Background: Recruitment for neonatal clinical trials can be particularly challenging. Low enrollment rates bias the research population and decrease generalizability of findings. We identified a critical need for an intervention to improve how researchers recruit for neonatal clinical trials. Working within the US neonatal research context, we developed the Better Research Interactions for Every Family (BRIEF) Intervention, which had two overarching goals: to improve the recruitment experience for all parents, focusing on minoritized populations, and to increase participation, focusing on decreasing disparities in research participation., Methods: We used intervention mapping (IM) to guide all steps of intervention development. IM is a planning framework that provides a systematic process and detailed protocol for step-by-step decision-making for intervention development, implementation, and evaluation., Results: We performed IM's six steps. In step 1, we convened two stakeholder groups, a parent panel and an expert panel, who provided guidance through development of all BRIEF components. Through a recent systematic review, empirical data collected by our team, and consultations with the panels, we identified key determinants (barriers and facilitators) of low enrollment rates and research team members as change agents. In step 2, we iteratively refined our list of key factors to include and linked determinants of behavior changes to these performance objectives. In step 3, we chose three theories (social cognitive theory, theory of information processing, and the trans-theoretical model), methods from identified practical applications suitable for the population (research team members) and the context (busy research NICU teams). In step 4, we developed and refined the intervention components, including self-guided pre-work and a single in-person session. In step 5, we identified the Darbepoetin plus slow-release intravenous iron trial as our partner study in which to pilot BRIEF. In step 6, we developed a multi-stage evaluation plan that included five distinct levels of outcomes., Conclusions: This manuscript shares our rationale and processes for the creation of a research team member-facing intervention aiming to improve recruitment processes for neonatal clinical trials. Background: Ensuring diversity in clinical trials can be a challenge, which may be exacerbated when recruiting vulnerable populations, such as participants with mental health illness. As recruitment continues to be the major cause of trial delays, researchers are turning to online recruitment strategies, e.g. social media, to reach a wider population and reduce recruitment time and costs. There is mixed evidence for the use of online recruitment strategies; therefore, the REcruitment in Mental health trials: broadening the 'net', opportunities for INclusivity through online methoDs (RE-MIND) study aimed to identify evidence and provide guidance for use of online strategies in recruitment to mental health trials, with a focus on whether online strategies can enhance inclusivity. This commentary, as part of the RE-MIND study, focusses on providing recommendations for recruitment strategy selection in future research with the aim to improve trial efficiency. A mixed-methods approach was employed involving three work packages: (I) an evidence review of a cohort of 97 recently published randomised controlled trials/feasibility or pilot studies in mental health to assess the impact of online versus offline recruitment; (II) a qualitative study investigating the experiences of n = 23 key stakeholders on use of an online recruitment approach in mental health clinical trials; (III) combining the results of WP1 and WP2 to produce recommendations on the use of an online recruitment strategy in mental health clinical trials. The findings from WP1 and 2 have been published elsewhere; this commentary represents the results of the third work package., Conclusion: For external validity, clinical trial participants should reflect the populations that will ultimately receive the interventions being tested, if proven effective. Background: Sepsis is a heterogeneous syndrome, and enrollment of more homogeneous patients is essential to improve the efficiency of clinical trials. Artificial intelligence (AI) has facilitated the identification of homogeneous subgroups, but how to estimate the uncertainty of the model outputs when applying AI to clinical decision-making remains unknown., Objective: We aimed to design an AI-based model for purposeful patient enrollment, ensuring that a patient with sepsis recruited into a trial would still be persistently ill by the time the proposed therapy could impact patient outcome. We also expected that the model could provide interpretable factors and estimate the uncertainty of the model outputs at a customized confidence level., Methods: In this retrospective study, 9135 patients with sepsis requiring vasopressor treatment within 24 hours after sepsis onset were enrolled from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This cohort was used for model development, and 10-fold cross-validation with 50 repeats was used for internal validation. In total, 3743 patients with sepsis from the eICU Collaborative Research Database were used as the external validation cohort. All included patients with sepsis were stratified based on disease progression trajectories: rapid death, recovery, and persistent ill. A total of 148 variables were selected for predicting the 3 trajectories. Four machine learning algorithms with 3 different setups were used. We estimated the uncertainty of the model outputs using conformal prediction (CP). The Shapley Additive Explanations method was used to explain the model., Results: The multiclass gradient boosting machine was identified as the best-performing model with good discrimination and calibration performance in both validation cohorts. The mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve with SD was 0.906 (0.018) for rapid death, 0.843 (0.008) for recovery, and 0.807 (0.010) for persistent ill in the internal validation cohort. In the external validation cohort, the mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (SD) was 0.878 (0.003) for rapid death, 0.764 (0.008) for recovery, and 0.696 (0.007) for persistent ill. The maximum norepinephrine equivalence, total urine output, Acute Physiology Score III, mean systolic blood pressure, and the coefficient of variation of oxygen saturation contributed the most. Compared to the model without CP, using the model with CP at a mixed confidence approach reduced overall prediction errors by 27.6% (n=62) and 30.7% (n=412) in the internal and external validation cohorts, respectively, as well as enabled the identification of more potentially persistent ill patients., Conclusions: The implementation of our model has the potential to reduce heterogeneity and enroll more homogeneous patients in sepsis clinical trials. Background: Research is needed to understand and address barriers to risk management for women at high (≥20% lifetime) risk for breast cancer, but recruiting this population for research studies is challenging., Objective: This paper compares a variety of recruitment strategies used for a cross-sectional, observational study of high-risk women., Methods: Eligible participants were assigned female at birth, aged 25-85 years, English-speaking, living in the United States, and at high risk for breast cancer as defined by the American College of Radiology. Individuals were excluded if they had a personal history of breast cancer, prior bilateral mastectomy, medical contraindications for magnetic resonance imaging, or were not up-to-date on screening mammography per American College of Radiology guidelines. Participants were recruited from August 2020 to January 2021 using the following mechanisms: targeted Facebook advertisements, Twitter posts, ResearchMatch (a web-based research recruitment database), community partner promotions, paper flyers, and community outreach events. Interested individuals were directed to a secure