A device for collecting atmospheric particulates matter for on-line electron microscopy was designed and manufactured by using 3D modeling and printing technology. The device was used to collect atmospheric particulates matter in Xining city of Qinghai province for seven consecutive days and used to collect atmospheric particulates matter in Jinan city of Shandong province for 30 consecutive days. And the samples were analyzed by electron microscopy. Through it can obtain ultra structure and size distribution information of atmospheric particulates matter. The experimental results reflected the distribution of atmospheric particulate matter in real time. The on-line acquisition device for electron microscopy is practical, fast, and convenient, which greatly shortens the sampling period and can be carried to any place outdoors for real-time sampling. The morphological structure and particle size distribution of atmospheric particles in sampling area was observed by electron microscope. The device has reference value to the study of PM2.5 and PM10 in atmosphere and air pollution. This acquisition device is convenient for the detection of sample by electron microscopy. It can further expand and simplify the sampling technology of large-scale instruments and equipment. This new method of real-time monitoring of air pollution is worth popularizing and applying.

Growing concerns related to the adverse health effects of airborne ultrafine particles (UFPs; particles smaller than 300 nm) have highlighted the need for field-portable, cost-efficient, real-time UFP dosimeters to monitor individual exposure. These dosimeters must measure both the particle density and size distribution as these parameters are essential to the determination of where and how many UFPs will be deposited in human lungs. However, though various kinds of laboratory-grade instruments and hand-held monitors have been developed, they are expensive and only capable of measuring particle size distribution. A microfluidic UFP dosimeter is proposed in this study to address these limitations. The proposed sensor, based on an electrical detection method with a machine-learning-aided algorithm, can simultaneously measure the size distribution (number concentration, mean mobility diameter, geometric standard deviation) and particle density, and is compact owing to the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. In a comparison test using physically synthesised Ag and di-ethyl-hexyl sebacate (DEHS) aerosols, the mean measurement errors of the proposed sensor compared to the reference system were 6.1%, 4.5%, and 7.3% for number concentration, mean mobility diameter, and particle density, respectively. Moreover, when the machine-learning aided algorithm was operated, the geometric standard deviation could be deduced with a 7.6% difference. These results indicate that the proposed device can be successfully used as a field-portable UFP sensor to assess individual exposure, an on-site monitor for ambient air pollution, an analysis tool in toxicological studies of inhaled particles, for quality assurance of nanomaterials engineered via aerosol synthesis, etc.

Representative sampling of suspended particulate matter is fundamental for assessing river sediment quality, including the distribution and physicochemical characterisation of particles at different hydrological events. This study compares time-integrated samplers and discrete sampling methods, focusing on (a) the representativeness of the different methods and (b) the comparability between the various sampling techniques. The study investigates whether different sampling devices used under the same conditions can reproduce the annual mean. Two time-integrated sampling techniques (Binnensammler floating collector (BS); self-constructed Phillips sampler (PS)) and two discrete sampling systems (continuous-flow centrifuge (CFC); hydrocyclone (HC)) were compared. The monitoring program (August 2013 to August 2014) was conducted using a 4-week sampling frequency at two different monitoring stations in the Rhine river basin. The analysis of physicochemical parameters included total organic carbon (TOC), particulate phosphorus (PP), grain size distribution (GSD), metals, and organic pollutants (PCBs, HCB, PAH). A nested analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the dependence of suspended matter quality parameters on the sampling method, the sampling device, and the sampling station. According to ANOVA, physical and chemical parameters as well as persistent organic pollutants are homogenous for the time-integrated samplers PS and BS. Comparing PS and the reference technique CFC, only the mean annual concentration of TOC is significantly higher for CFC (5.91%; PS, 4.53%) due to degradation processes. With the exception of TOC, Ni, and GSD, data of BS was comparable with that of CFC. Comparing CFC and HC, there are significant differences for GSD, Zn, and Ni. An analysis of the time series of GSD < 63 μm and sum of PAHs confirms the findings of the nested ANOVA, showing that HC time series display significant differences compared with the other samplers.

The materials and byproducts of the processes used in the metal finishing industry are released as particle contaminants into the air in the workplace. The present study aimed to determine the concentrations and size distributions of these particles and of elements chromium, nickel, copper, manganese, cobalt, and lead (Cr, Ni, Cu, Mn, Co, and Pb, respectively) in a metal finishing industry and evaluate their potential health risks. In this work the urban area of Aracaju city, located in the State of Sergipe, Northeastern Brazil was the site for simultaneous collection of suspended particles (TSP) and inhalable particulate matter (PM10) aiming an evaluation of the air quality parameters. Concentrations of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and V in TSP and PM10 were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Iron was the most abundant element found in both particulate samples. Through chemometric tools, it was possible to point out that the contributions to the TSP and PM10 formation are similar, and strong correlations were observed between Fe-Mn (0.83) and Cd-Pb (0.93) in TSP, and Fe-Mn (0.90), Fe-Cu (0.81) and Cd-Pb (0.97) in PM10, an evidence that these species are from sources related mainly to soil resuspension and vehicular traffic. Enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) showed an influence of fossil fuel burning in the composition of TSP and PM10. Through principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) it was observed particle size distribution groupings according to its aerodynamic size. Evaluation of the concentrations obtained for the collected samples according to the seasons (dry and rainy), indicated the influence of both, biogenic (resuspension of soil and marine aerosols) and anthropic (vehicle traffic and biomass burning) sources.

