Abstract: The RI Beam Factory (RIBF) is presently the top world-class radioactive-isotope (RI) beam facility in the world. This facility is based on the in-flight method to produce fast RI beams. High-energy and intense primary beams accelerated by a superconducting ring cyclotron (SRC) are converted, via the projectile fragmentation or fission reaction channels, to RI beams at a new fragment separator called BigRIPS. Construction of SRC and BigRIPS has been completed in March, 2007. Construction of major experimental installations has been commenced in 2007. Recent studies on nuclear structure by using radioactive isotope beams available at the RIKEN projectile-fragment separator (RIPS) are introduced. Special emphasis is given to experiments selected from recent programs that highlight studies; the particle stability of very neutron-rich nuclei, 34Ne, 37Na and 43Si, the nuclear structure of 27F, 30Ne and 34Si at N ∼ 20, and the anomalous quadrupole transition in 16C. The first excited 2+ state (885 keV) of 32Mg and its corresponding deformation parameter β2 are studied with proton inelastic scattering at 190MeV/nucleon using in-beam γ technology with a thick target. Angular distributions of the inelastic scattering cross sections are analyzed with coupled-channel calculations. The deformation parameter β2 = 0.41(3) obtained in this work agrees with the earlier experimental results obtained at lower beam energies. Our work demonstrates that the structure of unstable nuclei can be studied with proton inelastic scattering at high incident energies in the vicinity of 200MeV/nucleon using thick targets.