website with eligibility screening questions. Participants self-reported method of recruitment during the eligibility screening. For each recruitment strategy, we calculated the rate of eligible respondents and completed surveys, costs per eligible participant, and participant demographics., Results: We received 1566 unique responses to the eligibility screener. Participants most often reported recruitment via Facebook advertisements (724/1566, 46%) and ResearchMatch (646/1566, 41%). Community partner promotions resulted in the highest proportion of eligible respondents (24/46, 52%), while ResearchMatch had the lowest proportion of eligible respondents (73/646, 11%). Word of mouth was the most cost-effective recruitment strategy (US $4.66 per completed survey response) and paper flyers were the least cost-effective (US $1448.13 per completed survey response). The demographic characteristics of eligible respondents varied by recruitment strategy: Twitter posts and community outreach events resulted in the highest proportion of Hispanic or Latina women (1/4, 25% and 2/6, 33%, respectively), and community partner promotions resulted in the highest proportion of non-Hispanic Black women (4/24, 17%)., Conclusions: Although recruitment strategies varied in their yield of study participants, results overall support the feasibility of identifying and recruiting women at high risk for breast cancer outside of clinical settings. Under-representation of subgroups of the population in clinical trials has been and continues to be a problem despite goals of academia, industry, and government. Older adults are among the groups that are under-represented in trials of medications that they are likely to receive once marketing approval has been received. Recent legislation that mandates that clinical trial participants be representative of patient population has been passed and creates hope that greater numbers of older adults will be enrolled in clinical trials and that they will be representative of "typical" geriatric patients. However, there is the need for collection of current data on disease prevalences with granularity as to age, gender, and race as well as geriatric co-morbidities to assess the representativeness of clinical trial participants relative to patient populations. Consensus on definitions and collection of data relevant to geriatric patient populations are needed to evaluate effects of comorbidities, frailty, cognitive and physical function. There will also be a need for expansion of the geriatric research workforce, facilities for research both in academic centers but also in the community and long-term care facilities, and for engagement with and involvement of communities that have been traditionally under-represented to conduct clinical trials that enroll truly representative patient populations., (© 2024 The Authors. Purpose: To describe successful strategies for the recruitment of diverse community-dwelling older adults for a technology-based fall risk assessment research study during the global coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic., Method: In this cross-sectional study, 124 adults aged ≥60 years agreed to participate. We used several recruitment strategies, including social media platforms, local community centers, flyers, contacting key persons, word of mouth, and contacting participants from previous research projects., Results: Targeted and personalized strategies for recruitment, including contacting a key community leader (52.4%, n = 65) and communication with friends and family members (46.7%, n = 58), were the most successful. One (0.8%) participant was recruited from a prior research project. In contrast, individuals were not recruited from posted flyers and social media., Conclusion: Recruitment can be improved with word of mouth and contacting key persons, such as community leaders, which can be achieved by building a trusted relationship between researchers and community leaders. Objective: On October 11, 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expanded the indications for carotid artery stenting (CAS) to include patients with ≥50% symptomatic or ≥70% asymptomatic carotid stenosis. The aim of this article was to investigate the implications of this decision., Methods: The reasons behind the increased coverage for CAS are analyzed and discussed, as well as the various Societies supporting or opposing the expansion of indications for CAS., Results: The benefits associated with expanding CAS indications include providing an additional therapeutic option to patients and enabling individualization of treatment according to patient-specific characteristics. The drawbacks of expanding CAS indications include a possible bias in decision-making and an increase in inappropriate CAS procedures., Conclusions: The purpose of the CMS recommendation to expand indications for CAS is to improve the available therapeutic options for patients. Objective: The ability to apply results from a study to a broader population remains a primary objective in translational science. Distinct from intrinsic elements of scientific rigor, the extrinsic concept of generalization requires there be alignment between a study cohort and population in which results are expected to be applied. Widespread efforts have been made to quantify representativeness of study cohorts. These techniques, however, often consider the study and target cohorts as monolithic collections that can be directly compared. Overlooking known impacts to health from socio-demographic and environmental factors tied to individual's geographical location, and potentially obfuscating misalignment in underrepresented population subgroups. This manuscript introduces several measures to account for geographic information in the assessment of cohort representation., Methods: Metrics were defined across two themes: First, measures of recruitment, to assess if a study cohort is drawn at an expected rate and in an expected geographical pattern with respect to individuals in a reference cohort. Second, measures of individual characteristics, to assess if the individuals in the study cohort accurately reflect the sociodemographic, clinical, and geographic diversity observed across a reference cohort while accounting for the geospatial proximity of individuals., Results: As an empirical demonstration, methods are applied to an active clinical study examining asthma in Black/African American patients at a US Midwestern pediatric hospital. Results illustrate how areas of over- and under-recruitment can be identified and contextualized in light of study recruitment patterns at an individual-level, highlighting the ability to identify a subset of features for which the study cohort closely resembled the broader population. In addition they provide an opportunity to dive deeper into misalignments, to identify study cohort members that are in some way distinct from the communities for which they are expected to represent., Conclusion: Together, these metrics provide a comprehensive spatial assessment of a study cohort with respect to a broader target population. Purpose: Subacromial balloon spacer implantation (SBSI) efficacy for massive rotator cuff tear treatment was evaluated based on perceived shoulder function, active shoulder mobility, pain, complications and research study methodological quality. The purpose was to better discern the efficacy of this device from both surgical and rehabilitative perspectives to improve patient outcomes., Methods: PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were searched (1 January 2010 to 1 June 2024) using 'balloon spacer', 'subacromial spacer', 'subacromial balloon spacer', 'shoulder spacer' and 'inspace' terms. Pre-surgery (baseline), 12-month (12-m) and 24-month (24-m) post-SBSI mean changes were compared using one-way ANOVA and Scheffe post hoc tests, and comparative study effect sizes were calculated (p ≤ 0.05)., Results: This review consists of 27 studies with 894 patients (67.8 ± 5 years of age) and 29.4 ± 17-month follow-up. Modified Coleman Methodology Scores (MCMS) revealed