20. Yüzyılın en önemli roman teorisyenlerinden olan Mihail Bahtin, Dostoyevski'nin romanlarından yola çıkarak modern romanda yapının ne şekilde değiştiğine dair önemli fikirler yürütmüştür. Bahtin'in karnaval anlatılarından yola çıkarak, romanın çoklu yapısına göndermede bulunduğu fikri, 19.yüzyıl romanından başlayarak günümüze değin etkili olan bir görüştür. Bahtin romanların tıpkı karnavallar gibi çok yapı ve söylemden oluştuğunu ve metni zenginleştirerek, geleneksel anlatılardan koptuğunu söyler. Onun romana getirdiği en önemli katkı `diyaloji` fikridir. Diyalog kelimesinden türetilerek ortaya çıkan diyaloji, romanda birbiri ile ilişkili hikâyelerin gelişimini ifade etmektedir. Orhan Pamuk'un `Beyaz Kale` romanın gelenek ile modernlik, doğu ile batı ve birçok meseleyi ele alması, romanın çoklu yapısında diyalojik ilişkilerin varlığını göstermektedir. Çalışmada Orhan Pamuk'un `Beyaz Kale` romanı incelenecek ve romanda diyalojik ilişkiler tespit edilerek romanın zenginliğine ne şekilde katkıda bulunduğu gösterilecektir. Mihail Bahtin, one of the most important novel theoreticians of the 19th century, has made important ideas about how Dostoevsky's work has changed from the novels to the modern roman. The idea that Bahtin is sent to the multiple structure of the novel by getting out of carnival tales is a day-to-day effective starting from the 19th century novel.It tells that the baht novels consist of many structures and discourses, just like carnivals, and enrich the text and break away from traditional accounts. The most important contribution he brings to the novel is the idea of `dialogue`. The dialogue, derived from the dialectic language, expresses the development of related stories in romance.The study of Orhan Pamuk's `White Castle` novel with tradition, modernity, eastern and western and many other issues, shows the existence of dialogic relations in the multiple structure of the novel. Bu çalışmanın amacı Oksidentalizm söylemini sosyal ve sanatsal boyutlarıyla birlikte Orhan Pamuk ve Salman Rushdie?nin eserleri bağlamında tanımlamaktır. Floransa Büyücüsü ve Beyaz Kaleromanları bu çalışmanın odağını teşkil etmektedir. Oksidentalizm söylemi çeşitli içerimleriyle birlikte bu romanlarda izlenmektedir. Çalışmada, romanlarda yeralan efendi-köle, Doğu-Batı, bilim-din gibi ikili karşıtlıkların Avrupa ve Asya arasında varolduğu düşünülen kültürel sınırların keyfiliği nedeniyle geçersiz kurgular oldukları önerilmektedir. Ayrıca böylesi ikiliklerin eşzamanlı olarak Batı kültürünü reddeden ve kucaklayan Oksidentalizm söyleminin muğlaklığı nedeniyle kendi anlamlarını bulanıklaştırdıkları iddia edilmektedir. Bu iki romanın Oksidentalist imgelem ve karakterizasyon bağlamında post-koloniyel bir analizi yapıldıktan sonra, söylemin melezliği ve bunun Batı temsillerindeki yansımaları tartışılmaktadır. Son olarak, kişisel/kültürel bir farklılaşma süreci ve kültürel betimlemelerdeki tektipliğin antitezi olarak kültürlenme süreci, genel olarak Oksidentalizm, özel olarak da bahsedilen iki roman bağlamında tanımlanmaktadır. The purpose of this study is to identify the discourse of Occidentalism with its social and artistic aspects within the works of Salman Rushdie and Orhan Pamuk. Enchantress of Florence and The White Castle constitute the focus of the study. The discourse of Occidentalism with its various implications has been traced in these works. Here, it is proposed that the binary oppositions in the novels, such as master-slave, East-West, science-religion are shown to be hollow due to the contingency of cultural borders which are thought to be existing between Europe and Asia. Furthermore, such oppositions are destined to cancel them out because of the ambiguous nature of the Occidentalism discourse that simultaneously contests and celebrates the Western culture. After a postcolonial analysis of the two novels in the context of Occidentalist imagery and characterization, hybridity of the discourse and its reflections in representations of the West in the novels are discussed. Finally, acculturation as a personal/cultural process of becoming different and as signifying the end of fixity in terms of cultural representations is defined in relation to Occidentalism in general and to these two novels in particular.Keywords: Occidentalism, hybridity, acculturation, cultural difference, representation, Westernism, novel, discourse, identity. 80

