Abstract

The production of K0, Λ and {Mathematical expression} particles is studied in the E665 muon-nucleon experiment at Fermilab. The average multiplicities and squared transverse momenta are measured as a function of xF and W2. Most features of the data can be well described by the Lund model. Within this model, the data on the K0/π± ratios and on the average K0 multiplicity in the forward region favor a strangeness suppression factor s/u in the fragmentation process near 0.20. Clear evidence for QCD effects is seen in the average squared transverse momentum of K0 and Λ particles. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Results on density integrals Fq(Q2) and correlation integrals Kq(Q2) are presented for the first time in muon-nucleon scattering at ∼ 490 GeV, using data from the E665 experiment at the Tevatron of Fermilab. A clear rise of the Fq integrals with decreasing size of the phase-space cells (“intermittency”) is observed for pairs and triplets of negative hadrons whereas the effect is much weaker for mixed charge combinations. From these findings it is concluded that the observed intermittency signal is mainly caused by Bose-Einstein interference. Furthermore, no energy (W) dependence of F2(Q2) is observed within the W range of the E665 experiment. Finally, the third-order correlation integrals K3(Q2) are found to be significantly different from zero which implies the presence of genuine three-particle correlations in muon-nucleon interactions.

Abstract

In this paper the spectrometer constructed by the E665 Collaboration is described. The spectrometer was built during the period 1982–87 and the first data were taken during the 1987–88 Fixed Target run of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) Tevatron. This is the first of a series of runs in which a comprehensive program of high energy muon scattering experiments will be performed.

Abstract

The diffractive production of ρ0(770 @#@) mesons in muon-proton interactions is studied in the kinematic region 0.15 GeV2 < Q2 < 20 GeV2 and 20 GeV < ? < 420 GeV. The data were obtained in the Fermilab fixed-target experiment E665 with primary muons of 470 GeV energy. Results are presented on the Q2, x and ? dependence of the cross section, on the shape of the ρ+ρt - mass spectrum, on the slope of the diffraction peak and on the production and decay angular distributions of the ρ0(770). The cross section for diffractive production of ρ0 by virtual photons on protons depends mainly on Q2. At fixed Q2, no significant dependence on x or ? is observed. The extrapolation to Q2 = 0 yields a photoproduction cross section of (10.30 ± 0.33) μb. The slope of the t′ distribution has a value of (7.0 ± 0.2) GeV−2, with a tendency to decrease as Q2 increases. The production and decay angular distributions of the ρ0 depend strongly on Q2 and are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The ratio R = σ l /σ t deduced from the decay angular distributions rises strongly with Q2, passing the value of 1 at Q2 ≈ 2 GeV2.

Abstract

The production of charged hadrons is studied in μXe and μD interactions at 490 GeV beam energy. The data were taken at the Tevatron at Fermilab with the E665 spectrometer, equipped with a streamer chamber as vertex detector. Differences between the μXe and μD data are explained by cascading of hadrons in the Xe nucleus. The average multiplicity of charged hadrons in μXe scattering is compared to previously published pXe scattering data and is found to be strongly reduced. This is traced back to the low number of ‘projectile’ collisions in μXe interactions. From a study of thex Bj dependence of hadron production in μXe scattering, and by considering events with a large rapidity gap, evidence is found for a significant contribution of diffractive scattering, which is enhanced in the kinematic region where shadowing of the cross section is observed. This result supports recent models in which diffractive scattering and nuclear shadowing are closely related.

Abstract

Using data from the Fermilab fixed target experiment E665, general properties of forward produced charged hadrons in μp interactions at a primary muon energy of 470 GeV are investigated. The normalized inclusive single-particle distributions for Feynman-x D(xF) and for the transverse momentum D(pt2, xF) are measured as a function of W and Q2. The dependence of the average transverse momentum squared 〈pt2〉 on xF, W and Q2 is studied. The increasing contribution from diffractive production as Q2 decreases leads to a reduction of the average charged hadron multiplicities at low (positive) xF and an enhancement at large xF, for Q2 ≲ 10 GeV2. It also reduces 〈pt2〉 for Q2 ≲ 5 GeV2 and 0.4 ≲ xF < 1.0. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Abstract

Nuclear transparencies measured in exclusive incoherent ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{0}$ meson production from hydrogen, deuterium, carbon, calcium, and lead in muon-nucleus scattering are reported. The data were obtained with the E665 spectrometer using the Fermilab Tevatron muon beam with a mean beam energy of 470 GeV. Increases in the nuclear transparencies are observed as the virtuality of the photon increases, in qualitative agreement with the expectations of color transparency.

