Haliotrema Pteroisi: Paperna, 1972 (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) was found parasitizing the gill lamellae of devil firefish, Pterois miles (Bennet) (Perciformes: Scorpaenidae), in the Red Sea off Safaga (26°44'N, 33°56'E), Egypt. The parasite species was described based on morphological features of available specimens and transferred to PlatycephalotremaKritsky and Nitta, 2019 (Dactylogyridae) as Platycephalotrema pteroisi (Paperna, 1972) n. comb. The occurrence of Pl. pteroisi off Safaga, Egypt, represented a range extension for the helminth of about 160 km to the southwest of the southern end of the Gulf of Aqaba. The transfer of the species to Platycephalotrema based on an evaluation of morphological features was supported by an analysis of molecular sequences of the 28S rDNA gene of Pl. pteroisi and 49 other dactylogyrid species. Maximum-likelihood, Bayesian inference, and maximum parsimony analyses of this dactylogyrid sequence data revealed H. pteroisi to nest with significant support within the clade of Platycephalotrema spp. During the literature review of dactylogyrid species infecting scorpionfishes, it was determined that Ancyrocephalus sp. of Dyer et al. from luna lion fish Pterois lunulata Temminck and Schlegel collected off Okinawa-jima, Japan represented an undescribed species of Platycephalotrema., (© American Society of Parasitologists 2024.)

During March 2023, 7 green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and 2 bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) were collected from the Black River (White River drainage) in Lawrence County, Arkansas. In addition, during March 2023 and again in May-June 2023, 13 L. cyanellus and 6 L. macrochirus were taken from Butcherknife and Big Fork creeks (Ouachita River drainage), Polk County, Arkansas, 9 L. cyanellus were collected from the Caddo River, Montgomery County, Arkansas, and 5 green sunfish were taken from Clear Creek at Savoy, Washington County, Arkansas. All fish had their gill, gallbladder, fins, integument, musculature, and other major organs examined for myxozoans. The gill of 1 of 34 (3%) L. cyanellus was infected with a new myxozoan, Myxobolus fergusoni n. sp. Qualitative and quantitative morphological data were obtained from fresh myxospores, and molecular data consisted of a 1,933-base-pair sequence of the partial small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Phylogenetic analysis grouped M. fergusoni n. sp. with other centrarchid-infecting myxobolids from North America and placed this cluster in a larger clade comprising myxozoans that infect North American and European esocids, a North American aphredoderid, European percids, and a gasterosteid from Japan. Myxobolus fergusoni n. sp. infects the gill arches of L. cyanellus, similar to Myxobolus cartilaginis (Hoffman, Putz, and Dunbar, 1965), which was described from head cartilage, gill arches, and large fin rays of L. cyanellus. Another is Myxobolus mesentericusKudo, 1920, which was described from the viscera of green sunfish. A large polysporic plasmodium filled with myxospores was present in a basifilamental location associated with multiple gill filaments at their junction with the gill arch. The intact plasmodium replaced connective tissue within the arch but elicited only mild proliferation of overlying epithelium and a minimal host inflammatory response. The genus Ancyrocephalus sensu lato is a large assemblage of species of dactylogyrid monopisthocotyleans without clear taxonomic boundaries. Despite an urgent need for revision, only three representatives of this taxon have been molecularly characterised so far. We found specimens of Ancyrocephalus curtus , a previously non-genotyped species, in gills of Perccottus glenii caught in the River Syumnyur, Amur Basin, Russia. The aim of this study was to assess the phylogenetic position of this parasite using partial sequences of 28S rRNA gene. In the phylogenetic tree, A. curtus appeared as a sister taxon to the dactylogyrine genus Gobioecetes. The new molecular evidence supports the hypothesis about the non-monophyletic status of Ancyrocephalus sensu lato.