We used fresh leaves of Sophora japonica L. variety ‘Qingyun 1’ (A0) and 10 superior clones of the same species (A1–A10) to explore leaf morphological characteristics and total particle retention per unit leaf area under natural and artificial simulated dust deposition treatments. Our objectives were to explore the relationship between the two methods and to assess particle size distribution, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) heavy metal content, and scanning electron and atomic force microscopy (SEM and AFM) characteristics of leaf surface microstructure. Using the membership function method, we evaluated the dust retention capacity of each clone based on the mean degree of membership of its dust retention index. Using correlation analysis, we selected leaf morphological and SEM and AFM indices related significantly to dust retention capacity. Sophora japonica showed excellent overall dust retention capacity, although this capacity differed among clones. A5 had the strongest overall retention capacity, A2 had the strongest retention capacity for PM2.5, A9 had the strongest retention capacity for PM2.5–10, A0 had the strongest retention capacity for PM>10, and A2 had the strongest specific surface area (SSA) and heavy metal adsorption capacity. Overall, A1 had the strongest comprehensive dust retention ability, A5 was intermediate, and A7 had the weakest capacity. Certain leaf morphological and SEM and AFM characteristic indices correlated significantly with the dust retention capacity.

Soil has always been the most complex biomaterial on the planet. The rapid determination of the components in the soil and their original source is a prerequisite for soil quality, environmental, and human health risk assessments. In this study, the chemical compositions and source apportionment of surface soil samples collected from five sites in Shanghai, China, were successfully investigated using a laboratory-developed laser ablation single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (LA-SPAMS) instrument combined with an adaptive resonance theory-based neural network algorithm (ART-2a) data-processing method for the first time. In total, more than 35,000 particles, ranging from 200 to 2000 nm, were sized, and around 15-20% of the particles were chemically analyzed by LA-SPAMS to generate both positive and negative mass spectra. The results show that there are significant differences in particle size distribution among the five samples, with peaks of various sizes and different profiles, while all five soil samples contain crustal elements, heavy metals, organic and inorganic components, and so forth. The chemical composition of each sample varied considerably, so different classes of SPAMS particle classes were identified, which were later grouped into seven general categories: EC-rich (containing elemental carbon), secondary components, organic nitrogen, crust, HM (containing heavy metal), PAH (containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), and NaK-rich particles, based on the dominant marked ions. The composition analysis and source apportionment showed that soil components in different areas have been affected by the local environment, such as local industrial emissions and automobile exhaust, which are usually characterized by varying degrees of mixing between the crust and environmental aerosols. In combination with the ART-2a method, LA-SPAMS enables rapid and direct analysis of soil samples based on real-time single-particle measurements, which will help in understanding the distribution, transport, and fate of the soil components, thus providing new insights into soil-quality assessment. Moreover, the established LA-SPAMS can also be practically applied to other daily inspection tasks, such as rocks, minerals, metals, ceramics, polymers, and other solid materials for ingredient analysis and quality evaluation.

The particle size distribution of particulate matter (PM) and concentrations of water-soluble ions were observed in airborne aerosol in the City of Ostrava (the Czech Republic, Moravian-Silesian Region) during winter 2016. The Ostrava area ranks among the most polluted areas not only within the Czech Republic but also in Europe due to the high concentration of industry, especially metallurgy, in this area. The selected water-soluble ions: were studied in different grain size classes of particulate matter separated into 7 fractions (from 0.0175 to 9.93 μm) collected by an electrical low pressure impactor ELPI+. Assessment of the influence of meteorological parameters and various sources of contamination (transportation, industry, and residential burning) in heavily environmentally-burdened urban areas was attempted. This study proved that (K)+ is related to metallurgical processes and its role as an indicator of biomass combustion is negligible. The highest concentrations of all water-soluble ions were determined in particles below 0.952 μm that is generally related to combustion processes. At increased air temperature (in the interval from 0 °C to 10 °C), concentrations of both dust particles and the sum of water-soluble ions are decreasing.

The global SiC market is projected to grow in the coming years, and research on potential health effects as well as epidemiological studies is therefore of importance. A detailed characterization in terms of the phase composition, morphology and mixing state of airborne PM is still missing, though highly necessary to identify sources and to understand the risk factors in this industry. Particles in the size range of 10 nm to 10 µm were collected with a 13-stage NanoMOUDI impactor in the Acheson Furnace Hall as well as in processing departments during two sampling campaigns. Particle mass concentrations, including the fraction of ultrafine particles (UFPs), were lower in the processing departments in comparison to those in the Acheson Furnace Hall. The particle number size distribution measured with a scanning mobility particle sizer confirmed the low amount of UFPs in the processing departments compared to the furnace hall. Significant differences in the particle mass concentration and distribution were observed in the Acheson Furnace Hall during the two sampling campaigns. The PM size distribution depends upon the sampling location, on the cycle of the nearby furnaces and on special incidents occurring during a furnace run. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) showed that the size range of 0.32-10 µm (aerodynamic diameter) is dominated by carbon (C)-rich particles, which were identified as petroleum coke, graphite, soot and amorphous spherical C-rich particles. Soot was further classified into three types based on the primary particle size, morphology and composition. Diesel-powered vehicles, pyrolysis of petroleum coke and incomplete combustion of volatile components from this pyrolysis are suggested as sources of different soot particle types. Amorphous spherical C-rich particles were also sub-classified based on their morphology and composition as tar balls (TBs) and C-spherical type 2. The amount of SiC fibers and crystalline SiO2 was found to be low. In the size fraction below 0.32 µm (aerodynamic diameter), sulphur (S)-rich particles dominate. This knowledge of the particle size distribution, and chemical and physical properties of the PM occurring in the SiC production is fundamental for an appropriate risk assessment, and these findings should have implications for future epidemiological studies and for the mitigation of worker exposure.