Orhan Pamuk'un üçüncü romanı Beyaz Kale (1985), yazarının ?zor okunur? ve ?anlaşılmaz? sıfatlarıyla anılmakta ünlü romanlarının da ilkidir. Okuduğu kitaplarda sabit anlam arayan konvansiyonel okurlara ait bu iki geri bildirim, hem Türkiye'de hem de Türkiye dışında, Beyaz Kale'nin edebiyatsever okur düzleminde alımlanmasında öne çıkmıştır. Ancak bu kitap, sabit bir anlam iletmek değil yapısını yazdıklarıyla göstererek birbirinden farklı şekillerde alımlanmak ve anlamlandırılmak isteyen edebî bir yapıttır. Beyaz Kale'yi, ?ne anlatmak? değil ?nasıl anlatmak? ve ?neyi var etmek? çerçevesinde aktif bir okumayla irdeleyen bu tez, üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. İlk bölüm, Beyaz Kale'de yapının yazıyı içlediğini ve okurun bu yapının bir parçası olduğunu gösterir. İkinci bölüm, Beyaz Kale'de narstistik anlatı dinamiklerini açığa çıkarır ve bu dolayımda kitabın, yapısı ve yazısı hakkında, okurunu nasıl ?bilinçlendirdiğine? odaklanır. Üçüncü bölüm, okurun yaratıcılık edimiyle Beyaz Kale'nin arketip yolculuğuna nasıl katıldığını ele alır. These two pieces of feedback from conventional readers looking for a fixed meaning in the text has been given precedence in reception of The White Castle, on the plane of plain readers within and outside Turkey. This book, however, is not a literary work aiming to transmit a fixed meaning but wishing to be received and signified in different ways by displaying its structure with its ecriture. This thesis, which scrutinizes The White Castle less from the perspective of ?what to tell? than that of ?how to tell? and ?what to create? by an active reading, consists of three chapters. The first chapter depicts that in The White Castle the structure encompasses the ecriture and that the reader is a part of this structure. The second chapter reveals the narcissistic dynamics of The White Castle and thereby focuses on how the book ?gives awareness? to its reader about its structure and ecriture. The third chapter investigates how the reader joins the archetypal journey of The White Castle. Finally, this thesis attests that The White Castle is a self-reflexive structure, and that the ?beloved reader? who becomes aware of its essence activates it into a being.Keywords: structure, beloved reader, archetypal journey, narcissistic narrative 134

160 ZUSAMMENFASSUNG (Türkisch) Bu çalışma, karşılaştırma yoluyla komparatistik alanında oluşan bir yöntemsel daralmayı tartışmaktadır. Bu daralma kendini bir yetersizlik olarak ortaya koymaktadır. Söz konusu yetersizlik, izlenilen karşılaştırma yolunun yazınsal bir yapıtın alımlamasında tek bir yöntem; yani alımlama yöntemi olarak ele alınmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Yazın yapıtlarının bilimsel alımlanımı birçok alımlama yönteminden faydalanmaktadır. Yazın bilimi, bu yöntemsel yaklaşımı yazınsal metnin kendi iç örgüsünden belirleyerek gerektiğinde ard arda, yan yana ya da içice olarak kullanmaktadır. Bu çalışma yazınsal bir çalışma alanı olarak komparatistik yaklaşımın olanaklarını ve sınırlarını örneklendirmen olarak göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın bilimsel nesnesini başlıkta anılan iki yazın metninin karşılaştırmalı edebiyat bilimi çerçevesinde irdelenmesi oluşturmaktadır. iki yapıtın karşılaştırılabilirliği iki metin arasındaki bir ilişki (Relation) ile olanaklıdır. Söz konusu ilişki, bu çalışma161 içinde karşılaştırma ölçütleri olarak adlandırılmıştır. Bu ölçütler iki yazın yapıtının içsel örgülerinden belirlenen bazı metin içi ve metin dışı öğeler olarak saptanmıştır. Metin dışı ölçütler, karşılaştırmayı olanaklı kılan