Amyloodinium ocellatum is among the most devastating protozoan parasites, causing huge economic losses in the mariculture industry. However, the pathogenesis of amyloodiniosis remains unknown, hindering the development of targeted anti-parasitic drugs. The A. ocellatum in vitro model is an indispensable tool for investigating the pathogenic mechanism of amyloodiniosis at the cellular and molecular levels. The present work developed a new cell line, ALG, from the gill of yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus). The cell line was routinely cultured at 28°C in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) supplemented with 15% fetal bovine serum (FBS). ALG cells were adherent and exhibited an epithelioid morphology; the cells were stably passed over 30 generations and successfully cryopreserved. The cell line derived from A. latus was identified based on partial sequence amplification and sequencing of cytochrome B (Cyt b). The ALG was seeded onto transwell inserts and found to be a platform for in vitro infection of A. ocellatum, with a 37.23 ± 5.75% infection rate. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that A. ocellatum parasitizes cell monolayers via rhizoids. A. ocellatum infection increased the expression of apoptosis and inflammation-related genes, including caspase 3 (Casp 3), interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 10 (IL-10), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in vivo or in vitro. These results demonstrated that the in vitro gill cell monolayer successfully recapitulated in vivo A. latus host responses to A. ocellatum infection. Two species of Pseudodiscocotyla Yamaguti, 1965 (Monogenea: Discocotylidae) were collected from crimson jobfish Pristipomoides filamentosus (Valenciennes) (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) off Okinawa-jima island, southern Japan. Pseudodiscocotyla opakapaka is redescribed and represents the first Japanese record. A new species, Pseudodiscocotyla mikiae n. sp., differs from Ps. opakapaka in the absence of spines around the male genital pore, the shape of the vaginal pore, the presence of spines inside the vaginal pore, and the shape of the clamp. The locations of the male genital atrium and the vaginal pore in both species were similar, and the observed armament differences of the male copulatory organ are therefore presumed to establish reproductive isolation. The phylogenetic trees for the Mazocraeidea based on the partial 28S rDNA sequences were created using new sequences of Pseudodiscocotyla mikiae n. sp., and Discocotylidae formed a sister group with the species Diclidophoridae, Macrovalvitrematidae, and Plectanocotylidae. The introduction of new fish species to the aquaculture industry is essential to halt the progressive decline of natural fish stocks. The sheepshead Archosargus probatocephalus is a commercially valuable sparid fish with potential for breeding in captivity, but with limited information regarding parasitic infections that could pose a significant threat for its sustainable production. Thus, the present study aimed to study the myxozoan diversity infecting A. probatocephalus. A novel Henneguya sp. was detected forming plasmodia in the gill lamellae of specimens inhabiting the Brazilian coast, and is characterized based on morphological, histopathological, ultrastructural, molecular, and phylogenetic data. Myxospore total length was 21.3 ± 0.8 μm, with myxospore body 10.0 ± 0.5 μm long, 6.2 ± 0.3 μm wide, and 4.8 ± 0.5 μm thick. Caudal appendages were 10.3 ± 0.5 μm long and did not present any type of coating. Two pyriform polar capsules, 3.4 ± 0.3 μm long and 1.5 ± 0.2 μm wide, each containing an isofilar polar tubule with 4-5 coils. Histopathological analyses showed large intralamellar polysporic plasmodia associated with vascular congestion of the gill filament and gill lamellae, as well as epithelial hyperplasia causing partial or total fusion of gill lamellae. Purpose: Bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) are a North American sport fish that exhibit two different male morphotypes. Alpha-males are large, colorful, territorial, and have significant parental investment, while β-males are small, drab, and have two reproductive phenotypes, neither of which involves parental investment. Due to the two different reproductive strategies, the level of interaction between congenerics varies, which may impact parasites that are spread via close contact, such as Monogenoidea that infect the gills. Monogeneans are ectoparasites on the gills and skin of fish hosts that may cause significant pathology in high numbers and be an indicator of host behavior and interaction between hosts., Methods: In this study, 328 L. macrochirus (106 α-males, 92 β-males, and 130 females) were necropsied from 8 lakes and ponds in northwestern Virginia to identify and enumerate monogenean parasites from the gills., Results: Alpha-males had a significantly greater parasite abundance and species richness compared to β-males. This may be due to the increased size and surface area of gills in α-males, increased interaction with females during mating, and stationary behavior when guarding nests, which enhanced the chances of α-males contracting the parasites. This also led to significant differences in the monogenean communities infecting the two morphotypes, which were also significantly influenced by the size of the hosts., Conclusions: It is important in future studies regarding parasitism that behavioral morphotypes within a sex, such as α-male and β-male L. macrochirus in this study, be treated separately as behavioral and morphometric differences between them can potentially lead to differences in parasitism., (© 2023. Examination of the gill lamellae of the Panama grunt Rhencus panamensis (Steindachner) (Haemulidae), golden snapper Lutjanus inermis (Peters), and yellow snapper Lutjanus argentiventris (Peters) (Lutjanidae) (Perciformes) from the coast of the Guerrero State (eastern Tropical Pacific) of Mexico revealed 5 species of Monogenoidea: Euryhaliotrema disparum n. sp. on R. panamensis; Haliotrematoides uagroi n. sp. on L. inermis; and E. anecorhizion Kritsky & Mendoza-Franco, 2012, E. fastigatum (Zhukov, 1976) Kritsky & Boeger, 2002, and E. paracanthi (Zhukov, 1976) Kritsky & Boeger, 2002 on L. argentiventris. Specimens found on R. panamensis were assigned within Euryhaliotrema as a new species possessing the atypical morphology of the male copulatory organ (i.e., a coiled tube with clockwise rings). Haliotrematoides uagroi n. sp. differs from Haliotrematoides striatohamus (Zhukov, 1981) Mendoza-Franco, Reyes-Lizama & Gonzalez-Solis, 2009 from Haemulon spp. (Haemulidae) from the Caribbean Sea (Mexico) in having inner blades on the distal shafts of the ventral and dorsal anchors. The present paper represents the first finding of a species of Euryhaliotrema (E. disparum n. sp.) on a species of Rhencus and the second species on a haemulid host, and H. uagroi n. sp. as the first monogenoidean species described on L. inermis. Two new species of copepods assigned to the genus Acusicola Cressey, 1970 (Cyclopoida: Ergasilidae) are proposed based on post-metamorphic adult females, parasitizing the gills of two actinopterygian fish off Brazil namely, the Tripletail Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch) (Lobotidae), collected in the coastal zone of the State of Pará, near Curuçá Municipallity, and the Swordspine snook Centropomus ensiferus Poey (Centropomidae) collected in Sepetiba Bay, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Acusicola iamarinoi n. sp. parasite of L. surinamensis, differs from its closet congeners based on the first segment of the antennule armed with 10 setae, the presence of a maxillule armed with four elements and a pair of blunt processes dorsally on the fourth pedigerous somite. Acusicola pasternakae n. sp., collected from C. ensiferus, can be distinguished from its closest congeners based on the membranous sheath of the first endopodal segment of antenna with horizontal marks, the first segment of the antennule armed with 11 setae and a spine on the last exopodal segment of leg 2. An undescribed species of KannaphallusUnnithan, 1957 (Monogenoidea: Heteraxinidae) was collected from the gills of the golden trevally Gnathanodon speciosus (Forsskål) (Carangidae) from Moreton Bay, Queensland, during January 2016 and from Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, during December 2021 and June 2022. The diagnosis for Kannaphallus was emended and the new species, Kannaphallus raphidium, was described. Kannaphallus virilis of Young, nec Unnithan was placed in synonymy with K. raphidium. The distal components of the male reproductive system and the arrangement of the clamp rows of the haptor occurred as mirror images among specimens of K. raphidium, suggesting that the respective antipodes of K. raphidium may have reproductive implications and function in the site selection of the parasite on the host's gills. A specimen of K. raphidium from Western Australia was sequenced for the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) mtDNA and ITS2 rDNA barcoding markers, and the phylogenetically informative 28S rDNA marker. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses based on a partial 28S rDNA alignment, including all comparable heteraxinid sequence data available, resolved the Heteraxininae and Cemocotylinae as reciprocatively paraphyletic and provided evidence that Kannaphallus may be paraphyletic. No taxonomic changes concerning the subfamilies and genera of the Heteraxinidae were proposed. Cynoscionella n. g. is proposed for Cynoscionella sanmarci n. sp. and two previously described species of Diplectanum Diesing, 1858 were reassigned into the new genus. The three species are gill parasites of sciaenid fishes (Perciformes: Sciaenidae). The new genus is closely related with Diplectanum (sensu stricto), but is mainly distinguished by its male copulatory organ (MCO) having a slightly sclerotized sleeve-shaped base, lacking accessory piece and accessory copulatory organ. In addition, Cynoscionella n. g. differs from Diplectanum species by having the ventral anchors with well-developed roots, and a prostatic reservoir simple. Cynoscionella sanmarci n. sp. is a parasite of the cachema weakfish Cynoscion phoxocephalus Jordan & Gilbert, a demersal teleost collected from off the coastal zone of Puerto Pizarro, Tumbes region, northern Peru. Diplectanum bilobatum Hargis, 1955 from the spotted weakfish Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier) and D. monticellii Domingues & Boeger, 2003 from the smooth weakfish Cynoscion leiarchus (Cuvier), are transferred to Cynoscionella n. g. as Cy. bilobatum (Hargis, 1955) n. comb. and Cy. monticelli (Domingues & Boeger, 2003) n. comb. Lernaeopodidae Milne Edwards, 1840, is an ecological and economically important fish parasite family of copepods (Crustacea: Copepoda), consisting of 48 genera with 334 valid species. To date, approximately 17 genera have been documented from both teleost and elasmobranch hosts from South African marine waters. As part of parasitological surveys targeting parasites of the endemic intertidal klipfish, Clinus superciliosus (Linnaeus) (Clinidae) along the South African coast, a species of Lernaeopodidae was discovered on the gills of this host. Alella igillimpethu n. sp. is described from Clinus superciliosus from Langebaan marina on the west coast of South Africa, with a prevalence of 42.1% and mean intensity of 2.9 (ranging from 1-13). Morphological identification was done using light and scanning electron microscopy and the species description was generated with the aid of DEscription Language for TAxonomy (DELTA) software. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) region, as well as partial 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA genes confirmed the classification within the family Lernaeopodidae. This is the first report of Lernaeopodidae from C. superciliosus, or in fact any member of Clinidae, as well as the first molecular characterisation of any marine lernaeopodid infecting teleost fish from South Africa. The microcotylid Sciaenacotyle pancerii is a pathogenic monogenean infecting Argyrosomus regius , a candidate for species diversification in the Mediterranean aquaculture. Life-history stages of S. pancerii commonly co-occur in field infections, but to date, morphological data have only been provided for oncomiracidia and adults although identifying life-history stages can be useful in infection management. A total of 114 specimens of S. pancerii were analysed to characterize the developmental events and to assess morphological and morphometric variations before and after maturity. The post-larval development of S. pancerii is characterized by: expansion and bifurcation of the gut, loss of the larval haptor, protandrous development of the genitalia and vitellaria formation. The size variability of larval hooks, hamuli and germanium of S. pancerii is firstly reported and dimensional ranges of parasite body, haptor, testes, posteriormost clamps and eggs are widened. The size of most of the diagnostic features of S. pancerii significantly increases after parasite maturity and therefore, only those specimens with more than 116 clamps should be considered for minimising development-related variability in size. The high number of clamps, their fast development and the asymmetry in their size and arrangement suggest that S. pancerii may use a mixed attachment strategy between the closely related microcotylids and heteraxinids. This combination of features may be host related and linked to the gill structure of the sciaenid fish and the phylogenetic position of the genus Sciaenacotyle ; distant from other microcotylids while close to heteraxinid species.