Highlights • Particle size distribution is divided in two groups, particles sized under 50 μm and particles within the range of 100–1000 μm. • Soot particles are represented by amorphous carbon, while in 5% of cases structured carbon particles is found. • According to RAMAN spectra, large particles are carbon agglomerates of irregular form. • Samples contained metals hazardous to organisms such as Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ni, Pb and Zn. • Buses running on diesel fuel are the source of emission of predominantly large particles., This research article investigates the particulate matter originated from the exhaust emissions of 20 bus models, within the territory of Vladivostok, Russian Federation. The majority of evaluated buses (17 out of 20) had emissions of large particles with sizes greater than 400 μm, which account for more than 80% of all measured particles. The analysis of the elemental composition showed that the exhaust emissions contained Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ni, Pb, and Zn, with the concentration of Zn prevailing in all samples by two to three orders of magnitude higher than the concentrations of the other elements.

In the last years, many studies have focused on risk assessment of exposure of workers to airborne particulate matter (PM). Several studies indicate a strong correlation between PM and adverse health outcomes, as a function of particle size. In the last years, the study of atmospheric particulate matter has focused more on particles less than 10 μm or 2.5 μm in diameter, however, recent studies identify in particles less than 0.1 μm the main responsibility for negative cardiovascular effects. The present paper deals with the determination of 66 organic compounds belonging to six different classes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the ultrafine, fine and coarse fractions of PM (PM &lt, 0.1 µm, 0.1 &lt, PM &lt, 2.5 µm and 2.5 &lt, 10 µm) collected in three outdoor workplaces and in an urban outdoor area. Data obtained were analyzed with principal component analysis (PCA), in order to underline possible correlation between sites and classes of pollutants and characteristic emission sources. Emission source studies are, in fact, a valuable tool for both identifying the type of emission source and estimating the strength of each contamination source, as useful indicator of environment healthiness. Moreover, both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were determined in order to estimate human health risk associated to study sites. Risk analysis was carried out evaluating the contribution of pollutant distribution in PM size fractions for all the sites. The results highlighted significant differences between the sites and specific sources of pollutants related to work activities were identified. In all the sites and for all the size fractions of PM both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk values were below acceptable and safe levels of risks recommended by the regulatory agencies.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic spread rapidly despite extraordinary screening and social distancing measures. Such rapid spread was due in part to the fact that the disease transmission, particularly via airborne spread, is poorly understood. Characterizing the airborne size distribution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is essential to understanding the risk of airborne transmission. We collected size-fractionated (≤2.5, 2.5-10, and ≥10 μm) samples using a cascade impactor at more than 30 locations inside and outside Jaber Hospital and the nearby Temporary Quarantine Facility in Kuwait from April to July 2020. We hypothesized that airborne SARS-CoV-2 would be present in all size fractions, including fine particles, and in a size distribution that differed by sampling location. We found 6% of the samples (13 out of 210) were positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Concentrations ranged from 3 to 25 copies/m3. The size distribution of particle-associated SARS-CoV-2 was different for each location. Large (≥10 μm) particles with the virus were found in symptomatic patient rooms. Fine (≤2.5 μm) particle-associated SARS-CoV-2 was detected in rooms with intubated patients and outside the hospital entrance gates. Coarse (2.5-10 μm) virus-laden particles were present in all locations with positive samples. This is the most comprehensive study to date on size-fractionated airborne SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Currently, there is an increasing trend in the use of biomass for energy purposes, due to global pressure on the use of renewable energy sources and a gradual decline in fossil fuel stocks. However, biomass combustion can be considered as a significant source of particulate concentrations in the atmosphere. Measurement of particles from biomass combustion plants is very demanding; the particle size range is large, usually ranging from a few nanometers (nm) to a few micrometers (μm). The measurement of the particles is carried out in terms of mass concentrations, numerous concentrations and their particle size distribution. The selection of metering devices for measuring particulate matter and their size distribution is important because different devices differ in their characteristics and have specific advantages and disadvantages. The large particle number concentrations in the flue gas after biomass combustion exceed the detection capacity of some plants, therefore they are used for measurement with flue gas diluents for measurement. At present, the gravimetric method, the method of particulate matter measuring using an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) or a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) is often used. The cascade impactor gravimetric method is based on comparing particles basedon their aerodynamic diameter. APS is a spectrometer that measures particles between 0.5 and 20 μm in size. The working principle is based on the acceleration of aerosol sample flow through an accelerating orifice. SMPS measures the size distribution and concentration of particles in the size range of 1 nm to 1 μm using differential mobility analysis. When the device SMPS is used with the APS, the range increases to 20 μm. This paper focuses on the measurement of particulate matter by tandem connection of APS and SMPS particle sizers using dilution. Dilution is used to eliminate the mechanisms that arise when sampling particles that may affect their properties. These are nucleation, condensation, evaporation and coagulation. The results are then compared with gravimetric measurements.