ve çalışmanın başlarında ve süresince kesinleşen önemli güdüleyici yapılardır. Karşılaştırmayı olanaklı kılan bu ölçütler metin içi bir incelemeyi gerektirir. Böylelikle bunlar metin içi ölçütleri ortaya çıkarmışlardır. Metin içi ölçütler çalışma izleği içinde, birbiri içinden çıkmış ve bir diğerini gerektirmiştir. Çalışmanın başlarında iki yazın yapıtının epik türlerine ilişkin ortaya atılan varsayımlar uygulama bölümünün sunduğu veriler ile desteklenmiş ve olgunlaştarı İmiş tır. Sonuç olarak iki yazın metninin ayrı epik türler olduğu ve ayrı incelenmesi gerektiği ortaya çıkmıştır. Böylece edebiyatbil imsel bir nesne olarak her iki yapıtın öncelikle sistematik edebiyat bilimi çerçevesinde açımlanabilmesinin koşulları yaratılmıştır. Çalışmadaki162 bir başka sonuç, bu tür bir yazınsal irdelemede salt karşılaştırma yönteminin yeterli olamayacağını ve yöntem çoğulculuğuna yönelinmesinin gerekliliğinin görülmesi olmuştur. 163 SUMMARY The present study discusses a major methodological inefficiency in the field comparative literature studies by conducting a sample comparative analysis on two prose texts. It is indicated in this study that this major inefficiency arises from the nature of the method of comparison which has been taken as the only way of analyzing reception of a literary work. The study of the reception of literary works exploits a number of methods of reception proposed in other similar disciplines. Depending on the textual structure of a particular work of literature, studies on reception makes use of these methods in the analysis at different points and in different manners; at some point the analysis may apply these methods successively or interactively. This study will try to show the limits and possibilities of comparative method in literary analysis by presenting a thorough analysis on sample prose texts. The sample prose texts qualify as examplars to the extent that their internal textual organization and their larger contextual properties establish a reliable foundations for a comparative study. The features of both internal textual164 organization and larger textual contexts provided by the sample texts are defined as the comparative criteria for the analysis. These criteria further defined under two broad headings as internal and external which again ultimately closely related to the textual structure. External criteria were the starting point of the study in that the similarities between sample texts formed the basis of comparison. These criteria further helped to determine the analytical comparative tools that will apply in the study of internal organization of textual structure. As for the internal criteria, as the study proceeded a number of other criteria emerged, each requiring the presence of another. The study hypothesized that the sample prose texts display an epic quality with different internal organization and format. The analysis of the data and the conclusions drawn validated the hypotheses set previously. Ultimately, it became clear that though both texts share a number of common features, they should be considered as two different types of epic texts within the general notion of epic in literary analysis. Finally, the study concluded on the basis of comparative study conducted on sample prose texts that comparative165 approach, displays a major inefficiency in understanding and evaluating a work of literature. Valid analysis and evaluation of the sample texts is left to a further systematic literary study. It appears that comparative approach itself is not sufficient enough in analyzing literary work and should be supported with other methods in any application on a text. 178