Abstract

Fermilab Experiment-665 measured deep-inelastic scattering of 490 GeV muons off deuterium and xenon targets. Events were selected with a range of energy exchange [nu] from 100 GeV to 500 GeV and with large ranges of [ital Q][sup 2] and [ital x][sub Bj]: 0.1 GeV[sup 2]/[ital c][sup 2][lt][ital Q][sup 2][lt]150 GeV[sup 2]/[ital c][sup 2] and 0.001[lt][ital x][sub Bj][lt]0.5. The fractional energy ([ital z]) distributions of forward-produced hadrons from the two targets have been compared as a function of the kinematics of the scattering; specifically, the kinematic region of shadowing'' has been compared to that of nonshadowing. The dependence of the distributions upon the [ital order] of the hadrons, determined by the fractional energies, has been examined as well; a strong degree of similarity has been observed in the shapes of the distributions of the different order hadrons. These [ital z] distributions, however, show no nuclear dependence, even in the kinematic region of shadowing.

Abstract

The average squared transverse energy of jets in deep-inelastic muon-nucleon scattering is measured as a function of the momentum transfer squared ([ital Q][sup 2]), in the range 3[lt][ital Q][sup 2][lt]25 GeV[sup 2]. Perturbative QCD predicts that the average squared parton transverse energy will depend upon the strong coupling constant ([alpha][sub [ital S]]). Identifying the transverse energy of the jets with those of the corresponding partons, [alpha][sub [ital S]] is found to vary with [ital Q][sup 2] as predicted by QCD.

Abstract

Results on forward charged hadrons in 490 GeV deep-inelastic muon scattering are presented. The transverse momenta, azimuthal asymmetry, and energy flow of events with four or more forward charged hadrons are studied. The range of the invariant hadronic mass squared 300[lt][ital W][sup 2][lt]900 GeV[sup 2]/[ital c][sup 4] extends higher than previous deep-inelastic muon scattering experiments. Data are compared to the predictions of the Lund Monte Carlo model with perturbative QCD simulated by matrix elements, parton showers, and color dipole radiation. All of the QCD-based models are consistent with the data while a model without QCD processes is not. Correlations with the multiplicity-independent event variable [Pi][congruent][summation][vert bar][ital p][sub [ital T]][vert bar] are studied. The relationship between the azimuthal asymmetry and transverse momentum of forward hadrons is also presented. The data are most consistent with intrinsic parton transverse momentum squared [ital k][sub [ital T]][sup 2] of 0.25 GeV[sup 2]/[ital c][sup 2].

Abstract

The first measurements of forward multijet rates in deep-inelastic lepton scattering are presented. Data were taken with a 490-GeV muon beam incident on a hydrogen target. The jets were defined using the GADE algorithm. The measured rates are presented as a function of the jet resolution parameter {ital y}{sub cut}, and as a function of the virtual-photon--proton center-of-momentum energy {ital W}, in the range 13{le}{ital W}{le}33 GeV. Comparisons are made to the predictions of the Lund Monte Carlo programs and good agreement is obtained when QCD corrections are included in the model.

Abstract

The new detector for data recording by the CLEO collaboration at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring is described. This detector has been designed to optimize studying e+ e− annihilation into hadronic matter at a total energy of 10 GeV. It consists of high precesion charged particle tracking chambers and an electromagnetic calorimeter together with systems for particle identification. The design of the detector and its performance over the first year and a half of operation are presented.