Commercially available low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors provide output as total or size-specific particle counts and mass concentrations. These quantities are not measured directly but are estimated by the original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) proprietary algorithms and have inherent limitations since particle scattering depends on their composition, size, shape, and complex index of refraction (CRI). Hence, there is a need to characterize and calibrate their performance under a controlled environment. We present calibration algorithms for Plantower PMS A003 sensor as a function of particle size and concentration. A standardized experimental protocol was used to control the PM level, environmental conditions and to evaluate sensor-to-sensor reproducibility. The calibration was based on tests when PMS A003 were exposed to different polydisperse standardized testing aerosols. The results suggested particle size distribution from PMS A003 was shifted compared to reference instrument measures. For calibration of number concentration, linear model without adjusting aerosol properties corrects the raw PMS A003 measurement for specific size bins with normalized mean absolute error within 4.0% of the reference instrument. Although the Bayesian Information Criterion suggests that models adjusting for particle optical properties and relative humidity are technically superior, they should be used with caution as the particle properties used in fitting were within a narrow range for challenge aerosols. The calibration models adjusted for particle CRI and density account for non-linearity in the OEM's mass concentrations estimates and demonstrated lower error. These results have significant implications for using PMS A003 in high concentration environments, including indoor air quality and occupational/industrial exposure assessments, wildfire smoke, or near-source monitoring scenarios.

Ultrafine particle emissions originating from fused deposition modeling (FDM) three-dimensional (3D) printers have received widespread attention recently. However, the obvious inconsistency and uncertainty in particle emission rates (PERs, #/min) measured by chamber systems still remain, owing to different measurement conditions and calculation models used. Here, a dynamic analysis of the size-resolved PER is conducted through a comparative study of chamber and flow tunnel measurements. Two models to resolve PER from the chamber and a model for flow tunnel measurements were examined. It was found that chamber measurements for different materials underestimated PER by up to an order of magnitude and overestimated particle diameters by up to 2.3 times, while the flow tunnel measurements provided more accurate results. Field measurements of the time-resolved particle size distribution (PSD) in a typical room environment could be predicted well by the flow tunnel measurements, while the chamber measurements could not represent the main PSD characteristics (e.g., particle diameter mode). Secondary aerosols (>30 nm) formed in chambers were not observed in field measurements. Flow tunnel measurements were adopted for the first time as a possible alternative for the study of 3D printer emissions to overcome the disadvantages in chamber methods and as a means to predict exposure levels. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of the particles in a typical commercial laying hen barn in Southeast China. Mass concentrations and size distributions of the particulate matter (PM) and the key components (incl. organic carbon (OC), element carbon (EC), and the water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs)) were analyzed. The result shows that the mass concentrations of PM accumulated along with the airflow inside the house, with the total mass of the sampling particles increasing from 843.66 ± 160.74 μg/m3 at the center of the house to 1264.93 ± 285.70 μg/m3 at the place close to exhaust fans. The share of non-exhaust particles, including tire wear particles (TWP), within the airborne dust and particularly within PM10 has increased in recent years due to a significant reduction of other particles including exhaust road traffic emissions. However, the quantification of TWP is a demanding task due to the non-specificity of tracers, and the fact that they are commonly contained in analytically challenging low concentrations (e.g. Zn, styrene, 1,3-butadiene, vinylcyclohexene). This difficulty is amplified by the chemical and morpho-textural heterogeneity of TWP resulting from the interaction between the tires and the road surface. In contrast to bulk techniques, automated single particle SEM/EDX analysis can benefit from the ubiquitous heterogeneity of environmental TWP as a diagnostic criterion for their identification and quantification. For this purpose, we follow a machine-learning (ML) approach that makes use of an extensive number (67) of morphological, textural (backscatter-signal based) and chemical descriptors to differentiate environmental particles into the following classes: TWP, metals, minerals and biogenic/organic. We present a ML-based model developed to classify airborne samples (trained by >100,000 environmental particles including 6841 TWP), and its application within a one-year monitoring campaign at two Swiss sites. In this study, the mass concentrations of TWP in the airborne fractions PM80-10, PM10-2.5 and PM2.5-1 were determined. Furthermore, the particle size distribution and shape characteristics of 5621 TWP were evaluated. A cut through a TWP by means of FIB-SEM evidences that the mineral and metal particles typically found in TWP are not only present on the particle surface but also throughout the complete TWP volume. At the urban background site, the annual average mass fraction of TWP and micro-rubber in PM10 was 1.8% (0.28 μg/m3) and 0.9%, respectively. At the urban kerbside site, the corresponding values were 6 times higher amounting to 10.5% (2.24 μg/m3) for TWP, and 5.0% for micro-rubber.