ÖZET Edebi eserler ve özellikle roman ve benzeri çalışmalar çağımızda iletişim ve kültürlerarası yakınlaşma açısından büyük önem taşımaktadır. Türk yazarlarının romanlarının çevirisi yoluyla Türk kültürü ve edebiyatı farklı kültürlere ve dillere taşınmaktadır. Ne yazık ki Türkçe'den diğer dillere yapılan edebi çeviri sayısı çok fazla değildir. Bu tezin kapsamında ünlü Türk yazar Orhan Pamuk'un Beyaz Kale ve Yeni Hayat isimli romanlarının Victoria Holbrook ve Güneli Gün tarafından İngilizce'ye çevirilerinde kültürel öğelerin aktarımlarında kullanılan çeviri yöntemleri incelenmiştir. Kültürel öğelerin çevirilerinde kullanılan yöntemleri incelemeye geçmeden önce tezin giriş bölümünde edebi çeviri, kültür ve dil ilişkisi, ve kültür ve edebi çeviri ilişkisine değinilmiştir. Bunu takiben Orhan Pamuk hakkında bilgi ve eserlerin özetleri verilmiştir. Bu genel bilgilerden sonra tezin analiz bölümünde ilk olarak birinci bölümde belirtilen kültür tanımı çerçevesinde, kültürel öğelerin kategorileri verilmiştir. İkinci olarak eserlerden örneklenecek olan kültürel öğelerin çevirilerinde kullanılan çeviri yöntemleri açıklanmıştır. Analiz bölümünde eserlerden alınan örnekler ve çevirilerinde kullanılan yöntemlerin açıklaması verilmiştir. Tezin son bölümünde giriş bölümünde değinilen edebi çeviri, kültür ve dil ilişkileri bağlamında, analiz bölümünden örneklerin de yardımıyla iki değişik değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Birincisi, sayısal bir değerlendirme olup, tablo ile sunulmuştur. Kullanılan çeviri yöntemlerinin kültürel kategorilere göre kullanım sıklığı gösterilmiştir. İkinci olarak bu veriler değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmayla Türkçe'den İngilizce'ye çevrilen eserlerde kültürel öğelerin çevirilerinde kullanılabilecek olan yöntemler ve seçenekler belirlenmiştir. Çalışma örneklerle desteklenmiştir ve böylece gerek çeviriIll eğitimine, gerekse ileride yapılacak olan Türkçe'den İngilizce'ye çevirilerde bir rehber olarak kullanılma olasılığı vardır. ABSTRACT Literary works and particularly novels and similar genres of literature have an important place in terms of communication and cultural proximity in our age. The Turkish culture and literature are transferred to other cultures and languages through the translations of novels of Turkish authors. Unfortunately the number of literary works translated from Turkish into other languages is not numerous. Within the scope of this thesis, the translation procedures used by Victoria Holbrook and Güneli Gün in the translations from Turkish into English of the cultural features present in the novels White Castle and New Life, written by acclaimed Turkish author Orhan Pamuk, are studied. To be able to study the procedures used in the translation of cultural features in the introductory part of the study literary translation, culture- language relations, and culture-literary translation relations have been explained. This is followed by information about Orhan Pamuk and the summaries of the two novels. After this general information, in the analysis part of the thesis firstly the cultural feature categories are given within the framework of the definition of culture given in the introduction part. Secondly the translation procedures used in the translations of cultural features from the novels which are to be exampled are given. In the analysis part the examples and the procedures used in their translations have been explained. In the conclusion part of the thesis two different evaluations have been made within the context of the concepts of literary translation, culture- language relation which had been explained in the introduction and with the help of the examples given in the analysis part. The first evaluation is quantitative and presented with a chart. In this chart the frequency of thetranslation procedures used for the translation of the cultural categories have been indicated. The second evaluation is an analysis of this data. In this study the procedures and the choices which can be used in the translation of cultural features in the works to be translated from Turkish into English are determined. This study is supported by the examples and thus may be used in the future translations to be made from Turkish into English, or it may be used for the students of translation as a guideline. 106