A parasitological survey searching diplectanids (Monogenea: Diplecatnidae) infesting the gills of marine fishes from South America was carried out during the 2019-2020 period. The gills of four sciaenid species, 2 Cheilotrema fasciatum Tschudi, 1 smalleye croaker Nebris microps Cuvier, 2 royal highhat Pareques lanfeari (Barton), and 1 minor stardrum Stellifer minor (Tschudi), were sampled. Six new species of Rhamnocercus Monaco, Wood & Mizelle, 1954 were described: Rhamnocercus chacllae n. sp. and Rhamnocercus chaskae n. sp. from P. lanfeari, Rhamnocercus fasciatus n. sp. from C. fasciatum, Rhamnocercus microps n. sp. from N. microps, and Rhamnocercus rimaci n. sp. and Rhamnocercus tantaleani n. sp. from S. minor. Rhamnocercus chacllae n. sp. can be differentiated from its congeners by its L-shaped male copulatory organ (MCO) and by having an anteromedial slight notch at ventral bar. Rhamnocercus chaskae n. sp. differs from the other species of the genus by its long and straight MCO with bifid distal end and by having haptoral accessory spines at level of ventral bar with quadrifid distal portion. Rhamnocercus fasciatus n. sp. is characterized by possessing a straight and long MCO with truncated distal end, haptoral accessory spines at level of ventral bar with bifid distal portion, dorsal bars with a knob at lateral extremity, and a large vagina with bell-shaped. Rhamnocercus microps n. sp. differs from all congeners mainly by having a short and straight MCO with the distal end of internal tube spatulate and uncovered by external tube. Rhamnocercus rimaci n. sp. is can be distinguished from all other species of Rhamnocercus by having an almost J-shaped MCO with the distal end of external tube slight expanded and the distal end of internal tube narrow and uncovered by external tube. Rhamnocercus tantaleani n. sp. is mainly characterized by its MCO, which is tubular and straight, having the distal end of external tube bifurcated (right branch well-expanded and left branch narrow) and the distal end of internal tube enveloped by left branch of the external tube. This is the first data on the parasites of P. lanfeari, a little known, but popular fish in local markets from Peru. Rhamnocercus microps n. sp. is the first described species of Rhamnocercus in Brazil. The present finding brings to 12, the number of known species of Rhamnocercus. The current study provides a morphological and molecular characterization of a new species of Didymodiclinus (Trematoda: Didymozoidae) infecting the dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus (Teleostei: Serranidae) from the Mediterranean Sea. A total of 279 dusky grouper specimens were examined for didymozoid gill parasites from the Mediterranean Sea between 1998 and 2020. New species differs from the most similar congeneric species by the rudiments of female reproductive organs in functional male specimens, and the seminal receptacle, Mehlis gland and accessory gland cells in functional female specimens, not observed in Didymodiclinus branchialis (Yamaguti, 1970), Didymodiclinus epinepheli (Abdul-Salam, Sreelatha and Farah, 1990) and Didymodiclinus pacificus (Yamaguti, 1938), respectively. These species are also characterized by their different hosts and location within the host tissues, being from other geographical localities. Moreover, this is the first species reported in E. marginatus from the central and western Mediterranean Sea. Genetic analyses were performed on partial 28S and partial internal transcribed spacer-2 ribosomal RNA regions and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1) gene by polymerase chain reaction. Comparison of genetic sequences of Didymodiclinus marginati n. sp. with the available deposited sequences of 28S revealed that the new isolates cluster with several unidentified didymozoids and groups as a sister clade of the Nematobothrinae subfamily. Moreover, 28S and cox1 phylogenetic trees evidenced that Didymodiclinae is well separated from Didymozoinae and other gonochoric didymozoids. Following both morphological and genetic results, a key of identification for the genus Didymodiclinus is proposed.