Abstract

The spin alignment of ${D}^{*+}$ mesons produced in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}=10.5$ GeV is obtained from a study of the angular distribution of the decay ${D}^{*+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$. The alignment is studied as a function of momentum and compared to theoretical predictions. We find an average value of the spin alignment parameter $\ensuremath{\eta}$ of $〈\ensuremath{\eta}〉=0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01$. We obtain a model-dependent measurement of the probability of producing a vector particle $〈{P}_{V}〉=0.77\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01$ for $D$ mesons.

Abstract

We report results on inclusive production of the charmed baryon ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ from ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}=10.5$ GeV. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section times branching fraction for the continuum production of ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ as observed in six different decay modes, and of a new, improved value of the ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ mass. The inclusive cross section times the branching fraction into $p{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ is measured to be 10.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5 pb summed over all ${x}_{p}$. The branching fractions of ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ into $p{\overline{K}}^{0}$, $p{\overline{K}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{K}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ relative to that into $p{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ are measured to be 0.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05, 0.43\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04, 0.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03, 0.65\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12, and 0.15\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03, respectively. The ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ mass is measured to be 2284.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$. The measured momentum distributions for continuum production of ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ are compared to analytical fragmentation functions and to other measurements.

Abstract

We report new measurements of the branching fractions {ital B}({ital B}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital D}{sup 0}{ital l{minus}}{bar {nu}}), {ital B}({ital {bar B}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital D}{sup +}{ital l{minus}}{bar {nu}}), and {ital B}({ital B}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital D}{sup *0}{ital l{minus}}{bar {nu}}). Combining these results with our previous measurement of {ital B}({ital {bar B}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital D}{sup *+}{ital l{minus}}{bar {nu}}), we find that the ratio of semileptonic widths for final states with a vector meson and pseudoscalar meson is (2.6{sub {minus}0.6{minus}0.8}{sup +1.1+1.0}) and the ratio of charged- to neutral-{ital B}-meson lifetimes is (0.89{plus minus}0.19{plus minus}0.13)({ital f}{sub 00}/{ital f}{sub +{minus}}) where ({ital f}{sub 00}/{ital f}{sub +{minus}}) is the ratio of neutral- to charged-{ital B}-meson production at the {Upsilon}(4{ital S}). From the {ital {bar B}}{r arrow}{ital Dl}{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}} branching fraction, we calculate {vert bar}{ital V}{sub {ital c}{ital b}}{vert bar}=0.040{plus minus}0.006 {plus minus}0.006, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic and dominated by the uncertainty in the {ital B}-meson lifetime.

Abstract

We report on the observation of ψ mesons from Υ(4S) decays which are too energetic to come from B mesons. These events provide the first evidence for non-BB¯ decays of the Υ(4S). The measured rate is B[Υ(4s)→ψX]=(0.22±0.06±0.04)% for ψ momentum above 2 GeV/c.

Abstract

We have studied the production of ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}$ mesons in the decays of B mesons at the \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S) resonance. We report on the first observation of exclusive B-meson decays B-g${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+}$, B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{+}$, and B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{0}$. We also present a new measurement of the branching ratio and the momentum spectrum for the inclusive decay B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}$X.

Abstract

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the {Upsilon}(1{ital S}) resonance. We have considered decays into final states of the form {Upsilon}{r arrow}{gamma}{ital n}({ital h}{sup +}{ital h}{sup {minus}}), with ({ital h}{sup +}{ital h}{sup {minus}}) denoting a charged-hadron pair (either {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}},{ital K}{sup +}{ital K}{sup {minus}}, or {ital p{bar p}}), and {ital n} denoting the number of such pairs in the event. We measure branching ratios for {ital n}=2, 3, and 4, and search for structure in the recoiling hadronic system. For the {ital n}=1 case, we present upper limits. No evidence is observed for two-body radiative decays of the {Upsilon}(1{ital S}) meson in any of the above channels.