fair overall quality (mean = 61.4 ± 11). Constant-Murley scores improved from 34.8 ± 6 (baseline), to 64.2 ± 9 (12-m) and 67.9 ± 8 (24-m) (12-m, 24-m > baseline, p < 0.001). ASES scores improved from 35.1 ± 14 (baseline), to 83.3 ± 7 (12-m) and 81.8 ± 5 (24-m)(12-m, 24-m > baseline, p < 0.001). VAS pain scores improved from 6.6 ± 1 (baseline), to 2.6 ± 1 (12-m) and 2.0 ± 1 (24-m) (12-m, 24-m < baseline, p < 0.001). Flexion increased from 108.5 ± 25° (baseline), to 128.5 ± 30° (12-m) and 151.2 ± 14° (24-m) (24-m > 12-m, baseline, p = 0.01). Abduction increased from 97.7 ± 24° (baseline) to 116.3 ± 23° (12-m) and 142.3 ± 15° (24-m) (24-m > 12-m, baseline, p = 0.02). External rotation (ER) in adduction changed from 33.1 ± 7° (baseline) to 32.5 ± 4° (12-m) and 53.9 ± 9° (24-m)(24-m > 12-m, baseline, p = 0.01). ER at 90° abduction increased from 56.3 ± 3° (baseline) to 83.5 ± 5° (12-m) and 77.1 ± 4° (24-m) (24-m, 12-m > baseline, p = 0.01). Comparison studies, however, displayed insignificant results with small effect sizes., Conclusion: Despite overall fair MCMS scores, at 24-m post-SBSI, shoulder function improved and pain decreased. More rigorous comparative studies, however, revealed insignificant findings. Background: Facebook is a prominent social medial platform frequently used for business marketing. Researchers are starting to recognize the utility of this platform for developing research awareness, information dissemination, and more recently participant recruitment., Purpose: This paper will provide an overview of methods used in Facebook recruitment through an exemplar study. It will highlight successes and challenges and provide insight into future opportunities for its' use., Methods: Two methods of Facebook recruitment are outlined in this paper: the use of Facebook groups and paid advertising. A step-by-step guide highlights how researchers can implement these specific methods of Facebook recruitment., Results: Facebook was successfully utilized to recruit participants in the exemplar study. Recruitment was completed over a period of 82 days with a total cost of $157.09 Canadian dollars., Conclusion: Facebook is a viable method of recruiting research participants. This method can be cost-effective, timely, and efficient in comparison to traditional research recruitment methods. The evolution of laparoscopic liver surgery, originating in the 1990s, has been marked by significant advancements and milestones, overcoming initial technical hurdles and gaining widespread acceptance within the surgical community as a precise and safe alternative to open procedures. Along this journey, numerous challenges emerged, leading to the accumulation of evidence and the development of guidelines aimed at assisting surgeons in determining the safety, suitability, and complexity of laparoscopic liver resection. This chapter provides a thorough examination of key aspects of laparoscopic liver resection, including difficulty scoring systems, criteria for patient selection, technical considerations, outcomes across different types of liver lesions, and the innovative solutions developed to address challenges, thus offering a comprehensive overview of laparoscopic liver resection, and highlighting its evolving significance in modern hepatobiliary surgery., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. Background: The monarchE and NATALEE trials demonstrated the benefit of CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i) therapy in adjuvant breast cancer (BC) treatment. Patient selection, based on clinical characteristics, delineated those at high (monarchE) and high/intermediate recurrence risk (NATALEE). This study employed a historical patient cohort to describe the proportion and prognosis of patients eligible for adjuvant CDK4/6i trials., Methods: Between 2009 and 2011, 3529 patients were enrolled in the adjuvant PreFace clinical trial (NCT01908556). Eligibility criteria included postmenopausal patients with hormone receptor-positive (HRpos) BC for whom a five-year upfront therapy with letrozole was indicated. Patients were categorized into prognostic groups according to monarchE and NATALEE inclusion criteria, and their invasive disease-free survival (iDFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed., Results: Among 2891 HRpos patients, 384 (13.3 %) met the primary monarchE inclusion criteria. The majority (n = 261) qualified due to having ≥ 4 positive lymph nodes. For NATALEE, 915 out of 2886 patients (31.7 %) met the eligibility criteria, with 126 patients (13.7 %) being node-negative. Patients from monarchE with ≥ 4 positive lymph nodes and NATALEE with stage III BC exhibited the poorest prognosis (3-year iDFS rate 0.87). Patients ineligible for the trials demonstrated prognoses similar to the most favorable patient groups within the eligibility criteria., Conclusion: Patient populations eligible for monarchE and NATALEE trials differed. Nearly a third of the postmenopausal HRpos population, previously under upfront letrozole treatment, met the NATALEE prognostic eligibility criteria. Purpose of Review: To discuss available premium intraocular lenses (IOLs), patient selection, and important considerations for each premium IOL., Recent Findings: We review important topics and considerations for premium IOL selection: specifically, toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF), multifocal/trifocal, light adjustable lenses (LALs), and small aperture IOLs. Toric lenses are an excellent option for patients with astigmatism. However, to achieve optimal patient satisfaction, it is critical to account for the ATR astigmatism contribution from the posterior cornea and high angle alphas. Additionally, examining the ocular surface prior to placement of EDOF/multifocal IOLs is important, yet the significance of HOAs on outcomes after implantation still must be elucidated more. Purpose of Review: To describe methods to improve representation of women in cardiac surgery clinical trials., Recent Findings: Cardiovascular disease risk among women is high. Historically, women have been excluded from cardiac surgery trials, in part due to restrictive inclusion criteria. Surgical outcomes, specifically after coronary artery bypass grafting, are consistently worse among female patients, and these outcomes have not improved over the last decade. Addressing treatment effects and clinical benefit among women requires accurate representation in cardiovascular surgery trials. ROMA:Women, is the first cardiac surgery trial to focus solely on women, with the goal of addressing underrepresentation. Through utilizing specific strategies, ROMA:Women is a promising first step in advancing health equity., Summary: Strategies to ensure effective recruitment and representation among women in cardiac surgery clinical trials, such as tailored eligibility criteria and comprehensive strategies to improve communication and increase trust, are two of many potential approaches to address the structural barriers to female representation in cardiac surgery clinical trials. The number of health technology-based intervention studies has grown significantly. However, issues in the recruitment and retention for such studies, especially of Asian Americans, have rarely been discussed. The purpose of this paper was to discuss issues in the recruitment and retention of a specific group of Asian Americans-Korean American midlife women with depressive symptoms-into a technology-based intervention study using computers and mobile devices with a measurement device and to provide directions for future participant recruitment and retention in technology-based intervention studies. The written memos of research team members and the written records of research team meetings were analyzed using a content analysis. The issues in the recruitment and retention process included (1) low recruitment and retention rates; (2) the perceived long intervention period; (3) strict inclusion/exclusion criteria; (4) concerns related to the use of a measurement device; and (5) the perceived adequacy of monetary incentives. Objectives: Research