Monogeneans are highly diverse fish ectoparasites with a direct life cycle, widely distributed, and are known to generally display strict host specificity. Factors related to the hosts and the parasite have been suggested to explain this high specificity. Monogeneans have also been observed to colonise fish species not in their natural host range under experimental conditions. We developed a specific metabarcoding protocol and applied it on the Sparidae-Lamellodiscus host-parasite system, to assess parasite diversity on skin and gills of several sparid host species. We first demonstrated that the use of a metabarcoding approach provided a better understanding of the diversity of monogeneans associated with teleost skin and gills than traditional approaches based on morphological identification. We identified a high diversity of both expected and unexpected (never observed on this host species) Lamellodiscus spp. on each host species and on skin and gills. No significant difference in parasite diversity was found between skin and gills. These results suggest that the establishment of the observed host specificity in monogeneans relies on multiple levels of regulation, involving the survival capacity of the larvae and host recognition mechanisms., (Copyright © 2022 Australian Society for Parasitology. The dinoflagellate Amyloodinium ocellatum is an important pathogenic parasite infecting cultured marine and brackish water fishes worldwide. This includes cultured Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), which is one of the most desirable marine food fish with high economic value in the USA. A. ocellatum infects fish gills and causes tissue damage, increased respiratory rate, reduced appetite, and mortality, especially in closed aquaculture systems. This study mimicked the natural infection of A. ocellatum in cultured pompano and conducted a transcriptomic comparison of gene expression in the gills of control and A. ocellatum infected fish to explore the molecular mechanisms of infection. RNA-seq data revealed 604 differentially expressed genes in the infected fish gills. The immunoglobulin genes (including IgM/T) augmentation and IL1 inflammation suppression were detected after infection. Genes involved in reactive oxygen species mediating parasite killing were also highly induced. However, excessive oxidants have been linked to oxidative tissue damage and apoptosis. Correspondingly, widespread down-regulation of collagen genes and growth factor deprivation indicated impaired tissue repair, and meanwhile the key executor of apoptosis, caspase-3 was highly expressed (25.02-fold) in infected fish. The infection also influenced the respiratory gas sensing and transport genes and established hypoxic conditions in the gill tissue. Additionally, food intake and lipid metabolism were also affected. Our work provides the transcriptome sequencing of Florida pompano and provides key insights into the acute pathogenesis of A. ocellatum. Background: The family Plectanocotylidae includes parasites of the gills of marine fish; although nine genera and about 20 species have been described, almost no molecular information is available. Putting aside Plectanocotyle elliptica Diesing, 1850, supposedly a parasite of the white perch Morone americana , never found again since its original description, two species were valid within Plectanocotyle Diesing, 1850 before this work: Plectanocotyle gurnardi (Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863) Llewellyn, 1941 and Plectanocotyle major Boudaya, Neifar & Euzet, 2006., Methods: In this paper, we describe the third species of the genus Plectanocotyle and perform a comparative morphological and molecular analysis of the three species and of Triglicola obscura (Euzet & Suriano, 1974) Mamaev, 1976. Host fishes were also barcoded (COI) for confirmation of host identifications., Results: Plectanocotyle lastovizae n. sp. is described from the gills of the streaked gurnard Chelidonichthys lastoviza collected off Algeria. The species is compared with specimens of Plectanocotyle cf. gurnardi (from C. lastoviza ) from the same locality and P. major and T. obscura (both from the longfin gurnard C. obscurus ). Molecules from Plectanocotyle cf. gurnardi could not be compared with P. gurnardi from the type-host and type-locality and we kept the status of the Mediterranean specimens as pending. Algeria is a new geographic record for P. major and T. obscura . Cryptocaryon irritans, a holotrichous ciliate parasitic protozoan, can trigger marine white spot disease and cause substantial economic losses in mariculture. However, methods of preventing and curing the disease have negatively affect fish, human, other organisms, and the natural environment. The antiparasitic activity of some antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) has garnered extensive attention of scholars. In this study, we identified and characterised a novel antiparasitic peptide, named So-pis, from Sciaenops ocellatus. The sequence analysis, structural features, and tissue distribution suggested that So-pis is genetically related to the piscidins family. However, So-pis showed a relatively low overall conservation compared with other known piscidins. So-pis is abound in glycine residues (22.7 %) and it has a neutral isoelectric point, weak amphipathicity, relatively long α-helix, and high hydrophobicity. These key elements are responsible for its biological activity. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) data indicated that So-pis is a typically gill-expressed peptide. The expression of So-pis in the gill, skin, spleen, and head kidney could be regulated during C. irritans infection, thereby implicating a role of So-pis in immune defence against C. irritans. The synthetic So-pis had limited or no antimicrobial activity against bacterial and yeasts but exhibited potent antiparasitic activity against C. irritans in vitro. The activity of synthetic So-pis against erythrocytes was less potent than its antiparasitic activity against C. irritans. These results indicated that So-pis might be one of the crucial defence cytokines against C. irritans in the red drum. Cumulatively, our data suggested that So-pis might be a potential candidate for developing a novel, effective, and safe therapeutic agent against marine white spot disease., (Copyright © 2021. Cyclocotyla bellones Otto, 1823 (Monogenea, Diclidophoridae) is one of the few monogenean species reported as hyperparasitic: the worms dwell on cymothoid isopods, themselves parasites of the buccal cavity of fishes. We present here observations based on newly collected monogenean specimens from Ceratothoa parallela (Otto, 1828), an isopod parasite of Boops boops off Algeria and also investigated its diet to address whether Cy. bellones is indeed a hyperparasite, i.e., whether it feeds on the isopod. We also compared the body shape of various monogeneans belonging to the same family as Cy. bellones, the Diclidophoridae, including Choricotyle cf. chrysophryi Van Beneden & Hesse, 1863, collected from Pagellus acarne off Algeria. No morphological character of the anterior organs suggested any special adaptation in Cy. bellones to the perforation of the crustacean cuticle. The wall of the oesophagus and of the intestine of Cy. bellones was lined with a dark pigment similar to what is usually observed in haematophagous polyopisthocotyleans, and which is derived from ingested fish blood. We noticed that an anterior elongate stem exists only in diclidophorids dwelling on parasitic isopods and never in those attached to the gills. We hypothesize that the anterior stem of the body of Cy. bellones is an anatomical adaptation for the monogenean to feed on the fish while dwelling on the isopod. We thus consider that Cy. bellones is an epibiont of the parasitic crustacean, as it uses it merely as an attachment substrate, and is not a true hyperparasite., (© C. Amyloodinium ocellatum (AO) infection in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) causes extensive mortality. Insufficient information exists on the molecular immune response of silver pomfret to AO infestation, so herein we simulated the process of silver pomfret being infected by AO. Translucent trophosomes were observed on the gills of AO-infected fish. Transcriptome profiling was performed to investigate the effects of AO infection on the gill, kidney complex and spleen. Overall, 404,412,298 clean reads were obtained, assembling into 96,341 unigenes, which were annotated against public databases. In total, 2730 differentially expressed genes were detected, and few energy- and immune-related genes were further assessed using RT-qPCR. Moreover, activities of three immune-related (SOD, AKP and ACP) and three energy-related (PKM, LDH and GCK) enzymes were determined. AO infection activated the immune system and increased interleukin-1 beta and immunoglobulin M heavy chain levels. Besides, the PPAR signalling pathway was highly enriched, which played a role in improving immunity and maintaining homeostasis. AO infection also caused dyspnoea, leading to extensive lactic acid accumulation, potentially contributing towards a strong immune response in the host. The parasite Cryptocaryon irritans causes massive losses in the marine fish culture industry and is one of the most threatening pathogens affecting teleost species. The acute death of infected fish is primarily caused by the destruction of gill cells, resulting in osmotic imbalance and respiratory stress. C. irritans has wide host specificity; however, the yellow drum Nibea albiflora is highly resistant to this parasite. Metabolomic approaches in combination with transcriptomic analysis were used to characterize the host immune reaction and metabolic changes in yellow drum in response to C. irritans infection and to identify the key genes and compounds in the gills that have the strongest contribution to disease resistance. The yellow drum was challenged with theronts at a median death rate (2050 theronts per gram fish). The samples were collected from the gills 24 h and 72 h after the infection (hpi). The results of metabolomic analysis indicated that metabolites involved in energy metabolism were predominantly downregulated. In contrast, a compensatory increase in the expression of the genes involved in the citric acid cycle and glycolysis was detected 24 hpi. The suppression of metabolites was alleviated after feed intake recovery 72 hpi. The levels of amino acids were decreased, and the expression of aminoacyl-tRNA was increased. Additionally, elevated levels of arachidonic acid derivatives, primarily prostaglandins, were responsible for anti-inflammatory, osmotic, and hypoxia regulations. Purine metabolism was also involved in the immune response via generation of reactive oxygen species catalyzed by xanthine oxidase. A significant increase in the generation of retinoic acid, which could enhance mucosal adaptive immunity by stimulating the synthesis of antibodies and accelerating the restoration of epithelial integrity, was observed at 72 hpi. This result was consistent with high expression of the genes related to secreted immunoglobulin T 72 hpi. In conclusion, the present study comprehensively described the key compounds and genes related to C. irritans infection in yellow drum gills. In comparative studies, the advantage of increased sample sizes might be outweighed by detrimental effects on sample homogeneity and comparability when small numbers of hosts from a different demographic of the same species are included in samples. A mixed sample of sunfishes (Lepomis spp.) was subdivided in different ways and examined using cumulative performance curves to determine whether the exclusion of larger hosts from a single-species sample and/or the inclusion of hosts of the same size demographic from closely related host species would produce more homogeneous samples. The exclusion of larger hosts from the single-species samples tended to reduce the aggregation of the infrapopulation samples, and mixed-species samples of smaller fishes tended to have lower degrees of aggregation for a given sample size relative to the single-species sample. Cumulative performance curves for diversity and richness, in concert with nonmetric multidimensional scaling of the infracommunities, demonstrated sunfish size to be a more reliable determinant of infracommunity similarity than sunfish species in this particular sample. The results demonstrate that cumulative aggregation curves can be an effective tool for delineating homogeneous and comparable subsamples and that, under some circumstances, it is possible to offset the smaller sample sizes that result from the exclusion of older/larger hosts by the addition of congeneric or confamilial hosts within the same size/age classes as the stratified sample., (© American Society of Parasitologists 2021.)

Cryptocaryonosis is the greatest threat to most teleost species among all parasitic diseases, causing mass loss to the marine aquaculture industry. Epidemiological investigation of teleost susceptibility to Cryptocaryon irritans infection revealed that yellow drum (Nibea albiflora) is highly resistant. In order to further understand the activation of the immune system in the gill, which is one of the main mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues and a target of parasites, transcriptome analysis of the yellow drum gill was performed. Gill samples were collected from fish challenged after 24 hr and 72 hr with theronts at a median death rate (2050 theronts per gram fish). Gene expression profiles showed that TLR5 was the only receptor that activated the downstream immune response. The infection activated complement cascade through alternative pathway and increased the expression of C5a anaphylatoxin chemotactic receptor 1. In addition, possible antimicrobial molecules, including lipoprotein and haptoglobin, which are responsible for trypanolysis in humans, were among the top significantly upregulated genes at 24 hr. After 72 hr, the expression of secreted immunoglobulin T-related genes was induced. These results suggested a rapid innate and adaptive immune response at the mucosal level. Many Pauciconfibula spp. have a long and complicated taxonomic history. The remaining unsolved taxonomic confusion in this genus is impelled by the host range and status of Pauciconfibula spp. from trachinid fishes: Pauciconfibula trachini and Pauciconfibula draconis, from Trachinus radiatus and Trachinus draco (Trachinidae), respectively. Pauciconfibula trachini was reported on Trachinus draco, type host of Pauciconfibula draconis suggesting thus a stenoxenic specificity for the former monogenean and the occurrence of two congeneric polyopisthocotyleans on a single host. Moreover, the validity of Pauciconfibula draconis was repeatedly questioned by several authors, unjustified synonymy between the two species was proposed, and the delimitations between the two species remained unsolved. Original descriptions were also incomplete and poorly illustrated. In this study, we provide a detailed illustrated redescription of both species based on newly collected specimens of Pauciconfibula trachini and Pauciconfibula draconis collected from their type hosts from off three Mediterranean localities: Algeria, Tunisia, and Italy. Integrative taxonomy using COI sequences was applied to resolve the delimitation between Pauciconfibula trachini and P. draconis. This study provides the first DNA barcoding for members of this genus.

