Due to the rapid growth of electricity demand and the absence of regulations, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from coal-fired power plants in India have increased notably in the past decade. In this study, we present the first interannual comparison of SO2 emissions and the satellite SO2 observations from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) for Indian coal-fired power plants during the OMI era of 2005-2012. A detailed unit-based inventory is developed for the Indian coal-fired power sector, and results show that its SO2 emissions increased dramatically by 71% during 2005-2012. Using the oversampling technique, yearly high-resolution OMI maps for the whole domain of India are created, and they reveal a continuous increase in SO2 columns over India. Power plant regions with annual SO2 emissions greater than 50 Gg year(-1) produce statistically significant OMI signals, and a high correlation (R = 0.93) is found between SO2 emissions and OMI-observed SO2 burdens. Contrary to the decreasing trend of national mean SO2 concentrations reported by the Indian Government, both the total OMI-observed SO2 and annual average SO2 concentrations in coal-fired power plant regions increased by >60% during 2005-2012, implying the air quality monitoring network needs to be optimized to reflect the true SO2 situation in India.

This paper examines Beijing air quality in the winter and summer of 2001 using an integrated air quality modeling system (Fifth Generation Mesoscale Meteorological Model [MM5]/Community Multiscale Air Quality [CMAQ]) in nested mode. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) emission inventory is used in the 36- (East Asia), 12- (East China), and 4-km (greater Beijing area) domains. Furthermore, we develop a local Beijing emission inventory that is used in the 4-km domain. We also construct a corroborated mapping of chemical species between the TRACE-P inventory and the Carbon Bond IV (CB-IV) chemical mechanism before the integrated modeling system is applied to study ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM) in Beijing. Meteorological data for the integrated modeling runs are extracted from MM5. Model results show O3 hourly concentrations in the range of 80-159 parts per billion (ppb) during summer in the urban areas and up to 189 ppb downwind of the city. High fine PM (PM2.5) concentrations (monthly average of 75 microg x m(-3) in summer and 150 microg x m(-3) in winter) are simulated over the metropolitan and down-wind areas with significant secondary constituents. A comparison against available O3 and PM measurement data in Beijing is described. We recommend refinements to the developed local Beijing emission inventory to improve the simulation of Beijing's air quality. The 4-km modeling configuration is also recommended for the development of air pollution control strategies.

Based on the TRACE-P emission data and a Shanghai local emission inventory, the regional air quality model Models-3/CMAQ was applied with the mesoscale model MM5 to simulate the distribution and transport status of O3 and PM10 in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) in January and July 2001. Ten days' hourly monitoring data at Shanghai monitoring sites were used to verify the model performance. Results show that the correlation coefficients between monitoring and simulation data of O3 and PM10 are 0.77 and 0.52, and the indices of agreement reach 0.81 and 0.99, respectively. The Models-3 simulation shows a 27% underestimation of the maximum O3 hourly concentration, but performs well in average O3 hourly concentration simulation with a normalized bias of -3.1%. The model shows a 10% underestimation of the average PM10 hourly concentration, with a normalized bias of 46%. Models-3/CMAQ has the ability to simulate the processes of air pollution transport in the YRD, and the model results are acceptable. Among the 16 major cities of the YRD, the maximum O3 hourly concentrations in 14 cities exceed the class II Chinese National Ambient Air Quality Standard (CNAAQS). The high O3 concentration area covers most of the south Jiangsu and north Zhejiang Province. Influenced by local emissions and northerly air pollution transport, the daily average concentrations in Taizhou, Yangzhou, Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Changzhou cities during January of 2001 exceed the Class II national standard. Air pollution transport and chemical transformation are quite obvious in the YRD. In summer, under strong radiation conditions, the air pollutants emitted from southern cities usually impose a negative impact on the downwind cities, due to secondary pollution formation; while under weak radiation conditions, the pollutants impact the surrounding area with primary pollution. In winter, the particle pollution level in the YRD is relatively high, which is closely related to the transportation of particulates from the north area to the YRD. The air pollution in the YRD has developed as a regional problem, rather than just a local one.