samples that are representative of patient populations are needed to ensure the generalizability of study findings. The primary aim was to assess the efficacy of a study design and recruitment strategy in obtaining a participant sample that was representative of the broader cochlear implant (CI) patient population at the CI center. A secondary aim was to review whether the CI recipient population was representative of the state population., Methods: Demographic variables were compared for a research participant sample (n = 79) and the CI patient population (n = 338). The participant sample was recruited from the CI patient population. The study design included visits that were at the same location and frequency as the recommended clinical follow-up intervals. The demographics for the combined group (participant sample and patient population) were then compared to the reported demographics for the population in North Carolina., Results: There were no significant differences between the participant sample and patient population for biological sex, age at implantation, racial distribution, socioeconomic position, degree of urbanization, or drive time to the CI center (p ≥ 0.086). The combined CI recipient population was significantly different from the North Carolina population for the distributions of race, ethnicity, and degree of urbanization (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The study design and recruitment strategy allowed for recruitment of a participant sample that was representative of the CI patient population. Lack of available organs poses a significant challenge in meeting the needs of patients with life-threatening liver disease who could benefit from liver transplantation (LT). Psychosocial vulnerability markers have been linked to post-transplant outcomes, raising questions about their use in patient selection. However, their incorporation into selection criteria raises concerns about health equity and potential discrimination. As a result, there is a pressing need to refine fair allocation systems that consider both clinical and psychosocial factors to ensure equitable access and optimize post-transplant outcomes. The Equitable Benefit Approach (EBA) proposed in this paper by the multidisciplinary group of clinical experts in LT from the Italian Society for the Study of the Liver seeks to address these concerns. It presents four procedural principles, the two allocative principles usually applied in transplantation (urgency and utility) and introduces a new one, the principle of health equity. The EBA aims to prioritize patients with the highest transplant benefit while addressing health inequalities. It emphasizes evidence-based decision-making and standardized assessment tools to reliably evaluate psychosocial risk factors. Implementing the EBA involves a multi-step process, including stakeholder engagement, prospective studies to validate its efficacy, development of institutional policies and algorithms, and ongoing monitoring and revision. By following these steps, health care providers can ensure that LT allocation decisions are transparent and responsive to evolving clinical and social contexts. Background: Use of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is increasing, but candidacy selection processes are variable and subject to bias., Research Question: What are the reasons behind venovenous ECMO candidacy decisions, and are decisions made consistently across patients?, Study Design and Methods: Prospective observational study of all patients, admitted or outside hospital referrals, considered for venovenous ECMO at a tertiary referral center. Relevant clinical data and reasons for candidacy determination were cross-referenced with other noncandidates and candidates and were assessed qualitatively., Results: Eighty-one consultations resulted in 44 noncandidates (54%), 29 candidates (36%; nine of whom subsequently underwent cannulation), and eight deferred decisions (10%). Fifteen unique contraindications were identified, variably present across all patients. Five contraindications were invoked as the sole reason to deny ECMO to a patient. In patients with three or more contraindications, additional contraindications were cited even if the severity was relatively minor. All but four contraindications invoked to deny ECMO to a patient were nonprohibitive for at least one other candidate. Contraindications documented in noncandidates were present but not mentioned in 21 other noncandidates (47%). Twenty-six candidates (90%) had at least one contraindication that was prohibitive in a noncandidate, including a contraindication that was the sole reason to deny ECMO. Contraindications were proposed as informing three prognostic domains, through which patterns of inconsistency could be understood better: (1) irreversible underlying pulmonary process, (2) unsurvivable critical illness, and (3) clinical condition too compromised for meaningful recovery., Interpretation: ECMO candidacy decisions are inconsistent. Aims: There is a need to increase representation of diverse older adults in health-related qualitative research to better understand and improve chronic disease care over the lifespan. Our aim was to elicit perspectives about research recruitment among a diverse sample of older adults with diabetes participating in a qualitative study., Methods: Older adults with diabetes and caregivers were recruited through purposive sampling for semi-structured interviews focused on diabetes self care. Six questions were used to explore recruitment strategies and recommendations for engaging older adults in research. We analysed interview transcripts using descriptive analysis to identify themes related to engaging older adults in research studies., Results: Seventeen older adults with diabetes and three caregivers participated (N = 20). Descriptive analysis revealed four themes: (1) Recruitment of older adults requires varied strategies to overcome barriers to engagement and participation; (2) Building and leveraging personal relationships is central to successful recruitment; (3) Transparent communication about the research process and value of the study is needed to inform and motivate older adults to participate; and (4) Research offers a connection to a broader community: sharing, learning and helping others., Conclusions: We found four main themes related to the complexity of recruiting older adults for research studies. Despite a growing body of literature in the area of recruitment modeling for multicenter studies, in practice, statistical models to predict enrollments are rarely used and when they are, they often rely on unrealistic assumptions. The time-dependent Poisson-Gamma model (tPG) is a recently developed flexible methodology which allows analysts to predict recruitments in an ongoing multicenter trial, and its performance has been validated on data from a cohort study. In this article, we illustrate and further validate the tPG model on recruitment data from randomized controlled trials. Additionally, in the appendix, we provide a practical and easy to follow guide to its implementation via the tPG R package. Background: Members of vulnerable populations are underrepresented in Parkinson's disease (PD) research. A complex web of research barriers perpetuates this gap. Community-based research methods are one approach to addressing this issue. The present PD study was designed to examine the effectiveness of community-based interventions to overcome barriers and increase research participation among underrepresented groups (URGs)., Methods: Eight study sites across the US were selected and paired based on proposed interventions with specific URGs. Surveys assessed knowledge and attitudes toward PD research. Finally, researchers examined whether the present study affected recruitment to Fox Insight, an online PD research study also recruiting at each site., Results: In total, 474 participants were recruited. At post-intervention for the FIRE-UP PD Study, recruitment increased significantly in intervention compared to control sites among Black and African