Artificial breeding of small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) was recently achieved, providing a bright future for its commercial farming. In May 2019, a disease outbreak occurred among small yellow croakers in an aquaculture farm near Xiangshan Bay, charactering by white spots spotted on the surface of fish skin, gills and fins. The parasite was preliminarily identified as Cryptocaryon irritans based on morphological feature of the parasite and the symptoms on fish. However, the previously published specific primer pairs failed to confirm the existence of C. iriitans. Six nucleotides mismatches were discovered after mapping specific forward primer back to targeted gene. Therefore, an updated PCR specific primer was developed within the 9th highly variable region of 18S rRNA gene and conserved in all C. irritans sequences available in GenBank database. The specificity was verified in silico by Primer-BLAST against GenBank nucleotide. Laboratory cultured ciliates (Mesanophrys, Pseudokeronopsis and Uronema) as well as natural microbial community samples collected from sea water and river water was used as negative control to verify the specificity of the primer in situ. Besides, tank transfer method was used to evaluate the treatment of the parasite infection. By tank transfer method, 2.00 ± 0.61 out of 10 fish that already sever infected were successfully survived after 8 days treatment, meanwhile the control group died out at d 6. More loss to the treatment group during first five days was observed and may attribute to the combined effect from infection and stress the recent domesticated fish suffered during rotation. Therefore, tank transfer method was also effective to prevent small yellow croaker from further infection, however the loss of the small yellow croaker suffered from stress during rotation also needs to be carefully concerned. Choricotyle australiensis Roubal, Armitage & Rohde, 1983, a diclidophorid monogenean species, is redescribed and genetically characterised using the partial nuclear 28S ribosomal RNA gene (28S rRNA) and a fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene sequences for specimens collected from Chrysophrys auratus (Forster) off Australia and New Zealand. Previous studies have either provided morphological or genetic results, whereas this study combines morphological and advanced molecular methods. A total of 70 Ch. auratus were examined with 22 individuals of C. australiensis recovered from the gills (overall prevalence of 23%). This study has provided the first evidence for the exploration of mitochondrial cox1 region for C. australiensis. Comparison of the newly generated sequences with other available data supported the distinction of C. australiensis among diclidophorid Furhmann, 1928 species thus confirming its taxonomic status.

Two species of microcotylid monogeneans, Microcotyle caudata Goto, 1894 and Microcotyle sebastisci Yamaguti, 1958, have been reported from fishes of the Sebastes inermis species complex and Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier) (Scorpaeniformes: Sebastidae). So far, these parasite species have been distinguished by the size of the eggs and the number of testes, but based on morphological evidence including re-examination of the type-specimens and topotypes and molecular analysis, we consider M. sebastisci to be a junior synonym of M. caudata. As a result, M. caudata exhibits a wide host range, seven species from three genera and two families. A new species, Microcotyle kasago n. sp., is described based on material from S. marmoratus and differentiated from other congeners by means of morphological and molecular analysis.

Gobioecetes longibasis n. sp. (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from the gills of the freshwater goby Rhinogobius similis Gill (Perciformes: Gobiidae) in the River Teima, Okinawa-jima Island, the Ryukyu Archipelago, southern Japan, is described. The new species is distinguished from two congeneric species of Gobioecetes Ogawa & Itoh, 2017, G. rhinogobius (Ling, 1973) and G. biwaensis Ogawa & Itoh, 2017, by having longer ventral hamuli, longer and wider internal process of the dorsal hamuli, and the ratio of dorsal hamulus length to base length. This new species is host-specific to R. similis and considered to be endemic to Okinawa-jima Island or the Ryukyu Archipelago. We also report Rhinogobius sp. OM from a tributary of Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, central Japan, as a new host of G. biwaensis.

Background: Microcotyle erythrini van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) and other closely related species of the genus are often considered as cryptic. Records in hosts other than the type-host with no species confirmation by molecular analyses have contributed to this situation., Methods: Gill parasites of five sparid fishes, Boops boops (L.), Pagellus erythrinus (L.), P. acarne (Risso), Dentex dentex (L.) and Pagrus pagrus (L.), from the Western Mediterranean off Spain were collected. Specimens of Microcotyle spp. were characterised both molecularly and morphologically. Partial fragments (domains D1-D3) of the 28S rRNA gene and the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene were amplified and used for molecular identification and phylogenetic reconstruction. Principal components analysis was used to look for patterns of morphological separation., Results: Molecular analyses confirmed the identity of three species: M. erythrini ex P. erythrinus and Pa. pagrus; M. isyebi Bouguerche, Gey, Justine & Tazerouti, 2019 ex B. boops; and a species new to science described herein, M. whittingtoni n. sp. ex D. dentex. The specific morphological traits and confirmed hosts (P. erythrinus and Pa. pagrus) are delimited here in order to avoid misidentifications of M. erythrini (sensu stricto). Microcotyle erythrini (s.s.) is mostly differentiated by the shape of its haptor, which is also longer than in the other congeners. New morphological and molecular data are provided for M. isyebi from the Spanish Mediterranean enlarging the data on its geographical range. Microcotyle whittingtoni n. sp. is described from D. dentex and distinguished from the remaining currently recognised species of the genus by the number and robustness of the clamps., Conclusions: New diagnostic morphological traits useful to differentiate Microcotyle spp. are suggested: (i) haptor dimensions including lobes; (ii) the thickness of the clamps; (iii) the size and shape of spines of the genital atrium; (iv) the extension of the posterior extremities of vitelline fields; and (v) the shape of egg filaments. The use of new morphological approaches may allow considering these species of Microcotyle as being pseudocryptic. The use of representative undamaged specimens that have been genetically confirmed as conspecific is considered crucial to avoid abnormally wide morphological ranges that prevent species differentiation.

Examination of 35 barramundi (Lates calcarifer) from aquaculture cages in Setiu Wetland, Malaysia, revealed a single fish infected with three Henneguya spp. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea). Characterization of the infections using tissue tropism, myxospore morphology and morphometry and 18S rDNA sequencing supported description of three new species: Henneguya setiuensis n. sp., Henneguya voronini n. sp. and H. calcarifer n. sp. Myxospores of all three species had typical Henneguya morphology, with two polar capsules in the plane of the suture, an oval spore body, smooth valve cell surfaces, and two caudal appendages. Spores were morphometrically similar, and many dimensions overlapped, but H. voronini n. sp. had shorter caudal appendages compared with H. calcarifer n. sp. and H. setiuensis n. sp. Gross tissue tropism distinguished the muscle parasite H. calcarifer n. sp. from gill parasites H. setiuensis n. sp. and H. voronini n. sp.; and these latter two species were further separable by fine-scale location of developing plasmodia, which were intra-lamellar for H. setiuensis n. sp. and basal to the filaments for H. voronini n. sp. small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences distinguished all three species: the two gill species H. setiuensis n. sp. and H voronini n. sp. were only 88% similar (over 1708 bp), whereas the muscle species H. calcarifer n. sp. was most similar to H. voronini n. sp. (98% over 1696 bp). None of the three novel species was more than 90% similar to any known myxosporean sequence in GenBank. Low infection prevalence of these myxosporeans and lack of obvious tissue pathology from developing plasmodia suggested none of these parasites are currently a problem for barramundi culture in Setiu Wetland; however additional surveys of fish, particularly at different times of the year, would be informative for better risk assessment.