Soil-derived dust particles produced by aeolian (wind) processes have significant impacts on humans and the Earth&rsquo, s systems. The soil particle size distribution is a major soil characteristic in dust emission models. Yet empirical information on the dependence of dust emission thresholds on soil particle size distribution is still lacking. The main goal of this study was to explore the dust emission threshold from semi-arid loess soil samples by a targeted wind-tunnel experiment. The results clearly show that the dust emission threshold is associated with the saltation threshold with no distinct direct aerodynamic lifting of the loose dust particle. The dust flux depends on the amount of the clay-silt fraction in the soil, the shear velocity, and the saltation flux under certain shear velocity. The study aimed to advance our understating of the dust emission processes, and to provide empirical information for parametrization in dust emission models and for management strategy of soils in preventing dust emission.

Dust emission resulted from soil erosion by wind with significant impacts of soil (nutrient) loss and air pollution of particulate matter (PM). The ejection of dust from soil aggregates due to saltation has been hypothesized to play a major role in dust emission. Yet empirical information on the role of different aggregate sizes in dust emission is still lacking. The main goal of this study was to explore the dust emission threshold in different aggregate sizes of a semiarid loess soil. To this end, we conducted targeted wind-tunnel experiment on dust emission. The results show that dust emission from aggregate at size of 63&ndash, 250 &micro, m, 250&ndash, 500 &micro, m, and 500&ndash, 1000 &micro, m is enabled only under the conditions of saltation. The dust-PM threshold at shear velocities of 0.24&ndash, 0.52 m/s depends on the aggregates size. Aggregates at the size of saltators (125&ndash, m) were the most productive in dust generation by the mechanism of aggregate disintegration. In our bulk sample, the aggregate group of 63&ndash, m has the highest contribution to the total dust emission. The study aimed to advance our capability in soil resources management and for model parameterization in dust emission schemes.

Exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) is associated with a number of adverse health effects. However, it is unclear which aspects of PM are most hazardous, and a better understanding of particle sizes and personal exposure is needed. We characterized particle size distribution (PSD) from biomass-related pollution and assessed total and regional lung-deposited doses using multiple-path deposition modeling. Gravimetric measurements of kitchen and personal PM(2.5) (< 2.5 μm in size) exposures were collected in 180 households in rural Puno, Peru. Direct-reading measurements of number concentrations were collected in a subset of 20 kitchens for particles 0.3–25 μm, and the continuous PSD was derived using a nonlinear least-squares method. Mean daily PM(2.5) kitchen concentration and personal exposure was 1205±942 μg/m(3) and 115±167 μg/m(3) respectively, and the mean mass concentration consisted of a primary accumulation mode at 0.21 μm and a secondary coarse mode at 3.17 μm. Mean daily lung-deposited surface area (LDSA) and LDSA during cooking were 1009.6±1469.8 μm(2)/cm(3) and 10,552.5±8261.6 μm(2)/cm(3), respectively. This study presents unique data regarding lung deposition of biomass smoke that could serve as a reference for future studies, and provides a novel, more biologically-relevant metric for exposure-response analysis compared to traditional size-based metrics.

Metal-based fuel borne catalysts (FBC) have been extensively studied as an effective technology to reduce diesel particles and assist diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration. In this study, FBC fuels were prepared with Fe element mass fractions of 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg (marked as Diesel, Fe100, Fe200, Fe300 and Fe400). The effects of FBC additions on fuel economy and emission characteristics were carried out on a common-rail engine. Also, particle size distribution, microstructure, surface functional groups, element content and oxidation properties of exhaust particles were systematically analyzed. Results showed that the brake thermal efficiency was improved with the addition of FBC in diesel fuel, especially at low load, and the NOx and smoke emissions showed a decreasing trend. Compared with Diesel particles, the total mass concentration and the mean particle diameter of Fe300 particles decreased, the overall particle size distribution moved from coarse mode to accumulation mode, however, the total number concentration increased. Fe300 particles had larger layer spacing and microcrystalline curvature, smaller microcrystalline size and lower graphitization. In addition, the relative contents of OH and aliphatic C–H in Fe300 particles were higher than those in Diesel particles. The relative content of C atoms in Fe300 particles decreased, while the relative content of O atoms increased. Temperature-programmed-oxidation experiments indicated that semi-volatile organic components appeared in Fe300 particles, the peak temperature of weight loss rate decreased by 131 °C as compared with Diesel particles, the activation energy was also significantly lower, and therefore the particle oxidation activity was improved.

Atmospheric semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are complex in their chemical and toxicological characteristics with sources from both primary combustion emissions and secondary oxygenated aerosol formation processes. In this study, thermal desorption of PM2.5 in association with online measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was carried out to study the role of SVOCs in its gas-particle partitioning. The mass concentrations of PM2.5, black carbon (BC) and p-PAHs downstream of a thermodenuder were measured online at different temperature settings (25, 50, 100, and 200 °C) to characterize PM physico-chemical properties. While the mass concentrations of PM2.5 and p-PAHs reduced to ∼34% at 200 °C compared to that in ambient temperature, BC mass concentration has decreased by 30% at the highest temperature. Furthermore, the submicron particle size distribution showed reduced particle number concentration in Aitken mode at 200 °C heating. The ROS, measured by Particle-into-Nitroxide-Quencher, also showed reduction and followed a similar trend with PM measurements, where the total ROS decreased by 12%, 31%, and 53% at 50 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C, respectively, compared to the ambient sample. When a HEPA filter was included in the upstream of samples, 39% of gas phase ROS reduction was observed at 200 °C. This provided a good estimate of the contribution of SVOCs in ROS production in PM2.5, where decreased SVOCs concentration at 200 °C increased the percentage of particle surface area. This concludes that the surface chemistry of these organic coatings on the particles is important for assessing the health impacts of PM.