American non-Hispanic/Latino populations (p = 0.003), White Hispanic/Latino (p = 0.003) populations, and Not Listed Hispanic/Latino populations (p < 0.001) as well as those with an educational attainment of a high school diploma/General Education Diploma (GED) (p = 0.009), and an income <$20,000 (p = 0.005) or between $20,000-$34,999 (p < 0.001). Study surveys measuring changes in awareness and attitudes toward PD research had mixed results. In Fox Insight, 181 participants were passively recruited with a shift toward more diverse participant demographics., Conclusion: Research participation demographics reflective of the general population are critical to PD investigation and treatment. The FIRE-UP PD Study showed the effectiveness of localized community engagement strategies in increasing URG recruitment to PD research. Introduction: Studies have shown that certain groups of patients are underrepresented in clinical trials including non-Caucasian ethnicity, poor fluency in English, low socioeconomic status, older age, neurodivergence, and large Body Mass Index (BMI). There is a need to ensure adequate representation of these groups so that the results of any trial accurately reflect the population. The aim of this study was to review the pathway of patients recruited into two early phase breast cancer clinical and determine the inclusivity of patients from the aforementioned sub-groups., Methods: The Breast Cancer Research Database was reviewed, and the characteristics of all patients who were screened for eligibility in two early phase clinical trials was examined. The English Indices of Deprivation was used to populate the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) for each patient using their postcode., Results: In total, 392 patients were eligible to participate, between September 2020 to May 2023. Of these, 144 (36.7 %) were recruited to these two trials. In all, 100 % of patients eligible for these trials were approached and screened for participation. Eligible patients had a mean age of 53.5 years. Recruited patients were younger on average than those not recruited (49.1 years vs 56.0 years, p<0.0001). Only one recruited patient required an interpreter, compared with 24 (9.7 %%) of those who were not recruited (p<0.001). There was no difference in the IMD (p=0.38), BMI (p=0.34) and neurodiversity (p=0.10) between patients recruited into clinical trials and those who were not., Conclusion: Older age and poor fluency in the English language remain barriers to participation in early-phase clinical trials despite implementing a clear pathway to trial recruitment. Objective: The objective of this study is to systematically examine the efficacy of both proprietary (GPT-3.5, GPT-4) and open-source large language models (LLMs) (LLAMA 7B, 13B, 70B) in the context of matching patients to clinical trials in healthcare., Materials and Methods: The study employs a multifaceted evaluation framework, incorporating extensive automated and human-centric assessments along with a detailed error analysis for each model, and assesses LLMs' capabilities in analyzing patient eligibility against clinical trial's inclusion and exclusion criteria. To improve the adaptability of open-source LLMs, a specialized synthetic dataset was created using GPT-4, facilitating effective fine-tuning under constrained data conditions., Results: The findings indicate that open-source LLMs, when fine-tuned on this limited and synthetic dataset, achieve performance parity with their proprietary counterparts, such as GPT-3.5., Discussion: This study highlights the recent success of LLMs in the high-stakes domain of healthcare, specifically in patient-trial matching. Effective recruitment strategies are pivotal for informatics-based intervention trials success, particularly for people living with HIV (PLWH), where engagement can be challenging. Although informatics interventions are recognized for improving health outcomes, the effectiveness of their recruitment strategies remains unclear. We investigated the application of a social marketing framework in navigating the nuances of recruitment for informatics-based intervention trials for PLWH by examining participant experiences and perceptions. We used qualitative descriptive methodology to conduct semi-structured interviews with 90 research participants from four informatics-based intervention trials. Directed inductive and deductive content analyses were guided by Howcutt et al.'s social marketing framework on applying the decision-making process to research recruitment. The majority were male (86.7%), living in the Northeast United States (56%), and identified as Black (32%) or White (32%). Most participants (60%) completed the interview remotely. Sixteen subthemes emerged from five themes: motivation, perception, attitude formation, integration, and learning. Findings from our interview data suggest that concepts from Howcutt et al.'s framework informed participants' decisions to participate in an informatics-based intervention trial. We found that the participants' perceptions of trust in the research process were integral to the participants across the four trials. However, the recruitment approach and communication medium preferences varied between older and younger age groups. Social marketing framework can provide insight into improving the research recruitment process. Background: Accurate prediction of subject recruitment, which is critical to the success of a study, remains an ongoing challenge. Previous prediction models often rely on parametric assumptions which are not always met or may be difficult to implement. We aim to develop a novel method that is less sensitive to model assumptions and relatively easy to implement., Methods: We create a weighted resampling-based approach to predict enrollment in year two based on recruitment data from year one of the completed GRIPS and PACE clinical trials. Different weight functions accounted for a range of potential enrollment trajectory patterns. Prediction accuracy was measured by Euclidean distance for enrollment sequence in year two, total enrollment over time, and total weeks to enroll a fixed number of subjects, against the actual year two enrollment data. We compare the performance of the proposed method with an existing Bayesian method., Results: Weighted resampling using GRIPS data resulted in closer prediction evidenced by better coverage of observed enrollment with the prediction intervals and smaller Euclidean distance from actual enrollment in year 2, especially when enrollment gaps were filled prior to the weighted resampling. These scenarios also produced more accurate predictions for total enrollment and number of weeks to enroll 50 participants. These same scenarios outperformed an existing Bayesian method for all 3 accuracy measures. In PACE data, using a reduced year 1 enrollment resulted in closer prediction evidenced by better coverage of observed enrollment with the prediction intervals and smaller Euclidean distance from actual enrollment in year 2, with the weighted resampling scenarios better reflecting the seasonal variation seen in year (1) The reduced enrollment scenarios resulted in closer prediction for total enrollment over 6 and 12 months into year (2) These same scenarios also outperformed an existing Bayesian method for relevant accuracy measures., Conclusion: The results demonstrate the feasibility and flexibility for a resampling-based, non-parametric approach for prediction of clinical trial recruitment with limited early enrollment data. Background: Social media platforms are increasingly used to recruit patients for clinical studies. Yet, patients' attitudes regarding social media recruitment are underexplored., Objective: This mixed methods study aims to assess predictors of the acceptance of social media recruitment among patients with hepatitis B, a patient population that is considered particularly vulnerable in this context., Methods: Using a mixed methods approach, the hypotheses for our survey were developed based on a qualitative interview study with 6 patients with hepatitis B and 30 multidisciplinary experts. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative interview analysis. For the cross-sectional survey, we additionally recruited 195 patients with hepatitis B from 3 clinical centers in Germany. Adult patients capable of judgment with a hepatitis B diagnosis who understood German and visited 1 of the 3 study centers during the data collection period were eligible to participate. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS (version 28; IBM Corp), including descriptive statistics and regression analysis., Results: On the basis of the qualitative interview analysis, we hypothesized that 6 factors were associated with acceptance of social media recruitment: using social media in the context of hepatitis B (hypothesis 1), digital literacy (hypothesis 2), interest in clinical studies (hypothesis 3), trust in nonmedical (hypothesis 4a) and medical (hypothesis 4b) information sources, perceiving the hepatitis B diagnosis as a secret (hypothesis 5a), attitudes toward data privacy in the social media context (hypothesis 5b), and perceived stigma (hypothesis 6). Regression analysis revealed that the higher the social media use for hepatitis B (hypothesis 1), the higher the interest in clinical studies (hypothesis 3), the more trust in nonmedical information sources (hypothesis 4a), and the less secrecy around a hepatitis B diagnosis (hypothesis 5a), the higher the acceptance of social media as a recruitment tool for clinical hepatitis B studies., Conclusions: This mixed methods study provides the first quantitative insights into social media acceptance for clinical study recruitment among patients with hepatitis B. The study was limited to patients with hepatitis B in Germany but sets out to be a reference point for future studies assessing the attitudes toward and acceptance of social media recruitment for clinical studies. The use of video appointments (VAs) increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the evolution of VA utilisation in Finland using data from two surveys conducted in 2021 (40 responses) and 2023 (30 responses). Our primary aim was to identify patient groups best suited for VAs. Respondents were either neurologists or neurologists-in-training. Our findings suggest that patients with epilepsy or headaches are most suitable for VAs. VAs were primarily used for follow-up visits during both survey periods, but their application for first visits decreased from 68.20% in 2021 to 27.80% in 2023. Healthcare professionals' concerns about data protection have diminished over time, but there is still need for enhanced training in the use of remote applications. Future research should focus on validating the cost-effectiveness, data security and timeliness of VAs.

Background: Participant recruitment in rural and hard-to-reach (HTR) populations can present unique challenges. These challenges are further exacerbated by the need for low-cost recruiting, which often leads to use of web-based recruitment methods (eg, email, social media). Despite these challenges, recruitment strategy statistics that support effective enrollment strategies for underserved and HTR populations are underreported. This study highlights how a recruitment strategy that uses email in combination with follow-up, mostly phone calls and email reminders, produced a higher-than-expected enrollment rate that includes a diversity of participants from rural, Appalachian populations in older age brackets and reports recruitment and demographic statistics within a subset of HTR populations., Objective: This study aims to provide evidence that a recruitment strategy that uses a combination of email, telephonic, and follow-up recruitment strategies increases recruitment rates in various HTR populations, specifically in rural, older, and Appalachian populations., Methods: We evaluated the overall enrollment rate of 1 recruitment arm of a larger study that aims to understand the relationship between genetics and substance use disorders. We evaluated the enrolled population's characteristics to determine recruitment success of a combined email and follow-up recruitment strategy, and the enrollment rate of HTR populations. These characteristics included (1) enrollment rate before versus after follow-up; (2) zip code and county of enrollee to determine rural or urban and Appalachian status; (3) age to verify recruitment in all eligible age brackets; and (4) sex distribution among age brackets and rural or urban status., Results: The email and follow-up arm of the study had a 17.4% enrollment rate. Of the enrolled participants, 76.3% (4602/6030) lived in rural counties and 23.7% (1428/6030) lived in urban counties in Pennsylvania. In addition, of patients enrolled, 98.7% (5956/6030) were from Appalachian counties and 1.3% (76/6030) were from non-Appalachian counties. Patients from rural Appalachia made up 76.2% (4603/6030) of the total rural population. Enrolled patients represented all eligible age brackets from ages 20 to 75 years, with the 60-70 years age bracket having the most enrollees. Females made up 72.5% (4371/6030) of the enrolled population and males made up 27.5% (1659/6030) of the population., Conclusions: Results indicate that a web-based recruitment method with participant follow-up, such as a phone call and email follow-up, increases enrollment numbers more than web-based methods alone for rural, Appalachian, and older populations. Adding a humanizing component, such as a live person phone call, may be a key element needed to establish trust and encourage patients from underserved and rural areas to enroll in studies via web-based recruitment methods. We applied natural language processing (NLP) to a corpus extracted from 4 hours of expert panel discussion transcripts to determine the sustainability of a Stage II-III clinical trial of online social support interventions for Hispanic and African American dementia caregivers. Prominent topics included Technology/hard to reach populations, Training younger populations, Building trust, Privacy and security issues, Simplification of screening questions and recruitment procedures, Understanding participants' needs, Planning strategies and logistics, Potential recruitment places, Adjusting intervention size downwards to engage elderly participants, Targeting different generations, Internet-based interventions by age range, and Providing step-by-step instructions and an overview of the entire research process during recruitment. The application of NLP to qualitative data on a dementia caregiving clinical trial provides useful insights for recruitment, retention, and adherence to guidelines for such interventions serving Hispanic and African American dementia caregivers.

Background: The number of surgical trials is increasing but such trials can be complex to deliver and pose specific challenges. A multi-centre, Phase III, RCT comparing Posterior Cervical Foraminotomy versus Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion in the Treatment of Cervical Brachialgia (FORVAD Trial) was unable to recruit to target. A rapid qualitative study was conducted during trial closedown to understand the experiences of healthcare professionals who participated in the FORVAD Trial, with the aim of informing future research in this area., Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 healthcare professionals who had participated in the FORVAD Trial. Interviews explored participants' experiences of the FORVAD trial. A rapid qualitative analysis was conducted, informed by Normalisation Process Theory., Results: Four main themes were generated in the data analysis: (1) individual vs. community equipoise; (2) trial set-up and delivery; (3) identifying and approaching patients; and (4) timing of randomisation. The objectives of the FORVAD trial made sense to participants and they supported the idea that there was clinical or collective equipoise regarding the two FORVAD interventions; however, many surgeons had treatment preferences and lacked individual equipoise. The site which had most recruitment success had adopted a more structured