Parasite biodiversity of fish in coral reefs of the South China Sea is still incompletely explored. We describe here a new species of Neohexostoma (Monogenea: Hexostomatidae) from the gill filaments of the dogtooth tuna Gymnosarda unicolor (Scombridae), collected off Yongshu Reef, South China Sea. Neohexostoma gymnosardae n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by the following features: (i) haptor clearly marked from body proper by a strongly constricted peduncle, divided in its posterior margin into two symmetrical lobes, (ii) vagina armed with scattered small blunt spines, (iii) eggs tied by their long polar filaments, (vi) esophagus with several lateral diverticula, (v) intestinal ceca unfused and extending into the haptor. We present an analysis of the relationships of this monogenean based on partial 28S rDNA sequences. An identification key for species of Neohexostoma is provided. Background: The present paper represented the third installment on the monogenoidean parasites collected during a workshop exploring the diversity of the parasites of fishes in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Previous reports on monogenoids collected during the workshop included species parasitizing beloniform and gerreid fishes., Purpose: During January 2016, the author, having responsibility for the identification and description of monogenoids, participated in a workshop supported by an Australian Biological Resources Study Grant to Drs. Thomas Cribb and Scott Cutmore, University of Queensland, to explore the diversity of parasites infecting the fishes of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia., Methods: Approximately 100 species of marine fishes were necropsied for parasites. Standard procedures for collecting, mounting, drawing, and measuring of monogenoids were employed., Results: A new species of Euryhaliotrema was collected and described from the silver moony Monodactylus argenteus (Monodactylidae) and the first recording of Euryhaliotrema spirotubiforum on the dory snapper Lutjanus fulviflamma and Russell's snapper Lutjanus russellii (both Lutjanidae) in Moreton Bay was reported., Conclusion: The results suggested that the diversity of dactylogyrids off eastern Australia is under estimated in the literature.

Parasite biodiversity of fish of the southern part of the Mediterranean sea is still incompletely explored. We describe here Microcotyle visa n. sp. from the gill filaments of the bluespotted seabream Pagrus caeruleostictus (Valenciennes) (Sparidae) collected off the Algerian coast. The identity of fish hosts was confirmed by barcoding. Microcotyle visa n. sp. is herein described and illustrated. Analysis of the cox1 gene of the monogeneans revealed minor intraspecific variation (1.4%), an order of magnitude lower than the distance between this species and other Microcotyle species (10-15 %). Microcotyle visa n. sp. is distinguished from Microcotyle erythrini van Beneden & Hesse, 1863, a congener infesting sparids, on the basis of morphological (size of clamps, number of testes) and molecular (cox1) differences. This is the fourth member of the genus known to parasitise a sparid host. A species of Paramicrocotyle sp. included in the molecular analysis was nested within a robust Microcotyle + Paramicrocotyle clade; in the absence of demonstrated molecular and morphological differences, we consider that Paramicrocotyle Caballero & Bravo-Hollis, 1972 is a junior synonym of Microcotyle van Beneden & Hesse, 1863 and transfer two species of Paramicrocotyle as Microcotyle danielcarrioni (Martinez & Barrantes, 1977) n. comb. and Microcotyle moyanoi (Villalba & Fernandes, 1986) n. comb.

Transforming growth factor-β activated kinase 1 (TAK1) is a crucial signal transducer in multiple signaling pathways. TAK1 binds TAB1, TAB2, and TAB3, which act as activators and adaptors that specifically regulate the activation of TAK1. To date, the role of TABs is largely unknown in fish. In the present study, a TAB1 cDNA sequence was identified in grouper (Epinephelus coioides), and designated EcTAB1. The full-length open reading frame of EcTAB1 is 1, 521 bp; it encodes 506 amino acids that contains an N-terminal PP2C domain. Many important functional sites in mammalian TAB1 were conserved in TAB1 from grouper and from other fish. Multiple sequence alignment showed that EcTAB1 protein shared high sequence identity with TAB1 of other fish, especially with Stegastes partitus (95% identity). TAB1 was clustered into the same subgroup with other fish TAB1 in the phylogenetic tree. Tissue expression analysis indicated that TAB1 was widely distributed in different tissues. After infection with Cryptocaryon irritans, EcTAB1 expression was up-regulated in the infection site (gills). Background and Objective: Amyloodinium ocellatum infects the gills and skin of both marine and brackish water fishes. The aim of the present study was to examine pathogenesis, prevalence, trials for treatment and histopathological alterations of Amyloodinosis in naturally infested Asian Seabass Barramundi Lates calcarifer and Hamour Epinephelus polyphekadion in Ismailia Governorate, Egypt., Materials and Methods: A total number of 1447 Red Sea cultured Seabass (Lates calcarifer) broadstock and a total number of 53 Red Sea cultured Hamour, Epinephelus polyphekadion broadstock were collected and subjected for the study. Fishes showed symptoms of sudden death and respiratory distress besides Amyloodiniosis on gills and skin. All fishes were treated with various treatment protocols while gills of naturally infected fishes were examined histopathologically., Results: The clinical signs of infested fishes were flashing, surfacing, off food and respiratory distress. The intensity of infestation of Amyloodiniosis was more sever in Asian Seabass than Epinephelus polyphekadion while treatment of choice was copper sulphate (prolonged bath), freshwater bath and formalin consequently., Conclusion: Treatment of choice for Amyloodinium ocellatum infestation in Asian Seabass was copper sulphate (prolonged bath) followed by freshwater bath then formalin.

Cryptocaryon irritans is a ciliated protozoan parasite infecting the gills and skin of almost all marine teleosts, resulting in severe disease. Notably, C. irritans is unable to cause significant pathogenesis in rabbitfish, Siganus oramin, a well-known less susceptible host. However, little is known about the development of C. irritans in rabbitfish. Thus, in the present study, rabbitfish were artificially infected with C. irritans at a 1/2 maximal tolerance dose (MTD), using the susceptible host, large yellow croaker, Larimichthys crocea, as a control. The daily food consumption (DFC), survival, and relative infection intensity (RII) of the fish were observed, and the relative number of tomonts (RNT), reproductive rate, and characteristics of C. irritans tomonts were measured. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of C. irritans on rabbitfish and large yellow croaker was 2236, and 264 theronts/g fish, respectively. The DFC of rabbitfish decreased by 14.6% at day 1 post-C. irritans infection (PI), but immediately returned to normal DFC levels by day 2 PI, and was not affected by secondary infection. However, large yellow croaker stopped feeding at day 3 PI, and all fish died following secondary infection with C. irritans. The RII of rabbitfish exhibited a significant downward trend at 6 h PI, and the reproductive rate of C. irritans was 8%; in contrast, the RII of large yellow croaker was not significantly different from 0 to 72 h PI, and the reproductive rate of C. irritans reached to 59.05-fold. Over the same time frame, the diameter of tomonts from rabbitfish was smaller compared with those from large yellow croaker. These results indicated that the rabbitfish were somehow able to limit the development of C. irritans, such that most trophonts left the host during early developmental stages, whereas those that survive could only develop into small tomonts.

A new species of caligid copepod, Caligus mulli n. sp., is described based on specimens collected from surmullet Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus from Atlantic waters off the Azores, Portugal, and from red mullet Mullus barbatus barbatus (Linnaeus) caught in the Mediterranean Sea, off the south-eastern coast of Turkey. Sixteen specimens (both sexes) were collected from the gill cavity of M. surmuletus, and one female was collected from the gill cavity of M. barbatus barbatus. The new species is described from both fish hosts. Detailed comparisons are presented with two closely related species, C. ocyurus Cressey, 1991 and C. biaculeatus Brian, 1914: the former can be distinguished by differences in shape of the dorsal cephalothoracic shield and postantennal process, while the latter differs in relative size of the distal spines on leg 4 and in the shape of the sternal furca. The new species can easily be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following additional characteristics: (1) the corpus of the female maxilliped bears a prominent projection proximally and the myxal area is ornamented with a hyaline flange and two sensillae, and (2) the male maxilliped has a conical proximal projection on the corpus and a bifid myxal process opposing the claw.