Tropospheric O(3) and sulfate both contribute to air pollution and climate forcing. There is a growing realization that air quality and climate change issues are strongly connected. To date, the importance of the coupling between O(3) and sulfate has not been fully appreciated, and thus regulations treat each pollutant separately. We show that emissions of O(3) precursors can dramatically affect regional sulfate air quality and climate forcing. At 2030 in an A1B future, increased O(3) precursor emissions enhance surface sulfate over India and China by up to 20% because of increased levels of OH and gas-phase SO(2) oxidation rates and add up to 20% to the direct sulfate forcing for that region relative to the present day. Hence, O(3) precursors impose an indirect forcing via sulfate, which is more than twice the direct O(3) forcing itself (compare -0.61 vs. +0.35 W/m(2)). Regulatory policy should consider both air quality and climate and should address O(3) and sulfate simultaneously because of the strong interaction between these species.

This overview paper highlights the successes of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on board the Aura satellite spanning a period of nearly 14 years. Data from OMI has been used in a wide range of applications and research resulting in many new findings. Due to its unprecedented spatial resolution, in combination with daily global coverage, OMI plays a unique role in measuring trace gases important for the ozone layer, air quality, and climate change. With the operational very fast delivery (VFD; direct readout) and near real-time (NRT) availability of the data, OMI also plays an important role in the development of operational services in the atmospheric chemistry domain. This study investigates the relationship between ground-level ozone variability and synoptic weather conditions in the Chicago area in the summertime over the period 1990–2014. It shows that the occurrence of dry tropical (DT) weather conditions is most likely to lead to high ozone concentrations. Both the 95th percentile of summertime daily maximum 8-hour-average ozone concentrations and the number of days > 70 ppb are shown to have a greater and more significant correlation with DT weather in recent years (2004–2014) than in the preceding period (1990–2003), indicating an increased dependence of ozone on DT weather. The DT weather is shown to be associated with increased geopotential height, warmer temperature, and slower eastward wind at 500 hPa and also with warmer temperature and increased northward wind near the surface. The results have implications for the likely effect of future climate change on ozone as a result of modified synoptic weather conditions. More frequent episodes of high ozone concentrations can be expected, leading to worsened effects on public health and the environment. It will also make it increasingly challenging for Chicago to attain the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone, which has recently been tightened by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Abstract: China is taking major steps to improve Beijing''s air quality for the 2008 Olympic Games. However, concentrations of fine particulate matter and ozone in Beijing often exceed healthful levels in the summertime. Based on the US EPA''s Models-3/CMAQ model simulation over the Beijing region, we estimate that about 34% of PM2.5 on average and 35–60% of ozone during high ozone episodes at the Olympic Stadium site can be attributed to sources outside Beijing. Neighboring Hebei and Shandong Provinces and the Tianjin Municipality all exert significant influence on Beijing''s air quality. During sustained wind flow from the south, Hebei Province can contribute 50–70% of Beijing''s PM2.5 concentrations and 20–30% of ozone. Controlling only local sources in Beijing will not be sufficient to attain the air quality goal set for the Beijing Olympics. There is an urgent need for regional air quality management studies and new emission control strategies to ensure that the air quality goals for 2008 are met. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

An advanced modeling system with a “one-atmosphere” perspective, Models-3/Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system, driven by MM5/NCEP reanalysis data as the meteorology, and GEOS-Chem outputs as boundary values was applied to simulate the O3, and other gaseous pollutants (SO2 and NO2) evolution among other atmospheric chemicals for July 2001. Comparisons had been made with other models in the MICS-II exercise for the same period. Statistics of both monthly and daily means show that the model skill is very good in reproducing O3 and SO2 with small to moderate RMSE. The model species capture the day-to-day and spatial variability of the observations. The same O3 model concentrations that overpredict most of the EANET observations in the MICS-II study may have underpredicted ones from monitoring networks in Beijing area that is not included in this paper. Vertical O3 profiles at 4 ozonesonde