puntius sophore (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) were described from Bijnor and Meerut, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), India respectively. Tylodelphys spp. were characterized morphologically by light microscopy and SEM observations. Partial sequences of the ribosomal ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 gene cluster were also used for molecular identification of the species. Combined morphological and molecular analyses revealed the presence of three species of Tylodelphys: Tylodelphys sp. CG from C. gachua and Tylodelphys sp. PS 1, Tylodelphys sp. PS 2 from P. sophore respectively. The aporocotylid fauna of the mottled spinefoot, Siganus fuscescens (Houttuyn), from Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, was characterised using a combined morphological and molecular approach. Four aporocotylid species were identified, three belonging to the genus Ankistromeces Nolan & Cribb, 2006 and one to Cardicola Short, 1953. Specimens of Cardicola matched an undescribed species from the same host and locality; this species is described as Cardicola mogilae n. sp. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS2 and 28S data showed that C. mogilae n. sp. forms a strongly supported clade with other Cardicola species from siganid fishes. We record Ankistromeces olsoni Nolan & Cribb, 2006 in Moreton Bay for the first time, redescribe A. dunwichensis Nolan & Cribb, 2006 on the basis of new specimens and sequence data and re-report Ankistromeces sp. X from Moreton Bay based on molecular data. We review the status of the ten putative species of aporocotylids reported from siganids. Small variation in ITS2 rDNA sequences, in association with different geographic localities, was previously used to separate Cardicola lafii Nolan & Cribb, 2006 from C. parilus Nolan & Cribb, 2006, C. bartolii Nolan & Cribb, 2006 from C. watsonensis Nolan & Cribb, 2006, C. tantabiddii Nolan & Cribb, 2006 from Cardicola sp. 2, Ankistromeces sp. Y from A. olsoni and Ankistromeces sp. X from Ankistromeces sp. Z. These five combinations are reinterpreted as each representing a single species; Cardicola lafii is recognised as the senior synonym of C. parilus and C. bartolii as the senior synonym of C. watsonensis. This study thus suggests that six, rather than ten, species should be recognised as infecting S. fuscescens. This richness remains greater than is known for any other fish species and siganids are, so far, unique among fishes in harbouring two strongly radiated lineages of aporocotylids.