During a research on gill ectoparasites of Peruvian marine fishes, four dactylogyrid (Monogenea) species, parasitising two teleost species, Bodianus diplotaenia (Gill) (Labridae) and Calamus brachysomus (Lockington) (Sparidae), were found. Euryhaliotrema luisae n. sp. ex C. brachysomus is differentiated from other congeneric species by the morphology of the male copulatory organ, which comprises a coil of nine counterclockwise rings, and by the morphology of the anchors and bars. Euryhaliotrema magnopharyngis n. sp. ex C. brachysomus can be distinguished from all other congeners by having a well-developed pharynx occupying much of the anterior region and by the ventral bar, which is V-shaped, with well-elongated, thin arms. In addition, E. luisae n. sp. and E. magnopharyngis n. sp. can be differentiated from all other members of Euryhaliotrema Kritsky & Boeger, 2002 by the presence of a glandular oval plate lying on peduncle. Haliotrema diplotaenia n. sp. ex B. diplotaenia is characterised by the structure of the male copulatory organ, comprising a tapered-shaped cirrus tube with twisted acute tip and a filament-shaped accessory piece with medial and distal expansions, and by the morphology of the ventral bar (inverted W-shaped, with short lateral ends and two anterior conical protuberances). Haliotrema saezae n. sp. ex B. diplotaenia differs from all other members of Haliotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922 by having a tubular copulatory organ with curved distal tip and a filament-shaped accessory piece without lateral expansions, and by the morphology of anchors and bars. The present findings are added to the other six marine dactylogyrids previously reported from Peru.

Based on an integrative taxonomic approach, combining morphological characters and partial sequences of the nuclear 28S rRNA gene, a new genus and combination for the species Xenoligophoroides cobitis (Ergens, 1963) is proposed, to accommodate ancyrocephalid monogeneans, parasites on the gills of Gobius cobitis Pallas (Gobiidae) from the western Mediterranean Sea and the northern Black Sea. A morphological comparison of newly collected material with the descriptions of Ancyrocephalus cobitis Ergens, 1963 and Haliotrema cupensis Sasal, Pages & Euzet, 1998, recently synonymised and named as Haliotrema cobitis (Ergens, 1963), confirms their similarity and belonging to the same species. However, characters of this species, as the vas deferens not looping the caecal branch, the bilobed base of the male copulatory organ and the marginal hooks with an upright thumb, do not correspond to the diagnosis of Haliotrema Johnston & Tiegs, 1922. Morphologically, this species is close to members of Ligophorus Euzet & Suriano, 1977 and Kriboetrema Sarabeev, Rubtsova, Yang & Balbuena, 2013, but differs from the former in the accessory piece articulated with MCO and two prostatic reservoirs, and from the latter in the uncoiled MCO with bilobed base and the dextral vaginal pore. Moreover, all species of Ligophorus and Kriboetrema are parasites of grey mullets. A 28S rDNA-based phylogenetic analysis of sequences derived from specimens of X. cobitis from the Mediterranean and Black seas, along with sequences from several closely related genera of the Ancyrocephalidae, suggested the occurrence of a new taxonomic unit, which corresponded to the X. cobitis specimens. This finding supports the establishment of the new genus for the ancyrocephalid parasites on the gills of G. cobitis from the western Mediterranean Sea and the northern Black Sea.

This study evaluated the parasite fauna on the gills of spotted goatfish Pseudupeneus maculatus captured in the dry and rainy seasons in the coast of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Eight parasite species were identified belonging to the following taxa: Monogenea (Haliotrema caraïbensis, Haliotrema caballeroi and Haliotrema golvani); Crustacea (Rocinela signata, Hamaticolax scutigerulus and Caligidae gen. sp.) and Cestoda (Nybelinia indica and Pseudolacistorhynchus noodti). The most prevalent parasites were: Monogenea (100%), H. scutigerulus (35%), N. indica (11.7%), R. signata (8.3%), Caligidae gen. sp. (3.33%) and P. noodti (0.83%). Values of infestation are compared to other studies, and the uncommon occurrence of Trypanorhyncha on the gills suggests that the spotted goatfish could be an intermediate host for the parasite.

As part of a survey of the parasites infecting the fishes of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, the gill lamellae of two species, the common silver-biddy Gerres oyena (Forsskål) and the common silver belly Gerres subfasciatus Cuvier (both Gerreidae), were found infected with monogenoids as follows: Metahaliotrema filamentosum Venkatanarasaiah, 1981 (Dactylogyridae) was redescribed from G. oyena and recorded from G. subfasciatus (both new host records); Metahaliotrema imparilis n. sp., Protogyrodactylus monacanthus n. sp., Protogyrodactylus vulgaris n. sp. (all Dactylogyridae), Gyrodactylus xynus n. sp. (Gyrodactylidae), and Polylabris gerres (Sanders, 1944) Mamaev & Parukin, 1976 (Microcotylidae) were reported from G. subfasciatus; and Protogyrodactylus scalmophorus n. sp., Protogyrodactylus ichthyocercus n. sp., and Protogyrodactylus similis n. sp. were recorded from G. oyena. The new species are described, and the finding of M. filamentosum and P. gerres from Moreton Bay represent new geographic records. Haliotrema digyroides Zhang, 2001 and Haliotrema subancistroides Zhang, 2001 are transferred to Metahaliotrema Yamaguti, 1953 as Metahaliotrema digyroides (Zhang, 2001) n. comb. and Metahaliotrema subancistroides (Zhang, 2001) n. comb., respectively.

Based on light and scanning electron microscopical studies, a new nematode parasite, Pseudodelphis eleginopsis n. sp. (Dracunculoidea: Guyanemidae), is described from tissues behind the gills of the Patagonian blennie Eleginops maclovinus (Cuvier) (Perciformes: Eleginopsidae) off the Atlantic coast (San Matías and San José Gulfs) of Patagonia, Argentina. The new species is mainly characterised by the length of the body (males 10-13 mm, larvigerous females 31-59 mm), the number (14) and arrangement of cephalic papillae, the absence of a buccal capsule, the muscular to glandular oesophagus length ratio (1:3-4) of larvigerous females, the length of the spicules (48-63 µm) and the number (7 pairs) and arrangement of the caudal papillae in the male. Pseudodelphis eleginopsis n. sp. is the first species of this genus described from a marine fish in the Atlantic Ocean and the first known dracunculoid parasitising the fish host belonging to the family Eleginopsidae. As revealed by the examination of very young females of the new species, the female genital tract of Pseudodelphis spp. is monodelphic. The genus Syngnathinema Moravec, Spangenberg & Frasca, 2001 is considered a junior synonym of Pseudodelphis Adamson & Roth, 1990 and, consequently, S. californiense and S. chitwoodi are transferred to Pseudodelphis as P. californiensis (Moravec, Spangenberg & Frasca, 2001) n. comb. and P. chitwoodi (Moravec & Kuchta, 2013) n. comb., respectively. Two dracunculoid species, Pseudodelphis limnicola Brugni & Viozzi, 2006 and the previously established Philonema percichthydis Moravec, Urawa & Coria, 1997, both described from the same freshwater host species, Percichthys trucha (Valenciennes), in the same region (Patagonia), are considered to be identical; therefore, the valid name of this species is Pseudodelphis percichthydis n. comb. and P. limnicola becomes its junior synonym. A key to the species of Pseudodelphis is provided.