process for identification and recruitment of patients, whereas other sites that adopted more "ad hoc" screening strategies struggled to identify patients. Randomisation on the day of surgery caused both medico-legal and practical concerns at some sites., Conclusions: Organisation and implementation of a surgical trial in neurosurgery is complex and presents many challenges. Sites often reported low recruitment and discussed the logistical issues of conducting a complex surgical RCT. Future trials in neurosurgery may need to offer more flexibility and time during set-up to maximise opportunities for larger recruitment numbers. Rapid qualitative analysis informed by Normalisation Process Theory was able to quickly identify key issues with trial implementation so rapid qualitative analysis may be a useful approach for teams conducting qualitative research in trials., Trial Registration: ISRCTN, ISRCTN reference: 10,133,661. Participant recruitment is one of the most challenging aspects of a clinical trial, directly impacting both the study's duration and the quality of its results. Therefore, reporting successful recruitment strategies is crucial. This study aimed to document the recruitment tactics and experiences of a research team during a university-based randomized clinical trial, conducted as part of a clinical research immersion program. Recruitment took place from October 2021 to October 2022. Before the study commenced, study team members received formal training in clinical trial participant recruitment from the Principal Investigator. The recruitment strategies were integrated into initial study design, which was approved by the Institutional Review Board. A multimodal approach was employed, incorporating both direct and indirect recruitment methods. These strategies successfully met the enrollment target within the twelve-month period. Throughout the process, team members acquired valuable knowledge in recruitment design and implementation, along with transferable interpersonal and networking skills. In-person recruitment was the most efficient and cost-effective strategy, followed by personal referrals. The primary challenge was accommodating participants' availability. Other study teams should consider these recruitment strategies during their study designs. Additionally, the knowledge and skills gained by this study team underscore the value of experiential learning in research education.

Background: The Canadian National Vaccine Safety (CANVAS) network conducted a multi-center, prospective vaccine safety study to collect safety data after dose 1 and 2 of COVID-19 vaccines and follow up safety information 7 months after dose 1., Objective: This study aimed to describe and evaluate the recruitment methods used by CANVAS and the retention of participants by each modality., Methods: CANVAS deployed a multi-pronged recruitment approach to reach a larger sample, without in-person recruitment. Three primary recruitment strategies were used: passive recruitment, technology-assisted electronic invitation through the vaccine booking system (auto-invitation), or auto-registration through the vaccine registries (auto-enrollment)., Results: Between December 2020 and April 2022, approximately 1.3 million vaccinated adults either self-enrolled or were auto-enrolled in CANVAS, representing about 5% of the vaccinated adult Canadian population. Approximately 1 million participants were auto-enrolled, 300,000 were recruited by auto-invitation, and 5,000 via passive recruitment. Overall survey completion rates for dose 1, dose 2 and the 7-month follow-up surveys were 51.7% (681,198 of 1,318,838), 54.3% (369,552 of 681,198), and 66.4% (452,076 of 681,198), respectively. Completion rates were lower among auto-enrolled participants compared to passively recruited or auto-invited participants who self-enrolled. Objective: This umbrella review synthesises evidence on the methods used to recruit and retain ethnically diverse participants and report and analyse variables related to ethnic diversity in randomised controlled trials., Design: Umbrella review., Data Sources: Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Cochrane and Campbell Libraries for review papers published between 1 January 2010 and 13 May 2024., Eligibility Criteria: English language systematic reviews focusing on inclusion and reporting of ethnicity variables. Methodological quality was assessed using the AMSTAR 2 tool., Results: Sixty-two systematic reviews were included. Findings point to limited representation and reporting of ethnic diversity in trials. Recruitment strategies commonly reported by the reviews were community engagement, advertisement, face-to-face recruitment, cultural targeting, clinical referral, community presentation, use of technology, incentives and research partnership with communities. Retention strategies highlighted by the reviews included frequent follow-ups on participants to check how they are doing in the study, provision of incentives, use of tailored approaches and culturally appropriate interventions. Objective: This study explores the opportunities of social media advertisements as a recruitment strategy in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI)., Study Design: This feasibility study was part of a larger clinical trial on the effects of a patient decision aid for SUI treatment. We started a 61-day social media advertisement campaign to recruit women for the trial. The primary outcome of our study was enrolment pace. Secondary outcomes involved cost per participant, baseline demographic comparison and ad campaign performance metrics. Additionally, we interviewed recruited participants to identify the facilitators and barriers of our approach., Results: Ten participants were recruited, of whom 8 completed the full study protocol (2 questionnaires 6 months apart). The enrolment pace, 4.0 study participants per month, was faster compared to the average of 2.7 participants per month through conventional methods. The campaign reached 87 clicks on the advertisement per day and 1 % of these women showed interest in our study by contacting us. The overall conversion rate from click to full participation was 0.2 %. The costs per participant were €112. Besides higher age, the demographics of the social media recruited participants were comparable to the conventional inclusions. Qualitative analysis identified more user-oriented enrolment procedures and potential participant benefit as facilitators of social media recruitment., Conclusion: This study shows that social media recruitment can be feasible in trials for women with SUI. It can accelerate recruitment of eligible participants. Optimising the enrolment procedure to better meet participants' needs and recruitment benefits may improve participation and cost-effectiveness. Liver transplantation (LT) for alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) remains controversial due to concerns about candidate selection subjectivity, post-LT alcohol relapse, and the potential exacerbation of LT disparities. Our aim was to design, perform, and examine the results of a simulated selection of candidates for LT for AH. Medical histories, psychosocial profiles and scores, and outcomes of 4 simulation candidates were presented and discussed at 2 multidisciplinary societal conferences with real-time polling of participant responses. Candidate psychosocial profiles represented a wide spectrum of alcohol relapse risk. The predictive accuracy of four psychosocial scores, Dallas consensus criteria, sustained alcohol use post-LT, Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplant, and QuickTrans, were assessed. Overall, 68 providers, mostly academic transplant hepatologists, participated in the simulation. Using a democratic process of selection, a significant majority from both simulations voted to accept the lowest psychosocial risk candidate for LT (72% and 85%) and decline the highest risk candidate (78% and 90%). For the 2 borderline-risk candidates, a narrower majority voted to decline (56% and 65%; 64% and 82%). Two out of 4 patients had post-LT