sites are well predicted in July 2001. In fact, our model is among the best of those MICS-II models within the 2-km surface layer. The meteorology near surface and lower troposphere is well reproduced. Compared to SO2 and O3, the NO2 gas concentrations are simulated less well, but the correlation coefficient is still significant. The choice of reanalysis meteorological fields and different boundary conditions generated by different global models may result in diverse spatial patterns exhibited by MICS-II models and ours. Our spatial distributions of O3 shows a high concentration patch covering Beijing, a moderate to high pattern across Korea and Japan Sea, and a low but extensive pattern enclosing southern China, Taiwan, and East Sea. Extension of the pattern to southern China coincides with the existence of pollution problems in Guangdong and Taiwan, but overprediction of O3 over the region deserves further improvement by various factors. One of them can be the grid resolution to resolve the complex orography in or close to the ocean. Another factor can be the refinement of local land use data that changes the micro-meteorology in favor of more air pollution events. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and, subsequently, atmospheric levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) have decreased over the U.S. due to a combination of environmental policies and technological change. Consequently, NO 2 levels have decreased by 30–40% in the last decade. We quantify NO 2 trends (2005–2013) over the U.S. using surface measurements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Air Quality System (AQS) and an improved tropospheric NO 2 vertical column density (VCD) data product from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on the Aura satellite. We demonstrate that the current OMI NO 2 algorithm is of sufficient maturity to allow a favorable correspondence of trends and variations in OMI and AQS data. Our trend model accounts for the non-linear dependence of NO 2 concentration on emissions associated with the seasonal variation of the chemical lifetime, including the change in the amplitude of the seasonal cycle associated with the significant change in NO x emissions that occurred over the last decade. The direct relationship between observations and emissions becomes more robust when one accounts for these non-linear dependencies. We improve the OMI NO 2 standard retrieval algorithm and, subsequently, the data product by using monthly vertical concentration profiles, a required algorithm input, from a high-resolution chemistry and transport model (CTM) simulation with varying emissions (2005–2013). The impact of neglecting the time-dependence of the profiles leads to errors in trend estimation, particularly in regions where emissions have changed substantially. For example, trends calculated from retrievals based on time-dependent profiles offer 18% more instances of significant trends and up to 15% larger total NO 2 reduction versus the results based on profiles for 2005. Using a CTM, we explore the theoretical relation of the trends estimated from NO 2 VCDs to those estimated from ground-level concentrations. The model-simulated trends in VCDs strongly correlate with those estimated from surface concentrations ( r = 0.83, N = 355). We then explore the observed correspondence of trends estimated from OMI and AQS data. We find a significant, but slightly weaker, correspondence (i.e., r = 0.68, N = 208) than predicted by the model and discuss some of the important factors affecting the relationship, including known problems (e.g., NO z interferents) associated with the AQS data. This significant correspondence gives confidence in trend and surface concentration estimates from OMI VCDs for locations, such as the majority of the U.S. and globe, that are not covered by surface monitoring networks. Using our improved trend model and our enhanced OMI data product, we find that both OMI and AQS data show substantial downward trends from 2005 to 2013, with an average reduction of 38% for each over the U.S. The annual reduction rates inferred from OMI and AQS measurements are larger (−4.8 ± 1.9%/yr, −3.7 ± 1.5%/yr) from 2005 to 2008 than 2010 to 2013 (−1.2 ± 1.2%/yr, −2.1 ± 1.4%/yr). We quantify NO 2 trends for major U.S. cities and power plants; the latter suggest larger negative trend (−4.0 ± 1.5%/yr) between 2005 and 2008 and smaller or insignificant changes (−0.5 ± 1.2%/yr) during 2010–2013. Abstract: We show that Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) nitrogen dioxide (NO2) tropospheric column data may be used to assess changes of the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) from power plants in the United States, though careful interpretation of the data is necessary. There is a clear response for OMI NO2 data to NO x emission reductions from power plants associated with the implementation of mandated emission control devices (ECDs) over the OMI record (2005–2011). This response is scalar for all intents and purposes, whether