Although it is known that increases in ambient particulate matter (PM) levels are associated with elevated occurrence of adverse health outcomes, the understanding of the mechanisms of PM-related health effects is limited by our knowledge of how particle size and composition are altered subsequent to inhalation through respiratory-deposited processing. Here we present a particle-generated hydroxyl radical (·OH) study of the size-resolved particles as particles are inhaled in the human respiratory tract (RT), and we show that accumulation-mode particles are significant factors (71-75%) in ·OH generation of lung-deposited particles using Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model. The ability of PM to catalyze ·OH generation is mainly related to transition metals, particularly towards the upper regions of the RT (75%), and to quinones deeper in the lung (42-46%). Identification of this generation ability induced by chemical composition has shown that four potential sources (biomass burning, incomplete combustion, mobile & industry, and mineral dust) are responsible for ·OH generation. With ·OH-forming ability after PM inhalation implicated as the first step towards revealing the subsequent toxic processes, this work draws a connection between the detailed ·OH chemistry occurring on size-resolved particles and a possible toxicological mechanism based on chemical composition and sources.

Low-cost methods for measuring airborne microparticles and nanoparticles (aerosols) have remained elusive despite the increasing concern of health impacts from ambient, urban, and indoor sources. While bipolar ion sources are common in smoke alarms, this work is the first to exploit the mean charge on an aerosol resulting from a bipolar charge equilibrium and establish experimentally its correlation to properties of the aerosol particle size distribution. The net current produced from this mean particle charge is demonstrated to be linearly proportional to the product of the mean particle diameter and total number concentration (i ∼ Nd̅) for two bipolar ion sources (85Kr and 241Am). This conclusion is supported by simple equations derived from well-established bipolar charging theory. The theory predicts that the mean charge on the aerosol particles reaches an equilibrium, which, importantly, is independent of the concentration of charging ions. Furthermore, in situ measurements of a roadside aerosol demonstrate that the sensing method yields results in good agreement (R2 = 0.979) with existing portable and laboratory-grade aerosol instruments. The simplicity, stability, and cost of the bipolar ion source overcome challenges of other portable sensors, increasing the feasibility of widespread sensor deployment to monitor ultrafine particle characteristics, which are relevant to lung deposition and by extension, human health.

The applied surface dose is a key parameter for the measurement of toxic effects of airborne particles by air liquid interface exposure of human lung cells. Besides online measurement of the deposited particle mass by quartz crystal microbalance frequently other dose metrics such as particle size distribution, surface and agglomeration state are required. These particle properties and their spatial distribution can be determined by digital processing of micrographs obtained by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Here, we report the development and characterization of a novel holder for film coated TEM copper grids, which allows for sampling under identical geometric and ambient conditions as in a cell culture chamber. The sample holder avoids artefacts by reliable grounding of the grids and improves handling of the grids to prevent damage of the sensitive film. This sample holder is applied during exposure experiments with titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The measured dose of 0.2 µg/cm² corresponds well to the mass loading signal of the quartz crystal microbalance. Additionally, the spatial distribution of particles on the sampling surface shows a good homogeneity of deposition. Presented here are size-resolved aerosol measurements conducted using cascade impactor set at breathing zone in indoor-outdoor residential microenvironments. PM2.5 contributed about 64–80% of PM10 in which over 29% of mass was shared by PM0.25. Total PM concentration varied from 261 ± 22 μg/m3 (indoors) to 256 ± 64 μg/m3 (outdoors) annually; whilst summer and monsoon demonstrated 1.2- and 1.9- times lower concentration than winters. Many studies exist that characterize the aerosol emissions from fused filament fabrication three-dimensional (3D) printers. However, nanocluster aerosol (NCA) particles, that is particles in a size range under 3 nm, are rarely studied. The purpose of this study was to characterize the NCA emissions and the contribution of NCA to the total particle number emissions from a 3D printer. We used a particle size magnifier and a scanning mobility particle sizer to measure the time evolution of particle size distribution, which was used to calculate the average NCA emission rates during a printer operation in a chamber. The NCA emission rates ranged from 1.4 × 106 to 7.3 × 109 s-1 depending on the applied combination of filament material and nozzle temperature, showing increasing emission with increasing temperature. The NCA emissions constitute from 9 to 48% of the total emissions, that is, almost half of the particle emissions may have been previously neglected. Therefore, it is essential to include the low NCA size range in, for example, future 3D-printer-testing protocols, emission measurement standards, and risk management measures. acceptedVersion

After the Fukushima Daiichi-Nuclear Power Plant accident, environmental recovery was a major issue because a considerable amount of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash was highly contaminated with radioactive cesium. To the best of our knowledge, only a few studies have evaluated the detailed physicochemical properties of radioactive cesium in MSWI fly ash to propose an effective method for the solidification and reuse of MSWI fly ash. In this study, MSWI fly ash was sampled in Fukushima Prefecture. The physicochemical properties of radioactive cesium in MSWI fly ash were evaluated by particle size classification (less than 25, 25–45, 45–100, 100–300, 300–500, and greater than 500 μm) and the Japanese leaching test No. 13 called “JLT-13”. These results obtained from the classification of fly ash indicated that the activity concentration of radioactive cesium and the content of the coexisting matter (i.e., chloride and potassium) temporarily change in response to the particle size of fly ash. X-ray diffraction results indicated that water-soluble radioactive cesium exists as CsCl because of the cooling process and that insoluble cesium is bound to the inner sphere of amorphous matter. These results indicated that the distribution of radioactive cesium depends on the characteristics of MSWI fly ash.

