The Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region is a metropolitan area with the most severe fine particle (PM 2.5) pollution in China. An accurate emission inventory plays an important role in air pollution control policy making. In this study, we develop a unit-based emission inventory for industrial sectors in the BTH region, including power plants, industrial boilers, steel, non-ferrous metal smelting, coking plants, cement, glass, brick, lime, ceramics, refineries, and chemical industries, based on detailed information for each enterprise, such as location, annual production, production technology/processes, and air pollution control facilities. In the BTH region, the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter with diameter less than 10 µ m (PM 10), PM 2.5 , black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), and non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) from industrial sectors were 869, 1164, 910, 622, 71, 63, and 1390 kt in 2014, respectively, accounting for a respective 61 %, 55 %, 62 %, 56 %, 58 %, 22 %, and 36 % of the total emissions. Compared with the traditional proxy-based emission inventory, much less emissions in the high-resolution unit-based inventory are allocated to the urban centers due to the accurate positioning of industrial enterprises. We apply the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ; version 5.0.2) model simulation to evaluate the unit-based inventory. The simulation results show that the unit-based emission inventory shows better performance with respect to both PM 2.5 and gaseous pollutants than the proxy-based emission inventory. The normalized mean biases (NMBs) are 81 %, 21 %, 1 %, and -7 % for the concentrations of SO2 , NO2 , ozone (O3), and PM 2.5 , respectively, with the unit-based inventory, in contrast to 124 %, 39 %, -8 %, and 9 % with the proxy-based inventory; furthermore, the concentration gradients of PM 2.5 , which are defined as the ratio of the urban concentration to the suburban concentration, are 1.6, 2.1, and 1.5 in January and 1.3, 1.5, and 1.3 in July, for simulations with the unit-based inventory, simulations with the proxy-based inventory, and observations, respectively, in Beijing. For O3 , the corresponding gradients are 0.7, 0.5, and 0.9 in January and 0.9, 0.8, and 1.1 in July, implying that the unit-based emission inventory better reproduces the distributions of pollutant emissions between the urban and suburban areas. The regional transport of particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2:5) plays an important role in the air pollution of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in China. However, previous studies on regional transport of PM2:5 mainly aim at province level, which is insufficient for the development of an optimal joint PM2:5 control strategy. In this study, we calculate PM2:5 inflows and outflows through the administrative boundaries of three major cities in the BTH region, i.e., Beijing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang, using the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting model)-CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality) modeling system. The monthly average inflow fluxes indicate the major directions of PM2:5 transport. For Beijing, the PM2:5 inflow fluxes from Zhangjiakou (in the northwest) and Baoding (in the southwest) constitute 57% of the total in winter and Langfang (in the southeast) and Baoding constitute 73% in summer. Based on the net PM2:5 fluxes and their vertical distributions, we find there are three major transport pathways in the BTH region: the northwest-southeast pathway in winter (at all levels below 1000 m), the northwest- southeast pathway in summer (at all levels below 1000 m) and the southwest-northeast pathway in both winter and in summer (mainly at 300-1000 m). In winter, even if surface wind speeds are low, the transport at above 300m can still be strong. Among the three pathways, the southwest-northeast happens along with PM2:5 concentrations 30 and 55%higher than the monthly average in winter and summer, respectively. Analysis of two heavy pollution episodes in January and July in Beijing show a much (8-16 times) stronger transport than the monthly average, emphasizing the joint air pollution control of the cities located on the transport pathways, especially during heavy pollution episodes. In order to cope with heavy haze pollution in China, the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan including phased goals of the fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) was issued in 2013. In this study, China's emission inventories in the baseline 2012 and the future scenarios of 2017 and 2020 have been developed based on this Action Plan. Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) region, one of the most polluted regions in China, was taken as a case to assess the impact of phased emission control measures on PM 2.5 concentration reduction using WRF-CMAQ model system. With the implementation of the Action Plan, the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO X ) , PM 2.5 , non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC), and ammonia (NH 3 ) in 2017 will decrease by36%, 31%, 30%,12%, and − 10% from the 2012 levels in Jing-Jin-Ji, respectively. In 2020, the emissions of SO 2 , NO X, PM 2.5 , NMVOC, and NH 3 will decrease by 40%, 44%, 40%, 22%, and − 3% from the 2012 levels in Jing-Jin-Ji, respectively. Consequently, the ambient annual PM 2.5 concentration under the scenarios of 2017 and 2020 will be 28.3% and 37.8% lower than those in 2012, respectively. The Action Plan provided an effective approach to alleviate PM 2.5 pollution level in Jing-Jin-Ji region. However, emission control of NMVOC and NH 3 should be paid more attention and be strengthened in future. Meanwhile, emission control of NO x , SO 2 , NH 3 and NMVOC synergistically are highly needed in the future because multiple pollutants impact on PM 2.5 and O 3 concentrations nonlinearly. Monitoring of particulate matter (PM) is important in air quality, public health, and epidemiological studies and in decision-making for policy implementation. In the present study, the temporal variability of surface-measured PM concentrations ([PM]) and their relationship with meteorological variables and aerosol optical depth (AOD), with the aid from source apportionment studies, are investigated at four urban cities in the Chinese Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region during January 2014 to December 2017. The annual mean concentrations of [PM2.5] ([PM10]) observed at Shanghai (SH), Nanjing (NJ), Hangzhou (HZ), and Hefei (HF) were 46.98 ± 12.21, 54.84 ± 46.14, 52.82 ± 16.98, and 64.03 ± 20.57 μg m−3 (68.07 ± 14.33, 96.48 ± 26.86, 83.08 ± 22.38, and 97.61 ± 20.19 μg m−3), respectively. However, the [PM] exceeded the Chinese National Air Quality Standards of GB3095-2012, being higher (lower) during winter (summer). The [PM] was found higher in the morning (08:00–10:00 LT) and evening (18:00–20:00 LT) and lower in early morning (04:00 LT) and afternoon (14:00 LT) attributed to the dynamics of boundary layer height and varied emission sources. With an annual mean of 0.6–0.7, the PM ratio (PMr = PM2.5/PM10) was observed to have a single peak distribution in all seasons indicating the dominance of fine particles (PM2.5). Further, the [PM10] and [PM2.5] were highly correlated (r ≥ 0.90) in all cities, with slope > 0.70 representing the abundance of fine particles, except for NJ (< 0.70). A low correlation (< 0.5) was noticed between [PM10] and AOD550 suggesting that the aerosol particles had a large influence on AOD, contributing less to PM10. Finally, the concentration bivariate probability function (CBPF) and trajectory statistical models like potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) suggested that local and regional sources contributed a lot for the high [PM2.5] observed at the four cities in the YRD, China. Mercury pollution control has become a global goal. The accurate estimate of long-term mercury emissions in China is critical to evaluate the global mercury budget and the emission reduction potentials. In this study, we used a technology-based approach to compile a consistent series of China's atmospheric mercury emissions at provincial level from 1978 to 2014. China totally emitted 13 294 t of anthropogenic mercury to air during 1978-2014, in which gaseous elemental mercury, gaseous oxidized mercury, and particulate-bound mercury accounted for 58.2%, 37.1%, and 4.7%, respectively. The mercury removed during this period were 2085 t in coal-fired power plants (counting 49% of mercury input), 7259 t in Zn smelting (79%), 771 t in coal-fired industrial boilers (25%), and 658 t in cement production plants (27%), respectively. Annual mercury emissions increased from 147 t in 1978 to 530 t in 2014. Both sectoral and spatial emissions of atmospheric mercury experienced significant changes. The largest mercury emission source evolved from coal-fired industrial boilers before 1998, to zinc smelting during 1999-2004, coal-fired power plants during 2005-2008, finally to cement production after 2009.
