In the past, platinum–copper catalysts have proven to be highly active for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but transferring the high activities measured in thin-film rotating disk electrodes (TF-RDEs) to high-performing membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) has proven difficult due to stability issues during operation. High initial performance can be achieved. However, fast performance decay on a timescale of 24 h is induced by repeated voltage load steps with H2/air supplied. This performance decay is accelerated if high relative humidity (>60% RH) is set for a prolonged time and low voltages are applied during polarization. The reasons and possible solutions for this issue have been investigated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and distribution of relaxation time analysis (EIS–DRT). The affected electrochemical sub-processes have been identified by comparing the PtCu electrocatalyst with commercial Pt/C benchmark materials in homemade catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs). The proton transport resistance (Rpt) increased by a factor of ~2 compared to the benchmark materials. These results provide important insight into the challenges encountered with the de-alloyed PtCu/KB electrocatalyst during cell break-in and operation. Pt-based nanoparticles supported on high-surface-area carbon (HSAC) show very good properties as catalysts in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In many cases, however, the initial high activity of such catalysts rapidly drops as caused by various detrimental phenomena occurring in a typical electrochemical environment. In this work, a detailed study of a highly active system composed of PtCu3/HSAC nanoparticles with partially ordered structure and Pt skin with the addition of Au is performed. By using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, the effects of adding small amounts of gold compared to the nonmodified sample are followed through the different stages of an electrochemical cycling degradation protocol. Various morphological changes such as faceting, reshaping, and thickening of the Pt skin are investigated for both sets of samples on the atomic level. Interesting features such as well-defined shapes and surface defects are observed after degradation. However, the most important differences in terms of durability seem related to particle porosity. Finally, the experimental morphological observations are successfully reproduced by dealloying simulation with kinetic Monte Carlo modeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystalline Cu3Pt nanoparticles supported on graphitized carbon are synthesized by using a modified sol-gel method, and subsequent thermal annealing leads to alloying of Pt with Cu and formation of a partially ordered Pm ${\bar 3}$ m structure. Electrochemical dealloying under potentiodynamic conditions (potential cycling) induces not only changes from rather spherical high-index faceted to more cuboctahedral low-index faceted core-shell structures for particles in a size range of 10-20 nm but also percolation for some particles larger than 20 nm. In contrast, during dealloying under potentiostatic conditions (potential hold) the semispherical shape of small particles is completely retained and extensive porosity is formed on all particles larger than 20 nm. Other degradation processes are not observed on performing an additional accelerated aging test; hence, the high specific and mass activity of the catalyst decreases only slightly, mainly owing to continuing Cu leaching. The difference in dealloying protocols and their effect on the structure of the catalysts as well as their activities, considering the promising porosity formation, are discussed and indicate future directions for a rational design of active and stable oxygen reduction reaction catalysts. Abstract: Platinum copper alloy nanoparticle catalysts supported on graphitized carbon with and without partial crystal ordering were synthesized and tested for oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reaction for potential use in direct methanol fuel cells and proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The activity enhancement by at least a factor of 2 is possible when Pm-3m phase is present in the nanoparticle with respect to the pure Fm-3m phase. • Electrochemical stability of Rh/C was studied by accelerated degradation protocols. • IL-SEM and ex-situ TEM were used to study local nanoscale degradation mechanisms. • EFC-ICP-MS was used to track Rh dissolution during degradation tests. • Severe degradation of Rh/C occurs during cycling between 0.05 V RHE and 1.4 V RHE. • Degradation of Rh/C occurs via dissolution followed by re-deposition. Electrochemical stability of a commercial Rh/C catalyst has been studied in an acidic electrolyte by accelerated degradation protocols (ADP) which involved 5000 rapid voltammetric scans (1 V/s) in two potential regions: ADP1 was performed between 0.4 V RHE and 1.4 V RHE , while ADP2 was performed between 0.05 V RHE and 1.4 V RHE. Degradation of Rh/C was monitored by the changes in Rh electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen reduction (ORR). Rh/C catalyst was particularly stable during