the reduction is rapid or incremental over several years. However, it is variable among the power plants, even for those with the greatest absolute decrease in emissions. Abstract: Following model evaluation in part I, this part II paper focuses on the process analysis and chemical regime analysis for the formation of ozone (O3) and particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 10 μm (PM10) in China. The process analysis results show that horizontal transport is the main contributor to the accumulation of O3 in Jan., Apr., and Oct., and gas-phase chemistry and vertical transport contribute to the production and accumulation of O3 in Jul. Removal pathways of O3 include vertical and horizontal transport, gas-phase chemistry, and cloud processes, depending on locations and seasons. PM10 is mainly produced by primary emissions and aerosol processes and removed by horizontal transport. Cloud processes could either decrease or increase PM10 concentrations, depending on locations and seasons. Among all indicators examined, the ratio of provides the most robust indicator for O3 chemistry, indicating a VOC-limited O3 chemistry over most of the eastern China in Jan., NOx-limited in Jul., and either VOC- or NOx-limited in Apr. and Oct. O3 chemistry is NOx-limited in most central and western China and VOC-limited in major cities throughout the year. The adjusted gas ratio, AdjGR, indicates that PM formation in the eastern China is most sensitive to the emissions of SO2 and may be more sensitive to emission reductions in NOx than in NH3. These results are fairly consistent with the responses of O3 and PM2.5 to the reductions of their precursor emissions predicted from sensitivity simulations. A 50% reduction of NOx or AVOC emissions leads to a reduction of O3 over the eastern China. Unlike the reduction of emissions of SO2, NOx, and NH3 that leads to a decrease in PM10, a 50% reduction of AVOC emissions increases PM10 levels. Such results indicate the complexity of O3 and PM chemistry and a need for an integrated, region-specific emission control strategy with seasonal variations to effectively control both O3 and PM2.5 pollution in China. We use a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) with 1°×1° horizontal resolution to quantify the effects of anthropogenic emissions from Canada, Mexico, and outside North America on daily maximum 8-hour average ozone concentrations in US surface air. Simulations for summer 2001 indicate mean North American and US background concentrations of 26±8ppb and 30±8ppb, as obtained by eliminating anthropogenic emissions in North America vs. in the US only. The US background never exceeds 60ppb in the model. The Canadian and Mexican pollution enhancement averages 3±4ppb in the US in summer but can be occasionally much higher in downwind regions of the northeast and southwest, peaking at 33ppb in upstate New York (on a day with 75ppb total ozone) and 18ppb in southern California (on a day with 68ppb total ozone). The model is successful in reproducing the observed variability of ozone in these regions, including the occurrence and magnitude of high-ozone episodes influenced by transboundary pollution. We find that exceedances of the 75ppb US air quality standard in eastern Michigan, western New York, New Jersey, and southern California are often associated with Canadian and Mexican pollution enhancements in excess of 10ppb. Sensitivity simulations with 2020 emission projections suggest that Canadian pollution influence in the Northeast US will become comparable in magnitude to that from domestic power plants. This study quantifies the seasonality and geographic variability of global pollutant inflow to Asia. Asia is often looked to as a major source of intercontinental air pollution transport with rising emissions and efficient pollutant export processes. However, the degree to which foreign emissions have been imported to Asia has not been thoroughly examined. The Model Inter-Comparison Study for Asia (MICS-Asia) is an international collaboration to study air pollution transport and chemistry in Asia. Using the global atmospheric chemistry Model of Ozone and Related Tracers (MOZART v. 2.4), and comparing results with a suite of regional models participating in MICS-Asia, we find that imported O3 contributes significantly throughout Asia. The choice of upper boundary condition is found to be particularly important for O3, even for surface concentrations. Both North America and Europe contribute to ground-level O3 concentrations throughout the region, though the seasonality of these two sources varies. North American contributions peak at over 10% of monthly mean O3 during winter months in East Asia, compared to Europe''s spring- and autumn-maxima (5–8%). In comparison to observed data from the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET), MOZART concentrations for O3 generally fall within the range of the MICS models, but MOZART is unable to capture the fine spatial variability of shorter-lived species as well as the regional models.