Download ash and emission dust samples were collected from sintering, coking, ironmaking and steelmaking processes of iron and steel enterprises in Laiwu. Sixteen kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority controlled lists were quantitatively analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Laser particle size analyzer was used to obtain the distribution pattern of download ash. It was found that the diameter distribution pattern from four production processes was quite different. The proportion of fine particulate (0&ndash, 2.5 &mu, m) was the highest (72.62%) in the steelmaking refining process, and was 28.962% in the ironmaking process. Moreover, the particle size in download ash from steelmaking refining is all less than 10 &mu, m and that from the ironmaking process was 52.92%. The medium-sized particles (10&ndash, 100 &mu, m) were dominant in sinter and coking download ashes. The total PAHs (&sum, 16PAHs) mass concentration ranged from 0.49 &plusmn, 0.06 to 69.63 &plusmn, 5.57 &mu, g&middot, g&minus, 1 in download ash samples, and varied from 2.815 &plusmn, 0.253 to 19.429 &plusmn, 2.545 &mu, m&minus, 3 in emission dust samples. The &sum, 16PAHs values were both largest in download ash and dust emission from the coking process (69.63 &plusmn, 1 and 19.429 &plusmn, 3, respectively). The most abundant individual PAHs were benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]anthracene in ash samples, and benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene in emission dust samples. Dominant compounds were high-molecular weight (four- to six-ring) PAHs in both ash and dust samples. The concentration order of individual compounds in PM10 and PM2.5 in ambient air around the steel plant was completely consistent with each other, and the concentration of &sum, 16PAHs was the highest in the steel plant and lowest in Daqin village because of upwind of the steel plant. The concentrations of benzo[b]fluoranthene and fluoranthene in ambient air were comparatively high, and were in accordance with the higher concentration of the two monomers in the download ash samples, which suggested that the effect of the emission flue gas from the steel plant on ambient air was necessary to concern.

A pilot study was undertaken to characterize the concentration, duration and particle size distribution of the talc cloud that forms in the personal breathing zone (PBZ) during application of certain talc-containing cosmetics. Multiple direct-reading instruments were employed to simultaneously monitor PM4 concentrations (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter &lt, 4 &micro, m, mg/m3) at different distances from each of three subjects while they applied talc products. Results indicated that the purpose and method of applying the talc product, combined with behavioral and physical differences amongst subjects, all strongly influenced airborne talc concentrations and the duration of the cloud. Air concentrations of talc in the PBZ averaged around 1.0 mg/m3, and the duration of exposure varied from less than one minute to more than ten minutes. The real-time monitors captured the occasional formation of secondary clouds, likely caused by resuspension of talc particles from skin or other surfaces. Measurements of aerosolized baby powder, face powder, and two adult body powders indicated that the median aerodynamic diameter of the talc cloud ranged from 1.7 to 2.0 &micro, m. These direct-reading approaches were valuable for providing detailed characterization of short duration exposures to airborne talc particles, and will be useful to support future exposure assessments of talc and other powders in consumer products.

A large number of studies have shown much higher health effects of particulate matter (PM) during the warm compared to the cold season. In this paper we present the results of an experimental study carried out in an unoccupied test apartment with the aim of understanding the reasons behind the seasonal variations of the health effects due to ambient PM2.5 exposure. Measurements included indoor and outdoor PM2.5 mass and chemical composition as well as particle size distribution of ultrafine particles. Monitoring campaigns were carried out during summer and winter following a ventilation protocol developed to replicate typical occupant behaviour according to a questionnaire-based survey. Our findings showed that seasonal variation of the relationship between ambient and indoor mass concentrations cannot entirely explain the apparent difference in PM toxicity between seasons and size distribution and chemical composition of particles were identified as other possible causes of changes in the apparent PM toxicity. Recently, the problem of indoor particulate matter pollution has received much attention. An increasing number of epidemiological studies show that the concentration of atmospheric particulate matter has a significant effect on human health, even at very low concentrations. Most of these investigations have relied upon outdoor particle concentrations as surrogates of human exposures. However, considering that the concentration distribution of the indoor particulate matter is largely dependent on the extent to which these particles penetrate the building and on the degree of suspension in the indoor air, human exposures to particles of outdoor origin may not be equal to outdoor particle concentration levels. Therefore, it is critical to understand the relationship between the particle concentrations found outdoors and those found in indoor micro-environments. In this study, experiments were conducted using a naturally ventilated office located in Qingdao, China. The indoor and outdoor particle concentrations were measured at the same time using an optical counter with four size ranges. The particle size distribution ranged from 0.3 to 2.5 μm, and the experimental period was from April to September, 2016. Based on the experimental data, the dynamic and mass balance model based on time was used to estimate the penetration rate and deposition rate at air exchange rates of 0.03-0.25 h-1. The values of the penetration rate and deposition velocity of indoor particles were determined to range from 0.45 to 0.82 h-1 and 1.71 to 2.82 m/h, respectively. In addition, the particulate pollution exposure in the indoor environment was analyzed to estimate the exposure hazard from indoor particulate matter pollution, which is important for human exposure to particles and associated health effects. The conclusions from this study can serve to provide a better understanding the dynamics and behaviors of airborne particle entering into buildings. And they will also highlight effective methods to reduce exposure to particles in office buildings.