The Australian farmed yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi, YTK) industry monitor skin fluke (Benedenia seriolae) and gill fluke (Zeuxapta seriolae) burden by pooling the fluke count of 10 hooked YTK. The random and systematic error of this sampling strategy was evaluated to assess potential impact on treatment decisions. Fluke abundance (fluke count per fish) in a study cage (estimated 30,502 fish) was assessed five times using the current sampling protocol and its repeatability was estimated the repeatability coefficient (CR) and the coefficient of variation (CV). Individual body weight, fork length, fluke abundance, prevalence, intensity (fluke count per infested fish) and density (fluke count per Kg of fish) were compared between 100 hooked and 100 seined YTK (assumed representative of the entire population) to estimate potential selection bias. Depending on the fluke species and age category, CR (expected difference in parasite count between 2 sampling iterations) ranged from 0.78 to 114 flukes per fish. Capturing YTK by hooking increased the selection of fish of a weight and length in the lowest 5th percentile of the cage (RR = 5.75, 95% CI: 2.06-16.03, P-value = 0.0001). These lower end YTK had on average an extra 31 juveniles and 6 adults Z. seriolae per Kg of fish and an extra 3 juvenile and 0.4 adult B. seriolae per Kg of fish, compared to the rest of the cage population (P-value < 0.05). Hooking YTK on the edge of the study cage biases sampling towards the smallest and most heavily infested fish in the population, resulting in poor repeatability (more variability amongst sampled fish) and an overestimation of parasite burden in the population. In this particular commercial situation these finding supported that health management program, where the finding of an underestimation of parasite burden could provide a production impact on the study population. In instances where fish populations and parasite burdens are more homogenous, sampling error may be less severe. Sampling error when capturing fish from sea cage is difficult to predict. The amplitude and direction of this error should be investigated for a given cultured fish species across a range of parasite burden and fish profile scenarios., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, is a tropical species of economic importance for fisheries around the world. It occurs seasonally in subtropical waters around Madeira archipelago, in the warmer months. In this study, a parasitological analysis was carried out on a sample of 30 skipjack caught near Madeira Island. A total of 24 parasite taxa were found in this sample. The skipjack parasite community detected was characterized by a wide diversity of parasites, with a predominance of adult didymozoid trematodes, and high prevalences of Tentacularia coryphaenae cestode larvae and Anisakis sp. larvae. Microhabitat distribution of gill parasites was assessed for the most prevalent species, and correlations between parasite abundance and various host features such as size, condition, and fat content were investigated. Parasite taxa which might be useful as biological tags in future studies of skipjack migrations in the Eastern Atlantic were selected.

Cynoscionicola veranoi n. sp. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae) is described based on specimens collected from the gills of lorna drum Sciaena deliciosa (Tschudi, 1846) (Sciaenidae) from Peru. The new species can be differentiated from the other congeneric species by the combination of the following characteristics: (1) haptor with two types of clamps, (2) number and shape of the spines in anterolateral pouches of genital atrium (10-11 curved spines and 3-4 short and bifid spines with a knob in each lateral margin), (3) number and shape of the spines in posterolateral pouches of genital atrium (13-18 bifid spines), (4) 4-6 small spherical unarmed pouches in the genital atrium, and (5) 10-15 testes. In addition, a redescription of Cynoscionicola americanus Tantaleán, Martínez and Escalante, 1987 and Hargicotyle sciaenae Oliva and Luque, 1989 (Diclidophoridae) based on examination of type material and newly collected specimens from snakehead kingcroaker Menticirrhus ophicephalus (Jenyns, 1840) and S. deliciosa (type hosts), respectively, are provided herein.

Tetrancistrum labyrinthus n. sp. is described from the gills of the marine herbivorous fish Siganus canaliculatus (Park) found in the Western Indian Ocean (Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea). Comparative morphological analyses of all previously described species of Tetrancistrum Goto & Kikuchi, 1917 confirmed the distinct status of T. labyrinthus n. sp. The new species closely resembles T. suezicum Paperna, 1972 and T. oraminii Young, 1967 in the morphology of the male copulatory organ. However, it can be distinguished by possessing a thin handle-like anterior basal flange and a compound accessory piece that is composed of a tapering rod-shaped anterior part and a large cylindrical, elongated posterior part. The new species can be further distinguished from other Tetrancistrum species by its highly sclerotised and complex disc-shaped vaginal vestibule. This is the first record of Tetrancistrum from the Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea, and the fourth of nominal species of Tetrancistrum known to parasitise Siganus canaliculatus (Park). In addition, T. indicum Paperna, 1972 is re-described here with an updated locality record.

A description is given of Gobioecetes biwaensis n. g., n. sp. (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) on the gills of a freshwater gobiid fish, Rhinogobius sp. BW Takahashi & Okazaki, 2002 from Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture and Rhinogobius sp. from Sento Imperial Palace, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. This monogenean is most similar to Parancyrocephaloides rhinogobius Ling, 1973, proposed here as Gobioecetes rhinogobius n. comb., collected from the gills of Rhinogobius giurinus (Rutter, 1897) in Hupei Province, China, but can be differentiated from it in that ventral hamuli of G. biwaensis are larger than those of G. rhinogobius and in that in G. biwaensis, ventral hamuli are larger than dorsal ones, but in G. rhinogobius, ventral and dorsal hamuli are almost equal in size. The new genus is characterized by the absence of a bar supporting dorsal hamuli. Parancyrocephaloides daicoci Yamaguti, 1938, the type species of the genus, is redescribed based on newly collected specimens from a marine dactylopterid, Dactyloptena peterseni (Nyström, 1887) and the type specimens, revealing that it has a pair of vestigial bars supporting dorsal hamuli. A parasitological survey of freshwater fishes in the Big Thicket National Preserve in southeast Texas revealed myxozoan infections in two species of sunfish, Lepomis marginatus Holbrook and Lepomis miniatus Jordan (Perciformes: Centrarchidae). Pseudocysts were elongate-oval, 988 × 485 µm (ex L. marginatus) and 800 × 606 µm (ex L. miniatus) and demonstrated a predilection to the edge of the primary gill lamellae. Myxospores consistent with the genus Myxobolus were oblong, 16.8-21.3 (19.0 ± 0.9) µm long, 7.0-8.8 (7.9 ± 0.5) µm wide and 5.3-6.1 (5.8 ± 0.3) µm thick (ex L. marginatus) and 17.2-20.3 (18.8 ± 0.7) µm long, 7.5-9.9 (8.7 ± 0.6) µm wide, and 6.8-7.2 (7.0 ± 0.2) µm thick (ex L. miniatus); with 2 pyriform polar capsules 8.3-9.8 (9.0 ± 0.5) µm long, 2.2-2.7 (2.5 ± 0.2) µm wide (ex L. marginatus) and 9.2-10.5 (10.0 ± 0.4) µm long, 2.2-3.0 (2.8 ± 0.2) µm wide (ex L. miniatus). Statistically, the measurements of spore body width, polar capsule length, and polar capsule width were significantly different between myxospores from L. marginatus and L. miniatus. However, intraspecific genetic variability between isolates at the 18S rRNA gene was negligible, with < 0.8% variability across > 2,000 bp of sequence. The isolates shared no significant sequence similarity with any myxozoan deposited in the GenBank nucleotide database. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from the 18S rRNA gene from both L. marginatus and L. miniatus placed the isolates within a clade of myxozoan parasites of perciform fishes. Based on shared tissue and host family tropism, overlapping morphological characters and high degrees of sequence conservation at the 18S rRNA gene, we propose these isolates as morphologically distinct, genetically conspecific representatives of M. lepomis n. sp. from the gills of L. marginatus and L. miniatus in the Big Thicket National Preserve in Texas, USA.

We collected specimens of Microcotyle spp. from two species of scorpaeniform fishes off Algeria, namely Scorpaena notata and Helicolenus dactylopterus. The identification of both fishes was confirmed by molecular barcoding of the COI gene. Sequences of COI gene were also obtained for both parasite species. The species from S. notata is described as Microcotyle algeriensis n. sp., on the basis of morphological differences from other species (number of clamps, number of spines in genital atrium, number of testes). Its COI sequence differs from M. sebastis Goto, 1894 (from Sebastes schlegeli from a fish farm in South Korea) by 14.6%. The species from H. dactylopterus is distinct from M. algeriensis on the basis of morphology (number of clamps, number of spines in genital atrium) and COI sequence (4.5% divergence) and is also distinct from M. sebastis in its COI sequence (12.3%). We refrained from describing it as new because M. sebastis, a species originally described from scorpaeniform fishes off Japan, has been recorded in various hosts in the North and South Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean (for the latter, in the same host, H. dactylopterus). We believe that correct specific assignment of species of Microcotyle from scorpaeniform fishes needs a detailed morphological and molecular study of representatives from various locations and hosts., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