We observe a D**0 state at mass 2461±3±1 MeV/c2 and width 20-12-10+9+9 MeV/c2 decaying to D+-. We also see an enhancement in the m(D*+-)-m(D*+) mass-difference spectrum and by examining D*+ decay-angle dependence, we see structure consistent with two states decaying to D*+-. We observe a lower-mass state, at mass (2428±3±2) MeV/c2 and width (23-6-4+8+10) MeV/c2, assuming that the higher-mass component is from the decay D**0(2461)D*+-. We present arguments for the spin-parity assignments of these states. We also report observation of candidate L=1 cs» state decaying to D*+Ks0. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report the first evidence of charmless semileptonic decays of {ital B} mesons. In the momentum interval 2.4--2.6 GeV/{ital c} where the background from {ital b}{r arrow}{ital cl}{nu} is negligible, the average of the measured {ital b}{r arrow}{ital ue}{nu} and {ital b}{r arrow}{ital u}{mu}{nu} partial branching ratios is {Delta}{ital B}{sub {ital ub}}(2.4,2.6) =(1.8{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.3){times}10{sup {minus}4}. Inclusion of data from the interval 2.2--2.4 GeV/{ital c}, where the lepton yield is dominated by {ital b}{r arrow}{ital cl}{nu}, gives {Delta}{ital B}{sub {ital ub}}(2.2,2.6) =(3.3{plus minus}0.8{plus minus}0.8){times}10{sup {minus}4}. {vert bar}{ital V}{sub {ital ub}}/V{sub cb}{vert bar} depends on the theoretical model of {ital b}{r arrow}{ital ul}{nu} decay and is approximately 0.1.

Abstract

Results on the production of charged hadrons in muon-deuteron and muon-xenon interactions are presented. The data were taken with the E665 spectrometer, which was exposed to the 490 GeV muon beam of the Tevatron at Fermilab. The use of a streamer chamber as vertex detector provides nearly 4π acceptance for charged particles. The μD data are compared with the μXe data in terms of multiplicity distributions, average multiplicities, forward-backward multiplicity correlations, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions and of two-particle rapidity correlations of charged hadrons. The data cover a range of invariant hadronic masses W from 8 to 30 GeV. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

We report new measurements of semileptonic branching fractions of $B$ mesons produced at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance determined by fitting the inclusive electron and muon momentum spectra to different theoretical models. Using $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})$ to denote the average of the semileptonic branching fractions for $B$ decay to electrons and muons, we obtain $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(10.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)%$ using the refined free-quark model of Altarelli et al., and $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(11.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)%$ using a modified version of the form-factor model of Isgur et al., in which the ${D}^{**}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ contribution is allowed to float in the fit. The average of these two results is $B(\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(10.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)%$, where the errors are statistical, systematic uncertainties in the measurement, and systematic uncertainties associated with the theoretical models, respectively. Semileptonic branching fractions as low as this are difficult to accommodate in theoretical models where hadronic $B$-meson decays arise only from spectator diagrams. We use dilepton yields to limit the uncertainty in the semileptonic branching fraction due to the possible existence of non-$B\overline{B}$ decays of the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$. In addition, we tag neutral $B$ mesons using the decays ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{*+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ to obtain the first direct measurement of semileptonic branching fractions for neutral $B$ mesons; the average of the electron and muon results for neutral $B$ mesons is $B({\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}})=(9.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}3.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.9)%$.

Abstract

We have studied hadronic decays of {ital B} mesons. We report measurements of exclusive branching ratios of several charm decay modes of {ital B} mesons to final states with a {ital D} or {ital D}{sup *} and one to three charged pions or a charged {rho} and to final states with a {psi} or {psi}{prime}, a kaon, and up to two charged pions. We have also measured inclusive branching ratios for {ital B} decays to {ital D} and {ital D}{sup *} and the spectra of these particles in {ital B} decays. The total charm content in {ital B} decay is found to be (101{plus minus}12)%. The branching ratios and spectra are compared to form-factor models. We extract the parameters {ital a}{sub 1} and {ital a}{sub 2} of the model of Bauer, Stech, and Wirbel and the {ital D}{sub {ital S}} decay constant. The masses of the {ital {bar B}} {sup 0} and {ital B}{sup {minus}} mesons are measured. The mass difference between {ital {bar B}} {sup 0} and {ital B}{sup {minus}} is found to be {minus}0.4{plus minus}0.6{plus minus}0.5 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2}.