relapse. Predictive accuracies of Dallas, Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplant, and Quicktrans scores were 50%, while sustained alcohol use post-LT was 25%. The majority of voting outcomes were concordant with post-LT relapse in 3 out of 4 patients. When defining "success" in LT for AH, providers prioritized allograft health and quality of life rather than strict abstinence. In this simulation of LT for AH using a democratic process of selection, we demonstrate its potential as a learning model to evaluate the accuracy of psychosocial scores in predicting post-LT relapse and the concordance of majority voting with post-LT outcomes. This Open Forum is relevant for investigators who conduct research with historically understudied and marginalized populations. The authors introduce a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs clinical trial that experienced challenges with recruitment of African American or Black veterans and was terminated for not achieving its recruitment goals. The role of power dynamics in clinical research is discussed, specifically how unequal distributions of power may create recruitment challenges. The authors summarize three lessons learned and offer recommendations for sharing power equitably between investigators and potential participants. During the period of 2011-2023, the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) granted 139 accelerated and 329 regular approvals for 86 and 152 cancer therapeutic products, respectively. The percentage of approvals for a biomarker-defined population was numerically higher in accelerated approvals in comparison to regular approvals, that is, 48% vs. 40%. From 2011-2016 to 2017-2023, there was an increasing number of approvals with biomarker-defined populations in lung and breast cancers, serving as the primary driver for the overall increase in the percentage of approvals for biomarker-defined populations in solid tumors relative to hematological malignancies. Over the years, approvals were incorporating a more diverse collection of distinct biomarkers, from 3 in 2011 to 16 in 2022. Overall, HER2, hormone receptor (HR), EGFR, ALK, BRAF, and PD-L1-defined populations received the highest numbers of approvals. The FDA decision on approving a biomarker-defined or an all-comers population may depend on a number of factors and may evolve over time based on emerging evidence. The review discusses selected FDA approvals where a pivotal trial enrolled an all-comers population but the approved indication was restricted to a biomarker-defined population, as well as challenges in clinical trial design in the context of precision medicine. The prominent role of biomarkers in optimizing trial design and identifying a population most likely to benefit from treatment underlines the significance of a comprehensive understanding of disease biology and drug mechanisms. Purpose of Review: Given the rapid growth of nonoperating room anesthesia (NORA) in recent years, it is essential to review its unique challenges as well as strategies for patient selection and care optimization., Recent Findings: Recent investigations have uncovered an increasing prevalence of older and higher ASA physical status patients in NORA settings. Although closed claim data regarding patient injury demonstrate a lower proportion of NORA cases resulting in a claim than traditional operating room cases, NORA cases have an increased risk of claim for death. Challenges within NORA include site-specific differences, limitations in ergonomic design, and increased stress among anesthesia providers. Several authors have thus proposed strategies focusing on standardizing processes, site-specific protocols, and ergonomic improvements to mitigate risks., Summary: Considering the unique challenges of NORA settings, meticulous patient selection, risk stratification, and preoperative optimization are crucial. Embracing data-driven strategies and leveraging technological innovations (such as artificial intelligence) is imperative to refine quality control methods in targeted areas. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether Black patients with recurrent endometrial cancer were more likely than White patients to be ineligible for a recently published clinical trial due to specific eligibility criteria., Methods: Patients with recurrent or progressive endometrial cancer diagnosed from January 2010 to December 2021 who received care at a single institution were identified. Demographic and clinicopathologic information was abstracted and determination of clinical trial eligibility was made based on 14 criteria from the KEYNOTE-775 trial. Characteristics of the eligible and ineligible cohorts were compared, and each ineligibility criterion was evaluated by race., Results: One hundred seventy-five patients were identified, 89 who would have met all inclusion and no exclusion criteria for KEYNOTE-775, and 86 who would have been ineligible by one or more exclusion criteria. Patients in the ineligible cohort were more likely to have lower BMI (median 26.5 vs. 29.2, P <0.001), but were otherwise similar with regard to insurance status, histology, and stage at diagnosis. Black patients had 33% lower odds of being eligible (95% CI: 0.33-1.34) and were more likely to meet the exclusion criterion of having a previous intestinal anastomosis, but the result was not statistically significant. If this criterion were removed, the racial distribution of those ineligible for the trial would be more similar (46.4% Black vs. 42.2% White)., Conclusions: Clinical trial eligibility criteria may contribute to the underrepresentation of racial groups in clinical trials, but other factors should be explored. Successful patellofemoral arthroplasty (PFA) requires appropriate patient selection, correct implant positioning and attention to surgical technique. Whilst the original concept and rationale offered an attractive surgical option for patients with isolated patellofemoral arthritis, early results were disappointing and consequently many surgeons became reluctant to offer it. With newer-generation designs, outcomes have been more promising. However, attention to surgical technique remains an integral component to a successful outcome, with results being unforgiving when surgical errors are made. Background: Participants' recruitment and retention into community-based interventions can be challenging, especially in research involving ethnic minorities and migrants. Despite known challenges, there are limited reviews that probe recruitment and retention strategies involving ethnic minorities and migrants in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. This systematic review aimed to measure recruitment and retention rates and identify the barriers and facilitators to effective recruitment and retention of ethnic minorities and migrants in community-based obesity prevention Randomised Control Trials (RCTs) in OECD countries., Methods: This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Five databases (CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, Medline and PsychInfo) were searched from January 2000 to March 2022, in addition to Google and Google Scholar. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed, and pooled analysis and meta-ethnographic analysis were conducted on the included studies., Results: Twenty-five studies were included in the review. The pooled analysis found a 64% rate of recruitment of ethnic minorities in RCTs, with a retention rate of 71%. Key facilitators identified were-use of multiple communication channels, incentives, recruiting community champions, participant convenience and employing culturally sensitive strategies. Key barriers to participation were limited access to study sites, time constraints, limited trust, perceived fear, and anxiety., Conclusion: Findings suggest the importance of undertaking culturally appropriate recruitment and retention strategies to minimise barriers and facilitate effective recruitment and retention of low-income ethnic minorities and migrants in community-based research., (© 2024.