ADP1 showing only a minor loss of ECSA, while its electrocatalytic activity for HER and ORR was practically unaffected, which was further corroborated with identical location SEM (IL-SEM) imaging. In the case of ADP2, severe degradation of Rh/C occurred followed by substantial decay in its electrocatalytic activity. Coupling of the electrochemical flow cell (EFC) with ICP-MS revealed much higher Rh dissolution in ADP2 than in ADP1. IL-SEM in combination with ex-situ TEM imaging showed that degradation of the Rh/C sample is not homogeneous during ADP2, as dissolution prevails on certain locations, while dissolution followed by re-deposition occurs on others. According to the results obtained in this work, Rh/C catalysts are exceptionally sensitive to the sudden potential jumps between particularly low and high values. Atomically dispersed Fe–N–C catalysts are considered the most promising precious‐metal‐free alternative to state‐of‐the‐art Pt‐based oxygen reduction electrocatalysts for proton‐exchange membrane fuel cells. The exceptional progress in the field of research in the last ≈30 years is currently limited by the moderate active site density that can be obtained. Behind this stands the dilemma of metastability of the desired FeN4 sites at the high temperatures that are believed to be a requirement for their formation. It is herein shown that Zn2+ ions can be utilized in the novel concept of active‐site imprinting based on a pyrolytic template ion reaction throughout the formation of nitrogen‐doped carbons. As obtained atomically dispersed Zn–N–Cs comprising ZnN4 sites as well as metal‐free N4 sites can be utilized for the coordination of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions to form atomically dispersed Fe–N–C with Fe loadings as high as 3.12 wt%. The Fe–N–Cs are active electocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in acidic media with an onset potential of E0 = 0.85 V versus RHE in 0.1 m HClO4. Identical location atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, as well as in situ electrochemical flow cell coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements, is employed to directly prove the concept of the active‐site imprinting approach. Developing a Pt-based electrocatalytic material able to selectively catalyze hydrogen oxidation (HOR) while supressing oxygen reduction (ORR) is beneficial for durability of the fuel cells. Namely, degradation of carbon supported Pt particles is dramatically influenced by the unwanted ORR enrolling at the anode due to the air penetration during start-up/shut-down events. We present an organic matrix tris(aza)pentacene (TAP), which belongs to π-functional materials with ladder-like conjugated nitrogen-containing units, as the support for Pt to form a "smart" fuel cell anode able to selectively catalyze HOR and to suppress ORR. "Switching-on/off" of the composite material activity is provided by reversible reduction/oxidation of the TAP in the low potential region which provokes TAP - H x TAP transition. Conductivity of the reduced H x TAP enables supported Pt particles to effectively run HOR. In contrast, restricted conductivity of oxidized TAP analogue leads to the substantial drop in the ORR activity with respect to benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Pt/TAP composite is able to selectively catalyze HOR/HER and to suppress ORR via adjustment of the TAP conductivity. Such selective electrocatalysis is of great importance for durability of Pt-based fuel cells catalysts. In the future, low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), together with batteries, are expected to compete and eventually replace conventional combustion engines in the automotive industry. Currently, the most promising strategy towards cost-effective and highly-active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts seems to be alloying of Pt with less expensive and less noble 3d transition metals (Cu, Co and Ni, ...). A crucial issue to be resolved in the near future is, however, to bridge the gap between the remarkable activities measured on the laboratory scale with thin film rotating disk electrode (TF-RDE) and the industrial membrane electrode assembly (MEA). In the case of Pt-Cu alloy, one of the major reasons for this difficulty is inadequate removal of unstable Cu or in other words, improper 'activation'. Inadequately removed Cu can act as an impurity by poisoning the Pt surface via the well-known underpotential deposition (UPD) interaction, resulting in the inhibition of ORR performance. Due to highly favourable experimental conditions, in-situ electrochemical activation (in-situ EA) in TF-RDE setup masks many of the issues one experiences when trying to do the same ex-situ. Thus, matching the ORR performance obtained after in-situ EA with ex-situ CA in the case of Pt-Cu system has not been properly addressed so far. Based on a deeper understanding of in-situ EA of our in-house designed Pt-Cu/C electrocatalyst we here demonstrate development of carbon monoxide (CO) assisted ex-situ CA method. By using this gram scale ex-situ CA method, we for the first time show that a Pt-Cu system can achieve very high ORR performances in TF-RDE setup without any need for the use of in-situ EA.