Abstract

The charged multiplicity has been measured at the UPSILON(4S) and a value of 5.75 +- 0.1 +- 0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt letpons from B decay, the values 4.1 +- 0.35 +- 0.2 and 6.3 +- 0.2 +- 0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b..-->..c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.

Abstract

If the tau lepton couples to the charged weak current with universal strength, its lifetime can be expressed in terms of the muon's lifetime, the ratio of the masses of the muon and the tau, and the tau's branching ratio into e anti nu/sub e/ nu/sub tau/ as tau/sub tau/ = tau/sub ..mu../ (m/sub ..mu..//m/sub tau/)/sup 5/ B(tau ..-->.. e anti nu/sub e/nu/sub tau/) = 2.8 +- 0.2 x 10/sup -13/ s. This paper describes the measurement of the tau lifetime made by the Mark II collaboration, using a new high precision drift chamber in contunction with the Mark II detector at PEP. The results of other tau lifetime measurements are summarized.

Abstract

Limits are set on B/sup 0/B-bar/sup 0/ mixing by use of dilepton events from UPSILON(4S) decay. On the assumption that the charged- and neutral-B semileptonic branching ratios are equal and that 41% of the B mesons from the UPSILON(4S) are neutral, a 90%-confidence-level upper limit of 24% is set on B/sup 0/B-bar/sup 0/ mixing. Limits are also given for the ratio of the lifetimes of neutral and charged B mesons. The 90%-confidence-level limits are 0.44

Abstract

From a sample of 332 000 BB-bar pairs produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at the UPSILON(4S) resonance we derive upper limits for the branching fractions for the decays B/sup -/..-->..pp-bar..pi../sup -/ and B-bar/sup 0/..-->..pp-bar..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ in several final-state momentum configurations. The results do not confirm recently reported observations of charmless B decays.

The branching fraction for the decay of the UPSILON(1S) into tau pairs has been measured to be 3.4 +- 0.4 +- 0.4%. This result agrees with the previously measured branching ratio of the decay into muon pairs.

Abstract

We report measurements of the electroproduction of phi mesons from hydrogen at Q/sup 2/ values of 0.23, 0.43, and 0.97 GeV/sup 2/ with t varying from 0.125 to 1.3 GeV/sup 2/ at each Q/sup 2/ point. The data show no evidence for a Q/sup 2/ dependence of the slope of the t distribution; the forward cross section falls with increasing Q/sup 2/ as the square of the phi propagator; the decay angular distributions agree with the predictions of s-channel helicity conservation; and the ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse component increases linearly with Q/sup 2/.

Abstract

We have studied muon-produced hadrons from a deuterium target. The structure functions and the charge ratios are reported for neutrons; the transverse momentum and azimuthal distributions are reported for deuterons. The structure function for the neutron is similar to that of the proton. The charge ratio of produced hadrons follows the expectation of a simple spin-1/2 quark model. Transverse-momentum results agree with those at lower energy and are similar to those from hadron--hadron interactions. No azimuthal anisotropy is seen. (AIP)

Abstract

The properties of the transverse momenta and angular distributions of hadrons produced in muon-proton scattering with first-order quantum-chromodynamics calculations. The quantum-chromodynamics prediction for the Q/sup 2/ dependence of the average hadron transverse momentum squared agrees with the data provided a constant term is added in quadrature to the prediction. This additive term is attributed to the intrinsic transverse momentum of the quarks in the nucleon and to the transverse momentum inherent in quark fragmentation.

Abstract

Inclusive hadron production in muon-proton inelastic scattering has been measured for ${q}^{2}g0.5$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$ and $10l\ensuremath{\nu}l135$ GeV. The results are presented in the form of the transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons and the hadron invariant structure function $F({x}^{\ensuremath{'}})$. Results are given for different regions of ${q}^{2}$ and $s$.