A size-segregated gas/particle partitioning coefficient KPi was proposed and evaluated in the predicting models on the basis of atmospheric polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) field data comparing with the bulk coefficient KP. Results revealed that the characteristics of atmospheric PBDEs in southeast Shanghai rural area were generally consistent with previous investigations, suggesting that this investigation was representative to the present pollution status of atmospheric PBDEs. KPi was generally greater than bulk KP, indicating an overestimate of TSP (the mass concentration of total suspended particles) in the expression of bulk KP. In predicting models, KPi led to a significant shift in regression lines as compared to KP, thus it should be more cautious to investigate sorption mechanisms using the regression lines. The differences between the performances of KPi and KP were helpful to explain some phenomenon in predicting investigations, such as PL0 and KOA models overestimate the particle fractions of PBDEs and the models work better at high temperature than at low temperature. Our findings are important because they enabled an insight into the influence of particle size on predicting models.

One of the main characteristics of Antarctic buildings is the fact that they are designed mostly with a focus on energy efficiency. Although human activity is a major source of pollution, indoor air quality is not a matter of significant concern during building planning. This study examines the relationship between indoor activities in an Antarctic Research Station and the size distribution of particulate matter. Real-time particle size distribution data is used in conjunction with time-activity data. The activity number ratio is calculated using the mean number of particles found in each size range during each activity divided by the average number of particles found during a period characterized by the absence of human activities. Cooking, the use of cosmetics, waste incineration and exhaust from light vehicles were responsible for significant deterioration of indoor air related to the presence of fine and ultrafine particles. Cleaning, physical exercise and the movement of people were responsible for the emission of coarse particles. This article emphasizes the importance of post-occupancy evaluation of buildings, generating results relevant to the planning and layout of new buildings, especially regarding better indoor air quality.

Particle size distribution of particulate polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) is one of the important factors controlling human exposure to PACs in air. In this study, size-segregated airborne particle samples were collected in a megacity in southwest China to analyze PACs concentrations and evaluate related health risks. Annual average concentrations of Σ19PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 17.4 ng/m3) and Σ10OPAHs (oxygenated PAHs, 15.3 ng/m3) were one order of magnitude higher than those of Σ9MPAHs (methyl PAHs, 0.97 ng/m3) and Σ27NPAHs (nitrated PAHs, 1.54 ng/m3). Studies on the variation in the particulate matter (PM) content, Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (SIRM), and particle grain-size distribution at a high spatial resolution are helpful in evaluating the important role of urban forests in PM removal. In this study, the trees located in dense urban forests (T0) retained more PM than trees located in open spaces (T1–T4), the SIRM and PM weight of T0 were 1.54–2.53 and 1.04–1.47 times more than those of T1–T4, respectively. In addition, the SIRM and PM weight decreased with increasing distance to the road, suggesting that distance from pollution sources plays a key role in reducing the air concentration of PM. The different grain-size components were determined from frequency curve plots using a laser particle-size analyzer. A unimodal spectrum with a major peak of approximately 20 μm and a minor peak between 0.1 and 1 μm was observed, indicating that a large proportion of fine air PM was retained by the needles of the study trees. Additionally, more &lt, 2.5 μm size fraction particles were observed at the sampling site near the traffic source but, compared to a tree in a row of trees, the percentage of the &gt, 10 μm size fraction for the tree in the dense urban forest was higher, indicating that the particles deposited on the needle surface originating from traffic sources were finer than those from natural atmospheric dust. The exploration of the variation in the PM weight, SIRM, and grain size of the particles deposited on the needle surface facilitates monitoring the removal of PM by urban forests under different environmental conditions (e.g., in closed dense urban forests and in open roadside spaces), different distances to roads, and different sampling heights above the ground.

Chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) are emerging semi-volatile organic pollutants in haze-associated particulate matter (PM). There are multiple elements which enable coal geochemistry: (1) boiler and pollution control system design parameters, (2) temperature of flue gas at collection point, (3) feed coal and also other fuels like petroleum coke, tires and biomass geochemistry and (4) fuel feed particle size distribution homogeneity distribution, maintenance of pulverisers, etc. Even though there is a large number of hazardous element pollutants in the coal-processing industry, investigations on micrometer and nanometer-sized particles including their aqueous colloids formation reactions and their behaviour entering the environment are relatively few in numbers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), High Resolution-Transmission Electron microscopy (HR-TEM)/ (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) EDS/ (selected-area diffraction pattern) SAED, Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM)/EDS and granulometric distribution analysis were used as an integrated characterization techniques tool box to determine both geochemistry and nanomineralogy for coal fly ashes (CFAs) from Brazil´s largest coal power plant. Ultrafine/nano-particles size distribution from coal combustion emissions was estimated during the tests. In addition the iron and silicon content was determined as 54.6% of the total 390 different particles observed by electron bean, results aimed that these two particles represent major minerals in the environment particles normally. These data may help in future investigations to asses human health actions related with nano-particles.