Measurements of the inclusive pion electroproduction reaction e − +p → e − + π ± +X made at the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory are reported. Data were taken at points with nominal ( Q 2 , W ) values of (0.6, 2.67), (1.2, 2.67), (2.0, 2.67) and (1.2, 2.15) in (GeV 2 , GeV). A more complete angular distribution was taken at (1.2, 2.67). The virtual photoproduction cross section for π + + missing mass is studied as a function of missing mass, Feynman scaling variables, Q 2 and W . The invariant cross section show a simple behavior as a function of Q 2 and W . Its dependenc on P ⊥ 2 , x ′ and φ is determined.

Three narrow resonances have been observed in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadrons at total energies between 9.4 and 10.4 GeV. Measurements of mass spacings and ratios of lepton pair widths support the interpretation of these ''UPSILON'' states as the lowest triplet-S levels of the bb-bar quark-antiquark system.

Abstract

We have measured B/sup 0/B-bar/sup 0/ mixing by observing like-sign dilepton events in UPSILON(4S) decay. Assuming that the semileptonic branching fractions of the charged and neutral B mesons are equal and that the UPSILON(4S) decays to B/sup +/B/sup -/ 55% of the time and to B/sup 0/B-bar/sup 0/ 45% of the time, we measure the mixing parameter r to be 0.19 +- 0.06 +- 0.06, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

We consider three broad classes of nonstandard models for b quark decay: (1) b → llq with charged or neutral leptons of arbitrary flavor; (2) b → l q q ; and (3) b → qa − where a − is a Higgs boson or hyperpion. For these classes of models we have calculated the charged energy fraction and the inclusive yields of electrons, muons, protons, and lambdas. We demonstrate that these model predictions are inconsistent with CLEO measurements at the γ (4S).

Abstract

From a data sample of 242 000 BB\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} pairs collected with the CLEO detector at the \ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S) resonance, we set upper limits for the branching ratios for exclusive hadronic decays of B mesons arising from b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}u transitions. Model-dependent limits for the ratio of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements ${V}_{\mathrm{ub}}$/${V}_{\mathrm{cb}}$ are presented.

Abstract

This paper reports measurements of the hadrons produced in the inelastic scattering of 147-GeV muons by protons and deuterons in an experiment carried out at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Both the scattered muon and the hadrons were measured in a large spectrometer. Properties of the hadron spectra are presented for proton, deuteron, and neutron targets and compared with theoretical models and with hadron spectra from related processes. Emphasis is placed on the quark-parton model and the data are found to be in substantial agreement with it. The average transverse momentum of the hadrons with respect to the virtual photon direction shows no dependence on the muon scattering variables. The data display "jet behavior" of the inclusive hadrons comparable to that found in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, the authors have measured the leptonic branching fraction, B/sub mumu/, of the UPSILON(1S), UPSILON(2S), and UPSILON(3S) to be 2.7 +- 0.3 +- 0.3%, 1.9 +- 1.3 +- 0.5%, and 3.3 +- 1.3 +- 0.7%, respectively. Combining these values of B/sub mumu/ with previous measurements of the leptonic widths of these resonances, the authors find the total width of the UPSILON(1S), UPSILON(2S), and UPSILON(3S) to be 48 +- 4 +- 4, 27 +- 17 +- 6, and 13 +- 4 +- 3 keV.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector, we have measured the branching ratios for the exclusive decays of the D s + meson into K ∗0 K + , K 0 K + , and K ∗+ K 0 relative to the decay D s + →φπ + to be close to unity. We have also measured the mass diference between the D s + and D + meson to be 98.5±1.5 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

We report measurements of the electroproduction of phi mesons from hydrogen at Q/sup 2/ values of 0.23, 0.43, and 0.97 GeV/sup 2/ with vertical-bartvertical-bar varying from 0.125 to 1.3 GeV/sup 2/ at each Q/sup 2/ point. The data show no evidence for a Q/sup 2/ dependence of the slope of the t distribution, the forward cross section falls with increasing Q/sup 2/ as the square of the phi propagator, the decay angular distributions agree with the predictions of s-channel helicity conservation, and the ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse component increases linearly with Q/sup 2/.
